Sheriff ’s lieutenant dies in crash

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com A long-time Ogle County deputy died early July 28 in a head-on crash on Ill. 72 between Byron and Stillman Valley.

Randall L. Hilliard, 50, of Byron, who was off-duty, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at the intersection of Ill. 72 and Oak Court.

Illinois State Police said Hilliard was eastbound on Ill. 72 when the pick-up truck he was driving crossed the center line and struck a westbound sports utility vehicle driven by Rick A. Sgro, 51, of Oregon. The crash occurred at 1:27 a.m.

Sgro and his passenger, niece Allison R. Sgro, 24, of Mt. Morris, were taken by ambulance to Swedish American Hospital, Rockford, where they were listed Monday in fair contain.

He is being treated for a broken femur and wrist, and she has a broken back and internal injuries; both require surgery.

Abigail E. Sgro, 20, also of Mt. Morris, was also taken to Swedish American Hospital, and a third passenger, Daniel W. Merritt, 20, of Gering, Nebraska, was taken to MercyHealth Hospital – Rockton Avenue in Randy Rockford. They were disHilliard charged on July 28.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a Facebook posting that Hilliard began his career with the department on Feb. 6, 1991 as a correctional officer.

He was promoted to corporal, sergeant, and later lieutenant, holding many different positions within the department.

“Randy will be deeply missed by his family at the sheriff’s office but more importantly his family at home,” VanVickle said. “I would ask during this very difficult time you keep Randy’s wife, children, parents, and siblings in your thoughts and prayers.

cle were extended members of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office. Again please keep the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office family, Hilliard family and Sgro family in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Sgros, who are relatives of another Ogle County deputy, and Merritt were on their way home from a White Sox game in Chicago, according to a GoFundMe page set up to help pay medical expenses.

Abigail Sgro and Merritt are in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in southern Illinois.

Visitation for Hilliard was held on Thursday at Fitzgerald Funeral Home in Rockford.

Three businesses move into Commerce Building

Three health-related businesses are taking up residence in the former bank building on a prominent corner in downtown Oregon.

Crisham Family Dental recently joined Meghan Kurzac, who operates Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique, and Amanda Bordner, a therapist and clinical supervisor on the first floor the Commerce Building, the former bank building on the corner of Ill. 2 and Ill. 64.

Kurzac and Bordner moved in recently, and Dr. John Crisham put up signs on the outside of the building late last week announcing his plans to relocate there from the KSB building at 1307 W. Washington St. Crisham joined the practice of the late Dr. Joseph Kerwin in 1990, and now is launching out on his own.

He said he hopes to open within the next few weeks.

“Things are moving right along,” he said Monday afternoon.

“It’s very exciting. We’re in Oregon to serve the community’s dental needs.”

The Alfano family purchased the building in May, and renamed it the Commerce Building.

It was once home to the United Bank of Ogle County, the Rock River Bank, and most recently The Harvard State Bank.

Its second level once housed the Chamber of Commerce and the dental practice of Dr. Glen Orr, who recently retired.

Part-owner Tony Alfano said the plan for the building is simple: make it look great, bring in business, and be a boon to the community.

“It’s a really beautiful, really important building right there in the downtown area, and it has a lot of potential,” said Alfano. “It just needs someone to take it and make it realize that potential.

We felt we needed to be the ones to do that.”

With that, the Alfanos are improving the façade, and renovating both floors in the two-story building.

The office spaces on the first level remain largely the same, though the lobby has been split to make use of two suites, and bathrooms were added to the main floor.

He said they are leaning toward a residential use of the floor — possibly apartments for long-term rent, or short-term lodging for out-of-towners.

When it’s all said and done, the mission is for the Commerce Building to be something that brings pride to Oregon citizens, and impresses visitors alike.

“The downtown area in your community sets the standard for how your community, as a whole, is perceived,” said Alfano.

“With this building being right on the corner, in the middle of the downtown, it’s imperative it represents Oregon as a standard.”

Alfano said he hopes work on the outside will be finished by the end of September, and the top floor by the beginning of 2019.

FORRESTON FESTIVAL

Chamber to host car show Aug. 11 Cars, trucks, and motorcycles of all makes, models, and years will be on display at the 29th annual Polo Car Show sponsored by the Polo Chamber of Commerce on Saturday, Aug. 11 in the downtown area.

The show runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine. Awards for the Top 50 will be will be presented at 3 p.m. No classes are designated.Â

The day will include a swap meet, food vendors, a 50-50 drawing, and prizes. Deejay music will be provided by 3D Sound Company.

Car enthusiasts can off the day by attending the Freeport Cruise Night from 4 to 10 p.m.

Forreston Sauerkraut Days are coming this weekend. This year the festivities are a combined effort of the Hometown Days Committee and the American Legion Families. The weekend kicks off on Friday, with a community picnic at 5 p.m.

Bingo is back this year and the fun begins at 6 p.m. Along with Bingo there will be other carnival games sponsored by various Forreston groups. The Kids 1 Mile Fun Run is at 6:30 p.m. and the 5K Fun Run/Walk is at 7:30 p.m.  This year both races will start and end at Memorial Park. Registration forms for the races can be picked up at Green’s Motors or Koeller Forreston Hardware. Capping off Friday night is a movie in the park. “The Goonies� will be shown on a huge blow up screen on the east side of the grade school.  Bring lawn chairs and blankets to enjoy this classic film.

Trip for funeral brings look back at family history

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator Polo Historical Society My cousin Chris called from Champaign to inform me that our cousin Bernadene’s funeral would be in three days in Olney.

If you remember, Olney is the home of the white squirrels although I do not believe there are many of them left.

Chris wondered if I could make it to Champaign, and he would then drive to Olney from there.

Now I was the one who was hobbling around with what I thought was sciatica and was a trip something I could really do at this time?

But I had not seen my southern Illinois cousins for quite some time so I emailed my daughter Krista.

She was free and we were off on a Thursday morning after making quick arrangements to have someone here to look after Kenneth.

I enjoy traveling with Krista, and we zipped down to Champaign in no time.

After looking at Chris’ lovely flowers the four of us went to Ogden to spend the night in Chris and Jane’s 1895 Guest House.

Now this guest house could not be placed on the national register because of the large addition added on to it.

When restored a few of years ago they added a great room-kitchen on the first floor.

On the second floor they made extra bedrooms and more bathing facilities. But it all blended in and you felt you had stepped back in time.

I slept in the little original bedroom downstairs and enjoyed checking out all the woodwork and hardware on the doors.

was no wallpaper. It had been perfectly restored.

The next morning early we started for Olney and on the way we drove through Casey.

I loved the city lights and would have loved to see it at night. They are old-fashioned looking lights and just seemed to be everywhere in town.

In Olney we visited old country cemeteries where many members of my family are buried.

One called the Old Log Church Cemetery is where my grandfather and two uncles are buried following a tragic car-train accident in 1917.

My mother barely survived at the age of seven more than 100 years ago. We paid our respects.

Following the services and delicious luncheon we headed back north.

We had one more cemetery to visit and that was near Newton, where Burl Ives is buried.

It is called Mound Cemetery near Hunt City.

Burl Ives and my father went to high school together in Newton, and my dad took him under his wing along with his guitar.

The day came when they went to summer school together at college and shared a room.

Their cooking skills were not the best and my dad would tell the story of them cooking rice.

They both intended to be teachers until one day the head of the college came to Burl and suggested he try something else other than teaching.

So Burl tucked his guitar under his arm and headed east.

I have read of other stories how he left Eastern College, but this is the one that my Dad would tell.

We all know the rest of that story of the life of Burl Ives and his music!

The third annual U.S. National Straw Sculpting Competition opens Friday, Aug. 10 at 6 p.m. on the historic Mt. Morris campus.

This is an exciting presentation of fine art in straw.

Giant, new sculptures will be on display through Sunday, Aug. 26.

The competition is being judged for two awards this year, everyone who visits is eligible to vote for “Peoples Choice” and all competing sculptors will vote for “Artists Choice.”

The winners will be announced Saturday evening, Aug. 25.

Straw sculptures from the 2017 and 2016 competitions will be around the area, including at the White Pines State Park, the Ogle County Fair, the Boone County Fair, various locations in Mt. Morris and in Oregon.

The Culinary Historians of Northern Illinois (CHNI) is sending out a call for handwritten recipes at least 50 years old or older.

Look now for Mom’s, Grandma’s, Auntie’s or Dad’s recipes for the Cookery Manuscript Project.

CHNI will record these historic recipes and related family culinary memories for their growing archive as a way to study Illinois political and social history.

Bring these to the Historic Recipe Road Show at Polo Public Library and meet with an expert who can tell you more about your family recipes while they’re being digitally preserved to become part of CHNI’s digitized collection.

July 26 Alexis E. Sharp, 18, Tampico, was cited at 6:01 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia. Sharp was released on an I-bond.

A cooler than normal weekend is a reminder that a change is coming.

For now, we are enjoying all that the earth has to offer.

Fresh vegetables from the area gardens, beautiful flowers in bloom, and warmth from our God that loves us without end.

For His love, we are thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by June Schafer.

Our new organist, Bev Kerns, joined us this morning. She shared her beautiful music for the prelude, postlude, and throughout the service. We are about to be spoiled a second time.

We welcome Bev and her husband, Chuck, to Pine Creek.

Rev. Charlotte Hoppe was spending some well-earned vacation time in Chicago over the past week.

In her absence, Jim Hopkins led the children’s message for Laura

Jesus is on my “have to do” and my “want to do” lists.

I know I need His comfort and strength and I want to share in His joy and love.

When I was in my late teens, I started my journey as a Christian.

Realizing that I needed Jesus in my life made it easier to get through the stress of everyday.

As I worked at that relationship, He was there for me when I really needed Him most.

Knowing that He is always there when I need inspires me to get to know Him more.

I want to learn about the lessons He taught in his time on earth.

I want to know more about how I have been forgiven. I want to know more about the love He has for me.

All the love I have found in Jesus is available to everyone.

He wants to know each of us because we are all important to Him. We want to know Him when we realize how much we really need Him. I hope to see you next Sunday in our little church in the country.

We will be spending time learning more about Jesus and the good news He brings.

Kelsey presented a slide show of her trip to Honduras with Bill Hare and his crew.

Kelsey told beautiful stories of the people and the work being done so very far from the comforts of home.

I had a couple of unexpected calls from Clint.

He is doing well and likes working in the shop. It is a relief to hear from him.

The good news is our little family will all be together in a few short months to celebrate Matt and Ema’s marriage.

This past week, our walking club was unable to meet.

Schedules full of “have to do” activities sometimes take precedence over the “want to do” activity list.

My list of things I have to do usually includes tasks that aren’t very enjoyable.

I sometimes skip the things I have to do and just do the fun stuff instead.

Focus House names new director

Brenda Mason, LCPC, was named as the new director of Ogle County’s residential program for juvenile offenders in a press release issued July 26.

“Brenda attended Western Illinois University and obtained her bachelor’s degree in Law Enforcement and Justice Administration in 2005,” the press release said. “Following that, she began her career as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor at Bridgeway in Monmouth, In 2008 she moved to this area and began working at Sinnissippi Centers in Oregon while attending NIU, subsequently obtaining her Master’s Degree in Counseling.”

During her tenure at Sinnissippi she helped launch New Horizons Ogle County Drug Court and was the treatment provider for Drug Court clients, the release said.

She continued working at Sinnissippi as a Behavioral Health Services Clinician until 2015 when

she joined Focus House as its Clinical Supervisor.

In May, Judge Dan Fish, Chief Judge of the 15th Judicial Circuit, ordered part of Focus House shut down, and Brenda its director was fired.

Mason Focus House is a county-owned youth shelter-care facility operated by the Ogle County Probation Department.

“I requested the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts to conduct an operations review of Focus House,” Fish said in the May press release. “Based on the recommendations of that review, I am temporarily closing the residential component of Focus House to start restructuring and reorganizing.

At that time, Mason was named interim director.

County officials would not say what prompted the partial shutdown but Ogle County Board Chairman Kim Gouker confirmed that former Focus House Director Martine Lyle was relieved of her duties in May.

“I am thrilled to have the privilege of being named director of Focus House,” Mason said in the July 26 press release. “It is an exciting time in juvenile justice and here at Focus House. We are restructuring and expanding our program to meet the changes in the justice system, as well as the needs of the youth in Ogle County.

“I am committed to maintaining the relationship that Focus House has with the citizens of Ogle County and look forward to bridging new relationships with the counties in our circuit and our region. I am very fortunate to have a highly dedicated staff that work tirelessly to make our program what it is. We are all excited to see what the future holds. I am very grateful for this opportunity,” she said.

Focus House has three sites, one on Ill 251 north of Rochelle and two in Rochelle, and provides round-theclock care services for adjudicated youth, including residential care, on-site schooling and education, counseling, health care, leisure and recreational activities, and postdischarge services.

His goal is to educate attendees on: • Consumer Fraud Bureau, and other Bureaus of the AGO; • Current scams to be aware of; * Identity theft, which is a major concern; • How NOT to become a victim of either consumer fraud or identity theft; • The complaint process for both consumer fraud and identity theft.

This program explains basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia In the United States alone, more than 5 million individuals are living with Alzheimer’s and 16 million are serving as their unpaid caregivers.

The disease is a global crisis that impacts numerous families right here in our community. However, no one has to face this disease alone or without information.

The Alzheimer’s Association® has created an education program covering the basics of Alzheimer’s and dementia to provide a general overview for people who are facing a diagnosis as well as those who wish to be informed.

The free one-hour Understanding Alzheimer’s and Dementia program: Explores the relationship between Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. Examines what happens in a brain affected by Alzheimer’s. Details the risk factors for and three general stages of the disease.

Identifies FDA-approved treatments available to treat some symptoms. Looks ahead to what’s on the horizon for Alzheimer’s research. Offers helpful Alzheimer’s Association resources.

Historic site to host Hammer In Aug. 4-5 The company John Deere founded has a presence around the world, but it all started in Grand Detour, where Deere forged the first commercially successful self-polishing steel plow back in 1837.

To celebrate the blacksmith’s history and trade, the John Deere Historic Site is hosting Hammer In 2018 on Aug. 4-5. Dozens of blacksmiths from around the Midwest will fill the grounds of the John Deere Historic Site to provide demonstrations, sell their work, and introduce the public to one of the oldest trades in the world.

In addition to blacksmithing, other tradesmen and women will be exhibiting their skills and selling their wares including basket weavers, broom makers, trappers, wheelwrights, woodwrights and more.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, visitors to this free event will see how blacksmiths and other tradesmen mold and craft their wares into works of art and household goods. Many of the products for sale during the event will be made on location.

On Saturday at noon, guests will be treated to the sound of dozens of blacksmiths hammering in unison during an official “Anvil Ring.”

A food vendor will be on site and each day, items created by the attending blacksmiths will be raffled off.

“We are very excited to bring another Hammer In event to Grand Detour because it provides an unique opportunity to learn about the historical significance of blacksmithing and to see how the trade lives on as demonstrated by dozens of skilled professionals still practicing the trade today,” said Kristen Veto, manager of the John Deere Historic Site.

The John Deere Historic Site held its first Hammer In event in 2004, with 75 blacksmiths, attracting guests from around the country. Hammer In events have been hosted here every other year since in an effort to celebrate the trade as well as the history and legacy of the company’s founder.

2018 Summer Reading Program Reading Takes You Everywhere!

Another successful summer reading program has concluded…a total of 1,783 books and 108,838 pages were read by 71 participates.

A very special thank you to our generous sponsors, all the participants for their enthusiasm and diligence in reaching their reading goals, and their parents for all their support.

The finale program was held last Thursday night with Chris Fascione entertaining and delighting the crowd with juggling and stories about Chicken Feet in Your Soup, Too Much Noise, and an Enormous Turnip! Following his performance, prizes to participants who completed their reading goals were distributed. Congratulations to Brently, Anjali and Ryan for receiving the Grand Prize in their reading clubs and to Addison for receiving the Overall Prize-Family Membership to Nash Recreation Center (donated by the Oregon Park District) We hope you had as much fun as we did. Scenes for HBO series being shot in Ogle County Portions of White Pines State Park also part of filming STAFF REPORT

Some of Ogle County’s natural landscapes are being used as location shots for HBO’s new series “Lovecraft Country.”

Scenes are being shot this week at the White Pines State Park with more filming planned along a section of U.S. 52 in western Ogle County next week.

“We chose that area for its topography ... we needed something with an open landscape,” location manager Wes Hagan said last week. “We thought it would work well with the show, and that’s why we’re here.”

The crew came to Ogle County from Chicago, where they were filming scenes in the Pilsen neighborhood in the Lower West Side.

“Lovecraft Country” is a horror drama set in the 1950s about a black man, 22-year-old Army veteran Atticus Turner, who drives across the country searching for his missing father with his Uncle George—publisher of “The Safe Negro Travel Guide”— and his childhood friend Letitia, encountering racism and the evils of Jim Crow America as well as malevolent spirits.

White Pines State Park concessionaire Beth George said she received a call from HBO earlier this year about shooting at the park.

“The book is written and based out of Chicago,” said George. “We, luckily, are the southern most stand of white pines. That’s how they found our little space.”

George said she was excited about benefits local businesses will see throughout the week’s filming.

According to a letter sent to about a half a dozen residents by HBO and Random Productions location managers Hagan and Greg Chiodo: Route 52 west of Polo from West Canada Road to Freeport Road, and West Stewart Road from North Eagle Creek Road to Route 52, were to be closed earlier this week while scenes were being shot on Canada and at the intersection of West Stewart and Brookville roads.

However, due to an accident with one of the movie’s stunt cars in Elburn over the weekend, that shooting has been delayed until early next week.

Some scenes will also be shot on

Brookville Road at West Stewart and West Canada at North Eagle Creek. Only area residents will be allowed access during those times.

White Pines Resort, the restaurant, cabins, and gift shop located inside White Pines State Park, was closed from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, according to a press release from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Grey Squirrel, Red Squirrel, Whispering Pines, Lookout, and a portion of Sunset trail, all on the northeast section of the park near the lodge,​ were also closed, but all other trails, picnic areas, shelters and the campground remained open.

Staging crews could also be seen along Forest Road, located just east of the park, and in an adjoining field.

At the request of HBO, the IDNR refused to confirm the closure was for filming purposes, while the Illinois Department of Transportation would confirm only that a production company had taken out a permit to close Route 52.

“Lovecraft Country,” based on the 2016 novel by Matt Ruff, stars Jonathan Majors as Atticus Black, Courtney B. Vance as Uncle George, and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Letticia.

It’s produced by Jordan Peele, who wrote and directed the Oscar-winning horror film “Get Out,” and “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams, among others.

For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the last four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 3,000 members today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2,309,348 volunteer hours, a value of over $46 million, to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers—who come from farms, small towns, suburbs, and cities— offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” After 60 hours of training in topics such as vegetable and flower gardening, insect problems, and plant diseases, the volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities.

Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups, or schools; answering calls or emails at garden help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to estab-

Local man sets up Oregon Park District’s

Morris, finished the set up. “We’ve spent most of the day setting up and this should last between 7-10 minutes.”

Rager said each display is choreographed to meet the client’s budget.

“They give us a budget and then we come up with a design. Everything we do is custom for the client,” Rager said.

Spectrum Pyrotechnics, Inc., is based in Reeseville, Wisconsin, and does fireworks presentations from large to small.

“Our company does a very large display set to music in Madison, Wisconsin,” Rager said. “We build to suit the client.”

Rager, a 2001 Oregon High School graduate, had his control board wired to a wide array of shells behind the tree line at the park.

“Our largest shell tonight is 6 inches. We have everything wired so we can shoot them off in a particular order,” Rager said. “We shot the fireworks for the OHS football games for years so I am very familiar with local sites.”

Oregon Park District Executive Director Erin Folk said this is the second year that the park district has hired Spectrum and Rager to do the fireworks show.

“We were very pleased with the program this year. It was exactly what we expected. We told him what our budget was ($6,000) and he met that,” Folk said.

“And with the show being in a public park, Mitch took care of roping the area off and cleaned up everything after so there were no remnants of the show left in the park.”

The butterflies decided to set out some of The Northwest Illinois Audubon Society’s Elkhorn Creek Butterfly Festival on July 28 yielding the stage to the rest of the creatures and plants that call the preserve home.

During a late afternoon a walking tour led by John Walt, of Dakota-Freeport, only two monarchs buzzed by the group leaving Walt with plenty of time to talk about the native plants and insects at the Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve.

“This is what is called the cup plant,” Walt said as he reached for one of the large green plants, “You can see here that the leaves actually collect rain water.”

The leaves themselves form a small basin that allows rain water to collect in tiny pools around the stem, hence the cup comparison.

“Here are some ants and aphids on this leaf,” Walt said.

Around 75 people attended this year’s free event.

Located southwest of Forreston, north of Polo, the 43-acre site is home to several remnant hillside prairies, some wetland features, and a portion of Elkhorn Creek.

Grasses such as big bluestem and little bluestem in addition to milkweeds, wild bergamot (bee balm), spiderwort, and coneflowers are just some of the forbs and grasses on the site.

Volunteers are busy working to restore and re-create native communities. Individuals are welcome to participate in various management tasks including seed collecting and planting, weed suppression, wood cutting, and prescribed burning.

Many species of wildlife occur in the habitat with 450 species recorded including 130 species of birds, 77 species of insects, and 201 species of plants.

The Elkhorn Creek Biodiversity Preserve is located three miles southwest of Forreston in the southwest corner of West Grove and Freeport Roads.

POLO GIRLS SOFTBALL GIRLS COMPETE JULY 21

Polo One and Polo Two faced each other in the finals of the Minor League Girls in Forreston July 21 where Polo One eased by Polo Two by a 4-2 margin.

Polo One, who was the home team, did not score in their half of the first.

In the second inning, Polo One picked up a pair of runs.

Ava McFalls led off the inning with a double. Ellie Merrell was hit by a pitch to put two Polo One runners on with no outs.

Avalyn Henry singled to score both McFalls and Merrell to give Polo One a 2-0 lead after two innings.

In the top of the third, Polo Two got on the board with a solo run.

Ryplee Custer and Ravyn Dixon were hit by pitches and proceeded to steal second and third.

A single by Grace Woodin scored Custer. An infield out ended the inning before Polo Two could tie the game.

Midway through three, Polo One held a one run lead at 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Polo Two tied the game at two. Joya Katner led off the fourth with a single.

Katner went to third on a double by Izabella Witkwoski. Witkwoski tried to stretch her double into a triple and was out at third base as Katner scored to tie the game at two.

The score was still tied when in the bottom of the fifth, Polo One struck for two runs which would prove to be the difference in the game.

Leah Tobin singled to open the inning.

Zandra Vock singled to score Tobin.

Grace Maitke tripled but was nailed at the plate as Vock scored giving Polo One a 4-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth and final inning, Polo Two went down in order as Polo One prevailed by a margin of 4-2.

Polo One’s victory not only gave them the championship of the league but was the capping off of a 15-0 season.

Polo Two was the most improved team of the season as they started the season, which was decimated by repeated rains, with a subpar performance and then rallied down the stretch to go 6-6 for the campaign.

In Senior Division Tournament, in second round action, Polo faced off against Dixon Two. After having rallied for six runs in Amboy several nights before to win to advance to the semi-finals, Polo would need an almost perfect game against Dixon to win.

Dixon had some excellent pitching and a solid defense and Polo could not afford any mistakes going against the best team in the league.

Unfortunately, the hometown ladies did not have a good game as pitching faltered early to give Dixon a 3-0 lead after one as Dixon would go on to post an 11-4 victory.

Polo trailed by a margin 8-0 going into the top of the fourth.

Too many walks and some less than spectacular pitching had dug a hole too deep to overcome.

Dixon would add two more in the bottom of the fifth and add two more in the bottom of the sixth to win going away at 11-4.

Dixon collected just five hits on the

night while Polo had two.

The base on ball was the key factor as the guests had a total of 12 free passes to four for Polo.

With the loss, Polo would play for the consolation championship game against the loser of the Davis Junction One/ Byron game while Dixon Two would face the winner.

In the championship game, Dixon Two easily outdistanced Davis Junction by a margin of 11-1 in five innings.

A Rockford man was arrested July 31 for robbing a Davis Junction gas station.

Jourdan R. Mondragon, 41, was charged with armed robbery, a Class X felony, and was scheduled to appear in Ogle County Court on Wednesday.

Ogle County Sheriff’s Police said a male entered the BP gas station at 14032 Jourdan R. E. Ill. 72 on July 29 at Mondragon 4:45 p.m. and, while armed with a weapon, stole the cash register drawer.

Detective Lt. Brian Ketter declined to reveal what kind of weapon he had, but said it was not

a handgun.

The suspect was last seen northbound on Ill. 251 in a silver vehicle.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 4400 block of 11th Street in Rockford on July 30 at 6:40 p.m. and found items of evidence at the residence and in the silver vehicle.

As a result of the search warrant, Mondragon was arrested on an outstanding Rockford Police Department warrant and transported to the Winnebago County Jail.

The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Rockford Police Department during the execution of the search warrant.

Rockford man charged with robbing gas station

In regards to the public meeting being held at the Nash Recreation Center on Aug. 2 at 6 p.m. referencing the bike path extension, I, Chris Corcoran, would like to invite the community to consider the idea of a public Olympic-sized swimming pool to be built at the Oregon Park West as part of the Oregon Park District’s master plan.

With creative planning and use of pool space, a city pool can capture a wealth of programming. A quality city pool is also a sign of a functioning, healthy community.

As our communities grow, these are the sorts of features that our residents are demanding.

They often become social hubs and meeting places for regular users. They draw crowds from all surrounding communities.

Swimming pools go far beyond swimming lessons and swim teams.

They offer the unique benefits of providing a competitive sport, a recreational

activity and a life-saving skill.

In addition pools serve both genders, all ages, groups, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Think of the possibilities that a city pool can offer.

An Olympic-sized outdoor pool can bring revenue by hosting swim meets and competitions, all while energizing the local economy.

Those folks from surrounding communities will all use the city amenities; food, gas, retail shops and more.

There is no doubt that pools of any size are expensive to build as well as operate and maintain.

Appropriate user fees and good programming decisions can make a large dent in those expenses and potentially allow the pool to break even, but the quality-of-life element is tremendous.

We are all invited to attend the meeting — so let’s take this opportunity to propose the idea of a community swimming pool.

4-H’ers show off prized felines at cat show

BY VINDE WELLS vwells@oglecountynews.com It’s pretty clear how Kaden Lingbeck, 11, a member of the Leaf River Soaring Eagles 4-H Club, feels about his cat.

He snuggled his gray and white kitty Christine and gave her a smooch on the head after she won the championship in Junior Cat Showmanship Monday evening at the Ogle County 4-H Cat Show held at the Farm Bureau building in Oregon.

He told Judge Patsy Unger, of Mt. Morris, that Christine began life as a “barn cat.”

Unger had high praise for the five participants in the show and their pets.

She said she had a tough time making her decision for first and second place.

“I have no criticism for any of you,” she said. “Every one of you was so good.”

Laci Meyer, 14, also a member of the Leaf River Soaring Eagles, was the champion in Intermediate Cat Showmanship with her Siamese named Poshe.

The Cat Show was one of the preliminary events of the Ogle County Fair which kicked off Wednesday and will run through Sunday at the fairgrounds on Limekiln Road a mile west of Oregon, just off Ill. 64.

Grandstand events include the Big Hat Rodeo on Friday at 7 p.m. and a Demolition Derby on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Exhibits will include 4-H projects and shows, as well as the Open and Junior Open Shows, with an array of topics from traditional livestock, foods, and clothing to electricity,

Daily entertainment includes Woody’s Menagerie with animals from around the world, and a chain saw artist.

The Magic of Brian Holt will be featured on Friday and Saturday, and the

carnival is open daily with a variety of rides and games.

Musical entertainment by local groups is planned daily at the music pavilion.

An open horse show will wrap up the events on Sunday afternoon.

Gate admission is $8 per person and includes unlimited carnival rides.

Grandstand shows are an additional $10.

William R. Felse, 24, of Rochelle, was traveling southbound in his Pontiac Bonneville when he failed to negotiate a curve, drove off the roadway, and struck a utility pole.

Lynn-Scott-Rock EMS responded to the scene and Felse refused treatment.

He was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane usage and released on an I-bond.

ISP was assisted by the Ogle County Sheriff’s Department.

July 16 Demetrius Martell Flowers, 33, of Matteson, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for speeding at 9:53 a.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 88 in Lee County and was wanted on a Cook County warrant for possession of fraudulent ID card. Flowers was transported to Lee County Jail.

July 21 Erik Cena, 20, of Rockford, was stopped for speeding at 9:23 a.m. on Interstate 39 northbound at milepost 103 in Ogle County and charged with driving while license suspended and speeding. Cena was released on an I-bond.

William T. Michaels, 55, of Compton, was charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol after he crashed into a cornfield at 11:21 a.m. at Ill. 251 and Reynolds Road in Lee County.

He was also charged with improper use of registration and improper lane usage. Michaels was transported to the Lee County Jail.

Ruby Lee Losoya, 30, of Darlington, Wisconsin, was stopped for speeding at 6:57 p.m. on Ill. 64 at Chamberlain Road in Ogle County and charged with driving while license suspended. Losoya was released on an I-bond.

July 12 George Anthony Reeves, 53, of Ashland, Kentucky, was stopped for a routine Motor Carrier Safety inspection at 3:43 p.m. on U.S. 30 at Moline Road in Whiteside County and charged with driving while license suspended. Reeves was released on an I-bond.

Marie J. Gerwarth, 39, of Lombard, was stopped at 8:40 p.m. on Interstate 88 eastbound at milepost 35 in Whiteside County and charged with driving while license suspended and no

Marvelous Marvin Carl Wiemken, 75, of Winslow, died on Saturday, July 28, 2018 in Hanover at Blanding’s Landing in the arms of his son. He was born on March 14, 1943 in Polo, the son of Carl and Clara (Schwitters) Wiemken. Marvin was raised in Polo and attended Polo High School. He married Sandra Kay Miller on Dec. 4, 1965 and together they lived on their family farm near Winslow for 52 years. Marvin was a loving father to all five of his children.

Marvin lived his life as a dairy and hog farmer as well as a carpenter and handyman — there was nothing he couldn’t “fix,� especially if there were duct tape, caulk, or pliers around. He was employed at Lena Builder’s Incorporated for several years. He enjoyed Enduro, motocross, and hill climbing alongside his son, grand-

children, and many other family and friends; having only stopped just in the last few years. He was a lifetime AMA member and member of the Rock River Riders motorcycle club in Polo. Marvin valued spending time with his family very much and never missed an opportunity to be at a family event.Â

Along with being a family man, Marvin was a hard-working farm man. Many hours were often spent in the pasture fixing fences, bailing hay, and tending to the cattle. Later in life, he grew fond of fishing on the river and enjoyed spending his free days doing so. He also enjoyed maintaining a small garden where he grew an assortment of vegetables. His love for farming, carpentry, and gardening were shared and passed on to not only his own children, but also his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marvin was known as a loving, reliable man having been a wonderful father, grandfather, and mentor to all. He had a “voice of reason� that had a way of bringing guidance and comfort in any situation, day or night.

Marvin is survived by his wife, Sandra (Miller) Wiemken; children, Penny (Jan) Bawden, of McConnell, Jeffery (Rita) Wiemken, of Winslow, Brenda

July 26 Christopher Johnson, 29, Rockford, pleaded guilty to domestic battery. He was sentenced to 100 days in jail (satisfied) and ordered to pay fines and costs of $936.

Philip Koenig, 30, Rochelle, pleaded guilty to aggravated domestic battery.

Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to 60 days in jail and 12 months probation, and ordered him to submit to DNA testing, random drug testing, cooperate and satisfactorily complete Domestic Violence Intervention Program, cooperate with and satisfactorily psychological or substance abuse assessments as recommended. Roe also ordered him to obtain a mental health assessment and have no contact with the victim, and pay total fines and costs of $1,596. Counts of criminal

trespass to a residence and two counts of domestic battery were dismissed.

Leonard Cook, 50, Rochelle, pleaded guilty to aggravated battery. Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to 180 days in jail, with 31 served and 149 stayed, and 24 months probation Roe ordered him to submit to random drug and alcohol testing, cooperate with and satisfactorily complete psychological or substance abuse assessments or treatment as recommended, and pay total fines and costs of 1,486.

Counts of aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery were dismissed pursuant to a plea agreement.

Trendall Lewis, 36, Rochelle, pleaded guilty to delivery of cannabis. Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to 24 months drug probation without conviction and ordered him to submit to DNA testing and random drug testing, perform 30 hours public service work, and pay total fines and costs

of $3,631.

A count of possession of drug paraphernalia was dismissed.

Bryce Trevino, 28, Cherry Valley, pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

Judge John B. Roe sentenced him to a judgment of conviction and conditional discharge and 18 months probation, and ordered him to perform 20 hours public service work. A felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm was dismissed.

Goebel and domestic partner Darin Thompson, of McConnell; two daughters from a previous marriage, Anna (Ronnie) Crossley, of Polo, and Tammy (Dennis) Swider, of Rochester Hills, Michigan; one sister, Deloris (Bob) Massey; one brother, Paul (Beverly) Wiemken; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Clara Wiemken; father and mother-in-law, Rex and Shirley Miller; and step-father, Nevin Brown. A visitation will be held on Friday, Aug. 3 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and a memorial service held on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018 at 1 p.m., both at the Schwarz Park Boulevard Chapel, 608 S. Park Blvd., Freeport.

Cremation rites will be accorded to his wishes.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

SHERIFF ARRESTS Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following arrests.

July 24 • Ryan Rush, 34, of Byron, was arrested at 7:57 a.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop on Illinois 2, just into Winnebago County. Rush was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

July 25 • Deputies, along with the Polo Police department, responded to a domestic problem at 16287 West Robin Road. After an investigation, Carrie L. Richardson, (age, town not listed) was arrested for domestic battery, disorderly conduct, and resisting arrest. Richardson was taken to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

• At 2:22 a.m., deputies along with Monroe Center EMS responded to the 7000 block of Kilbuck Road for the report of an ATV accident with injuries. After an investigation, it was determined that Angela K. Tatroe, 38, of Genoa had crashed her vehicle into a telephone pole and there was no ATV involved.

Tatroe was transported to OSF Saint Anthony’s Hospital for non life threatening injuries by Monroe Center EMS. She was arrested for driving while under

the influence of alcohol, driving while license revoked, and several other traffic citations. She was released on a $3,000 I-Bond.

• At 8:27 a.m., deputies were dispatched to the Citgo Gas Station, 406 E. Third St., Leaf River where it was reported that Joshua S. McQuality, 41, of Leaf River, had walked into the gas station and threatened the cashier.

After an investigation, McQuality was located at his residence, 806 Main St., Leaf River, and taken into custody for aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond pending a court appearance.

• Jeffrey Lee, (age, town not listed) was arrested on a warrant for driving with a Commercial Driver’s License suspended.

Lee posted$5,000 (10%) bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 17.

• Robert Murbach, (age not listed), of Byron, was arrested for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North Illinois 2. Murbach was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond. He was also cited for speeding and operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

July 26 • Quintin McGee, 29, of Stillman Valley, was arrested for aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint. He was arrested by deputies on Valley Drive in Stillman Valley after the investigation of a domestic battery. McGee was held at the Ogle County jail in lieu of bond.

• Ernest Elswick, 51, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for possession of a stolen title/ certificate/plate. Elswick posted the $15,000 (10%) as bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Aug. 24.

• Loren Goatcher, 33, of DeKalb, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Goatcher’s bond was set at $1,340 pending a court appearance.

• Remal Walker, 27, of Oregon, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Walker’s bond was set at $1,228. He received a $1,000 recognizance bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

• Dewayne Whelan, 49, of Loves Park, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Whelan’s bond was $767, but he was given a $1,000 recognizance and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is

scheduled to return to court on Aug. 27.

• Mark Daugherty, 43, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license revoked. Hewas arrested by deputies on Illinois 251 near Davis Junction after being stopped for speeding. Daugherty was held at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond.

OREGON PARK DISTRICT The Oregon Park District offers the following events and activities.

Summer Meals The Oregon Park District will be offering free sack lunches to anyone 18 years and under this summer. Every Thursday from 12-1 p.m. Volunteers will be serving the lunches at the Mix Park shelter.

The last Thursday meal will be served is Aug. 9. Meals follow the USDA meal requirements. Other activities will also be available to participate in each Thursday at the park. In the event of inclement weather, this service will be moved to Nash Recreation Center.

Walking Club Calling all walkers! Join the Oregon Park District walking club every Tuesday at the upper Park West shelter from 8-9 a.m. Enjoy camaraderie with fellow walkers and walk at your own pace.

Walkers can log their miles for the Oregon Park District’s Pacer’s Club or just enjoy the company and exercise. No fee or registration is required.

Dog Days of Oregon Socialization is important to any dog’s development and overall quality of life.

Monday, Aug. 6 from 5:30-7 p.m., join dog owners and their dogs at Wiggly Field for a playdate. Dogs must be over the age of 1 and are expected to be well socialized with a variety of different dogs. We recommend everyone brings treats to encourage positive socializa-

tion behavior. Dog handlers must be 18 years or older. All dogs must have a current Wiggly Field membership.

Junior High Cross Country (6th-8th grade) Junior High Athletes will develop endurance, improve their running technique, and build team camaraderie. Sign up early to ensure you maximize practices before the meets! Practices are scheduled to begin the week of August 6and will be held multiple days of the week. Meets will begin Sept. 1 and be held similar to the high school schedule.

Transportation to meets is not provided.

Co-Ed Softball (18 years & up) Recreational softball is back at Park West! This league is designed for men and women to enjoy slow-pitch softball through friendly competition. Farmers Market The market is held in downtown Oregon on the Courthouse lawn every Friday from 4-7 p.m. through Sept, 28.

Shoppers can pick up homemade and homegrown goods (artisan breads, fruits, veggies, plants, flowers, baked goods, honey, jewelry, soaps and lotions, dog treats and more).

Food Vendors will also be on site for those who enjoy eating at the market.

Stop and listen to live entertainment from 5-6:30 p.m. each Friday.

The Community Spotlight is new this year at the Market with the activities starting at 4:30 p.m. The fourth Friday of each month children can enjoy “Make & Create with Aireloom Music Studio.”

Deep Water Aerobics Deep Water Aerobics is a more

intense workout than your typical water aerobics class. Working out in the deep end will allow you to get an intense cardiovascular workout without the impact.

You will also increase your endurance, flexibility and strength.

Participants do not need to know how to swim. An aqua jogger belt will be provided. Summer classes are Mondays and Saturdays from 9-10 a.m. Drop-ins or 5, 10, or 15 Water Aerobics passes are accepted.

Water Aerobics Exercise your entire body without putting stress on your back and joints. This class will work on toning, cardiovascular strength, endurance, and flexibility.

Twinges Let the natural buoyancy and resistance of the water help you improve your joint strength and flexibility along with improving cardiovascular endurance while walking and jogging in the shallow end.
