Willowbrook qualifies for Science Olympiad state tourney The Willowbrook High School Science Olympiad team qualified for the state tournament April 12 at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. VILLA PARK – Walking down the runway in the Buckingham Ballroom at the Allerton Hotel in Chicago, Joe Dolecki remained calm and collected, despite the presence of seven judges critiquing his every move. “ T h e p r a c - Joe tice run made Dolecki me nervous, but after that, it was easier than I thought,” said Dolecki, 21, a Villa Park native and one of seven semifinalists in the Mario Tricoci Mario, Make Me a Model competition. Dolecki, a 2010 Willowbrook High School graduate and a welder by trade, entered the contest last month after being encouraged by his mother, Debbie. “My girlfriends have said for years that he could be a model,” she said, adding she saw a television commercial advertising the competition. This is the sixth year Mario Tricoci Hair Salons & Day Spas has offered the contest, which is open to men and women older than 16 years old who are not currently signed with a modeling agency. Since its inception in 2008, the contest has drawn more than 2,500 contestants and 26 finalists, nearly all of whom have secured contracts as working models. What began with roughly 400 candidates was whittled down to 41 following an interview process, Dolecki explained. From there, the remaining participants competed in a runway event March 13, where they performed before a judging panel. Seven semifinalists were chosen and are currently soliciting online votes that will count for a portion of each contestant’s score, along with

Dolecki works as a welder at both Hi-Speed Welding Inc. in Westmont and American Metal Installers & Fabricators in Villa Park. Roy Splingaire, owner of American Metal Installers & Fabricators, is Dolecki’s boss, but also a friend. “He’s a nice kid and I’m just trying to help him along,” Splingaire said, sitting next to Dolecki Monday afternoon in the shop. As a senior at Willowbrook and a captain on the Warriors’ wrestling team, Dolecki was encouraged to put together a modeling portfolio and agreed to have professional photos taken. But

from there, the portfolio sat dormant, Debbie said. “Joe didn’t know where to go with the portfolio, but now it’s come full circle,” she said. If it’s meant to be, it’s meant to be. If not, it was just a fun ride.” Dolecki has made friends

with several of the contestants, and said that it would be nice to make a career out of modeling if he were to go further in the competition. “I didn’t know I looked that good,” he joked. “It’s been a good experience and it gets me out of the shop.”

Chief Ronald Rakosnik said. The initial academy will limit registration to between 12 and 15 students and is only open to Villa Park residents, Rakosnik said. In the future, the academy will likely open to business owners and other members of the community, he said. Interested residents must complete an application and submit to a background check. All participants must sign a waiver prior to the start of the academy. The academy aims to give participants a better understanding of what the department does on a daily basis, Rakosnik said. “Sometimes people think we sit around and wait,” he said. “These guys are very active with daily training – anything could happen and we have to be prepared for pretty much anything.”

SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA An Evanston man serving a 14-year prison term for armed robberies in Cook County was sentenced Monday morning to 14 addi tional years in prison for Jason sticking up Logsdon businesses in Bensenville, Glen Ellyn and Lombard, according to a news release from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office. Jason Logsdon, 42, of 900 Chicago Ave., Evanston, pleaded guilty Monday to robbing four DuPage County businesses between late 2012 and early 2013, the release stated.

District 88 remains focused on students At District 88, we’re committed to being open and honest with our stakeholders to provide them with accurate information about the district. Two areas you might hear about are the finances/financial ratings of school districts and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers assessments.

Finances/financial ratings:

It is estimated 62 percent of VOICE school districts in Illinois Scott are now deficit-spending, Helton including affluent schools. That deficit spending has been caused by a challenging economy and the corresponding decline of district property values, or EAV, since 2008. This has led the financial rating of many school districts to decrease, but District 88 is listed at the second-highest financial level for the second year in a row, which is referred to as “Review.” Three questions we get asked frequently are, “Where is District 88’s year-to-date budget in terms of revenue and expenditures?” “Why is my property tax bill increasing when my property value is declining?” and “Why is District 88 in deficit-spending?” District 88 Chief Financial Officer Ed Hoster answers those questions at http://tinyurl.com/k4ns287. PARCC assessments: At District 88, preparing students for college and career is our focus and goal. Addison Trail and Willowbrook continue to implement the new, rigorous Common Core State Standards that have been adopted by Illinois and many states throughout the U.S. The Illinois State Board of Education also plans to change the state assessment program to match the new Common Core State Standards, and full implementation of those assessments is intended for the 2014-15 school year. Illinois’ current state assessment, the Prairie State Achievement Exam, involves a full ACT and the ACT WorkKeys test at grade 11. District 88 is in favor of including the ACT in the state assessment because of its value to students for college entry. Area superintendents and I drafted a position statement and recommendations that have been shared with State Superintendent Dr. Chris Koch, and we also have had discussions with State Rep. Kudos to Emmanuel Episcopal Church for sharing its space with those less fortunate who need a place to be sheltered at night. Concern over children walking to and from Cossitt School is hypocritical when there are at least a dozen restaurants within a block of the school serving alcohol during school hours. Comparing La Grange to the fictitious television show “Mayberry” is likely done by a person too young to have known the characters in the show. Barney Fife was a bumbling goof, Aunt Bee was a gossip and Gomer Pyle was a dim witted mechanic. It was Sheriff Taylor’s good will, politeness and kindness that kept all the other characters in order. Caring for those who are most likely mentally ill is a lesson in compassion that it seems the community of La Grange could use.

ELMHURST – A week after Elmhurst police responded to the possible overdose of Kelly Conner of Elmhurst, the department was investigating the death of a Chicago man who may have overdosed on heroin. Daniel Erickson, 54, of 4051 N. Kildare Ave., Chicago, was found unconscious March 21 at the Extended Stay America Hotel, 550 W. Grand Ave., according to a statement issued by Elmhurst Police Chief Michael Ruth. Police responded to a call at 10:37 p.m. When officers arrived, they learned Erickson had ingested heroin earlier in the evening and may have overdosed. Police did not see any signs of life and believed Erickson may have died a

short time before they arrived, according to the release. The investigation revealed two other people were in the room and had fallen asleep. When they awoke, they discovered the victim unresponsive and cold. Witnesses were taken to Elmhurst police headquarters and told police the victim had snorted heroin in the hotel room earlier that night, the release stated. Elmhurst police detectives responded to the scene, and police evidence technicians processed the hotel room. Erickson was taken to the DuPage Coroner’s Office for examination, and the case remains under active investigation by the Detective Section of the Elmhurst Police Department.

The centers opened about a decade ago out of a necessity to serve people with developmental disabilities close to where they live, Zoeller said. “We really try to serve people in their own communities so that when they’re out and about, they’re building relationships,” she said. The centers are multi-functional facilities used as hubs that focus on aiding people with community volunteering efforts, employment opportunities and health and wellness curriculum, Zoeller said. “We focus on personal growth and supporting people to really figure out what they want to do and where they see themselves professionally and as a person who wants to have a robust life.”

LOMBARD – Walking into one of the communal rooms last week at the new Main Street Community Learning Center, Kim Zoeller saw something that alleviated her concerns. The Ray Graham Association president and CEO knows transition can be challenging for an individual with developmental disabilities. What she saw was a man, who initially had reservations about the new space, sitting quietly in a bean bag chair. “He was totally relaxed because it wasn’t chaotic and it wasn’t noisy,” Zoeller said. “He was taking it all in and adapting. I think for people that have that need to be able to have some space to chill out and be alone for a moment, this is just going to be so much better.” The Ray Graham Association’s Main Street Community Learning Center officially opened March 21 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new space, located a few blocks north of the old facility, will be much more efficient for the staff and the roughly 80 individuals who come daily to use services, Zoeller said. “This space is beautiful and I think it is going to enhance the quality of our programming exponentially,” Zoeller said. The new space has seven more washrooms than the old facility, a kitchen and a washer and dryer – features not present in the old space. The center can now offer cooking classes and teach individuals how to wash and dry their own clothes, said Erica Wright, lead life skills instructor.

Despite a fifth consecutive year of declining home values, DuPage County residents will see an average increase of 4 percent on tax bills in 2014, according to a report from the office of County Clerk Gary King presented during a press conference Tuesday. The assessed value of county land dropped 5.4 percent in 2013 to about $32.8 billion from about $34.6 billion in 2012, the report said. At the same time, the average rate levied by taxing bodies across the county rose 9.36 percent. Chief Deputy Clerk Paul Hinds said this year’s numbers continue trends established by the 2009 recession. However, King said, it appears property values could be rebounding after an 8 percent decrease in 2012. “Hopefully the reduction in the value of property in DuPage is slowing down,” he said. “Within a year or two, we should be back going up, meaning that the downturn in the county the last five years is softening.” Of the 384 taxing districts in the county, 184 were eligible for the state-mandated tax cap. Every year, school and park districts, non-home rule municipalities and other taxing bodies can only increase their annual tax levy by the Consumer Price Index or five percent, whichever is lower. Of those, 152 were reduced to meet the tax cap for a total of $286.5 million. The CPI was 1.7 percent in 2013, down from 3 percent the previous year, meaning

mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – The scent of fresh chopped cilantro mixed with the smell of sweet mango in the Field Elementary School lunchroom, but pineapple mango salsa was not on the school’s lunch menu. Kendell Wright’s thirdgrade students were preparing their own fresh Mexican meal. “It’s reinforcing a lot of the things they’re already doing in school, but it’s related to a real-world experience,” said chef Laura Valcour, owner and instructor of Chefs for a Day in Willowbrook. Valcour chose to lead a lesson around Mexican food because Wright’s class had just finished a lesson on Mexico. She also incorporated math and fractions into the cooking demonstration by asking student to cut quesadillas in thirds and halves. When the Field Elementary School Parent Teacher Association raised more money than typical for this school year, the group decided to start the Let’s Get Cookin’!

Ty’s experience wasn’t unusual. Valcour has been leading cooking classes for students from kindergarten through high school for more than a decade. She finds many students aren’t aware of food origins. “A lot of the kids, they’ll know vanilla in a jar, but they won’t know where it comes from,” Valcour said. Valcour plans to teach every class in every grade at Field so all of the students get a chance to learn at least one recipe. After students earn their chef toques by preparing a fresh meal and sampling their work, Valcour sends them home with the recipe. “Now they’re going home to mom and dad with knowledge they can share,” Valcour said. Ella Przysclik said she planned to try out some of what she learned with her mom at home. Instead of telling students what they shouldn’t eat, Valcour focuses on giving them a fun experience with fresh foods that they’ll want to repeat at home. “I think if you ... give them the skills, every child tries,” Valcour said.

Clara’s Pasta keeps family traditions fresh WOODRIDGE – Walking into Clara’s Pasta, I was greeted by friendly smiles and a palette of rich, warm colors giving the large restaurant a cozy feel. While the long-running dining destination in Woodridge has built its reputation on fresh-made pasta and Italian cooking that’s been passed down for generations, it also has created a charmingly modern and inviting setting in its new location. Dark woods and clean lines make the space appealing for an intimate dinner or a night out with the whole family. My companion and I dropped by for an early dinner during the week, and were seated right away at a spacious booth. Our cheerful waiter brought over warm rolls to dip in olive oil infused with spices and Parmesan cheese. I had to remind myself to save room for the rest of the meal. Otherwise, I might have asked for another basket. While my companion finished an appetizer of toasted “Old World” bread topped with diced tomatoes, Fontinella cheese and pesto called Bruschetta di Roma, I started on a house salad with Italian dressing. It was simple, but tasty. For dinner, I ordered one of the house specialties, Cream of Chicken Pesto. Our waiter brought the large plate of sliced chicken, sun-dried tomatoes and roasted pine nuts sautéed in Clara’s fresh pesto sauce with a hint of cream. The richly flavored treat is served over fresh angel hair pasta. I didn’t know which tidbit to try first, but with a piece of chicken on my fork, I swirled up some pasta and took a bite. Heavenly. My companion was thrilled with all of the meatless options, and settled on the stuffed shells. He soon cleared his plate of the three large pasta shells filled with seasoned ricotta cheese topped with mozzarella and baked in homemade tomato sauce.

We were each happy with the pesto and tomato sauces we chose, but Clara’s also allows guests to choose from more than a dozen different homemade pastas and top them off with one of 12 sauces. On a second visit, I imagine the spicy arribiatta marinara made with crushed red peppers, Tabasco and chopped garlic may end up on my plate. The veal chop Parmigiana also sounded tantalizing.

Radiatori pasta and tomato sauce are served on the side. Throughout dinner, our waiter always made sure we

had a refill on our soft drinks before we had a chance to ask. We never needed to look for him, but he wasn’t a bother either. While I’m a pesto fan, and Clara’s Cream of Chicken Pesto surpassed my expectations, I already have a few dishes I’d like to taste next time. Even without the entree, I’d go back

seasoned oil. I’m sure I could have eaten the entire basket myself.

The two District 88 schools, Addison Trail and Willowbrook, had a number of standout athletes and accomplishments during the winter sports season, so before spring kicks into full gear, here’s a last look back at those winter successes, in no particular order.

1. Willowbrook girls basketball wins first conference title since 1996

After coming up one game short of sharing the West Suburban Gold title a year ago, Willowbrook girls basketball made no mistakes in the Gold this season. The Warriors went 12-0 in conference play to win the outright conference title for the first time since 1996. Willowbrook finished the season 23-5 after losing in a regional final. Senior Molly Krawczykowski led the team in scoring and was key to the team’s success. Fellow seniors Olivia Domin, Melissa Rader and Lauren Carroll were also main contributors. “This group of seniors is the winningest group of seniors in Willowbrook in 18 years,” Harrell said. “In their two years on varsity they’ve won 45 games.”

Here’s a look at what the area teams should look like in the season ahead.

Outlook: Three all-conference returners should lead the Blazers this season. Senior infielders Crystal Marinelli and Danielle Ciaglia and junior outfielder Ari Renc make up the core of a team hoping to improve on a 4-8 record in the West Suburban Gold. Juniors Kelly Delawder, Alex DiSilvio and Rachel Baumgartner and sophomore Carla Muell are also returning starters. “[We] return seven starters from last season, including all three all-conference players and the top three hitters in Marinelli, Renc and Ciaglia,” coach Mark Olson said. “We’re expecting strong seasons offensively and defensively from Delawder, DiSilvio, Muell and Baumgartner.” Despite all the returners, many of the key players on the team are still younger. I just want to give the girls the knowledge I’ve learned.”

Outlook: With five returning all-state players and nine returners in total, Montini looks to be a dangerous team in Class 3A this season. Two-time all-state pitcher Lauren Trojnar is back for her junior year in the circle. Hitters Sara Ross, Cristina Barrett, Alyssa Sclafani and Isabell Alexander also were all-state selections last year. Other returners include Morganne Evans and Emily Lezcano. Evans will move from right field, where she played the last two seasons, to third base. Coach Richie Costante expects the team to start just

two seniors and three juniors with the rest being sophomores. However, all of those players have at least a year of varsity experience. “This is the first year that we don’t have a freshman starting since I’ve been here,” Costante said. “That’s a good thing. Every girl that’s starting on the field has been on varsity since their freshman year. We still might be young in terms of sophomores and juniors, but they all have experience.” As for the seniors, Barrett is headed to play for Western Illinois. Ross is bound for IUPUI to continue her basketball career. Despite basketball being her priority and future focus, Ross still came out for one more year of softball, with some flexibility coming from the Montini coaching staff. Costante is putting an emphasis on the conference season. “We want to win conference, which we haven’t done in the past three years,” Costante said. “We have to get past the St. Francis jinx.”

Outlook: Armed with talented juniors Alyssa Ressinger and Sam Schmidt and a number of returners, Willowbrook is hoping for another strong season. The Warriors will have to replace Darian Pelsor, who was the team’s ace and a top hitter last year. However, her junior sister Delaney returns in the circle along with Montini transfer Zoe Dannenberg, who was on the Broncos’ varsity last year. Schmidt, a Northern Illinois commit, and Ressinger give the Warriors a pair of powerful bats in the middle of the lineup. The team doesn’t feature many seniors but still has plenty of experience from the younger returning players.

How are you feeling about the team’s hot start? It’s really exciting, especially coming out in the very beginning because we have a couple new players. It’s different playing with them and I have a new forward playing up top with me so it’s different, but I’m getting used to it.

What’s the transition been like becoming more of the team’s go-to forward? It’s more my responsibility to make sure we’re organized and to stay calm and not to make silly fouls up top to get us in trouble.

The Junior Warriors travel basketball team enjoyed a season full of successes this winter. The squad, comprised of eighth graders, went 15-4 in the Silver North division during the regular season in the DuPage Youth Travel Basketball League, then captured first place in the DYTBL Silver A tournament in Geneva on March 1 and 2. There will be NAYS tournaments at Elmhurst College from April 25 to 27 and at Romeoville High School from May 2 to 4. The two private high schools in Elmhurst, IC Catholic and Timothy Christian, each had standout athletes and accomplishments during the winter sports season. Before spring kicks into full gear, here’s a last look back at those winter successes for the Knights and Trojans, in no particular order.

3. IC boys snap regional jinx 1. IC girls basketball nearly matches volleyball, gets to state Following the lead of the girls volleyball team, the IC Catholic girls basketball went to state. The Knights won the first state trophy in program history by taking fourth place in Class 2A. Senior forward Rory Manion, who also starred for the volleyball team in its Class 2A state title, was key to the team’s success along with senior guard Grace Vitek. The Knights won all four sectional games by 19 points or more and then escaped with a 40-38 win over Seton Academy in the supersectional. “This has been our goal all season,” Vitek said of making state. “Me, Abby [Radoha] and Rory have played together since freshman year and we’ve been

2. VanderBrug dominates for Timothy boys Not many basketball players have the all-around game that Connor VanderBrug displayed this winter for Timothy Christian boys basketball. The Trojan senior is 6-foot6 and played all five positions on the floor at different times this season. He averaged 21.6 points, 8.7 rebounds and 2.1 blocks per game. Despite being

They knocked off Aurora Christian in the regional final, winning on the road, and went one game further to make a Class 2A sectional final. It was as far as any IC team has gone. The team went 23-7 on the season and won IC’s first regional since 2008. Sophomore Rhashaun Epting was the Suburban Christian Gold Player of the Year after averaging 19.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. “We were excited to win the regional and get the monkey off our back after losing the last two by two points each,” coach T.J. Tyrrell said.
