Welcome to NIU, Huskies! Whatever path you want to take in preparing yourself for life, we are here to help show you the way. At NIU, you’ll find dedicated staff and faculty who put the welfare and success of our students at the center of everything they do. The start of a new academic year is an opportunity for the university community to demonstrate our commitment to making your time at NIU rewarding, intellectually stimulating and fun. Our goal is that when you leave Northern Illinois University, you have the knowledge, critical thinking skills and engaged learning experiences that will help you succeed in your chosen field. We call this “student career success,” and it’s all about making sure that we are connecting you not only with our great staff and faculty but also the outside world. It is our intention that every experience you have at NIU prepares you to succeed in the rapidly changing world that awaits you after you after graduation. I mentioned engaged learning, and it’s something we take very seriously. It’s all about providing you with as many opportunities as possible to apply your classroom learning to real world problems while still attending school. Each semester, NIU students devise solutions for industry, work as consultants to businesses and help not-for-profit agencies better serve those in need. Many more learn about other cultures while studying abroad or carry out original research under the mentorship of world-class faculty. Being a Huskie also means having access to our alumni network—-240,000 strong—with more than half living and working in the Chicagoland area. A growing number of Huskie alums are giving back to their school by paying it forward—providing internships, externships and mentoring to our students. I encourage you to take advantage of the many available cultural opportunities on campus, it be a concert, play or art exhibition. Take care of your body as well as your mind by participating in one of the dozens of intramural sports leagues available. Explore a new interest through one of the more than 200 student clubs and organizations, or check out the countless opportunities for socializing and service that are part of the thriving Greek culture at NIU; or, take in a football or basketball game or other athletic event. Regardless of what path you choose, seek out people who are different from you, and learn from them. There will be few better opportunities in your lifetime to do so. At NIU, you future truly is our focus. On behalf of the entire university community, I wish you good luck and much success throughout the school year.

From boutique shops, to a haunted theatre, to a variety of ethnic restaurants, downtown DeKalb is a treasure trove just waiting to be discovered by NIU students.
Downtown DeKalb is easily accessible to students. It’s within walking distance or just a quick trip on the Huskie Bus Route #7. The downtown area is home to the Egyptian Theatre, as well as Thai, Mediterranean, Mexican and tapas restaurants. Check out one of the vintage clothing shops, and unwind after a long week of classes at one of the many bars and pubs with outdoor patios. Jessica Antonacci, events manager at the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, believes it’s good for students to get to know their college town. “I think they should get involved with the community, and it’s important to know where they’re going to school. It’s really nice to get the students downtown,” she said. Kim Lamansky, membership manager at the chamber, thinks downtown DeKalb can give the students a sense of home and community. “There are a lot of really nice restaurants here, and it’s nice to get away from campus and explore the area. It gets them connected to something other than their campus groups,” she said.
Egyptian Theatre
Did you know DeKalb is home to one of only six Egyptian Theatres in the nation? And to make it even more interesting, the Egyptian Theatre, which was built in 1929, is said to be haunted. There have been numerous unexplained circumstances that have happened over the years, said Alex Nerad, executive director. “We’ve had several paranormal investigation teams here and every one of them has walked away with videos or photos of unexplained phenomena,” he said. “We’ve heard a woman’s voice asking questions, there have been photos with mysterious figures in them, and doors that open and close on their own. There’s nothing negative, and we don’t have anything to substantiate this, but we like to think they are playful spirits.” Perhaps that’s the reason why the theatre has one of the area’s best haunted houses every Halloween. The Amenti Haunted House runs for three weekends in October, and it has more than 20 rooms on six levels. “We’re the only historic theatre in the country that still has a full-scale haunted house. Most

are in warehouses or things like that. We’re unique.” Nerad said. The theatre features “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” once a month. Not only will the audience see the film on a huge screen, but there’s a live shadow cast. Nerad said performers act out the movie, complete with props, costumes and audience interaction, while the film is playing. “This year is the 40th anniversary of the film’s release,” Nerad said. “This is a bucket list item. Everyone needs to experience this at least once. The shows are usually on a Friday night and usually have a couple hundred people at each.” The theatre also provides NIU students great opportunities for a date night, or a night out with friends. The theatre has many plays, concerts, movies and comedians each year. “Lewis Black and Brian Reagan have performed here recently, as well as country artist JoDee Messina and Gaelic Storm,” Nerad said. “We also show classic movies and documentaries on DeKalb’s largest movie screen. Former presidents JFK and Ronald Reagan have been here in the past.” The next national act will be Richard Marx on September 25th. The Egyptian Theatre comes alive during the holidays. Nerad said they have a lot of holiday shows beginning in November, including “The Nutcracker.” He said they also show holiday films and “a variety of other holiday programming.” The theatre is also a great place for NIU students to volunteer and meet new friends. “We’re a non-profit, so we rely heavily on volunteers and a lot are NIU students,” Nerad said. “Students are needed to take tickets, usher, and work at the concession stand. Students can also volunteer as actors. It’s a great way to learn about the community and get a really great volunteer experience. We’re really a hidden gem in downtown DeKalb.” For more information about the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., visit www.egyptiantheatre. org.
Dining Options
Several unique restaurants line Lincoln Highway in downtown DeKalb and there’s something for every taste and mood. Eduardo’s Mexican Restaurant, located on the corner of Lincoln Highway and Second Street, has an extensive menu, plus a large selection of margaritas. Take advantage of the warmer weather and enjoy your meal on their brick patio. Not only do they have excellent food and drinks, the restaurant features a live blues band on the last Tuesday of each month. Kayla Badon, assistant manager, said there are plenty of TVs in the bar area for students to relax and enjoy a game. “We love the NIU crowd,” she said. “This is a great place for groups or parties to come out and enjoy authentic, upscale Mexican food.” If you’re in the mood for more exotic international cuisine, visit Thai Pavilion, Mediterraneo or Tapa La Luna. Thai Pavilion, 131 E. Lincoln Highway, is described as a “laid back” restaurant that serves authentic Thai food and affordable prices. You’ll find satay, curry and dumplings on the menu. Tapa La Luna, 226 East Lincoln Highway, is a tapas and wine bar. Diners can enjoy small plates, specialty pizzas and even sushi! Tapa La Luna has an extensive wine list so you can perfectly pair your wine with your meal. Mediterraneo, 122 E. Lincoln Highway, serves mouth-watering Mediterranean and Middle Eastern cuisine. You can order online at mediterraneogrilldekalb.com and your food will be delivered right to your door. Their homemade hummus, falafel, spanakopita, gyro and chicken shawarma are some of the highlights on their extensive menu. Visit O’Leary’s Restaurant and Pub, on the corner of Third Street and Lincoln Highway, and play trivia for free every Wednesday while enjoying a beer from one of the best draft selections in the area. On the menu you’ll find traditional Irish fare like Shepard’s Pie, and a wide variety of burgers, salads and flatbreads. O’Leary’s has live music on the first Thursday of every month, and swing dancing on the first and third Tuesdays of the month. Don’t forget dessert! Downtown DeKalb is home to The Confectionary, a locally-owned and operated homemade chocolate and candy shop. You’ll find delectable creams, mouth-watering
8 | Welcome Back | 2015 Back t to School Edition caramels, and hard-to-find chocolate-dipped ginger and sponge candy. The Confectionary is located at 149 N. Second Street. If you’re a morning person, stop by The Lincoln Inn, 240 E. Lincoln Highway, for a delicious, homemade breakfast. Enjoy a hot meal, or stop by the bakery and marvel at their extensive selection of freshly-baked breads, muffins, pastries and cookies. The Lincoln Inn also serves lunch.
DeKalb Farmers Market
Sample fresh local produce and browse local vendors at the DeKalb Farmer’s Market, every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Van Buer Plaza. It runs through September so students still have a few more weeks to take advantage of one of the area’s best farmer’s market. You’ll find much more than fruits and vegetables here; other vendors include local wineries, a creamery, a vegan bakery and fair trade coffee. The market is a great place to grab lunch from Tinez Tacos or Mike’s Empanadas. The farmer’s market accepts debit, credit and link cards.
Hair Care
Students can get a great haircut at Debutantes School of Cosmetology, located at 145 N. Third Street. Ladies’ cuts are only $10, and men’s cuts are $5.The school also offers manicures, pedicures, color treatments and skin care services at very affordable prices. You can find out more about the services they offer at debschool.com.
Shops/Boutiques
Downtown DeKalb is home to several unique stores. From vintage clothing to gift shops, you’ll discover treasures you won’t find at big-box retailers. Cracker Jax, located at 118 N. Third Street, is a vintage and antique shop that offers home décor, clothing and jewelry. Glitter, 124 E. Lincoln Highway, has apparel for all shapes and styles, plus accessories for every occasion. You’ll find antiques, collectibles, gifts and specialty items at My Favorite Things, 249 E. Lincoln Highway. The Gaming Goat, 311 Lincoln Highway, sells all types of games and hosts several gaming nights each month. Downtown DeKalb is also home to a piercing studio and tattoo studio. Out on a Whim offers professional body piercing and is located on Lincoln Highway between First and Second Streets. Proton Tattoo is located at 120 S. Fourth Street. If you’ve ever wanted to try skateboarding, you’ll find the perfect opportunity at Fargo Skateboarding (formerly Smltwn Skate Shop). Located at Seventh Street and Lincoln Highway, the shop offers lessons to all skateboarders, from beginners to advanced, plus open skate sessions. Students can purchase shoes, hats, apparel, and of course, skateboards. Owner Ariel Ries said many NIU students use long boards, which are a good alternative for getting around campus. “They’re a bigger skateboard and have bigger wheels,” Ries said. “Students don’t have to lock them up. They can take them into class.” Coming in October is an 8,900 square foot indoor skate park and training facility. Besides offering lessons and practice space, the facility will host community events that are open to all ages. “Not only is it a community space meant for developing skills, but we’ll have lives music once a month,” Ries said.
DeKalb Library
If you think the library is just a quiet place to study, think again. The DeKalb Library offers music, exciting programs every day, and is also a great resource for NIU students. Edith Craig, communications manager at the library, said any student who has a DeKalb address can get a card and access the library’s vast collection of materials. “We have a host of electronic resources to help students with their projects, including databases they might not have access to,” Craig said. “We have four adult book clubs, concerts, educational series, and they’re all free.” Students who have a card can check out e-readers, books, video games, movies and e-books. The library is a great place to hold a study group or work on a group project. You may notice the library is under construction. When it’s completed in January, the library will have three large
2015 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 9 meeting spaces, more computers, study rooms, and a quiet reading room. “The possibilities are endless. The library is a point of interest that can engage students,” Craig said. “They can enjoy a cup of coffee and read quietly, or come to a program and learn Chinese calligraphy of bridal henna.” The library is located at 309 Oak Street. Students can take the Huskie Line #7 to the downtown DeKalb stop. The library is two blocks north and two blocks east. For more information, visit www.dkpl.org.
Entertainment
The House Café, 263 E. Lincoln Highway, not only has one of the largest vegan and vegetarian menus in the area, but it has live music, standup comedy or open mics every night of the week. The all-ages venue also has a great coffee selection, as well as fresh fruit and vegetable juices. You can try a yoga class on a Yoga Night. Classes are only $5, and the first one is free. “There aren’t many places that are as eclectic and have so many things going on. And it’s right in NIU’s backyard,” said Joel Kennedy, booking manager. The House Café is located at Third Street and Lincoln Highway. Check out www.housecafedekalb.com for a calendar of events, as well as their menu and hours. So there you have it! Try a new restaurant, take in a show at the Egyptian, or browse the racks at one of the boutique shops. As you can see, there’s a ton to do in downtown DeKalb. Grab your roommate, your friends or your significant other and spend an afternoon or evening exploring your new home away from home!

CORN FEST August 28-30
You’re all moved in, you’ve met your professors, survived your first week of classes, and maybe even studied a bit. Now it’s time to blow off some steam and have FUN! Lucky for you there’s plenty of local festivals coming up over the next few weeks, so you can enjoy some great food and great music, all at an affordable price.
Perhaps the most anticipated fest of the season, Corn Fest offers 3 days of music from national and regional recording artists, a beer garden, carnival with thrill rides and most importantly… lots of delicious DeKalb corn! This is one of the only free admission festivals left in the state of Illinois. You can come and listen to music, eat free corn at the corn boil on Sat. Aug. 29th from 11-2 and browse over 95 vendor booths....all for FREE! Corn Fest is known for its 3 days of music on their soundstage. This year’s headliner is Lou Gramm, the voice of the mega-popular band Foreigner. You’ll probably recognize some of Foreigner’s biggest hits, like “I Want to Know What Love Is,” “Hot-Blooded,” “Urgent,” “Feels like the First Time,” and “Jukebox Hero.” Gramm is no longer with Foreigner, but has carved out a successful solo career for himself and still performs all of his top hits from Foreigner. Gramm will perform on Sunday, August 30th at 4:30 p.m. on the Main Sound Stage. Cost is only $5.00. Other bands performing at this year’s Sound Stage includes the area’s favorite regional band, Hi Infidelity, which covers 70s, 80s and 90s rock hits. They’ll headline Saturday night at 9pm. National recording artists 7th Heaven take the stage Friday night.at 9pm. Country music fans aren’t left out; Back Country Roads will be on the Sound Stage on Friday night as well. Several other regional bands will appear on the Sound Stage over all three days. “There’s something for everyone,” said Lisa Angel, Corn Fest chairperson. “We have country, 80s classic rock, modern rock. There is a band that everyone will like. Every genre is truly represented.” And for the thrill seekers, Corn Fest’s carnival has rides that aren’t just for the little ones. Angel said adults and college students will have fun on the bigger thrill rides meant for the older crowd. Individual tickets are available or you can purchase a wristband for unlimited rides for Friday from 3-7pm or Saturday from 11-3pm for $25. You can also purchase an all day wristband for Sunday from 12-6pm for $30 or an all-weekend wristband for $55. The carnival will be located behind Locust Street and between Second and Third streets. Bring your appetite to the fest because about 95 vendors, many serving food, will be there with everything from the traditional corn dogs and elephant ears to Thai food and empanadas. Angel said the vendors keep the food prices affordable, so students on a budget can enjoy local fare without spending too much. Don’t forget to stop into the Main Sound Stage/Beer Garden. You don’t have to be 21 to go in but if you are you can enjoy beer or malt beverages. There is a $5 one time fee to enter each day which will get you right in front of the stage but if you’re low on cash

you can still watch the bands for free on Locust St. The Chuck Siebrasse Corn Boil is the centerpiece of Corn Fest, so stop by Saturday between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. to enjoy some free, delicious, DeKalb sweet corn supplied by Del Monte. The corn is actually picked from the field the night before so you will never taste anything fresher. Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss the Corn Fest Auto Show on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., which showcases classic and muscle cars. The Auto Show is located at City Hall, which is a block south of Lincoln Highway. On Sunday, TAILS Humane Society will be hosting a pet adoption from 12-4pm at City Hall. Come visit all the furry critters and check out how you can help volunteer at the shelter to help walk dogs if you’re missing yours at home. Angel said many students attend the fest every year, and many student organizations often volunteer as a way of fulfilling their community service hours. “Anyone who’s gone to NIU knows about Corn Fest,” she said. “It’s a great place for students to browse the vendors, eat corn and watch bands. And people can come here to enjoy all those things without paying a penny.” Don’t worry if you don’t have your car here in DeKalb. Huskie Line #7 will drop you off right in the middle of all the festivities. Students partying late into the night can also take advantage of NIU’s Late Night Ride, which operates from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. One of its pick up locations is at Walgreens, right next to the fest. Don’t feel like waiting? Downtown DeKalb is within walking distance of the campus and the dorms. Corn Fest will donate part of their proceeds this year to TAILS Humane Society as well as the victims of the Fairdale tornado. For more information about Corn Fest, including hours and a festival map, as well as the complete Sound Stage lineup, visit the website at www.cornfest.com. DEKALB KITE FEST
Sunday, Sept. 13th, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This isn’t your backyard kite flying experience! The 10th annual DeKalb Kite Fest features some of the most amazing kites you’ll ever see. “Some kites are 90 feet in length, and it’s not every day that you see a kite like that go up in the air,” said Debbie Armstrong, co-chair of DeKalb Kite Fest. “We have fish, cats, panda bears, just a huge selection. There are dancing kites and flying kites… and even a candy drop. The kites are unique and come in all shapes and sizes.” This year’s Kite Fest falls on NIU’s Parents’ Weekend, so bring mom and dad to enjoy a beautiful afternoon on NIU’s “North 40” which is located off Lucinda Avenue and Kishwaukee Drive. Marvel at hundreds of kites and visit with some of Northern Illinois’ best kite-fliers and kite-builders. Several expert kite enthusiasts will be on hand to put on a show for the nearly 5,000 people who attend each year. You can even try flying your kite in the specially-designated public kite-flying area. You can bring your kite, make one there, or buy one from the Chicago Kite/Kite Harbor Shop. “All you see is smiles on everyone’s faces. People really have a great time,” Armstrong said. NIU students are a huge part of Kite Fest. Armstrong said about 100 to 150 students volunteer every year. “It takes a lot of people to put on this event,” she said. “The students love it, they love working with kids. We couldn’t do this without them.” Admission is free, and food and drinks will be available for purchase. VIP Parking is available for $3 per car, but the festival is easily within walking distance from NIU’s residence halls. For more information, visit www.dekalbcountycvb.com.
SYCAMORE PUMPKIN FESTIVAL October 21-26
One of Illinois’ premier fall festivals is right in NIU’s backyard! The 54th annual Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, which takes place in beautiful downtown Sycamore, features two carnivals (one for children and one for teens and adults), plenty of local fare, a 10k race and hundreds of pumpkins that are brilliantly decorated by local children. Pumpkin Fest boasts one of the largest parades in the state. The Pumpkin Parade kicks off
2015 Back to School Edition | Welcome Back | 21
at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26th, and proceeds down historic Somonauk Street into downtown Sycamore. The parade showcases bands from all over Northern Illinois, as well as floats and entertainment from local businesses and community groups. Rose Treml, executive director of the Sycamore Chamber of Commerce, described Pumpkin Festival as an “old-fashioned community festival.” “It’s a fabulous festival that draws people from all over the Midwest,” Treml said. “People come for the great food, good music and the pumpkins. It’s just a wonderful fall tradition.” Halloween fanatics will love Scary Stories in the Cemetery, which meets at Sycamore’s Ellwood Cemetery. This free event is recommended for teens and adults. Don’t forget to bring lawn chairs, a blanket and a flashlight. Runners, both novice and experienced, won’t want to miss the 10k Pumpkin Run. The 6.2 mile run goes through downtown Sycamore, then past Somonauk Streets historic mansions before heading along corn fields and finishing on the Sycamore golf course. Treml said about 2,000 runners are expected this year. “One of the best parts about the race is the music and free beer and refreshments at the end of it,” Treml said. “And it’s a fundraiser. All the money goes back to the community.” Treml said NIU students are welcome, and even encouraged to visit Sycamore for the festival. “A lot of students come for the food, and all the vendors are local nonprofits,” she explained. “Students will be amazed at the parade. A lot of the downtown bars and restaurants have specials going on during the festival, and several have bands playing that weekend.” For more information about the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival, visit www. sycamorepumpkinfestival.com.
