The Village of Westmont might only be 5 square miles, however the Westmont Park District maintains over 150 acres of park property throughout the village and the Westmont Public Library is an outstanding community asset. Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner

WESTMONT RECOGNIZES EXCELLENCE IN THE COMMUNITY

During the awards program, the following special community recognitions and awards were presented:

The Westmont Chamber Community Awards Dinner is an annual tradition in Westmont designed to provide a special opportunity to pause and recognize the many wonderful volunteers, activities and businesses that work to make Westmont a great place to live, work and visit.

 The 2018 Dick Busse Businessof-the-Year Award recognizes a Chamber business that has excelled in community service, business promotion, civic responsibility and contributions to the betterment of the Chamber and the Village of Westmont.

The nominees for this award were: Uncle Bub’s Award Winning BBQ & Catering and Westmont Yard. The Dick Busse Business-of-the-Year award was presented to Uncle Bub’s Award Winning BBQ & Catering (132 S. Cass Avenue) in recognition of their high level of community interaction and support.

he Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau (WCCTB) hosted the Annual Westmont Community Awards Dinner to recognize area individuals and businesses. The Awards Dinner was held on April 29, 2019 at the Hilton Chicago/Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center.

WCCTB President Steve Wozny noted that “Over one-hundred and sixty Westmont area residents, business owners, and civic leaders attended the Westmont Chamber Community Awards program to demonstrate support for our community. The Westmont Chamber along with the Village of Westmont, Rotary Club of Westmont, Westmont Special Events Corporation and the Knights of Columbus are collectively proud to recognize the individuals and businesses that help contribute to the growth and success of Westmont, in a manner that keeps Westmont a great place to live, work and visit.”

 The 2018 Roger Westman President’s Award recognizes an individual who has performed outstanding service to the Chamber and the Westmont Community.

The Roger Westman President’s award was presented to Joseph P. Moffa, by Westmont Chamber Past President Kevin Carey.  2018 Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year Award recognizes individuals who reside in Westmont and who have demonstrated exceptional community involvement and leadership. Mayor Gunter noted “we have three wonderful people nominated for the Westmont Citizen of the Year that have made such a positive impact to the success of Westmont.” The nominees for this award were: Jennifer Babyar and Larry Babyar, and Stella Qualizza.

The Westmont Citizen-of-the-Year

award was presented to Stella Qualizza

by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter.  The 2018 Educator-of-the-Year Award recognizes a local educator for their outstanding efforts in their field and to the betterment of the Village of Westmont. The Educator-of-the-Year award was presented to John Jonak from Westmont Junior High School.  The 2018 Westmont Public Servant Award recognizes a member of the municipal organizations who demonstrates exemplary public service to the community. The Westmont Public Service Award was presented to Maggie Bjur, Westmont Police Department, by Westmont Mayor Ron Gunter.  The Rotary Club of Westmont Paul Harris Award was presented to Jim Addington in recognition of his exceptional level of community service and volunteer work. The presenters were Mayor Ron Gunter and Village Trustee Harold Barry.  The 2018 Westmont Special Events Corporation “Jim Wright Making Memories Award” was presented to Gregg Pill by Village of Westmont Director of Communications Larry McIntyre and WSEC Entertainment Chair Dave Gullotto.  The Knights of Columbus Grand Knight David Ortman and Knight Hank Anzelone presented the “Knight of the Year” Award to Joseph P. Moffa.

The “Family of the Year” Award was presented to Tony and Sharon Polito.

The Knights of Columbus “In Service to One, In Service to All” Award was presented to Al White.

Home to the Godfather of Blues The 40-plus piece collection of wardrobe costumes, rare photos, classic poster, album covers, plaques, a Grammy award and memorabilia honors famed ‘Godfather of the Blues:’ Muddy Waters, who spent his last 10 years of life as a Westmont resident.

In the early 1070’s, Waters decided to move away from the south side of Chicago. With several young children who he had taken under his wing, he felt that he needed to move into a better environment for his family. His manager found a location in Westmont and Waters fell in love with the community immediately.

After Waters’ wife Geneva had passed away, he met a young lady who he asked to come live with him in Westmont from 1973 until Waters passed away in April of 1983. While the legend of Muddy Waters had been established many years prior to this decade, it is safe to say that his years in Westmont were some of the best years of his life. Personally and professionally, Waters had finally approached “satisfaction.”

Learn more about Westmont history by visiting William L. Gregg’s original 1872 home located at 115 S. Linden Ave. Known as the Gregg House Museum, the residence is home to the Westmont Historical Society and is dedicated to promoting, protecting and disseminating the history of the Westmont area. Through its partnership with the Westmont Park District, artifacts and collections contained in the museum will be preserved for generations to come. The two-story Second Empire-style building showcases the Excelsior Brick Company, which Gregg owned and operated.

Westmont to celebrate the first 100 years in 2021 It was commercial ventures, specifically bricks and stones, which provided the historical foundation for a thriving community. Following the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, brick manufacturers were eager to take advantage of the area’s natural resources to fulfill the huge demand for bricks for the rebuilding of Chicago.

The Chicago-Aurora branch of the Chicago-Burlington & Quincy Railroad, completed in 1864, provided the necessary transportation making current day Westmont the perfect location for William L. Gregg to establish his brickmaking company, Excelsior Press Brick Manufacturing Company. The company employed 120 people and produced 70,000 bricks per day.

Gregg is credited with inventing and patenting the triple pressure brick machine, which is said to have revolutionized the brick industry. Using this method, his bricks could withstand 100,000 pounds of pressure without cracking or disturbance of any kind.

Growth and development revolved around the railroad station, which for many years served as the major transportation route to Chicago. Land developer Arthur McIntosh began buying property in the area in 1920, hoping to found a town where those wanting to build could buy land for as little as $5 down.

In 1921, the Village of Westmont was incorporated. Being the highest location west of Chicago along the railroad, its name was a natural fit. Vince Pastor was chosen as the first village board president and held office for two years.

Through the decades, Westmont has been able to maintain a wonderful community that is just as attractive to businesses as it is to residents. On November 4, 2021, Westmont will celebrate its 100th anniversary of being incorporated in 1921!

Although Mr. Gregg left the area after 3 years, the area still continued to grow.

If you were not aware, WEDP is a public – private partnership with the Village of Westmont and the Westmont Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Bureau.
