Odell Public Library’s Tale Trail is back at Kelly Park on East High Street. Gather the family and take a stroll along the walking path and enjoy a hilarious underwater tale as you go. This year’s story is “Just Be Jelly” by Maddie Frost. Odell thanks the city of Morrison for use of the beautiful park and Morrison Community Unit School District 6 for assisting with lamination. The Tale Trail will be up all month, except when the city needs to mow. Please note there is construction at the main entrance, with two other entrances open to the north and east.

2002: Fulton receives Governor’s Hometown Award for second time 60 Years

Preliminary plans for a new St. Joseph Mercy Hospital have been completed and are being studied by hospital officials. The first sketches are tentative, but they present the sort of modern hospital they are hoping to create for the people of Clinton, Iowa.

40 Years

July 14, 1982

A jury in the Circuit Court at Morrison decided that Quality Ready Mix Co., an Iowa corporation owned by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Holesinger of Fulton, should have $78,000 for 6.7429 acres of land near the river and damage to adjacent land resulting from construction of the flood control system.

Further delays in the “freeing” of two local toll bridges are indicated from the Iowa Highway Department.

The likely date was July 1. The latest prediction is for “early winter.” The IHD has set Sept. 23 as the date for opening bids for removing tolls booths and making other repairs to the bridges.

30 Years

July 8, 1992

Alan Koenes, an employee at Agrico Chemical Co., escaped with bruises and an injured arm when he fell between two barges while helping to move lids after his crew had finished unloading fertilizer. Plant operator William Schaver said it took about 15 minutes to rescue Koenes after he had fallen in 20 feet of water between the two barges.

A severe storm with 60 mph winds, large hail and heavy rains hit Fulton and surrounding areas last week causing downed trees and power outages.

The DeWeerdt home at 1111 14th St. suffered considerable damage when a tree uprooted and landed on top of the house.

20 Years July 10, 2002

Several Fulton people motored to Springfield to receive Fulton’s second Governor’s Hometown Award. This year’s award was given for the continued volunteerism required to install and operate the new grinding stones in the de Immigrant Windmill.

Clinton Imaging Services. Hall is being assisted by Dr. Jeffrey Hallman, who is a radiologist and medical director of Clinton Imaging. Clinton Imaging, a brand-new MRI facility located within Mercy Medical Center, has completed installation of a state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging system.

The baseball league tournament for 10 to 12 year olds took place in Fulton with 11 teams competing. Three of the top four teams were from the River Bend School District. Fulton 2 took first place, Albany placed second, Erie took third and Fulton 1 finished fourth.

The importance of vitamin D, vitamin K2 and boron are discussed

known as vitamin D. Bowles cites evidence that at times when our country supplemented with more vitamin D, we had far less of the above conditions. He notes if we return to this supplementation, we will regain much of that health.

Bowles points out that when vitamin D is taken with the proper minerals there is no true overdose. What happens when the proper ingredients are not present is that excess calcium enters into our systems and causes problems.

This imbalance is driven by factors such as not having adequate magnesium.

Bowles points out there are two more

supplements to keep in mind to provide the proper balance. These are vitamin K2 and boron. Many providers know about vitamin K and the impact on warfarin or Coumadin, which are blood thinners. Vitamin K2 is a distinct molecule with different properties of substantial significance.

Vitamin K1, which helps with clotting, is found in plants. Vitamin K2 is found in animals and fermented foods and helps to deposit excess calcium in the proper places. Some feel these two vitamins are distinctly different and should be reclassified. K2 is further

classified into the more natural MK4 and the synthetic MK7. Studies show vitamin K2 improves heart health and longevity.

The importance of vitamin K2 with vitamin D and magnesium is to be emphasized. In the mix of importance for bone health and soft tissues is boron.

Some supplements have this included.

Individuals may need from 3 to 10 milligrams. Others may need more.

Finally, one must be precautionary of the retinol form of excess vitamin A, which can offset the benefits of high dose vitamin D.

The River Cities Quilters Guild will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, at Fulton Presbyterian Church, 311 Ninth St. Nancy Hook will be speaking on preparing your quilt for a long arm quilter. Hook has had a long arm machine since 2010 and started this skill when she was working full time. She has been retired for three years and is able to devote more time to her craft.

River Cities Quilters Guild has been in existence for 35 years doing community service sewing by making quilts for fundraisers, passing quilts to nursing homes and making quilts for My Gear for children entering the foster care system. Members of the River Cities Rotary club reflected on the past year’s accomplishments and presented their annual awards at a June 28 meeting at the Riverdale High School library.

Toni Lucas of Albany was named River Cities Rotary Rotarian of the Year. Known as “Ms. Rotary,” she motivated the club to be regular contributors to The Rotary Foundation, which helped them win the Louisville Slugger baseball bat for District 6420. She also is very passionate about educating people about the reality of human trafficking and how communities can help stop it.

Lucas was able to bring Wreaths Across America to Port Byron in December and has been coordinating the project in Albany for the past few years. River Cities Rotary will officially be sponsoring its first cemetery for Wreaths Across America this year.

On July 1, Lucas took the helm as club president, following the term of Julie Perkins.

Deputy Jim Miller of Rapids City was presented with the River Cities Rotary Citizen of the Year award for 2021-22. “Dep” has been the school resource officer at Riverdale schools for the past 11 years through the Rock Island County Sheriff’s Office. He made his mark on the school district and on the students by starting the Crime Stoppers Club, the DARE program with the fifth graders, coordinating Cops and Kids at Christmas and giving presentations on internet safety. Miller visited the River Cities Rotary club on multiple occasions

Ted Doty of Port Byron was given an honorary membership, the first for the club. Ted’s wife, Kelley, joined Rotary in 2004 and Ted has been involved with the club as a volunteer ever since. Ted has been the muscle behind the Pepsi wagon and ice portion of the Tug Fest fundraiser since 2005, traveled to Ak Tenamit in Guatemala twice with Rotary District 6440 to help build bungalows and a trades classroom and printed thousands of flyers and marketing material through the years.

The new Rotary year began July 1 and the international theme for the year is “Imagine Rotary.” River Cities Rotary meets every Tuesday at 7:15 a.m. at the River Valley District Library, 214 S. Main St. in Port Byron.

Trap shooting gaining popularity in Sauk Valley area

One of the fastest-growing sports in the Sauk Valley area – and in the nation – is high school trap shooting.

In the Sauk Valley area, several teams have sprung up in the past few years. Included in those local schools are Milledgeville, Polo, Eastland, Morrison, Prophetstown, Forreston and Faith Christian School.

Prophetstown is one of the bigger teams in the area with about 38 competitors. After seven competition weeks this year, it made a June 4 trip to Bunker Hill for the state championship, finishing eighth out of 47 teams.

At state, the competitions are broken down into three categories: novice, JV and varsity.

Prophetstown coach Gabe Olinger was pleased with how his team performed overall, and he was especially impressed with the novice group this year.

“At the state tournament, our novice team actually got second in the whole state,” Olinger said. “One boy from the team, Bryce Folsom, he just started shooting this year and his average was low enough during the league that he was still a novice. Well, in the last couple of weeks before state, he really improved and he ended up getting first in the novice division.”

At state, the scoring system is designed in a way that allows smaller teams to compete with bigger ones.

With the amount of variance there is from team to team, this system allows a team such as Morrison to contend with a team such as Prophetstown.

“For state, they take the five best scores from the team from the varsity

to get your team score. It kind of really levels the playing field since we have a real big team of around 38 kids,” Olinger said. “There’s some schools like Morrison, I think they only have like 12 kids on the team. If they have five kids that shoot really well, they can compete with the bigger teams.”

Morrison, which is coached by Andy Riggen and Mary Schaefer, is one of the startup teams, having begun just two years ago.

With only eight competitors on the roster – seven boys and one girl – the Mustangs are one of the smallest teams in the area.

Morrison also made the trip to Bunker Hill this season after battling through some challenging weather early on.

“We started with a lot of bad weather – rain, wind, etc. So the better weather made the shooting more fun,” Riggen said. “We had six school competitions and we went to Bunker Hill for state.

Most of the kids have only shot at one gun club because the scores are on the internet and we don’t know who we’re shooting against. Being at state for the kids was a real eye-opener. They did very good that day.”

When Olinger started six years ago, there were about 80 students competing at state. This year, there were 800.

“The sport has grown almost double every year since we started,” Olinger said. “It is actually the fastest-growing sport in the nation right now.”

Olinger and Riggen expect that trend of growth to continue for the foreseeable future.

“Trap shooting is a safe, growing sport and just getting a good start in Illinois,” Riggen said. “Trapshooting is known for having the nicest, friendliest people. We really enjoy it.”

“From what I’ve seen the last six years, the sport is growing exponentially every year,” Olinger said.

On July 6-10, Prophetstown competed at nationals at MTA Homegrounds in Mason, Michigan, in a field of more than 3,000 youth shooters.

Port Byron’s Murray takes second place in Reagan Run 5K in Dixon

DIXON – Back at its usual location through the streets of Dixon – stretching from Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home on Hennepin Avenue, across the Rock River and through the woods in Page Park and then back across the river to Haymarket Square on Highland Avenue – the 22nd annual Reagan Run 5K took place Saturday morning, July 2.

A field of 774 participants, ranging in age from 7 to 84, ran or walked this year’s race as onlookers gathered on either side of the course, dotting the landscape over its 3.1-mile route.

Sterling’s Jacob Gebhardt, 22, was first to cross the finish line, recording a personal-record time of 15:24.25 – nearly 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher and almost 40 seconds faster than his previous best at the annual race.

Port Byron’s Tommy Murray was the second-place finisher, running a personal-record time of 15:53.80. Like Gebhardt, Murray is a veteran of the Reagan Run, having competed three or

ships in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races, Murray, a 17-year-old Riverdale High School runner, was itching to get back into competition and run in a familiar

area again.

“It felt really good. It’s my first road race, 5K this summer,” Murray said.

“I’m super happy with it, good time.

My grandparents live here and my mom grew up here, so I like to come to this race whenever they have it.

“It’s a fun course. It’s a little bit tricky because there’s some steep hills back in the woods over there, but I thought it was a super fun course just to come out here and run a nice 5K.” Dixon’s Brock Drengenberg, 19, came in third with a time of 16:05.03.

Drengenberg was a state champion for the Dukes in the 800 meters in the Class 2A state finals in 2021.

Sterling junior Dale Johnson, 16, finished fourth, completing his run in 16:08.27. Johnson was a Class 2A state track medalist in May, nabbing ninth place in the 1,600 and fifth in the 4x800 meters with teammates John Cid, Thomas Holcomb and Jordan Britt.

Dixon’s Cadyn Grafton, 19, rounded out the top five with a time of 17:23.81.
