French approach taken with Chilean wine

E

mmanuel Riffaud has made more than wine in Chile.

The winemaker at Escudo Rojo, founded in 1999 by legendary French producer Baron Philippe de Rothschild, has a collection of feelings and images that extend well beyond the vineyard and tie him to the land.

“You can sometimes see wild horses running by the Maipo River,” Riffaud said. “In the afternoon, you can feel a light breeze coming in from the Pacific Ocean, and as you walk through the vineyard, you can breathe in the natural smell of the vines, as we use no chemical treatments. It is even more impressive during flowering, when you can smell the aromas of the vine blossom. It’s absolutely wonderful.

“These are the impressions that really strike you when you find yourself in the Maipo vineyard,” he said. “At the very beginning of winter, as the first snowflakes begin to fall, the bodega offers a marvelous view of the sun setting over the Andes Mountains. It’s an amazing sight

that I will never tire of.”

Although the location is different and Chile’s Maipo Valley region isn’t a First Growth Bordeaux from Pauillac, like Chateau Lafite Rothschild, a highly sought after, collectible wine, Riffaud has taken the same approach.

Escudo Rojo drinks like a luxury wine where painstaking efforts are made in the vineyard and cellar to ensure the quality of the wine. It can be enjoyed at a fraction of the cost of Rothschild’s other wines.

Which was Riffaud’s goal as he brought practices used in France by Baron Philippe de Rothschild to the company’s Chilean winery.

“The Baron Philippe de Rothschild mindset is the same in Chile as in France,” Riffaud said. “It’s underpinned by two key concepts: exacting standards and a quest for perfection.

The pursuit of excellence and seeking the purest expression of the terroir are common goals.”

Of the two wines sampled, the most compelling was the Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva 2018 ($21.99), which had black

olive, coffee grounds, cedar, cinnamon stick and tobacco on the nose.

Flavors of plum, hot stone and licorice emerged. A wild, meaty mid-palate was an enticement begging to be found in each subsequent sip.

A blend of 40% cabernet sauvignon, 38% carmenere, 20% syrah, and 2% cabernet franc, it offered the perfect mix of fruit and spice.

With carmenere being one of the last grapes to ripen, Riffaud dialed in the best locations for carmenere in the vineyards. While cabernet is known for its structured tannins, syrah its meaty flavors and cab franc its acidic green note, it’s carmenere that added an extra dimension to the wine.

“Carmenere needs good soil hydrology and high temperatures, which limits the best zones for growing it,” Riffaud said. “It is a variety that has a lot of pigments, especially in the leaves, which is what gives the magnificent red and yellow colors in autumn that are so typical.

“Carmenere is picked at full maturity to avoid any hint of unripeness

in the wine,” he said. “When they show good balance between fruit and acidity, the grapes bring roundness to the blend, as well as smoothly rich and succulent tannins.”

On the Escudo Rojo Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 ($17.99), there were dusty chocolate nibs and black cherries all hung on a stout scaffolding of easily accessible tannins.

Both wines were bargain priced but didn’t cut corners when it came to quality. They had New World approachability along with the complexity and nuance of their French winemaking roots.

“The only difference lies in the expression of the terroir,” Riffaud said. “We use a French approach when making our wines, so here it is a quest for the purest expression of Chilean terroirs but with Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s French style.”

DISCOVERING THE PAST Ways to visit Joliet Iron Works history

ne of the Forest Preserve District of Will County’s most intriguing preserves now has its own museum exhibit showcasing the people who kept the downtown Joliet Iron Works plant humming a century ago.

“Joliet Iron Works: The Industry That Built a Community” is on display at Isle a la Cache Museum, 501 E. Romeo Road/135th St., Romeoville, through Sunday, March 14. Visitors can view the exhibit during museum hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The museum is closed Mondays.

The indoor exhibit allows visitors to view photos, artifacts and publications from the Forest Preserve’s Joliet Iron Works Historic Site collection, which illustrates the remarkable story of Joliet’s steel industry.

“This temporary exhibit brings you back to the days when Joliet was a center for steel manufacturing, and showcases life in and around Joliet Iron Works in the early 1900s,” Jen Guest, a Forest Preserve program coordinator, stated in a news release.

“Using the museum’s collection of the company’s newsletter, we get a glimpse of this company and its groundbreaking approach to safety and the well-being of their workers.”

Visits at the site

Those who are interested in viewing the outdoor Iron Works remnants, which include foundations of the blast furnaces and other structures from the dismantled factory, can tour the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site preserve, located on Columbus Street, east of Route 53/Scott Street in downtown Joliet.

Preserve hours are 8 a.m. to sunset.

“The preserve’s interpretive signs give a general overview of Joliet Iron Works, but the [museum] exhibit focuses on the workers, their sense of community at the plant and safety issues, which brings the story of the site to life,” Guest said. “We have a unique collection of photographs and copies of the historic company newsletter, The Mixer, that would not be available on site in the preserve during a tour. This gives us a chance to showcase some key items from the collection for public viewing.”

Guest said the exhibit is designed to educate visitors about Joliet Iron Works and its connection to the area, and to inspire them to visit the site in person or to join a future tour or online program highlighting the preserve.

“Most people from Joliet can link their family heritage to someone coming to this area to work at companies that made up Joliet Iron Works,” Guest said. “The preserve is unique and unlike any other that we have in the District. It tells a story of the community and industrial history, and is home to urban wildlife.”

Delve into Joliet’s industrial past or fly high with the eagles during season two’s episode one of the Forest Preserve’s nature program, “The Buzz.”

The episode highlights two Joliet jewels: the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site and Rock Run Rookery Preserve.

Sara Russell, a Forest Preserve interpretive naturalist, leads the tour of Joliet Iron Works, which operated on the site from the late 1800s to early 1900s.

“She will show viewers where the old furnaces used to be, and she also will explain what other structural footprints are left behind,” said “Buzz” program host Suzy Lyttle, a Forest Preserve program coordinator. “Plus, viewers will learn the process of making iron and steel and the different jobs and dangers employees experienced.”

The segment also will feature old photos of the massive plant when it was in operation, and drone video of the site, which affords the best view of the ruins left behind.

After exploring Joliet Iron Works, the show will shift gears and head to Rock Run Rookery, which has been a hot site for eagle watching this winter.

Lyttle will highlight interesting facts about the birds, viewing tips and birding dos and don’ts. The segment has video of eagles in flight and on the hunt.

Lyttle said she is thrilled to be going into season two with the show. “There is so much more to explore and share with our viewers,” she said. “This platform is giving us the chance to reach so many new people and share locations that they might never have been able to see on their own.”

ISH MASH Adventures, a new indoor entertainment concept, has opened its doors in Aurora’s Fox Valley Mall.

Inspired by television adventure game shows – like “Double Dare,” “Floor Is Lava” and “American Gladiators” – combined with logic challenges, MISH MASH Adventures creates a new team gaming environment. It’s a fresh way for families, friends or colleagues to bond and enjoy a few hours of active entertainment, a news release stated.

While at MISH MASH, guests play with their team of two to six players, with the aim of beating the test of as many rooms as possible. Each challenge takes around three to five minutes to successfully complete, and teams can attempt the same room as many times as they choose. But watch out – how the challenge must be completed changes every time a room is entered.

MISH MASH Adventures was created to provide friends and family with an opportunity to let go of the norm, challenge themselves and work together – but, most importantly, to have fun.

There are many reasons to make time for “Nomadland” on Hulu, the most practical of which is that it is an awards favorite and you don’t want to be left out of the conversation come Oscars time. It’s also one of the loveliest and most spiritually invigorating films in recent memory, an American odyssey about life on the fringes. Frances McDormand gives an all-time performance as Fern, who takes to the road after her spouse dies and the great recession leaves her with nothing. David Strathairn is also terrific as a fellow nomad, and writer-director Chloe Zhao is a once-in-a-generation talent.

Anyone who’s seen “Gone Girl” knows that Rosamund Pike plays a top-notch sociopath, which makes J Blakeson’s “I Care A Lot,” on Netflix, immediately intriguing. In the film, Pike plays Marla Grayson, a shark with a

severe blonde bob whose evil con is to pose as a conservator and guardian for senior citizen clients whom she promptly steals from. Her scam gets even more complicated when one of her clients turns out to be tied to a gangster played by Peter Dinklage.

Or if you need something more family friendly, “Sonic the Hedgehog,” featuring the voices of Ben Schwartz and Jim Carrey, has come to Amazon Prime and Hulu. AP’s Mark Kennedy wrote in his review that it’s “a feelgood buddy movie for both adults and their own little aliens” that’s also “respectful of the rich history of the brand and yet welcoming to newcomers.”

Are robins really harbingers of spring?

O

K, folks, show of hands. How many of you were raised to believe that robins are the first signs of spring? I know I was.

I don’t remember the exact words, or who said them, but I do distinctly recall my 5-year-old self looking for robins as winter’s cold would begin to ebb. I also distinctly remember finding them that year, and pretty much every year that I looked. There they’d be, bob-bob-bobbin’ along. “Spring’s here!” we’d exclaim, and life would go on – even if we still had occasion to pull out our parkas or shovel the driveway.

Now, were the robins there a month or two prior, when “The north wind didst blow, and we shall have gotten snow,” to paraphrase the nursery rhyme? I do remember seeing them a time or two when it was still quite cold out, and saying to mom, dad or whomever was in earshot that those birds must have gotten their dates mixed up.

So today here we are, riding out some of the coldest weather Mother Nature has thrown at us in at least a couple years, and what birds might we see flitting amid the trees? Yep. Robins.

There’s no doubt these feathered friends, known also as Turdus migratorius, are enjoying a fair share of success right now. And, as is so often the case, we humans are more than a little responsible.

For one thing, through the steps we take to make ourselves comfortable, we also make things easier for robins.

We’ve built structures that offer sheltered and predator-proof nesting locations. How many of you have had robins build nests on your porch pillars or outdoor light fixtures?

A look at Kane County’s Audubon Spring Bird Count data confirms that robins are doing very well in our area.

So well, in fact, that they rank third in terms of total individuals seen over the survey’s nearly 50-year history.

(Coming in at No. 2 is the common grackle, and No. 1 is the red-winged blackbird.)

By now you’re probably thinking, “OK, Otto, we get it. Robins are doing well. But why are we seeing so many in winter? Don’t they migrate? Isn’t their return a sign of spring?”

Well, yes and no. If we look at the fabulous data set housed at ebird.org, which is managed by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we see that robins are reported in Illinois all 12 months of

American robins long have been regarded as a sign of spring. But a robust population and plentiful food choices mean we can see this cheery bird even in winter’s coldest months. the year. Granted, the frequency of sightings jumps as we get into March and April, but even in December and January, roughly one in every five lists reported American robins.

Well, all righty then. Looks like we need to dig a little bit further into what makes robins tick.

Besides shelter, they also need food.

And there again, humans have gone above and beyond.

Our preference for landscaping with trees and shrubs that produce flowers, and therefore fruits, has created a year-round source of food for T. migratorius. True, the image of a robin pulling a worm from the ground is about as iconic as a nature photo can get. But in reality, robins consume a diverse diet that varies with season and availability.

I’d wager that all of you who have been seeing robins this winter have seen them in or near fruit-bearing plantings. Crabapple trees. Hawthorns.

Sumac. Bittersweet. Honeysuckle.

Buckthorn. Roses, with their vitamin C-laden hips. All are readily available in our area and consumed with gusto.

(Indeed, some of these plants are introduced and quite invasive. But that’s another story for another time.)

Suet is another option offered at, you guessed it, feeders placed by humans.

To wash down these delicacies, as well as keep their feathers in peak condition, robins need a source of water. Once again, we have come through on both large and small scales. We’ve built dams that keep water open and flowing on their downstream sides, and we’ve placed heaters in our birdbaths. Check! Another vital requirement met.

A few other things to keep in mind as you observe robins amid the snow and cold: • Migration is taxing on birds of all species. Wear and tear on muscles and feathers can be substantial. Robins, being hardy and opportunistic, can avoid the stress of migration by flying only as far as necessary to find food, water and shelter.

• Robins form flocks when not in breeding mode. Birds in a group have a better chance of finding food and detecting predators than do individuals going it alone.

• As casual observers, we have no way of knowing for sure whether our winter robins are year-round residents or visitors from farther north.

Chances are, we’re seeing a little bit of both.

• Even though we still experience some periods of extreme cold, our recent winters generally have been mild.

Warmer temperatures improve winter survival rates.

I know, it’s hard to give up the idea that robins signal that spring has arrived. If you’re a die-hard robin fan, and I know there are a lot of you out there, all you need to do is modify your technique just a bit. Instead of using only your eyes to spot robins, use your ears too, to listen to their sounds.

If all you hear is cheeps and chatters, you’re observing standard flock communication, which means the birds are still in winter mode. But if you see an individual by himself, and he’s belting out a hearty “Cheery-up, cheerio,” you’ll know you’ve found a bird that’s declaring his territory.

He’s getting ready for the coming breeding season – the time of year you and I call spring.
