In July 2020, Morrison Rotarian Dr. Dick Vandermyde coordinated an online Zoom meeting with Christopher Stein, Chief of Heritage Areas and Large Landscape Initiatives, National Park Service for Interior Regions 3-5. Stein introduced the Bee and Butterfly Fund Seed legacy program to the Morrison Rotary Club.

During the meeting, he discussed our dependence on bees, butterflies and other insects to pollinate plants for foods we eat every day. Stein noted that “one out of every three bites of food you eat exists because of the efforts of pollinators, including many fruits, vegetables and seeds.

Plus, pollinators are not only necessary for our own food but support the food and habitat of animals.”

Stein also noted that “in the United States alone, pollination by honeybees contributed to over $19 billion of crop production in 2010, while pollination by other

In June 2020, the Rotary International Board of Directors and The Rotary Foundation trustees added “supporting the environment” as the seventh area of focus.

Board members established a collaborative effort known as Operation Pollination, which recognizes the importance of pollinator habitat, both restored and maintained on public and private lands.

Through collaboration and outreach, an interconnected mosaic of pollinator habitat – interspersed between public and private land – is being developed to stabilize and increase populations of pollinator species throughout each project area.

The Morrison Rotary Club agreed to join Operation Pollination as their 2021-22 project.

The club wrote a district matching grant to fund the project and voted to contribute $500 toward the project, which was double matched by the local District 6420. The Morrison City Council agreed to donate up

Next, a grant was written to the Bee and Butterfly Fund Seed, a Legacy program for seeds that are native to both bee and butterfly pollinators. Many thanks to Elsa Gallagher for providing 17 pounds of a variety of Clover, Lavender Hyssop, Lemon Mint, Coneflowers, Goldenrod and Blackeyed Susan seeds at no cost to Morrison Rotary.

The garden was planted in late April, along with a sign to commemorate the Morrison Rotary Club’s dedication to the preservation of pollinators in our area.

Many thanks to Christopher Stein, Elsa Gallagher of the BBHF, Dr. Vandermyde for his vision, plus Morrison Rotarians and Rotary District 6420 for providing funds to make this vision a reality!

Morrison Rotary installs new president A changing of the guard took place at Morrison Rotary Club on Wednesday, July 6.

Rotary President Carrie Melton handed the gavel, along with a president pin, to incoming president Scott Vandermyde.

Vandermyde also presented Melton with a plaque and a past-president pin.

The Morrison Rotary is thankful for the leadership that Melton provided. Under her watch, the club planted a Pollinator Plot on West Winfield Street, provided funding for a new pavilion for the Morrison Bark Park, and donated $5,500 in scholarships to Morrison High School students.

Melton also manages the Student of the Month program where Morrison Rotary recognizes two Morrison High School students each month who are selected by MHS staff.

Morrison Rotary is grateful for Melton’s leadership and looks forward to a promising year under Vandermyde leadership.

Vera L. Stutzke will celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends on Saturday, July 30th.

She is the daughter of Henry and Freda Mennenga and was married to Vera L. Stutzke Edwin “Bud” Stutzke (deceased, 1997) for 56 years.

Vera has two children, Cheryl Stutzke and Kurt (Elisa) Stutzke; two grandchildren, Jason Stutzke and Jennifer Stutzke (Jared Haenni); and three great-grandchildren, Jaren Duffield, Haele Young and Kobe Young. She also has three step-great-grandchildren, Aubri Menchaca, Brian Haenni, and Donny Haenni, as well as a niece, Gloria Swanson, and a nephew, Paul (Stacey) Swanson.

OBITUARIES JAMES J. FIELD

Born: February 3, 1921 in Fulton, IL Died: July 12, 2022 in Clinton, IA James Joseph Field James J. Field was born on February 3, 1921, in Fulton, Illinois.

A child of the depression, he embraced life as he grew older, but he never took anything for granted. He graduated at the top of his class from Fulton High School, Class of 1939. He applied and attended The University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI for two years until duty called with the attack on Pearl Harbor. Jim enlisted in the Navy as an officer while finishing his degree at Wisconsin. Upon graduation, he attended United States Naval Reserve Midshipmen’s School (V7) at the University of Notre Dame and graduated as a Lieutenant Junior Grade. He was posted to an ammunition depot in Massachusetts where he continued his education at Harvard Business School for three months. Jim served on the USS Satterlee (DD626) in both The European and Pacific Theaters of Operation.

Two highlights of Jim’s service were the Satterlee’s participation in the D-Day invasion and their role as the escort ship to President Roosevelt as he traveled to the Yalta conference. Jim talked about the influence the Navy had on him and the best part was the people he served with especially the Ship Captain. He also developed a love of travel and intrigue of the world around him.

After the war, Jim Field joined General Mills in Minneapolis, MN and then continued as the Office Manager for their Regional plant in Louisville KY. Soon, Jim was recruited by International Telephone and Telegraph to their New York office. At ITT, Jim developed a division that bought and sold companies internationally. His time at ITT included 20 years in Manhattan and 10 years based in Brussels, Belgium. His time in Europe was by

far the highlight of his professional career.

Upon his retirement from ITT in 1985, Jim traveled the world with his brother Bill Field.

Their trips included, China, Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Africa, Turkey, The Seychelle Islands and the Galapagos Islands. He didn’t have many places left to visit once they were finished with their trips.

After the intensity of New York City, Jim chose to move back to Fulton IL. and built a house in his childhood home. His weekly golf game lasted many years until there were no more partners left to play! His sharp mind was fortunately intact until his death and he remained ready and able to share many stories of his life.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Margaret Field, His brother William H. Field, and his sisters Helen R. (Eldon) Streff and Mary Field who died in infancy. He will be missed by his brother Eugene (Rebecca) Field and Uncle Jim will live on as the go to uncle for his many Nieces and Nephews, Mary (Al) Hullings, Susan Brewster, James (Lenore) Streff, Mike (Saundra) Field, Tom (Shelly) Field, Walter (Kim) Field, and Elizabeth (Eric) Toth.

The list of Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews grows yearly.

James Field’s family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Second Floor Nursing staff at Mercy Hospital in Clinton, The staff at Prairie Hills Assisted Living and the caregivers from Good Samaritan.

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, July 16 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Fulton from 10:00 am to 11:00 am followed by the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am with Reverend Matthew Camaioni officiating. Burial with military honors will be held at Calvary Hill Cemetery in Fulton.

REBECCA “BECKY” PAXTON Rebecca “Becky” F. Paxton, 75, of Erie, IL, died Thursday, July 14, 2022 at Genesis Medical Center, Illini – Silvis. Visitation will be from 2 – 4 pm on Sunday, July 17, 2022 at Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Erie.

Becky was born August 27, 1946 in Morrison, Illinois, the daughter of Blair and Alberta (Goodwin) Redell. She graduated from Erie High School. Becky worked for many years at General Electric in Morrison. After retiring from G.E. she went to Black Hawk College and received her AA degree in Computer

Science. She then worked for POST where she did drug testing at area nuclear plants.

Becky was an excellent cook and baker; her cakes were the best! She enjoyed music and had a gift for telling bad jokes and sharing useless knowledge. She had a great sense of humor. Becky’s faith in God and family always came first. She was a proud mother and grandmother and she loved spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her 3 children, Noel (Michelle) Paxton, Erie, Sarah Lucas, Lake in the Hills, IL, Megan (Shawn) Ryan, Erie; grandchildren, Michael (Brittney) Paxton, Zach Lucas, Kali (Jeremy) Ubersox, Andrew Paxton, Zoe Lucas, Bekah Ryan, Malachi Paxton, Zane Lucas, Molly Paxton, Dane Ryan, Reese Ryan; great grandson, Griffin Paxton; sister, Rita Reiley, Rock Island; brother, Allan (Karen) Redell, Pasco, WA; and sister-in-law, Elise Redell, Pagosa Springs, CO. 1962: Two Fulton girls vie for Whiteside County Fair Queen

July 18, 1962

Linda Norman and Nancy Nixon are the only Fulton girls competing for the title of Miss Whiteside County Fair Queen. There are 15 entrants in the contest that will take place Aug. 17.

The fair association will present a gift to each girl and the queen and her chaperone will receive an all-expense paid trip to Springfield to compete in the Miss Illinois County Fair Contest.

Last year the congregations of the Reformed and Christian Reformed Churches of Fulton approved support to a proposed combination nursing home and home for the aged in Fulton.

Since that time, the consistories of the churches have appointed a board of directors charged with the responsibility of planning the establishment and operation of the home. The directors have been granted a nonprofit corporation charter by the State of Illinois under the name of Harbor Crest Home.

50 Years

July 19, 1972

C. R. Leininger, superintendent of the River Bend Unit School District, has agreed with the Board of Education to accept a three-year contract. The contract specifies that he may terminate it at any time upon 60 days notice.

A salary of $21,900 for the first year is stipulated, with salary figures for later years to be negotiated on an annual basis. Leininger thus becomes the first superintendent of Fulton schools, so far as the Journal can determine, who

has been employed on more than a oneyear basis.

A contract for sewer system repairs estimated by engineers to cost $57,000 was awarded to Clinton Engineering Company. The contractors are expected to start work as soon as a final contract is approved by the city attorney and the city’s engineers. Some of the sewer lines to be repaired were installed about 1930 and have collapsed because of ordinary wear and tear.

Others were severely damaged by recurring floods of recent years.

40 Years

July 21, 1982

Tasty Mates is no more. The final humiliation came when someone broke into the place over the weekend and removed a variety of items. Harvey Wiebenga has operated the business since 1977 and said he closed the place and turned the property back to Don McBride, the owner, when McBride refused to patch a leak in the roof. The future is uncertain. In the beginning, the place was operated by Ray Rus as Dari-Delite. Other operators before Wiebenga were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Ritzema and Mrs. Jean Eizenga.

Fulton’s new superintendent of schools, Dr. Martin Kinert, was selected from 50 applicants for the position. Of the 50, eight were asked for extended interviews by the Board of Education. Kinert accepted an offer of the position at $36,000 a year. He was highly recommended by his present school board and associates.

Therapy involving eye movement discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.D. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy originally was developed to work with PTSD. This therapy focuses directly on the memory and seeks to change the way such memory is stored in the brain. The therapist will begin with taking a history and then preparing the client by assessing the target memory.

The therapist employs physiological techniques that identify feelings with the memory and reshapes them. The therapist directs lateral eye movements as the most common retraining technique.

Hand tapping and other auditory techniques can be employed. The goal is to learn a more adaptive process to the trauma. Sessions usually are 50 to 90 minutes. These sessions focus on the

past, present and future. In addition to identifying the vivid visual imagery with the original event, related emotions, body sensations and negative self beliefs are identified. Then a positive belief about self is introduced. This is where the eye movements, tapping or other bodily sensation is introduced in order to facilitate new responses in the brain.

Individuals with a single major traumatic experience may have substantial benefit after three to six sessions. Over time, closure happens. Ultimately the process seeks to help individuals identify in the present time related emotional pathways and response. There may be rehearsal for future events as well. People with multiple issues need more sessions. This process is gaining momentum because of the simplicity, independence from drugs and success.

Maintenance on the north bridge is the responsibility of the Iowa Department of Transportation while the south bridge is maintained by the Illinois Department of Transportation. A dispute between the two agencies on a Dubuque bridge may delay the closing of the Gateway bridge. The dispute exists between the two agencies over who is to pay for a multimillion dollar painting job on the Dubuque bridge. If Illinois must pay, there may not be enough funds to complete the Gateway project this year.

Because of the lack of new home sites in Fulton, the City Council authorized the formation of a new committee to study Fulton’s residential real estate development. The object of the commit-

tee will be to find new sites for residential homes because the land inside the city’s borders is at a premium. Mayor Howard Van Zuiden was named as the chairperson for the committee.

Members of the River Bend School Board adopted a new building use policy for all of the school buildings within the district. Under old policy, if a building was used for an approved athletic fundraiser, the group was not told what to do with money raised. Under new policy, the group now will be required to donate 80% of the fundraising profits from the event to the River Bend Athletic Boosters.

Jon and Vicki Lockhart went green with their demolition of the former Lockhart Insurance Building on Fifth Street. By tearing the building down by hand and relying on Kiwanis and Senior Center volunteers, the Lockhart’s were able to salvage $550 in metal with the proceeds donated to the Fulton Area Food Pantry and the River Bend Senior Center.

The 2012 Fulton Coaches Pitch AllStar team took first place in the River City Classic baseball tournament in Clinton, Iowa. Horse drawn buggy struck by car on Rt. 30 According to a news release from the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office, about 8:09 a.m. July 17, deputies responded to a crash at the intersection of U.S. Route 30 and Millard Road in rural Morrison. The crash was between an eastbound vehicle driven by Miranda M. Jenkins of Clinton, Iowa, and a southbound horse drawn buggy operated by Lewis E. Weaver, 74, and Mary W. Weaver, 65, of rural Fulton.

The Weavers were exiting the intersection while heading south on Millard Road when their buggy was struck by Jenkins’ vehicle. The Weavers were ejected from their buggy as a result of the crash and were transported from the scene by Morrison EMS to Mercy One Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa.

They were then flown to the University of Iowa Hospital for further treatment.

The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Fulton Police Department and Illinois State Police along with Morrison EMS and Morrison Fire Department.

Safety Renovations for Seniors’ Homes

Feeling safe and secure at home is a priority for any homeowner. But safety is of particular concern for aging men and women who are at greater risk of being involved in accidents at home than younger men and women.

Harvard Health Publishing says that accidents at home are among the leading causes of injury and death in the United States. The chances for fatalities increases as one ages, and by age 75 and older, men and women are almost four times as likely to die in a home accident as people a decade younger.

As people age, their balance, eyesight and general physical abilities can begin to diminish. Furthermore, a fall or incident that may only bruise a younger individual can cause more serious breaks or damage for seniors, resulting in potentially lengthy recovery times.

The Home Care Assistance organization says that one million elderly people are admitted to the emergency room for injuries every year. People concerned about the safety of their homes or the homes of their aging loved ones can retrofit such properties to make them safer.

Falls According to The Senior Social Club, which offers care and community services to seniors, falls are the most common accidents affecting seniors. One out of every three seniors aged 65 and older falls at least once a year.

In addition to working with doctors to improve mobility and modify medications that may cause unsteadiness, changes around the home can help. Grab bars placed in bathrooms and high-traffic areas can help seniors get stay more stable when changing from sitting to standing positions.

Potential tripping hazards should be assessed. Area rugs without nonskid backings, clutter on floors, extension cords that extend into walking areas, and uneven flooring pose tripping hazards. Anti-slip coatings can be added to floors to reduce the risk of tripping.

Poorly lit staircases and entryways also can contribute to falls. Consider the installation of motion-activated lighting so that dim areas can be automatically brightened when necessary.

A nightlight or LED lights placed near molding can help guide

seniors to the bathroom during midnight visits.

Physical Limitations Arthritis can impede seniors’ ability to turn on and off appliances, water faucets or handle certain kitchen tools.

Kitchen and bathroom modifications can include the installation of ergonomic and user-friendly handles and spigots.

Task lighting can make it easier to prepare meals, and appliances that automatically turn off after a certain period of time can be a safety feature for forgetful individuals.

Reorganize kitchen cabinets to make commonly used items as accessible as possible.

Smart Homes Friends or family members can have greater control over seniors’ homes by installing smart home systems. This way they can remotely adjust thermostats, control lights, view cameras, engage locks or alarm systems, and much more without having to be at the home. This can seniors allow seniors to maintain their independence while offering peace of mind to their loved ones. Certain home modifications can reduce seniors’ injury risk.

ERIE MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Ancestor Project As one of the final projects of the year, seventh graders at Erie Middle School were challenged to pick an ancestor, or someone they could research and learn more about, in order to write a story telling about their life. Students conducted interviews with family members and some were able to gather additional resources and pictures to help tell their story. While there were many great stories written, not all will be published.

This project was a collaborative effort between students in history classes with Mrs. Kruthoff and Mr. Armstrong, English class with Mrs. Wolf and their families.

Something unique about my great-grandfather is that he is one of the most active people I know for his age. Richard, otherwise known as Dick, is a man of God. He is also a family man and he was a farmer for his entire life. Richard is a remarkable man because his childhood had an influence on him, his adulthood shaped him and he’s having a great retirement.

My great-grandpa, Richard Wetzell, is a great man and his childhood influenced him a lot. His full name is Richard Garnet Wetzell, but he goes by Dick. Richard was born on Oct. 25, 1935, in a hospital in Sterling. Today, he is 87 years old. His parents are Paul and Monafae Wetzell of Tampico, who are no longer alive. He was the youngest of three, Art and John Wetzell being his older brothers. They have both now passed as well. He lived in a house in Tampico with his mother, father and brothers during his childhood. He recalls his mother saying that once Richard could walk, she could never keep him clean anymore. The house he grew up in is now owned and lived in by one of my relatives. He moved to a new house at 13 years old.

This house was about 9 or 9.5 miles from his other house.

Once he was old enough, he started school. Richard went to South Hume Elementary School, which no longer exists today. He did not play any sports in elementary school or middle school.

Some of the few vacations he took during childhood were to visit Yellowstone, the Smoky Mountains and other places. His father’s brother, who is his uncle, had some farmland there as well and they would go and help him on his farm. He also remembers his family

and another family going up to a place called “Devil’s Lake” where the water was always cold but they would still swim in it. His hobbies in his childhood were helping with chores and working on the family farm. He also enjoyed milking cows and helping raise their pigs and chickens. Richard remembers his father working with horses, but he was too young to ever help with them so he always worked with tractors.

The first car that he ever owned was a 1951 Chevy. In his teenage years, Richard attended Rock Falls High School.

He played football and was chosen as the class president. One struggle that he went through in his childhood was that his family did not have much money. A story he can remember of his brothers and him was that when he and John were still living in their parents’ house but Art was married, they had their last moment of really getting to be a child by having a water fight with the hose. Very clearly stated, Richard Wetzell’s childhood was very influential.

Richard’s adult life helped shape him into the great man he is today.

Richard met Lois Conklen in 1952 at a 4H meeting at age 13. They started dating at age 16 and Lois was about six to seven weeks younger than him. He got married to my great-grandma, Lois Conklen, at age 18. They got married in Iowa at the United Methodist Church of Maquoketa in 1953. They traveled a lot together. Some of the coolest places they went to were all the states in the United States of America, some of the provinces in Canada, and when they were in Texas, they walked together into Mexico. Richard has only been married once. Together, Richard and Lois had four children. This includes the oldest, Rodney Wetzell, who is my grandpa. He was born on Nov. 28, 1953.

The next child born was Katherine Wetzell, now Ganschow, who was born Nov. 6, 1954. Next was Stephen or Steve Wetzell and he was born Aug. 25, 1956.

Finally, the youngest is Thomas or Tom Wetzell and he was born on Christmas Day of 1962. They are all married with kids and a few grandkids now. The only job Richard ever had was farming. He was a farmer for all of his life. It started with chores for neighbors and once he got married to Lois he worked with her father before eventually working for himself. He also loved reading and he still does today. Richard’s adulthood really shaped him into who he is today.

Now Richard Garnet Wetzell is in his enjoyable retirement. He retired at age 65 in the year 2000 from his one and

only job … you guessed it, farming!!!

Unfortunately, my great-grandmother is not alive anymore and most of her farmland went to her kids. It is so amazing that Richard started off with 240 acres of land and now after all the land that was given to his kids, he still owns 300 acres of land. He doesn’t farm this land anymore, but he loves helping his kids on the farm. One example of this is that my grandpa and grandma went to Alaska last summer and my great-grandpa went over there and fed their cows, their cats and their dog.

Richard still loves reading to this day.

A memory I have is that almost every time I’ve gone to their house, I alway see Richard reading something whether it was a book or just a newspaper. After his retirement, he had someone build him a new house so my papa and grandma live in his old house today. So, Richard had and still has a good retirement.

This project helped me learn a lot about my great-grandpa, Richard. One big thing I learned is that Richard was a great man. He did so many good things in his life. They may not have

been super big in our world but in my world they were big. I see the things we have in a different light. I see all the things that we have now that he never got the chance to have as a young child.

I feel as though I got closer to him through this project because I got to learn things I never knew about him. A life lesson I got from this project is that when you learn more about someone you love, you get closer to them. I feel that I did well in this project.

As you can see, Richard Wetzell is a remarkable man because he had a very influential childhood, he had a nicely shaped adulthood, and he has a good retirement. He had an influential childhood because he learned all he knew about farming from his father.

He had a nicely shaped adulthood because he had a good marriage and healthy children. He has a good retirement because he can still farm on his farmland today. I got to learn a lot about him and got closer to him. Richard Wetzell is a good father, a great farmer and a great-grandfather. I love him so much and I hope you learned plenty about him.

dwussow@shawmedia.com PROPHETSTOWN – The Erie-Prophetstown Panthers surprised many onlookers when they went 8-3 and advanced to the second round of the IHSA Class 2A playoffs in 2021.

With a combined record of 6-30 from 2016 to 2019, the Panthers had sunk into the depths of the Three Rivers Rock after four straight competitive seasons.

In 2021, however, they righted the ship after an 0-2 start, winning eight in a row and claiming the division title before falling in the second round of the playoffs. It was their first winning season since a 5-4 campaign in 2014.

Now, Erie-Prophetstown hopes to build on last season’s success with almost entirely new lineups on both sides of the ball.

Senior running back/safety Jase Grunder and senior guard/defensive tackle Clay Hockaday know expectations are going to be a lot higher this season – and they’re excited to see how their team stacks up.

“Expectations are definitely higher after last season, after a good season,” Grunder said. “I expect us to keep it going and keep high expectations for the next, future seasons.”

“I don’t really know what to expect,” Hockaday said. “Last year, everybody kind of expected us to be bad, because normally, we were the worst team in the conference, but I’m expecting a good season.”

Replacing the production of Kolby Franks, a Class 2A All-State selection and 2021 Sauk Valley Media Football Player of the Year, will be one of the Panthers’ biggest challenges this season. The senior dual-threat quarterback accounted for more than 2,500 combined passing and rushing yards last season, and was a big reason for E-P’s resurgent season.

Panthers coach Jesse Abbott thinks it will take multiple players to truly fill the void left by Franks, but he also believes there’s some good leftover talent and incoming talent to help with that.

“Kolby’s one of those guys that unless you’re really blessed, you’re just never going to replace him the following year.

As far as Kolby goes, we’re going to have to do – not quarterback by committee – but find those yards by committee,” Abbott said.

“Connor Sibley was pretty close to rushing for 1,000 yards, too. I do think one of the things we could potentially be is faster in the backfield. We might not be as big, but our guys that are in there are all track sprinters, so that could be to our advantage. I think our receivers are going to be pretty good. And really,

You’re just not going to replace everybody, but you’re going to try to find ways to plug them in and just keep that momentum moving.”

Hockaday and Grunder agree that they probably won’t be able to replace Franks, but they feel good about last year’s backups stepping up.

“You can’t replace somebody like Kolby Franks, but there are a lot of underclassmen we have that did contribute last year, so we’re looking forward to having all of those guys back,” Hockaday said. “Even though we did graduate a lot of guys, there’s still a lot of connection there between some of the underclassmen because we did play a lot of those guys last year, too.”

“I don’t think you can really replace someone like Kolby, incredible athlete,” Grunder said. “But I do think we have a pretty good class upcoming, a good junior class incoming, so I think we can rebuild and do good this year.”

Erie-Prophetstown also will need to reload in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Hockaday returns as a proven two-way player, but many of his counterparts on the offensive and defensive lines are still untested.

Abbott will learn much more about his new-look team in the coming months, but for now, he’s eager to see who will step up in the vacated roles from last year.

In terms of returning starters, he sees two main standouts. Abbott also expects bigger and better things from a

few of last year’s backups.

“We have two seniors that were twoway starters last year. Jase Grunder, this will actually be his third year on varsity on defense, and Clay Hockaday was a two-way starter for us last year on offensive and defense line. I think we start there and our success is going to be with those two guys because they were on the field almost every play last year, and so they have that experience,” Abbott said.

“I think one that is really going to need to take a leadership spot is Jack Minssen. He’ll probably end up being our quarterback. He did start on defense last year, so there is some expectation with him as well. And then I think as you start looking around, names you probably haven’t said a lot – Franky Bushaw is going to be a junior, he really spent time in the weight room to put himself in position to be on the field.

Hunter Bruketta is a really good-looking wide receiver/linebacker-type kid, just had to wait his turn last year and did so again in the weight room. Tyler Ballard is another one, he actually ended up starting for us in our playoff game on defense and did really well. It was the only game he ever started and really the only game he ever played defense. He’ll be in the backfield, too.

There’s definitely some senior kids that could be very, very successful and put us in position, but they really are a little untested right now.”

Offensively, the Panthers will mix up formations and incorporate pre-snap motions to keep defenses off-balance and create advantages for their playmakers. Defensively, they want to be

aggressive, with an added emphasis on countering the spread this season.

“I think we start with some of the things we were successful with last year, finding those things that worked for us. ... I think one of things that we will always try to do is use formations and motions to our advantage to try to put our kids in the best spot,” Abbott said. “We’re not going to line up in the same formation the same time every play. We just aren’t built for that kind of football offensively, but when we can incorporate multiple formations and different guys touching the ball, that’s when we can be successful offensively.

“I think, defensively, it’s still going to be aggressive. There will be some changes a little bit just because of the opponents that we play. Our side of the conference is tending to be more of a spread type of conference. Even our crossovers, we were talking, Mendota’s going to be spread and St. Bede could be, and Sherrard was, and Rockridge can be and Orion can be, so we have to be prepared for that a little bit more than we were last year. Last year, we got away with being just kind of as athletic as everyone else. This year, we really gotta scheme to prepare for some of those spread offenses.”

In terms of schedule, things will look largely the same in the Three Rivers Rock as they did last year. Sherrard has a new head coach, and some of the teams may be switching to a spread offense, but no team appears to be head and shoulders above the rest.

“The same schedule as last year, so I feel pretty good about it,” Grunder said.

“We did really well against everyone, so I expect to do about the same.”

Erie-Prophetstown will host Mendota at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 in its season opener.

“The schedule, we keep some of the longer drives to us, I think, which is nice. I think having some film on Mendota Week 1 that we didn’t have last year will be very helpful,” Abbott said.

“I think Rockridge is going to bounce back, if I had to pick a team. I think they had a really good younger class. They lost some tight ones last year. I think Monmouth-Roseville will be good. I think Orion has a chance to really bounce back. And then I think for some of the other teams, it’s going to depend on the numbers game. I think Sherrard’s in a position with their new coach to really build something, but I do think it’s open. I think we can line up and we can compete every Friday night. We’re not staring down a team that we just know right now we’re not going to be able to compete with. So I think that’s always to your benefit. The kids believe that every Friday night we can compete.”

Hundreds hit the links to golf for heroes at Byron Hills

Hundreds of golfers hit the links at Byron Hills Golf Course in Port Byron on Saturday, July 9, for the third annual Byron Hills Fore Heroes outing, with firetrucks, flags and military banners welcoming them to the course.

It was the third year that course owners Mike and Holly Sutton and Jim and Jackie Groves partnered with Jason Sullivan and Remember the Fallen (RTF), a Texas-based organization that gives back to veterans and first responders nationwide. The outing raised $40,000 this year thanks to registration fees, raffles and donations. Last year’s event netted $30,000 and $17,000 was netted the year before.

With morning and afternoon flights, the event brought in teams of golfers who played the 18-hole course before enjoying a meal, drinks and raffle prizes.

Military Mamas Operation

Hometown Hero banners were set up at the club entrance, and a Kids for Vets lemonade stand was open on the course. Organizers were grateful for all the support from sponsors, golfers and volunteers.

“Service members and first responders know and understand that a team is crucial to any mission. The community comes together as a team in a big way for this outing. A simple conversation three years ago has turned into this community’s biggest ‘thank you,’” Lead Coordinator Shane Kern said.

RTF dedicates itself to those who have paid the ultimate price while safeguarding the American way of life and supports first responders who have had a life-changing event that impacts their ability to serve.

This year, a portion of the proceeds were donated to the family of Captain Garrett Ramos, a Rock Falls firefighter who died on Dec. 4, 2021, while fighting a fire, leaving behind a wife and two children.
