Creative writing class revives Marcolite Class project allows students to be creative

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A long-time feature of the Tri-County Press is returning this week after several years’ hiatus.

For the first time in almost 20 years, the Marcolite, Polo High School’s newspaper, appears in this week’s edition on Page 4.

Betsy Scott’s creative writing class revived the idea a couple of weeks ago after classes began for the fall.

Scott said her students Summer Linboom and Patricia Plachno suggested the class create a school newspaper, and she was receptive.

“I was in a creative writing class in high school and we did a newspaper,” she said.

Scott discussed the plan with PHS Principal Andy Faivre, who told her about the newspaper published bi-weekly in the Tri-County Press when he was in high school.

“He suggested reviving the Marcolite,” Scott said.

“That just kind of sparked everything.”

The juniors and seniors in creative writing were busy at their laptops Tuesday morning, hoping to finish the first issue by the end of class.

Council meeting canceled The Polo City Council canceled its regular meeting set for Tuesday, Sept. 4 due to a lack of business to conduct.

The council will meet on Monday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the city hall, 115 S. Franklin Ave. The meeting is open to the public.

“I love it,” senior Zoie Sellers said simply.

“It’s fun,” senior Haley Melton agreed. “It’s one of my favorite classes.”

Juniors Jakob Kindle and Gabriel Boothe were working on jokes and riddles.

Kindle said they had hoped to submit cartoons but ran out of time for the first issue.

“It’s interesting, it’s kind of fun,” he said. “This class is allowing me to be creative.”

Faivre, a 1995 PHS graduate, said the school newspaper was done by a club, rather than a class, during his years in school.

IN BRIEF Sign up now for chili cook-off The annual chili cook-off, sponsored by the Polo Chamber of Commerce, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 from 12 to 3 p.m. at Louise Quick Park at the corner of Mason Street and Franklin Avenue in downtown Polo.

The fee to enter two chilis is $35 and $10 each additional pot of chili in advance or $45 on the day

of the event.

Persistent storms bring a foot of rain to the area

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Round after round of heavy rain for the last week has put area rivers and streams out of their banks across Ogle County.

By Monday afternoon as much as a foot of rain had fallen over some of the area.

According to the National Weather Service, the Rock River at Byron hit flood stage of 13 feet early Tuesday morning, and, with more rain in the forecast, is expected to rise to 15 feet by the time the storms let up on Sunday.

Ogle County Chief Deputy Sheriff Danny White said that low-lying areas like Rock River Terrace and Irwin Acres south of Byron, Brooks Isle near Oregon, and the Murray Subdivision near Grand Detour were filling with water, but so far no evacuation plan was in effect.

“I’m not sure about the evacuation level,” he said Tuesday afternoon. “I think people are trying to maintain what they have.”

A no wake order, which limits the speed of water craft to five miles per hour, went into effect Monday on the Rock River through the county.

Further upstream in Winnebago County and Rock County, Wisconsin, the no wake order was issued over the weekend.

The Rock River Sweep set for Sept. 8 was canceled because of the high water

and predicted storms.

Heavy rain began moving through the county late Aug. 28 into Aug. 29.

The storms resumed with determination on Aug. 31 and continued through Monday afternoon.

Although heavy rain was the main factor in the storms, some strong winds also came with them, bringing down trees and tree limbs.

A tornado was sighted north of Adeline on Monday but no damage was reported.

Saturated ground created puddles and ponding nearly everywhere.

The group campground at White Pines State Park was temporarily closed Saturday night when the Pine and Spring Creeks flooded portions of the park.

The Leaf River came out of its banks late Saturday night, spilling water into nearby fields and basements.

Pond Road had the north side of the Village of Leaf River was underwater and closed to traffic by early Sunday morning.

Leaf River Maintenance Supervisor Cam McGill was running pumps round the clock at the village’s wastewater treatment plant and low-lying downtown to keep sewer mains from being overwhelmed.

After clearing off late Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, the NWS forecast called for more storms from Tuesday afternoon through Saturday night.

The Meg is a suspense filled flick that takes place in the South Pacific region of the ocean.

Lead actor Jason Statham plays Jonas Taylor, a PTSD afflicted diver that has encountered the Meg before the events in the movie take place.

He sets off on a mission to rescue marine biologists that were trying to study a hidden layer of the ocean.

This allows a Megalodon, a once thought extinct ancestor to all sharks, out into open water.

Overall, The Meg is an okay

movie with an okay cast. While having an interesting plot, the execution in the directing and the scenes that were left in the final cut made the movie just passable.

There are dozens of shark movies out there, and while none can leave the impact Jaws had in level of storytelling and keep-you-on-the-edge-of-yourseat suspense, they can try harder to make a more well rounded shark movie.

Having scenes of dialogue that seemingly never ended here and there also hurt the movie.

When it comes to shark mov-

ies, viewers want to see the shark.

While over exposing the creature would ruin suspense, not showing it enough upsets those that came to see the carnage the aquatic beast could reign.

However, the scenes that were enjoyable in this movie were very well done. Images of an ocean full of beachgoers and attempting to hunt the prehistoric monster rejuvenated some of the films lost momentum.

The final grade I would give The Meg is 3 out of 5 stars. I would recommend seeing this movie if you’re willing to have patience.

Adjusting to the school year is often a difficult process that can leave us feeling burnt out and left in the dust.

Many Marcos find themselves unable to hang out with their friends as much as they did during the summer.

My advice is to take a study hall. This will set aside time in the school day to focus solely on your schoolwork.

Now that you have time during the school day for your homework, you now have time to spare once the day ends.

What if you can’t take a study hall? Try and set aside time to

work without any distractions, as the more focused you are, the more things you’ll be able to finish.

If those options still don’t work, try getting a group of friends together and host a study group!

That way all of you can do your homework and get help on difficult problems.

The 49th annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive in Oregon and Mt. Morris will be held on Friday, Sept. 14 and Saturday, Sept. 15.

Last year $5,466 was raised by the members of Oregon Council 1092

On the environment, he repealed requiring energy companies to reduce waste and emissions, repealed the stream protection rule and barred the EPA from regulating greenhouse gases.

Where is he on affordable college/ trade career training and student debt? What are his ideas for investing in badly needed infrastructure?

The citizens of the 16th Congressional District have a choice. It will require change to move forward as a nation.

PUBLIC VOICE Democracy cannot function without respect Dear Editor, During John McCain’s campaign for President, a woman in the audience said she could not trust Obama because he was an Arab.

McCain responded, “No ma’am. No ma’am. He’s a decent, family man, citizen that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that’s what this campaign is all about.”

In my opinion, that response was as great a gift to our country as McCain’s military service.

It’s a long way from calling his opponent “crooked” and leading the crowd in shouting “Jail him!”

Crude verbal attacks and name calling make both a family and a country dysfunctional.

Another McCain quote is particularly relevant, “Our shared values define us more than our differences.”

We have been told to distrust our government, the news, the intelligence agencies, our allies, immigrants, minorities, other religions, and the results of scientific research - to name a few.

Democracy cannot function without the ability to reach a workable compromise, and that can hardly be done without trust and respect for those whose views differ from ours.

Russians must be calling for another round of vodka, reveling in their success at dividing us, as if we needed any help.

SSET 4 School supplied 125 kids Dear Editor, “Thanks” just doesn’t seem big enough to express how grateful I am to all those that made donations to SSET 4 School.

Does Republican Congressman Adam Kinzinger represent you?

What has our current Congressman done to represent the farmers, the retired workers, small business owners, union members and the many hard working people of the 16th Congressional District?

Adam Kinzinger voted for enormous permanent tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans, and very little temporary tax relief for the rest of us.

In 2017, Kinzinger voted for a GOP healthcare plan that would have kicked roughly 24 million people off their health insurance plans and eliminated coverage for pre-existing conditions.

A provision in the bill ensured Kinzinger would keep his healthcare plan as it exists under the Affordable Care Act, but repealed it for the rest of the country.

He also voted to eliminate the IPAB, an independent board that keeps Medicare costs below limits.

He claims to be the champion of Medicare access.

Heath restores recitation bench for Henry School

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society The storms keep coming, water keeps running, and I planted grass seed at the right time.

Hopefully by the time winter arrives I should have a better stand of grass since It was a little sparse around the new sidewalk.

There is not much going on at the museum simply because I am not there.

Bob is keeping watch on the humidifiers because when the power goes out, they have to be reprogrammed.

With this humid weather we have to watch what goes on at the museum.

We did gather at the Henry School

one morning to bring in the recitative bench that had been redone by Bob Heath. No more wires and beautifully redone.

It is very old, very fragile, and very long — six feet to be exact. It does not look like it was ever very sturdy and I wonder how many sat on it at one time.

I decided to research the reciting bench but found little information.

They would have two reciting benches per school with one on each side of the teacher’s desk.

In the “olden days” they called them “blab benches.” Everything was done out loud so it must have been very noisy.

It got the name of blab schools because of the noise the neighbors

would hear that sounded like blabblab-blab.

The teacher would read the lesson and the children would recite it back loudly. All a teacher really had to know was how to read.

One source said children would come up and stand on the bench, and I found that interesting.

This particular bench would not have held up very long. Six feet long would have held a number of kids and in my mind would soon have collapsed.

School desks were not invented until 1880 since many children were tutored at home.

If they did go they sat on benches and struggled to write on their laps, probably using slates.

So maybe this is a very old bench

that was used before they had school desks. This could have been used by smaller students.

Very few country schools are left so it is good that Polo has preserved the Henry School.

The bees are also being preserved since they are using the outside of it and the attic part.

They really do love the old school house and someday we think there will be a big pile of honey that will fall through to the floor inside.

We will wait and see.

We have attempted to get rid of them but nothing seems to work.

They have gone to school for quite a while now so they are probably smarter than we are and content to stay at Henry School.

POLO COMMUNITY THEATER

PACT to present “Into the Woods” Sept. 28-30 Polo Area Community Theatre’s next show “Into the Woods” will be shown on Friday, Sept. 28 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m.

The story from the book by James Lapin, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, follows a baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk.

When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse.

Everyone’s wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $10 for senior citizens (60-plus), and $7 for children ages 12 and younger.

Tickets are $10 each when purchased in advance by groups of 10 or more adults.

Advance tickets are available at Polo Sub Stop, Polo Public Library, and First State Bank Polo-Shannon.

Tickets are also available from cast members or online at www. polotheatre.org.

PACT will hold open auditions for “The Story of the Nutcracker” on Sunday, Oct 7 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the

Buffalo Township Hall.

These auditions are open to anyone ages 6 years and older.

Note that while not all roles will dance, dance auditions will be held, so come prepared to move.

Show dates are Dec. 8-10 and typical rehearsals will be held on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday.

Rock River Sweep canceled

Tutors needed for adult education in math, reading, writing, ESL

Mother Nature has put the kibosh on the Rock River Sweep, at least for this month anyway.

The event, scheduled for Sept. 8, has been canceled due to recent heavy rains that have increased water levels in the Rock River.

“You may have noticed the river is now dangerously high following the week of heavy rains, and more rains coming this week,” Terry Schuster, Oregon Together and Rock River Sweep volunteer said in an email. “There will be no Rock River Sweep this Saturday, Sept. 8. A decision will be made later this week whether to reschedule the Sweep on another date this fall... depending on how quickly river conditions recover. So please stay tuned.”

“And thank you to so many who had

already committed to help with this event! We hope to see everyone again later,” Schuster said.

Oregon’s Rock River Sweep focuses on cleaning the banks of the Rock River from Mud Creek Road to Castle Rock State Park.

The Rock River Sweep is an effort by many groups up and down the Rock River, from Horicon, Wisconsin to where the Rock meets the Mississippi River.

During the rainy days, while cleaning up excessive water, and while the storms roll on through the night.

For His faithful care, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Kent and Judy Nettz.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friends Kaitlyn, Laura, and Harper.

Charlotte continues our Faces of our Faith series with story of Lydia with an emphasis on hospitality.

This past Saturday morning, Jim Hopkins hosted the men’s breakfast group in our church basement. It was a well-attended event in spite of

the rain.

Joining in the meal were Charlotte Hoppe, Ron Baker, Kent Nettz, Dave Burright, John Engel, and Larry Riffle.

This past Monday evening, our church joined Faith Discovery Church to host the Our Table Community Meal at Faith United Methodist Church.

We served more than 60 people with lots of help from both churches. Our next meal will be last Monday evening in September.

Don and Vicki Hay have returned from a quick visit to Lewes, Delaware.

While there, they spent time with their son, Mack, his wife, Shea, and their children, Reef, Ellis, Remington, and Pippin.

Don and Vicki went to celebrate Reef and Ellis’s fifth birthday which was in August.

The family spent some time at the beach and enjoyed getting to know their newest granddaughter, Pippin.

Don and Vicki also spent time with Shea’s family with a family dinner.

This past Tuesday evening, our walking club was rained out.

We were back with Lisa Coffman, Karen Scholl, Suzanne Sorenson, and I making our rounds on Thursday evening.

We are all looking forward to seeing our sisters again at our fall reunion.

We are nearing the wedding celebration of Matt and his wife, Ema. The details of their special day are coming together.

The distance between our family members has been an obstacle while planning. We know it will be a great day because we will finally be together again.

Stephanie and Joao spent their weekend at the Minnesota State Fair. This annual event has been a favorite for Stephanie.

It was six years ago this week that she started college and moved to Minneapolis.

I certainly miss seeing her regularly, but I am very happy for the life she has created for herself.

Thinking back to when we took Stephanie to school for the first time, it was a leap of faith for both of us.

Stephanie embarked on a new adventure, not knowing where it would take her.

Pink Heals of the Sauk Valley will be in attendance.

Activities for children are planned, and a motor vehicle extrication demonstration will be performed by the firefighters.

I trusted that she would find success and learn from mistakes while living on her own.

Life would be much easier if we knew the final outcome of our decisions.

It just isn’t possible to see the consequences of our actions beforehand.

We just have to leap not knowing if there is ground below us. We put our trust in God and just go for it.

Not only are we trusting that God will allow that dream of ours to happen, we are trusting that He will help us through if it doesn’t work out.

We know that with every success and every failure, He will be with us.

I had faith that Stephanie would be successful in school.

She found her way into a job she loves and a place where she can be happy.

A small amount of faith can go a very long way. God won’t let you down when you put your trust in Him. Please join us next Sunday at our church in the country.

Oregon Lions Club holds annual Draw Down The Oregon Lions Club held its annual Draw Down on Aug. 23 at the VFW in Oregon.

The large crowd enjoyed snacks and fellowship, and then tickets were drawn from the barrel of the 250 that were sold.

Cash prizes included 12 $50, two $100, one $200, and one Grand Prize of $1,000.

All tickets were then put back into the barrel and drawn again for the door prizes valued at $1,970 and

donated by local merchants.

“The Oregon Lions Draw Down Committee wants to thank all the generous Oregon merchants who donated those door prizes as well as the people who purchased the tickets,” said club member Jean Hoff. “This annual fundraiser helps us continue to provide financial support to those who are visually or hearing impaired and to the Lions International Organization whose philanthropic work reaches worldwide.”

Eagle’s Nest Art Group will host a gourd art workshop on Saturday, Sept. 22 at Conover Square from 9 a.m. to noon at the ENAG studio, on the second floor of the Conover Square Mall, 201 N. Third St., Oregon.

Former art teacher Carrie Lay will lead the workshop and guide participants throughout the process.

The cost of this workshop is $15, to be paid on the day of the workshop.

Participants do not need to be ENAG members.

Supplies are provided, including completely prepared and cleaned gourds and all the materials for creating a beautifully artistic three-dimensional art object.

A work space will be set up for each participant with a variety of supplies, such as paints, inks, stains, weaving materials, and beads.

Once again the Mt. Morris Moose Family Center will host the popular open stage music show.

Musicians will draw for time slots at 6:30 p.m., performances will begin

at 7 p.m., and continue until all musicians, even late arrivals, have had their turn on stage.

A jam session will follow until it is time for the traditional closing with “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The musical styles vary widely including country, bluegrass, folk, blues, light rock, and eclectic blending of multiple genres.

The musicians will be supported by a professional sound system engineered by Kent Anders.

Alzheimer’s & Dementia Series Alzheimer’s Association and the Polo Senior Center will partner for a new program explaining the basics of Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Susan Sklar, manager, educator and outreach director, will be the presenter for this free four-session series at the Polo Senior Center, 101 E. Mason St., in Polo.

Pre-registration is required, all sessions are open to the public.

Friday night was perfect night for football A little lightning did not delay the action due to common sense

A

s I walked home following the Oregon and Genoa-Kingston football game, there was sense of satisfaction.

Though my team lost, it was a wonderful evening to be at Landers-Loomis Field.

For starters, and I say this ever year, the maintenance staff at OHS has the field in immaculate condition. Looking down from the bleachers, it was aesthetically pleasing to the eye, much like a work of art, should there be such a thing among small school stadiums.

There was a large and enthusiastic crowd. Credit to the school section for standing on their feet for the entire game and cheering even with the Hawks trailing.

Band, cheer and pom squads – it was all good stuff.

I particularly enjoyed the half-

SPORTS COMMENTARY Andy Colbert time intermingling of students from G-K and Oregon. It was a tradition started in basketball and will continue anytime these two schools play each other.

Great sportsmanship and credit to athletic directors Mike Lawton and Phil Jerbi for facilitating.

There needs to be more of this between schools at all athletic events.

With 16 varsity players, Oregon gave all they had. There is no shame in losing to a solid program like G-K. It was excellent sportsmanship exhibited by both teams, with no cheap shots or badmouthing. The coaches on both sidelines were well behaved, which sets an example of the kids.

Anytime a coach starts blaming an official, it signals to his or her own players that they don’t need to be accountable. When things don’t

go your way, it’s someone else’s fault.

An added plus that evening was an excellent fresh-soph contest, one of the best I’ve seen in awhile at Oregon. That bodes well for the future.

Several years ago, I remember covering a few Byron games with a kid named Chad Wilmarth playing fullback. What a pleasure to see him as G-K head coach and to reflect in on-going relationships we get to have as sports reporters.

Byron, Forreston and Rochelle all have head coaches I used to cover. I never covered Mike Lalor of Stillman Valley as a player, but have become good friends because of 20 years doing his games.

Had I covered his loss against Byron Friday, I may have teased him afterwards that he was spending too much time protesting solar farms instead of working on the game plan.

Maybe not. Depending on a coach’s mood, us reporters have to be careful about what we say.

Another 20-year guy that makes Friday nights special is Sam Ramirez. How many other BNC schools have a radio duo like Sam

and Mark Herman, who have broadcasting the same football team for that long? None, that I know of.

That’s genuine Americana on display - two guys in a press box telling a weekly story on Oregon football.

On a beautiful evening, wasn’t it nice to see lightning in the distance and not have to deal with a mandatory 30-minute delay?

The IHSA has gone to a common sense approach, allowing officials to make a judgment call on the seriousness of the weather.

I truly doubt if I would have been in that same great mood, had the game been plagued by stoppages for no good reason, other than Draconian safety measures.

With a volleyball tournament going on in a stuffy Blackhawk Center, it dawned on me why beach volleyball has become so popular.

There’s something to be said for having your sport take place in the great outdoors, provided the weather is suitable and Friday was just right.

Yes, Friday was just right for being a Hawk fan.

The Milledgeville Missiles would sure like to figure out why they’ve been starting games slowly for the better part of the last two seasons.

Until then, they’ll just have to settle for winning games on the might of strong second-half efforts like their 26-8 victory over Polo on Friday.

“It took effort. It paid off tonight,” said Milledgeville running back Carson Boyer, who rushed for a game-high 116 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. “We feel good, but right now, we’ve got to get past Stockton [next week].”

The final score tells of a relatively worry-free outcome, but it wasn’t the case until the Missiles (2-0, 1-0 Northwest Upstate Illini) scored back-to-back touchdowns in the first 6 minutes of the third quarter, highlighted by a 47-yard TD run by Cayde Gusloff on the second play of the half.

After Milledgeville’s defense forced a three-and-out, the offense went back to work, and Boyer punched in a 15-yard score to give the Missiles a comfortable 26-6 edge.

The outburst to the start of the second half was a welcome sight for Milledgeville coach Jason Wroble, who watched his team struggle to a 10-6 halftime lead, and Polo appeared ready to push the favored Missiles to the limit.

“We bring back a pretty solid core from last year, but just like last year, this group seems to always start off slow,” Wroble said. “They always get it together, but they just start slow, and we can’t figure out why. We’re going to have to figure out soon, or it’s going to catch up to us eventually.”

The game featured a fun little anomaly with each team recording a safety.

Milledgeville’s came early in the contest when Polo snapped the ball out of the end zone on a punt attempt. The Marcos (1-1, 1-1) bounced back from the gaffe by taking a 6-2 lead on a nifty catch and run by Tucker Mumford, who hauled in a pass from Braiden Soltow, put a spin move on a Milledgeville defender, and raced untouched for a 54-yard score.

Boyer made sure that the Marcos’ lead didn’t last long, turning the corner for a 35-yard touchdown on the Missiles’ next drive.

“We were trying to get to the outside because [the Marcos)]blitz their linebackers inside,” Boyer said. “I saw that I had one guy to beat and Nate Rahn put a good block on him. I was able to get to the outside.”

Lady Cardinals have tough schedule at Oregon

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com Being bracketed in a tough pool, Forreston got through the Oregon Volleyball Tournament unscathed on Friday with two wins, but lost Saturday to Durand 25-14 and 25-13.

The 1A state trophy Bulldogs ended up beating Oregon for the championship.

For Forreston, it was a bit of a disappointment after defeating Durand in summer volleyball.

“We could tell they wanted it more and they out-worked us,” Forreston coach Shannon Williams said. “Offensively, we had opportunities, but had more hitting errors than kills.”

In both games, Forreston started out fine. A pair of well-placed tips by Katie Erdmann and block by Kaitlyn Mateika kept game one tied 5-5.

Especially satisfying to fans of both teams at the Blackhawk Center was a well-played long rally at the 5-point mark.

Numerous saving shots were made by several players, with Durand finally earning the point.

A trio of Bulldog kills upped the lead to 8-5. The Cardinals pulled to within 12-11 on a tip by Taylor Greenfield and kill by Erdmann. Greenfield would have another nifty play on a misdirection hit for another score later in the game, and Erdmann would add two more kills.

That was all the offense Forreston could generate, as Durand outside hitters Katie Nevdal (10 kills, 8 digs) and McKenzie Damon (12 kills, 14 digs) took control the rest of the way with thundering kills. Marissa Kelsey added 24 assists.

“They are a very good team with a good setter,” Williams said. “We couldn’t keep up with them on offense.”

Forreston took a 3-1 lead in the second game on a kill and tip by Erdmann and service ace by Grace Carr, who added a tip the game at 4-4.

Durand quickly reeled off seven unanswered points and Forreston lost freshman Kara Erdmann for most of the game to an injury. She hit the floor head first trying to make a save.

“We adjusted well with our libero down,” Williams said.

Erdmann was able to return late in the game. Forreston pulled to within 13-9 on a tip and kill by Katie Erdmann. After that, it was all Durand.

“We went out with a lot of energy and were able to mix up sets,” Durand coach Molly Kelsey said. “Our blockers showed up and were huge aspects of the defense.”

Forreston finished the tournament in seventh place.

Cardinals fall 36-16 to defending state champ

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com In a dominating performance, defending state champ LenaWinslow showed Forreston why they are the No. 1-ranked team in 1A. Jumping off to a 29-0 first half lead, the Panthers survived a minor comeback by Forreston in the third quarter for the 36-16 win.

“It would be unfair to compare them to last year,” Forreston coach Kyle Zick said. “What I do know is they are very talented and you can’t make mistakes like we did and expect to compete with them.”

Bailey Cullor and Cailean Davids started the rally with a 40-yard touchdown pass before the half ended. With minus rushing yards in the first half, the Cardinals were forced to rely on the pass.

“We missed assignments and holes in the first half and Le-Win is too talented to that and expect to compete with them,” Zick said.

Garett Badertscher then tacked on a 2-yard run on the Cardinals’ first possession of the second half to make it 29-16.

After getting rolled by the Panther running game earlier, Forreston’s defense raised up to make two stops in the third quarter. A renewed Cardinal ground game then moved the ball inside the red zone, only to be turned away on downs.

“We still have some things to work on, but most everything is fixable, as long as the fight is there,” Zick said. “They completed for all four quarters and themselves a shot in the second half. We have a lot to be proud of.”

Isaiah Bruce, a converted running back, had a 62-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to effectively put the game away.

Sean Ormiston, who like Bruce is a junior, had nearly 150 yards in the first half alone.

Ormiston ended with 30 carries for 182 yards and three touchdowns.

Bruce had 110 yards on seven carries and caught five passes for 35 yards.

Forreston did make major inroads

running ball in the second half, finishing with 172 yards. Cullor led the way with 68 yards on 11 carries, while adding 106 yards through the air.

“Cullor played much better once he settled down, Zick said. “He has the talent and ability to do very well.”

Evan Kelsey was next with 52 hard-fought yards on 18 totes. Badertscher was held to only 12 yards on 8 tries.

In what could be the most crucial game of the regular season, Forreston goes on the road to Dakota, in a battle of teams expected to finish second or third in NUIC play.

The Cardinals have a 3-game winning streak against Dakota.

“To reach the goals we have, we need to play more fundamentally sound and aggressive in the first half,” Zick said. “This is the second straight game we’ve started slow and we can’t do that again this week.”

Board and Executive Committee.

Mario Chavez, 61, of Silvis, was arrested at 6:02 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license and operating a vehicle with an expired registration.

Chavez was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred in the 200 block of South Fourth Street.

Zachary L. Stanley, 35, of Oregon, was arrested at 9:06 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Stanley was transported to the Ogle County Jail. This violation occurred in the 300 block of Webster Street.

Aug. 28 At 4:38 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of South Second Street and Madison Street involving a 2005 Dodge driven by Uziel Chavez-Garcia, 29, of Rockford, and a 2013 Ford driven by Patti M. Gant, 27, of Amboy. Chavez-Garcia was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop or yield intersection.

Aug. 30 Colton A. Brooks, 26, of Lanark, was issued a citation at 2 a.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of West Washington Street.

Aug. 31 Eugene J. Dzwierzynski, 57, of Oregon, was arrested at 12:56 p.m. on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear on a domestic battery charge. Dzwierzynski was transported to the Ogle County jail.

At 3:34 p.m., police investigated a car vs pole traffic crash in the 100 block of West Washington Street involving a 2014 Nissan driven by Ellen K. Taylor, 56, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

At 4:53 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash at the intersection of Gale Street and South Fifth Street involving a 2012 Volkswagen driven by Morgan C. Miraglia, 18, of Oregon, and a 2006 Jeep driven by Patricia A. Robles, 55, of Oregon. Miraglia was issued a citation for failure to yield at a stop or yield intersection.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Aug. 29 Brett Bradley, 37, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for drug court sanctions. Bradley did not have a bond, but is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 7.

Pracey Walton, 47, of Freeport, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for deceptive practice. Walton posted $7,500 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 10.

Gregory M. Bradford, 27, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Bradford’s full cash bond was set at $2,820.23 pending a court appearance.

Shane R. Brogan, 21, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for domestic battery. Brogan’s bond was set at $25,000 (10%) pending a court appearance.

Brian J. Miller, 33, of Rockford, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His full cash bond was set at $1,922. Miller posted $601 and was released pending a Sept. 4 court appearance.

Shon E. Yarbrough, 40, of Savannah, Tennessee, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for contempt of court. Yarbrough posted $15,000 (10%) bond and was released. Yarbrough is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 21.

Aug. 30 At approximately 7:55 a.m., deputies responded to a one vehicle rollover accident in the 2200 block of West Montague Road. The driver and lone occupant, Deryl Beyer, were transported (by German Valley Fire & Ambulance) to Freeport Hospital for treatment of nonlife threatening injuries.

Dandre A .James, 39, of East Moline, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle

County warrant for failure to appear.

James’ full cash bond was set a $168 pending a court appearance.

Donnie J. Weeks, 27, of Loves Park, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. His full cash bond was set at $637 pending a court appearance.

Aug. 31 Taylor Crofoot, 21, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for retail theft. Crofoot’s bond was set at $3,000 (10%). He was given a recognizance bond of $3,000 (10%) and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 10.

Henry Contreras, 57, of California, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Contreras’ bond was set at $1,125. He was given a bond reduction to $50 and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 24.

Deputies responded to a one vehicle crash at the intersection of Pines Road and Ridge Road west of Oregon. After and investigation it was determined that Rogelio Martinez-Dominguez, of Chicago, was traveling south on Ridge Road and failed to see the stop sign at the intersection until it was too late.

Martinez-Dominguez attempted to stop but struck stop sign and a telephone pole in the process. He was not injured in the crash.

Martinez-Dominguez was arrested for not having a valid driver’s license.

He was also cited for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Martinez-Dominguez was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond. the Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Oregon PD, Polo PD and the Oregon FD. At 9:44 p.m., deputies along with the Lynn Scott Rock Fire Department responded to a single vehicle injury crash on Illinois 251 near Lindenwood Road.

that a northbound vehicle driven by Miguel Cortes, 46, of Rockford, left the east side of the roadway and traveled into a cornfield where it overturned several times.

Cortes was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Rochelle Hospital for treatment of his injuries. He was arrested for driving while under the influence and improper lane usage. He was and released on an I-bond and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Sept. 1 At approximately 1:44 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident in the 9900 block of North Kishwaukee Road. An investigation revealed a northbound vehicle driven by Kenneth Strong of Rockford failed to navigate a curve in the roadway.

Strong’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck a southbound vehicle being driven by Terry Newcomer (age not listed) of Mt. Morris. Minor injuries were reported. The accident remains under investigation.

Sept. 2 Tabitha Vanbuskirk, 23, of Dixon, was arrested at 1:14 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic

stop in the 1000 block of North Illinois 2.

Vanbuskirk was transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies responded to two separate calls of an unwanted subject at 2121 N. Everett St. in Mt. Morris. After an investigation, Trei Sanders (age not listed) of Freeport was arrested for criminal trespass to property. Sanders was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Sept. 3 Deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 106 N. Locust Ave., in Forreston. After an investigation, Jessica Engelkens of Dixon was arrested for domestic battery. Engelkens was transported to the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Christopher G. Jimison, 30, of Chicago was arrested at 11:40 p.m. for driving while license suspended and obstructing justice following a traffic stop on I-39 at mile marker 111. Jimison was also cited for improper window tint and failure to notify the Illinois Secretary of State of an address change. Jimison was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

He was a member of the Polo Church of the Brethren, Ogle County Farm Bureau for more than 50 years, and was a dealer for Crow’s Hybrid Corn Company.

He enjoyed farming, gardening, fishing, hunting, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.

“Gramps” loved to share the fruits of his labor, especially his roses and vegetables.

He was a faithful steward of the land his entire life.

Richard (Carla) Humphreys and Donna Peugh, of Polo, Doris Smith, of Dixon, and Ronald (Rosa) Humphreys, of Amboy; grandchildren, Diane (Jeffrey) Marsh, of Freeport, Daniel (Sarah) Humphreys, of Powder Springs, Georgia, Douglas (Terra) Drexler, of Polo, Carrie (Joshua) Ickes, of Paw Paw, Heather (Douglass) Paxton, of Alton, and Clint (Allison) Humphreys, of Yorkville; and five step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Dawson and Zachary Drexler, Chase and Jack Humphreys, Raegan Ickes, Ainsley, Beckham and Anistyn Humphreys; and seven

step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one niece, Rachel (Mike) Jones, of Oregon and their family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth on June 30, 2012; granddaughter, Wendy Smith; sister and brother-in-law, Grace and Francis Oltmanns, and niece, Cheryl Oltmanns.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center for the care and friendship given to “Dean-o” and his family and the staff at Unity Hospice for their compassionate care.

As requested no services will be held. Private burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Dixon.

Dean Hunter Humphreys, 98, of Polo, died peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2018 at the Polo Rehabilitation & Health Care Center.

Dean was born on Jan. 20, 1920 in Limestone, Washington County, Tennessee to George and Oma (Phillips) Humphreys.

He was a graduate of the Conklin school.

At the age of 18, he moved to Polo and became a grain farmer and fed cattle and hogs until retirement.

He and Ruth Joyce Hambley were married on March 25, 1944 in Dixon by Rev. William Thompson at the Church of the Brethren parsonage. They celebrated 68 years together.

The 30-minute presentations will be held at 7 p.m. at Nash Recreation Center, 304 S. Fifth St. The meeting is one in a series that will be held in various locations across northern Illinois and will offer information CWD’s effect on future deer populations, and IDNR’s efforts to control the

KEITH R. LUDEWIG Keith R. Ludewig, 62, of Forreston died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at Monroe Clinic Hospital, Monroe, Wisconsin.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1956 in Freeport to Marvin J. and Gladys (DeVries) Ludewig.

He married Marlys L. Buisker on April 9, 1983 in Woosung. She died on March 28, 2011.

Keith farmed and was an industrial technician at E.D. Etnyre & Co., Oregon, retiring in 2015.

He was a member of Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Eloyce (Theda Williams) Promenschenkel, of Crab Orchard, Kentucky; brothers, Gale (Nancy) Ludewig, of Forreston, and twin brother, Wayne (Cindy) Ludewig, of Forreston; sister, Donna (Robert) Orr, of Knoxville, Tennessee;and many nieces, nephews, great-nephews, and great-nieces.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents and wife.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 5 at 10 a.m. at Prairie Dell Presbyterian Church in rural Forreston with Rev. Donna Gericke officiating.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 4 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Forreston.

Burial will be at Forreston Grove Cemetery.

Patricia Marie Wiesner, 90, of Oregon, died on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018 at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on Sept. 2, 1927 in Chicago, the daughter of William and Florence (Rasch) Bryan.

Pat’s passions in life were her family and traveling.

Through the years Pat was a caring wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Pat was known as a world traveler and recently enjoyed her 18th trip to Africa.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Oregon.

Pat is survived by two children, Richard, of Oregon, and Claudia (Lowell) Wertz, of Kigoma Tanzania, five grandchildren, Richard Jr., David (Lara), Patrick (Christine), Kimberly (Daniel) Harrison; Luke (Kara) Wertz; and seven great-grandchildren.

Biak Cung Nung, 23, of Rock Island, was stopped Aug. 23 for speeding at 11:18 p.m. on I- 88 westbound at milepost 40 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, no insurance, and speeding. He posted his driver’s license and was released on an I-bond.

Surrounded by her loving family, Dawn S. Rogers, 55, died on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018 at FHN Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness.

Dawn Susanne Rogers was born on June 20, 1963 in Freeport, to Harm and Donna (Greenfield) Smith.

She was a 1981 graduate of Forreston High School and attended Highland Community College and Rock Valley College.

She married Toby A. Rogers on March 26,1983 in German Valley.

She attended the Silver Creek Reformed Church, where she was a member of the choir, the praise team, the Women’s organization, and was Pioneer Club teacher.

Dawn will forever be remembered for her kind heart and generous spirit.

Dawn opened up her home to anyone in need, willingly sharing everything she had.

One of her great joys was watching others receive the gifts she had chosen for them.

She was an avid reader and expressed her thoughts and feelings eloquently in notes and cards.

Dawn adored her children and grandchildren, cherishing the time she spent with them.

She loved taking family vacations, most recently taking trips to the family condo in Kimberling City, Missouri.

She relished being an aunt to her nieces and nephews who thought of her as a “second mom.”

Survivors include her husband, Toby Rogers; three sons, Aaron (Rebeca Panos) Rogers, Jeremy (Kayla) Rogers, and Kyle Rogers, all of Freeport; grandchildren, Catie, Peyton, Toby, Whitley, and Rylan; mother, Donna Smith, of German Valley; two brothers, Todd Smith, of Freeport, and Trent Smith, of German Valley; two sisters, Starr (Joel) Flemming, of Freeport, and Heather (Bryan) Politsch, of Forreston; father-in-law, Robert Rogers, of Forreston; sister-in-law, Jaime Adamany, of Naperville; 10 nieces and nephews; close friend, Adam Luy; and her beloved dogs, Remmy and Zoey.

She was preceded in death by her father, Harm Smith on Dec. 10, 1992; and her mother-in-law, Jill Rogers on Aug. 13, 2016.

Memorial services for Dawn will be private.

A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
