The first Morrison Community American Red Cross Blood Drive of 2024 was held on Thursday, Jan. 11, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Morrison. Thank you to the church for allowing the ARC to host blood drives in the church hall.

Knights of Columbus member Terry Hoehn faithfully cleared the hall the evening before and returned at the end of the drive to put everything back. It was much appreciated.

Thank you to the Ebenezer Church Women and Ebenezer Ladies Aid, who have sponsored the canteen for the last two January blood drives. The wonderful ladies who purchased, prepared and bagged up all the sandwiches and cookies for the donors and staff were Deb Adolph, Karen Landheer, Joyce Ottens, Darlene Hook, Mary Vos, Jane Haan and Barb Domdey.

Thanks to the valuable ARC Certified volunteers who help at the registration desk, Pat Pendgraft and Irma Russell.

Appreciation to volunteers Rick Barr and another, who wishes to remain anonymous, who helped post-escort the donors to the canteen area chairs for water and goodies. This mystery volunteer also donates blood.

There were 60 incredible people who came through the doors to help save up to three lives each!

The eight outstanding double red cell/ Power Red donors were Craig Brady, Duane Imel, Jack Jones, Harvey Tegeler, Chad Abell, Joe Screnock, Dale Belt and another who wishes to remain unnamed.

We are thankful that John C. “Jack” Fritz came in for the first time to join the donor ranks.

Donors reaching pin milestones were Jenna Landheer earning a one-gallon pin, Philip Olt IV and Valerie Pell earning two-gallon pins, Chad Abell receiving a six-gallon pin, and Dave Temple receiving a nine-gallon pin. These five donors alone have helped 240 patients in need of blood products.

Sixty potential donors and only six deferrals is not bad for a winter blood drive. Our January drives rarely reach goals with so many “snowbirds” on my eligible donor list who are away or the cold, dreary, gloomy weather depletes their vitamin D and hemoglobin levels.

What really impacts a drive’s success is the cancellations and “no shows” who were scheduled.

There were five cancellations (which I totally get because things come up or you get ill), and 10 that did not show. Fifteen donors that did not come in results in us being down 25% of the drive’s potential total. I have a few donors who I text message a reminder to so they don’t forget to come in. I’d be happy to message anyone with a reminder. Several of those who did not make it contacted me and rescheduled for the next drive.

One thing that I noticed while preparing this report is we have a lot of couples that donate together. Make it a “day date” and give blood together!

Our next drive will be from noon to 5:45 p.m. Thursday, March 21, the first day of spring.

The sponsor will be Bethesda Lutheran Church Women.

Early Childhood Resource Fair at Odell library Feb. 10

with the Regional Office of Education 47 and Birth to Five Illinois, is offering Morrison’s first-ever Early Childhood Resource Fair from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 10.

Join us for a morning of kid-friendly activities and the opportunity to learn about local programs and resources.

This is a free, drop-in event at the library.

LOCAL BRIEFS Morrison FFA alumni to host breakfast fundraiser

The Morrison FFA Alumni will be hosting a breakfast fundraiser at the Family Chef, 701 W. Lincolnway in Morrison, from 8 to 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 5.

The menu will include pancakes, sausage patties, eggs, orange juice, chocolate milk and coffee.

This will be donation only, with proceeds allotted toward the Morrison High School greenhouse.

ROCK FALLS

ROCK FALLS – A longtime Rock Falls business was destroyed by a fire that broke out early Tuesday morning, Jan. 16.

Firefighters from throughout the Sauk Valley fought the blaze at Moore Tires’ shop, 2411 E. Rock Falls Road/ U.S. Route 30. Rock Falls firefighters were called about 4:25 a.m. to the 70,000-square-foot facility.

When firefighters arrived, heavy smoke was coming from the shop area and fire quickly spread throughout the building, leading to the partial collapse of the south and west walls. As dawn broke, clouds of thick black smoke could be seen roiling above the building.

About 6:30 a.m., the department called for an excavator to help put out the flames, which got trapped under falling sheet metal from the walls and roof and became difficult to put out unless exposed, Rock Falls Fire Capt.

Matt Kobbeman said.

No one was injured. About 20 agencies responded at some point, many bringing tenders, Kobbeman said.

About 7 a.m., Moore Tires posted on its Facebook page: “There’s been a devastating fire at our Rock Falls location early this morning. We are so thankful all employees are safe. While we figure out next steps for our business, please know our Dixon location is fully operational. ... Please keep our incredible first responders in your thoughts and prayers this morning.”

Fire crews were still on scene Tuesday afternoon hitting any hot spots. In a news release about 2:15 p.m., Rock Falls Acting Fire Chief Ken Wolf said it appears the fire began in the first-floor shop area. Its cause is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Sterling and Rock Falls fire departments and the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office.

About 90% of the building was affected, the release said.

Wolf called in the Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the EPA and representatives arrived to monitor the chemicals in the water runoff and in the air and they came away with “no major concerns,” Wolf said.

According to Whiteside County property tax records, the building was worth $409,000. That’s not including the equipment and trucks that were inside at the time.

Fire departments from all over the Sauk Valley area responded Tuesday, Jan. 16, to help douse the flames at Moore Tires in Rock Falls.

Rock Falls Road, immediately offered the bar as a place for firefighters to rest and warm up.

They needed it. At 4:30 a.m., the temperature was 4 below with a windchill factor of -20 to -25 and it didn’t improve. In fact, the weather was even colder by 9 a.m. with a temp of minus 8 and a windchill of 30 below, according to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, which gets its info from the Whiteside County Airport in Rock Falls.

It never got warmer than about 1 degree all day with a windchill of minus 25.

This is the biggest fire Rock Falls has seen in years. On Dec. 28, 2006, the abandoned Reliant Fastener company downtown, which had been closed since 2002, burned to the ground in a fire that started about 5 p.m. Fourteen fire departments responded.

Moore’s Rock Falls location was the company’s original site, opened in 1991 by owner Jeff Moore and his wife, Angie.

The first shop had only two bays and the Moores lived in an apartment above the garage, according to the Moore website.

Firefighters worked in frigid temperatures during the early morning fire at Moore Tires in Rock Falls on Tuesday, Jan. 16.

They have since expanded the building to nine bays and the Moores no longer live on-site.

In addition to tire sales, Moore does oil changes and brake and suspension work.

Its newest location, which is in the former Plaza Cinemas, 1315 N. Galena Ave. in Dixon, opened Feb. 28, 2022.

The family-owned business also has locations in Mendota, Kewanee, Monmouth and Macomb.

Ten memorable years followed until Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, called. Doug and family accepted the challenge and moved in the summer of 1982.

In both universities Doug directed groups that toured in 36 states and on several international trips. Both universities’ choral groups received major awards and honors.

Doug retired from Ball State University in 2004 as Professor Emeritus of Music and Director Emeritus of Choral Activities, but he remained active in local musical organizations. His greatest professional joy was observing the successes of literally hundreds of former students as public-school teachers, college and university choral conductors, and directors of community choruses and church choirs.

But, of course, there is also the family that he dearly loved. It would take reams of paper to sum him up as a husband and father and grandfather. Everywhere he went, he would proudly tell of his 61-year-old marriage, his six children, and eighteen grandchildren.

MYRTLE CHARLOTTE SCHROEDER-WILLIS

The eighteen grandchildren – 11 girls and 7 boys – live in Muncie, New Castle, Ft. Wayne, and Indianapolis, IN; in Bolingbrook, IL; Fort Mitchell, KY; and Madison, Wisconsin.

Also surviving are Doug’s sister Rebecca Amman Schaver (Allen), his brother Paul (Sue) Amman, and many nieces and nephews.

Doug was preceded in death by infant son Bret Jason Amman as well as his father and mother.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at Community of Hope United Methodist Church, 1968 W. Main Street, Muncie, IN. Interment will follow services at Jones Cemetery.

Visitation will be held at Community of Hope United Methodist Church, 1968 W Main Street, Muncie, IN on Friday, February 2, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and also on Saturday, February 3, from 9:00 a.m. until time of service at 11:00 a.m.

OBITUARIES RICHARD DALE BOELKINS Born: July 10, 1952 in Morrison, IL Died: January 13, 2024 in Morrison, IL RICHARD DALE BOELKINS, 71, of Morrison, IL, died Saturday, January 13, 2024, at home.

There will be a graveside service at a later date. Cremation rites have been accorded. The Morrison Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be held at Grove Hill Cemetery in Morrison. A memorial has been established to Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison.

Richard was born July 10, 1952, in Morrison, IL to Robert A. and Grace (Van Zuiden) Boelkins. He was educated in the Coleta Grade Schools and was a 1970 graduate of Sterling High School. Rick married Diane

K. Peugh on August 3, 1973, in Sterling, IL. He dedicated many years to 3M in Cordova, retiring in 2012. He was a member of Ebenezer Reformed Church. Rick was an avid outdoorsman, with a particular love for deer and turkey hunting. He was a skilled craftsman, delighting in working with his hands.

He generously lent his expertise to numerous family and friends, contributing to various construction projects and home renovations.

Survivors include his wife, Diane; one daughter, Jessica (Jim) White of Morrison, IL; one son, Nathan (Julie) Boelkins of Solon, IA; four grandchildren, Carson and Kinley White and Jaxon and Anabelle Boelkins; one sister, Judy (Doug) Leech of Morrison, IL; two sisters-in-law, Linda Boelkins of Arizona and Linda Webb of Sterling, IL; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Randall Boelkins.

Whiteside Forum to feature meteorologist Andrew Stutzke The Whiteside Forum will host guest speaker Andrew Stutzke, a Sterling native and the morning meteorologist for WQAD TV8, on Sunday, Jan. 28, at the Odell Public Library in Morrison.

Stutzke’s topic will be “Meteorology, Storm Chasing, Storm Preparedness, Weather Patterns, Models and

Climate.” Stutzke also will answer questions about the weather, his life, training and work.

The free presentation begins at 2 p.m. and is open Andrew Stutzke

to everyone. The Odell Public Library is located at 307 S. Madison St. in Morrison.

Stutzke is a graduate of Sterling High School and Sauk Valley Community College and completed his bachelor’s degree in meteorology at Northern Illinois University in 2016. He has worked at WQAD since 2018, earned

his American Meteorological Society Certified Broadcast Meteorologist designation in 2021 and is a certified drone pilot.

Dr. Wolf Koch talks pizza at next WWW@WCC program Wild Winter Wednesdays at the Windmill Cultural Center in Fulton invites the public to its next program Jan. 31. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. with coffee, tea and mill treats, followed by the program beginning about 9:20.

Dr. Wolf Koch will review early flame bread development, the evolution of early pizza making and the main differences in pizza baking. Koch also will touch on some specialty variations of pizza.

Jan. 22, 1964

The State Department of Public Health has given final approval of the Harbor Crest Home site, according to a letter received from the regional health officer. All state requirements with respect to highways, water and sewer services and zoning had been met.

A factual analysis of the financial situation of the Fulton junior high and grade school district was presented at the Fulton Kiwanis Club meeting by Superintendent Virgil Staples. He explained why the board has decided to submit to the voters a proposal for increasing the legal tax rate limit from 75 to 96 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. An increase in the assessed valuation of the district will not mean a substantial increase in total revenue.

50 Years

Jan. 23, 1974

The stockholders of the First Trust & Savings Bank of Albany reelected the board of directors as follows: E. Don Hanson Sr., Roy VenHuizen, Irene Hanson, Wesley Pessman and E. Don Hanson Jr. The board elected E. Don Hanson Jr. as president and reelected D.V. Potter as vice president

and cashier and Theo Sikkema as assistant cashier. Other employees are Evelyn Medema, Ida Balk, Duane Temple, Carolyn Buis and Penny Price.

Piccadilly Circus, the Fulton youth center, closed its doors after three years and eight months. The center’s originators, Mr. and Mrs. Steven Stuart, said it was because of a lack of finances and lack of student and adult interest. The center was self-supporting in the winter, but during the summer months it had little participation.

40 Years

Jan. 25, 1984

Delbert Nelson, a Fulton city employee for more than 14 years, was honored at a party for city employees on the occasion of his retirement. He received a watch from City Administrator Tom Kamm. Nelson has worked in several city departments.

The Jack and Jill grocery store, operated in recent years by Tom Kelley, will continue, according to statements made by both Kelley and Mrs. Chesley Sikkema, who operated the store for many years with her late husband, Robert. Kelley said no definite date has been set for transferring ownership and management to someone

else and said he will operate the business until that happens.

30 Years

Jan. 19, 1994

Fulton firemen battled a blaze in bitter cold temperatures that left extensive damage to a woodworking and jewelry shop in Fulton. The shop, owned by Jimmy Carroll, is located at Fourth Street and 24th Avenue. The fire was reported at 7 p.m. and firemen remained on scene till after 10 p.m.

The Morrison Fire Department, Illinois State Police and the Fulton Police department assisted.

Fulton, along with much of the Midwest, has been in a deep freeze for the past several days, but weathermen promise warmer weather later in the week. Weathermen were predicting lows could reach 30 degrees below zero.

20 Years

Jan. 21, 2004

Fulton wrestlers participated in the Polo Invite and four brought home medals from the 13-team tourney.

Medals awarded to Steamers were two gold and two bronze. Ben Kuebel was the first to claim gold. The other gold medalist was senior Matt Tyler, who is ranked No. 2 in the state. The two

wrestlers who claimed bronze medals were Eric Clarkson and Eric Meinsma.

The River Bend and Thomson Community Unit school districts will be presented with a feasibility study of the proposed consolidation of the two school districts. The feasibility consultants providing the study have visited and extensively reviewed the buildings and their uses, visited with administrators and reviewed programs and curriculum offerings of the districts.

Kathleen Schipper and LeAnn Smith received D.S. Flikkema grants from Heidi Kolk. Schipper received a grant for River Bend Middle School to hold a science assembly. Smith received a grant for Fulton Elementary for the Accelerated Reading Program.

Unity Christian School spelling bee winners included Zack Wilber, seventh grade champion; Elizabeth Striley, eighth grade runner-up; and Aidan Steinhauer, sixth grade thirdplace finisher. The River Bend Middle School spelling bee winner was Andrew Schrader, who defeated Matt Outzen for the championship.

Teachers and the act of self-forgiveness are discussed

By STEPHEN D. HARRISON, M.C. Most teachers went into teaching because they are highly motivated to make a difference in someone’s life.

Oftentimes they themselves were the benefactors of a teacher who motivated them. Perhaps they are looking for that one student to make a difference in their life. Perhaps they themselves were once that one student.

Most human beings reach their maximum frustration when they have put in effort without reward.

Even more in situations where the effort is not appreciated and seems counterproductive. Many responsible teachers will blame themselves.

Sometimes they may blame the administration, the parents or the student themselves.

In order to minimize frustration

and avoid burnout, it’s important to have daily reconciliation. This is best achieved by the psychological concept of forgiveness. This does not need to involve a religious connection although it certainly may tie into one.

The first act of forgiveness is to forgive yourself for both your frustration and your action if you over responded to the circumstance.

Next, it is important to forgive both the child and the event. They are, after all, only a child. Meanwhile, they remain your greatest source of inspiration, why you went into the teaching profession. Especially that very difficult child who you have no more than a one in 100 chance of making a difference. Sometimes, the hardest forgiveness can be that which goes to the parents of such a child who failed to recognize the true problem

and blame you, the teacher. Equally difficult is the notion of forgiving your peers and administration when they have not backed you in the way you feel that you deserve.

Forgiveness does not imply the absence of consequences. Forgiveness means that, to a high degree, we let go of the negative emotions that

allow for only a limited number of consequences. Forgiveness allows the possibility of reconciliation without mandating the particulars. Forgiveness, beginning with self-forgiveness, means that you allow others to choose whether they change behavior while you remain centered and responsible for your own actions and emotions.

DIXON — Sinnissippi Centers is offering up to three $1,000 college scholarships for individuals seeking a career in the human services field.

Information has been shared with high school counseling staffs in Sinnissippi Centers’ service area of Carroll, Lee, Ogle, Stephenson and Whiteside counties.

“Our college scholarship program is available exclusively to those who seek education in human services (social work, psychology, sociology or other human service specialties),” said DeAnne White, Sinnissippi Centers’ vice president and chief administrative officer.

“It recognizes and rewards high school seniors on the path to higher education with a $1,000 scholarship to use toward a full-time or part-time course of study,” White said.

Sinnissippi Centers will award up to three $1,000 scholarships in 2024.

Scholarship applicants need to be a 2024 graduating northwest Illinois area high school senior and plan to enroll beginning in the fall of 2024 in a full-time or part-time course of study at an accredited two- or four-year university in Illinois with the declared

BHC student-athletes named to AD’s Academic List

MOLINE – Student-athletes from all eight Black Hawk College teams have been named to the Athletic Director’s Academic List for achieving a 3.25 grade-point average or higher during the Fall 2023 semester.

The 68 student-athletes on the list represent 49% of BHC players. To qualify for the list, student-athletes must take at least 12 credit hours.

The softball team had the highest percentage of players on the list – 73% of the team achieved a 3.25 GPA or higher for the semester.

Next was the golf team with 69% and the baseball team with 52% of players on the list.

White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Morrison announced its 2024 schedule.

Volunteer training will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10. The Spring Session will be April 16 to May 11, with a possible makeup week from May 14-18. The Summer Session will be May

21 to June 29 with no makeup week because of the holiday. The Fall Session will be from Sept. 10 to Oct. 19 with a possible makeup week from Oct. 22-26.

WHOA also is looking for volunteers to join the team, including horse leaders and sidewalkers for therapeutic horseback riding classes. No horse experience is necessary to sidewalk. There are other opportunities to volunteer as well, such as fundraising and events.

Fillies leverage height advantage by feeding post early and often

That was a big point of emphasis for Morrison in a 46-16 win over Oregon on Jan. 17 at the Blackhawk Center.

Going into the game, the Fillies knew they had a clear height advantage and with that knowledge, they immediately worked to leverage it.

Camryn Veltrop, a 6-foot-2 junior, scored 10 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter as Morrison (16-8) took a 17-4 lead. All 10 of the points came on post layups as senior guard Emery Brewer and junior guard Kaylee Pruis kept the lob passes coming and Veltrop kept scoring.

“It’s definitely a big help, especially when my team is so good at getting passes in,” Veltrop said about her height advantage. “And [my teammates] really help. I wouldn’t be able to get the ball without them. The height helps a lot, but they’re a big part of it.”

Oregon (4-17) got some momentum going in the first 1:30 of the game with back-to-back baskets from sophomore guard Sarah Eckardt and sophomore guard-forward Aniyah Sarver.

Eckardt answered a Veltrop layup in the first eight seconds with a shortrange jumper with 6:30 on the clock and drew a foul on the shot. After the free-throw attempt rimmed out, Sarver scooped up the rebound and put it back in for a 4-2 Oregon lead.

The advantage didn’t last long.

Morrison senior Sarah Weston and Veltrop sparked a 15-0 run with consecutive baskets less than a minute later.

That surge stretched the Fillies’ lead to 17-4 at the end of the first quarter.

“The size is definitely an advantage for them, something that we did struggle with, but for the most part we did what we could on defense,” Oregon coach Olyvia Donahue said. “And on offense, our shots just weren’t falling. I think we were running our offense well, but tonight just wasn’t our night for shots.”

Oregon junior guard-forward Alease McLain nailed a left-wing 3 only 11 seconds into the second quarter, drawing the Hawks to within 17-7, but the Fillies had an answer for everything.

Pruis hit a right-wing 3 just 24 seconds later and an 11-0 Morrison run ensued. Veltrop scored three straight post layups and Weston hit another as

“I think that we passed the ball a lot, which is really helpful in getting people open,” Pruis said about keys to establishing the first-half lead. “We do kind of a 2-3 and I feel like it helps a lot because they are outside shooters.

They don’t really get layups, either, because there’s three people in there, so I feel like that’s helpful, too.”

The Hawks got to within 28-11 by halftime with a mid-range jumper by junior guard Ava Carreno and a shortrange jumper from Eckardt, but the Fillies kept the pressure on in the third and

extended their lead with an 11-4 run.

Veltrop scored six more points on a pair of free throws, a post layup and a putback, and senior Jordan Eads drilled a right-corner 3 followed by a short-range jumper for a 39-15 lead at the end of three quarters.

“We really wanted to come in and not play down to their level because we are a strong team, but we struggle with playing down to team’s level, so we just came out very tough,” Veltrop said. “I think [we limited them by] playing aggressive and our defense has improved a lot throughout the season. We found a new defense and we were just really aggressive.”

Veltrop finished with game highs of 28 points, nine rebounds, four steals and three blocks, and Pruis and Eads chipped in six points each. Pruis had three rebounds, three assists and three steals and Eads had four rebounds and two steals. Brewer dished seven assists and grabbed three steals and freshman Avery White added seven rebounds off the bench.

Eckardt, McLain and Sarver led Oregon with four points each. Sarver grabbed five rebounds and Eckardt added four.
