A Polo man was found deceased Sunday, Oct. 20 following a fire at his residence.

Daniel Marth, 63, was found deceased after the Polo Fire Department and Polo Police Department responded to the fire at 508 N. Adams Avenue on Sunday afternoon.

Police and fire were called to the structure fire at 1:30 p.m., Polo Police Chief Jon Mandrell said in a press release on Monday.

“Upon arrival, officers and fire fighters found the lower level of the residence to be engulfed,” Mandrell said Marth’s autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday with the Ogle County Coroner’s Office.

Multiple fire departments assisted at the scene and the case remains under investigation by Illinois State Fire Marshal.

Village of Progress marks 50th annniversary

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI Lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com The Village of Progress awards banquet may come once a year, but its winners spend every day giving their best.

This is the Village’s 50th year of serving adults with developmental disabilities, and Wednesday’s moderator, Tom Wadsworth, kept the mood uplifting – which was easy, given the love and support filling the room.

Most of the awards recognized VOP consumers who’ve made a difference in their peers’ lives or whose skills have risen above and beyond.

But the ceremony wouldn’t be complete without recognizing those who’ve helped ensure the Village continues to thrive.

The Robert Stouffer Special Recognition award traditionally goes to a person or business that has donated time, money or gifts. This year, two donors were recognized.

Crest Foods in Ashton, owned by the Meiners family, stepped up when

Serenity Hospice & Home approached the Village with a clothes-baling operation. The Meiners enthusiastically donated money for a commercial bailing machine, Wadsworth said.

They didn’t stop there: The Meiners wanted to know how else they could help the Village, and now, thanks to a grant from the family, a wing of the facility is being renovated, getting a new handicap-accessible restroom, new flooring and a handicap-accessible desk.

The work is on track to be completed this winter.

Jeff Meiners said there are days when he drives home wondering if he’s done anything to make a difference.

That’s not the case for those who work at the Village, he said.

“I will say that the people from Village of Progress can drive home every single night and say ‘We made a different in somebody’s life’ – and what’s better than that?”

Also recognized was the Village’s second director, Craig Carpenter, now retired.

Carpenter came to VOP in 1973 as a direct care worker, Wadsworth said.

When founding director Bob Glaser retired at the end of 2007, Carpenter took the helm after years of developing and overseeing a variety of entrepreneurial ventures.

He couldn’t have come at a better time – Carpenter’s “fiscally conservative” mindset helped the Village navigate the 2008 recession, Wadsworth said.

He not only kept the Village afloat during hard times, but when he retired in 2014, he also left the cash reserves at historic highs.

“It was because of Craig’s leadership that the Village was later able to modernize its facilities and ultimately create the Village Bakery, which has now entered its third year of operation,” Wadsworth said.

The Village is a community effort, Carpenter said, congratulating everyone in the room for their contribution to keeping the organization in the commu-

nity for 50 years.

As he looked to the audience, he noted the faces of those who have been there since the beginning 50 years ago, and remembered the faces of those who since have been lost.

“Let’s think for a moment, of all the people who can’t be with us to join the celebration. So many people over the years – the parents, the consumers, staff and board members who would have loved to join us tonight.

“In fact, I think they are with us tonight in our 50th year birthday party.”

Volunteers such as Frank Swingel, winner of the Jane Etnyre Volunteer of the Year award, donate many hours of their time to the Village and its mission.

Swingel, a retired Mt. Morris teacher and coach, began volunteering his time as a driver in 2007.

When another volunteer in charge of 23 people moved away in 2017, Swingel stepped in so classes so

Polo’s First Annual Christmas Festival will be Saturday, Dec. 7 with many activities concentrated in the business district. The Vendor and Crafter Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall at the corner of Mason and Franklin. Spaces are available for $20.

He’s known for being a jokester, and when Wadsworth asked him his grandparents’ name, Oltmanns stated the obvious.

“Grandpa and Grandma,” he said.

Virginia Saldana, recipient of the Robert Moehle Personal Achievement Award, was recognized for her persistence and “willingness to succeed” in spite of obstacles, Wadsworth said.

Saldana, who joined the Village in 2012, took to the stage like a star and gave Wadsworth a subtle hint to give her a kiss on the cheek after receiving her plaque.

Judge won’t lower bond for Duane Meyer Man is charged with murdering his ex-wife and 3-year-old son

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com OREGON – The Byron man charged with killing his 3-year-old son and ex-wife will remain in Ogle County Jail on $10 million bond, a judge decided on Oct. 16.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive on Oct. 19, 2016, and her 3-year-old son, Amos, was pronounced dead a short time later at a Rockford hospital.

Duane “D.C.” Meyer, 37, of Byron, was arrested last week and indicted by an Ogle County grand jury on four counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death.

At the time of his arrest, he also had a loaded firearm and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon.

Rockford attorney Christopher A. DeRango, representing Meyer, requested Meyer’s bond be reduced to $100,000, of which he would need to post 10 percent, arguing that Meyer is a lifelong resident of the area with family ties, that he would not pose a danger to the community or be a flight risk, and that the evidence against him is circumstantial.

The sentence of life in prison if convicted also was a crucial factor, he said.

“That factor alone strongly mitigates that his bond remain the same,” Morrow said.

Judge John “Ben” Roe denied the bond reduction.

Meyer’s next hearing is Nov. 18.

According to the investigation: It was Meyer who reported the fire, around 6:40 a.m. that day. He told officials he was there to pick up his son. The couple had divorced

about a month earlier.; Ogle County Court records show she filed for the dissolution in November 2014 and the divorce was granted Sept.

8, 2016.

When firefighters arrived, smoke alarms were sounding, the house was filled with heavy smoke, and Meyer and a Byron police officer were on the lawn performing CPR on Amos, who had been in an upstairs bedroom.

Amos and his father were taken to then-Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead. An autopsy showed he died of smoke inhalation.

Authorities have declined to reveal the cause of Maggie Meyer’s death, although they said patholo-

gists have determined it. They also have not said how the fire started.

A representative from the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was an arson while he was at the scene.

Maggie, the daughter of Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris, was a teacher at the Chana Educational Center.

A Candlelight Vigil in memory of Maggie and Amos was held on Oct. 19 in Oregon.

Focus House director tells board about changes Mason addresses county board at Oct. 15 meeting held at Focus House

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com Focus House director Brenda Mason told Ogle County Board members last week that the county-owned youth shel-

ter-care facility is in the middle of changes.

In 2018, Judge Dan Fish, Chief Judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit, ordered a closure to the youth facility’s residential program after the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts conducted an operations review.

Since then, two residential houses have begun to operate on the campus.

The programs offered have also expanded and now include an out-patient services for youths on probation, and the outpa-

tient programming has begun to drift into DeKalb and Lee counties, Mason said.

DeKalb County has shown an interest in Focus House’s out-patient and mental health programming, she said. Lee County has also begun to use the facility “residentially, which hasn’t happened in my four years.”

“We’re starting to see some growth and different recognition in the program, and I’m just thankful for all of your continued support,” Mason said.

Second, be on guard for anyone sending money to you in any form that then involves you sending some back to them.

This is completely unnecessary on their part if you take a step back and consider it. This usually involves phony money orders or fake checks being sent to you, which later bounce.

Also, it’s highly unlikely that royalty, such as a prince or a king in a foreign country are truly seeking you out to give you a lavish gift, regardless of what you stand to gain.

These high-ranking officials do not need our help to make a banking transaction. Many of these exchanges usually happen through e-mail.

Our advice? Simply click delete and block the contact. If you want to go one step further, forward it

to me at jmandrell@poloil.org. I will gladly review it just so we can learn more about the scam.

Last, “Is this too good to be true?”

That old addage may be your guiding light. Just about every scam can be thwarted by asking yourself this.

If for some reason you think it could be a viable venture, then do some research. This research can include our police department, who can assist you with assessing the interests of the person contacting you, as well as confirming that, in fact, the entire plan is a hoax.

In summary, be on guard and think things through when engaged by a potential scammer.

Don’t give out any personal information and be mindful of those seeking to create panic or excitement through various requests or demands.

In just seconds, you can easily research a scamand assess if you are being targeted as a victim.

‘Tis the season. Christmas and New Year’s already, you might ask?

Yes, while we are on the downward stretch of 2019 and will soon approach the excitement of the holiday season, it also is becoming peak scam season.

While these frustrating attempts happen to many of us year-round, be on guard this holiday season.

Scams are nothing new. The game is the same, but the tools and technology are changing.

Unfortunately, this past week, our department took reports from three victims. So, how can you prevent yourself from falling prey to a scam?

Just a few simple proactive steps on your part can help save you the grief and potential loss.

First, scammers often pretend to be someone you trust or make to reference someone you trust.

Take a step back when receiving phone calls, e-mails, or texts from

someone identifying themselves as a utility company, government official, or someone saying they are calling about a loved one that is troubled.

Often times, these imposters Polo Police Chief Jon Mandrell are meant to incite panic and will do so by telling you your power might be turned off, your social security number is being suspended, or a loved one is in the hospital and needs money for urgent care.

In these circumstances, trust your gut and tell the individual you need to look more into this. This will give you the time to determine that this is likely a scam and that the phone number the individual is calling from no longer is even working when you call it back.

Often times, a simple Google search will tell you this is a scam.

Big air show was held in Polo in August 1946

BY BETTY OBENDORF CURATOR Polo Historical Society It was August of 1946 and Polo was gearing up for a community air show and dedication of the Hamilton Airport. This airport was the only farm airport in northern Illinois.

The Polo Community Air Show was under the sponsorship of the Patrick Fegan Post of the American Legion. All proceeds were going to go to the building fund of the American Legion.

Other things going on in Polo in that Aug. 29th Tri-County Press was a farewell party for the Rev. Clingenpeel family, the making of 5,000 dozen dresses by the Garment Factory, and Coach Bob Breckenridge issuing equipment to the Marco football squad at the high school.

Then just in time for the big air show came the Flying Fortress bomber piloted by Lester “Bud”

Weaver, Paul Webster, and Harold Ditzler from Altus, Oklahoma.

The big 30-ton bomber flew over Polo for about 10 or 15 minutes in order to give Polo people a chance to head for the airport. 200 were there to see it land.

You can just imagine all the cars heading in that direction to see the landing of theB-17 that was purchased from the War Surplus Administration by the Polo Boy Scouts.

Arch Hamilton announced the giant bomber would be parked on the air field for all to see.

The air show prizes were going to women as well as men pilots with 12 pair of nylons to be given away at the air show coming up. The first pair would go to the first woman to land her plane.

Wouldn’t that have made you want to go out and get a plane immediately?

Five thousand people showed

up for the Sunday afternoon show which set a record for Northern Illinois.

I wondered if any of my family was there since I have no recollection of it. Then I read where my father, O. Glenn Isley, announced all the events.

The high light of the show was a special parachute jump by a man from St. Louis. Laverne Livingston gave a bit of comedy when he drove onto the field in a horse and buggy dressed as a farmer.

At one point he jumped from his buggy, ran to a plane, and took off.

There were other aerial contests such as a bomb dropping contest.

Grant Burman read telegrams congratulating Polo on the new airport which included one from the Governor of Illinois, Dwight Green.

Cecile Hamilton was unable to be there but sent a telegram thanking people for all their help. She was by that time assistant aviation editor of

the New York Herald Tribune.

They had not anticipated the crowd that would show up and by four o’clock in the afternoon they ran out of food and pop.

The lines in the pictures show how people really turned out to see the show and I am certain the B-17 drew many there to see what had managed to land in a field near Polo.

The B-17 was to be open every Sunday for the public and people could look the plane over as they went through it.

Eventually people ended up taking pieces of the plane for souvenirs and the boy scouts got tired of leading tours.

The plane was sold to Mr. Hamilton which ended the involvement of the boy scouts and the day came when the plane sailed away to do other things.

Now it is to be put back together again and restored so people can gather and once more look it over.

Oct. 16 A 17 year old male juvenile, Polo, was cited for speeding 50 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. He was released on an I-bond.

On another trip the Hopkins family brought granddaughter, Abigail Hopkins, to visit an aquarium. Abigail is studying at Arizona State University in Tempe. Everyone enjoyed the mini-reunion.

James was recruited for a home project by his daughter, Amy. Together, they assembled a small utility storage shed. With several day’s work in the project, Amy now has access to some much needed storage.

Nancy, along with her daughters and granddaughters, spent time shopping. Dave Klein prepared several family meals while the family visited. James and Nancy enjoyed the sights on their travels, including seeing the sights of the beautiful Red Rocks of New Mexico.

We are glad to have James and Nancy back with us and they are glad to see the green grass and changing leaves of fall in Illinois.

This past Tuesday evening, our PEO Chapter DW held their regular meeting at the Church of the

Brethren. From Pine Creek, Beverly Coffman, Lisa Coffman, Maggie Henning, and Jean Cunningham attended the meeting.

On Friday evening, our church crew led by Charlotte Hoppe, fed the football team after their win on their last home game. Our church family is glad to share a meal with the students of the Polo High School.

My late blooming tree is nearly ready to display its gown of gold. The brightly colored leaves are a beautiful source of light on the cloudy days of fall. The yellow, red, and orange leaves only last a short time, but they make quite a statement.

God’s love makes the same statement in our life, however, it lasts so much longer. His love and His light will stay with us through the darkest days. When we share His love, we are that brightness for all of those we meet.

I hope to see you next week in our church in the country. Our church family is ready to welcome your family for a time of praise and worship.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Larry and Judy Riffle.

Deb Ohlwine shared her memories of our church in our ongoing celebration of the building. Deb interviewed several past church members and shared their thoughts on

Oct. 17 their childhood Sunday School days.

Our special music was the hymn, “Precious Memories” performed by Chuck Kearns, singing on playing guitar, Bev Kearns on piano, and Larry Riffle on harmonica. Once again, we welcomed several visitors to our church.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young group, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper.

Their story time is also accompanied by a candy treat and coloring page. After church, everyone gathered for a hot meal and the quarterly business meeting.

James and Nancy Hopkins have returned from a three week trip to Chandler and Queen Creek cities in Arizona. While there, they visited their daughters, Amy Hopkins and Edie Klein, her husband, Dave, and daughter, Hanna.

In Arizona, James and Nancy, along with family members, drove to Williams to visit a wild animal preserve called Bearizona. On the drive through the park, they saw bears, bison, wolves, burros, and

New scholarship at Kish College

Nancy D. Castle, recently made a donation to the Kishwaukee College Foundation to establish the Nancy D. Castle Scholarship.

Castle began the new scholarship to support Kish students who are unable to receive federal financial aid due to their residency status.

The first scholarship awards will be for Spring 2020.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled in at least nine credit hours and be in good academic standing.

The Byron Civic Band will conclude its fall 2019 session with a concert on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Byron Middle School Auditorium.

The performance is open to the public with a free will donation.

Musicians from surrounding communities will feature music popular in America through the years.

Beginning with Under the British Flag, a medley of five fife and drum songs that were heard during Colonial times, American Civil War Fantasy, Scott Joplin, Original Dixieland Concerto, Tin Pan Alley, songs from the 1920s, Glenn Miller, a Beatles medley, and Liberty Bell March.

Featured soloist is Jim Martindale on cornet in The Maid of the Mist. Martindale has been playing the cornet for 65 years and also performs with the Rockford Concert Band, Old Towne Band, Kishwaukee Community Band, Rockford Christian Fellowship Band, East Bank Commanders, First Free Church Orchestra, Mt. Morris Band, Starlight Theater Orchestra, Freeport Community Band, and 566th Air Force

Band.

He is a former elementary school teacher and played part time in an Air Force Band.

After he retired from teaching 17 years ago, he has been on a practice project for the last 15 years, trying to practice two hours per day to improve his solo cornet skills.

He has reached 9,700 hours practiced and should reach his 10,000 hour goal in a year or so.

Mark Rose is the director and comes with a wealth of musical knowledge and background.

He has music degrees from VanderCook College of Music and the University of Illinois.

He has conducted or performed on clarinet, bass clarinet, and saxophone in most musical groups in the Rockford area. He is the current conductor of the Rock Valley College Old Towne Band and plays in the Rockford Wind Ensemble, the Rockford Concert Band, Dixieland Band, and the Knock on Wood Clarinet Choir.

71st Halloween Parade & Costume Contest Oct. 31 The 71st annual Halloween Parade & Costume Contest sponsored by the Oregon Knights of Columbus will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31 at the Oregon Coliseum.

The parade begins at 4:30 p.m. and will form on the north side of the Coliseum.

Led by the Oregon Police and Fire Departments, the parade will go south on Fifth Street to Jefferson Street, east on Jefferson to Third Street, north on Third to Franklin and then west back to the Coliseum.

Costume judging will be inside the Coliseum immediately after the parade.

Judging will be done in four categories: Class 1—ages 0 to 1, Class 2—ages 2 to 4; Class 3—ages 5 to 7; and Class 4—ages 8 and older.

Prizes will be awarded for first through fourth place in each category.

A Best of Show trophy will be presented on behalf of Kaczmarzyk Agency, Inc. for the best costume overall as selected by the judges.

CLUB NEWS Oregon Woman’s Club celebrates selling war bonds, establishing libraries, campaigning for the passage of seat 125th anniversary The Oregon Woman’s Clubc celebrated the 125thanniversary of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Illinois at its monthly meeting on Oct. 21.

Chapters all across Illinois have been involved in community service projects ranging from supporting the 19th amendment to the constitution, which gave women the right to the vote to encouraging education for women,

belt laws, and supporting community shelters for the homeless and for abused women.

Along with the balloons and birthday cake, the members explored how to dig into their personal histories with the help of Laurie Carlin Perry, field genealogist for the Rochelle Chapter of the DAR. This has been a long awaited moment for family and friends who have endured almost three years of heartache and loss following their deaths. This moment is bittersweet. For while justice may be served and questions may now be answered, we are still left with the sadness of knowing that they are no longer with us.

“When we first established The Maggie & Amos Foundation, we emphasized that we wanted Maggie & Amos to be remembered for how they lived their lives and not for how they died. We vowed that we would continue their legacy of kindness and giving to others in their names.

We continue to aspire to hold true to this. So for our statement, we would

like to share with you a few things about Maggie and Amos that compel us to work so hard to keep their memories alive.

“Maggie was a fun-loving, laugh-seeking, sass-backing, one-ofa-kind gal. She was fierce in her love for her family, friends, students, and child. A mamma bear if there ever was one. She was a mix of soft hearted and hard headed, which was a perfect complement to the children that she taught.

“Amos was all boy who inherited his mother’s goofy, yet thoughtful nature. He lived to be outside, digging in the dirt, creating paths and hills for his tractors to plow over. “ On October 19, 2016, Maggie and Amos were cruelly taken away from us. These past three years have

been spent working through our stages of grief, waiting and praying that resolution would come. We are grateful to our local law enforcement for the many hours of time spent thoroughly investigating the events that occurred that night.

“We continue to look to our local states attorney and judicial department to ensure that justice is served appropriately and with fidelity for Maggie and Amos.

“And as always, we at The Maggie & Amos Foundation promise to our community that we will continue to diligently serve you with our original intent… that the message of Maggie and Amos’s story will not be one of an unspeakable act, but one of unconditional love and goodwill to others.”

Family and friends of a mother and son who were killed in 2016 stood in a light rain on Oct. 19 to mark their deaths and remind everyone not to dwell in sadness.

“What I think makes me most sad about their passing is just the loss of potential and possibility,” said Lynn Kalnins, principal of the Chana Education Center where Maggie was employed.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer and her 3-year-old son Amos died Oct. 19, 2016 following a fire at their Byron home which investigators say was intentionally set.

Maggie’s ex-husband and Amos’ father, Duane Meyer, 37, of Stillman Valley, has been charged with their murders and aggravated arson.

He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Emergency crews arrived the Meyer home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive just after 6:30 a.m. to find the house consumed by a fire that was later determined to be deliberately set.

Maggie, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home, and Amos, 3, was pronounced dead a short time later at Rockford Memorial Hospital.

Saturday night organizers spoke briefly to the crowd and thanked law enforcement officials for their work on the case.

“The lesson that Maggie has left us is that we will not dwell in the sadness and darkness of what happened,” Kalnins said.

Katherine Pearce, the mother of one of Maggie’s closest friends, said the focus of family and friends should be remembering Maggie’s and Amos’ legacies.

“We want to continue to be that force of love for each other and remember to live life and be learning, laughing, loving. We need to live out their love in their light in honor of Maggie and Amos,” she said. “Every time the sun shines let’s think of Maggie and Amos.

Houston gets loose, leads Forreston past Polo

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In a marathon Tuesday night match between Forreston and Polo with long volleys, diving saves and fierce net play, a breakthrough finally occurred with the score tied 13-13 in the third game.

That is when Alexus Houston got loose. After being bottled up by Marco blocks for the first two and a half games, the 5-foot-7 outside hitter had seven kills in a 10-point run by Forreston.

That made it 22-13 and Forreston escaped with a 25-27, 25-23, 25-16 win.

“She started off slow tonight with a ton of hitting errors,” Forreston coach Shannon Williams said.

“Once we got more ball control and better sets, Alexus was hard to stop.”

She also added the 10th point on a block to make it 22-13 and a determined Polo team was never able to recover after giving highly-touted Forreston (11-1, 23-8-1) all they could handle in both matches this season.

“Our goal was to put some blocks up against her,” Polo coach Rhiannon Seible said. “Where we struggled was holes in the blocks.”

The Marcos (5-8, 11-13-2) took Forreston to three sets on Sept. 26 at home and won the first game on Forreston’s home court 27-25.

They almost pulled off the upset, pulling within a 22-22 tie in game two, but a pair of return errors proved costly and Houston closed the 25-23 win out with a kill after a long volley.

“Polo gave us everything we could handle,” Williams said. “They have hitters and good athletes.”

With Marah Blake serving, the Marcos came back from a 23-16 deficit in game one to pull within 23-20. Forreston made it 24-20 but committed return and service errors to let Polo tie it 24-all on a Mallory Patterson kill.

After an out-of-bounds by the Cardinals, Alex Dusing gave Polo the win with two straight points.

The second game was even closer with neither team ahead by more than three points. Sophomore Nicole Boelens led the way for Polo with seven kill in the close loss.

“We played like a team with everyone having a part in it,” Seibel said. “Our setters knew where our strengths are and we had a solid row with blocking.”

The Marcos were hurt by middle hitter and tallest player on the court, Taylor Greenfield, having three kills midway through the second game.

Kara Erdmann quietly controlled the back court for the Cardinals with a desperation shot in the second game falling in for a score and early 5-3 lead.

She then made it 6-3 on a kill.

“We’re excited for the regional,” Seible said.

“This is our best record in over 10 years.”

Individual leaders for Forreston were: Houston 19 kills, Erdmann 10 kills, Greenfield 8 kills, and Brooke Boettner, 21 assists.

After running roughshod over its first seven opponents, undefeated Polo finally got tested in 8-man football from fellow NUIC mate River Ridge on Oct. 18.

The Marcos won 34-8, but coach Jeff Bumstead knew his team was in a dogfight.

“We had adversity to overcome,” Bumstead told his team afterwards, some of whom could be heard coughing. “We’re beat up, sick and sore.

There’s no practice Monday. You guys need to rest up and get healthy.”

Polo rang up 346 yards on the ground and only passed the ball once, a PAT conversion to lineman Scott Prerost.

“Our line (Prerost, Cole Faivre, Brady Clark, Julian Warzak, Kahlil Sankey) did a great job of opening holes,” quarterback Tucker Mumford said. “They are small, but have huge hearts. It’s crazy what they can do.”

Mumford broke the game open early in the third quarter on a 60-yard touchdown run. He got past the right side of the line and outran that final defender to the end zone for a 20-0 lead.

Mumford also added a 16-yard scamper on third-and long for Polo’s final touchdown. In the second half, he had 139 yards on 10 carries.

“Our QB tore it up,” running back Jace Coffey said. “Everybody had a great effort. I’m happy with how we played.”

Coffey did his part with a pair of touchdowns, sharing the bulk of carries with Jesse Powell and Alex Davies.

“They wore us down in the second half,” River Ridge coach Doug Nicholas said. “Polo was more physical. We tried to stay home and defend the option.”

After being stacked up for negative rushing yardage and a 3-andout on its opening possession, the Wildcats reverted to a passing attack for much of the remainder of the game.

Missing on their first six attempts, River Ridge finally made a completion on a 30-yarder from Bryton Engle to Sam Whitmer and second-and-25. The Marco defense then stiffened and Engle threw incompletion on fourth-and-goal from the 2.

That kept the score at 12-0 late in the second quarter. Davies, who left the game with a sore knee, had Polo’s first touchdown on a 4-yard run.

“We needed to score before half to have a chance,” Nicholas said.

“Missed passes hurt us.”

With an 8-0 record, Polo joins Milford as the lone undefeated teams in the 8-man league.

“River Ridge plays Milford next week and as a team from our old conference, we’re rooting for them,” Bumstead said. “If they can beat them, it would also give us a top (playoff) seed, provided we win our last game.”

Committing to 8-man has been a new and rewarding experience for the Marcos and Bumstead sees a bright future.

“A lot of teams are talking about doing it,” he said. “Next year, we should have at least 20-25 teams.”

SPORTS ROUNDUP Football North Boone 35, Oregon 19: Oregon matched a pair of North Boone first-quarter scores with two of its own, but the Vikings pulled away for a 35-19 win on Oct. 18 at Landers-Loomis Field.

Breccan Berns scored on a 9-yard run with 3:41 left in the first quarter, and after North Boone responded with a 12-second scoring drive, the Hawks added another score with 1:34 left in the quarter when Ryker Finch scored on a 24-yard run.

But a Logan Emanuel 63-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and a pair of North Boone touchdowns in the third put the Vikings up 35-12. Finch added a 3-yard rushing score in the fourth quarter.

Berns carried the ball 35 times for 190 yards. Finch added 17 carries for 207.

Finch completed 10 of 15 passes for 100 yards, with Jacob Milliman grabbing five catches for 52 yards.

Aquin 36, Forreston 30: Aquin Scored 22 straight second-half points and fought off a late Forreston charge to knock off the defending-state champs, stay undefeated on the season.

It was the first time Forreston had lost back-to-back games in nine years.

Forreston led 22-14 at halftime after Ethan Mulder ran for three touchdowns Aquin countered with two touchdown passes and an interception that led to another score.

I

finally got to an 8-man football game and here is my full report – it is no different than 11-man ball with running, passing, blocking and tackling.

That’s what football is, right?

I didn’t even notice the field being that much narrower.

Polo moved to 8-0 with its win over River Ridge (6-2), which looks to be a team on the rise with so many sophomores and juniors on the roster.

Likewise, Polo has a solid nucleus returning next year when it is hoped more teams jump on board 8-man.

Word is that another five have committed with another five seeking more info.

Here is a suggestion for the 8-man league to draw more attention to itself. When the playoffs begin, schedule your games during the week nights instead of on Saturdays when the vast majority of IHSA play takes place.

Northern Illinois University and other MAC football teams do this in November for the exposure on ESPN. I’m not saying 8-man is prime time material yet, but if you stay away from Saturdays you’ll get much more media buzz from local

I like the location of Monmouth College for the championship. A smaller venue is cozier and better atmosphere.

If undefeated Polo and defending champ Milford make it, it will be a huge draw.

Polo’s calling card is a defense that has allowed about 100 fewer points than any other team.

But, as I learned from under-estimating Freeport Aquin, one can never predict the outcome of games.

In fact, a public apology to the Bulldogs for not even considering them in Forreston’s class.

I was proven wrong Friday night.

Good on you Aquin for making such a remarkable turnaround after finishing 4-5 last year.

The former smaller division teams have done an admirable job this season, with Stockton and Orangeville

having chances to finish 6-3. Aquin was 4-5 last year and made a remarkable turnaround.

Those three are in the playoffs, with former larger-school powers Galena and East Dubuque out and Dakota and EPC needing week nine wins to make it.

The way the last three weeks have gone, EPC at Forreston will be a good test for the Cardinals. Mistakes, turnovers and giving up big plays were their downfall against Aquin.

I still contend Forreston is the better team, but the better teams don’t always win. Could it be that Aquin had a mental toughness edge and that will to win more?

Congrats to Oregon Congratulations to both the Oregon soccer team for a regional title and the Hawk volleyball team for handing Rock Falls its first loss of the year in straight sets.

It was a very competitive BNC cross country meet among the girls.

With state-ranked Winnebago, Rock Falls, Rockford Christian and Dixon on display at Fuller Forest Preserve

on Saturday, the Lady Hawks presented themselves well with a fifthplace finish.

It is likely that the girls race was the toughest in the 25-year history of the conference. Leah Watters has qualified for state before but could only manage 25th place.

It was complete and utter domination by the Dixon boys in their fourth straight title. This was only an appetizer for them, as they hope to bring back a 2A state title.

One of my favorite people in coaching, Even Thorp, has built up a dynasty at Dixon.

Speaking of favorites, my favorite press box to hang out in is at Polo. Renewing friendships there is always a warm and welcoming feeling.

I also have a special appreciation for facilities built by the local community with volunteer workers and donated funds. Small schools, like those in the NUIC, are more known for this than their larger counterparts.

But, for overall comfort give me Oregon’s press box over anyplace around – big or small.

Students travel anywhere without leaving school Rahn Junior High students are using virtual reality

BY CODY CUTTER ccutter@saukvalley.com The Great Barrier Reef on the coast of Australia was the locale of the latest board meeting for Oregon schools – or so it seemed.

Board members followed Gabe Williams deep inside the Pacific Ocean for a tour of underwater coral, plants and creatures.

If only more meetings could have that same experience, President Bryan Willis said.

“It sure felt like I was wet,” he said.

No scuba equipment, air tanks or any water, however, was involved in this particular trip; just a headset and an iPhone connected to it.

With virtual reality goggles, students at David L. Rahn Junior High School in Mt. Morris can visit various historic sites and museums around the world without physically leaving the classroom.

The school received 30 sets, with the 80% of the $5,800 price tag provided by a grant from the Etnyre Foundation, and the rest by the school district, Superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

Gabe Williams, an eighth-grader from Chana, recently demonstrated the red RobotLAB goggles to the board at the Oregon High School library.

He opened up a compartment within the goggles to program each set with touches on each iPhone, and closed it and handed it to each of the six board members to see through. Plenty of heads turned as arrows on the screen invited wearers to find special items of interest.

“They can help us with the learning experience because sometimes they can tell us something that we can’t see right in front of us,” he said. “We get to go to some cool journeys around the world.

“It’s very cool to experience all of this stuff around you.”

The goggles are for use in Nate Rogers’ technology and study hall classes, and allow kids to visually experience being at places where they may not get the chance to visit.

The Expeditions app provides a variety of interesting places, such as Yellowstone National Park, the San Diego Zoo, South Africa and South America; and also takes one back in time to events such as World War II and places such as ancient Egypt.

Rogers controls the lessons and locales through a tablet.

Seeing the Great Barrier Reef up close helped Williams overcome any nervousness Gabe had about going deep underwater.

“We went to this ocean, and I looked down, and there was nothing down there. I was wondering what I was standing on, and I wasn’t standing on anything.”

The goggles are also a tool to create visual tours. Rogers plans to have an enrichment class use the Cardboard and Poly apps through Google to take 3-dimensional and panoramic pictures to put together a walk through of the school.

Willis enjoys seeing the kids engage in a unique form of multi-sensory education.

“I think it’s neat that the kids get to see different things,” he said. “Some of these kids are never going to see the Great Barrier Reef, and to be able to see that in virtual reality is pretty awesome for a lot of these kids.”

BYRON FOREST PRESERVE The Byron Forest Preserve District will offer a Hunter Safety Education Class on Saturday, Nov. 9 and Sunday, Nov. 10 at the Jarrett Prairie Center, 7993 North River Road in Byron.

The Saturday class will run from 9

a.m. to 3 p.m. and the Sunday class will be from 12 noon to 4 p.m.

This Illinois Department of Natural Resources class is needed to obtain a hunting license.

The class is free but advance registration is required by calling the Byron Forest Preserve at 815 234-8535, extension 200.

Halloween on the Prairie – Sunday, Oct. 27, 12 noon to 4 p.m.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will hosting its annual Halloween on the Prairie event on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 12: noon to 4 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Nature Preserve.

This non-scary family friendly event will feature hay rides through the prai-

rie, live owl and hawk shows provided by the Northern Illinois Raptor Rehab and Education, bounce house, hay bale maze, face painting, spooky games, Halloween crafts, and a free customer appreciation hot dog lunch.

The Ogle County Beef Association would like to thank all of the people who have supported us throughout the year by purchasing the beef products we have sold.

The beef producers sell hamburgers, smoked brisket, ribeyes and other items at the Ogle County Fair. We also provide sandwiches at the two annual Hazelhurst auctions, Let Freedom Ring in Mt Morris and Autumn on Parade in Oregon.

We then give 10% of our gross income from the Ogle County Fair, Let Freedom Ring and Autumn on Parade back to those organizations to help with their expenses.

Open burning regulations outlined for county With shorter days and cooler temperatures, autumn is now here in Ogle County.

The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) routinely fields calls and responds to complaints dealing with the open burning of waste at this time of year.

In Illinois, the Environmental Protection Act has addressed this issue since the 1970’s.

By law in Illinois, only certain types of waste may be openly burned, and even then, only under certain conditions.

No matter where you reside in Illinois, the only materials that can be openly burned are landscape waste generated from that property, certain agricultural materials (ani-

It is illegal to burn furniture, mattresses, tires, Styrofoam, plastic items such as chairs, coolers, or other containers, garbage, batteries and electronics, cabinets, carpet, vinyl siding, roofing shingles, fiberglass, or any type of construction or demolition debris, which includes lumber, OSB, paneling, and decking.

Modern materials are mostly synthetic and petroleum based. Most wood debris is either treated, painted, or can contain adhesives.

Burning these types of materials releases toxins and carcinogens to

the atmosphere and the ash, which is toxic, contaminates the ground where the burn pile is located.

It is in violation of the Illinois Environmental Protection Act and Ogle County ordinances to burn the above materials.

In addition, structures, recreational vehicles, or mobile homes cannot be burned as a method of disposal under any conditions.

Farmers urged to make harvest safety a priority Harvest season is always hectic, but late spring planting this year will mean an especially busy time for farmers over the next few weeks.

The Illinois Department of Labor urges farmers not to forsake safety as they race to bring in the 2019 crop.

“Harvest season reminds us how important farmers are to Illinois’ economy and our way of life. But this busy time also brings additional risks to agriculture workers,” said Michael Kleinik, director of the Illinois Department of Labor. “We want farmers to head home to their families safe and sound at the end of each day.”

Vehicle safety is an especially important focus this time of year.

Tractor overturns are the leading cause of fatalities in the agriculture industry, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. These accidents result in about 130 deaths each year nationwide.

“The roll overs and left-hand turns by farm vehicles on roadways seem to be the top two safety issues,” said Dave Newcomb, Ag Rescue Program Manager with the Illinois Fire Ser-

While tractor roll-over accidents most often occur on the farm, roadways also pose a major safety hazard.

Too often a vehicle attempting to pass causes a collision before the tractor or farm implement can finish a left-hand turn.

Some collisions occur simply because the driver fails to reduce speed for the slower moving farm implement.

Newcomb says impatience and speed are a deadly combination on rural roads this time of year.

Sadly, a farm vehicle/car collision this month near Sterling resulted in the death of a 9-year-old girl. The child was a passenger in a vehicle attempting to pass a farm implement. The car struck a grain cart.

“Please, be patient. Please, slow down,” said Newcomb.

Visibility is also a key to safety on the roads. All agricultural vehi-

cles using the public roadways must display the fluorescent orange Slow Moving Vehicle triangle.

Additionally, tractors and other self-powered farm vehicles must have proper lighting. According to Illinois law: • Lighting is required from 30 minutes before sunset to 30 minutes after sunrise.

• There should be two white lamps on the front of the vehicle, visible from at least 1000 feet to the front of the vehicle.

• There should be two red lamps on the rear of the vehicle, visible from at least 1000 feet to the rear of the vehicle.

• There should be at least one flashing amber signal lamp on the rear of the vehicle, mounted as high as possible and visible from at least 500 feet, which can be used during daylight as well.

Drivers should remember that farm vehicle operators have limited visibility to the rear. Anyone passing such a vehicle needs to use extreme caution.

Modern farm equipment provides effective safety devices if they are used properly.

1990s in Pennsylvania. Since then, Johnson says, it has quickly spread throughout the country.

Like the others, BMSBs will also congregate on buildings looking for somewhere to overwinter. But unlike boxelder bugs and multicolored Asian lady beetle, these insects are more than a nuisance.

“They will feed on a wide variety of tree fruits, vegetables, agricultural crops, and ornamentals and can cause a significant amount of damage,” Johnson said.

They have the typical ‘shield’

shape of stink bugs. And, as their name implies, BSMBs are brown and marmorated (mottled). There are a few characteristics that can be used to differentiate them from our native stink bugs: the antenna are striped with white bands, they have smooth “shoulders,” and they have black and white triangular patterns on their abdomens.

Several other insects are commonly confused with BMSBs. Johnson recommends contacting your local Extension office if you are unsure.

For all of these insects, the best

management strategy for keeping them out of your home is exclusion.

“Make sure windows and doors fit tight and window screens are free from holes. Seal any openings, cracks, and crevices around the foundation, pipes, wires, and chimneys. Finally, make sure siding, eaves, and soffits are in good condition,” Johnsson said.

Insecticides can be applied to the perimeter of buildings, but since these insects are rather mobile, it can be difficult to get good control of them.

Once they enter your home, they can be vacuumed up and placed in soapy water and disposed of. Using insecticides to control these insects indoors is generally not recommended.

As the weather gets colder and the days get shorter, we often start seeing uninvited insect guests in our homes, according to University of Illinois Extension educator Ken Johnson.

Boxelder bugs are commonly found trying to enter houses, especially if there’s a boxelder tree nearby.

These insects are about onehalf inch long and black with orange or red markings.

During the spring and summer, the adults will feed on leaves and seeds of boxelder trees (and occasionally maple and ash trees). When temperatures begin to cool in the fall, they will begin to seek out warmer areas.

“They are most often attracted to buildings with large southern or western exposures, because they are warmer than the surrounding area,” Johnson said.

As they aggregate on a building, they will find cracks and other spaces to squeeze into, occasionally making their way indoors and ending up in walls and attics until warm weather returns.

Multicolored Asian lady beetles are also commonly found attempting to make their way into homes.

According to Johnson, these lady beetles were introduced into the United States to control aphids on pecan trees.

Since their introduction, they have spread throughout the country.

The beetles vary in color from yellow to reddish-orange and have anywhere from zero to 19 spots.

They can often be distinguished from other lady beetles by the presence of an ‘M’ pattern near their head.

In their native China, they will overwinter on tall cliffs.

“Since we lack these in most parts of Illinois, they will instead use buildings to overwinter,” Johnson said.

The brown marmorated stink bug (BSMB), on the rise in Illinois, is the final home invader. This stink bug is native to Asia and was first discovered in the U.S. in the late

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Oct. 15 At approximately 8 p.m., deputies responded to Byron in reference to a domestic disturbance. After an investigation, Timothy P. Grillo, 29 of Byron, was arrested for domestic battery. Grillo was also taken into custody on a Stephenson County warrant. Grillo was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released to correctional staff and held in lieu of bond.

Oct. 16 Antonio Martinez, 41, of Denver, Colorado, was arrested for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop on I-39.

Martinez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

William DeLong, 58 of Dixon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant. DeLong posted the $3,000/10% bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to appear in

court again on Nov. 8.

Oct. 17 Madison Anderson, 22, of Lindenwood, was arrested for driving while license suspended on Mulford Road near Monroe Center after being stopped for speeding.

Anderson was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Ruben E. Garza, 58, of Tennessee, arrested at 2 p.m. for obstructing justice and resisting arrest following a traffic stop for a plate violation at the intersection of Flagg Road and Daysville Road. Ruben was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Matthew McKenzie, 50, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for speeding. His bond was set at $3,000/10% pending an court appearance.

Oct. 18 Darrius Allison, 25, of Freeport, was arrested at 8:47 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 6000 block of North Freeport Road..

Allison was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Oct. 19 Troy Berns, 25, of Rockford, was arrested at 7:56 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance following a traffic stop in the 18000 block of East Illinois 64 for an equipment violation. Berns was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Dale J. Ulrich, 37 of Rockford, was arrested for no valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 500 block of South First Avenue in Forreston. Ulrich was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Ulrich was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Oct. 20 At 2:33 a.m., deputies responded to the 8000 block of North Illinois 251 for a vehicle in the ditch. After an investigation, it was determined that Kyle Carhart, 22, of Janesville, Wisconsin, had driven his Trailblazer into the east ditch, and crashed

Oct. 15 Bryan A. Paradis, 24, of Oregon, was

arrested at 10 a.m. for driving while license revoked. Paradis was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle with a loud muffler. Paradis was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 100 block of Madison Street.

Andrew T. Baatz, 33, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 4:44 p.m. for speeding, 42 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Ahlgrim, 75, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, and a parked 2003 Ford owned by Caleb A. Reinke, 18, of Oregon. No citations were issued.
