Warrants have been obtained for six teens responsible for exploding a “MacGyver bomb” on May 1 at Indian Knoll Elementary School in unincorporated DuPage County near West Chicago, according to a news release from the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. The six teenagers who reside in West Chicago, Carol Stream and Malta have each been charged with one count of disorderly conduct and one count of reckless conduct, which are Class A misdemeanors, according to the release. About 10:30 a.m. May 1, the sheriff’s office responded to a call at Indian Knoll regarding a plastic bottle that exploded near the parking lot and playground of the school. Deputies arrived and determined it to be a chemical reaction device commonly known as a “MacGyver bomb,” the release stated. No one was injured and no other ac-

tive devices were located on the school grounds, according to the release. After following up on several leads, authorities located the teens responsible for the explosion and determined it was an isolated incident, the school was not targeted and no harm was intended to any student. “Thoughtless actions such as this could have severe unintended consequences,” DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba said in the release. “I would like to remind every citizen that if they should see any suspicious activity in their neighborhood, parks or school grounds they should immediately contact their local police agency.”

WEST CHICAGO – A vehicle crashed into an office building Sunday, damaging six gas meters and causing a natural gas leak, according to the West Chicago Fire Protection District. At 11:22 a.m., fire crews responded to the report of a traffic accident on Kautz Road in West Chicago. Upon arrival, crews found a vehicle that had driven through the side of an office building at 1525 Kautz Road and into one of the office units, according to a news release from the fire district. Additionally, the impact sheared off all six of the gas meters serving one end of the building, according to the release. The driver was able to escape from the vehicle and was found walking from the building. The driver was treated by paramedics and taken to Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, according to the fire district. Because of a substantial amount of natural gas that was leaking from the damaged gas pipes and filling the building with combustible vapors, emergency crews from Nicor were requested to combat a potential explosion, officials said. The fire department then used an unmanned water stream to disperse the flow of gas and prevent it from igniting, according to the fire district. A St. Charles fire engine also responded to the incident, and Commonwealth Edison crews arrived and shut off the building’s power as a precautionary measure. After the flow of gas had been stopped, responders ventilated the building and fire companies searched it and used air monitors to check for any areas of combustible gas. Firefighters were on the scene until about 4 p.m. Sunday, when the building was turned over to the property owners for repairs and cleanup, according to the release. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the West Chicago Police Department. WEST CHICAGO – After a long and harsh winter, West Chicago is ready to welcome spring with its annual Blooming Fest event. The garden festival will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in West Chicago’s historic downtown. “People really look forward to this event,” said city Event Coordinator Krista Coltrin. “We look forward to the community coming out, gathering and enjoying a beautiful spring day.” The event will include the West Chicago Garden Club Plant Sale, a car show, a craft show, children’s activities, music and an abundance of healthy food options. The festival started 15 years ago in a parking lot in West Chicago with only the garden club plant sale and a handful of craft and food vendors. It has now grown to four city blocks, and this year it will serve as the launch of city health initiative Healthy West Chicago. In addition to the launch, there will be plenty of other festivities in which to partake. Below are three of particular note:

Blooming Fest – in its 15th year – will take place between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday in West Chicago’s historic downtown. The festival will be the site of the city’s Healthy West Chicago wellness initiative launch, which will include cooking demonstrations and information on nutrition, portion control and how to start a fitness plan, among other health tips. West Chicago City Museum Director Sara Phalen, who is involved in organizing Blooming Fest, said it will serve as the perfect event to launch the initiative. “Blooming Fest is a wonderful community festival that focuses around the spring plant sale,” she said. “The idea of growth and health embodied in the plant sale, makes this event the perfect place to launch Healthy West Chicago

6 Appellate court upholds conviction in Warrenville teen’s 2004 murder SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA WARRENVILLE – An appellate court has upheld the conviction of a man found guilty of the 2004 murder of a Warrenville teen, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Joshua Matthews, 30, of Maywood was sentenced to 100 years in prison in February 2011 after shooting his former girlfriend, 17-year-old Sade Glover, the release stated.

About 10:30 p.m. Oct. 9, Matthews and Glover had a brief altercation in the driveway of her home, according to the release. Matthews then pulled a gun on Glover and shot her at pointblank range five times before fleeing the scene. At the time, battery charges against Matthews were pending, after he allegedly struck Glover in the face several months earlier, the release stated. He was arrested and charged with her murder two days later.

Matthews claimed the trial court erred in denying his request to withdraw his waiver of counsel, according to the release, alleging that after he waived counsel, his phone privileges at the DuPage County Jail changed. However, the appellate court found he “was unhappy with the trial court’s decision to change his phone privileges” and that he “tried to manipulate the court into restoring unlimited phone privileges,” the release stated. Matthews also claimed the trial

court erred in denying his motion to suppress his confession, according to the release, which the appellate court also rejected. “With the appellate court’s decision the final chapter of this senseless murder has been written,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in the release. “It is my sincerest hope that Sade Glover’s family and friends will now be able to go forward with their lives knowing that Mr. Matthews will spend the rest of his life behind bars.”

8 Q & A with the Hearing Doctor Vertigo & Balance Q: What exactly is BPPV? A: here are diferent types of balance disorders. Some sufer with Meniere’s disease, others with vestibular neuritis and others with BPPV (Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo), which is one of the most common Dr. Terri Lightbody balance disorders in (630) 580-5777 older adults. BPPV is characterized by a strong sense of vertigo or a spinning sensation with head movements. he vestibular system or organ of balance is very complex and exists within the temporal bone on either side of the head. he membranous labyrinth within the vestibular system consists of three luid illed tubes (semi circular canals) and two swollen chambers, the utricle and saccule. here is a small dense area of nerve ibers called the macule located in each of the saccule and utricle. Each macule is covered by a membrane that is like jelly and then covered by a blanket of otoconia. he otoconia are tiny crystals of calcium carbonate. hese crystals

transmit information to the brain stem and cerebellum about body movement and orientation. In BPPV, the otoconia has become displaced due to age, injury or infection. It can shit to diferent areas of the membranous labyrinth. his displacement of the otoconia causes mixed signals to the brain which in turn caused dizziness or vertigo. Because dizziness can be related to a number of both benign and serious conditions, a complete medical history and hearing evaluation is important. Treatment for dizziness is varied led by the cause and type of the balance disorder. he goal of treatment should be to decrease or eliminate dizziness which in turn can increase safety, function, and mobility. Some treatment options include physical therapy to reposition the displaced otoconia, medication, occupational therapy, and at times surgery. he ability to move about safely is important as we age. Celebrating the history of Albright art COMMUNITY VOICE Sara Phalen In 1924, Chicago-based artist Adam Emory Albright moved his art studio to Warrenville, which was at the time still a rural community. Finding a new place to create and display his work, Adam opened the Albright Studio and Art Gallery in the former 1858 Methodist Church, on Second Street in Warrenville. This historic building, which is now home to the Warrenville museum, housed Albright artwork created by Adam, and his artist twin sons, Ivan and Malvin, from 1924 until Adam’s death in 1957. Although all three of the Albright artists were well known in the art world, Ivan’s career was catapulted following the Hollywood release of “The Picture of Dorian Gray” in 1945, which featured his painting of the same name. Ivan became world renowned after the movie. The original “The Picture of Dorian Gray” painting is in the collection of The Art Institute of Chicago, with a digital copy on display at the Warrenville Historical Museum & Art Gallery. Ivan’s style of magic realism differed greatly from that of his father’s, which was more of an impressionistic style of figures in country landscapes, while Malvin was more known for his sculptures. Many artists have been inspired by the distinct styles of all three Albrights. The museum currently displays information about the family’s time in Warrenville, as well as other original pieces of Adam and Malvin, and copies of Ivan’s work. This summer, the historical society will further honor the history of the Albrights in the community with the introduction of a new artist-in-residency program featuring artists inspired by one of the three Albrights. The first Albright-inspired artist will be Chris Hodge, whose art will be on display starting June 10. Hodge also will be drawing in the museum’s Art Gallery on select Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the summer. One of the biggest issues of 2014’s DuPage County clerk race was the future of the DuPage Election Commission – namely whether it should continue. Now a pair of local legislators are asking the lieutenant governor’s office to take another look at it. State Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democrat DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplin have teamed up to request a special statewide task force consider dissolving the agency.

The county’s election commission is one of only a few in the state, as most elections are run by each county clerk’s office. DuPage is one of the few that are run by a separate entity. “We had been talking about consolidation efforts in DuPage, so I thought that if we’re going to be serious about consolidation [then] we need to look at the election commission,” Chaplin said. “Maybe it’s not feasible, maybe it’s not worth doing, but we’re asking the task force look at it and act on it if they choose.”

Keep accountability and transparency As state government scurries to fill a projected $8 billion deficit in the 2016 fiscal year budget, it would seem to make sense to accept successful compromises and proven solutions already in place and instead focus on issues that truly have a significant impact on the state’s finances. One successful compromise and proven solution that now is in its fifth year of operation is the website www.publicnoticeillinois.com. PNI is a centralized, aggregated website for all public notices from the state of Illinois, units of local government and the Illinois court system. It’s a free-access website that is updated daily. For more than 200 VIEWS years, newspapers have been Dennis paid to print public notices Derossett – or legal notices as they are often referred to – and to serve as the critically important, independent, third party between units of local government and taxpayers, and have functioned as the official notification system of our court system. PNI was created by state law in 2011 and was approved unanimously by both chambers of the Illinois General Assembly. It requires newspapers to upload all notices to PNI after the notices appear in print. All of this is done at no additional cost to government. No taxpayer money goes toward supporting or managing the public notice website. With each new session of the Illinois General Assembly, local government lobbyists – whose paychecks are funded largely by your tax dollars – repeatedly push bills to eliminate public notices or remove them from newspapers and PNI in favor of their own individual websites. These bills rarely make it out of committee because, frankly, state lawmakers understand that forcing citizens to attempt to locate notices across thousands of websites doesn’t make sense. Local government groups are now using behind-the-scenes tactics to remove public notices from print and from PNI and, instead, have the notices placed on their individual websites. But, this time they have a new twist: They are claiming that having to be accountable and transparent through the current public notice process is an “unfunded mandate,” and they want to do away with it. The simple fact is that, for them, this issue is not about money; it’s about reducing transparency and accountability to the taxpayers. Local government officials should focus on the big-impact issues, allow the proven public notice solution in our state to keep on working and not spend so much time and taxpayer dollars on how to be less accountable and less transparent.

Consolidation efforts a great step forward In the aftermath of the Illinois Supreme Court’s expected decision to strike down the 2013 pension reform law, the state now finds itself in an even bigger fiscal hole than the one it already faced. There’s no telling how our officials will proceed. Whether the governor and Legislature opt for raising taxes, reducing services or putting off the problem, or some combination of those options, there’s clearly going to be less money around to do the important things that government needs to do. Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti’s task force, which looks at consolidation and unfunded mandates, now is more relevant than when it was created. The state and DuPage County can’t afford to tolerate the waste that comes from duplicated services and the overhead created by duplicated bureaucracies. Chances are, everyone’s heard this by now, but it needs to be repeated anyway: Illinois has far more units of government than any other state in the U.S., with almost 7,000. No other state even has 5,000. That’s right – we could eliminate 2,000 governmental entities in Illinois (almost 30 percent of the state’s total) and still lead the nation. Sanguinetti, a former Wheaton City Council member well versed in the mishmash of agencies that lord over DuPage County, stopped by West Chicago recently to talk about her task force’s effort. “This is not the first study of its kind when it comes to units of government,” she told a gathering of the League of Women Voters of Wheaton. “Prior administrations have conducted these studies, and then nothing happens with them.”

But the push for consolidation in DuPage already has begun, and there’s cause for optimism that it might have some teeth this time. County Board Chairman Dan Cronin has talked about dissolving the DuPage Fair and Exposition Authority, which exists solely to receive and then dole out funds to the DuPage Fair Association for the annual DuPage County Fair. In 2014, the County Board dissolved the redundant Fairview Fire Protection District and reportedly was looking to do the same to the North Westmont Fire Protection District and the Salt Creek and Highland Hills sanitary districts. And now, state Sen. Chris Nybo, R-Elmhurst, and Democratic DuPage County Board member Liz Chaplan are teaming up to ask Sanguinetti’s task force to consider eliminating the DuPage Election Commission. In most other counties in Illinois, elections are run by the county clerk’s office. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” Nybo said. Those are the kinds of questions we need to be asking all across the county and the state. There are going to be hard financial decisions happening in Springfield that are going to painful. There’s no way around it. Consolidation has the potential to create meaningful savings in a relatively painless fashion. It won’t solve the budget crisis all by itself, but it’s certainly a responsible place to start attacking the problem.

This is regarding the message that shelters are not used. People need to view the animals because adoption is a serious responsibility. You can’t just look online. Stop shooing people away from the shelters. Adoption is a serious responsibility and you don’t want them going to the wrong people, so allow them to view the animals.

Bullying begins at home I have been a witness of bullying from friends’ children, nieces, nephews and now as young as my grandchildren’s ages. This type of attack sets the stage for a child’s life. They experience low self-esteem and no self-worth. As a result, this type of behavioral attack can lead to suicide because of all the despair the person is feeling. My newest discovery is seeing this firsthand from children’s parents. They bully other parents by forming followers other than leader-type parents’ to attack other parents. Then, from their parents actions, the kids do as they see. The parents around here need to focus on their own lives and stop trying to ruin other parents’ and children’s lives. That means stop the attacks through both verbal confrontations and social media outlets.

If you don’t like it, consider moving from Downers Grove Last week, folks complained about spending by the Downer’s Grove Park District and about the homeless in the library. Have you ever seen how busy the Park District fields are? While I don’t enjoy the homeless hanging around the library, under what legal authority can you exclude them from a public facility? The previous week, someone was crabbing about the Downers Grove Fire Department. Is it possible the same person was moaning earlier about the ill-fated plan to build a new police station and village hall? Sounds like you think everything is a mess. Maybe you should consider moving – everyone would be happier.

Hidden gem in Lemont What an incredible story that was shared in the May 8 edition of the [Lemont] Suburban Life. Local and nearby businesses helped to support the new program that has been introduced to the students. The article failed to mention, Lemont has a “hidden gem” right in the heart of its downtown. Lemont’s quarry trails are at the hub of an incredible interlinking trail system connecting and soonto-be [connecting] Argonne, Heritage, Centennial [and] Cal Sag trails. The state and local municipalities are in the midst of a major trail expansion that seems to be nearly complete. This program helps to introduce and bring more awareness to what Lemont has to offer from a[n] outdoor recreation and tourism destination.

Hire from within the community The village of Lemont workers are so busy that they are passing their work onto another firm at another expense to the homeowners for sprinkler verification. I suppose thinking up new taxation does take time. Why didn’t you hire someone in Lemont to do the work?

The commission was created more than four decades ago, according to the county’s website. As a separate entity, it requires separate personnel, extra office space and extra taxpayer dollars – something worth looking into, Nybo said. The two have put in a formal request for the Local Government Consolidation and Unfunded Mandate Task Force, helmed by Lt. Gov. Evelyn Sanguinetti. The group is made up of a number of stakeholders from across the state, including County Board Chairman Dan Cronin. Its task is to try to eliminate wasteful government bodies and burdensome state mandates in light of the state’s fiscal crisis. Currently, commission Chairwoman Cathy Ficker-Terrill, Vice Chairman Christopher Hage and Secretary Art Ludwig each make $27,500 annually. Each are appointed by the county board chairman. The commission is scheduled to meet 22 times this year. Neither Nybo nor Chaplin could estimate how much the county could save through elimination. Chaplin said she believed the is-

sue would be “non-controversial,” as the commission didn’t collect a tax levy. Because most counties pay county clerk staff to do their normal duties as well as electoral duties, Chaplin said the clerk was “paying two people to do what one person already does.” Ficker-Terrill was not available for comment and county spokeswoman Joan Olson declined to comment until more formal action was taken. In a recent interview, Sanguinetti said that “everything is on the table,” but promised a fair look at each suggestion and more. “I think we all understand as Illinoisans that we all have to go on a fiscal diet – we get it,” she said. Nybo said Chaplin approached him with the idea, and that the idea had merit. He said he hoped the consolidation would put the power back into an elected office and setting up a system where the parties themselves choose who sits on the board. “We’ve merely asked at this point that the government task force look at that issue and determine whether there is a cost savings there that can enhance accountability and other efficiencies in terms of personnel,” he said. “We just want a sincere and honest look at the suggestion.”

Suburban Life celebrates women By F. AMANDA TUGADE atugade@shawmedia.com In an effort to continue a new tradition, Suburban Life Magazine hosted its second annual Women of Distinction Awards event May 7 at Seven Bridges Golf Club in Woodridge. The event, which stems from a tradition started by Shaw Media and McHenry County Magazine in 2012, recognizes 12 women of the western suburbs for their dedication to building and bringing together their communities. The awards ceremony welcomed 190 guests, including last year’s winners and the 2015 honorees’ closest friends, family and colleagues. “We have a remarkable group of women,” Suburban Life Media General Manager Laura Burke said. While Shaw Media has spent the past few years honoring women for their contributions, the event continues to inspire others to work toward their cause, Burke said. The recipients, who were selected by an outside committee, were given a moment to reflect on the occasion, share pieces of advice and thank those who have helped complete their mission.

Huerta Shines for Red Stars in 3-0 Win over Boston Chicago, Illinois – Saturday’s meeting between the Chicago Red Stars and the Boston Breakers was a game of firsts. Hosts Chicago earned a convincing 3-0 victory behind standout performances by several rookies and newcomers, Sofia Huerta leading the charge with two goals and an assist. Former Wisconsin star Cara Walls also had her first tally at the pro level and Kentucky product Arin Gilliland recorded her first career assist. Goalkeeper Michele Dalton earned a shutout in her first ever NWSL match. The Red Stars came close to grabbing the lead less than six minutes in, Vanessa DiBernardo releasing Huerta and the 22-year-oldfinding her match in Breakers netminder Jami Kranich, who rushed off her line for an outstanding save. Mere moments later, Huerta was at the center of another attack, as she sprinted up the left flank and produced a wicked centering cross that was inches too tall and skipped off the forehead of Alyssa Mautz on the goal-line. Shot-stopper Dalton guarded the net for Chicago in the place of World-Cup-bound Canadian star Karina LeBlanc. The26-year-old came up with her first noteworthy block in the 16th minute, Kristie Mewis releasing a thunderbolt from the top of the box that Dalton did well to parry wide. The home side quickly reclaimed control of the play, Huerta sending in a cross from the right and Jen Hoy’s fight seeing the ball pop out near-perfectly to Rachel Quon, whose effort at the doorstep was denied by a last-ditch sliding tackle. The Red Stars came agonizingly close to opening the scoring on the immediate counter. The squad was also a perfect 6-0 in their first go-round in the Metro Suburban Conference, outscoring the opposition by a 24-1 margin. As a result, Wheaton Academy was awarded the No. 1 seed in the Class 2A St. Francis sectional. Rounding out the top four seeds in the sectional are Nazareth, St. Francis and Riverside Brookfield.

In goal, Zoe Welsh has allowed 10 goals in 16 contests.

Outlook: A young team with two seniors on the roster, West Chicago has hit some bumps in the road this spring. The Wildcats started out well, winning five of their first nine matches, but have gone 1-6-2 since then, which includes a 3-0 loss against Downers Grove North on May 9. They hope to turn things around in time for the postseason.

He finally should get to compete Friday at Hinsdale Central. “It’ll be nerve-wracking, crazy nerve-wracking, but it’ll be a good experience,” DeCrane said. “I’m excited, very excited.” DeCrane is not alone. With four returnees from its 2014 state championship lineup, Wheaton co-op returns to the eight-team state field with the chance to become the second team to win four consecutive titles. Wheaton co-op captured the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional May 6 with a season-high 153.15 points – the highest score among the state’s five sectionals. Senior Ben Szot won all-around [career-high 53.85], pommel horse (9.0), parallel bars (9.05) and high bar (8.75). Junior Lucas Cooperman, second in all-around (51.30), DeCrane, seniors Cory Drummond and Alec Modransky, sophomore Austin Tate and freshman Aiden Moran also qualified for Saturday’s individual state meet. “I think our athletes believe that they can achieve at a high level,” Wheaton co-op coach Greg Gebhardt said. “If we want to compete [at state], we have to continue to get better and continue to hit.” Szot, Cooperman, Modransky and Tate return from the 2014 state lineup. Szot also was second on still rings (9.0) and parallel bars (8.7) and shared second on floor with Cooperman (9.2). “I put in a lot of extra work on high bar, which I think really helped. I hit everything on floor and I just felt like I had a really good day,” Szot said. Cooperman only competed on floor and high bar last season. Cooperman also tied for third on vault (9.1), was fourth on high bar (8.05) and shared fourth on horse with Modransky (8.05). DeCrane was second on vault (9.15), and Drummond was fourth on parallel bars (8.5). “We’ve had some people step up that I never thought would the way that they did. I’m very impressed,” Cooperman said. At state, Wheaton will be challenged by Stevenson [152.30 sectional score], Willowbrook (148.40) and Glenbard West (148.05). “It’s going to be close, going to be really close no matter what happens, but we’ve got a shot,” DeCrane said.

The Tigers have suffered more than their fair share of injuries this spring. Ten of the 18 players on the roster, including five starters, have been out for extended periods and the team has played only three games with its usual starting lineup. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” South coach Guy Callipari said. “Nobody is complaining of not enough playing time. I think it’s the first time I’ve actually had the kids go, ‘Can I come off?’ “We have a lot of kids who, God bless them, are playing through pain and they shouldn’t have to, but we are just not that deep. We only rostered 18 and our JV team is in the same situation.” Somehow, the Tigers (9-7-1) have put together a winning record. They assured themselves of at least a .500 regular season Saturday by holding visiting Batavia (12-3-4) to a 0-0 tie at Red Grange Field as goalkeeper Nell Rosenthal made eight saves to record her seventh shutout. “We’ve just been trying to rest up during the week and we try to push through,” South senior midfielder Tori Adomshick said. “We’ve been getting some help from the JV team, which has been nice to give some of our players a rest, but we’ve just been pushing through and trying to do the best with what we have and that’s all we can do.” Adomshick is one of the few starters who have remained injury free and she has teamed with senior Alexis Jakuszewski, a UIC recruit, and junior Anna Fank to form a healthy attack. Fank has scored 11 goals, while Jakuszewski has 10 and Adomshick eight. That gives the Tigers hope heading into the playoffs. South is seeded sixth at the Schaumburg sectional and is in the Wheaton North regional. A win against West Chicago to start the playoffs could bring a showdown against crosstown rival Wheaton North in the

I think we definitely have the talent to do well in the playoffs.”
