Sign honors Polo Special Olympian

A crowd of well-wishers turned out Monday afternoon to surprise a Polo resident with a road sign in his honor.

The 20-plus people gathered along Ill. 26 at the south edge of Polo to attend the unveiling of a sign for Scot DeWall, 47, who recently won a gold medal in bocce ball at the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, Washington.

“This is good. I was very surprised,” said a smiling DeWall after city Street Department employees Kendall Kyker and Scott VanKirk pulled the tarp off the green sign.

Among the well-wishers were DeWall’s family, city officials and residents, and State Rep. Brian Stewart (R-Freeport).

Polo Mayor Doug Knapp spoke for all of them.

“On behalf of the City of Polo, Scot, we want you to know how proud we all are of you and what you’ve accomplished,” he said.

DeWall competed in the bocce event in early July and took first place in the singles division.

He also competed in the Unified Team division, where Illinois took third, and Unified Doubles, where he and partner John Fayhee took fifth.

County board approves final jail plan

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The final jail design approved Tuesday by the Ogle County Board will cost less and look better than the one proposed two months ago.

The board approved a design estimated at $25.5 million for a 41,700 square foot building with 152 beds and a more attractive exterior.

Jeff Goodale, Director of Justice at Hellmuth, Obata & Kassabaum, Inc., a Chicago architectural and planning firm, told the board that the design for the jail had been

reworked since July to bring it into line with the budget for the project and make it more compatible with its surroundings.

“I think we have a better partner with the judicial center and a better partner with the neighborhood as well,” Goodale said.

Scaling back from almost a two-story design to one-story took 11,000 square feet from the plan proposed in July, reducing the cost without compromising security, Goodale said.

The plan proposed in July was estimated at $26.7 million.

The new one-story plan uses the same brick on its exterior as the judicial center across the street that it will connect to.

Board chairman Kim Gouker, of Byron, was pleased with the new design.

“This building is much more efficient for our employees to monitor inmates, which makes it safer,” he said.

The exterior will look like an office building, rather than a jail to make it more compatible with the residential neighborhood it touches.

“The outside design is much more attractive and will fit

in with the community. And it’s a million and a half dollars cheaper,” Gouker said.

“It won’t look like a jail and it won’t say jail anywhere on it.”

The jail will be called the Ogle County Judicial Center Annex.

With the final design approved, the county can now move ahead with construction preparation.

Construction manager Thomas Leonard, of Gilbane Building Company, told the board that he expects the work to begin around April 1 and to be completed in approximately 20 months.

Ron and JoDee Bardell are Polo’s Citizens of the Year Volunteer award goes to Polo Fire Department

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com It was an elaborate scheme, but it worked — Ron and JoDee Bardell were completely surprised to be named Polo’s 2018 Citizens of the Year.

“Pretty sneaky. I am shocked,” a smiling Ron said after the announcement was made Monday evening at the annual Polo Chamber of Commerce Dinner at Barnacopia. “I had no idea.”

JoDee had an inkling, but thought Ron would be the only recipient.

She said her family was contacted by a chamber board member who said that several years ago Ron had nominated someone for Cit-

izen of the Year who won, but he didn’t know ahead of time and was disappointed because he didn’t attend the dinner.

The ruse was that he should attend because of who the recipient was this year.

“I thought maybe it was my husband. I had no clue I was involved,” she said.

Chamber President DJ Sanders recounted the couple’s long list of volunteer activities including Polo Athletic Boosters Club, Polo Little League and T-ball, Boy Scouts, Polo Lifeline Food Pantry, Home of Hope, and Second Hand Rose.

“He is very active within the Polo Council of Churches and has raised thousands of dollars for various organizations including Polo Boosters, 4 U Charities, and Darkhorse Lodge,” Sanders said.

“She is also a longtime volunteer at Centennial Elementary School,” he said.

“Perhaps one of her most

generous acts of volunteering takes place when she goes over to Polo Rehab to give residents hand lymph therapy massages free of charge.”

Sanders also credited Ron with helping to save the life of a Polo resident in 1990, when, as a postal worker, he found her suffering from a medical emergency and alerted the police.

Family and friends crowded around the couple with hugs, congratulations, and a lot of smiles after the dinner.

“JoDee and I both did a lot of volunteer work over the years, but I never thought anything like this would happen,” Ron said.

The Polo Fire Department was honored with the Carole Nettz Volunteer of the Year Award.

Fire Chief Tony Karrow accepted the award on behalf of the volunteer department and praised their dedication.

“I’ve got a great bunch of guys and gals,” he said.

Polo Area Community Theatre’s next show “Into the Woods� will be shown on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.  The story from the book by James Lapin, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Enough money raised for Black Hawk repairs

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com It’s official — enough money has been raised to go ahead with making the long-awaited repairs to the Black Hawk Statue.

Eric Schenck, executive director of the Illinois Conservation Foundation, made the announcement Sept.

21 at the annual ICF Gala in Springfield, where members of the Oregon community were among those honored.

Schenck said the $225,000 raised in the last few months by the Oregon Together Black Hawk Restoration Team means contracts can be signed and work can proceed.

“At least $225,000 is now available to match the grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity,” he said

“Some of the money is in the form of pledges, not checks. We are extremely confident we have the money and ever ything we need to proceed.”

Schenck praised the efforts of the Oregon community in raising the funds needed and said a table was reserved for them at Gala.

“We wanted to recognize and thank those from the Oregon community who worked so diligently to raise this money,” he said.

At this p o i n t , Schenck said the Illinois Department of Conservation, which has jur isdiction over the statue, is working with the vendor, Quality Restorations Inc., of Wood Dale, to get concrete mixes prepared for the repairs.

A three-party contract is also being drawn up between the IDNR, ICF, and Quality Restorations Inc. for the actual repair work.

“Most likely what we’re looking at is a spring start for the restoration

work,” Schenck said.

The 48-foot concrete statue will most likely be wrapped in the upcoming weeks to protect it from the winter weather, he said. It has spent the last four winters in protective wrappings.

Schenck said maintenance of the 107-year-old statue will be an ongoing project, even after the repairs are completed next year.

“It’s not one and done,” he said.

“There’s a lot that will need to be done to keep this iconic statue in good condition and accessible to the public. It’s an ongoing and diligent effort.”

The statue, created by sculptor Lorado Taft in 1910 as a tribute to Native Americans, is situated on a high bluff overlooking the Rock River at Lowden State Park near Oregon.

Our speaker for the evening will be Doug Lee, of Dixon, who is chairman of the board of directors for KSB Hospital.

Although as the wind started blowing last night, it made me think of winter and snow.

Our family will be gathering for Autumn on Parade although Kenneth and I have given up on

attempting the parade.

We just gather at the house to see the great -grandchildren and enjoy some special food especially if it is cool and windy.

Linda Gall and I did get to the museum and she helped me put away all the Native American things.

Also we had to find a spot for the hemp information and displays.

We took the John Deere project and put it back in the corner with the big picture of John Deere himself.

I received another call from someone who had gotten large pictures of early Polo framed by Paul Graehling at his auction.

They were very large and very heavy. You have to understand Paul’s framing procedure that was unlike anyone else.

They were matted on the back with plywood which made them heavy to hang on a wall.

The poor woman never did get them hung but just placed in her garage.

They have come back to the museum and then it became our problem as to where we would put

them and who would hang them.

I think the guys were going to work on that so the next time I go over it will be interesting to see where they are.

Pictures cost a lot to get them developed or printed and these were large so we appreciate the donation.

Fall is a very busy time for our congregation as we prepare to reach out to our community.

This past Tuesday, I celebrated my birthday with lots of greetings from friends and family.

I was especially grateful to hear from each of my children. I have always enjoyed celebrating my birthday, even as the number keeps growing.

My daughter, Stephanie, has been very busy with her new job.

This past week, she traveled to New York City for a day of meetings and lunch.

She is heading back to New York this coming week. Since she loves to travel, this new position suits her well.

My son, Matt, and his wife, Ema, are getting ready to make the trip home in a couple of weeks.

We will be celebrating their first anniversary with a wedding in

downtown Chicago.

The details of their special day are coming together. I can’t wait for all of us to be together.

Clint has finalized his plans to come home.

He is finding that mastering adulthood is not an easy task. I know he will get the hang of it soon.

In the meantime, he reminds me of me trying to find my way as a young adult. He is looking forward to spending some time at home.

Over this past weekend, my brother, Ben Bittinger, was over to help stain my deck.

I worked with a brush and roller in the morning and he joined me with a sprayer for the afternoon.

Ben finished the staining project beautifully. I am very blessed to have such a great family.

One of my jobs while Ben was spraying the deck was to look for spots that he missed.

We worked back and forth finding areas that needed a little extra spray of the stain.

My sister-in-law, Jo, joined me in

the task and when we were both satisfied with the look of the deck, Ben was not.

He continued to go over the deck until every spot was covered.

Looking at the finished project, I’m glad he wasn’t satisfied with a job done good enough.

God sees each of us and wants us to have the best life possible.

He keeps working in our lives reminding us of His love and His promises.

Even when we feel that we have been overlooked, He still sees us.

Each one of us is important in His eyes. We all have a purpose according to God. Even on the days when we feel insignificant, we can rest in the fact that we are loved and needed.

At any time, we can turn to the Father and know that we are not alone.

I hope to see you next week in our church or one of our local churches.

Come and greet one another in love. We are a family, brothers and sisters in Christ.

The Oregon Park District is teaming up with the Lorado Taft Field Campus to offer a luncheon and tour for the public.

“Thousands of people visit Taft Campus each year yet many that live close to it haven’t been out for years or haven’t visited at all,” said Oregon Park District Recreation Superintendent Tina Ketter. “The campus is usually closed to the general public but this event offers the perfect opportunity for local residents to visit.”

Culinary Kids a one-day class for kids Let your little gourmet join Ms. Teresa for a fun culinary experience each month at the Oregon Park District with Culinary Kids, a one-day class for ages 6-9.

The class is designed to introduce each participant to the basics of the kitchen in a creative environment.

Continued high water levels of the Rock River has resulted in the cancellation of the 2018 Rock River Sweep.

Organizer Terry Schuster said the sweep was canceled because the river is still in a flood advisory stage with more rain storms predicted this week.

“The river is dropping very slowly, If it is still at advisory stage on Saturday, then White Pelican would not be able to provide canoes,” Schuster said. “The current height of water also makes it difficult to walk along banks.

Islands are still partially submerged.”

White Pelican Canoe & Kayak Rental Inc., of Oregon, was going

to provide a limited number of canoes for use for the sweep and a free shuttle service from Castle Rock boat landing back to Kiwanis Park for those with their own canoes or kayaks.

“Given the uncertainty of river height, less accessible river banks, and the rainy cold weather predicted for Saturday we’re reluctantly canceling until 2019,” Schuster said.

The river sweep was initially scheduled for Sept. 8, but heavy rains prompted organizers to move the event date.

The Rock River Sweep is an effort by many groups to clean up and down the Rock River, from Horicon, Wisconsin, to where it

meets the Mississippi River in Rock Island.

It is sponsored by RockRiverSweep.org, a grass roots, non-forprofit organization dedicated to preserving the health and ecosystem of the Rock River and its tributaries.

Locally, the Oregon Rock River Sweep is also sponsored by the Ogle County Solid Waste Management, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon Park District, Oregon Together, and American Rivers National River Cleanup.

Golf ’s post season ready to begin next week B

elieve it or not, the post-season begins next week for fall sports with golf regionals.

With golf courses closing at an alarming rate, it probably shouldn’t be a surprise that the quality of play among high school golfing is down from its peak of about 20 years ago.

That was when courses were being built all over the place and the sport was never more popular.

During the 1990s, many smaller schools that hadn’t offered golf, started adding it.

Those teams remain to this day, but there aren’t as many kids out and the caliber of skills has decreased.

Scores of 150-160s for duals are being replaced with 170-180s.

Yes, there are still some top-flight individuals, but nowhere near as many as years past.

The same applies for cross country, especially the boys. In northern

COMMENTARY Andy Colbert Illinois, small-school cross country might be at it lowest point ever.

I’ve always felt the main culprit to be soccer, in that so many of the runner types are doing that instead of doing cross country. Another factor in both golf and cross country is fewer participation across the board in all sports.

I hate to get into the aspect of kids not wanting to put the miles in to become a state-caliber runner, but it’s true. Maybe long distance running is more desirable for us older people. As a teenager, I never had any great desire to get out and run.

But, credit to those kids that are at

least out for cross country. There is not better sport for fitness and camaraderie among ever all competitors.

Injuries Hamper Hawks The already depleted Oregon football team had two guys on crutches on the sidelines of the Stillman Valley game, another recovering from an injury and still another home resting from surgery.

Even though the Hawks fell 29-7 to Stillman, they deserve to be recognized as a good football team. Don’t let the 1-4 record influence your thinking.

These guys play extremely hard, execute above average and are exceeding well coached. That’s not just some homer columnist saying that. That is what opposing coaches are quick to tell me.

In the first half, Oregon was moving the ball well and if there is one

person that epitomizes that hardnosed determination it is Dalton Hermes.

He a player for all sports and a huge asset to the school.

I left the game feeling proud to be a Hawk fan.

Mike Lalor was quite gracious in comments towards Oregon. The won-loss record doesn’t show it, but Oregon it representing itself well.

Congrats Katie Congratulations to Katie Erdmann of Forreston for her 1,000th kill last week against AFC. I learned a kill doesn’t necessarily have to be a hard-hit slam. It can be a little dink over the net, provided the nearest opponent to the ball can’t return it.

Compared to other sports, volleyball is a sport that has gained in fan popularity over the years.

The 13th Annual Autumn on Parade 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run is set for Sunday, Oct. 7.

One-mile runners will begin the day at 8 a.m. followed by the 5K participants at approximately 8:30 a.m.

Registration for the 1 Mile Fun Run is $10. Again this year, all participants will receive an Autumn on Parade 1 Mile Fun Run silicone wristband.

To be guaranteed a shirt, please register no later than Sept. 23.

All the same 5K amenities will be available again such as music, postrace food, and awards to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in 16 different age groups. The course is USATF certified and the race will be chip timed by Real Timing, Inc. Post-race massages will also be provided by Alpine Chiropractic and Natural Medicine, PC., of Oregon.

Strollers will be allowed on the race course, but must start after all runners.

No pets, bicycles, or scooters allowed on the course.

First Fridays is Oct. 5 at Moose Family Center

ENAG to hold art show during Autumn on Parade

Launching Oregon’s Autumn On Parade from five miles away – on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. - at the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center may not be the official launch, but it works for musicians.

Once again the Moose Family Center will host the popular open stage music show.

Musicians will draw for time slots at 6:30 p.m. and performances will begin at 7 p.m. and continue until all musicians, even late arrivals, have had their turn on stage.

A jam session will follow until it is time for the traditional closing with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The musical styles vary widely including country, bluegrass, folk, blues, light rock, and eclectic blending of multiple genres.

The musicians will be supported by a professional sound system engineered by Kent Anders.

Music fans are encouraged to arrive hungry and thirsty as the Mt. Morris Moose Club offers a food and beverage service.

Eagle’s Nest Art Group will open its studio at Conover Square Mall on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. during Oregon’s Autumn on Parade.

The group of over 60 local artists will have a variety of original art work on display, including oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings; drawings; calligraphy; glass work; jewelry; ceramics; fiber art and photography.

Large art pieces as well as smaller originals will be for sale. A wide variety of prints and cards will also be available.

This year’s show is dedicated to

the memory of ENAG member Karen Sellers.

To honor Karen’s life and her artistic talents. A display of her work will be a part of this year’s show.

The group continues to support Hands On Oregon with art for sale to benefit the work of HOO in the community.

The studio is on the second floor of Conover Square Mall, 201 N. Third St. in Oregon. All are welcome to browse and visit with the artists.

SAFETY EVENT

In an effort to increase awareness of natural gas safety, Nicor Gas is partnering with local fire departments in 53 communities across its northern Illinois service territory.

The annual public education program, now in its 13th year, will run through

the end of October and coincides with National Fire Prevention Week (Oct. 7-13).

“Celebrating More Holidays and Every Day� Barn Sale for the American Cancer Society was another success. As always, the support by customers was outstanding at Maple Hill farm, which was the home of The BREAST Yard Sale in Town. The four-day sale included treasures for every holiday, new and vintage items and many household donations. Weather was perfect for a sale rain mixed with a bit of sunshine. The final amount raised was a little over $3,200 for the American Cancer Society. Thank you Oregon and all the surrounding communities for your amazing support. There will be a day when a cure is found and you can say “I helped!�

She was born on Feb. 7, 1925 in Lanark, to Edward and Edna (Applegate) Sweitzer.

She married Harold “Hap” Genandt on June 29, 1945 in Mt. Carroll.

2018 Wellness & Resource Fair is Friday, Oct. 12 The Ogle County Services Network is sponsoring their annual Wellness & Resource Fair for adults on Friday, Oct. 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rock River Center, 810 South 10th St. in Oregon.

The event is free and open to the public.

Survivors include her daughters, Judith Genandt, of East Dundee, Patricia (Michael) Doeden, of Forreston; son, Dennis Genandt, of Lanark; three grandchildren, Michael (Janice) Flaningam, Melinda (Chris) Pate, and Kurtis Doeden; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Pate and Madeline Pate; a brother, Robert Sweitzer, of Lanark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 63 years, Harold “Hap” Genandt in 2008); four brothers, Oliver, LeRoy, Franklin, and Leonard; six nephews; and three nieces.

A service was held on Sept. 22 at the Russell-Frank Funeral Home, 111 N. High St., Lanark, with Rev. John Ewing officiating.

Interment was at the Cherry Grove Brethren Cemetery.

Sept. 19 Ronald Schaffer, 55, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for driving while license suspended. Schaffer posted $5,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Oct. 12.

Alfredo Garcia-Hueramo, 33, of Rochelle, was arrested for outstanding Ogle County warrants for petition to revoke and failure to appear. Garcia-Hueramo bonds were set at $1,000 (10%) and $2,441 (full cash) pending a court appearance. He was also arrested for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of an ID. After an investigation, deputies learned the vehicle was not stolen and the report was false.

Jaimes-Carbajal was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held pending a court appearance in front of a judge.

At 5:39 p.m., deputies responded to the intersection of Illinois 26 and Sterling Road for a two-vehicle accident with minor injuries. It was learned that a 2017 Infinity driven by Tammy Moran, 47, of Sterling, was traveling west on Illinois 26 when she failed to stop at the intersection. She then entered the intersection where she collided with a 2011 Jeep driven by Wesley Krueger, 38, of Polo.

Moran’s vehicle continued west where it rolled several times coming to rest in the north ditch. Krueger’s vehicle sustained only minor damage.

Moran was transported to CGH hospital by Polo Ambulance for minor injuries.

She received a citation for disobeying a traffic control device.

Krueger and his passenger Reanne Kurschner were uninjured.

Deputies were assisted at the scene

by Polo Police and Fire, along with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Pines Auto, and Dyer’s wrecker.

The accident remains under investigation.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE The Illinois State Police reported the following activities in District 1, which includes Ogle, Lee, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties and is headquartered in Sterling.

Sept. 9 Eduardo Chavez, Jr., 26, of Sterling, was stopped for speeding at 1 a.m. on Ill. 2 at Sauk Road in Lee County and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding. Chavez posted his driver’s license and $100 cash.

Jasper A. Williams, 32, of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, was stopped for speeding at 11:10 p.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 105 in Ogle County and charged with driving while license suspended and speeding. Williams was released on an I-bond.

Sept. 13 Stacie L. Williams, 36, of Rochelle, and Julio A. Cruz, 36, of Rochelle, were stopped at 10:59 a.m. after a trooper observed them speeding and driving recklessly on Ill. 38 near Interstate 39.

The trooper discovered they were involved in a domestic dispute and Williams was chasing Cruz.

They were both charged with reckless driving, street racing, speeding, improper lane usage, passing vehicles on the shoulder, following too closely, disobeyed traffic control signal, failure to signal when changing lanes, and no insurance.

Cruz was also charged with civil possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Both were released on I-bonds.

Sept. 14 Daniel E. Flynn, 32, of Roy, Utah, was stopped for improper lane usage and operating an electronic communication device while driving at 9:50 a.m. on Interstate 39 southbound at milepost 94 in Lee County and charged with driving while license suspended, improper lane usage and operating an electronic communication device while driving. Flynn was released on an I-bond.

Sept. 16 Miranda S. Lee, 34, of Dixon, was stopped at 12:59 a.m. on U.S. 30 and Moline Road in Whiteside County following an area-wide radio broadcast report of subjects fighting in the vehicle.

Lee was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and released on an I-bond.

Chad A. Burkhart, 44, of Ashton, was stopped for improper lane usage at 10:32 p.m. on Ill. 38 at Gurler Road in Lee County and charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, and illegal transportation of alcohol. Burkhart was transported to the Lee County Jail.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 12 At 7 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash that occurred at the intersection of West Washington and Third Streets involving a 2003 Buick driven by Edward E. Cole, 71, of Fulton, and a 2011 Acura driven by Andrew D. Gonzalez, 26, of Lanark. Cole was issued a citation for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Sept. 13 At 7:15 p.m., police investigated a traffic crash that occurred earlier in the day at approximately 6:30 a.m. at the intersection of River Road and East Washington Street where an unknown make/ model of semi- truck struck a 2005 Pontiac driven by Ashley M. Paddie, 27, of Mt. Morris. Anyone having any information regarding this incident, please contact the Oregon Police Department

Sept. 17 At 7:30 a.m., police took one 16-yearold male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of being a runaway. The juvenile was released into a parent’s custody.

Riley J. Birnbaum, 16, Oregon, was issued a citation at 3:05 p.m. for speeding, 48 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred at the intersection of Hawk Drive and Adams Street.

At 4:56 p.m., police responded to the intersection of River Road and East Washington Street where a 2005 Chevrolet driven by Amber L. Koeller, 25, Chana, struck the stop sign at this location. No citations were issued.

Lenell M. Gray, 35, of Rockford, was arrested at 5:39 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Gray was also issued a citation for operating a vehicle with an expired registration. Gray was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These

Sept. 22 Nicholas W. Henson, 18, of Rochelle, was arrested at 10:17 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a traffic violation.

Henson was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

One parking ticket and three verbal/ written warnings were issued from Sept.

17 through Sept. 23.
