People don’t necessarily want to pay late, but a majority of the people may be paying let because they lost their job.” The conversion will make it easier for residents, who will receive smaller monthly bills, officials said. VILLA PARK – The Village of Villa Park will convert its utility billing from a quarterly system to a monthly basis beginning later this Spring. The conversion is being implemented to create manageable payment schedules for residents. The monthly bill, which will include water, sewer and garbage, will be divided into two groupings. Group 1 will include residents living north
of St. Charles Road and Group 2 will include residents living south of St. Charles Road. Group 1 will be billed between the 18th and the 20th of the month, and Group 2 will be billed between the 27th and the 29th of the month. The townhomes on North Avenue will be included in Group 2. Village officials during a Villa Park Village Board meeting March 24 discussed the conversion, and trustees voted against raising the current 5 percent late fee to 10 percent.

said. “It affects the calf muscles first. Within the last year, I’ve lost a centimeter and a half in both of my calves.” Symptoms for Gannon began at 8 years old and progressively got worse. She was originally treated for Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy Syndrome, but despite physical therapy, the symptoms got worse. “It just never got better, and once I got to high school, things got a lot worse,” Gannon said. “I was still in regular PE and was falling down. They would have to come with a wheelchair to get me.”

LOMBARD – When Pearl Gannon took the stage at the Ms. Wheelchair Illinois competition last month, she didn’t have a speech prepared, but she knew what needed to be said. “I have always wanted to go out and speak about disabilities, awareness and positive mental health,” Gannon said she told the judges. “[Because] when you have a disability that gets worse over time, you deal with that depression.” Gannon, 27, a Lombard native and a former Villa Park resident, was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Illinois 2014 on March 22, and will now use her platform to raise awareness about issues affecting individuals living with disabilities, including societal prejudices.

Ms. Wheelchair America? Gannon has about 10 speaking engagements lined up this year, and will begin campaign-
ing to raise the necessary $2,000 to compete in the Ms. Wheelchair America competition in August. While Gannon would love to win, she is more enthusiastic about getting the opportunity to meet the other state winners. “It’s really going to be about learning everyone’s platforms and how we can use that in our own states to raise awareness,” Gannon said. “She’s going to be a fine representative for Illinois,” Reinhardt said. “I am extremely proud of her. This is going to be a challenge for her endurance-wise, but I think over the course of playing basketball, she’s learned how to pace herself and that is what she is going to do.” Gannon’s long-term dream is to compete with the USA Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team in the 2016 Paralympic Games, but she knows her CMT may hinder that. More importantly, Gannon is studying to be a social worker focused on early intervention. “For me, getting a degree is more important because that way I can make a difference in people’s lives,” Gannon said.

LOMBARD – A Lombard man arrested in December on child pornography charges was released from prison Monday after striking a plea deal with prosecutors, according to DuPage County State’s Attorney spokesman Paul Darrah. Big changes coming in DuPage County Recently, my children’s grammar school, Emerson Elementary, nominated its newest immigrant students – children still in touch with their heritage – to be leads on a “Cultures Collide” project. It was a great example of how we in DuPage County are discovering new strength in our growing diversity. Seventeen countries were represented by the student leaders. Those kids were the experts – no matter their language ability, test scores or family income. As group leaders, they were a part of creating multimedia presentations and sharing key cultural items. COMMUNITY They radiated confidence VOICE and success in a day built to Elizabeth showcase their background as Higgins an asset. So much was accomplished through this project, most importantly a demonstration of our global citizenship. As the Senior Program Director for People’s Resource Centers Empowerment Programs, I have the privilege of getting to know the parents of many of my children’s immigrant classmates. Our new neighbors are an amalgam of backgrounds – professionals who have been hit by the recession; families seeking good schools, safe streets and a sense of belonging; newly arrived residents with refugee status and unimaginable experiences requiring determination and perseverance. Many of these neighbors are taking steps to better their lives through help from organizations such as PRC. They are learning English and improving their computer skills. They are completing their GED and seeking employment to support their families. Clearly there is a need to do even more. By 2020, DuPage County is estimated to have no ethnic majority. By 2043, it is estimated the U.S. will be a nation with a minority majority. DuPage is undergoing a dramatic shift ahead of our nation’s trends, with our schools and nonprofit agencies being at the front line in welcoming new neighbors. People’s Resource Center is often contacted as a local voice regarding “cul-de-sac” poverty: the fact that in Chicagoland and other metro areas, more people are now living below the poverty line in suburban communities rather than in urban centers. We’ve long been a nation of English Language Learners starting off with few resources; a country where the American Dream is built on an abundance of hope, grit and dreams for our children of a better life. As we go forward as a community, let us come together doing what we’ve done so well for so long. Let us find room at the table for all, despite our differences. Let us utilize our strengths as neighbors to help within our schools, within our nonprofit networks, within our community.

Most folks have a sort of general idea of the hard work and training that goes into being a firefighter, but a group of Villa Park residents are going to get a firsthand look. The Villa Park Fire Department is planning its first Citizen’s Fire Academy to give a group of 12 to 15 students a series of lessons on what firefighters do.

Comparing La Grange to Mayberry a compliment are not ticketed because they fail to change their address on their license plate information as required by state law. There are as many as seven vehicles on my block that never purchased vehicle stickers for as many as three years. They neglect to move their cars for the snow plows or street sweeper and are almost never ticketed. Regarding comparing the village of La Grange to the town of Mayberry on “The Andy Griffith Show,” (March 26), Deputy Barney Fife was supposed to be a “bumbling goof.” He was a funny character (which Don Knotts portrayed brilliantly). Aunt Bee was not a gossiper, but a loving caregiver for Sheriff Andy Taylor and his young son, Opie. And Gomer Pyle was not a “dimwitted mechanic” but a naive, good-hearted gas station attendant (Goober was the mechanic). All of the main characters were caring and loving, not just Andy. As Andy Griffith once said, the show was about love. To compare La Grange to Mayberry is the highest compliment you can give. As they say in Mayberry, “Keep a good thought.”

With the summer season coming, there’s gonna be a lot of walkathons, runs and marathons for charitable organizations. Why don’t these organizations combine their walks with neighborhood cleanups? I’m sure people in the neighborhood appreciate it, and collecting donations as they clean up various blocks and sections and parks of the area, they would gather more money for their charitable organizations, instead of just people walking on an assigned path. Collect the recyclables separate, garbage separate and if there’s any hazardous materials found, keep those separate. If some group came down my block and was collecting garbage, I’d sure give them some money for doing it. And it’s a win-win situation. Neighborhood wins and the charity wins.

GLEN ELLYN – Al Lewek is the definition of a self-made man. The owner of Lewek Photography and Frame Studio, 507 Pennsylvania Ave., is celebrating his 35th year in business and refers to his Glen Ellyn storefront as a second home. “The only thing I’m missing in the back is a cot,” he said. Lewek’s love of photography was established decades ago, when the Wheaton-Carol Stream native took a high school job in the photo department at Montgomery Ward of Yorktown Center. That position led to Lewek being hired as a clerk at Yorktown Camera in 1967. It was there, he said, that he received his industry training, learning about business, sales, customer service, photo equipment, camera accessories and darkroom work. “I just pretty much taught myself based on what I saw and what I liked,” Lewek said. He devoured books and magazines about photography and shot his first professional job in 1969. Lewek opened his original studio five years later on Westmont Avenue in Lombard, before relocating to downtown Glen Ellyn four years after that, late in 1978. He’s been there ever since. His studio has always been a one-man operation, with the exception of his wife’s help early on and a business assistant he employed for 13 years in the middle of his career. Most of his customers are referrals, he said, and residents of the Wheaton-Glen Ellyn area. “The community’s been fabulous,” he said. “They appreciate this type of service and product.” Lewek, a Lombard resident,

has been a member of the Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce since opening his studio three and a half decades ago. He is also a 25-year member of the Rotary Club of Glen Ellyn and has previously served as president of both organizations. “Al is one of those lovely, giving guys,” said chamber co-executive director Georgia Koch. Lewek offers family and business portraits, digital printing and retouching, event photography, vintage restoration, passport pictures and framing. He no longer works weddings, although he estimates he’s photographed close to 3,000 throughout his career, nor does he take children’s portraits. Lewek said he’s seen the industry change. With the shifting emphasis on digital images, people rarely open photo and framing studios today. “It’s important to balance the new with the old,” said Alliance of Downtown Glen Ellyn Executive Director Carol White. “I think that’s what Al does for us.” Despite a decline in business during the recession, Lewek said demand has grown in recent years. “It’s been a nice ride so far,” he said. He plans to keep up the business for another five or 10 years, before selling or closing it to retire. “I’d like to hit the 40 years mark,” he said, “just to say I did it.”

Rob Hatfield, the church’s pastor for 25 years, died of a heart attack in February 2013. As the church family grieved its sudden loss, the lighting project started in May and progressed during the next several months. One year later on Feb. 16, the church named Hatfield Hall after its long-time pastor. Three days before the dedication ceremony, the final lights were installed. “It was perfect timing,” Herbert said, adding that improving the lighting had been a goal of Hatfield’s. “These people coming in at this difficult time in the church’s history was really neat.” The Lombard church learned about Project Green and the grant by word of mouth from another church. After serving as liaison between the church and Project Green, Herbert, who owned a home improvement business before retiring, said he would definitely recommend this opportunity to other nonprofits. “It’s overwhelming. They wanted to do this,” Herbert said of Project Green. “I understand the firm gets paid for this. But they went above and beyond on this.” In addition to using less energy, the new florescent bulbs are expected to last up to 10 years and the LED lights 25 years. “None of us are going to miss getting up on big tall letters and changing bulbs,” Herbert said.

LOMBARD – The naked eye might not be able to detect what $44,000 in lighting renovations looks like, but the environmental impact for First Church of Lombard UCC is difficult to miss. More than $44,000 in outside financial assistance allowed the church, 220 S. Main St. in Lombard, to upgrade its lighting with energy-efficient florescent and LED bulbs in all three of its buildings: Outreach House, Maple Street Chapel and the main church building. In the recently renamed Hatfield Hall on the church’s main campus, the upgrades reduced the room’s wattage needs from 15,000 watts to just 1,100, according to Larry Hebert, a member of the church’s management committee. Nearly 140 bulbs were changed in the main sanctuary, and even the six light towers in the parking lot received a makeover and went from 960 watts to 78 watts each. A grand total of 32,514 annual kilowatt hours will be saved (from 40,810 to 8,296) as a result of the upgrades, according to Project Green Environmental Solutions, which did the work. Replacing the fixtures and bulbs in Hatfield Hall alone cost about $10,000. “It was going to be a long time before the church was able to do something like that,” Herbert said. That’s where Project Green came in. The Forest Park company, a Commonwealth Edison trade ally, helped the church obtain a Small Business Energy Savings subsidy from ComEd and a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation, which combined to cover about 72 percent of the project costs. Project Green president Michael Holmes said his company chipped in the rest in the form of labor and engineering costs. “We do so many regular businesses, when we get a chance to do something good like this … we jump at the chance,” Holmes said. “We get to help out and feel good about it too.” The opportunity came at a difficult time for the church.

Media reporting on pension crisis is unfair
More information needed on backyard chickens
The media is not reporting the pension crisis fairly. What they are leaving out is the fact that teachers in Illinois are not eligible for Social Security. They do not get Social Security when they retire. They get their pension instead. That’s it. You can’t rip that out from under them. How would you like it if we ripped the Social Security out from everyone because we want to pay less taxes there? You can’t steal the teacher’s retirement. They need their pension. They worked that job and that is part of their contract. It’s not right to go back on your word. The media needs to report that, and they’re not reporting it. They all just talk about, you know, “Oh, the pension reform and how much money we can save if we change the pensions.” Hello? You’re taking away something that’s contractually owed to the teachers. They don’t get Social
The current Downers Grove Village Council is debating the loosening of restrictions to allow keeping chickens in more backyards. The mayor appears to be in favor of the loosening, having temporarily kept someone else’s chickens in his own yard, as reported in the March 26 Suburban Life. The duration of the mayor’s fowl experience was not given. One group has not been canvassed but should be. That group is Downers Grove Cealtors. Will local Realtors celebrate or downplay the loosening of restrictions to allow more chickens in the village? Are property values likely to be affected? Also, the village ought to exam a recent referendum in California forced by concerns of animal rights groups. That referendum resulted in forcing egg producing chickens to either be free running or to be kept in much larger cages.

When Cathy and Dave Seiden heard their local Jewel-Osco had recently sold a winning $1 million lottery ticket, the couple immediately began tearing the house apart to find a ticket Cathy had just bought from the store. “That’s where I grocery shop every week and I often buy a lottery ticket while I’m there,” Cathy told the Illinois Lottery. After a frantic search, the Downers Grove family found their ticket in a stack of papers and checked the winning Mega Millions numbers on www.ill inoislottery.com. The Downers Grove residents won $1 million, matching the first five numbers in the March 18 Mega Millions drawing. “We were absolutely shocked,” she said. “We feel very lucky.”
Cathy bought the winning ticket out of the lottery selfserve machine at Jewel-Osco, 2317 75th St. in Woodridge, according to an Illinois Lottery press release. The retailer received a $10,000 bonus, 1 percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket. Dave works in Information Technology for Valley View School District and Cathy is a first grade teacher for Downers Grove School District 58. “Cathy is a very organized person, but she gave the ticket to me and I had no idea where I put it,” Dave said. The family plans to invest the windfall in college funds for their two children. When asked if he had any advice for other lottery players Dave told the Illinois Lottery, “Sign the back of your ticket… and let an organized person hold onto it.”

Mago conjures lively setting for Mexican dining BOLINGBROOK – When dining out, sometimes it’s nice to get hit with some degree of spectacle – bright colors, live music and big tastes. For those times, Mago Grill & Cantina in Bolingbrook is a fine place to indulge in elevated Mexican fare. The decor hits you like a hot pepper. The walls are painted in bright purple and orange, with the restaurant’s name in giant, pop-art letters adorning one side. Rows of luchador masks line the back walls. Another wall shows off row upon row of various tequilas and spirits, all in colorful displays. A live mariachi band began playing among patrons as my date and I left – and the table they were singing to seemed delighted. The meal started like many do at Mexican restaurants, with chips and salsa. Mago, however, upped the ante with warm chips and a trio of three brightly colored and wonderfully fresh and flavorful salsas. The cilantro-based one was a personal favorite. We followed with a ceviche tasting, featuring a citrusy shrimp, lime and cilantro tilapia, and scallop chile. Much like their salsa predecessors, all three were highly distinctive. The scallop, in particular, was well-cooked and deftly balanced with some vinegar acidity. The shrimp dish included olive tidbits, adding a layer of complexity and welcome contrast with the other two. And the main events – the chicken mole and the beef and cheese chile rellenos – both deeply impressed. I noticed that Mago devoted an entire page of the menu to five different types of mole sauces and their eight meat

Thankfully, that time and dedication were evident in the flavor. The mole ranchero, featuring chile ancho, chile pasilla and pumpkin seeds, was very straightforward, but had a ring of authentic smokiness that screamed care and love. And simply put, the rellenos were some of the best I have ever had. Both the cheese and beef versions were perfectly breaded and fried, with nary a bit of batter coming off the peppers as you ate them. But the true test was my date, who is a connoisseur of the stuff. She, too, gave them the stamp of approval – they managed to have strong flavors without overpowering any one ingredient. The beef was well-seasoned and stood its own under delicious heaps of sauce, while the cheese had just enough body to remain intact yet perfectly melted.

VILLA PARK – Willowbrook’s baseball team was third in the West Suburban Gold last year with a lot of key seniors. Despite the losses to graduation, coach Vic Wisner thinks the Warriors still have enough pieces to contend in the Gold again. Senior pitchers T.J. Case, a Division I recruit bound for High Point, and Jake Cady, committed to NAIA Campbellsville, give the team a pair of quality pitchers at the top of the rotation. Cady also will be a big part of the lineup, along with seniors Mike Rothmund and Brian Johnson. Rothmund is a big, powerful first baseman headed for Illinois-Springfield. Seniors Tyler Vavrek and Tyler Zunkel, a transfer from York, also have varsity experience. Zunkel brings speed to the leadoff spot in the batting order. The current junior class won the conference title as sophomores. Talents such as catcher Dom McDonnell, outfielder Trey Jones and pitcher Mike Petruzzi will try to make an early impact. Sophomore pitcher Matt Pizur had an impressive summer and has the inside track to join Case and Cady in the threeman conference rotation. “I believe we will be very deep in our pitching department,” Wisner said. “I think we could really surprise some people who think we lost so much with last year’s team. We will be able to put the ball in play better and run better than we have.”

LOMBARD – After having a powerful offense last year, Montini’s baseball team will rely on its pitching staff this season. The Broncos return Eric Frontzak, Sean Frontzak and Tyler Quick to the mound after each saw significant time and handled varsity ball well a year ago. Eric Frontzak posted five wins with a 1.75 ERA as a junior. Junior Jordan Lazowski, who is in line to be the fourth starter, drew comparisons to Greg Maddux from coach Bob Landi. “I’ve never seen a kid in my years of coaching that can hit his spots as well as he can,” Landi said. “He doesn’t throw very hard, but it’s amazing how frustrated kids are against this kid.” Junior left-hander Kyle Jackson also joins the staff after transferring from St. Patrick. First baseman Jake Mecacci was the backup catcher last year, but he hit .450 in the summer and is slated to be the No. 3 hitter for Montini after committing to St. Mary’s (Minn.). Kline has committed to Brunswick Community College in North Carolina. Senior centerfield Rhett Wojkovich also will bring a lot of speed to the lineup. “We’d love to defend our conference title,” Landi said. “We’ve got some good pitching, and with the experience we have we should have a pretty good season.”
Strong start gives Willowbrook soccer a boost By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com BRIDGEVIEW – Willowbrook’s girls soccer team got off to such a strong start to the season that they even surprised their own coach a bit. The Warriors took fourth out of 32 teams at the Windy City Classic and earned a trip to Toyota Park for Saturday’s third place game against Fenwick. The Friars beat Willowbrook 2-0, but after winning the first three matches of the season and taking eventual champion Lincoln-Way North to overtime in the semifinal, the Warriors have a strong start to build on the rest of the season.

wick. The Friars, which were third in Class 2A last season, capped it off with a breakaway goal in the second half, despite Willowbrook having most of the possession while pressing for the equalizing goal. “Overall, the girls did very well,” Marquez said. “It’s just good preparation for the sea-
son more than anything.” Last year the Warriors showed improvement by going 4-2 in the West Suburban Gold and did so with six freshmen on the team. Four of those are starting this season as sophomores. “We have a young team,” Marquez said. “I didn’t expect this to happen that quick, but
now we need to maintain it and keep healthy more than anything.” The Warriors played their home opener Thursday against Bolingbrook and also have home nonconference games against Streamwood and Downers Grove North ahead of the conference opener at Hinsdale South on April 10. Make poetry into art Poetry has inspired people throughout history to make art, and it can inspire you, too. Here are a few ways you can turn your favorite poem into art. Fast-food joints are rolling out sandies with names such as Reel Big Fillet (Arby’s) and the Premium Alaskan (BK), which replaced the politically incorrect Whaler. KFC is fighting back with its Colonel’s Double Fillet monster. JIM HILLIBISH ! McDonald’s hopes to beat last year’s sales of 296 million Filet-O-Fish with cheese, says spokeswoman Dayna Proud. Some 30 percent happens during Lent. That’s nearly four times what they sell on a normal day. The fried fish balls, Fish McBites, help power the excitement. ! And then we have all those fish frys at nearly every Catholic church, consuming tons of frozen white fish. Those who eat in do their part. Seafood Business tracked Lent sales and found cod is the king with 60 percent more sales, followed by talapia at 32 percent and salmon at 30 percent. If you’re tired of all this fish noise, there are some Lent-conscious recipes that accomplish the task. Try some of these when you cannot look at another fried pollock.
LENTEN CASSEROLE • 1 pound fresh mushrooms, diced • 1 pound cauliflower florets • 1 pound broccoli florets • 1 large onion, minced • 1/2 cup carrots, diced • 1 stick butter • 3 T flour STOCK.XCHNGE • 1 cup chicken broth • 1/4 cup milk • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste • 1 cup mayonnaise • 1 1/2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese • 1 1/3 cups fresh bread crumbs Melt butter. Add vegetables and cook five minutes. Stir in flour, then broth. Remove from heat and stir in milk, then mayonnaise and salt and pepper, to taste. Butter a 9-by-13-inch baking pan and add vegetables. Spread cheese on top, then bread crumbs. Drizzle with butter. Bake covered at 350 F for 30 minutes. Remove lid and bake for another 30 minutes or until bubbly and crisp on top. Allow to stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serves 6.
PASTA TOSSED WITH PEPPERS • 16 ounces penne or twist pasta • 2 T olive oil • 1 green and 1 red bell pepper, seeded and sliced • 1 large onion, sliced • 1 clove garlic, diced • 1/4 t black pepper • Salt, to taste • 1 T balsamic vinegar • 1 T basil flakes Boil pasta as label directs. In a large sauce pot, heat olive oil and add peppers, onion, garlic, pepper and salt to taste. Cook until tender, about 10 minutes, stirring. Remove from heat and stir in balsamic vinegar and basil. Drain pasta, reserving 1/4 cup of the water and return pasta to saucepot. Add pepper mixture and pasta water and toss well. Serves 4.

GRILLED CHEESE PANINI • 10 1/2-inch slices Italian bread • 16 ounces Monterey Jack cheese slices • Butter, softened • 3 pears, cored and thinly sliced • Brown mustard Heat griddle or large skillet over medium-low heat, or a panini press. Assemble sandwiches with pears, two slices of cheese each and mustard. Butter bread on outside. Grill in a buttered skilled or press until cheese melts and bread is lightly browned. Turn and cook other side. Slices sandwiches on the diagonal and serve with sweet pickles. Serves 5.

The theme of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and National Nutrition Month this March is “Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.” As spring approaches and fitness routines move outdoors, remember that healthy snacks can fuel a workout and get you through the day. Becci Twombley, director of sports nutrition at the University of Southern California and ambassador for the American Pistachio Growers, suggests some snacking experiments: 1. Pick one proteinbased ingredient and think about different ways to eat it. Twombley often recommends pistachios as a performance snack because, calorie-for-calorie, pistachios pack more protein than most common snacks. As a snack ingredient, pistachios can be baked into homemade energy bars, sprinkled on yogurt or combined with dried fruit in a makeyour-own trail mix. 2. Work backwards. Think about your favorite snacks, and then experiment with different ways to add new proteins to that snack. Love the portability of sport bars, but not the lengthy ingredient list that can accompany some store-bought brands? Instead, make your own sport bars to control the ingredients in your own kitchen. 3. Get creative with the ultimate snack duo: protein and fiber. Rather than buying a traditional trail mix, make your own mix of pistachios and your favorite dried fruit. Mix pistachios with air popped popcorn for a satisfying and filling post-workout snack.
