Volunteers at farm festival get surprise

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com Volunteers were in for a surprise Saturday morning as they got ready for one of the old-fashioned farming demonstrations at the 13th annual Farm Heritage Festival at East Jordan United Methodist Church southwest of Polo.

When they started to pull Dennis Ricklefs’ old baler next to a windrow of hay, John Hummel, of Dixon, discovered that one of Ricklefs’ hens had decided she had found the perfect secluded spot for a nest.

Three large brown eggs had been deposited in the bale chamber.

“It’s no yolk. We’ll be scrambling to get those out of there!” Hummel joked, drawing a hearty laugh from the other helpers.

Besides the briefly delayed baling demonstration, visitors at the annual event got a look at antique tractors and equipment, a threshing machine in action, and a blacksmith at his forge.

Kids could grind and shell corn with century-old hand-cranked tools, pet a calf and goat at the petting zoo, or try out a more modern activity at the bounce house.

Temperatures in the low 70s under mostly clear skies made for ideal conditions.

“The weather was fantastic. You couldn’t have ordered a better day,” said organizer Steve Venhuizen, of Polo.

“Everything ran smoothly and everyone seemed to be having a good time.”

The women of the church fixed and served breakfast to 200 people and lunch to a similar number.

Excellent weather, new activities, and straw art proved to be the perfect combination last Saturday for the best ever StrawFest in downtown Mt. Morris.

“It went great. We added the food trucks and antique mall this year and that worked very well,” said organizer Jeff Bold. “The crowd was much larger than it’s been in the past. The weather was absolutely stellar.”

StrawFest, with its straw bale races, music, blacksmith demonstrations, and mechanical bull riding, is sponsored by Encore! Mt. Morris and is the culmination of the two-week-long U.S. National Straw Sculpture Competition.

Ten straw sculptures went on display Aug. 9 on the downtown campus. The public was invited to look them over and vote for their favorites.

The artists competing also voted for their favorite. The winners were announced at StrawFest.

“We had more competitors than ever before this year,” Bold said.

“The quality continues to improve every year.”

First place went to Giraffe by Juan Zelaya, of Hoffman Estates; second was awarded to Rocking Horse by Fran Volz, of Rochelle, and third went to Eternal Peace by Bobbi Stockton, of DeKalb.

The winners were identical in both the People’s Choice and Artist’s Choice categories.

The U.S. National Straw Sculpture Competition was started by Volz in 2016 in Rochelle.

It moved to Mt. Morris the following year.

A community build was added last year when volunteers turned out to design a straw bison. This year they built a giant straw saxophone to highlight the live music aspect of StrawFest.

Bold said the committee has decided to set StrawFest permanently for the fourth Saturday in August. The event will be held Aug. 22 next year with the competition from Aug. 7-23.

If a container is not adequately washed before being discarded, it may spill its contents onto other items. If the other items are paper or

cardboard, they are ruined as far as recycling is concerned.

Myers is accused of patronizing prostitute

of Winnebago, owner of Chantilly Lace; she faces 12 counts of promoting a place of prostitution. The owner of Exclusive Lingerie, Ruth Miller, who had hired attorneys to fight the city’s closure of her business after the May raid, has since died, authorities said.

Smith, who is free after posting $10,000 of her $100,000 bond, is accused of providing rooms at Chantilly Lace to allow for prostitution from March 9 to May 23, according to the complaint.

No one was charged with prostitution, part of the city’s strategy to focus on those who buy sex or facilitate the sale of it.

The women described as prostitutes in court documents are listed as witnesses to the alleged crimes.

Hint of fall is in the air — just a little too early

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society There is a hint of fall in the air even if we do not want to believe it.

Earlier this week my legs just did not want to work right and so I knew it was time to get out the insulated stuff.

I already had an inkling with the flowers looking rather faded and rangy. Could it really be time to start clearing the flower beds?

The last of the “Music in the Pavilion” series came to an end and I knew better than to even think of sitting out for an evening.

But I went down the hill to get a bite to eat for us. I was looking forward to those little sub sandwiches and found hot dogs instead.

I had just fixed hot dogs at home the day before but I got some any way and a good salad.

I always remember how my dad would eat at the high school for noon lunch.

Then he would come home to find my mother had cooked the same thing for supper. We would always laugh about those things.

By Karen Merlak This summer, Charlotte has shared her thoughts on love. Looking around our world, we have a love of nature, love of neighbors, love of strangers, love of friends and family.

We learn about love from our Father and for His everlasting love, we are thankful.

Our church building and our excitement continue to grow.

This past Monday morning, in the very early hours, my nephew, Hayden Bittinger, and I headed to the O’Hare airport to pick up my son, Clint.

Clint has been enjoying a couple weeks of leave from the military base in California.

In the evening, Clint and I met my brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo,

Salzman and I enjoyed the time I spent helping in the kitchen.

I still use the recipe called “Kidney Bean Goulash” fixed in the Polo High School Cafeteria in the 1940s.

Shirley Pittenger Lucas placed that recipe in the Presbyterian Church cookbook and explained where it had originated.

It was a favorite of their family and was a favorite with my family as I cooked later in life.

I liked to cook and eat and I liked working with Mrs. Salzman at some point during my high school days.

That is probably why I headed out to the White Pines State Park to work for a couple of summers when John Maxson was in charge of the food.

I loved his orange rolls and you could find him in a little room rolling out dough for those delicious rolls and other goodies he made.

Our grandson Daniel loves going

to the Pines to eat and he likes the chicken pot pie. So when Daniel is here we head to the Pines.

Now Daniel this week headed back to school at St. Thomas in Minneapolis where he is training to be a priest.

The first of the year he will be going to Calcutta, India on a mission trip.

He will be doing some of the same work that St. Mother Teresa did as they feed the hungry, nurse the sick, and com fort the dying.

I am amazed at the work our young people are doing.

So our family will be hearing of the needed work to be done in India as Daniel keeps us informed.

Members of the Lutheran church are busy going on mission trips and they inform us of what needs to be done in helping others. It is good we have dedicated people to help the world.

A while back I asked if anyone had heard about the Polo Novelty Company and I now have the information on that business in Polo thanks to Walt Reynolds.

Walt’s Father, Merrill Reynolds started the business in 1945 until the early 1950s in his basement at home.

Walt said his father would go to his work during the day at the Reynolds Oil Company in Polo.

Then at night he would head for the basement and make toys to sell at Reck’s Variety Store in Polo.

Walt still has some of those wooden toys and some pictures of them also. They lived on North Franklin Street and the oil company was down near the fire station.

The father of Merrill was Walter C. Reynolds and he also was an inventor and business man.

He invented the rotary hog feeder for farmers in the area. If the farmers had a good barrel, Walter C. would give them the parts to make their own.

Ted Boddiger was given some kind of a hog feeder with Reynolds Company on the side and I wonder if that was part of Walter C. Reynold’s invention of years ago?

We do eventually find out about those businesses. Thank you, Walt.

Together, we celebrated Clint’s birthday. Traditional cake and candles followed at our home.

On Wednesday, I took Clint around to the new grocery store and to my workplace in Sterling for a tour.

In the afternoon, Clint and I traveled to DeKalb for lunch and a movie before making the trip to Wrigley Field for his birthday gift, a baseball game.

A Cubs win was an added bonus for his birthday gift.

This past Thursday morning, Clint and I left for Minneapolis, Minnesota, where we stayed with my daughter, Stephanie, and her boyfriend, Joao Vitor.

On Friday, Stephanie and Joao took us to the Minnesota State Fair.

We visited the animal exhibits including an animal birthing center.

There were brand new lambs, calves, ducklings, chicks, and piglets being born and hatched that week.

Our group enjoyed lots of fair food and 4-H exhibits before riding the Ferris wheel and returning home.

In the evening, Stephanie cooked dinner and we ate on the rooftop of their new building.

This past Saturday, our family spent the afternoon at the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

Stephanie and Joao took us to several restaurants and hot spots that they enjoy in the city.

On Sunday, Clint and I made the trip back home. I really enjoyed seeing and spending time with my children.

Clint will be home for another week with lots more activities planned with family and friends.

While the summer season has a full month to go, there is already talk of fall.

Pumpkin spice is becoming popular once again. Even though the upcoming season is one of my favorites with its brightly colored leaves and cooler temperatures, we seem to be rushing things a bit.

It is inevitable that the autumn season will come again, just as summer, spring, and winter come in their own time.

No matter how early we decorate with pumpkins, the season will only come when it is time, when it is God’s time.

As a child, I always had a hard time waiting for celebration days like Christmas or my birthday.

Despite my best efforts, I could not make them come any sooner than they did.

There have been times in my life when I tried to make events happen before I was really ready.

God knows when we are ready for new jobs, new relationships, and new seasons.

Sometimes it comes as a surprise and we are caught off guard.

It is important for each of us to remember that we have the love of God that protects and surrounds us.

We can trust Him. Each day, any situation, and in every season, we can trust God. When the time is right, we can move with confidence into the next phase.

For now, let us linger in summer just a little longer. Before we know it, the new season will arrive right on time.

My hope is that this week will be filled with blessings before we meet again for a time of worship next Sunday morning.

Our worship time is changing to 10:30 a.m. for Sunday service with Sunday school an hour before worship. Our church family welcomes you.

Ogle court team presents at national conference An Ogle County court team recently made a presentation at a national conference.

The New Horizon’s Problem Solving Court team presented a session titled “Rural Problem Solving Courts: Establishing, Sustaining and Collaborating� at the National Association of Drug Court Professionals annual training conference in National Harbor, Maryland, near Washington DC. The team was selected to present on this topic because of its success.

Ogle County’s Problem Solving Courts began with a Drug Court in 2009 and expanded with the addition of a DUI Court in 2019. Problem Solving Courts seek to treat the underlying cause of a non-violent substance addicted offender’s behavior through intensive treatment and accountability through the judicial system.

The well-attended presentation was led by founding drug court team members Resident Circuit Judge John “Ben� Roe and Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow, along with Ogle County Public Defender Dennis Riley and treatment provider Kevin Buss of Sinnissippi Centers Inc. Also present were additional representatives from Ogle County’s judiciary, State’s Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office and Probation. Throughout the presentation each member addressed the function of problem-solving courts from their perspective and emphasized the importance of establishing and sustaining a collaborative problem-solving court model. “Looking back over 10 years, and looking forward, the relationships of our team members is the key to our success,� Roe said. “We share the same vision, the same philosophy, but most importantly we respect and

Morrow also spoke to the audience. “From my perspective as state’s attorney, the focus is public safety,� he said. “As a result, I support problem solving courts in Ogle County.

By diverting nonviolent substance dependent offenders into comprehensive treatment programs along with intensive supervision by our probation department we promote public safety and save taxpayer dollars.�

From a treatment perspective, Buss said the presentation gave the team the opportunity to show the

strong relationship between the court system and treatment in Ogle County. “Positive outcomes are the result when there is integration between the criminal justice system and substance abuse and mental health treatment for non-violent offenders,� he said.

As the public defender on the team Riley said, “Our success locally has now been recognized on a national level and we are a model for other rural drug courts. As a defense attorney, I receive a great deal of satisfaction in seeing a non-violent defendant stay out of prison and then become a contributing member of our commu-

nity - holding a job, reuniting their family, and leading the way for others - instead of just recycling them in and out of the prison system.�

The National Association of Drug Court Professionals provides training to more than 5,000 justice system professionals annually at its national conference – the largest training conference in the world focused on addiction, mental health and justice innovations. The conference is specifically tailored to enhance the skills, leadership and training of justice system professionals at all intercept points, from entry into the system to re-entry in to society.

We provide materials and some guidance. Every volunteer and every student have different needs and strengths.

Joyful is a common reaction of the student when a volunteer walks into a classroom for a weekly session.

Practice reading out loud and being read to, is an invaluable experience.

It is pure delight to experience the

growth of your student over the years.

PUBLIC VOICE Oregon IREAD seeks volunteers Dear Editor, Being a reading buddy with a child at the elementary school is a very rewarding experience.

The IREAD program at Oregon Elementary School is now in its sixth year.

IREAD is sponsored by the Literacy Council.

We are again seeking community volunteers for 30 minutes a week during the school day.

Volunteers are assigned a child from kindergarten, and they continue with that student through third grade.

The premise of the program is children are learning to read from kindergarten through third grade and reading to learn from fourth grade on.

Volunteers needed for Rock River Sweep Sept. 7 Volunteers are needed for the 10th annual Oregon Area Rock River Sweep on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Organized efforts to keep the shores of the river clean and safe began 10 years ago in Oregon.

Similar river sweeps now take place in numerous communities across Wisconsin and Illinois on the weekend after Labor Day. This year’s Rock River Sweep will be held from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. with check-in at 7:30 a.m. behind Conover Square in Oregon.

Exelon’s Conservation Club, Oregon’s Boy Scout Troop, Oregon Together, Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, and Oregon Park District are only some of this year’s participating organizations.

The sweep will work to clean up the banks of the Rock River from Mud Creek Road to Castle Rock State Park.

Volunteers, boaters, fishermen, paddlers, landowners along the river, youth groups and other service organizations are encouraged

to participate.

White Pelican Canoe & Kayak Rental Inc., will provide a limited number of canoes and free shuttle service from the Castle Rock boat landing back to Kiwanis Park for people with their own canoes or kayaks.

Volunteers should wear long sleeves and pants and old shoes, and should bring a refillable water bottle to reduce waste.

Gloves, trash bags, bug spray, snacks, and water will be provided.

The Oregon Area Rock River Sweep is sponsored by RockRiverSweep.org, Oregon Together, the Oregon Park District, the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department, Oregon Together, White Pelican, Inc., American Rivers National River Cleanup, and Rock River Trail Initiative.

The final Friday night concert of the Mt. Morris Jamboree season will feature local rockabilly band DFS on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at the downtown Reckmeyer Band Shell.

The band is made up of four gents who love and live the rockabilly lifestyle, including lead singer Ted O’Donnell, Harry Euhus on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Nolting on upright bass and vocals, and Bill Englund on drums.

DFS was inducted into the Rockford Area Music Industry’s Hall of Fame this spring.

Numbers are up for some high school sports teams I n chatting with Oregon athletic director Mike Lawton at Red and White Hawk Night, I learned that the high school’s enrollment is only 380.

That speaks volumes about the demographics of Oregon and Mt. Morris and how that number represents an over 50 percent decrease from the 1970s.

The good news is that Lawton reports excellent participation numbers for fall sports. Last year, Oregon was one of the conference leaders with percentage of kids out for sports.

Boys soccer has enough for both a jayvee and varsity team, one of the few league schools to have that.

Volleyball always has a large turnout, with the bulk being freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

Over 20 girls are running cross country and golf has solid numbers for both boys and girls.

The sport most affected by numbers has always been football. In recent years, lack of depth has been detrimental to the Hawk program, and for that matter, many others throughout the area.

To compound matters, the IHSA will not allow players to be in both sophomore and varsity games on the

same night. Thus, the Big Northern will contest sophomore games on Monday.

Look for Oregon to dress several sophomores on Friday as back up for the varsity. At this point, it is hard to say how many or how they will be used.

Oregon has long been a junior-senior dominated team.

Freshman games will be played on Fridays, provide a team has enough players. About half the BNC teams will not field a freshman team.

Oregon is on the bubble and Lawton said it would be a week-by-week basis on whether they will have enough players.

In the NUIC, it will primarily be varsity only on Friday, with the fresh-soph to play on Monday.

Though the IHSA is trying to be safety conscious, this arrangement is putting a lot of extra time and driving expenses on fans. It is also more of a chore for schools to facil-

itate.

Unfortunately, this is type of over-regulation is a reflection of society as a whole. Why can’t we leave decisions on playing time to the coaches, whom I have more faith in them than a governing body?

8-Man Preparations

In driving home from church on Sunday, I couldn’t help but notice different configurations on the Polo football field. Its 8-man opener against Danville Schlarman on Friday promises to attract a lot of interest.

Schlarman has a pair of state titles (1980 and 1981) to its credit, but hasn’t played football since 2012.

The previous eight years, they had

only six victories against 66 losses.

Another 8-man newcomer is Flanagan, which qualified for the playoffs 13 of 14 years before going 1-35 the last four years. Talk about the bottom dropping out.

Flanagan does have the distinction of being the very first state football champion in Illinois, winning the 1A crown in 1974.

Many of the 8-man schools are in similar situations, with two others being reinstated and many others with losing records in 2018. Maybe the biggest thing offered by 8-man is hope.

A big plus for Polo will be having an experience advantage over its opponents.

September 2010. Earlier this year, 195 acres of the preserve was designated an Illinois Nature Preserve by the Illinois Nature Preserve Commission due to the high quality of the natural habitats found there. It is a superior example of a mature northern Illinois oak-hickory forest.

Lee-Ogle Transportation receives $25,000 grant

BY RACHEL RODGERS rrodgers@saukvalley.com The Lee-Ogle Transportation System won a grant to help alleviate transportation challenges for low-income community members.

LOTS was one of five organizations across the nation to receive a $25,000 planning grant from the National Center for Mobility Management, a technical assistance center operated by the Community Transportation Association of America and funded through the Federal Transit Administration.

The funds will be used to develop

Project Moving Forward, a collaboration with several area organizations and low-income individuals to develop and test ways to make transportation more accessible to those in need.

LOTS Assistant Director Kari Wolfe will lead the project and work with KSB Hospital, the Lee County Health Department, Lee County Probation, the Ogle County Health Department, Ogle County Probation, the Regional Office of Education, Rochelle Community Hospital, Sinnissippi Centers and the Tri-County Opportunities Council.

“Our project is bringing together

partners from health care, behavioral health, education, probation, transportation, and other community agencies, some of whom have never collaborated together before,” according to a news release on the grant. “We will also create performance measures to show the projected impact of our project, among other key indicators.”

Lack of transportation is tied to being an obstacle in economic, health, and social well-being.”

“NCMM recognizes the vital role transportation plays in all activities that support resident empowerment across the board; yet often

community transportation systems lack the resources and/or strategies to provide the level of mobility to residents that they would like to,” according to the release.

LOTS is funded by a combination of state and federal grants along with a local match. It provides more than 80,000 rides a year and services more than 5,000 people throughout the area, primarily for medical, employment and education purposes.

The Byron Forest Preserve District and Perks Ranch have swapped several acres of land around the Howard Colman Hall Creek Preserve located at 12749 North Weldon Road in northern Ogle County.

Doug Perks, owner of Perks Ranch and Byron Forest Preserve District Executive Director, Todd Tucker finalized the land exchange on Aug. 20.

The Byron Forest Preserve District traded a 19 acre section of tillable land located on the west side of their Howard Colman Hall Creek Preserve for 21 acres owned by Perks Ranch that is made up of a mixture of pasture, oak savanna and limestone cliffs located along Hall Creek adjacent to the south boundary of the preserve.

“It is great to cooperate with local land owners to put some tillable agricultural land back into production and to protect some significant natural areas” said Byron Forest Preserve Executive Director, Todd Tucker. “It was wonderful to work with Doug Perks and the Perks Ranch staff on this project”.

Timothy Dial, 34, Mt. Morris, pleaded guilty Aug. 23 to two counts of delivery of a controlled substance. He was sentenced to 180 days in jail remittable upon successful completion of 48 months probation and ordered to pay total fines and costs of $5,154. Four counts of delivery of a controlled substance were dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

Aug. 20 Jarrod Martin, 31, of Rochelle, was arrested for failure to appear. He posted $3,000 (10%) bond and is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 13.

Taylor Hilgen, 25, of Davis Junction, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies were called at 7:05 a.m. to 120 Azalea Ave. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail pending a court appearance.

Aug. 21

David M.A. Rivera, 42, of Kings, was arrested for domestic battery after deputies were called at 7 p.m. to the 6,000 block of North Illinois 251. He transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Brandi N. Richardson, no age or address given, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after a traffic stop at 11 p.m. in the 10,000 block of East Illinois 64.

She was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle, speeding 11-14 mph above the speed limit and improper lane usage. She was transported to the Ogle County Jail

where she was held in lieu of bond.

Aug. 23 Kyle Hogan, 20, of Sycamore, was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop at 12:07 a.m. in the 19,000 block of East Illinois 64 for a equipment violation. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Aug. 24 William Kreps, 61, of Dixon, was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after deputies responded at 9:03 p.m. to a single vehicle rollover accident in the 7,100 block of West Edgewood Road.

An eastbound vehicle driven by Kreps traveled off the north edge of the roadway and entered a cornfield where it overturned.

He refused medical attention at the scene and was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Deputies were assisted by the Polo Fire Department and EMS. Aug. 27 Leo R. Dempewolf, 25, of Oregon, was arrested for failure to appear. He was held at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of $682 bond pending a court appearance.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE The Illinois State Police report the following activities in District 1, which includes Ogle, Lee, Carroll, and Whiteside Counties and is headquartered in Sterling.

Aug. 7 Timothy J. Patzka, 49, of Aurora, was stopped for speeding on at 2:32 p.m. on U.S. 30 at Interstate 39 in Lee County and was charged with driving while license revoked and no insurance.

OBITUARY ANNA LEE THOMAS Anna Lee Thomas, 79, of Oregon, died on Monday, Aug. 26, 2019 at Pinecrest Manor, Mt. Morris She was born on May 8, 1940 near Polo, the daughter of Harold and Kathryn (Roos) Jones.

She graduated from Oregon High School in 1958.

Anna married James B. Thomas on April 29, 1960 in Oregon. He preceded her in death on July 31, 2007.

She was a former member of the First Baptist Church on Oregon.

She loved to read, go to lunch with her friends, but most of all spend time with her children, grandchildren, and family members.

She is survived by her daughter, Lisa (Tom) Porter, of Machesney Park; son, Sam (Jodi) Thomas, of Oregon; brother, Michael (Rachel) Jones, of Oregon; seven

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Aug. 10 Andrew W. Hayenga, 22, of Kings, was stopped for disobeying a stop sign at 2:15 a.m. on East McConaughy Avenue at Parkview Drive in Rochelle and was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol. He was released on an I-bond.

Aug. 24 Anthony R. Walker, 52, of Chicago,

was arrested during a motorist assist at 6:25 p.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 95 in Lee County. He was wanted on a Lake County warrant for retail theft and was also charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance (1.97 grams of cocaine). He was transported to the Lee County Jail.

All subjects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery near Mt. Morris.

Visitation will be prior to the funeral from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Shaw Media to purchase LaSalle NewsTribune SHAW MEDIA ILLINOIS Shaw Media has agreed to acquire the NewsTribune and the Illinois and Indiana AgriNews weekly publications from Catherine Miller and Miller Group Media, company leaders announced Monday.

The sale is expected to close Sunday. Terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition of the publications adds to Crystal Lake-based Shaw’s network of daily and week-

ly newspapers and specialty publications, which cover 15 counties across northern Illinois, as well as part of Iowa.

The company’s daily newspaper holdings include LaSalle County’s other 5-day-a-week newspaper, The Times of Ottawa, as well as the Telegraph in Dixon and the Daily Gazette in Sterling, the Northwest Herald in Crystal Lake, The Herald-News in Joliet, and the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb.

Shaw Media also pubishes the

Oregon Republican Reporter, Mt. Morris Times, Tri-County Press, Forreston Journal, and the Prairie Advocate.

Aug. 19 Daniel L. Rosenbalm, 69, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10 a.m. for a city code violation, being the trash/ rubbish/junk ordinance. This violation occurred in the 1000 block of S. 3rd Street.

Aug. 21 Rick H. Aschenbrenner, 69, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 10 a.m. for a city code violation, being the nuisance ordinance – sec. 6-102(9). This violation occurred in the 600 block of Madison Street.

Todd R. Martin, 60, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 3:37 p.m. for failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.

This violation occurred at the intersection of 5th and Washington Streets.

Aug. 23 At 11:11 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 200 block of N. 4th Street involving a 2015 Buick driven by Vada A. Rosenbalm, 90, of Oregon, and a parked 2013 Toyota belonging to Gerald M. Stauffer, 68, of Mt. Morris. No citations were issued.

Ralph Milliman, 66, of Oregon, was issued a city citation at 1:15 p.m. for allowing his dogs to violate the dogs running at large ordinance. This violation

Megan N. Bushland, 23, of Oregon, was arrested at 8:12 p.m. for driving while license revoked. Bushland was also issued citations for disobeying a stop sign and for operating an uninsured motor vehicle. Bushland was transported to the Ogle County Jail. These violations occurred at the 3rd and Franklin Street intersection.

Aug. 20 At 1:20 a.m., police responded to a domestic disturbance in the 300 block of Lover’s Lane resulting in the arrest of Robert J. Sutton, 29, of Oregon, for domestic battery. Sutton was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Russ A. Prejna, 60, of Davis Junction, was issued a citation at 6:54 a.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred at the intersection of 4th and Washington Streets.

Aug. 22 At 12:09 a.m., police responded to a disturbance/citizen assist call at the Franklin Street Pub, 306 Franklin Street, resulting in the arrest of Amy M. Luba, 30, of Dixon, for criminal trespass to land, resisting/obstructing a peace officer, and aggravated battery to a peace officer. Luba was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 8:02 a.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 1200 block of Koontz Place involving a 2016 Nissan driven by Tracy R. Melges, 47, of Oregon, and a parked 2006 Chevrolet belonging to Sherry L. Marnich, 54, of Mt. Morris. No citations were issued.

Vincent P.M. Tabor, 18, of Oregon, was issued two civil citations at 11:46 p.m., one for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams and one for possession of drug paraphernalia. These violations occurred in the 5th and Adams Street intersection.
