BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Bison were once again the stars at the annual Autumn on the Prairie festival Saturday at the Nachusa Grasslands.

By noon, nearly 360 people had taken wagon tours to see the herd that has grown from 30 to 130 in the last four years, and at least 100 more already had their tickets.

“The bison were very close. We had to stop for them — they were right on the path,” said one rider excitedly as she came back from the ride out into the prairie.

Bison booth volunteer LuAnn McFadden said visitors were getting a good look at the shaggy residents of the Grasslands.

“The bison are very familiar with the tractors [pulling the wagons. Sometimes if the staff needs the check to herd over, they will take them treats,” she said. “So the bison will sometimes come up to the tractors.”

Bill Kleiman, restoration project director at the Grasslands, said the event drew an estimated 800 people, 670 of whom took bison tours.

Temperatures approaching 90 degrees by mid-afternoon under almost cloudless skies didn’t appear to discourage the crowd.

“It was warm, but the event went off very well,” Kleiman said.

Under the many tents sheltering displays and vendors, 3-year-old Gideon Majka-Lauterbach, of Brookfield, was fascinated with a glass case of raptor eggs.

“Mom, mom, look at that!” he said, tugging on her sleeve.

His mother Megan Lauterbach said friends who live in Amboy recommended the festival.

Many displays were geared especially for kids and were accompanied by signs reading “Yes, touch.”

Youngsters could handle the furs and skeletons of prairie wildlife, including foxes, raccoons, coyotes, and skunks.

Volunteer Mark Herman, of Oregon, said the crowd started coming an hour before the 10 a.m. opening.

“They were here well before we opened,” he said with a grin.

Rose Avey, of Mt. Morris, was taking in the Native American lore offered by storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis, of St. Charles.

“I come whenever I can. I enjoy seeing everything here and the kettle corn,” she said, holding up a bag. “It’s beautiful day.”

Members of the Rock River Painters Guild were set up on a hill, the perfect vantage point for painting the prairie in full fall dress.

“We had the buffalo right out there a little bit ago,” said Jan Harvey, of Dixon.

Cindy Winterfield, of Lost Lake, said she comes every year to paint.

“It’s just beautiful and I’m a nature lover,” she said.

Elsewhere, volunteers were leading hikes, and visitors could take self-guided tours through the prairie, see live raptors, or try a bison burger at the food tent.

Kleiman said the efforts of the almost 90 volunteers and vendors made the day go smoothly.

Adding bison to the Grasslands in 2014 has increased attendance at Autumn on the Prairie since then he said.

“We peaked that first year with 1,500,” he said.

Melody Foster, 9, of DeKalb, was on one of the late-afternoon tours where 25-30 bison walked right by the wagons, noisely munching on the rich menu of prairie grasses.

“There was one that kept going in front,” she said. “It was like ‘wait who goes there.’“ “Yeah, one looked like the daddy and was making grunting noises as he ate,” said a giggling Natasha Bianchi, 9, also of DeKalb.

City council OKs emergency manhole repairs

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council took emergency action Monday evening to repair a manhole that’s caving in.

The council declared the situation at the intersection of Colden Street and Maple Avenue an emergency and waived the bidding process and then hired Civil Construction, of Freeport, to do the work at an estimated cost of $49,715.

A letter from engineer Mark Hansen, of Willett, Hofmann & Associates, of Dixon, said the cost could run as high as $53,000.

Polo Sewer and Water Superintendent Mike Mumford said the repairs need to be made as soon as possible. “The road is starting to sink around the manhole. We put a barricade over it to keep people from driving over it,� he said. “The only thing holding that manhole is the pipes coming into it.�

Several sewer mains feed into the manhole, which he said is about four to five feet in diameter and approximately 15 feet deep.

Mumford said the bricks at the bottom of the manhole are gone and have apparently washed away, probably into the sewer mains, along with eight inches of gravel surrounding the outside of the manhole.

He said he will look inside the mains to see where the material has

gone to.

Hansen’s letter said part of the cost is renting bypass pumps during the repairs and paying an operator to monitor them overnight.

Hansen estimated that the work will take five days.

However, he said, part of the cost will be offset by $9,000 to $10,000 in grant money form Rural Development.

Mumford said he is not sure when the work will begin.

Escape winter with trip to Florida next year

The Polo Senior Center will sponsor a winter escape to Amelia Island, St. Augustine, and Jacksonville, Florida, by motor coach in early 2019. Â

Wiersema Charter bus will leave from Polo on Saturday, Feb. 23 and return on Sunday, March 3. Â The cost for the nine-day and eight-night trip is $869 per person double occupancy. Â Add an additional $240 for single

occupancy, and triple occupancy is $849 per person. For triple occupancy, expect two double beds per room. Â The eight nights lodging includes four consecutive nights in Florida, 14 meals, eight breakfast and six dinners. Â On the way, the tour will visit the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Â

Once in Florida, participants will visit the Kingsley Plantation and then take a guided tour of Amelia Island. After that, it’s on to Fernandian Beach.

The second day in Florida includes a tour St. Augustine and the Fountain of Youth. The trip heads to Jacksonville on the third day for a guided tour and a cruise on the St. John’s River.

After leaving Florida, the group will stop at the Ocmulgee National Monument in Macon, Georgia. Â A $75 deposit is required at sign up, and final payment due will be on Tuesday Dec. 11. Travel insurance is available.Â

Polo Fire District to mark 70th anniversary at annual supper The Polo Firefighters Association will host its annual hog roast and open house on Saturday, Oct. 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Polo Fire Station.

This year marks 70 years since the founding of the fire protection district, and door prizes from area stores and restaurants will be given.

In addition to prizes, a whole hog and a freezer will be raffled.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at

the ambulance station in Polo, or from any Polo firefighter for $5.

Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will also attend the event.

Bring the kids to see the pink fire truck and get their faces painted by the Polo cheerleaders.

Polo firefighters will demonstrate the automobile extrication process. Polo Fire Department vehicles from over the years will be on display Oct. 13 at the Donations will be accepted at the firefighters’ association’s annual hog roast and open house. Two happenings prove it really is a small world

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society It is a beautiful fall day with the weather a bit warmer, the butterflies thick on the zinnias, the humming birds draining the feeders, and the mosquitoes thick outside on the porch.

Our family gathered this week to lay my brother to rest at Fairmount, and I was surprised how warm it was out in the sun.

Even if it is warm, the sun always makes one feel better.

Late Friday afternoon I had a couple visit Aplington House and the history museum.

They were from Peoria area and they were staying in Dixon for the evening. They were headed to Monroe for Cheese Days.

I remember the times we would go to Cheese Days in times past and sometimes it could be really hot.

It looked like they would have good weather this year.

I told them to get some cream puffs while they we up there since I remem-

ber them as being quite delicious.

I always enjoyed the Swiss dancing and coming home with some of the good Wisconsin cheese.

I was glad they gave me a call earlier in the week to see what Polo had to offer in the way of history.

As they travel, they always look to see what communities have to offer in the way of history.

I am reminding members of Polo Historical Society that we have a meeting coming up on Wednesday, Oct. 3 at the history museum. Our board meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting will be at 7.

Our program will be given by KSB Hospital so be sure to come to see what they will be talking about.

I have to get some things cleaned off this week so we can have a clean table for our board to gather as we discuss business.

Some of it was at Henry School and I still have not found room in the museum so it may take a while.

Where will I put the extra Native American information?

You know how many times we use the statement, “It’s a small world.”

Then Clare O’Connor, our granddaughter from Mt. Carroll stopped by today to see us on her way back to Champaign.

She has a new job as a dental hygienist in a big dentist office in Champaign.

She had asked her receptionist for the name of a bank and was given one close by.

The receptionist said, “I will call them and tell them you will be stopping by.”

When Clare stopped at the bank she was met by several bank employees.

One of the men said, “Are you my new dental hygienist?” Clare laughed and thought he was teasing her.

Then he said, “Where are you from?” She said, “A small town in northern Illinois, Mt. Carroll.”

He said he was from Mt. Carroll also. Clare thought he was really teasing her until she found out he really was from Mt. Carroll and his mother had been Clare’s fifth grade teacher!

The next morning at the dental clinic guess who was Clare’s first appointment? The man from the bank. It is a small world!

Well, this week in our family we have found out it really is a “small world.”

Our grandson Allen, his wife Mallory, and daughter Holly moved from Colorado to Homer Glen, Illinois.

Allen has a new job teaching high school math in Plainfield High School.

This week he had a visitor who stopped by his classroom to see the new “Obendorf teacher.” “Obendorf was not a name you saw very often,” she said.

She had taught in this school for many, many years and had just retired but was back subbing.

She was surprised to see the Obendorf name since she had been married to Larry Obendorf who had grown up in Lyndon-Sterling area.

Larry was the son of Don Obendorf, of Lyndon, who was Kenneth’s first cousin.

Kenneth and I had gone to Larry and Tanya’s wedding many, many years ago in the city.

Larry had died at a very young age and we had lost track of what had happened to Tanya and their daughter, Jennifer. It is a small world.

Polo Police Chief Kurt Cavanaugh reported the following information on Sept. 17 Sept. 10 Maxwell A. Simmons, 21, Polo, was cited at 6:20 p.m. for speeding 45 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. Simmons was released on an I-bond.

Sept. 11 Jeremy Lee Teel, 35, St. Augustine, Illinois, was cited at 7:32 a.m. for speeding 44 mph in a 30 mph speed

zone. Teel was released on an I-bond.

Sept. 12 Jaminson T.L. Gallegos, 22, Sterling, was cited at 4:30 a.m. for speeding 40 mph in a 30 mph speed zone and possession of cannabis, less than 10 grams.

Gallegos was released on an I-bond.

Sept. 14 Jarod T. Wiggins, 31, Polo, was arrested at 3:52 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant. Wiggins was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our returning friends, Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

After returning back to Polo, Charlotte and I put together the dinner for the football players and cheerleaders.

We owe a big thank you to the many cookie bakers in our congregation.

After the game, we fed a group of very grateful players, cheerleaders, and coaches.

On Saturday afternoon, I went to visit with my brother, Ben, his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett.

During our visit, I mentioned that I had tried to find someone to clean my gutters and downspouts.

I was pretty sure they were clogged which may have been causing my basement to flood.

This afternoon, Ben and Garrett came over to help with many house projects including cleaning my gutters. Their help was so appreciated.

They turned an overwhelming job into a completed task on my to-do list.

While I am not afraid to take on a large project, I am very grateful for extra hands to do the work. I am grateful for all of the people in my life.

God has provided the ones who lend a helping hand, who celebrate large and small victories, and those who provide a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on.

Jesus understood the importance of friendship. He is there with us each time we encourage one another, serve each other and when we lean on each other.

It is good to know He is with each of us in all things.

I hope to see you next week at our church in the country. Please come and join our family for worship and friendship.

The Village of Progress Foundation is seeking applications for a $500, one-year scholarship that will be awarded at its annual banquet on Wednesday, Oct. 17.  The financial status of the applicant is not a consideration.

To be eligible, the student must be a resident of Ogle County and be either a high school senior who is disabled or is planning on attending college and majoring in an area related to the disabled, or a full-time undergraduate college student who is disabled or is majoring in an area related to the disabled.

Applications must be received by Monday, Oct. 1, be completed on the foundation application form, and include at least three written references.  Those wishing an application should call the Village of Progress at 815-732-2126.

Attention kids! Make a scarecrow in workshop Oregon Park District, Village of Progress teaming up for event The Oregon Park District and the Village of Progress have teamed up to offer a creative, crafting class for ages kindergarten through third grade with an adult.

All classes are held on days off school and allows children to express their creativity and create projects out of recycled materials with consumers and staff from the Village of Progress, Oregon.

All classes will be held in the VOP workshop at 710 S. 13th Street, off of Pines Road, Oregon.

Kids will be working alongside people with developmental disabilities to create a season project that can be used to decorate their home. Each participant must be accompanied by an adult.

The first class will be held on Friday, Oct. 5 from 9:30-11 a.m.

Children will be making a scarecrow for decorating. Cost is $6 for residents of the Oregon Park District and $7 for non-residents.

The deadline to register is Sept. 28.

Other classes offered this winter include a snowman wall/door decoration on Jan. 18 and Valentine picture frame on Feb. 14.

These classes will offer a creative, fun experience for both child and adult.

Meeting set on solar farms

Classes will be held Sept. 26 & Oct. 10 Serenity Hospice and Home is offering a volunteer training course this fall. The course will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26 and Wednesday, Oct. 10 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Serenity Home, 1658 S. Ill. 2, Oregon.  The class will include some hours of self-paced learning at home.

The Ogle County Planning & Zoning Committee will hold a special meeting on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. in Room 317 at the Ogle County Courthouse, 105 S. Fifth St., Oregon, to discuss the regulation of solar farms in the county.

Polo takes the game 28-20

Already shorthanded, Polo was dealt a severe blow early in the second quarter of its game with Freeport Aquin when Brady Webb had to leave the game with a shoulder injury.

Then on the very next play, Aquin quarterback William Gustafson ran 47 yards for a touchdown and 14-7 Bulldog lead.

With the Marcos’ chances looking bleak, it was Tucker Mumford to the rescue.

Filling in for Webb as feature back, Mumford rushed for 107 yards on 19 carries, including a 7-yarder to give his team a fourth-quarter 28-20 lead.

“Once we got up 28-20, that fired us up,” said lineman AJ Williams, who had a yeoman’s game on both sides of the ball.

That held up for the win, with Mumford intercepting Gustafson on fourth down, after Aquin had a first-and-goal situation with two minutes left.

“It was big shoes to fill,” Mumford said. “In the second half, we came out with a purpose.”

What really saved Polo was quarterback Braiden Soltow converting on fourth down for a pair of touchdowns.

“Number 11 (Soltow) put the team on his back.

He’s gutsy and made the plays when he had to,” Aquin coach Broc Kundert said.

With Webb being bottled up at the line of scrimmage on Polo’s opening drive, Soltow went to air and was 3-for-3 passing to start out. However, an interception stopped things at the 7-yard line.

Mumford nearly tackled Gustafson for a safety, but Polo would soon get the ball back on a punt.

A fourth-down, 31-yard pass from Soltow to Jace Coffey tied the game 7-7 late in the first quarter.

“Braiden knows where to put the football, whether it’s running or throwing it,” Polo coach Jeff Bumstead said.

On another fourth down, it was Mumford going one yard to make it 14-14. Mumford and Soltow carried the bulk of load on 10 straight runs.

Polo missed a huge opportunity to increase the lead after Aquin failed to cover Casey Thacker’s long, angled kick off and Ethan Phillips recovered it at the 5-yard line. Phillips also gave the Marcos a boost with his punting.

“That was very disappointing to not use the field position we got on the kickoff,” Bumstead said. “Casey Thacker had a great game for us.”

The Bulldogs then went on an 80-yard drive, punctuated by an NFL-style 41 TD pass from Gustafson and Ty Stykel, two of several sophomores playing key roles for both sides.

One key stat from the first half was Polo running 40 plays to only 14 for Aquin, possibly wearing the visitors down with the second half upcoming.

“Parker was super fast on defense and Faivre sniffed out that screen,” Bumstead said. “The sophomores filled big spots.”

With Soltow and Mumford cracking off long runs, Polo took the lead for good at 21-20. Soltow made it three fourth-down conversions in a row for touchdowns on a 2-yard run.

“We’ve been getting our ass kicked by them lately,” Soltow said. “This was a revenge game.

Everybody stepped up for us when we lost our main man Brady.”

Aquin tried a fake punt on the next drive, but Phillips and Mumford were right on top of the receiver to break up the play.

On the final scoring drive, it was a perfectly thrown 21-yard pass on third-and-long from Soltow to Phillips (5-65 receiving) that kept it alive before Mumford’s score.

Gustasfon had 134 rushing yards in the first half, but could only manage 31 in the second, with Coffey and Thacker sacking the elusive QB

for a big loss just before Mumford’s interception sealed the game.

Polo got in a hole early when Gustafson ran untouched for a 62-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage.

“With Brady Webb likely out for the year with a separated shoulder, we need kids to grow up fast,” said Bumstead, who called the win the most gratifying he’s had. “We didn’t play scared. We were aggressive and resilient.”

Polo finished with 308 yards of offense with Aquin at 279. The major difference was in plays run – 65 for Polo to 37 for Aquin.

“When we decided to go to 8-man football, people thought we were done,” Bumstead said. “We showed what real football was tonight. It was a beautiful win.”

With four possible NUIC Upstate wins the rest of the way, Polo is on target for a 6-3 record. Having heavyweights Milledgeville and Orangeville out of the way helps.

This week, Polo travels to 0-4 Warren.

“To start 3-1 is huge,” said Bumstead, knowing how critical the Orangeville and Aquin wins are.

“This is a confidence boost.”

EPC rolls past Cardinals at Forreston Field Cards fall 34-8 to Catz, Cards 2-2 for the season

BY BRIAN WEIDMAN bweidman@saukvalley.com The Forreston Cardinals have administered many beatings to their NUIC Northwest brethren in recent years.

On Sept. 14, it was the Cardinals who were on the receiving end of one, courtesy of Eastland-Pearl City.

The Wildcatz played some suffocating defense and were efficient on offense on their way to a 34-8 victory before a stunned crowd at Forreston Field.

“This feels great,” senior running back Jayden Kempel said. “This is the first time I’ve ever beat Forreston in my high school career. It’s what we’ve wanted to do ever since freshman year all the way up to here. It’s great to do it senior year on their field.”

EPC (4-0, 4-0) scored on its first two possessions with drives of 55 and 66 yards. The Wildcatz were a perfect 5-for-5 on fourth-down conversions in that stretch, and both marches were capped off by touchdown runs by Kempel.

Forreston (2-2, 2-2) scored on its first possession, as a 59-yard drive ended with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Rogers to Dom Christensen. That gave the Cardinals an 8-6 lead, but their offense did virtually nothing the rest of the game.

EPC’s defense allowed Forreston just 178 yards of total offense.

“They came out hot, but we started wearing them down on offense,” EPC coach Jared McNutt said. “They got tired on defense too. [Assistant] coach [Riley] Asche does a great job of getting those defensive guys in the right position. We’ve got a lot of special athletes in the back end, let alone up front.”

It was a third-place finish for the Oregon golf team at the Sally Wessels Invitational on Saturday at Sunset Golf Course in Mt. Morris.

“We’re rounding into shape,” Oregon coach Jim Spratt said.

“We just need to put all the scores together. Not everyone is the best on the same day. It’s sporadic.”

Adam Merrill carded an 83 to place sixth individually.

“Adam’s finally getting his game back,” Spratt said. “He was having problems keeping the ball in the fairway. It’s coming around.”

Backing him up was Jackson Buck who has been on a hot streak lately. Buck had an 88, good for 12th and had a 37 at Silver Ridge the week before in winning medalist honors at a triangular.

“Jackson has a precision game going for him,” Spratt said.

Other Oregon scorers at the invitational were Jarrett Dietrich with a 94 and Case Sellers at 101.

Rockford Christian won the 11-team event with a 318, 34 strokes better than second-place West Chicago. The Royal Lions took the top three individual places, with Riley Hogan’s 73 earning medalist honors by a whopping five strokes.

“They will be the team to beat at conference next week,” Spratt said. Oregon edged Stillman Valley 366 to 367 for third.

Byron was sixth at 383 among BNC schools.

Polo had a 396, good for seventh and Scott Prerost (95) and Caleb Scott (98) were able to break 100. Lane Hopkins added a 100 and Hayden Bittinger a 103 for balanced scoring from the top four.

“I was happy at Wessels. Our goal was to beat two teams and we beat four,” Polo coach Don Reece said.

Two days later, Reece was even happier, as he had four golfer score in the 40s for the first time. Hopkins, Bittinger, Logan Albrecht and Lucas Hammond did that against Stockton on Monday.

“That was another goal for us,” Reece said.

Forreston was 10th at the invitational with 424.

“We were hoping to finish a little better,” Forreston coach Matt Hanley said.

Mavric Rudy had a 101, Lane Linquist 104, James DeWall 107 and Joel Ludwig 112 for the scoring.

“Mavric has been coming on,” Hanley said. “It’s promising with the others, but we can’t get down on ourselves after a bad hole. It’s a good group of kids and that have been working hard.”

Hanley hopes to have Mark DeWall back in time for either the conference or regional.

DeWall is recovering from hernia surgery.

The NUIC conference meet is next Thursday at Westlake in Pecatonica. According to Hanley, Galena and River Ridge are the top teams.

Erdmann reaches 1,000 club in win over AFC

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Volleyball is a team game, but Forreston’s 25-14, 25-9 win over Ashton-Franklin Center Tuesday night was all about Katie Erdmann.

Erdmann became the first player in Forreston to have 1,000 career kills. She reached that milestone on her first point in the second game with a center slam that no one from the AFC had a chance to return.

“Even though we lost, I’m happy for Katie,” AFC coach Kayla Van Buren said. “When she was younger, I coached her for two years in club volleyball.”

Erdmann, who is second in 2A with over 260 kills this season, had seven of Forreston’s first nine points in game one.

Needing only 12 to reach 1,000, she was at 999 going into the second contest, as a makeshift cardboard scoreboard indicated. Like Cubs fans putting up Ks for the Kerry Wood 20-strikeout game, the Cardinal student section dutifully tallied the points for Erdmann.

“She’s been invaluable to us the last four years,” Forreston coach Shannon Williams said. “She’s extremely talented and her teammates stepped up to help her out.

From start to finish in both games, Forreston dominated. Its strategy was to limit opportunities for Jaynee Prestegaard.

After Erdmann’s fast start, Alexus Houston scored two kills and Taylor Greenfield another for a 14-7 lead.

Appropriately, Erdmann closed things out with a kill for the 25-14 win.

“We had good options offensively and defensively,” Williams said.

Williams is looking for more improvement is keeping the ball alive at the nets and generating more offense from the middle.

“The outsides have done a good job,” Williams said.

Erdmann ended the night with 18 kills, three aces and two blocks.

Alexus Houston had 6 kills and Grace Carr had 24 assists.

Marcos’ football up off the canvas...again L

ike a prize fighter down for the count, the Polo football team could have folded. Not once, not twice, but three times the Marcos have gotten up off the canvas.

The first time was when the announcement was made about going to 8-man football next year. It may have been easy to resign yourself to defeat, as the numbers at Polo were no longer there.

That wasn’t the case, as this year’s team took the opposite approach and decided to make the most out of the final year playing 11-man, even as shorthanded as they were.

The second time came in the first game against Orangeville when they fell behind by a couple scores and rebounded late in the contest to win.

This past Friday against Aquin, Polo was carrying the weight of past

For the third time, Polo got itself back on its feet and scored a thrilling comeback win over Aquin. It was a case of scrappy kids playing their hearts out.

Whoever needed to make a play on offense, those plays were made. On defense, coach Jeff Bumstead made the right calls to have players in the right positions.

There was an orchestration of coaches and players coming togeth-

er for a common good. That was the only way Polo was going to have a shot against Orangeville or Aquin.

In the first half against a Milledgeville team that is proving to be as good as expected, Polo held their own.

The Marcos are in excellent shape to close out the season as a playoff team, which has become the standard of achievement in Illinois high school football.

Aquin could be in jeopardy of missing the playoffs. The same with Stockton.

It is wide open between Orangeville, Stockton, Aquin and Polo in what is shaping up to be one of the evenly-matched Upstate division races ever.

The only given is that Milledgeville will likely finish undefeated.

Like Polo, Aquin has low num-

bers, with only five juniors and six seniors. Could they be the next NUIC school to play 8-man? Their sophomore quarterback would make a great QB in that format.

With Polo and River Ridge going to 8-man and Warren co-oping with a Wisconsin team next year, the conference needs to decide how the divisions will be realigned for football.

Nothing has been finalized, but the talk on the street is that a geographic breakdown is in the works.

Whether it is north-south or eastwest, who knows?

It will save lengthy trips, such as East Dubuque going four hours round trip to Amboy this week. But, how will small schools like Orangeville, Milledgeville and Aquin feel about facing the league heavyweights?

The annual North Central Illinois Solar Tour will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Sept. 10 Officers responded to a possession of tobacco complaint at the Oregon High School. At 6:51 p.m., during a follow-up to the above call, police issued a notice to appear to a male juvenile, 16, of Oregon, for violating Section 6-85.

Tobacco/(e) cigarette smoking by minor prohibited.

This violation occurred in the 200 block of South 10th Street.

Sept. 11 Mina Rocha, 66, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 2:30 p.m. for having a dog running at large. This violation occurred in the 700 block of South Second Street.

At 10:14 p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 500 block of South Ninth Street resulting in the arrest of Thomas J. O’Neal, Jr., 25, of Oregon, for disorderly conduct. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Sept. 12 At 4:40 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of South Second and Washington Streets involving a 2005 Toyota driven

by Michael D. Ramsey, 27, of Oregon, and a 2008 Ford driven by Kantime Kolani, 49, of Moline. Ramsey was issued citation for failure to yield turning left and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

Oregon officers responded to a possession of tobacco complaint at the Oregon High School. At 5:30 p.m., during a follow-up to the above call, police took one 17-year-old male juvenile of Oregon into limited custody for the offense of violating Section 6-85. Tobacco/(e) cigarette smoking by minor prohibited.

This violation occurred earlier in the day in the 200 block of South 10th Street. The juvenile was released into a parent’s custody with a referral to the Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.

Sept. 13

Misty J. Berry, 38, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 7:18 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 400 block of South 10th Street.

Dylan A. Phelps, 21, of Byron, was issued civil citations at 8:55 p.m. for the offenses of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis less than 10 grams. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Sixth Street.

Sept. 14 Skyler M. Kelley, 16, of Mt. Morris, was issued a citation at 9:37 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 100 block of North Fourth Street.

Sept. 15 At 1:55 a.m., Oregon Police arrested Andrew D. Stroud, 19, of Byron; Mitchell R. King, 19, of Byron; Autumn M. Hufford, 19, of Byron; and Madison E. Milburn, 19, of Oregon were arrested at 1:55 a.m. for the illegal consumption of

alcohol as minors.

They were transported to the Ogle County Jail from the 500 block of South Third Street.

Four verbal/written warnings were issued from Sept. 10-16.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Sept. 11 Jose Navarro, 38, of Leaf River was arrested on a warrant for driving while license suspended. Navarro posted the $15,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 28.

Ricky Barnett, 58, of Rockton, was arrested on a warrant for a petition to revoke. Barnett’s bond was set at $10,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Deputies investigated a report of a violation of bond conditions at 111 Main St Leaf River. As a result of that investigation, Tobias Whetsel, 37, of Leaf River, was taken into custody for a violation of an order or protection. Tobias was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending a court appearance.

Sept. 12 Daniel Wallgren, 37, of Oregon, was arrested at 6:55 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 2000 block of West Lights-

ville Road. Wallgren was additionally issued a citation for operating an uninsured vehicle.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

David W. Richards, 27, of Sterling, was arrested at 7:48 p.m. for possession of a controlled substance (x2), possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, possession of drug equipment and driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at Illinois 72 and Mill Road for a traffic violation.

Richards was also given civil citations for unlawful possession of cannabis, less than 10 grams, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A front seat passenger, Kasey Orr, 38, of Sterling, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug equipment. Both subjects were transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 13 Darrick D. Dickinson, 44, of Rochelle, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery.

Dickinson posted the $3,000 (10%) bond and was scheduled to appear in court Sept. 14.

Sept. 16 Zaipa Mtema, 20, of Rockford, was stopped at 7:27 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. Upon further investigation it was learned Mtema did not have a valid driver’s license.

Mtema was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was remained in lieu of bond. Mtema was also cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

Sept. 17 At about 12:18 hours a.m., deputies conducted a welfare check on an individual at 156 Dayflower Circle in Davis Junction. As a result of the investigation, Jeremey R. Phillips, 28, of Davis Junction, was arrested for disorderly conduct and criminal damage to property.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held pending an appearance before a judge. He was also issued civil citations for possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Kenneth L. Holt, 54, of Decatur, Georgia, was arrested at 11:25 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 8000 block of North

Illinois 251. Holt was issued an I bond and released at the scene.

Lavern A. Dearborn, 55, of Sterling, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Dearborn’s full cash bond was set at $3,088 pending a court appearance.

Richard Huereca, 45, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Huereca was issued a recognizance bond and released.

Huereca is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 24.

Melvin A. Jefferson, 28, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Jefferson posted $50 of the $602 full cash bond and was released. Jefferson is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 29.

Sept. 18 Arthur T. Carter, 47, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 2:28 a.m. for not having a valid driver’s license following a traffic stop in the 5000 block of North Illinois 2 for an equipment violation. Carter was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Marcia Lynn Mays, 48, of Normal, died at 11:32 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018 at OSF Health Care St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington.

Marcia was born on April 25, 1970 in Oregon, the daughter of Donald and Carol Grindley Dales.

She married Jeffrey B. Mays on July 24, 1993 in Bloomington, and he survives.

Also surviving are her daughters, Emily Mays and Allison Mays, both at home; and her in-laws.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

In Jeff’s words, “Marcia is truly the embodiment of humility. She never wanted attention from anyone. She just wanted the best for everyone else. She opened our home to anyone who would come.”

Friends remarked that it was clear that her love for Jeff, Emily and Ali had no bounds.

She was born on Nov. 13, 1926 in Forreston, the daughter of Jacob and Wilhelmina (Harrenstein) Ludwig.

She married Dale Russman on May 10, 1969.

ROBERT D. ELLIOTT Robert D. Elliott, 85, of Oregon, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2018 at Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, Mt. Morris.

Bob was born on May 29, 1933 in Oregon, the son of Edward and Hazel (Harnish) Elliott.

She was truly such a passionate person about each and every student and co-worker.

Marcia was married 25 years to Jeff and anyone who observed them knew they were each other’s person. They left such a legacy of love.

They embodied what it looks like to love in sickness and in health. All who observed their marriage were inspired on how to live a full life in the face of incredibly difficult circumstances.

The girls were the light of her life.

She did anything she could to help them grow into healthy, happy, compassionate women of faith, and she surely

accomplished that.

Even in the midst of all her health concerns she helped the girls not miss out on anything in life.

The girls have made many wonderful memories of Disney World, St. Louis, and Chicago as a family as well as simple memories of baking with mom or going to the splash pad.

She will be missed.

A Celebration of Life memorial service was held on Sept. 15 at 11 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, Normal.

Arrangements were completed by Carmody-Flynn Funeral Home, Bloomington.

Marcia and family had the most beautiful experience at Inheritance of Hope which helps families who are facing the loss of a parent.

In lieu of flowers, the family would love for any memorials to be made to Inheritance of Hope so they can gift other families with the same experience.

sister, Vera Johnson, of Forreston; two nephews, Alan (Judi) Ranz, of Forreston, and Galen Russel, of Forreston; and many step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; son in infancy, Lyle E. Bennett; stepson, Brian Russman; step-daughter, Wanda Bramer; two brothers, Alvin Ludwig and Marvin Ludwig; and sister,

Velma Scheaffer.

Funeral services were held on Sept. 19 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston with Rev. Lyle Zumdahl officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her name.

Bob is survived by his wife, Doris Elliott, of Oregon; daughter, Brenda (George) Noble, of Oregon; six grandchildren, Libby, Whitney, Eli, Alyssa, Josh, and Zach; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Phyllis Shugars, of Las Vegas,

Nevada.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Jody Elliott; four brothers; and three sisters.

We use the word aMAYSing to describe Marcia, but it doesn’t even begin to describe her.

Even enduring an eight-year battle with metastatic breast cancer, she fought with strength and dignity amidst great suffering.

Marcia truly showed people how to live a life of purpose.

She worked at Morton High School for 25 plus years as a special education teacher.

Co-workers could not comment enough how much of a difference she made in her students’ lives.
