He now eats on his own and just started walking this year, but his parents expect Aidan will need a heart transplant in the future and possibly braces or even a wheelchair as his muscles get weaker.

Abel doesn’t suffer from any mental delays, but Galan said he will most likely need surgery to place rods in his legs and a special walker before he can walk. Beyond the financial help Galan hopes to find through Cupid’s Kisses, she wants to spread awareness that Abel isn’t so different from other children.

“We feel like we have normal kids, but they’re just more fragile,” she said of parents who have children with OI. Clements said Miracles From Mia has helped children with cancer, physical handicaps and autism. In some instances, the nonprofit helps with utility bills or donating other goods. Clements remembers finding someone to donate a door to a family who needed a new one for their home.

Every family that’s been a Cupid’s Kisses recipient receives free tickets to the event each year because, Clements explained, the event is more than a fundraiser.

“What’s really neat is the families start talking to each other,” Clements said. “They learn something from each other.”

When Georgi and Frank Clement’s daughter Mia died at 17 months old, the couple wanted to help other parents with chronically ill children.

Miracles From Mia was born in 2006.

“I feel like when I do it, it honors my daughter,” said Georgi Clements, a Villa Park resident.

Mia was born with bilateral multicystic dysplastic kidney disease, which means neither of her kidneys functioned properly. Friends and family pooled their money to help pay for Mia’s necessary kidney transplant.

“We had really good insurance, but no insurance lasts forever,” she said.

The fund was originally called Miracles For Mia (note “for” instead of “from”), but Mia died before she received a kidney.

“Then we were left with money,” Georgi Clements said.

She said she didn’t feel right keeping it so she changed the name of the nonprofit, which has helped more than 20 children so far, she said.

The nonprofit’s biggest annual fundraiser is Cupid’s Kisses, conducted at the Diplomat West in Elmhurst where Clements said owner Tom Shubalis always makes an extra effort to help with the event.

Each year, 200 to 300 people buy tickets for the benefit.

This year, the benefit will support two families in the area.

Aidan Schwarz, a 3-year-old from Lombard, weighed just 4 pounds, 4 ounces when he was born premature at 36 weeks.

LOMBARD – A student-organized food competition will be hosted tonight at St. Pius X Parish School which will pit teams against each other in an effort to raise money for charities.

The inaugural Food Wars Challenge for Charity will run from 6:30 to 10 p.m. in the school’s Social Center. The event was inspired by Donald Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” and Food Network shows like “Chopped.”

“We wanted the kids to be more involved in charity work,” said Barbara Dawson, advancement director at St. Pius X. “They’re always asking to do bake sales and car washes, so we said ‘let’s challenge them.’”

The free event features 18 teams and more than 65 junior high students and recent graduates of the school, said Dawson, who described it as a “food fest for the community” similar to the Taste of Lombard.

In order to market themselves, the girls plan to have carnival-themed decorations, and will hold a lollipop raffle with the winning entry awarded a special prize.

“It was just really fun [to plan],” Gfesser said. “Usually we do little things to help, but now that we’re older, we have more responsibility and its exciting to be able to do something an adult would do.”

The products offered vary from team to team. The “St. Judes Judettes” will be selling homemade cookies, cupcakes, brownies, breads and muffins, along with soda and salads from Labriola Baking in Oak Brook. Labriola is a team sponsor, along with Lilac Bakery in Lombard, Mike’s Market in Villa Park and Cafe Laguardio in Chicago.

The team will support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Chicago.

Originally, the goal was to award the most profitable team with the total revenue, which would all be donated to the team’s support charity, Dawson said. However, the team captains will be polled prior to the event, and the new goal may involve dividing the funds to support multiple charities.

New sub shop supports firefighters

Firehouse Subs was started about 20 years ago in Jacksonville, Fla. by firefighting brothers Chris and Robin Sorensen.

There now are more than 700 location in the United States,

including 10 in the Chicago area and Northwest Indiana.

What makes the restaurant unique?

“Our big thing is we steam our meats and cheeses, that’s what sets us apart from other places,” Sparky Kuhn said.

Popular menu items include both the Hook & Ladder Sub, made with smoked turkey breast, Virginia honey ham and Monterey Jack; and the Smokehouse Beef and Cheddar Brisket, made with USDA choice beef brisket smoked for 16 hours, melted cheddar and special sauces.

The company runs the Fire-

house Subs Public Safety Foundation, a nonprofit that raises money and allocates funds for fire department grants. Customers are encouraged to “round up,” and the change goes into a box that is given to the foundation, Sparky Kuhn said.

The company also sells five-gallon pickle buckets, and $2 goes directly to the foundation.

“Departments can apply for a grant and they use it to purchase more advanced gear,” he said.

Moving forward, the Villa Park store plans to host fundraiser nights, where a portion of profits will support local organizations.

As the weather warms, Pam Kuhn hopes to attract customers – especially catering orders – from nearby business districts in Oak Brook, Lombard and Downers Grove.

For her, the customers are what she likes most about owning her own restaurants.

“I enjoy talking to people all day and serving them good food,” she said.

Suburban Life Media announced new leadership Tuesday as Laura Pass was named as general manager.

Pass most recently was the advertising director for the Kane County Chronicle and also previously served in that role for Suburban Life. In her Laura Pass new position, Pass will oversee all aspects of the operation, which maintains offices in Downers Grove and Grayslake.

Suburban Life, part of Dixon-based Shaw Media, publishes mysuburbanlife.com and 21 weekly newspapers in the Chicago suburbs, including the Villa Park Suburban Life.

8NEWS BRIEFS Subzero temps hit area, close schools VILLA PARK – Subzero temperatures and dangerous wind chills hit the Villa Park area Sunday night into Tuesday, forcing local schools and government buildings to close.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures hit a low of minus 11 early Tuesday morning, with wind chills as low as minus 30.

Locally, schools in districts 45 and 88 were closed. The cold also forced major delays along Metra lines.

The cold snap wasn’t quite as frigid as the polar vortex that descended on the western suburbs Jan. 6 to 7. That freeze brought temperatures as low as minus 15 and wind chills as low as minus 45.

AAUW offers scholarship to local women The Lombard-area branch of the American Association of University Women is currently accepting applications for its 2014-15 Return to Learning Scholarship.

The $2,200 scholarship will be awarded to a qualified woman completing an undergraduate or master’s degree, of a certified program. Doctoral degree candidates are not included.

The scholarship is offered as a community service and as an expression of the purpose of AAUW, which is to advance equality for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

Things you didn’t know about DuPagePads What’s your New Year’s resolution? At DuPagePads we are committed to our mission to end homelessness. Though, we have worked in the community for 28 years, many might not be aware of the seven facts listed below.

We have the comprehensive solution to end homelessness: The interim (overnight) housing sites are just one of the services we provide in our comprehensive solution to end homelessness. We also have a Client Service Center open weekdays, which provides basic needs, support groups and case COMMUNITY management; an employment VOICE program which partners Carol with 31 employers in the Simler community; and a permanent supportive housing program with 76 apartments throughout the county.

We serve our neighbors: Seventy one percent of the people we serve listed their last address in DuPage County.

We have seen a 44 percent increase in the number of children and 35 percent increase in families during the past two years: To accommodate these families, we provide a family outreach program for participants in temporary housing, staying with friends or in hotels. Case managers ensure these families stay linked to community resources and create a plan for permanent housing. Last year this program served 199 individuals; 64 percent are now in stable housing, including 44 adults and 84 children.

Our greatest need for volunteers is in the spring and summer: As the seasons change, our interim (overnight) housing sites change as well. With these shifts and volunteers’ vacations, we always need additional volunteers.

We have a new respite program: This short-term residential program allows individuals who are homeless to have the opportunity to rest after being discharged from a hospital, while providing access to medical care, support services and options for housing. The respite program has served 44 individuals and 45 percent are now in stable housing.

Our new online volunteer training launched this month: This training was made possible by a grant from the Spirit of Volunteerism Fund of The DuPage Community Foundation. Volunteers are able to access a web-based training on topics such as crisis intervention, risk management and volunteer responsibilities.

I totally agree with the person who commented on the snow-parking regulations in Brookfield. Monday-Wednesday-Friday and Tuesday-Thursday-Saturday regulations should remain in effect throughout the winter to avoid the confusion about snowfall amounts and days of the week. Many streets are narrow and those living on those streets take care to pull their mirrors in to avoid them being taken off by a passing car. We live on a wider street and two cars tried to pass and knocked the mirror off a visiting guest’s car. Do you think they stopped? People are very quick to judge the village for their poor job of cleaning the streets, but do they ever consider the residents who don’t move their cars properly?

I was so disappointed to see My Favorite Toy Store close in Downers Grove at the end of last year. Its name truly described our family’s feeling about the store! Michael Geisen was a one-of-a-kind owner, personally talking with my daughters when they were young, showing them the latest toy or game and letting them try it out. Energetic employees shared the owner’s philosophy of encouraging kids to have fun in his store. After My Favorite Toy Store came to Downers [Grove], I never visited the big-box stores again for toys, games or crafts. They just didn’t have that personal touch. We have fond memories walking downtown on summer afternoons and “playing” at the family-friendly toy store, it will be greatly missed!

ADDISON – Students from Addison Trail High School will perform in the winter musical, “Once on This Island,” next week.

“Once on This Island” tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. After Daniel is returned to his people, the four gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest to test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and death, according to a District 88 news release.

This will be the first time Addison Trail will perform “Once on This Island.” The musical is family friendly, and many people believe it’s based on Hans Christian Andersen’s original version of the classic fairy tale “The Little Mermaid,” stated the release.

Under the direction of Anna Jakubka Court, senior Morgan Pirtle plays Ti Moune and junior Jerold Macaya plays Daniel. The four gods of the island are played by seniors Francesco Bondi, Kala Keller, Anthony Pham and Nicole Levonyak.

“I tried it, and as soon as I felt that high from the heroin, it was like a void inside me was filled up,” he said. “Something that I was looking for my entire life, I found it in that little bag.”

Lewis shared his story at the first of two forums hosted by the DuPage Coalition Against Heroin on Thursday at the DuPage County Administration Building in Wheaton. The coalition, led by several county government entities, presented to both local educators and residents about the growing need for educating the community – especially children – about the dangers of heroin.

The effort was funded, in large part, by a recent county budget allocation of $100,000

Of the 206 pending drug possession cases in the county, 41 percent involve heroin, said State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. For comparison, in 2004, he said the county had less than five such cases.

To combat the problem, the coalition announced the launch of a new website, www.HeroinDuPage.org, and a social media campaign that presents a variety of infor-

mation, such as the dangers of heroin, the state’s Good Samaritan law, treatment facilities and resources for family and friends of addicts.

In addition, it offered educators tool kits with similar information, encouraging them to bring the knowledge back to their school districts.

“We want to make this a lot more public, shine a spotlight on it so people will know where to get help and start the healing process,” said Grant Eckhoff, a member of the DuPage County Board and the coalition.

County Coroner Richard Jorgensen said heroin is a problem all over the county and across all socioeconomic backgrounds.

The only solution to the epidemic, Jorgensen said, is to change the dialogue and inform people. He has experienced the deadly impact of the drug first hand, he said, particularly on the county’s younger population.

LOMBARD – A firefighter from York Center Fire Protection District was injured last week while battling a box alarm blaze at a duplex in Glen Ellyn, according to a news release from the Lombard Fire Department.

The injured firefighter was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, according to the release.

More than a dozen area fire departments responded to a call around 11:30 a.m. Jan. 24 at a two-story, multi-family building at 1180 Brighton Place in Glen Ellyn, the release said.

The call was placed by plumbers working inside the building.

Responding crews arrived to heavy smoke and fire coming from the roof of the building, according to the release. Glen Ellyn Police Deputy Chief William Holmer, who was on the scene, evacuated residents from the building.

The fire was quickly upgraded to a box alarm, which brought a response from neighboring departments, the release said, including Downers Grove, Elmhurst, Villa Park, Hinsdale, Westmont, Wheaton, Addison, Oakbrook Terrace and York Center.

The estimated damage is more than $100,000.

The fire appeared to have started where plumbers were working, the release said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

These people that use the sidewalks to get to where they’re going, they don’t have a car so they are walking on Cass Avenue and the cars are trying not to hit them. You can’t take a Bobcat or something and go down the sidewalk and clear a little bit of a path? I’m sure the village of Westmont will say the loss of home rule is to blame for that because that’s their common excuse for everything.

But it is absolutely shameful.

Chickens in Downers Grove?

It is amazing that the subject of serious debate at so many Village Council meetings in Downers Grove is the loosening of regulations that govern the raising of chickens in residential neighborhoods. Yes, I said chickens. One would think that daily life in the village is so perfect and free of all challenge that it must be time to fill up our days with the sounds of crowing roosters, waking us up before sunrise so that we can breath the noxious odor of chicken feces, as we succumb to bacterial and viral diseases the birds carry. What’s next? Goats and pigs?

Common Core State Standards A Statement by the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) Catholic schools have a long-standing commitment to academic excellence that is rooted in the faith- based mission of Catholic education. The Common Core State Standards in no way compromise the Catholic identity or educational program of a Catholic school.

The Common Core State Standards initiative, begun in 2007, is a state-led, bipartisan effort that is not a requirement for participation in the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) or any other federally- funded program, and there are no mandates for any Catholic school to follow any federal rules if they adopt the Common Core.

Adoption of the Common Core is voluntary; individual states, Catholic dioceses and other private schools make their own decisions about whether to adopt the standards.

The Common Core State Standards are a set of high-quality academic expectations that all students should master by the end of each grade level. The standards establish consistent learning goals for all students that focus on preparing them to succeed in college and careers in a globally competitive workplace. The standards define and clearly communicate grade-specific goals and inform parents about learning outcomes, making it easier for parents to collaborate with teachers in helping their children achieve success.

The Common Core State Standards are not a curriculum. A curriculum includes what is taught, when it is taught, how it is taught and what materials to use. None of these items are included in the Common Core State Standards. For Catholic schools, all of these elements will continue to be determined by diocesan superintendents, principals and teachers working to meet the needs of their students.

The Common Core represents a fundamental shift in the teaching and learning process. The Common Core establishes clear, measurable goals for students that assist teachers in making instructional decisions. The standards place emphasis on creativity, critical and analytical thinking and application to curriculum content. The Common Core is not a national curriculum. It guides the way that instruction takes place in each classroom, allowing the Catholic school to develop its own curriculum content.

An excellent Catholic school provides a rigorous academic curriculum that integrates faith and knowledge. As trained professionals, Catholic school administrators and teachers continually seek the best instructional methods for educating students. In the past, dioceses and schools have developed their own standards or adapted state standards for use with their own curriculum. Some will continue to do this.

To assist those incorporating the new standards, the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and partners in Catholic education established the Common Core Catholic Identity Initiative (CCCII). CCCII provides resources to design and direct the implementation of Common Core within the culture and context of a Catholic school curriculum. Bakersfield gives fresh spin to American fare WESTMONT – With its open floor plan and California-style setting, Bakersfield gives west suburban diners a fresh experience, and some good food, too.

The restaurant pairs its modern, airy atmosphere with a made-from-scratch menu that’s mostly American with accents from a number of cuisines. Bakersfield touts its homemade fare featuring fresh ingredients picked from just across Ogden Avenue at its sister store Standard Market, an upscale grocery that chose Westmont for its first location in 2011.

A companion and I visited Bakersfield on a recent weeknight, a chilly evening that made complimentary valet service quite beneficial.

As we entered the restaurant, our eyes immediately went to the far side, where diners can see a half-dozen or so chefs busy preparing the night’s dishes. The lack of a wall gives a peek into the preparation involved, especially appealing to foodies.

The open setting continues throughout the restaurant, with a three-sided bar on one end and an elevated seating area on the opposite, although diners get an intimate experience with raised booths that are just tall enough.

For starters, my date and I kicked off our meal with the Housemade Guacamole, a generous portion with chips and a side of salsa. Our server even offered refills.

The guacamole was creamy and fresh, and the salsa had a nice hint of chipotle. If you’re a fan of Mexican cuisine, definitely give it a try. Other appetizer selections at Bakersfield include Pot Roast Sliders, Crispy Thai Shrimp and Blue Crab Dip. For her main course, my date, at first indecisive, opted for the pan-roasted Chilean Sea Bass. She loved the dish, and said it was just the right amount.

Taylor White’s late bucket lifts Blazers to narrow win against Morton

By DAN SANTAROMITA dsantaromita@shawmedia.com ADDISON – Addison Trail’s boys basketball team has had several close losses this season.

Taylor White played the role of hero for the Blazers in a narrow victory against Morton Jan. 24.

After James Pupillo missed a shot with about 12 seconds left and Morton grabbed the rebound, the junior picked off a pass and went the other way for a layup with 6.4 seconds left to give the Blazers a 61-59 lead that stuck for the win in a West Suburban Gold game.

“It feels really nice to be on the other side of a close game,” White said.

Close games have had a tendency to go against AT so far, and it has lost four games at the buzzer this season. White’s heroics helped the Blazers experience what life is like at the other end of the spectrum.

The decisive play was chaotic with the Blazers initially turned away on a shot moments before White came to the rescue with his steal.

“We wanted to hold the ball, but when I saw that they got it I figured who they would want to get the ball to [Weisner Perez],” White said of the crucial steal. “I saw him and I just went for it.”

Morton’s Greg Carter drove the length of the floor for a potential tying layup, but the ball rimmed out and the Mustangs couldn’t get another shot off.

“We’ve had a lot of those go against us this year and to see that ball rim out at the end was as big of a relief as we’ve had,” AT coach Brendan Lyons said.

Morton led by as many as 13 points in the first half and 11 in the third quarter, but every time the Mustangs extended the lead the Blazers fought back. AT took its first lead of the game with 3:09 left in the game on a Ronald Duling bas-

Riding high after the win over Morton, AT had an easier time the next day as it defeated District 88 rival Willowbrook 77-57. With the win over the Warriors, the Blazers improved to 9-11 overall and 4-2 in the Gold.

“We’re definitely playing better,” Lyons said. “We’re believing and we’re not getting rattled when things aren’t going our way. Obviously guys have to make shots and guys have to make plays, but when you have six, seven seniors who have had a lot of experience, you expect that.”

What does the Morton win mean for your season?

Yeah, it’s probably one of my better games of the year.

I made a couple mistakes, a couple turnovers I’d like to take back, but I like the result that we got.

It’s happened so many times. We drill it all the time in practice situations like this.

With the Denver Broncos and quarterback Peyton Manning set to play in the Super Bowl on Sunday, few people can offer the perspective of Ryan Diem. A former teammate of Manning, the Glenbard North graduate played 11 seasons in the NFL as a member of the Indianapolis Colts before retiring in 2011.

Still living in Indianapolis with his family, the former offensive lineman is now involved with a couple of different businesses, primarily a software company called CloudOne. Diem and his family return to the Chicago area every year for the Ryan Diem’s Allie & Friends Golf Classic. In nine years, the event has raised more than $1 million for neuroblastoma cancer research.

For starters, you’ve got the two best teams in the NFL without question as this is just the second time in the past 20 seasons that both the NFC’s and AFC’s top seeds have advanced to the playoffs.

Perhaps more impressive, this is just the fifth Super Bowl in history and the first since the New York Giants played the Buffalo Bills following the 1990 season that the NFL’s top scoring team, Denver with 606 points has faced the leagues number one scoring defense, Seattle with 231 points allowed.

Wilson has won 27 games as a starting quarterback in the NFL, including three playoff games and is trying to join Kurt Warner and Ben Roethlisberger as the only quarterbacks in history to win a Super Bowl in his first or second season.

Upon arriving in New Jersey Manning said of Wilson, “I met Russell Wilson, believe it or not, when I was visiting the Broncos. I believe it was after I signed with the Broncos. They were having players come in for visits before the draft. I was actually in the film room watching some tape, and someone brought Russell in. I had a chance to shake his hand. I wished him luck and told him I enjoyed watching his college career.”

Wilson knows he had a brush with greatness and seems to understand his place in the QB matchup.

“They have an unbelievable quarterback in Peyton Manning. I have so much respect for him and what he’s done over his entire career. He deserves all of the credit. He’s an unbelievable quarterback and human being.

Garoppolo said after the first practice that in terms of areas of improvement, coaches wanted him to work on his footwork, since he was “fairly new” to the 3-, 5- and 7-step drops.

“It’s a repetition thing,” he said.

“Once you start doing it so much, you get used to it.”

Fisch acknowledged that it’s tough to work on a technique in only one week, but he seemed impressed with Garoppolo’s footwork.

“I think his footwork’s been pretty good,” he said. “I think he’s done a nice job, throws with a nice face with good feet so it’s pretty neat to see.”

Garoppolo knows that while he may have the moxie that coaches want in a quarterback, he needs to show he has the physical tools as well.

“If you’re a leader, they’ll know you’re a leader by how you act on the field,” he said about the balancing act.

“If you can throw the ball, they’ll know that by the end of the day. You’ve just got to come out here, be yourself and compete.”

A Bears fan, Garoppolo said Jay Cutler is his favorite Chicago quarterback. The two might differ in personality, but Cutler has plenty of confidence, something Garoppolo said he knows he needs to show during the draft process, and he can gain that more with his arm than his words.

“If you belong, you belong. If you don’t, you’re going to stick out and people are going to know that you don’t belong,” he said.

As the days went by in Mobile, Fisch saw a trend. Maybe Garoppolo read the articles about his rising draft stock, but more likely, he saw what he was capable of against top competition.

“Each day, I have noticed a trend in a way, that his confidence has continued to improve and therefore his charisma has showed up,” Fisch said. “He has a nice presence about himself.”

MOBILE, Ala. – Regardless of what the unknown team sought when asking Jimmy Garoppolo, “Name as many things as you can do with a brick in a minute,” the personnel folks probably were impressed with how the Eastern Illinois quarterback handled his interview.

“All the questions have a purpose behind them,” Garoppolo said at the Senior Bowl, laughing about the odd question he received. “Sometimes you don’t know what they are; you’ve just got to answer truthfully, really.”

A linebacker until his junior year at Rolling Meadows High School, Garoppolo didn’t receive a single Division I offer. Four years later, his performance at the East-West Shrine game last week earned him a last-minute invitation to the Senior Bowl – a long journey that continues to be positive for Garoppolo.

“Last week helped me out,” he said

when asked about dealing with the stigma of being an Football Championship Subdivision quarterback playing with the big boys. “You guys talk about it, scouts Jimmy talk about it, but I’m done with that. … We’re Garoppolo all on the same playing field, same playing level.”

“I think it’s a pretty neat deal,” said Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, who worked extensively with the quarterbacks on the South team.

“The opportunity to have an Auburn pass rusher lined up and a Florida state pass rasher, a Georgia corner, now all of a sudden he’s playing with a different group two weeks in a row and two different offenses in a row. I think it’s pretty cool to watch his development.”
