Rockwood ready to serve Polo as chief ‘​I am honored that Polo has wanted me to serve for them’

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Early in Tim Rockwood’s tenure as a Polo police officer, a semi truck came through town with round hay bales that were in danger of falling off and becoming a safety issue.

Rockwood, who was raised on a farm and worked for Polo’s street department in the years prior, parked his squad truck and jumped in the city’s loader and fixed the problem for the driver.

“I’m not going to fault him, I’m going to help him and get him on his way,” Rockwood said. “That’s what this job is supposed to be. That’s why I took this job. I want to help.”

Rockwood was named Polo police chief on Feb. 18 at a city council meeting after former chief Jon Mandrell departed for a position at Sauk Valley College.

The meeting room at city hall was filled with his friends, family and community supporters as he was sworn in and had his badge pinned on.

Rockwood started work for the Polo street department five years ago. Two years after that, the city sent him to the Illinois State Police academy, and he graduated and returned to Polo and has served as an officer since.

“When the position came open here on the police, I wanted to go for it,” Rockwood said. “I had the support of everybody. It was really weird. It’s very humbling having so much support and so many people behind you. It’s a really good feeling. It makes you feel like you’re doing the right thing.”

Working in law enforcement has always been a dream of Rockwood’s. His great grandfather was chief in Amboy back in the 60s. His father wanted to be a state trooper but had to give up the dream to take care of his family. Rockwood’s father came from Missouri to see him be sworn in last week.

The 40-year-old Rockwood never planned to be chief this soon, especially with just three years of experience. And when the 38-year-old Mandrell was hired last May, he thought it’d at least be a while before he had a shot again.

“When they hired Jon, I thought, ‘There goes my chance of ever doing it,’” Rockwood said. “Because Jon is a couple years younger than me.”

Rockwood doesn’t plan on changing much as chief and has been happy with the direction it’s gone in recently under the leadership of Mandrell and his predecessor, Kurt Cavanaugh. Rockwood’s

When there’s a traffic stop, he wants his officers to use it as a learning experience for the driver. The example he used was getting a parent to think twice at a stop sign near a school while driving their child there in the morning.

Rockwood also took pride in the ability of his officers to listen to and find common ground with those that they interact with.

“There’s a lot of mental illness in today’s society and you never know where someone is coming from,” Rockwood said. “A lot of people just need somebody to talk to.”Rockwood grew up in Dixon and graduated from Dixon High School in 1997. He worked as a laborer for 20 years before getting into law enforcement. Policing isn’t all he’s ever known. That, he says, gives him a unique look at the profession.

The Polo City Council and Rockwood’s predecessors placed great value on Rockwood’s non-policing experience while considering him for the position.

His street department experience helps him to know every road in the area, for example.

To pave the way for his hiring, the city council had to edit the city’s employee

handbook and change the experience requirement for police chief from five years to three years.

“My class motto when I was at ISP was ‘honored to be chosen, chosen to serve,’” Rockwood said. “I am honored that Polo has wanted me to serve for them. They’ve always been a big backing for me.”

Rockwood believes he has the policing aspects of the job down. Mandrell praised the way that his detective tendencies have improved since his hiring.

Mandrell has also been helping him to prepare for the new responsibilities that come with being a chief.

Those duties include answering ordinance questions from citizens, working with the aldermen and the mayor, managing time and meetings, reporting calls to the state and logging videos and working with the state’s attorney.

He’ll have plenty of time to learn. And that’s what the city is looking for after shorter stints as chief by both Mandrell and Cavanaugh.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Rockwood said. “Because I love this community, the people in it, and I still think I can better and make this place, I hate to use the term Mayberry, but I enjoy our little town and I want to keep it that way.”

Coley’s key to being a successful high school student is establishing good time management skills early on in school.

Coley’s life philosophy is “Get some rest, tall child! You can’t keep burning the candle at both ends!”

She always tries to follow John Mulaney’s advice and remembers to prioritize sleep.

Patrick Wright, a senior at Polo Community High School, has been selected as November Student of the Month.

Patrick is involved in several activities in school including student council, Spanish club, and the academic team. Outside of school you can find Patrick participating in Boy Scouts of America, reading books or playing video games.

After high school, Patrick plans to go to college and major in engineering. His key to being a successful high school student is one must be motivated to put forth one’s best effort and manage one’s time effectively.

St. Mark’s Lutheran is inching towards 150 years

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society Today is one of those days when the temperature is in the high forties, families are out walking with the family, and one has the feeling of spring around the corner.

It is a good feeling. At St. Mark’s Lutheran we are inching closer to our 150th which will be in May. Our stained glass windows are such a lovely part of our church property and we are finding out more about the people in whose memory or honor they represent.

The one over our alter was given in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Graehling, Sr.

By Karen Merlak Our shortest month comes to an end with a few more cold temperatures. We anxiously await the rebirth of spring and the newness of being reborn in Christ. Now is the time to prepare for the many changes that new life brings. For the many blessings we have received, we are thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins.

Larry Riffle shared the Moments for Missions piece for our upcoming offering. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for our young friend, Amelia.

The names on the window say, Henry Graehling, Sr. and Walburga.

Let us find out about Henry and his wife Walburga.

Henry was born in Germany in 1828 and at the age of 22 he sailed for America. He worked in a vice factory in Pittsburg. Walburga was born in Germany in 1835 and was one of 14 children. She left her country with a sister and a brother for a better life.

Henry and Walburga met in Pittsburg and they were married in 1853.

They left the east, came to Chicago and eventually Sugar Grove in Lee Country where Henry was a blacksmith. He had also previously been in farming in the east.

In 1860 they moved to Eagle Point and became the owners of a big farm. Here they lived the rest of their lives and became the parents of ten children although two died as small children.

They were active members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Polo although Walburga had been active in the Catholic faith. They lived by their Christian faith.

Walburga was a very knowledgeable woman, good business woman, and good problem solver. Henry always went to her for advice and she lived by the Golden Rule. She was happiest in her home. They both were good neighbors and friends to all.

When Henry died in 1913, he had been a member of the Lutheran Church for 71 years. Walburga died in 1910. They both are buried in South Elkhorn Cemetery in Carroll County.

The name Walburga was a popular German name with several spellings. It could also be spelled Walberga, Wallburga, and Walpurgis.

When Walburga came to the United States, she used the spelling of “Walberga” and that is what they used in her obituary.

On her cemetery stone and the window of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the family used the original spelling of “Walburga.”

This afternoon, Charlotte hosted a watch party of “Les Miserables,” which will be the theme of the upcoming Lenten bible study.

Charlotte leads with interesting and thought-provoking sermons and lessons. We are grateful for her time and compassion.

On Saturday morning, I met my friend, Amy Sikyta, for breakfast in Polo. Our visit was long overdue and very much appreciated. We shared stories of our work, our children, and shared many laughs.

This past week has been busy with rehearsals for the upcoming musical, “Matilda.” Each week, the students surprise me with their unending energy.

Each night, they perform and repeat, over and over again. Their enthusiasm has yet to diminish.

Over the last few days, I received phone calls from each of my children. I am always overjoyed to hear their voices on the other end of the phone. Clint will be out of phone range for a while so I was especially glad to hear his laugh a few more

times.

My class schedule has been moving along at a quickened pace. With only a few months left in the semester, there is so much to learn and to do. It is good to know I am in the same boat as my classmates. We regularly share our stories of trying to balance work and school.

Over the weekend, I hung up my new shower curtain. It may sound like an easy task, but this new shower curtain is made up of nine large ruffles, three white, three light gray, and three dark gray needed to be ironed.

I have always enjoyed ironing, even as a kid. There was always a basket of clothes to be ironed. Using heat and steam to press the wrinkles out of shirts, skirts, and pants brought me such satisfaction.

Standing at the ironing board this weekend, I carefully pressed the wrinkles out of each ruffle, even going over them a second and third time and adding steam, as needed.

When I was happy with the final product, I went to hang it in the

bathroom.

I stood back to admire my work.

At first, I noticed a wrinkle near the top, then another, and more as my eyes moved toward the darker layers. Even with my careful and best efforts, there were still wrinkles.

That is how it is for us. No matter how hard we try to remain sinless, we can’t.

There will always be some wrinkle we can’t quite press. The good news is God doesn’t see the wrinkles. He only sees us.

His gift of Jesus washed away any wrinkle that remained. We can face each day knowing that we are forgiven.

We only need to ask to be made clean. There is no need for long hours of ironing. We are clean and wrinkle-free. What an amazing gift.

I hope to see you next week as we observe the Lenten season, remembering all that Jesus has done for us.

Come and spend time in praise and worship at our little church in the country. You are a welcomed part of our family.

West Carroll High school’s FFA week was held Feb 17-21 and on the Wednesday of that week, Illinois State Trooper Tracy Lillard spoke about driving safety.

The Polo FFA Officers including President Kayla Blum, Vice President Brandon Albano, Treasurer Kaylah Boelens, Secretary Faith Ukena, and Historian Sadie Baumann, were invited to the assembly and glad to have attended.

Lillard has been a state trooper for 19 years, and has three kids with her husband whom she refers to as “hashtag sexy”.

She advocates to reduce fatal car crashes through education and humor. She has a social media presence on Snapchat and Facebook.

Seven cannabis arrests made since legalization Sheriff polices legal cannabis

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Ogle County Sheriff’s Office has posted seven cannabis-related arrests on its website since recreational cannabis was legalized in Illinois on Jan. 1.

Arrests have been made for driving while under the influence, improper container of cannabis by a driver, improper container of cannabis by a passenger and unlawful possession of cannabis by a passenger.

According to the law, if you’re possessing cannabis in a vehicle, it must be kept in a sealed, odorproof, child-resistant container that is out of the driver’s reach.

Illinois residents over the age of 21 can legally possess maximums of 30 grams of cannabis flower, five grams of cannabis concentrate (oil) and 500 milligrams of THC in cannabis-infused products (edibles). Cannabis use is not allowed in a car or any place where a person could reasonably expect to be seen by others.

“We’re still just as aggressive as we were in December,” Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said. “Nothing has really changed on that front.

Whether it’s open in the vehicle or not, the only thing that’s changed is the paperwork that we do.”

Last year while still illegal, unlawful possession of cannabis was a civil citation, now misdemeanor arrests are made by the Sheriff’s Office for possessing more than the legal amount or not having it in the proper container.

VanVickle said cannabis-related issues have increased compared to this time last year, but that could just be due to the weather being nicer and more people being out. He’d like another five months to see how the new laws will affect things.

Improper container of cannabis has been the most popular arrest, with five incidents and six total individuals arrested in the county since Jan. 1. A Janesville, Wisconsin man was arrested on Jan. 1.

“We have seen specifically some people from out of state who think cannabis is legal in the state and

they can do whatever they want and have it in their vehicle unsealed and out of the proper packaging,” VanVickle said.

The sheriff’s office never received direction from the state on what containers would look like or if there was a common model or seal, VanVickle said.

Any cannabis product that is sold in a dispensary comes in a legal, sealed container.

Under the provisions of the law, that cannabis has to remain in that factory-sealed container for the entire time that it’s transported.

“And once you get it home and you open it and you consume that cannabis at home, you can’t put it back in the container and put it in your car and take it to your buddy’s house,” VanVickle said.

“That container is now spoiled. It can’t go anywhere. You could put it in your pocket and walk to your neighbor’s, but you can’t put it in a vehicle and go there.”

Policing forms of cannabis such as gummies has been another issue the sheriff’s office has been unclear on.

“That’s difficult,” VanVickle said. “Again, they’re supposed to be in a sealed container. That helps. But if it’s laying loose in the car you don’t know. They just look like candy. That part of the law that is pretty gray.”

A potential increase in driving while under the influence of cannabis has been VanVickle’s chief concern. He does believe there has been an “uptick” in DUIs since the legalization. A DUI arrest was made on Feb. 12 and coupled with unlawful possession of cannabis-improper container. There was no mention of alcohol in the online report.

The process of a cannabis DUI is daunting, VanVickle said. A blood test must be done within a twohour timeframe. If the test is refused, officials have to get a search warrant from a judge in Oregon. The test then must be done at a hospital, which Oregon doesn’t have. The test would have to be done in Rochelle, Dixon or Rockford.

“For us, the timeframe is extremely difficult,” VanVickle said. “We’re just trying to work through that and come up with different solutions.”

Attending sheriff’s association meetings and getting information has helped VanVickle in the transition to policing legal recreational cannabis. The sheriffs he’s spoken to, specifically north of I-80, haven’t backed off at all.

He noted DuPage County has “doubled down” and has sent its deputies to become drug recognition experts and brought in phlebotomists and additional K9s. Ogle County still has a K9, but it was not used in any of the improper container arrests, Lt. Danielle Hardesty said.

VanVickle also learned at a recent sheriff’s conference that there’s been an “uptick” in largeamount cannabis arrests across the state.

“Hundreds of pounds,” VanVickle said. “We’ve all seen the receipts with prices that people are paying and the amount of taxes people are paying.

Obviously the illegal market hasn’t been phased by it at all.”

Oregon Police Department The Oregon Police has been policing cannabis differently than the Sheriff’s Office has. Chief of Police Darin DeHaan said that his department has been writing civil citations for cannabis violations and not making misdemeanor arrests.

Two traffic stops occurred last week where citations were written for cannabis violations. One involved a 17-year-old juvenile possessing cannabis illegally and the other saw a Davis Junction man not having it in the correct container in his vehicle, DeHaan said.

The department will continue with the civil citation approach until it receives approval from Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow to do it differently.

“Eric is on the side of less prosecution of the individual until there is more clarity,” DeHaan said.

Perry to offer genealogy workshop at the Depot Laurie Carlin Perry from the Rochelle Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will present a Genealogy Workshop at the Oregon Depot at the monthly, Those Were the Days program on Feb. 29, at 10 a.m.

“Laurie was thrilled to gain admittance to DAR in January of 2018 and since that time has completed DAR course requirements to serve as a

Volunteer Field Genealogist,” said Kris Gilbert, a Those Were the Days organizer. “She currently serves as her Chapter’s Registrar, District II DAR Service for Veterans Chairman, and Membership Vice Chairman for the Illinois State Organization.”

Perry considers her two best assets to be a curious mind and force of will.

“In the past, those traits were applied to our nation’s defense but Laurie’s now excited to apply her love of solving mysteries and digging out a story’s details to help community members learn of their family histories, many of which include Revolutionary War patriot ancestors—frequently to the surprise of people that thought they knew where they came from.”

Byron Station topped the company’s and country’s average run time by operating at full power more than 96.9 percent of the time in 2019. The always-on aspect of nuclear power isn’t lost on its residents.

“Living in this area my whole life, I can attest to the importance of the station for both its important part in electricity distribution and

its positive effect on the economy,” said Sarah Downs, executive director of the Byron Area Chamber of Commerce. “When one reactor goes offline for a maintenance project, there’s still a positive outcome as local businesses see a big uptick in sales. With hundreds of contractors temporarily staying in the area during refueling projects, our business owners are staffing up – with

some even extending their hours – to take care of the workers visiting our shops, restaurants and stores.”

Byron Generating Station is located between Oregon and Byron on German Church Road.

“With both units at full power, the site produces almost 2,500 megawatts, enough electricity to power more than 2.3 million average American homes,” the press release said.

The Byron Generating Station celebrated 4,500 consecutive days of producing carbon-free energy for Illinois and beyond on Monday with a special celebration that included a replica cake of the nuclear facility.

“Employees, retirees and local leaders gathered Monday to mark the occasion.

“Oregon’s own O’s Bakery has designed an incredible edible replica of the plant for the occasion,” said Paul Demsey, Exelon Communications officer.

Construction work started at the Exelon Generation location in Byron in 1975, with the Unit 1 reactor coming online in 1985 and Unit 2 in 1987.

“Nuclear reactors like the ones at the dual-unit Byron Station are very reliable, running around the clock,” according to a Exelon press release.

“Every 18 months, operators shut down a reactor for only few weeks to support refueling and maintenance.

Over the past 13 years, when one reactor shut down for maintenance, the other unit stayed online allowing the facility to continuously provide electricity to the region.

“The nuclear plant’s 700-plus workforce prides itself on precision monitoring and maintenance programs, which help the plant sustain its status as a model of reliability,” the release said.

“The plant generates enough carbon-free electricity to power more than 2.3 million homes and businesses while preventing the release of nearly 12 million metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Over the lifetime of both units’ operation, that’s the equivalent of taking approximately 2.5 million cars off of the road every year,” the release said.

“Clean power-generating facilities like Byron Station are on the front lines of combating climate change,” said Byron Station Site Vice President Mark Kanavos. “Americans want carbon-free electricity, which our nuclear plants deliver to millions every day. They also want reliability, and nuclear plants are the unquestioned champion of reliable electricity production in this country.”

The average nuclear plant in the United States operated at full power about 92 percent of the time of 2019.

The Byron Forest Preserve District will be hosting its fourth lecture of the 2020 Winter Lecture Series — Life through the Lens of Kodak: The History of Personal Photography on Sunday, March 1.

The program starts at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum, 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Chicago actor R.J. Lindsey will portray George Eastman, founder of Kodak. He will present a slide program and display vintage cameras to tell the Kodak story.

As a result of Eastman Kodak’s affordable and easy to use cameras, a record of every American family event began to appear in photo albums over a hundred and twenty years ago.

Aireloom Music Studio will be presenting “Beware the Ides of March!�, its second annual youth music competition for ages 12-24 on March 22 at 3 p.m. at the Northside BarbaQ Event Room Stage in Oregon at 117 N. Fourth St. Aireloom is reaching out to all young musicians to register and asking everyone to come out to support the future of music in the area.

The two categories are soloists or duets and bands. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges. There will be three prizes awarded for both categories. First place will receive recording time at Aireloom’s professional

recording studio, valued at approximately $400. Second place wins a $100 cash prize and third place wins $50 in cash. All musicians will be given very generous participation prizes donated by sponsors. Musician registration is required by March 15 and the fee is $10 per person.

Unfortunately, Boomgarden was called for a charge on the next possession and the Cardinals had two more turnovers, leading to easy scores for Eastland.

Derek DeVries and Cornelius scored to close out a 19-point third quarter for Forreston on 7-for-11 shooting.

Eastland also was 7-for-11, but did not make any threes.

The Cardinals forced two turnovers to start the final quarter and a DeVries free throw and Neuschwander basket made it 39-36.

That’s when five turnovers and two missed shots proved costly for Forreston.

Before Tuesday’s 1A regional against Eastland, Coach Justin Shiltz of Forreston made the following comment: “If we are able to put four quarters together, we can compete with anyone.”

That proved to be very insightful in a 57-46 loss to the Cougars Trailing by as much as 21-4 in the second quarter and 30-15 early in the third quarter, the Cardinals suddenly put 10 solid minutes together.

The end result was Forreston in possession of the ball and a chance to tie the favored Cougars in the fourth quarter.

Down 39-36, Forreston turned the ball over and never got back into the game, as Eastland went on a 12-0 run.

“We have played two quarters, sometimes three,” Shiltz said.

“Only against Galena in the Aquin Shootout have we put four high level quarters together.”

Besides the inability to play a complete game, Forreston was hurt by untimely turnovers. After Ethan Greenfield made the only basket of the first quarter, the Cardinals went six straight possessions with a turnover.

Greenfield continued to be Forreston’s only offense in the second quarter with two more 3-pointers.

It wasn’t until Riley Cornelius alertly made a long pass to Jordan Neuschwander for an easy score, did someone other than Greenfield make a first-half basket.

The Cougar 24-14 halftime lead went up to 30-15, with Lane Christians and Kellen Henze making quick baskets. Eastland was playing without its top post player, Brock Coatney, who was out with the flu.

Even without Coatney, the Cougars looked to be in complete control and make it four wins over Forreston this season.

Cornelius and Kolten Dorty had other ideas.

A Cornelius basket cut the lead to 30-18. Then, things really heated up for the Cardinals. Dorty nailed two 3-pointers within second of each other, making it 30-23 with 5:21 left.

Cornelius added another three and big man Jakob Boomgarden tried his hand beyond the arc. The result was Forreston’s fourth consecutive three-point basket and only a 33-29 deficit.

Marcos down Royals 53-40 in regional opener

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com With its best player Tucker Mumford already sidelined with the flu, Polo’s basketball team took another blow Monday when top shooter Jace Coffey left the 1A Polo Regional opener against Hinckley-Big Rock with an ankle injury in the second quarter.

With juniors Colton Gunder and Logan Kindle stepping into those roles, the Marcos survived a slight scare to beat the Royals 53-40.

“Gunder and Kindle had great games for us,” Polo coach Matt Messer said.

It was Kindle getting Polo (14-17) going in the second quarter on three straight baskets. The first two were alertly-thrown passes under the basket by Gunder and Bennett Soltow. Kindle then popped a 15-footer for a 20-9 lead.

“We moved the ball well in the first half,” Messer said.

Right after that, Coffey (8 first quarter points) injured in ankle on a fluke play far away from the ball.

“When Jace goes out, that hurts,” Gunder said.

“He’s a key offensive and defensive guy. Coach had me primarily handling the ball, but the whole team is capable of that.”

The Royals (8-24) failed to capitalize on Mumford and Coffey’s absences. They had several chances to climb back in the game, but could never get any closer than six points from the second quarter on.

“Whenever we made a run, they had an answer,” HBR coach Seth Sanderson said. “We couldn’t get over the hump. It seemed like we were always trudging uphill.”

The Royals were also hurt on the boards, with Polo having an 42-26 advantage. Other than the three shots in a row by Kindle, Polo never was able to get into a rhythm from the field. But the 8-man football champs physically beat HBR to missed shots.

“Scotty Prerost banged with their big guys,” Messer said. “I like how Soltow played, too.”

Senior Brody Glawe gave Polo its largest lead, 37-20, on his second 3 of the third quarter. On the play before, Gunder found Kindle under the basket for a score, drawing the ire of Sanderson.

Quickly calling a timeout, the usually mild-mannered HBR coach laid into team for “not talking” on help-defense. That pep talk apparently sparked the Royals, as they scored the next nine points.

“We struggled with their pressure late in the third and early in the fourth,” Messer said.

Carson Pickert (13 points) led the charge with basket to close the third quarter and another early in the fourth. Sandwiched around that were a pair of scores by freshman Ben Hintzsche.

The Marcos went into a stall with 6:20 left and ahead 37-29. That’s when Gunder was at his best, calmly sinking 8 of 10 free throws the rest of the way.

“He iced the game for us,” Messer said. “As a team, we also found a way to get mentally tougher down the stretch.”

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Hunter Swanson and Hintzsche pulled the Royals within 42-36 with 2 minutes left in the game. That’s as close as HBR would come, with Soltow and Gunder making six free throws in a row.

“At the beginning of the year, I was making 40 percent,” Gunder said. “Cliff [Bardell, an assistant coach] gave me advice on shooting. When I listen to him, it works. He was the key in this.”

Kindle had 14 points and Gunder added 13 for Polo. Soltow scored eight. On Wednesday, the No. 7 seed Marcos move on to face No. 2 Dakota, an 86-12 winner over Leland.

The status of Mumford and Coffey is uncertain.

“I was bed-ridden for a week,” said Mumford, in street clothes on the bench. “I lost 10 pounds and am dealing with headaches right now. Hopefully, I’ll be back Wednesday.”

According the Messer, Coffey is more doubtful for that game. His ankle was being iced, and with track & field season approaching, the defending 1A discus runner-up would not want to do anything to jeopardize his senior year.

Polo senior drops first matches, but enjoyed the tourney

He ended up losing in the third place match to take fourth.

“I thought I had a chance at the end,” McKenna said, “but he was really tough, and I just couldn’t get it done.”

Head Coach Jesse Culbertson said it was a typical match for McKenna.

“He lacks experience but not heart,” Culbertson said. “Marcus just doesn’t know how to give up.”

He added that those qualities are what made him such a great leader in the wrestling room.

“There are some kids coming up behind him that have seen what he

has done, and I am hoping it will inspire them. We like being down here.”

The first round wrestleback against eighth ranked Charlie Patterson of Auburn didn’t go very well.

Patterson got the first takedown and hooked a cradle for two points before he worked a half nelson for three points at the first period buzzer.

After Patterson escaped to start the second, McKenna fought through a headlock for a takedown, but those would be his only points of the match.

McKenna kept trying, but his duck under in the third was countered and he lost a 14-2 major decision. Patterson took sixth.

McKenna said he was looking forward to getting something to eat, maybe pizza.

“It has been pretty hard maintaining my weight all season and I am tired of being hungry.”

When asked what he was going to do next he answered, “I don’t know, maybe track, maybe baseball. Right now I am both happy and a little disappointed and just want to enjoy the rest of my trip down here.”

The trip to Champaign was a little shorter than Marcus McKenna wanted.

The Polo senior was excited to qualify for the IHSA Individual State Finals, but he only got to wrestle in two matches.

“It was really fun and a great experience being here, but it would have been a lot better if I had at least won once ,” he said. “I wanted to make a better showing but I am happy my career ended as a qualifier.”

He met second ranked Ty Baxter of LeRoy in the opening round. Baxter was the Olympia Sectional champion and came into the tournament with a 39-1 record.

McKenna hung with Baxter early, answering a quick takedown with a reverse out of an attempted cradle.

He gave up a reverse as the period wound down and trailed 4-2 after one.

McKenna tied it up when he caught a granby for two points and switched to a headlock but was reversed from there.

Then Baxter found a cradle and added two points with thirty seconds left in the second to take an 8-4 lead.

The LeRoy wrestler added a takedown with just under a minute left in the third. McKenna caught a headlock on a reverse with five seconds to go but no backpoints and he went down 10-6.

Hawks basketball team is entertaining to watch A

t the beginning of the year, Oregon basketball coach Quinn Virgil promised his team would be entertaining to watch.

How very true. There is an element of uncertainty with them. From game to game, night to night, you never know what you’re going to get.

Since this column has to be done several days before the paper comes out, I have no knowledge of how Oregon did in the regional.

I do know this. They are just as capable of losing to lower seed Stillman Valley in Monday’s game as they are of beating higher seed Winnebago on Wednesday.

Now, that’s entertainment.

Friday’s game against Stillman was an example of that. In the first half, an undermanned Cardinal team that was missing four starters, gave Oregon all they could handle.

It wasn’t until the second half that the Hawks put the game away. And, I don’t think it is a case of how goes Trey Woolsey is how goes the Hawks.

No, there are plenty of other guys in the line-up that turn up the afterburners and turn a game around. That part of the entertainment package – this is more than a 1-man show.

If all five players on the floor are operating at high gear, the Hawks might be better than ‘Bago.

But, can they avoid being flummoxed by the savvy Indians?

That is, stay away from boneheaded plays, turnovers and emotional lapses?

Oh, one more pre-season assessment by coach Virgil. He promised to be rangy and athletic on defense, but wasn’t sure about shooting. Defense is definitely the calling card of this team and those concerns about shooting still ring true.

Did you know that Yorkville Christian, with

only 35 students, is ranked No. 7 in 1A. They won a sectional last year and appear to be an example of what can happen when a group of really good basketball players decide to assemble at one locale.

Even with an enrollment of 35, they are playing 3A and 4A schools. That’s illogical.

Lest you think they are only a basketball school, they had seven competitors at the Oregon wrestling sectional.

Now that the individual state wrestling tournament is over, it is time for some mediocre dual team competition among 1A and 2A teams.

Still not sure why the IHSA insists on having both an individual and dual state series when there isn’t the quality to support the dual portion anymore. Many years ago there was, but not anymore.

With the primary election coming up, the old adage about one vote making a difference could apply to about anything – like girls high school bowling.

At the state meet with five bowlers on each team rolling a six-game series, what would be the odds of two teams separated by a single vote, I mean pin?

That’s what a happened between Oregon co-op and Sycamore and that 1-pin difference is what sent Oregon to Saturday’s finals and Sycamore packing up for home.

I did not realize how much of an influence Winnebago had on the Oregon team, until learning the top three Hawk bowlers are actually Indians.

Both schools would struggle to keep its programs going alone, so why not join forces. It paid dividends at the state meet and earned Oregon some good publicity.

We’ve seen first-hand how Forreston and Polo have benefited from such an arrangement in track and field. Unfortunately for Polo, they don’t get the same acclaim downstate with the team’s moniker as Forreston co-op.

Lots of good news on the 8-man football front for Polo. AFC is going 8-man in 2021 and Milledgeville and Amboy are considering it.

Word on the street is that there are other area programs looking into it and there has also been keen interest in other parts of the state. There are already 23 teams committed for this fall, including South Beloit and Kirkland Hiawatha.

Even though Kirkland has won its first-ever playoff game this year, they came to a realization they do not have enough boys to keep things going.

Just as well. They were in a dysfunctional football conference that is now down to three teams, including Rockford Christian.

Will Rockford Christian ever try to get back in the BNC for football or go the independent route?

Either way is no-win situation for them.

We are just a mom and dad who have experienced a tragic nightmare that forever changes an individual’s life.

Megan (Swaziek) Wells’ precious life was taken from us in a boating crash on June 24, 2016 on the Rock River near Oregon.

There is no greater crime than to take the precious life of another human being. Then add to that the person who took that life is given 30 months’ probation after pleading guilty to a felony charge for causing her death.

The Ogle County state’s attorney made decisions and actions that devalued and disrespected Megan during the criminal case and personally said to our faces that “there was no crime committed here.”

This sends an unforgettable message regarding the state’s attorney’s integrity, dedication, honesty, values and morals dedicated to human life for those

who live in Ogle County and those who visit the area.

If the state’s attorney has the qualities expressed, it would be expected that he would demonstrate them by requesting an independent, non-biased and through investigation (FBI, DOJ, etc.) to assist in getting to the truth of the evidence and questions that still surround this crash that took Megan from us that evening.

do not want any family to go through the nightmare by bringing “what was done in the dark – into the light.”

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Feb. 15 Austin D. Mitchell, 18, of German Valley, was issued a citation at 5:11 p.m. for unlawful window tint. This violation occurred in the 100 block of N. 4th Street.

Feb. 17 At 9:02 a.m., police investigated a car vs sign at the corner of W. Washington and N. 2nd Street involving a 2009 Chevrolet driven by Debra L. Grove, 72, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Edward H. Hendrickson, 59, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 8:20 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 400 block of S. 6th Street.

Feb. 18 Erika L. Austin, 17, of Sterling, was issued a citation at 5:08 p.m. for speeding, 43 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity Feb. 18 At approximately 9:39 p.m., deputies attempted to stop a vehicle for traffic violations at the intersection of Illinois 251 and Interstate 88 in Rochelle. The vehicle, a black BMW passenger car, did not stop for deputies and fled from the scene.

The vehicle was later located on Creston Road in rural Rochelle after being involved in a minor accident.

The driver, Joseph Calamia, 44, of Wheaton, was taken to Rochelle Community Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently discharged.

Calamia was charged with driving whlle under the influence, unlawful possession of controlled substance, aggravated fleeing to elude, driving while license revoked, reckless driving, possession of stolen property and numerous traffic violations.

Calamia was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond. Sheriff’s deputies were assisted by the Rochelle Police Department and the Illinois State Police.

Feb. 19 Robert Puckett, 23, of Loves Park, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for not having a valid driver’s license. Puckett posted bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail. He is scheduled to return to court on Feb. 20.

Tiffany Fabish, 35, of Davis Junction, was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear. Fabish’s bond was set at $4,103 pending a court appearance.

Jessica Pulliam, 32, of Rockford was arrested on an outstanding Ogle County warrant for failure to appear.

Pulliam’s bond was set at $1,988 pending a court appearance.

Feb. 21 Gene Wheller, 25, of Rockford, was arrested at 3:59 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop at the intersection of Kishwaukee Road and Condon Road, just into Winnebago County. Wheller was additionally issued citations for speeding and operating an uninsured vehicle. Wheller was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Brandon Barber, 36, of Stillman Valley, was arrested at 10:32 a..m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop in the 8500 block of East Valley View Drive. Barber was also issued citations for operating an uninsured vehicle and operating a motor vehicle with registration suspended. Barber was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Feb. 22 Richard Davis, 47, of Oregon was arrested at 12:25 a.m. for driving while license suspended after a traffic

stop in the 400 block of North Sixth Street in Oregon.

Davis was also issued citations for operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane usage. Davis was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Elias Frankfother, 24, of Chana, was arrested for reckless discharge of a firearm, violation of the concealed carry firearms act and disorderly conduct after Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a residence in Chana for the report of shots being fired from a firearm at 1:39 a.m.

Chet Harrolle, 38, of Leaf River, was also arrested and charged with aggravated assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in the Chana incident. Both Frankfother and Harrolle were confined at the Ogle County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

Deputies were assisted by the Illinois State Police and the Oregon Police Department.

Feb. 23 Alejandro Sorto, 33, of Rockford, was arrested at 1:21 p.m. for not having a valid driver’s license and no valid registration after a traffic stop in the 6000 block of North Illinois 251. Alejandro was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Feb. 24 Jacob H. Magana, 29, of Sterling, was arrested for failure to appear. Magana bond was set at $369 pending a court appearance.

Preliminary year-end weather statistics really put farmers’ struggles into perspective, as 2019 measures up as the third-wettest on record in Illinois.

Precipitation across the state averaged a whopping 50.82 inches for the year, about a foot above the 30-year normal.

Though the numbers have yet to be finalized, if the statistics hold, the only wetter years than 2019 on record in Illinois are 1993 (51.18 inches) and 2009 (50.96 inches), according to Trent Ford, state climatologist with the Illinois State Water Survey.

“The total (precipitation) didn’t quite break the record, but the way the precipitation came was really the story of 2019,” Ford said.

The widespread nature of heavy precipitation events and flooding, along with the high frequency of storms, made this a particularly challenging year for farmers. Some of the heaviest bands of precipitation fell during spring planting and at harvest.

Illinois experienced the wettest January to June on record last year, while October precipitation averaged 5.21 inches across the state, 2 inches above normal.

For instance, the number of dry days between rain events was the fewest on record in Peoria last spring.

The impact from all the moisture included massive planting delays, record prevented plant acres, delayed harvest, increased crop drying costs and fewer opportunities for fall fieldwork, including wheat planting and applications of anhydrous ammonia that could reverberate into this spring.

Meanwhile, temperatures jumped all over the board last year, but actually ended up at a statewide average of 52.2 degrees, just .2 of a degree below the 30-year normal.

This, after a new state record low of minus-38 occurred Jan. 31 in Mount Carroll, and 51 weather sta-

tions recorded the coldest Halloween on record.

The northwest corner of the state wound up with an average temperature .6 of a degree below normal for the year while the southeast corner was .7 of a degree warmer than normal.

As for the most recent month, December finished as the 18th warmest on record in the state with an average temperature of 35.2 degrees. Precipitation last month averaged 2.51 inches, nearly an inch below average.

“After a relatively dry December, we’re looking better than we were a month ago or at this time last year,” Ford said. “The warm, dry conditions helped soil (moisture) and streams drop back near normal.”

And that could be beneficial given the most recent outlook, which favors elevated chances of above-normal precipitation January through March.

“That doesn’t mean we’ll have another 2019,” Ford said, but “just based on trends and the atmosphere, there’s a decent chance we’ll be wetter than normal into spring.”

Feb. 15 Jose G. Huerta Perez, 55, of Fitchburg, Wisconsin, was stopped for speeding, improper lane usage, and failure to signal when required on Interstate 88 eastbound at milepost 78 in Ogle County. He was charged with aggravated driving while under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol by a driver, no valid driver’s license, no insurance,

speeding, improper lane usage, and failure to signal when required. Huerta Perez was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Feb. 23 At 9:19 p.m., the state police received a report of a vehicle on the railroad tracks near Jack Dame Road in Rochelle.

Travis W. Baker, 46, of St. Louis, Missouri, was approached after driving his vehicle .5 miles down the railroad tracks. The vehicle became disabled at

that location. Baker was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, and improper lane usage. Baker was released on an I-bond.

Candra M. Hollis, 43, of Peoria, was a passenger in a vehicle stopped for speeding at 8:16 p.m. on Interstate 39 southbound at milepost 104 in Ogle County. She was wanted on a Peoria County warrant for failure to appear for driving while license revoked. Hollis was transported to the Ogle County Jail.
