30th Car Show brings crowd to downtown Bright blue cloudless skies on Saturday brought out vintage car owners and enthusiasts to the Polo Chamber of Commerce’s 30th annual car show.

Shiny vehicles from over the decades lined both sides of the street for three blocks of Mason Street in the downtown while music from the 50s and 60s played.

Food and craft vendors also offered their wares to round out the event.

Fundraiser underway to replace pool stand

Polo officials are once again fundraising to update facilities at the city’s swimming pool.

Park Board President Larry Loomis said last week that the pool’s concession stand must be torn down because it did not pass a recent inspection.

In a press release Aug. 8, Loomis said inspectors from the Ogle County Health Department found that the building falls short of federal, state, and county requirements, and it needs commercial refrigeration and preparation equipment as well as diaper-changing stations, electric hand dryers, and soap dispensers in the restrooms, in addition to other improvements.

While the concession stand can remain open for the remainder of this year, Loomis said, it will not be allowed to open in 2020 without the changes being made.

The facility must be razed and a new one built by next year to meet the requirements, he said.

The park board and city council have formed a committee to raise the estimated $30,000 to $35,000 needed to build and equip a new 26-foot square concession stand.

The Polo Lions Club has already come through with a donation of labor and $7,000 to begin the fundraising project.

Donations can be made to an account at the First State Bank, and there will be a 50-50 raffle fundraiser with a drawing Dec. 7 during the annual Winter Carnival.

The city pool opened in 1968 after months of fundraising efforts. The Town and Country Days festival was founded specifically to raise money for the project.

The community again came through in 2013, donating $75,000 to replace the aging bathhouse.

“It is hoped that between donations and the fundraiser that enough money will be raised so that a new facility will be able to be built by next year,” Loomis said. “Unfortunately if not, then there will be no concessions or restroom facilities outside of what is in the pool area until the new building can be built,

To further complicate the situation, the same updates are needed at the concession stand at another city park.

“The city will receive a only a one year variance to having to do the same required updates for the Millard Deuth Westside Park,” Loomis said. “The estimated costs of that project will most likely be similar to the City Park. That project will most likely have to be done by the 2021 season to avoid being closed.”

Polo’s two major parks are funded by the city and not a park district.

“This year’s budget is $129,200,” Loomis said. “There are no full time employees as all work is seasonal and all business is conducted through city hall. There is virtually no money available to the city to do a project of the magnitude necessary to build a new facility.”

The concession stands at both parks have been leased out for several years because the cost of operating and staffing them is more than the city’s budget allows for, he said.

Polo’s is one of very few public outdoor swimming pools in the area.

People from surrounding communities including Forreston, Dixon, Sterling, and Milledgeville regularly drive there to swim. The pool also offers swimming lessons.

The Polo Police Department is reminding motorists that it’s that time again.

The Polo School District begins its school year on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

We would like to remind motorists that each morning and afternoon you will need to be more observant when the children are walking to and from school.

The Polo school buses will be in use on the rural routes as well as the town routes.

When a school bus turns on its yellow flashers it means that the bus will be stopping shortly to pick up or drop off a student.

As soon as the bus comes to a stop, the bus driver will activate the red flashers and put out the stop sign.

Anyone caught passing a stopped school bus in either direction is subject to a three month license suspension if convicted.

We tell people if there is any doubt about what to do when you see a school bus with its lights on just stop and wait until the bus is finished with the students.

Drivers are obligated to stop for the school bus.

The school bus is not obligated to wait for cars to clear. Don’t try to beat the lights.

We are asking the students that walk to school to be cautious, too.

Use the sidewalks and cross walks. Do not walk into the street out of the crossing zone areas as traffic can be heavy and it is a safety concern.

Also, walk with a friend if you can. Officers are often in the area at the beginning and end of school days, so do not hesitate to stop us and report any suspicious behavior or simply just to say hello. We’re here to help.

If you ride your bike to school you must follow all applicable traffic laws.

No bicycles are allowed on the sidewalk in the business district unless you are walking your bike.

Also, as a reminder, lock your bicycle once you arrive at school.

If you would like to have your bicycle registered with our police department, stop by the police department and we will take care of that in minutes.

It is also illegal to use a cell phone while driving a vehicle in Illinois unless it is hands free.

The Polo Police Department will be enforcing this law, especially in school zones.

We hope the students and the staff of the Polo School District have a safe and happy school year.

Family travels to North Carolina for christening

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society I have been traveling and I mean really traveling with two full days on the road.

Krista and Jim came from Wisconsin and after we dropped Dad off at Polo Rehab for respite care, we were on our way.

Kenneth could never have stood the trip and there was a time or two that I wondered if I should have stayed home, but I really wanted to go.

We were headed for Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the christening of Anna Fay Obendorf, twomonth-old daughter of Kyle and Rebecca Obendorf.

Kyle is the oldest child of Steve and Cheri Obendorf and this is the first grandchild for Steve and Cheri.

Anna Fay is the sixth great-grandchild of ours and the second great-granddaughter.

On my side of the family, the baptizing or christening of the children was just as important as the birthday.

The early baptismal certificates reflect this as they were very colorful and ornate.

I have my brother Ed’s framed and hanging on my wall since it is very unusual. Mine was a bit smaller.

So we sailed off to Winston-Salem and I loved traveling along enjoying the topography of the land.

We are known as the flat land of Illinois but soon the woods were on the horizon.

I loved the woods on my grandparent’s farm with the little creek running through it.

I watched the crayfish and water bugs with their long legs as a child in the summer.

Then came the hills and mountains with these areas beautiful any time of the year.

West Virginia is such a lovely state and the Smoky Mountains are wonderful to drive through on any occasion.

Soon we were there and we gathered at Kyle and Rebecca’s to say hello to Anna Fay. The next morning we gathered at the church and the first thing on the agenda was to get Anna Fay into her finery.

Anna Fay was the fifth generation to wear the family christening dress on Cheri’s side of the family and the 45th baby to be baptized wearing the dress.

Aunt Sue who is still living in California at the age of 101, was part of the first generation to wear the dress.

There is another baby, Halley Mary, two weeks old, who is waiting for her turn to use the dress in a suburb of Chicago. So the family dress will be busy

Great-grandmother Peggy, Cheri’s mother, is the keeper of the dress and it is her job to get it ready for each infant and to deliver it to the church on time.

It is not something you pack in a box and send it through the mail.

These great-grandparents drove the dress to Winston-Salem so Anna Fay could have her moment steeped in family tradition.

The priest in his small homily spoke about the story of Jesus welcoming the children. It is a story we are all familiar with and used many times with children.

When he said the words, “Jesus welcomed the children with open arms,” Anna Fay threw her arms wide open much to the surprise of us all.

The priest was amazed and felt she understood his words.

We will have to wait and see what kind of a calling Anna Fay has with the church during her lifetime or if she just decided at that moment to stretch her arms.

It was indeed a most unusual moment.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford.

Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friends, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper.

Harper was very proud to show off her new shoes. We are grateful we get to share in her joy.

This past Tuesday evening, I attended the regular meeting of PEO Chapter DW at the home of Kathy Scholl.

Maggie Henning gave the program on her recent trip. Attending from PIne Creek were Lisa Coffman, Beverly Coffman, Maggie Henning, Jean Cunningham, Vicki Hay, Betty Hare, and Judy Nettz.

My daughter-in-law, Ema Merlak, has made the tough decision to leave the Pacific Coast Trail.

She returned home to her husband, Matt, this past Friday evening after spending almost a month hiking on her own. Her plan is to

regroup and try again next year.

There have been so many times in my own life when I just needed a moment to stop and regroup before I could go on.

Ema is hoping to lighten her backpack before she makes another attempt at the trail.

We can lighten our load and share our burdens as we make our way through life. Jesus has promised each of us a time of rest.

We can share our burdens with Him and rest before continuing on.

He makes our troubles lighter.

In a time when the trail is rocky and our steps are unsteady, it is good to know we have a reprieve in Jesus.

He helps to carry our troubles and helps us to balance while we make our way through the obstacles ahead. We are truly blessed.

My hope continues to be that we will fill our churches with those who want to know Jesus.

Please join us this Sunday for our regular worship service where we will gather and find rest.

There is room in a little church in the country for you and your family.

READING MATTERS

Parents and grandparents can help develop reading skills Early learning has changed. It used to be that first grade was the year in which students learned to read.

Today, many important pre-reading skills are practiced in preschool, and kindergarteners are expected to learn to read.

This month a new group of young children will be entering kindergarten.

Let’s look at some important skills that build the foundation for learning to read and how parents and grandparents can support the learning of those skills.

Preschoolers are learning about the sounds of language. Learning to recognize and to create rhymes is a big part of this.

We can encourage these skills by singing children’s songs, reciting nursery rhymes and poems, and reading books full of rhymes.

The Barb City Stompers will return to the Mt. Morris Jamboree for a free two-hour concert on Friday, Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. at the Reckmeyer Band Shell in downtown Mt. Morris.

The band was formed in 2004, but the pedigree of some of the players goes back well beyond that date.

Clarinetist John Skillman has been a member of the Buck Creek Jazz Band for 31 years, for example, while Roy Rubinstein has offset his career as a physicist with more than 50 years of trombone playing.

In fact, with the exception of drummer Aaron Puckett, the whole band has pursued careers outside of music.

“Maybe it’s that factor that makes their music a product of love and devotion, said Jamboree organizer Larry Ubben. “There’s no doubting that they know their stuff nor that they have something personal to say. That’s no mean feat given the age of a lot of the material here.”

As a soloist, Rubinstein simply oozes character and the fact that the group has no cornet/trumpet lead affords both he and Skillman space to do their own things, Ubben said.

Serenity Hospice and Home will hold an eight-week class, “Understanding Your Grief,” beginning next month.

The class will be held every Tuesday from Sept. 8 through Oct. 29 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at The Serenity Shed, 131 N. Third St., Oregon.

“The group was ‘our’ group, not one that outsiders could drop into. It felt very safe for me and I trusted these people with my feelings,” said a recent participant. “If I wanted to share I could without fear of judgment. I was comfortable being with this group. I was not alone in my grief.”

The structure of the group will follow the book by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt which covers 10 touchstones in the areas of physical, emotional, cognitive, social, and spiritual growth to help participants through the grief process.

Wolfelt has written many books about healing after the loss of a loved one and is considered a leading grief educator.

The class will be facilitated by Cathy Warren, who is Serenity Hospice’s Bereavement Coordinator.

“I am very excited to offer a class like this one,” said Warren.

“Our grief groups are usually open-ended and people come and go as they travel through their own journey of grief. This is a more structured approach and the participant will know exactly when it will end.”

Each participant will receive a copy of the book by Dr. Wolfelt. For more information or to register for the class, call Serenity Hospice at 815-732-2499. Class size is limited.

Good Samaritan goes out of his way to help Dear Editor, In today’s fast paced world it is good to know there are still a few Good Samaritans among us.

A few days ago I had the misfortune of having my car break down on Illinois 2 between Grand Detour and Oregon.

My good fortune was that I landed adjacent to Doug Strawser’s rural residence.

After many dozens of cars drove by without so much as a glance, Doug was backing out of his driveway when he observed my plight.

His offer to help turned into several hours of driving me around to arrange a tow truck and a repair shop.

Very few people will expend that much time and energy to help out with an extensive problem that they didn’t create.

Thanks Doug!

Beautiful fall mums are available in a variety of colors for $8 each. Orders will be taken through Friday, Sept. 6.

These plants are grown in northern Illinois and will arrive just in time for fall decorating.

The mums are field-grown in natural conditions, leading to a more hardy robust plant.

Plants arrive in a number 2 pot (that’s about a two gallon pot) and measure approximately 16-18 inches wide by 14-16 inches tall with buds ready to bloom throughout the season.

The 13th annual Farm Heritage Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24 at East Jordan Church, 22027 Polo Rd, Sterling.

The admission and parking are free.

The day will start with a good ol’ fashioned farm breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy served from 7 to 9 a.m.

Tickets for breakfast are $8 for adults, $4 for youth to age 13, free for anyone under age 5.

Breakfast tickets are available from church members before the event or at the door.

The active farm machine demonstrations will begin around 9 a.m. and will occur periodically until 3:30 p.m. Static displays will be available all day.

This year’s active displays will feature a threshing machine, a stationary baler, wagon lifts and elevators, an ensilage cutter, a corn husker and shredder and tractor operations.

A blacksmith will demonstrate some tool-making and craft.

An activity center will allow kids, youth and adults to try their hand at powering hand-cranked items such as corn sheller or a rope-maker.

A bouncy house for children is new this year.

A farm animal zoo will again feature dairy cows, sheep, goats and more. This is definitely a fun zone for children, youth, and adults of all ages.

A lunch stand will run inside the air-conditioned church from 11:30

Tough going for the Ganymedes at world tourney Local team goes 0-3 for first time in years

BY EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@oglecountynews.com The weather was perfect and the venue was spot on. but unfortunately, the Oregon Ganymede’s were off their game—three to be exact— at the 17th annual World Tournament of Historic Base Ball. “We had some 2-out errors that really hurt us in every game,� said Captain Mark Herman on Sunday.

The Ganymedes were one of 12 vintage base ball teams who played on the Walnut Grove fields at the Henry Ford Museum’s Greenfield Village, in Dearborn, Michigan on Aug. 10 and 11.

The Oregon-based team was competitive, but winless against three competitors: the Saginaw Old Golds, the Black Flags of Drovertown, and the Lah-De-Dahs.

They fell to the Saginaw Old Golds of Saginaw, Michigan in their first match of the day 21-8. and two hours later, to the Black Flags of Drovertown, Huntington, Indiana, 17-12 after jumping out to a big lead only to fall in the later innings.

Early Sunday morning, the team lost to the Lah-De-Dahs 14-12. “We had many great plays, but too many errors,� Herman said. “Saturday was also an upset day for nearly all the previous tournament favorites as they were defeated one by one by several new clubs to the tournament.�

New preserve will be located just south of Grand Detour A local conservation agency has purchased more than 90 acres just outside of Ogle County for restoration and preservation.

Middle Rock Conservation Partners, a not-forprofit agency founded in 2017, bought the parcel on July 31 and has named it the Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site.

The property is along Illinois 2 just south of the bridge over the Rock River at Grand Detour and contains more than 70 acres of oak and hickory woodlands and savanna.

The purchase was made possible by a $466,000 grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation and private donations.

The Illinois Clean Energy Community Founda-

tion was established in December 1999 as an independent foundation with a $225 million endowment provided by Commonwealth Edison.

Its mission is to improve energy efficiency, advance the development and use of renewable energy resources, and protect natural areas and

wildlife habitat in communities across Illinois.

To date, the foundation has helped nonprofits and local governments purchase a total of 28,000plus acres of land through its Natural Areas grant program.

“In considering the grant request, the foundation was impressed by the work of the Middle Rock Conservation Partners to develop a solid protection plan for this parcel and to raise additional private dollars to see it through,” said Dennis O’Brien, Executive Director of Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. “We are pleased to help create a brand-new preserve for the public to enjoy and feel confident that the important natural resources of the site are in good hands.”

The Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site which will ultimately be open to the community for hiking, birding, and passive recreation.

The historical village allowed visitors to take a trip back in time with players shaking hands after good plays and stopping the game to wave their hats as the Edison steam-engine train passed by the fields.

Despite the record, Oregon fans who made the trip enjoyed the weekend.

“This is my first time coming and it is pretty neat,” said Dick Krug whose son Rick, 43, is the team’s catcher. “This is a very nice facility.

time as long as there aren’t any outhouses.”

Krug, a Chicago Cubs baseball fan, said his grandfather played for the Dixon Merchants in 1909.

“They had a 26-inning game against Muscatine, Iowa and he pitched the whole game,” Krug said.

“The White Sox tried to sign him, but he already had half-a-dozen kids. His name was Silent Bob Woodyatt.”

Krug said he enjoyed watching his son play.

“I played fastpitch and slo-pitch softball in Oregon in the 1970s,” he said. “When they got this started I was just a little too old.”

Last year, the Ganymedes won the 3rd Class Division, and earned an automatic bid to this year’s tourna-

ment.

Herman said the team would now be in a lottery with four other teams to see who would be invited back in 2020.

“The competition was really good this year,” Herman said. “This is the first time in 5 years that we didn’t win at least 2 games.”

The Ganymedes did win the “Furthest Traveled Award” in honor of being the team who was located the furthest from Greenfield Village, (373 miles from Dearborn, Michigan).

They also received a “Bag of Peanuts Award” for not winning a game.

The Indianapolis Blues also didn’t win a game so they got a bag of peanuts too.

The Ganymedes’ oldest player,

Jimmy Martinaiti, 75, of Oregon, accepted the awards for Oregon.

“He’s our ‘eye candy’,” said a smiling Herman, referring to Jimmy’s period-correct handlebar moustache. “The bag of peanuts award and the furthest traveled award is something that they did at the original Detroit World Tournament in 1867. This is the third year in a row that we have received the furthest traveled award.”

The Canton Cornhuckers from Clinton. Michigan won the 1st Class Division beating the Flat Rock Bear Clan of Detroit 14-9 in the championship. The Saginaw Old Golds won the 2nd Class Division and the La-DeeDahs won the 3rd Class Division.

Travelers along Illinois 2, north of Dixon, near Grand Detour will notice changes in the coming months.

A small parking lot is planned for the entrance along Illinois 2.

Initially the parking lot will provide access to Middle Rock Conservation Partners members so that they may begin stewardship at the site.

This will include removing invasive species, clearing non-native trees, and cutting-in fire breaks that will allow prescribed fire on the site for management purposes.

Regular burning keeps the brush in check and is critical to maintaining healthy prairie and woodland habitat.

Ultimately, the entrance will be available to the public. Look for the signs directing you to the Samuel and Edna Hill Preservation Site.

Located along the Rock River habitat corridor, the site is home to many plants and animals, including a large diversity of birds.

Middle Rock Conservation Partners will identify bird species pres-

ent at the site both now and as restoration progresses.

This kind of management should significantly increase the number of bird species and their abundance.

Middle Rock Conservation Partners is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization comprised of individuals who are committed to protecting and stewarding habitat for species in the greatest need of conservation.

Although Middle Rock Conservation Partners is a relatively new organization, established in 2017, it has already raised donations from the National Wild Turkey Federation and individuals to purchase prescribed fire equipment and a trailer to haul the equipment.

Since 2018 Middle Rock Conservation Partners has helped with natural areas stewardship at various sites in the area and will continue working to help maintain natural areas in Lee and Ogle counties.

Volunteers are needed for monthly workdays, prescribed burns, fundraising, grant writing, and for spreading the word about the work.

Training and equipment for all activities is provided.

Grand Jury The Ogle County Grand Jury indicted Duane Upchurch, 54, of Byron, Aug. 6 on four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

The grand jury indicted Payton Janssen, 21, of Iowa, on Aug. 6 on two counts of criminal sexual assault.

At the request of the Ogle County State’s Attorney, an arrest warrant with bond in the amount of $100,000 was issued.

Janssen was arrested Aug. 9 and appeared in court later that day when the bond was reduced to $50,000 over the state’s attorney’s objections. A status hearing was set for Aug. 13.

At 9:59 a.m., police took a report of a hit and run where a parked 2017 Ford truck owned by Bradley J. Nordman, 25, of Oregon, was struck by an unknown vehicle at some time between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. on Aug. 9 while parked in the 100 block of North Etnyre Ave. Anyone having any information regarding this incident, please contact the Oregon Police Department at 815-732-2162.

Aug. 7 Jessica R. Pendleton, 32, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 3;44 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 400 block of W. Washington Street.

Brittany L. Zell, 33, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 6:54 p.m. for disobeying a traffic control device. This violation occurred at the intersection of River Road and West Washington Street.

Aug. 10 At 12:21 a.m., police took one 17-yearold male juvenile from Iowa, and one 16-year-old male juvenile from Iowa, into limited custody for possessing vape devices, violating the curfew ordinance, and violating the park district ordinance of being in a park after closing hours.

The vape devices were confiscated, and the juveniles were transported and released into a guardian’s custody.

One parking citation and five verbal/ written warnings were issued Aug. 5-11.
