Ex-husband/father pleads not guilty to 2016 deaths of Byron mother and son

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com The father of a child who died in a Byron house fire 3 years ago has pleaded not guilty to charges he killed his ex-wife and their 3-year-old son and set their house on fire.

Margaret “Maggie” Meyer, 31, was found dead on a couch on the first floor of her burning home at 2020 N. Silverthorn Drive on Oct. 19, 2016, and her 3-year-old son, Amos, was pronounced dead a short time later at a Rockford hospital.

Duane “D.C.” Meyer, 37, of Byron, who was arrested at 6 a.m. Oct. 9 was indicted by an Ogle County grand jury on four counts of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison, two counts of aggravated arson and one count of concealment of a homicidal death, Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a news conference on Oct. 9.

At the time of his arrest, he also had a loaded firearm and was charged with unlawful use of a weapon, VanVickle said. Meyer, who is being held on $10 million bond, was scheduled to have a bond reduction hearing Oct. 16. Rockford attorney Christopher A. DeRango is

Meyer reported the fire, around 6:40 a.m. that morning. He told officials he was there to pick up his son. The couple had divorced about a month earlier. Ogle County Court records show she filed for the dissolution in November 2014 and the divorce was granted on Sept. 8, 2016.

When firefighters arrived, smoke alarms were sounding, the house was filled with heavy smoke, and Meyer and a Byron police officer were on the lawn performing CPR on Amos, who had been in an upstairs bedroom.

then-Rockford Memorial Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead.

An autopsy showed he died of smoke inhalation.

Authorities have declined to reveal the cause of Maggie Meyer’s death, although they said pathologists have determined it. They also have not said how the fire started.

A representative from the State Fire Marshal’s Office determined the fire was an arson while he was at the scene.

Maggie, the daughter of Donald and Luann Rosko, of Mt. Morris, was a teacher at the Chana Educational Center.

The Rosko family and friends are hosting a candlelight vigil in memorial of the passing of Maggie Rosko and Amos Meyer.

Oct. 19, 2019 marks the third anniversary of their deaths in a Byron fire. The deaths were ruled homicides.

The vigil will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 6:30-8 p.m. on the Ogle County Courthouse Square in Oregon. Candles and holders will be provided.

Law enforcement officials are still working to solve the arson and double homicide three years ago that

took the lives of the young Byron mother and her 3-year-old son.

The vigil will be held outdoors, so participants are asked to dress for the weather. It is requested that those joining the vigil wear green, one of Maggie and Amos’s favorite colors.

If you are unable to attend, please join the online “Light a Candle” memorial. Light a candle where you are and share it on the Justice for Maggie and Amos Facebook page.

Parking will be available in the city’s public parking lots.

Half of large maple tree comes crashing down on pick up

An Arizona man escaped injury on a windy Saturday afternoon when half of a large tree came crashing down, crushing a pickup truck as it sat in the home’s driveway.

Dereck Mast, who owns the home at 411 S. Fourth Street in Oregon, has been hard at work renovating the two-story structure. He was busy cleaning up Saturday afternoon after digging up old bottles below the floor of the detached garage when he heard a loud crack outside.

“All of a sudden I heard a crack and I went outside of the garage and all the leaves were raining down. It was surreal,” he said. “ I went to go move the rental truck that was in the driveway, but it was just raining green all over. I ran back into the garage and just covered up inside. My heart was racing.”

When the noise ended, Mast looked back outside and saw that half of the large maple tree that used to stand on the city-owned terrace, just south of his home, had crashed down grazing a corner of the house and landing across his Dodge Ram rental pickup truck.

“I immediately called my wife and I told her was OK, but that I wanted to show her a photo of what had just happened and when she saw the photo of that big tree she freaked out,” Mast said.

Mast called Climbin’ Tough Tree Service to cut up and remove the tree.

Oregon Street Superintendent Terry Plemmons said he was notified at 3:30 p.m. that the tree had fallen.

“I think its a silver maple,” he said. “We called ComEd and because of the possible damage to the wires near the remaining part of the tree and they are planning on cutting that part down too.”

Mast is from Phoenix, Arizona and has been busy doing a complete renovation of the 1909 home which he plans on having done

“I was having fun finding old bottles from the 1930s and then the tree just fell,” he said.

Railroad club gives honorary status to Congressman Don, Freda Manzullo donated railroading artwork to club Don and Freda Manzullo recently donated several pieces of artwork and books about railroading and model railroading to the Blackhawk Model Railroad Club in Oregon.

The BMRC Club voted to make Don an Honorary Member of the club in recognition for his gifts.

“At our monthly meeting on Oct. 8 refreshments were served and we presented Don with an official vest with his name on it.” said Bill Kalbfus, club member. “Don and Freda delighted the members with stories of their train travels around the world and his time in the House of Representatives.”

The artwork is on display for all to see Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 - 4 p.m.

A brisk wind and chilly temperatures met Lyle Lidholm as he cleared “the cut” on Illinois through Castle Rock State Park on Oct. 12.

The 87-year-old Korean War veteran decided a picnic table in the park’s south parking lot was a good place to rest, eat some jerky, and drink some water along his 320-mile trek to become the first person to hike the Rock River Trail.

Lidholm, a Moline native from Watertown, Wisconsin, began walking the trail Sept. 1 from Theresa, Wisconsin, near the Horicon Marsh.

The trail crosses through Wisconsin and Illinois, spanning 11 counties and 41 communities including Oregon, Dixon, Sterling and Rock Falls.

“When I read about this several years ago, I thought, ‘Wow, a trail, all the way to my hometown, Moline,’” Lidholm said. “I’m not getting any younger, so I figured September and October would be nice. I’m kind of calling it my going-home hike.”

He strolled into Sterling Monday evening.

“I thought, ‘Why don’t I make that one of my last hikes?’,” he said.

“Of course, everyone thought I was nuts.”

The Rock River Trail is relatively new, Lidholm said. After learning about people attempting to be the first to travel the trail in different modes of transportation in his local newspaper, he got the idea to be the first to walk the 320 mile trail.

And he’s doing it all without the help of GPS. The weather hasn’t deterred him, he said, although he did learn the hard way that his wet suit wasn’t so waterproof after all.

He has said he wanted to reach his destination by November, but he’s in no rush. He also expects to walk more than the 320 miles, thanks to detours he encountered along the way.

He walked off course in Rockford, for example, to get around flooding on the trail. What he thought was a trail took him to a cul-de-sac.

“The signage of this trail is practically nonexistent,” he said.

Lidholm began hiking in 1944 as

a Boy Scout. At 15, he and two of his friends decided they didn’t want to go to school, so they took off and hitch-hiked to Waverly, Ohio.

“I left my mother a note saying don’t worry about me, I’m going to go find work,” Lidholm said.

The boys eventually were found by the local police, who called their parents.

He spent the next three years at military school, and two weeks after graduation, the Korean War broke out. He served in the Marines from 1951 to 1959.

As he’s aged, his hikes have grown in distance. His first long-range trek was at 68.

Lidholm said he would like to do a coast-to-coast trek across England “as long as my legs will carry me.”

There aren’t many places he wouldn’t go, he said, except maybe India or Pakistan.

But he knows where he’s headed for now, and his plans after he reaches his destination are far less complicated.

It’s not his first or longest long-distance hike; he tackled more than 800 miles of the Appalachian Trail nearly two decades ago and journeyed the 1,200-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail about 10 years ago.

Lidholm, a retired chef, builder and craftsman, helped dismantle historic structures around Wisconsin in the 1970s to be rebuilt at Old World Wisconsin.

It offers 11 different types of trail including a history trail, birding trail and a new craft brewery and wine trail.

1944 letter sweater perfect fit for museum

BY BETTY OBENDORF CURATOR Polo Historical Society We did have an interesting evening at our Polo Historical Society meeting. It was nice to have a packed house and the fellowship is always great.

We started off looking at Bill Rodermel’s letter sweater of 1944 or maybe even earlier. It fit perfectly on the stand that Ed Olsen made for it.

We did not have anything quite like that sweater and we are pleased to add it to our collection of Polo Community High School memorabilia.

How many of you kept your letter sweater in your closet? I have no idea what happened to mine.

Then we looked at all the patches that Bill and his wife, Beth Lang Rodermel, have saved from high school days. Remember G.A.A!!

By Karen Merlak The cold, biting wind took us all by surprise. The seasons change in His time, at His command.

He takes care of all that is in nature. We remember that He loves us more than the fields and trees.

We are loved day after day, forevermore. For this, we thank Him. This morning in church, I had the honor of greeting my church family. Brian Toms and I shared the joy we have for serving our church.

For our children’s message, Pastor Charlotte Hoppe shared a story with our young friends, Katelyn, Laura, Harper, and Amelia.

We had many area friends visiting

That was your girl’s sports in those days and the letters stood for Girls Athletic Association. I still remember archery out on the field beside the high school.

The week before our meeting I had gone to the library and browsed through the 1944 year book. Beth and Bill were both seniors but by February of 1944 Bill had gone to the service. There was a list of all the P.C.H.S. students who had left to go to the service. It was an impressive list as it was passed around.

We did not go into the experiences of Bill during his service career but decided to save those for another program. He had written out the whole history of his flying time in the air force to be saved at the museum in our military section.

Instead for that particular evening we needed to discuss Polo’s history of having the B-17 at our airport in Polo.

Many people do not even realize

we had an airport from 1946 until 1955 that was different from Radio Ranch. Pictures and information needed to be brought back out so I could get ready to send all to Arizona.

One’s mind needed to be refreshed as to how the story went so many years ago and who had other stories to share. Mike Walton lives near Mesa, Arizona and is connected with the big airplane museum in that area. Some of our members have visited it.

They are getting ready to restore the B-17 that was in Polo so many years ago.

The plane left Polo and went to Florida where it was used to map areas in the middle east. It eventually ended up in the forestry service in Montana where it helped with forest fires. At some point it crashed but parts of the plane are left.

With those parts and other parts salvaged from other B-17 planes they

can restore a B-17 for the museum. There are not many of the B-17 planes left anymore and they would like one for the museum. Through the years since I have been in the museum here, we have had several interested in the history of the plane.

This is not the first time I have sent pictures to someone who had heard of the plane being in Polo.

So we spent the evening looking at all the pictures, reading about the events of having it in Polo, and hearing about how it left as it just managed to clear the last fence as it flew away.

Donna Peugh came with a very large photo album of the airport story since she had lived as a girl on the farm next to the airport. Humphreys entertained Arch Hamilton and his daughter Cecile at their farm for dinner several times. She has made an impressive album so the history is not forgotten.

After church, I took Jean Cunningham to her home, sharing our few minutes of fellowship on the drive.

On the first Saturday morning of October, Dave Burright hosted the monthly men’s breakfast meeting.

Attending the morning meal were Don Hay, Larry Riffle, John Engel, and Charlotte Hoppe.

This past Saturday, the women met for breakfast. Hosted by Martha Johannsen, the ladies enjoyed a wonderful meal and fellowship.

For breakfast, Judy Riffle, Sheryl Hopkins, Vicki Hay, Sandra Ford, Jean Cunningham, June Schafer, and Charlotte Hoppe were in attendance.

This past Tuesday evening, Charlotte Hoppe and Judy Nettz brought a dinner of sandwiches, drinks, and cookies to the Polo High School volleyball teams.

Our church is very happy and blessed to share in this kind of fel-

lowship with so many young people.

This past week was Homecoming for Polo. My nephew, Garrett Bittinger held a place on the court. He brought over his suit for the dance, as it needed to be hemmed. Garrett and I visited while I sewed up the hem for him.

Garrett’s senior year is already moving too fast. His next commitment is to the play. The drama club production, “The Enchanted Book Shop” will be performed on Nov. 8-9.

We are all looking forward to the upcoming production.

Today is the second wedding anniversary for my son, Matt, and his wife, Ema. A year has already passed since our celebration in Chicago. That is a reminder that it has been a year since all three of my kids have been in the same room.

I miss them and I know they miss each other, too.

This past Saturday, Charlotte and I made a road trip to Belvidere to attend a craft show.

My mom and I had set-up our booth at this show several years ago.

It is my favorite show of the year. I

brought Charlotte along a couple of years ago, and now, it’s one of her favorites, too.

We both found treasures to take home. More precious than our purchases is our treasured friendship. Charlotte has made herself an important part of all of our lives.

She reminds us that relationships are one of God’s greatest gifts.

When I write or talk about our church being a family, I truly mean it. We are a family.

We are closer than friends because we continue to love each other unconditionally. The love between us is not earned nor is it diminished.

With God in the relationship, the connections are much deeper and sweeter. I will always treasure my road trips with my fun and spunky friend. Attending a church service is so much more than a sermon and a hymn. It truly is about His family.

I hope to see you next week when we gather together for a time of worship and praise.

Webster University Megan Sander of Rochelle was one of 44 students who completed a 2-day intensive training to earn a Certified Peer Educators (CPE) certification.

Sander, who studies on Webster University’s primary campus in Webster Groves, Missouri, is in the student employment peer mentor role known as Connection Leaders.

CPE Training helps peer mentors develop leadership skills to be able to successfully create and implement campus programs.

The training includes eight modules, covering the role of peer education, helping peers make a behavior change, listening skills, response and referral skills, how to take action and intervene, recognizing the role of diversity and inclusivity, and group dynamics.

Each month, staff select students who have shown persistence in academics, strength of character, and leadership to others.

Anakin Rodriguez was selected as the high school Student of the Month. He is utilizing skills that he has learned to become his own best advocate and is willing to reach out to more staff about needs and wants.

He has shown to be understanding to peers who may be having a tough time and has grown

tremendously with patience.

Elementary Student of the Month was Hayden Haye. Presented with challenges, Hayden has worked through them without losing sight of his goals.

He has put forth effort on all academics, even when he doesn’t want to! He is helpful to others in his class and is very generous and willing to share!

Rory Hammer was middle school Student of the Month. Rory has gotten out of his comfort zone and been open to new opportunities, including

learning Magic the Gathering and playing with some of the high school students during level time.

Rory has shown excellent sportsmanship in all activities and has been respectful when challenging situations arise.

Grace Turner was selected as Challenge Student of the Month. Grace has made a point of focusing on her goals this semester.

She is genuinely working on being the best version of herself and encourages those around her to be successful.

Muzzleloaders to host “Pumpkin Shoot” Oct. 20 Do you want to see a pumpkin carved with a muzzleloader?

Then mark your calendar for Sunday, Oct. 20 for the Chaplin Creek Muzzleloaders’ annual “Pumpkin Shoot.”

“We grow our own pumpkins at the range, and then line them up to see who can make a ‘face’ on the pumpkin. The public is welcome to come to Chaplin Creek Village and observe the marksmanship Oct 20,” said a club representative.

The Chaplin Creek Muzzleloaders is group of local antique and historic gun collectors that call their home Chaplin Creek Village in Franklin Grove.

Rifle Association, the Chaplin Creek Muzzle Loaders exist to “promote, support, nurture, and preserve NMLRA’s and the nation’s rich historical heritage in the sport of muzzleloading.

The club offered recreational, educational, historical, and cultural venues such as match competition, gun making and safety, historical re-enactments, exhibits, museums, libraries, and other related programs”.

Live shooting and meeting dates occur throughout the warm months of the year.

Turtle Recovery in Illinois Tuesday, Nov. 5 - Freeport Dr. Richard King, biology professor at Northern Illinois University will present

information about the Blanding’s Turtle, an endangered species limited to the northern third of Illinois at the Northwest Illinois Audubon Society monthly meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 5. The meeting beings at 7 p.m.

King will describe how the conservation and management of this turtle species is complicated by a long lifespan and use of both wetland and upland habitats. He will also mention efforts to promote this species’ recovery.

The meeting, held at St. John United Church of Christ, 1010 Park Blvd. in Freeport, is open to everyone.

Larry Boes chosen as replacement for Kim Gouker’s board seat

BY LINDSEY SALVATELLI lsalvatelli@saukvalley.com The Ogle County Board approved a zone change for a truck stop, gas station that will stand on the corner of Interstate 39 and Route 72.

Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, Inc., purchased the southeast corner of the intersection in Monroe Township with the intent of

constructing a service station with a convenience store, fast food restaurant and a tire service shop.

The board unanimously approved the zone change request during its Oct. 15 meeting at Focus House, nortth of Rochelle.

Board member Thomas Smith said he welcomed the business. He said Love’s representative Chad Bruner provided presentations that were “unbelievable.”

Smith said there were some complaints about the business causing an increase in traffic, but he doesn’t think it would make a different from the typical traffic disturbances that occurs along the route because it’s “there now.”

“When 39 gets blocked, they get off 72 and they take all those trucks and they bring them over to 251. They bring them down and they bring them back. The traffic is there when it happens,” he said.

Locals have another route they take when traffic is rerouted through the area, he said.

Zoning administrator Harry Adams Jr. said it was zoned as a special use because the land was zoned for agriculture purposes. The new zoning approved by the Board, the B-3 Restricted Interstate Highway Area Business District, is a restrictive zoning that requires a special use to allow select businesses, like truck stops and restaurants, within

the area.

In other action, Larry Boes of Byron was sworn in as the District 6 Board representative to replace the vacancy created by the death of Kim Gouker.

Gouker, 66, of Byron, died at home on Sept. 10 after a short illness.

Gouker was elected to his first term on the county board in 1996 and had served as board chairman since December of 2012.

He was instrumental in the planning and building of the Ogle County Judicial Center, the restoration of the historic Ogle County Courthouse, and the planning and building of the new Ogle County Jail that is currently under construction.

Le-Win dominates Forreston in 1A matchup Panthers win 46-14 ending Forreston’s 16-game win streak

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In a matchup between the two top ranked teams in 1A, it was LenaWinslow completely dominating Forreston on Oct. 11 and ending its 16-game winning streak.

Racing to a 38-0 halftime lead, the Panthers put an exclamation point on the highly-touted matchup with a running clock early in the fourth quarter on its way to a 46-14 win.

“I told our kids this was a measuring stick,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “Obviously, we didn’t pass it and something has to change.

We started to get exposed last week against West Carroll.”

Using a 4-man defensive front to start the game and Derek DeVries leading the charge, Forreston put Le-Win into a fourth-and-6 on the opening drive, but sophomore quarterback Luke Benson found Marey Robey over the middle with a 45-yard touchdown pass.

Forreston fumbled the ball away its second play from scrimmage, but forced Le-Win to a 3-and out.

The Cardinal’s second drive didn’t go much better with two yards gained before punting.

Le-Win’s next scoring drive came also after Forreston forced another fourth down. Benson scrambled for the first down and five plays later found the end zone for a 16-0 lead.

“We weren’t playing smart football and sticking to our rules,” Zick said. “We didn’t follow assignments.

Th good thing is that can be fixed.”

Hoping to cut into that lead, Forreston put an impressive 16-play drive together. Braden Politsch gained six yards and Jordan Neuschwander got outside for eight to get things started. A 15-yard unsportsmanlike on L-W moved the ball past midfield.

The key play was a 13-yard reception, the only double-digit gain in the first half, from Bailey Cullor to Jakob Boomgarden on fourth down. Cullor later converted another fourth down on a short run and Forreston had first-and-goal.

Unfortunately, the drive stalled at the 3-yard line. Two plays later,

“That’s a great Le-Win team,” Zick said. “You make mistakes and they will expose it.”

On their way to 231 first-half rushing yards, it was Marey Robey tacking on a 24-yard touchdown and Sean Ormiston bouncing off a pack of would-be tacklers for a 6-yarder for the 38-0 lead.

“About the middle of the first quarter, we solved the 4-man front,” Le-Win coach Ric Arand said. “It was obvious they were trying to stop Ormiston.”

With a pair of 270-pound Iowa recruits in senior Isaiah Bruce and junior Gennings Dunker anchoring the Panther line, the normally potent Forreston ground game was held to 57 yards in the first half.

The athleticism of those two D-I players was best exemplified in a

sandwich sack of Cullor late on the second quarter. Besides Bruce and Gennings crashing in on the play, it was Ormiston right on their tail to clean up. Cullor didn’t have a chance and neither did Forreston.

“I thought our defense played lights out,” Arand said. “The main focus was to stop the fullback. We gave up a little on the perimeter, but not much. Our outside linebackers and corners did a good job stringing it out and we flowed well to the ball as a team.”

Dom Christensen, the star of Forreston’s playoff semifinal upset of Le-Win last year, had a 4-yard TD to give the large home crowd something to cheer about in the third quarter.

Le-Win fumbled the ensuing kickoff, but Forreston could only advance the ball to the 25-yard line before turning it over on downs.

Cullor added another score,with Politsch going in for the PAT. Cayden Shelton led the Cardinals with 47 yards rushing on nine carries. Politsch had 44 on 15 rushes and Christensen 21 on nine carries.

With running back/linebacker Ethan Mulder out with and injury, it was Politsch getting the bulk of calls at fullback. The Cardinals were also hurt in the line with Jordan Beck out.

“Our whole ability to be successful with no huddle it to wear them down,” Zick said. “That didn’t happen tonight. We had a lot of missed opportunities.”

Forreston finished with 196 yards and 56 carries. L-W had 343 on 41 totes, with Valentine and Ormiston both going over 100 yards.

The Cardinals face their second undefeated team in a row when they travel to Freeport Aquin.

Hawks advance to regional final Oregon defeated Johnsburg 5-0 in their first game at the Johnsburg Regional on Tuesday.

Josh Sitze led the team with three goals, Alvaro Soler had one goal and two assists, Keshon Reed had one goal, and both Grant Cermak and Arnau Fastenrath had assists.

Owen Ketter had nine saves in goal as well.

“We play in the regional championship on Saturday against the winner of Stillman Valley and Marian Catholic (Woodstock),” said Coach Seger Larson. “Our overall record is now 15-8-0.”

Oregon 5, Belvidere 2: The Hawks defeated Belvidere 5-2 in their regular season finale on Oct. 11. Oregon was led

by Josh Sitze with two goals and one assist.

Volleyball Durand defeated Polo 25-10, 25-8: The Marcos fell in an NUIC South match in Durand on Oct. 10. Nicole Boelens had three kills, two assists and six digs.

Rockford Lutheran defeats Forreston 25-21, 25-17: The Lady Cardinals fell to the Crusaders in a home match on Oct. 8. Individual leaders for Forreston were: Alexus Houston nine kills; Taylor Greenfield four blocks; and Kara Erdmann,14 Digs.

Football Winnebago 35, Oregon 14: The Indians scored the first 28 points en route to a Big Northern home win over the Hawks on Oct. 11.

Breccan Berns had 125 rushing yards including a 70-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Oregon (1-6, 1-6). Berns also completed a 20-yard touchdown pass to Jacob Milliman.

For the post season, the Oregon soccer team travels to a place you can’t get to from here – Johnsburg.

Technically, you can eventually find it, but it is very inconvenient.

The reason Oregon is headed to the hinterlands is because of the IHSA seeding formula. Richmond-Burton, which is just up the road from Johnsburg, is No. 1 sub-sectional seed and Oregon No. 2.

R-B goes to Rockford Christian instead because host RC is seed No. 4. Yes, these seeds can create more travel, but it avoids having a bunch of top teams in the same regional.

If RC wasn’t a host, Oregon would not have to go to Johnsburg. At least the reward of winning this regional is coming home to the Oregon sectional.

The Hawks’ main competition will be No. 3 seed Woodstock Marian (8-13 overall, 1-8 in conference). That record is deceiving because of the many larger suburban schools they play.

One of my favorite sporting events of the year is the Amboy Columbus Day cross country meet, with some of the best teams in 1A and buses lined along highway 52 as far as the eye can see.

Here is an observation some may call sexist, but many others have made same comment. It is this – many a girl cross country runner peaks as a freshman or sophomore and then regresses because of weight gain and structure.

When it comes to one’s body, it is a lot tougher being a female than a male.

After cross country, it was off to Silver Ridge for the Oregon golf sectional where another observation is made – 1A private schools have an advantage over public schools

because those girls have a more privileged lifestyle and afforded better opportunities to succeed on the golf course.

At the 2A level, affluent suburban public schools have the same advantage as the privates, as evidenced by scores like a 298 by Lincolnshire Stevenson. That’s four girls averaging a shade under 75 each.

f there was one play that best described Lena-Winslow’s drubbing of Forreston in football on Oct. 11, it was Bailey Cullor running for his life with Gennings Dunker, Isaiah Bruce, and Sean Ormiston in hot pursuit late in the first half.

Cullor is an excellent quarterback, but did not have a chance against three of the absolute best players in 1A, as he was sacked for a loss.

As Le-Win coach Ric Arends said, his defense played “lights out”.

Without needing a fourth down conversion or penalty, the Cardinals could only muster two solid first downs in the first half.

The longest run from scrimmage was eight yards, as they fell behind 38-0.

The no-huddle offense was efficiently run, but there was nowhere for it to go.

Bottom line - Forreston did not have the size and physicality to come close to matching up with the Panthers.

Derek DeVries did all he could, raising havoc early with the L-W running game.

Eventually, Le-Win figured out Forreston defense and used the combo of physicality and big-play ability to put the hammer down.

Besides a strong running game, Le-Win proved adept at passing, completing 3-of-4 passes for 81 yards, including a touchdown on fourthand-6 to start the scoring.

Even though the 1A north quadrant will be extremely tough, this is going to be a team very difficult to knock off.

Does Morrison have a chance?

They are very fast, but Forreston has some speed too.

Besides, I truly doubt if anyone in 1A comes anywhere close to the physical presence of Le-Win.

• OREGON LIONS Continued from Page 11 Some of the eyeglasses are able to be repurposed and used by people who might not otherwise be able to afford glasses, but the majority of the eyeglasses are sent away so that the metal in the frames can be recycled.

The Oregon Lions spend one day a month in Sycamore to sort glasses.

Oregon Lions Fundraisers Oregon Lions Club Members were kept busy with two fundraising activities in the last few weeks.

Members were stationed outside Oregon businesses and at the intersection of Route 2 and Highway 64 on Sept. 27-28, asking for donations and handing out candy during their annual Candy Day Event.

The following weekend they sold pork chops, brats and chicken breast sandwiches during the Autumn on Parade Festival in Oregon on Oct. 5-6.

Oregon Lions thanks everyone who donated during Lions Candy Days and supported them by purchasing food from their booth during the Autumn on Parade Festival.

The grounds of the Boone County Museum of History are now graced by an iconic monument to Belvidere’s, and in fact all, First Responders.

Elected officials from Boone County, City of Belvidere, law enforcement leaders from Boone County and City of Belvidere, and firefighters displaying a wealth of equipment were all on hand to commemorate the dedication.

The larger-than-life bronze monument portrays a law enforcement officer, a blanket-wrapped rescued child, and a firefighter.

Created and executed by sculptor Jeff Adams of Oregon/Mt. Morris and sponsored by Jack and Peggy Wolf Family Foundation, the monument will be an inspiration for generations to come.

Oct. 4 At 4:50 p.m., police responded to a three-car traffic crash on the Washington Street bridge involving a 2011 Cadillac driven by Harold W. Nance, 94, of Oregon, that struck a 2005 Chevrolet driven by David B. Berg, 45, of Oregon, which then struck a 2006 Ford driven

by Mary T. Janulis, 52, of Oak Lawn. No citations were issued.

Oct. 6 At 2:57 p.m., police responded to a two-car traffic crash at the intersection of N. 3rd and Monroe Streets where a 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Artur T. Pyszniak, 47, of Streamwood, struck a 2019 GMC driven by David A. Turner, 71, of Winnebago. Pyszniak was issued a citation for improper overtaking.

Oct. 7 At 10:19 a.m., police took one 15-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of distribution of harmful material. The juvenile was released into a parent’s custody with diversion services requested and referral for juvenile delinquency being sent to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Oct. 8 At 7:46 a.m.,police responded to the 300 block of S. 2nd Street for a report of a hit and run traffic crash that occurred at some point the prior evening involving a parked 2018 Dodge belonging to Riley S. Comins, 33, of Oregon, and a parked 2013 Ford belonging to Roger L. Comins, 41, of Oregon. Following a thorough investigation, Alexander J. Garcia, 27, of Oregon, was issued a citation for failure to give information after striking an unattended vehicle.

Oct. 10 At 3:03 p.m., police took one 15-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for criminal damage to school property. The juvenile was released into a guardian’s custody with referral for juvenile delinquency being sent to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office.

Joseph D. Caldwell, II,27, of Dixon, was arrested at 7:10 p.m. for violation of orders of protection. Caldwell was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Oct. 11 Dawn M. Epperson, age 52, Rockford, was issued a citation at 5:10 p.m. for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph zone.

This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

Oct. 12 Byran D. Buss, 18, of Rockford, was issued citations at 12:21 a.m. for speeding, 50 mph in a 30 mph zone, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle. These violations occurred in the 500 block of N. 4th Street.

Elizabeth A. Gray, 34, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10:23 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Robert J. Leddy, Jr., 70, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 6:19 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Lorie A. Mallek, 32, of Freeport, was issued a citation at 11:54 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 700 block of E. Washington Street.

Oct. 13 Jory S. Revels, 30, of Rockford, was

issued civil citations at 12:30 a.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These citations were issued in the 100 block of S. 4th Street.

Alexis C. Castillo, 19, Oregon, was arrested at 9:21 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Castillo was also issued a citation for unlawful window tint; and civil citations for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams.

ROBERT GIBSON DRUCKS Robert Gibson Drucks, 84,of Oregon, died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019 at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

He was born Dec. 6, 1934 in Chicago Heights, the son of Eric and Persis “Peggy” (Gibson) Drucks.

He graduated from Grant Community High School in 1953. After graduating he served his country in the U.S. Navy Reserve from 1953 – 1978 at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he taught Machine Repair as a First Class

gon, and raised their six children in a happy and busy home on South Sixth Street.

After her children were all enrolled in school, Phyllis resumed her teaching career and became a Language Arts teacher at Ruby Nash School and Etnyre Middle School in Oregon.

She loved teaching and had incredibly clear recollection of nearly all her former students. In retirement her life was filled with her loving husband, John, until he passed away in 2003, her many books, friends, and especially her family as it continued to bless her with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Phyllis was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon and Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

Despite the normal effects of aging, Phyllis kept her sunny disposition.

Throughout her life and right up to the end, the calm assurance of her strong faith guided her.

In the final chapter of Phyllis’ life, her caregiver, Sara, provided her with loving care and lasting friendship.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, John, sister Ann Baker, brother-in-law Gene Baker, and

infant brother Herbert.

Survivors include six children: John J. (Cathy) Conroy of Elmhurst,Trisha (Edward) Eckhart of Libertyville, Douglas (Julie) Conroy of Geneva, Joseph (Sheila) Conroy of Grayslake, Stephen (Julie) Conroy of McHenry and Mary Beth (Bob) Wulf of Victoria, Minnesota, 24 grandchildren: Jack (Anne), Mary (Joe) Simpson, Claire, Patrick, Kevin, Meg and Peter Conroy; Jenny (Scott) Yingling and Matt Eckhart; Elizabeth and Doug (Lauren) Conroy; Joseph, Maureen, Bridget and Brendan Conroy; Stephen, Susan (Nick) Koerner, Michael, John, Will, and Luke Conroy; Rebecca, Robert and Ben Wulf; and 6 great grandchildren: Allie, John and Connor Conroy; Will and Charlie Simpson; Jake Yingling, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Phyllis’ family extends a heartfelt thank you to Serenity Hospice (especially Nurse Sheila) and to Father Naill, the deacons, Communion ministers, and parishioners of St. Mary Parish Oregon for their personal visits and prayers.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, Oct. 21 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon, preceded by a wake at Farrell, Holland & Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, at 4 to 7 p.m., with Rosary at 7 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 20.

Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Robert worked for John’s Mansville Company in Waukegan as a machinist for 45 years. He enjoyed target shooting, traveling to the Upper Peninsula every year to see the fall colors, spending time with his grandchildren, going to the gun shop and the sunrise restaurant to see and be

with his friends.

He was a former member of the Twin Towers Gun Club.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Vinna, and his sister Barbara Severs.

He is survived by his two sons; Eric Robert (Kelly) Drucks of Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin and Kenneth (Susan) Drucks of Oregon, six grandchildren; Nicholas, Michael, and Matthew Drucks, Amy (Derek) Roche,

Rachel (Tim) White, and Emily (Michael) Looney, and three great grandchildren; Russell, Rory, and Winnie.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street in Oregon.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home from noon to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral. Burial will be at the Daysville Cemetery near Oregon.

A memorial fund is established for Autism Research.

Phyllis Jean Conroy, 95, of Oregon, passed away on Oct. 9, 2019 in her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Aug. 14, 1924 in Sterling, to Samuel Percy Stump and Almeda Mae, nee Zook, Stump.

The family moved from Illinois to Fort Dodge, Iowa where Phyllis spent her youth. Reciting poetry in the parlor of their home was a favorite evening family pastime.

As a child, Phyllis loved reading books, singing harmony to church hymns, and playing the violin in an orchestra.

Some of her fondest childhood memories were the carefree, summer days spent at her grandparents’ farm located at Franklin Corners near Morrison.

A special memory was playing with the children of the Mount Carmel Orphanage founded by her grandparents, Abraham and Rosanna Zook.

Located on the family farm, the orphanage’s mission was to care for orphaned children, many from the inner city of Chicago.

In the fresh country air, they would do chores, go to school, and learn the Christian faith. One of the orphan girls became a lifelong friend of Phyllis.

The family eventually returned to Illinois where Phyllis graduated from Polo

High School as the class Valedictorian.

She attended and graduated from North Central College with a bachelor’s degree in education followed by graduate studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.

Heeding the call for teachers needed in the young state of Washington, Phyllis and other teacher friends boarded a train for the Northwest. In the lumbering town of Buckley at the foot of Mount Rainier, Phyllis taught British literature, speech, and directed plays at the local high school.

Returning to Illinois, Phyllis continued her teaching career at Reavis High School in Burbank/Oak Lawn and Stockton High School.

While in Stockton, she met the love of her life, husband John Conroy, who at the time was the U.S. Soil & Water Conservationist for Jo Daviess County.

Since both of their families resided in Dixon, they commuted back and forth on weekends together from Stockton to Dixon. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Phyllis and John were married at St. Patrick’s Church in Dixon on June 14, 1952. The young couple settled in Ore-

OBITUARIES WALTER GREEN SCHRYVER Walter Green Schryver, 82 of Elk Mound, Wisconsin, passed away on October 7, 2019 at Mayo Health Hospital, Eau Claire due to pulmonary fibrosis.

His wife, Dolores, and children, Jennifer, Martin, and Laura were at his side.

Walt was born in Rockford on June 12, 1937 to Martin III and Alice Schryver.

Walt was raised in Polo and attended Congress Grade School in Polo and Polo High School, graduating in 1955.

Walt attended University of Colorado at Boulder, Colorado, studying forestry and business.

He joined the Illinois National Guard from 1959-1964. In 1960, Walt married his high school sweetheart Dolores “Skip” in Polo on June 11 and had a wonderful life of 59 years together.

BARBARA J. WILCOX Barbara J. Wilcox, 79, of Polo, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019.

She was born on Aug. 24, 1940 in Dixon, to Edward & Maude Marquitz.

She married Jim Wilcox in Omaha, Nebraska on May 8, 1971.

Walt started his insurance career at Crum & Forster Insurance in Freeport as an In-Land Marine Underwriter in 1960. After moving to Wisconsin in 1974, Walt became an Insurance Fieldman for Integrity Insurance of Appleton, Wisconsin.

Walt was honored in 1981 in Washington, D.C. as Fieldman of the Year for Wisconsin. He retired from Society Insurance, Fond du Lac in 1999.

Walt’s biggest love was being a volunteer fireman for Wheaton Township. He was the founding father for the Chippewa Falls Fire Protection District. He was the first deputy chief for Wheaton when the Fire District was formed in 1977.

After retiring in 1999, Walt and

Dolores “Skip” traveled in a RV to Florida for the winter several times, as well as the Southwest.

Their favorite trip was to the Sunshine Coast on Vancouver Island.

Walt always had his favorite joke book along when on insurance trips with Integrity agents.

Walt is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dolores; daughter, Jennifer (Anthony) Romero of Severance, Colorado; son, Martin Schryver of Hugo, Minnesota; daughter, Laura (Angel) Bernal of Maplewood, Minnesota; grandchildren, Justin (Candice) Freeberg of Mobile, Alabama, Danielle (Trinston) Jeffries of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Alexis Bernal of Maplewood, Minnesota;

great-grandchildren, Matthew and Lucas Freeberg, Mobile Alabama; sister Lucretia (John) Kelly of Columbia, Illinois; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin III and Alice Schryver; and brother, Martin IV “Timmy” Schryver.

A Celebration of Life for Walt will be at Wheaton Fire Station on Saturday, Nov. 2 from noon-4 p.m. A light lunch will be provided. Interment will be at Fairmont Cemetery in Polo, Illinois.

Any monetary donations will be donated to the Wheaton Fire Department.

Cremation Society of Wisconsin, Altoona is assisting the family with arrangements.
