Villa Park firefighters support breast cancer awareness SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA VILLA PARK – For the fourth year in a row, Villa Park firefighters are joining firefighters across North America in sporting pink during October in an effort to fight breast and other cancers. According to a post on the village’s website, firefighters exposed to carcinogens and other chemicals while on the

job are disproportionately diagnosed with breast cancer – just one of many cancers linked to the work firefighters do. Villa Park firefighters encourage everyone in the community to participate in breast cancer awareness and prevention activities. Over the past year, Dawn Olmstead, wife of retired Lt. Robert “Bud” Olmstead, was

diagnosed with breast cancer. She has persevered and overcome her battle with cancer, the website stated. Villa Park firefighters will be selling T-shirts to bring awareness about those, like Dawn, fighting breast and other cancers. All proceeds from T-shirt sales will benefit Gilda’s Club Chicago in Dawn’s honor. Gilda’s Club Chicago is an

organization whose mission, according to the Villa Park website, is to provide free programs where men, women and children whose lives have been touched by cancer, as well as their families and friends, can feel they are part of a welcoming community of support. To order a T-shirt or show support, visit villaparkfirefighters.org.

TO THE OTHER 99 PUBLIC UNIVERSITIES: CONGRATS. We know what it takes to be named among theTop100 Public Universities by U.S.News & World Report. Being top-ranked is an honor reserved for those willing to work tirelessly, put students irst, invest in new learning environments and facilities, and attract the best faculty to lead stellar programs. Being in the top 100 is a lot of work and not something we take lightly. So to the other 99 who made the list with us, there’s one more thing we’d like to say: keep up the good work.

He’d much rather people admit they no longer want a bird and bring it to the shelter than begin to neglect it or sell it to someone without proper knowledge of how to care for it. “We’re not like a pet store,” said Alice Blayney, the club’s president, who also is co-chairs adoptions at the shelter with Federl. Blayney explained the shelter insists adopters meet the birds in person. Then, in most cases, the birds don’t leave

Instead, a home check is conducted to ensure potential adopters have been truthful about their home, other pets and knowledge of the type of bird they want to adopt. “Birds pick their owners,” Federl said. While pet stores are motivated to make a sale, Duffy said he and his counterparts want to find the birds good homes so they don’t end up back at the shelter or worse. “People give them to us on the basis that we will make judgment calls on where they will go,” Federl said, adding they do turn people down when

The shelter was started by members of the club in 1938 after they saw a need to take in cage birds who lost their homes. At first it was a foster program, where members would care for birds at their homes until they were adopted. Eventually the number of rescued birds grew so large, the shelter needed a larger location.

VILLA PARK – Rambo, a blue and gold macaw, sports a flash of emerald atop his head, bright golden cheeks and bold black-and-white markings around his eyes. But he’s plucked his entire body clean of feathers. “That’s the worst case we’ve had,” said Rick Duffy, a volunteer at the Greater Chicago Bird Rescue and Adoption in charge of nutrition and monitoring the birds for possible sickness. Duffy, who also is a board member of the Greater Chicago Cage Bird Club, explained when Rambo was brought to the Villa Park shelter a few months ago, his nails had grown completely around his toes so he could not perch. Instead he clutched onto the slim edge of his food bowl with the tips of his nails. Since Rambo arrived, he’s doing much better, but after repeatedly plucking his feathers out, a habit birds can develop when stressed or neglected (or sometimes other less clear reasons), his body will stay naked for the rest of his long life. “They have the same lifespan as people,” said Diana Federl, the club treasurer, explaining that large birds like macaws can live anywhere from 60 to 100 years, similar to humans. For this reason, some of the birds that end up at the shelter were well taken care of and beloved for many years, but their owners may have died or fallen ill in old age. Duffy said other birds are surrendered by pet owners who

Today the storefront at 204 S. Villa Ave. has been home to the shelter for a little more than a year. Federl estimates, the shelter takes in about 400 birds and adopts out almost as many each year. On average, she said, there are between 60 and 90 birds in the shelter at any given time. “We’ve got a very wide spectrum of birds,” Duffy said. In addition to large birds like macaws and cockatoos, the shelter is home to many smaller birds like cockatiels and tiny parakeets as well. Last year, the shelter took in more than 300 birds at once that were seized from an animal hoarder in Aurora. “There’s really a need to do this,” Federl said. In addition to a handful of core volunteers, Blayney said the nonprofit shelter relies completely on volunteers from inside and outside the club to help care for the dozens of birds. They have many children volunteers on the weekends, but the shelter is always in need of volunteers as well as monetary donations to cover facility and bird care costs. While the shelter is strict on adoption criteria, they invite everyone to visit the birds. They’ve hosted Boy Scout troops, day care groups and those with special needs. Volunteers at the shelter are always looking for more opportunities to share their love and knowledge of birds even with those who don’t have time to volunteer. “Everyone’s welcome to come in,” Federl said. “They’re welcome to just come and look.”

Well-behaved North changes with the times Let’s continue our tour through the schools of District 45 to see what has changed throughout the years. Again, life is different since District 45 opened its doors 157 years ago. There is certainly more to learning than the dittos and worksheets of the 1970s. Last time, our peek into the classroom focused on technology. Let’s travel now to the north side of town for COMMUNITY the first tour of one of our VOICE schools. North School serves Anthony J. about 500 students, pre-K through fifth grade. During Palmisano my recent visit, I had the opportunity to compare to years past. To my comfort, and probably yours as well, much is different, but at the same time much remains the same. So, what’s different from when we were in school? For one, the students at North School are extremely well-behaved. North School is recognized with Platinum Status by the state of Illinois for Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. There are only 28 schools out of 4,000 in Illinois that have earned this status. The staff at North School uses a three-tier system of strategies to encourage and reinforce good behavior. This is definitely a change. What this allows, however, is the ability to move from the traditional rows of desks in the classroom to classroom work stations. In this environment, students learn from each other in smaller groups as well as from the teacher. Most often, at least one station provides the opportunity for students to work with computers or even iPads. Students will not only read to themselves but also to each other. In addition, routines and systems are created to build a culture of independence where students problem solve on their own with guidance from the teacher. Fortunately, some things never change, such as the love and dedication of excellent teachers. When students are struggling, action is taken. Reading specialists provide extra help to students when needed. Teachers differentiate instruction for various styles of learning, and students celebrate personal achievement and success. I caught one teacher celebrating the success of a child who reached a whole new level of reading. Most heartwarming was when one of the teachers shared a personal story of her mother who passed away of cancer. Her purpose in sharing was to connect her experience with the experience of the main character of the novel the students were reading. As the teacher’s eyes welled up with tears, so did the students’, and … so did mine. This they will never forget, and this is what has always been Teaching Today for Tomorrow in District 45.

Mike Marchitto, 95, of Villa Park walks every weekday morning at the Iowa Community Center.

Need a little motivation to stay committed to an active lifestyle? Let 95-year-old Mike Marchitto of Villa Park take the lead. The World War II Navy veteran heads to the Iowa Community Center every weekday morning to walk around the facility for at least 30 minutes. He said “there’s a lot of old guys out there who should be walking.” It might be time to put on our walking shoes. A cyber attack on a national chain once again hit close to home recently. A hacker apparently gained access to customers’ credit and debit card information at a Jimmy John’s sandwich shop in Oakbrook Terrace. The breach occurred between July 23 and Aug. 1. Just another reminder that we must be vigilant about protecting our private information.

Responding to no A tip about compensation identification in Sound Off This is a response to the person who has an issue with tipping. A tip is not always “thank you for a good job.” In the U.S., we have a nice system where certain professions work either fully or primarily off of tips. When people work hard and do a good job, they are usually rewarded with higher compensation via the tip. On the other side, customers benefit because they either receive good service or they show their discontent via a low tip. Overall, it makes for better performing workers and more satisfied customers. Other cultures that do not use this system tend to be known for having poor service in restaurants and such because their mentality is “why work harder than the next guy if you all make the same?” The statement about not needing to

If you can’t commit to providing an animal with a lifetime of love and care, don’t get one! They are not dispensable. They have feelings and emotions and needs just like people. If you don’t like animals, leave them alone! If you do commit to the lifelong loving care of one, get it neutered or spayed. If you must find it a new home, try to find a new loving home before going to a shelter. If you can’t, then, and ONLY then, take it to a no-kill shelter. Do not let it fend for itself locked up, abandoned, or worse. There are millions of animals just waiting for another chance for a loving, forever home.

Elmhurst investigating whether car dealer violated agreement By MARI GRIGALIUNAS mgrigaliunas@shawmedia.com ELMHURST – An automobile dealership could owe Elmhurst more than $100,000 if it’s found the dealership defaulted on a sales tax incentive agreement. Lucky Motors, which sells pre-owned luxury cars, and Elmhurst entered into an agreement with the city in July 2010. According to the agreement, Lucky Motors was to have 50 percent of the sales tax it generated each year returned by the city annually for 10 years. The agreement caps annual payments at $50,000 and sets a total limit for the incentive at $500,000 during the 10 years. When the Internet automobile dealership considered opening in Elmhurst, the site it chose had been vacant for three years. Four years after the agreement was signed, the 27,000 square-foot Lucky Motors facility at 817 N. Church Road in Elmhurst appears closed. A Google search for the Elmhurst store lists the location as closed, and the Elmhurst Lucky Motors phone number is answered at the Villa Park location. “We’re operating out of our Villa Park store,” said Lucky Motors owner Chris Wright when asked about the Elmhurst location. He added that Lucky Motors still owns the Elmhurst building. Elmhurst City Attorney Don Storino said Thursday the city is still evaluating

• POLICE Continued from page 9

whether or not Lucky Motors is still in compliance with the agreement. Marilyn Gaston, Elmhurst director of finance and administration, said the city has paid Lucky Motors $144,635.16 to date. According to the agreement, if the dealership relocates its operations outside of Elmhurst within five years, it owes the city all of the money it’s been rebated. The provision is called a clawback. Storino said that in the past five years he has been in Elmhurst, none of the city’s sales tax incentive agreements that include a clawback have been defaulted on that he can remember. When asked if Lucky Motors had broken the Elmhurst sales tax incentive agreement, Wright said that was between him and the city. The Villa Park Lucky Motors, located at 225 West Roosevelt Road, entered into another sales tax incentive agreement with Villa Park in November 2013. Per the Villa Park agreement, the village rebates Lucky Motors 50 percent of the sales tax it generates each year for seven years, similar to the Elmhurst agreement. However, the Villa Park agreement does not establish a maximum payout per year or overall. For the three years following the 50 percent rebate, Villa Park will rebate 25 percent of the sales tax generated back to Lucky Motors.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process. (2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law. (3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings. (4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution. (5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing. (6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused. (7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused. (8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process. (9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction. (10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial. (11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice. (12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request. The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse. 2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing. 3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen. The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information. 2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction. 3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense. The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

FORM OF BALLOT Proposed Amendment to the 1970 Illinois Constitution Explanation of Amendment The proposed amendment makes changes to Section 8.1 of Article I of the Illinois Constitution, the Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights. The proposed amendment would expand certain rights already granted to crime victims in Illinois, and give crime victims the ability to enforce their rights in a court of law. You are asked to decide whether the proposed amendment should become part of the Illinois Constitution.

LOMBARD – It was just a few years ago when Sarah’s father disowned her for marrying a man of a different religion. This is just one of the many emotionally abusive incidents Sarah said she’s experienced with her father since childhood. To battle the anger built up inside from years of emotional and physical abuse, Sarah, who’s now happily married, became a client of the Adult Children Center in Lombard, which works with adults who grew up in abusive homes. “My father had a lot of anger so I had a lot of anger. For information about services offered at the Adult Children Center, call Dene Stamas at 630-495-2014. center gave me ideas on how to manage it and remedy it so it doesn’t get out of control,” said Sarah, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “Whenever I get that angry feeling in the pit of my stomach, I take a 15-minute walk and it releases all the energy I have.” The center is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, and owner and founder Dene Stamas, who counts Sarah’s story as one of many successes. Stamas said he originally established the center to help adults who grew up in an environment of alcohol addiction. “There was such a big need for help back then and there’s a huge need now,” Stamas said. “Alcohol and substance abuse isn’t going anywhere.” Stamas said he thinks the center’s longevity comes from the sensitivity provided to patients and the knowledge of what people who grew up in alcoholic families experience. “When they come in, they don’t feel lonely anymore. They finally feel understood,” Stamas said. “We treat it as educational learning tools. These are the things you need to learn so you can live a better and happy life.” Other services provided by the center – from family interventions to couples counseling to teaching parenting skills – didn’t come until 2009. Sarah, who has been going to the center since 2010, meets with Dene once a week for individual counseling. She said the counseling has allowed her to process the childhood abuse and learn that the abuse doesn’t have to affect how she lives her life now. “Before seeing Dene, I felt like I was stuck,” Sarah said. “He’s worked with me through difficult situations, getting out of unhealthy relationships and building that confidence.”

“When they come in, they don’t feel lonely anymore. They finally feel understood. We treat it as educational learning tools. These are the things you need to learn so you can live a better and happy life.” Dene Stamas Adult Children Center owner and founder

Stamas said Sarah has learned to set boundaries and limits with people where, previously, she was a people pleaser. “She used to walk around with anxiety, fear and confusion,” he said. “Now, she finds herself saying ‘no’ to people and is more focused on herself and her family. She’s enjoying life more and not worried about everyone else.” Sarah said there’s a chance she and her father could reconnect in the future, but she would only support a healthy relationship. “If you grew up in that environment, at that age you learn how to emotionally disconnect from the world,” Stamas said. “Part of recovery is learning how to reconnect and interpreting their thoughts and feelings.” There are 12 million alcoholics living in America and two out of three adults are adult children, according to Dene. Many of these people are educated lawyers and doctors. Stamas’ wife, Nancy, is a licensed professional counselor at the center. She said the center, which usually sees between 25 and 30 clients each week, helps families break that dysfunctional cycle of addiction and abuse. “The biggest thing is that they can interrupt the cycle. Either you’re going to repeat it or recover,” said Stamas. “The goals for our clients are to be happy and comfortable. It’s very rewarding to give them hope and help them change.”

(BPT) - There’s no better time than now to give your home the attention it deserves. Give it an annual checkup before cold weather arrives to help add comfort, save energy and cut home maintenance in the long-run. When inspecting your home’s windows and doors, here’s what to check: Inspect interior and exterior finishes: Over time, paint and stain can weather away. Flaking or peeling may mean that it’s time to refinish or replace the unit. When replacing windows or doors, consider factory prefinished wood or fiberglass options from Pella, or vinyl options that don’t need painting or staining, to save time and money. Look for damaged exterior surfaces or signs of leaks: Check your sprinkler system to make sure it’s watering your lawn and landscape, not soaking your windows or doors. Cracked or deteriorated wood may be a sign of water penetration. Leaks can linger and affect interior walls, floors or ceilings, so look closely for discoloration or other moisture signs. If you spot a problem, track its trail. For example, discolored trim around a window might actually be caused by moisture entering a ways away. With a leaky roof, water may run down inside the wall and appear at the window. Contact a professional for help in making home repairs. Clear windowsills and tracks of dirt and debris: Sand, leaves, insects or pine needles stuck in weather-stripping can affect the performance of your windows and doors. Open the windows and clean the opening with a soft brush, like a dry paint brush or vacuum attachment. Do the same for sliding patio doors. Try opening and closing: Open your windows and doors to make sure moving parts work, and units close properly. Replace worn or broken parts.

Inspect weather-stripping: Re-attach loose weather-stripping around windows or doors, and replace material that’s ripped or torn. Replace or repair broken locks: If locks feel loose or don’t work smoothly, replace them. Keep windows and doors locked when not in use. Locks help hold doors and windows tightly, to lock out rain, wind, snow and insects. Inspect weep and breather holes: Weep holes in the exterior of windows, allow excess moisture to escape, while breather holes allow air exchange within certain components. Clear blocked holes of dirt or debris with a wire or toothpick. Check exterior sealants and caulk on and around windows and doors. Pay attention to areas susceptible to rain, water and extreme sunlight. Remove damaged material and reapply sealant. In coastal locations, rinse exterior metal like exterior aluminum trim or cladding: Rinsing exterior metal parts three or four times a year can help extend the life of your windows and doors by minimizing corrosion from salt spray or fog. Feel for signs of air leakage around the window or door: Improperly installed windows or doors can be drafty, decrease energy efficiency, and allow unwanted moisture into your home. To help save on utility bills and keep your home more comfortable year-round, replace drafty old, leaky windows with new, ENERGY STAR-qualified Pella windows installed properly. Visit Pella Windows and Doors on Pinterest for design inspiration or Pella.com/news to connect with a Pella representative for tips on caring for your windows and doors, or choosing new replacements.

Weber Grill elevates backyard barbecue LOMBARD – As the season turns and separation anxieties mount at the thought of backyard grills decommissioned until spring, one restaurant always provides a comforting phalanx of professional Weber grills and charcoal at the ready. This year marks the silver anniversary of the Weber Grill restaurant, which originated in Wheeling and today has locations in Lombard, Schaumburg, Chicago and Indianapolis. The restaurants are owned by the Illinois-based grill manufacturer. We visited the Lombard location, a handsome space with a playful motif that pays homage to the early days of the dome-lidded Weber barbecue grill invented in 1952. There are vintage photos in the dining room, a chronological display of actual grills above the bar in the Smokey Joe’s lounge where myriad TV screens are tuned to sports, and a life-size sculpture in the foyer of the grill’s creator, George Stephen, cooking on his Weber in front of the open kitchen. Outside the restaurant is a towering giant of a kettle grill, its sheer size lending an amusing exclamation point. The dining room has an inviting clubby feel, with an exposed-beam ceiling, wagon wheel-style chandeliers above the tables, expansive leather banquettes and ultra-comfortable, upholstered booths. A stone fireplace and rich wood accent the space. We opted for a booth, and our helpful server soon delivered warm pretzel rolls with a tangy cheddar butter. Steaks, barbecue, burgers, grill-fired pizza and seafood dominate the menu, but I didn’t need to ponder all the choices. I had to try the signature pork ribs with hickory barbecue sauce, and they did not disappoint. The tender, fall-off-the-bone meat was flavorful, and the sauce hit just the right notes of zesty, smoky

Impossible to miss, the giant kettle outside the Weber Grill restaurant in Lombard could fit 300 burgers.

Thanks to the original between mouthfuls. flavor. I opted for sides of roasted garlic mashed potatoes and the blue cheese pecan cole slaw, both intensely flavored. I shared them in exchange for samples of the whipped sweet potatoes and bourbon baked beans my dining companion had chosen to complement his combo plate. I’m normally not a sweet potato fan, but the fluffy,

sweetened side dish was a standout – more dessert than dutiful vegetable. Served with our dishes was a thick slab of cornbread bursting with the just-picked flavor of high-summer sweetcorn with a hint of added sugar. My dinner date had chosen the two-item combo, picking the signature ribs along with the hardwood-slow-smoked pulled pork, which he praised

We were getting full, but couldn’t resist the seasonal creme brulee, whose flavor of the day was peach. We happily crunched through the crackling caramelized sugar atop the creamy custard. Splitting dessert does wonders to assuage the guilt of picking a rich confection. We paired dessert with a tasty cup of cappuccino prepared with Lavazza espresso coffee from Italy.

Warriors have winning touch Senior leadership a strong suit for Willowbrook volleyball team By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com VILLA PARK – Senior leadership is carrying Willowbrook girls volleyball to its strongest season in a number of years. The Warriors improved to 14-3 overall and 3-1 in the West Suburban Gold with a 25-17, 2426, 25-12 win against District 88 rival Addison Trail on Tuesday. Senior returners and leaders Kelsey Linnig, the team’s setter, and outside hitter Mia Railing are a big reason for the team’s success. “This is probably the strongest team I’ve had for probably four or five years,” Willowbrook coach Sue Bower said. “My senior setter has set varsity for four years. That’s part of it. She’s running the team very well. Mia, my No. 1 outside, this is her second year. She went from middle last year to outside. They’re playing a lot of club, too, which is definitely helping them get more reps.” Linnig had 13 assists in the win against the Blazers. Junior Danielle McNamara led Willowbrook with 13 kills. As a fouryear varsity setter, Linnig has seen the team progress in recent seasons. She said there is a different feel to the squad this fall with all the returning players. “The whole dynamic of the team this year is so different,” Linnig said. “We play much more cohesively and together. We’re a lot stronger of a team than we have been in the past.” Railing has been an impact player on the outside after playing as a middle hitter as a junior. Outside hitter is her more natural position so the transition wasn’t a problem. “I play outside for club so it wasn’t difficult, but it’s definitely different,” Railing said. “I feel comfortable as an outside because I can be loud and control the game or be a captain of the court.”

Linnig and Railing are two of the more vocal leaders on the team, but seniors Micala Giammarino and K.J. Wangler also have been key players. Giammarino is part of the Warriors’ two-setter offense. Junior libero Kelly Conley has led the team’s defensive effort. “The girls play very well together, a lot of communication,” Bower said. “Once in a while it does break down and that’s when we have our problems, but they just enjoy playing the game. Each football provides a chance for new players to shine on the gridiron. From seniors starring for the first time to players having an impact at the varsity level for the first time, these are the players from the area having breakout seasons.

Lucas Alexander School: York Position: Running back Year: Junior Impact: Both Lucas and Morgan Alexander have had dominant games in York’s running attack this season, but Morgan was already a known commodity on varsity last year. Lucas had five touchdowns and 190 yards in a Week 4 win against Willowbrook and has become a key player in the offense.

Josan Murphy School: Willowbrook Position: Running back/wide receiver Year: Junior Impact: Murphy has been a versatile asset for the Warriors’ offense. In the first three games of the season he was a key receiver, including in a 10-reception game against Lyons Township. When David Harris suffered an injury at running back, Murphy took over in the backfield and ran for over 200 yards against Morton.

Rams ready to bounce back against Bartlett By DAN SANTAROMITA LOMBARD – The real test of a team is not how it handles winning, but how it handles tough losses. Glenbard East was close to pulling off the biggest win for the program in years Sept. 26 against Waubonsie Valley. Willowbrook football suffers tough loss against Morton SUBURBAN LIFE MEDIA Willowbrook’s football team fell to 0-5 following a last-second loss against Morton on Saturday. The Mustangs ruined Willowbrook’s homecoming with a 17-16 win. Willowbrook was without starting quarterback Billy Degnan and starting running back David Harris but still led 16-7 in the fourth quarter. Rodolfo Villalon nailed a 37yard field goal with one second left to put Morton ahead. CHICAGO FOOTBALL.COM Hub Arkush

It’s all about the same in NFL It seems like for the past decade, or even two, we’ve been debating the quality of NFL teams. Has pro football become truly mediocre, with no more than two, three or four teams really worth getting excited about? Or is everybody just that good? Many of us spent the better part of May, June and July bemoaning the difficulty of the Bears early schedule this year, with six of the first nine games on the road and five of those against 2013 playoff teams. Nobody wanted to listen when I warned everyone to relax, and tried to remind Bears fans that the way things change overnight in today’s NFL, that schedule might look a lot different by the time the Bears actually get to play it. Here we are just four weeks into the 2014 season, and not one of those teams the Bears face over their first nine games is over .500. The San Francisco and

Carolina teams that were the second and fifth seeds in the NFC playoffs last year, and ranked third and second respectively in scoring defense, are both 2-2 and now rank 13th and 17th in points allowed. We feared the Jets and Falcons could be extremely difficult road trips and yet, through four weeks, New York is 1-3 and resides in the Bears win column, as do the 49ers, and the Falcons are 2-2, but currently ranked 31st in the NFL in total defense and 29th in points allowed. Miami was a popular AFC preseason wild card pick. The Dolphins started out on fire this year, upsetting the Patriots. But then they were embarrassingly bad, getting stoned in Buffalo and spanked at home by a Chiefs team that was 0-2 at the time. The Dolphins whacked the Raiders in London to get back

Don’t miss seeing ‘Chicago Football Now’ Watch Hub Arkush and the rest of our coverage team break down this weekend’s Bears game on “Chicago Football Now” at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on WCIU The U or at 2:30 p.m. Saturday on The U Too. to 2-2, but that’s the equivalent of beating up on the little sisters of the poor. Buffalo was viewed as a rare winnable game for the Bears in their opener at Soldier Field, yet they found a way to lose. Buffalo went on to beat the Dolphins in Week 2, but then fell apart against San Diego and Houston to drop them to 2-2. The Patriots still lurk at home for the Bears in Week 8. We suspect they’ll be pretty good by then, but all we know at the moment is they struggled to get by the Raiders in Week 3, and Oakland is almost certainly the worst team in the league. Finally, there are the Pack-

ers, who’d been atrocious on defense and struggled to run the ball before coming to Soldier Field and letting the Bears run up 496 yards of total offense on them. Yet, they still found a way to beat the Bears, and by three touchdowns. Is there a lesson in any of this? Only that the Bears are about six or seven plays over four games away from being 4-0, or 0-4. As of this writing, they were seemingly like everyone else – of course, 2-2. And one more thing. Through four games, we still really have no idea who the Bears are, or who their main competition is going to be as they fight for a spot in the playoffs. It appeared after four weeks that the Bears offense was capable of playing with the best in the NFL. Or are they? For all the plays the Bears seem to have made and all their trips up and down the field, they were just 19th in the league in total offense and 16th in points per game through four weeks. Can that get a team to the playoffs, particularly when it’s

22nd in defense and 22nd in points allowed per game? In today’s NFL it can, as long as the team makes a few big plays along the way, and as long as the bulk of its competition is as mediocre as the Bears are. The Bears should continue to get better on offense. Defense is the big question. As the Bears learned from the Packers in Week 4, shootouts are awfully hard to win and even harder to control. But if you can score points, it only takes a few plays a game on defense in this league to steal wins. The good news for the Bears through the first quarter of the season is that other than perhaps Seattle, there’s no one in the NFC who’s going to run away and hide from them. The final question is, can they be just a little bit better than the rest, because there’s still plenty of time left, and it doesn’t take much in the NFL today.
