Nominations are open for the 2019 Polo Citizen and Volunteer of the Year Awards.

Each year the Polo Chamber of Commerce recognizes one Polo citizen as the Citizen of the Year and one citizen as the Volunteer of the Year.

Eligible nominees should consistently show civic leadership through volunteerism and service to their community.

Services provided to the community should be based on volunteerism outside of the nominee’s normal employment duties.

The citizens chosen will be honored at the annual Chamber dinner on Sept. 30.

Those wishing to nominate a candidate for the awards must fill out a form and return it with a letter describing why the nominee is deserving of the award and send it to the nominating committee by the Aug. 30 deadline.

After a months-long investigation, a Freeport man has been charged in connection with a Polo burglary.

Jessie R. Whaley, 38, has been charged with burglary, theft, and criminal damage to property for the burglary of the Polo Wash Center on Oct. 3, 2018 Polo Police Chief Jon Mandrell said Friday that he has obtained

an arrest warrant for Whaley, who is currently in the Illinois Department of Corrections serving a sentence for other offenses.

The investigation is ongoing as police believe more than one suspect was involved in the incident.

Mandrell said numerous other law enforcement agencies assisted the Polo Police Department with the investigation.

Best of Show winner at the 30th annual Polo Chamber of Commerce Car Show Aug. 10 was Ronald Glynn, LaSalle, with a 1949 Chevy 3100 pick-up truck.

The Mayor’s Choice was awarded to Jim Becker, of Rochelle, for his 1970 Chevy Nova.

The vehicles were two of the 115 registered for the show which drew an

estimated 250 spectators.

Awards were given to the Top 40 in the judged show.

Shelly Brown was the winner of the 50/50 drawing which topped the last couple of years, coming in at $1,698.50.

The long-standing car show is always held the second Saturday in August. For more information contact the chamber at 815-946-3131.

GV man’s car is finalist in national competition

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A German Valley man’s college auto class project may soon become a legend.

Steve Zettle’s 1965 Pontiac GTO is one of 18 finalists in the 2019 Hot Wheels Legends Tour.

The shiny red muscle car was chosen last month as the winner of the Chicago car show that one of 18 stops on this year’s tour.

The overall winner will be selected in November, and that car will be replicated into one of the miniature cars Hot Wheels is known for.

Zettle said he didn’t expect to be the winner when he attended the show July 13 with family members and friends.

“We were all floored,” he said.

“There were a lot of nice cars there.”

His car was one of 350 entered in the competition, and all entries are

by Hot Wheels’ invitation only after an application process.

Zettle, 37, bought the car in 2002 when he was a student at Highland Community College, Freeport.

“The guy I bought it from was going to scrap it,” he said.

Photo by Vinde Wells He worked on restoring the vehicle for two years, doing the body and paint work in class, and rebuilding the motor and transmission with the help of a friend of his father.

Another friend hand-painted all the lettering on the car.

The car has not had a sheltered existence — Zettle said he frequent-

ly takes it to local shows and cruise nights.

“I drive it everywhere, as long as it’s not more than 25 or 30 miles.

The motor likes a lot of fuel,” he said with a grin. “I used to drive it to work every day.”

He works at Bowman Electric, Polo.

The judges on the Legends Tour are looking for cars that were built by the owner.

“Kind of the ‘garage-build’ I guess your would call it,” Zettle said.

The tour’s website bears that out, saying that finalist at each of the 18 shows are selected “based on the criteria of authenticity, creativity, and garage spirit.”

Zettle said he has loved cars ever since he was a youngster.

“I listened to my dad and his buddies talk about their old cars and how they wished they had them back,” he said.

The Legends Tour began in March with a show in Miami, Florida.

Other shows have already been held in Houston, Dallas, Atlanta, Bentonville, Charlotte, Philadelphia, New York City, Detroit, Chicago, St. Louis, and Denver.

Yet to go are shows in Seattle, Phoenix, San Jose, and San Diego, wrapping up in Los Angeles on Oct. 19.

Oregon man dies in workplace accident

Ethan R. Thomas, 35, formerly of Chana, was pronounced dead at Rochelle Community Hospital.

Zettle, along with the other 17 finalists, each win a trip to the SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) Show in Las Vegas Nov. 5-8 where judges will line them up side-by-side and choose the grand prize winner.

The car chosen will be inducted into the Hot Wheels Garage of Legends, “a collection of one-of-akind cars that embody the brand’s challenger spirit and legendary design,” according to the website.

Hot Wheels held it first Legends Tour in 2018, looking for custom automotive builders across the country.

Thomas was a 2002 Oregon High School graduate and worked with his father, Howard “Duke” Thomas, at Thomas Plumbing and Heating for 10 years, and for CIG Logistics in Rochelle.

Among others, he is survived by his parents, Duke and Mindy Thomas, of Chana, and brothers Ryan and Garrett, of Oregon, and Jordan, of Mt. Morris.

Rochelle radio station WRHL, Thomas was on the side ladder of a rail car of a train on the east side of the Coated Sand Solutions, 1951 S. Steward Road, when he got pinned between the car and semi.

Rochelle police declined to issue a news release or comment further on the incident.

Results from an autopsy conducted on Monday indicated that Thomas died from blunt trauma to his chest.

Auction yields toy washing machine for museum

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society Recently it has been auction time, and it had been a while since I had taken a few hours to attend one.

I loved Lenny’s Auction Shed and liked nothing better than to come home with a big box of Christmas stuff. I always could find something old and unusual.

But I moved to town into a small house and my feet did not work well with just standing around. So I had given up going even though I missed them.

Then came Lenny’s last auction and the Auction Shed would be no more. I really felt I should go to the last one just to say that I was there.

So I got there early just to look around which I did and then sat down to rest.

I had decided on one item I would attempt to get just to get something at the last auction. It would have to be something small I could carry to the car.

By Karen Merlak The rains have come to the parched ground, bringing our lawns back to life.

The rumbling thunder filled the skies this Sunday morning.

Soon I saw Dave Grosnickle and chatted with him for a while.

I asked him if he had gotten anything and he answered, “Oh, no.

These people are serious buyers!!”

I had been there long enough to notice things that would have fit in nicely at the Polo Museum had gone for quite a bit of money. They were headed for who knows what community, but not Polo.

Someone in town was going to buy personally one item if they could and place it in the museum.

That, however, did not happen.

That item will stay in Polo but in another spot.

By that time I had gotten one thing and that was a toy washing machine from the 1930s.

Polo Historical Society was very fortunate to be given many children’s toys from the 1930s. They had been playthings of Annabelle Muench.

So the little washing machine will fit right in, and Annabelle had one just like it but it had been in bad shape.

I purchased this one from Lenny’s with my own money and donated it to the museum.

Then I found out quite by accident that there was another auction in Hazelhurst of Elizabeth Herbst Itnyre.

Elizabeth will be heading to Indiana to live.

We served on many elections as judges when I lived in Eagle Point.

I decided I needed to attend the auction, and this one went back to the olden days when they would be held at the home.

I greeted many people from Eagle Point and numerous others.

It seemed very appropriate that I was there since years ago I attended one of my first auctions at the very same location.

It was the auction of Margaret and Les Herbst, Elizabeth’s parents.

That day they held up a beautiful footed Fostoria compote bowl.

How it sparkled in the sun and it matched some pieces I had at home.

I thought maybe I would get it and was excited at the thought. It went

for a $100 and it did not go to the Obendorf home!

This however was Elizabeth’s auction, and different ones informed me of some Hazelhurst Lumber and Grain items.

In my mind I was certain those same items had already been placed in the museum. Later I found out I was correct.

It was a good thing that I did not have to bid on them because by noon I was suddenly sick.

It was all I could do to walk to the car and head for home. As I lay in bed I thought to myself that I must get out the big box of Hazelhurst stuff and see what needs to still go to the museum.

My auction days are over, and I do want to thank the gentleman who came to me during the rain shower at Hazelhurst.

He saw to it that I got to the garage under his umbrella before I was totally soaked.

When you carry a cane, people take care of you and he certainly did just that.

Even in the thundering skies, we feel the power and presence of God. For so many blessings, we are truly thankful.

This morning we were greeted by Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins.

Our special music was by Chuck Kearns, singing, “Peace in the Valley,” accompanied by his wife, Bev Kearns, on the piano.

Judy Nettz shared her memories of our church, through the eyes of her children.

Each month of this year, we are celebrating the memories made in our church building. The new building is becoming a reality.

Pastor Charlotte continued her

sermon series on the Summer of Love.

Charlotte also led the children’s message for our young friends, Katelyn, Harper, and Amelia.

As the summer winds down, our church is getting ready for the many new activities of a new season.

This past Thursday and Friday, I was able to stay home and work around my house to get ready for Clint’s trip home. With help from my nephews, Hayden and Garrett Bittinger, we worked on several projects in my yard.

Clint is more than ready to come home to celebrate his birthday and find time to relax.

His family and friends are excited to spend this time with him, too.

In the evening on Thursday, my friend, Teresa, and I visited our friend Trudy in Morrison. Trudy, Teresa, and I worked together as bank tellers in Sterling.

After our visit with Trudy, Teresa and I had dinner at a local restaurant where we continued our visit.

This past Saturday evening, I attended the musical, “Man of La Mancha,” at Timberlake Playhouse.

I have really enjoyed this spectacular season of plays and musicals.

This particular performance was especially moving.

As I listened to the special music from this morning’s service, I

noticed that Bev was playing the piece from memory.

Bev is very talented on the piano adding flourishes along the way.

Her focus shifted between watching her husband and playing the music.

I started thinking of all of the words I have memorized over the years.

There have been poems, lines from plays, song lyrics, and bible verses.

Each time the words are learned and committed to memory, they are written on our hearts.

The words are, then, available for us to use whenever we need them.

We can draw on their comfort and strength.

By recalling God’s words, we can remember all that God is for us. He is our loving Father and we are His children.

Great progress has been made on our church building.

Our prayers have been heard as the building starts to take shape.

Soon, our building will match our spirit, to lovingly serve those in our community and beyond.

My continued hope is that we will fill our churches with all the people that want to learn more about God’s love.

Our church family welcomes each of you and your family to worship with us.

An eye exam is a good idea, especially if things are starting to look a little fuzzy around the edges.

Brain Games team takes third at state The 2019 Senior Brain Games team from the Mt. Morris Senior Center took home third place at the state competition on Aug. 12 at the Illinois State Fair.

The team from Ogle County won the competition at the Mt. Morris Senior Center in May to move on to the state competition.

Each of the 102 counties in Illinois can send a team on to the state level.

“We are proud to have the third place team in the entire state from Ogle County and Mt. Morris,” said senior center director Melissa Nicholson. “If you see them around town, feel free to congratulate them on their great accomplishment. Local rockabilly band DFS will close the 2019 Mt. Morris Jamboree season with a free two hour show on Friday, Aug. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

DFS first started as a group that was to be a rockabilly Christmas band called “Ted & The Mistletones.”

“The idea exploded into something much bigger, wanting to take the band further than playing just the holidays,” said Larry Ubben, event organizer. “A setlist of ten was made, then 20 and so on, now they play over 50 songs every show for you to swing to all night long.”

The band is made up of four gents who love and live the rockabilly lifestyle, including lead singer Ted O’Donnell, Harry Euhus on lead guitar and vocals, Rick Nolting on upright bass and vocals, and Bill Englund on drums.

DFS was inducted into the Rockford Area Music Industry’s Hall of Fame this spring.

The future of DFS has an album or two involved and maybe some small touring.

Ladies Night Out at The Serenity Shed will be held on Friday, Aug. 23 at 6 p.m.

The project for the evening will be lighted glass blocks. All the supplies — including the lights — will be provided to create these one-of-akind decorations. The cost is $35 per person.

Participants can choose their own decorative painting and in-house artist Sandy will be available to guide and help.

All proceeds benefit Serenity Hospice.

The Ogle County Farm Bureau will host its annual Member Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12 at St. Mary’s Community Center, in Oregon, IL. The meeting marks the 102nd anniversary for the Ogle County Farm Bureau, which was started in 1917.

Ogle County Farm Bureau members and their families are invited to attend the meeting and participate in the dinner and business meeting of the organization.

Rotary’s Fall Fun on the River The Oregon Rotary Club will host a fundraiser, Fall Fun of the River, on Saturday, Sept. 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. on the deck at Maxson’s Riverside Restaurant.

The community is invited to attend the event which will offer riverboat rides, beverages, food, a cash bar, and music.

The proceeds will be used by the club for the Operation Warm project, which provides coats for Oregon Elementary School students, scholarships, and other activities to support the community.

Tickets are $20 per person and may be purchased from Rotary Club members or at the Oregon Park District.

Lunch on the deck will include sandwiches, salads, chips, and desserts.

Live music will be provided by J. T. Wells.

Local businesses, organizations, and individuals are asked to consider being sponsors of the event.

Two sponsorship levels are offered.

A donation of $500 sponsors one of three boat trips held during the afternoon. The sponsor will receive four complimentary tickets and be recognized in the program and at the entrance to the riverboat.

A sponsorship of $250 will assist in underwriting the cost of the food and music for the event. The sponsor will receive two tickets and be recognized in the program.

Going to 8-man football this fall, Polo saw a jump in the number of players interested in playing. Last season, in its final year of 11-man football, the roster had 23 guys. This year, that number has grown to 33.

“It’ll be nice when we get the pads on and we don’t have to scrimmage against garbage cans anymore,” senior lineman Jace Coffey said. “We can actually see people moving. It’s going to be different, but it will be a lot better for practice and getting better for the first game.”

Every year, the players do a little recruiting through the hallways, trying to get more people to play. This year, they went all-out.

“We convinced everybody that we can make a long run this year, we’ve got a lot in us,” Coffey said. “I’m happy with how many kids came out.”

“I honestly tell you that if we had

stayed at 11-man, we would have had seven varsity players,” Polo coach Jeff Bumsted said. “That’s where it was at the end of last year. We’ve got 11 freshmen out and nine sophomores. Our numbers have gone up, and a lot of the reason a lot of kids are coming out is to play 8-man.

We’re not playing the traditional teams that we play. We don’t know a lot of the teams that we’re playing, and it looks like fun, so that’s why they came out.”

That boost in numbers is even evident in the senior class.

“Last year we had three seniors go out; this year I think we have six,” senior quarterback Tucker Mumford said. “So far everyone’s doing well, they’re getting used to it. Even the new guys are showing energy and showing like they’ve been here all 4 years.”

New faces, though, mean new players having to get up to speed quickly. The summer schedule, and the Marcos’ strong attendance at their summer workouts, certainly helped with that.

“We did a lot of stuff in the summer, running plays and putting in our defense and running schemes, so we got the kids up to speed,” Bumsted said. “The only thing they haven’t had to do yet is hit.”

It is a season of change for Cole Faivre, even without the team’s switch to 8-man. The junior served as a fullback last year. Now he has moved to the offensive line.

“It’s not much different, because at fullback you’re doing a lot of blocking too,” he said. “It’s just a lot more physical on the line. You’ve got some big boys you’ve got to block. It’s about the same.”

With the work the Marcos have put in over the summer and through the first week of the fall practices, he has seen things progressing.

“We’re looking a lot better than we have,” Faivre said. “We’re firing off the ball quick, we’re hitting. We went out to a camp in Iowa and we were getting off the ball quick and driving people. We looked real nice.”

That camp was put on by William Penn University in Oskaloosa – about

an hour southeast of Des Moines – at the end of July for 8-man teams. Seeing what other 8-man teams do and trying out some of their own plays against other teams served as an eye-opener for the Marcos.

“There are things we thought we could do that we couldn’t do just scheme-wise because there’s one less guy on the line of scrimmage,” Bumsted said. “But it helped us. It was very interesting.”

But even going from 11-man to 8-man, a lot of the game remains the same. Players are still expected to make their reads, make tackles, hand off the ball, and block for the ballcarrier. It’s just going to happen on a narrower field with fewer people.

“One of the big things it helped with was knowing what we were bringing over from 11-man and what we would have to adjust to 8-man,” Faivre said. “We would say ‘OK, this might not work so well, we have to adjust this.’ I think it’s really helped with our plays, and making them more for 8-man.”

What started on a whim when good friend Brian Weidman of the Dixon Telegraph hired me to do Friday football games in 1996 has evolved into a rich and meaningful experience.

My life has been enhanced in ways I could have never imagined because of relationships formed with players, coaches, administrators, fans, parents, and officials from towns all over the northwest part of the state.

This year will to be a bit different, though. Because of two close family members having health issues and a desire to travel more, I am curtailing much of my game coverage, previews, etc.

The only certainty is that a weekly column will be done. That is what gets the most feedback from readers anyway.

Covering high school sports is a genuine slice of America and at least I can still have a small hand in it.

When the first A.P. football rankings come out, Forreston and Le-Win might be the top two teams and the Oct. 11 tussle between the

two schools will be another dandy.

A major change in the NUIC conference is football teams arranged geographically instead of by enrollment.

However, Forreston still plays all the heavy hitters, with Galena, Dakota and L-W being the non-divisional foes.

The biggest effect will be on the smaller-enrollment teams, who will struggle mightily against the likes of Forreston and Le-Win. Will it drive some of them to join Polo and River Ridge in 8-man ball? Aquin, AFC, Milledgeville and Orangeville are prime candidates.

Not just in the NUIC, but in small conferences all over the state, it will be very interesting to see how the 8-man movement progresses.

There are currently 16 teams spread throughout the state in what is called the Illinois 8-Man Football Association. Right now, the biggest drawback is excessive travel.

For the second year in a row, there will also be a playoff to determine an

8-man champion. With a pedigree stronger than anyone else, look for Polo to be a major contender.

The Marcos have also seen an uptick in numbers, perhaps because of a new brand of football.

Is it possible Oregon may be throwing the ball more than they have in the past? While walking by the football field earlier this summer, I thought it was a mirage, as 7-on-7 passing drills were taking place.

Then just a few days ago, I saw a practice formation with three receivers spread out instead of the usual wing-T. Apparently this isn’t my imagination.

That’s not the type of football I’ve come to expect out of the “ground and pound” Hawks. It might take some getting used to.

The position of quarterback is said to be the most important in all of sports, especially in the pros and college.

We’ve also seen that begin to filter down to the high schools.

These new breed of signal-callers are more athletic, can make reads, have advanced skill sets, understand play-calling and accustomed

to running a spread offense.

Oregon has first-hand experience seeing that in many of the quarterbacks they faced in the Big Northern.

I say this every August/September, but again am encouraging schools not to cancel sporting events because of heat.

Kids need to be tested, not given excuses to sit dormant.

It’s lawsuit mentality that often influences these cancellations, as many a school has told me it is a liability issue.

Let school administrators run the show in all interscholastic activities instead of living under the threat of lawyers.

On the hottest weekend of the summer, the Oregon Park District put on its triathlon.

All competitors survived the heat and humidity. Kudos to the park district for not falling prey to weather worries When in comes to academics, congratulations are overdue for Oregon winter and spring sports.

Every single boys and girls teams were named by the IHSA for having a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric D. Morris reports the following court activity.

Sentencings Mark T. Miller, 36, Leaf River, pleaded guilty Aug. 15 to domestic battery, a misdemeanor. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to 93 days jail to be remitted upon successful completion of 18 months probation.

Hanson also ordered him to cooperate with and satisfactorily complete the Domestic Violence Intervention Program, submit to random drug testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, and pay total fines and cots of $1,349. Two felony counts of domestic battery were dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Ryan A. Fenton, 32, Oregon, pleaded guilty to possession of a controlled substance. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced him to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections with one year mandatory supervised release and ordered him to pay total fines and

costs of $2,585.

Kelly A. Lee, 54, Byron, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct. Judge Robert Hanson sentenced her to 156 days in jail (time served); 24 months probation.

He also ordered her to submit to random breathalyzer test, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments as recommended, and pay total fines and costs of $834.

OBITUARIES MARY JANE BELHA Mary Jane Belha, 81, of Oregon, peacefully died on Thursday, Aug.15, 2019 at Franklin Grove Living and Rehabilitation Center where she had been a resident for many years. Mary Jane was born April 4, 1938 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was adopted as an infant by Roy and Emma Arnold, of Sterling.

She was a 1956 graduate of Sterling

ROSALYN FAGER Rosalyn “Rosie” Fager, 93, of Forreston, died on Tuesday Aug. 13, 2019 at Generations at Neighbors in Byron.

She was born Aug. 19, 1925 in Red Oak, the daughter of Charles and Ann (LaBuddie) Hirsbrunner.

She was a 1943 graduate of Orangeville High School.

She married Gerald Fager on Oct. 13, 1946 at St. John Church in Freeport. He died on Nov. 7, 1978.

Rosie farmed the family farm along-

Newman High School and attended college in Colorado.

Mary Jane married Carl Belha on Jan. 3, 1959 in Sterling; he died on Nov. 24, 2017.

Together they farmed in Lyndon before finally settling in Oregon in 1962.

She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Oregon.

She is survived by her brother, William Arnold, of Sterling, and eight nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and infant daughter, Christine Marie.

Christian funeral mass was held on Aug. 20 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Oregon with Rev.

Joseph Naill as celebrant.

Burial was at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Sterling.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Unity Hospice of Rochelle.

(Anthony) Rogers, Jeremy (Rhonda) Fager, Mindy (Ben) Porter, Travis (Keri) Fager, Todd Fager, Jessica (Adam) Fuller, Charlie Lukan, Amber Fager, Kelsei Fager, and Jordan Fager; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Allen; grandson Jake Charles; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Glen (Ida) Hirsbrunner and Charles (Helen)

Hirsbrunner; and special friend, Gene.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 17 at Faith Lutheran Church in Forreston with Rev. Scott Ralston officiating.

Burial was at White Oak Cemetery.

OBITUARIES Clifford “Cliff” H. Greenhow, 82, of Byron, died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 at his home surrounded by family.

He was born on June 16,1937 in Rockford, the son of Herbert and Alice (Anthony) Greenhow.

Cliff proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957.

He then went on to be owner of Cliff Greenhow Construction Custom Home Builder.

DIANA L. MARTIN Diana L. “Lynn” Martin, 72, Oregon, died on Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019 in Serenity Hospice & Home with her family by her side.

Lynn was born on Sept. 20, 1946 in Oregon, the daughter of Harry A. and Marguerite (Bornemeier) Smith.

She graduated from Oregon High School in the Class of 1964.

Lucille Pearl Ruthe, 96, of Forreston, died on Wednesday, Aug. 14, 2019 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford.

She was born July 29, 1923 in Stephenson County, the daughter of Frederick and Rena (Meiners) Ruthe.

ETHAN R. THOMAS Ethan Robert Thomas, 35, of Oregon and formerly of Chana, a son any mom and dad would be proud of, died on Friday, Aug. 16, 2019 from injuries suffered in a work place accident.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1983 in Rockford, the son of Howard “Duke” and Mindy (Mearns) Thomas. His ancestors came to America on the Mayflower.

Ethan was a 2002 graduate of Oregon High School, worked with his dad at Thomas Plumbing & Heating, and for the past seven years employed by CIG Logistics in Rochelle.

He loved his dog, Hooch, loved movies

Graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, Sept. 6 at 12 p.m. at Daysville Cemetery, Oregon, with a celebration of life immediately following at the Oregon VFW. Memorials may be made to the family. The family thanks the nurses from Serenity Hospice & Home for all their care.

Lynn married George “Bill” Martin on June 16, 2016 in Oregon.

She worked as a title searcher in real estate for Rockford Title Company and Northwest Title Company for many years.

She was an avid gardener, loved mowing her lawn, crocheted many items for all new baby arrivals, loved four-wheeling, and spend-

ing the winters in Arizona.

Lynn is survived by her husband, Bill Martin, Oregon; two sons, Darryl Ehnen, Oregon, and Steven Ehnen, Dixon; a grandson, Devin Ehnen, Lawrence, Kansas, a great-grandson; two sisters: Iris O’Hare (Bernard) Empen, Forreston, and Beryl Blumeyer, Oregon.

He once entered a 72-ounce steak eating contest in Amarillo, Texas, which was broadcast live and just missed completing the challenge.

Although not a church goer, he was a Christian.

An all around good guy, Ethan was always there to lend a hand to anyone that needed help and will surely be missed.

He had the absolute greatest and most giving heart.

Survived by his parents, Duke and Mindy Thomas, of Chana; brothers, Ryan Thomas, of Oregon, Garrett Thomas, of Oregon, and Jordan (Tabitha) Thomas, of Mt. Morris; niece, Ainsley Thomas, of Mt. Morris; grandparents, Marvin and Juanita Miller, of Mt. Morris; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Robert Mearns and Howard and Marie Thomas; uncle, Matt Mearns; uncles, Wayne Thomas, Robert Thomas, and Roger Fisher; aunt, Nancy Greenfield; and cousin, Matt Thomas.

Funeral services were held on Aug. 22 at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, Oregon, with Pastor David Rogula officiating.

Burial was at Daysville Cemetery.
