19-year-old charged with sexual abuse

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A Forreston man has been arrested for sexual abuse and child pornography following an investigation by Forreston police.

Devan R. Joens, 19, was arrested on Feb. 12 for having sexual contact with a 13-year-old female minor, Forreston Police Chief Michael Boomgarden said in a Feb. 17 press release.

“After an investigation an arrest warrant was issued for the following charges: one count of criminal sexual abuse, a class A misdemeanor, and three counts of possession of child pornography, each a class three felony,”

Boomgarden said.

Joens was taken into custody with out incident and transported to the Ogle County jail where he was held in lieu of bond. Joens’ bond was $10,000, and he posted it immediately.

Joens will be required to register as a sex offender if convicted on any of the charges against him, Forreston Police Officer Chris Thiel said at Monday’s Village Board meeting.

The criminal sexual abuse charge is a misdemeanor due to the fact that Joens and the victim were within five years of each other in age (18 and 13) when the alleged crime occurred, Thiel said.

The investigation into Joens started in November 2019.

Rockwood is hired as new police chief Rockwood replaces departing Jon Mandrell

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com The Polo City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday to hire Tim Rockwood as chief of the Polo Police Department.

Rockwood is replacing Jon Mandrell, who will officially depart on Feb. 24 for a position at Sauk Valley Community College as vice president for academics and student services.

Rockwood has three years of experience with the Polo Police Department and previously worked with the city’s street department before the city sent him to the state police academy.

“You want someone committed to the community,” Polo Mayor Doug Knapp said. “He’s a natural leader. He bleeds blue and gold. We wanted somebody we knew was going to be there for a while.”

The council had to make a change to its employee handbook to pave the way for the hiring of Rockwood. The handbook previously required at least five years of police experience for a chief.

They understood Rockwood’s lack of experience, but Mandrell has been working with him to become chief.

“Tim is a great officer and ideal for the position and has his family settled here,” Mandrell said. “Age and experience for a chief varies. It has to do with background. He’s very versatile and has become a great investigator. That’s a lot of what being a chief is about.”

Public works staff reduction The board voted unanimously to reduce full-time staff in the city’s public works department from five to four, effective May. 1.

Public Works Director Kendall Kyker said his department could save $45,000 in salary by downsizing a full-time $52,000 position and hiring on a part-time worker for the summer that makes $7,000.

“That part-time helper should be able to do what our fifth man has been doing all along,” Kyker said. “I think it’s just the best move for the city at this time.”

Kyker added that there isn’t enough work to go around during the winters

when outside work is limited. During the last snow, four employees had the entire town plowed in three hours.

Parking The council considered taking action on overnight parking restrictions on Oregon Street and eliminating parking on Illinois 26 at the meeting. It eventually decided to talk further with residents of those areas on how those potential parking changes could impact them.

FORRESTON VILLAGE BOARD

BDD Guidelines The village board voted unanimously to approve a set of Business Development District guidelines for local businesses that will be seeking money set aside to help with their projects and improvements.

The village gets an extra one percent sales tax from businesses within Forreston that amounts to between $4,000 and $5,000 per month.

The money can be used to reimburse businesses for improvements as well as village improvement projects like implementing LED street lights and sidewalk work.

“This will help us relay to the businesses the procedure, what they can apply for and what we’ll cover,” Forreston Village President Mark Metzger said. “And other opportunities as far as anniversary or grand opening monies that can become available.”

Buss expressed some concerns that larger projects could eat up a large portion of the BDD fund before other businesses could take advantage of it as well.

“I wouldn’t want to dwindle the fund down,” Buss said.

FABA Banners A BDD application was unanimously approved at the meeting from the Forreston Area Business Association for banners that will cost approximately $4,900 total that will be put up on light poles around town.

The banners will likely have four different themes to them, including welcome to Forreston, Forreston area businesses, the Forreston cardinal and one potentially encompassing the village’s history.

The Forreston Village Board approved an ordinance Monday night amending its policy on Utility Task Vehicles (UTVs).

The ordinance passed 5-0 with Village Trustee Gary Buss abstaining.

Residents will now be able to drive UTVs on roads during the winter and spring after previously only being allowed between April 30 and Nov. 1. Permit fees were changed from $75 for one year to $75 for three years.

Village board members requested Monday that the registration stickers include an expiration date and that inspections be done each time one is bought or renewed.

“There’s a few things I like about this,” Village Trustee Ken Toms said. “It states that no person shall operate one unless they have an Illinois Drivers’ License. I also like that they have to carry insurance, whatever the state requires. I also like that the first offense of wrongdoing is a $75-$500 fine and the second is a three year suspension. I really think there’s been some thought put into this.”

At a meeting last month, Forreston resident and Police Officer Chris Thiel spoke to the board during public comment and asked them to consider bringing their code closer to surrounding communities.

Forreston Police Chief Mike Boomgarden agreed at that meeting and said he has no problem with them being driven in the winter or registration being longer term.

Polo Pharmacy hosted a grand opening event

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Despite opening late last year, spirits were high at the Polo Pharmacy on Feb. 12 as it held its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony.

Representatives from the pharmacy, the city of Polo and the Polo Chamber of Commerce were on hand for the event.

Polo Pharmacy is located at 11 E. Mason St. Owners Kip and Karrie Sabinson, of Warren, own two pharmacies and three telepharmacies in the area. Polo’s qualifies as the latter, using an off-site pharmacist and a technician on site.

Polo was without a pharmacy for nearly two years.

“Business has been real good,” Kip Sabinson said. “The support from everyone has been great. It took us a little longer to get opened up due to regulations and things, but here we are and we’re excited.”

The pharmacy is open from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

By Karen Merlak A little more snow and a little more ice falls to the ground. And yet, we are a little closer to spring.

There are definitely more birds in the area flying in a northerly direction. The anticipation of long days filled with sunshine spurs us forward. God’s gifts are perfect.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Sandra Ford. Our theme for the morning was love. The message of love was heard throughout the hymns and sermon. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for Katelyn, Laura, and Harper.

Chuck Kearns sang the hymn “Fill Us with Your Love,” accompanied by his wife, Bev Kearns on the piano. There was electrical work

being done down the road from our church.

Halfway through the service, our electricity was restored.

After the service, a group of nearly twenty of us headed to Sterling for a Valentine’s Day brunch. Everyone gathered around for a great meal and even better fellowship. The meal was completed by Valentine cookies shared by Don and Vicki Hay. Practices for the musical continued this past week. The performances are less than a month away and everyone is pouring everything they have into the rehearsals. I have really enjoyed spending the time with Polo’s middle school and high school students.

Band and choir director, Jamie Apperson, with the assistance of Beth Wiegmann, and the entire cast will present the musical “Matilda” on Friday and Saturday evenings on March 13 and 14 at the high school.

It has been a busy week filled with work days and school nights. In between, I found time to visit with each of my children on the phone.

We shared stories about our week and magically the distance doesn’t seem so far away.

On Friday night, I encountered some car trouble that left me stopped on the side of the road several times before making it to my brother’s house. I let my van cool down while I went inside to visit.

My brother, Ben Bittinger, his wife, Jo, and their son, Garrett, presented me with Valentine treats that helped ease the pain of what was to come next. It was time to get a new car.

My van, that I lovingly named “Bessie,” because of her resemblance to an old cow, was ready to be retired. During the last nine years, that van has made trips to Minnesota to see Stephanie, made several trips to work, through ice, snow, and sun, and hauled my kids to everything.

Like most things, my van was worn out. With the support of my good friend, Deb Ohlwine, I went car shopping. I drove home in a much newer vehicle. One that will make many more trips and carry many more memories.

This week in church, I was surprised to see significant changes in the sanctuary. Large pieces have been removed to reveal decades of wear underneath the carpeted areas.

After more than a year of discussions, the move is really happening.

Our building has served us well.

With each afternoon of packing pictures and materials, we are packing the love, fellowship, and rich memories. The bond in our church family grows stronger with each week. The great news is we want to include you, too.

The bond of love shared between friends in Christ is unbreakable. It bends, changes direction, stretches beyond what we can imagine, but it doesn’t tear. God’s example of love lives through us. His love survives through our past and prepares us for the future.

I hope to see you next week in our church in the country. We don’t have many more weeks in the old building. Please come and visit us and share in the love that makes us a church family from Pine Creek.

COUNTY BOARD

507 Jefferson Street House The board voted unanimously to demolish and remove the house it owns at 507 Jefferson St. in Oregon.

The county board purchased the property in May 2016 for $65,000. It was one of the first that was purchased with the county’s 50-year plan in mind.

In June of 2017 asbestos removal was finished in the house. Since then, it has been used in training exercises for various first responders including the Sheriff’s Office and fire departments.

“Its useful life has now been exhausted,” Board Member Zach Oltmanns said. “It would be a good time to take this building down.”

The work would be completed by the Ogle County Highway Department. The cost would not exceed $15,000, Oltmanns said.

Ogle County 911 Coordinator Sandy Beitel made a presentation on Next Generation 911 at Tuesday’s Ogle County Board meeting.

Ogle County has joined forces with eight other counties to make a Northern Illinois 911 system that will be based on new technology. The Northern Illinois Next Generation Alliance (NINGA) includes Boone, Bureau, Carroll, DeKalb, JoDaviess, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago Counties.

Beitel has been working on the 911 system in Ogle County since 1991.

This project started shortly after the NIU shooting on Feb. 14, 2008.

“In our current 911 system we always thought that we backed up DeKalb County and they were our backup,” Beitel said. “The day of the shooting, we weren’t getting any calls and I couldn’t believe it. We found the telephone company changed our routing and we didn’t know about it.”

Ogle and DeKalb Counties began working together on a new system and decided to ask other entities since they were already sharing equipment.

All of the 911 traffic will be moved to an internet protocol basis. The calls are answered at public safety answering points (PSAP) at the Sheriff’s Office and a secondary one in Rochelle.

The geographical information systems data in Ogle County allow 911 calls to be pinpointed to a location that’s not a static address. That is crucial to the future in 911 services.

“We are so fortunate in this county that we have a very strong GIS department,” Beitel said.

Beitel said Next Generation 911 will meet the needs of today’s current wireless mobile society. The system will accept new different forms of inputs including text messages, images, video, telematics, sensors and enhanced subscriber information.

“We have 32 million Americans that are deaf, hard of hearing, speech-impaired and currently they have to rely on old technology to reach emergency services,” Beitel said. “And that’s not the way it should be. That’s one of the biggest promises for Next Generation 911.”

Sharing the equipment with neighboring counties will help to lower costs of 911 services. There will also be portable 911 stations where calls can be answered anywhere with internet service.

LOCAL HISTORY

The windows at St. Mark’s have a rich history

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society Today is our 69th wedding anniversary and a bit of a different day than on the day of our wedding.

That day many years ago it was melting out and the water was running down the street.

Today we have snow and it is one of those days when you just want to sit by the window and watch those big snowflakes as they come down.

We are also getting ready for an anniversary at our church, St. Mark’s Lutheran in Polo. Early in May we will be celebrating our 150th Anniversary.

Each Sunday we are finding out about the history of our church and this past Sunday we celebrated the 40th Year of the Ordination of People

of Color.

It is interesting to hear how we have grown during these past years.

I became involved when Linda Gall asked me to help with researching the stained glass windows of our present church. This church building of course is not the same one that was originally built many years ago.

The fire of March 5, 1928 destroyed much of that particular building, but the stone work survived and we rebuilt using the blue limestone originally hauled in from the quarry.

It has also been referred to many times as “The Graystone House of Worship” even though the stone was really blue limestone. The color has perhaps changed over the years.

FUNDRAISING EVENT

FFA Alumni spaghetti dinner set for March 11

The Polo FFA Alumni will host a spaghetti dinner to raise funds for scholarships for Polo seniors pursuing a degree in an agricultural field.

The fundraising dinner will be Wednesday, March 11, from - 5-7 p.m. in the Centennial Elementary School cafeteria.

Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for kids ages 12 and under. The dinner includes spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, dessert and a drink.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance by contacting any Polo FFA Alumni member or Ginger Albano at 815-946-9098. Tickets must be pur-

chased prior to March 1.

50/50 Raffle tickets will also be available that evening. Winners need not be present to win.

My brother always has wondered if the stone needs to be cleaned. But many things are needed for a church and the cleaning of the stone did not seem to be necessary.

When the church burned in 1928 many new stained glass windows were needed and the families of the early church members donated the windows in memory or in honor of their family.

As I have grown up in the church, each Sunday I would notice the names and wonder who those people might have been and what part did they play in the church.

The window over the alter is such a beautiful window of “Christ Praying in the Garden” and in such a predominate spot. The window was given in memory of Henry Graeh-

ling, Sr. and his wife Walburga. I found the name to be unusual and wondered where it originated.

Helping with the windows has given me a chance to find out some history of the families. We worked diligently in the fall and then quit for over the holidays.

Now the anniversary is coming up rapidly and I need to get back out the information and see where we need to go to finish the history of the stained glass windows.

Each week I will tell you about some family in our church and the part they played in the settling of our community.

When you look at the windows the names will start to have some meaning as they worked in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

PLAN TO DONATE Polo High School students to host blood drive on Feb. 25 Polo High School Student Council will sponsor a blood drive on Tuesday, Feb. 25 from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the High School Gym at 100 S. Union Ave. in Polo.

Polo High School Student Council is encouraging community members to join them in donating blood as a part of regularly scheduled routine appointments.

Donors can schedule donations for the entire year. Every time a donor comes in to donate this leap year, they can help improve the lives

of patients and their families who rely on their generosity seven days a week, 366 days a year.

In addition to saving lives, the Red Cross matches PCHS donations with scholarship funds distributed to our students so each donation has double the positive impact in the Polo community and beyond.

If you can’t make the Feb. 25 date, mark your calendar for the next PCHS sponsored blood drive on April 30.

Forreston native authors book about Don Fager ‘He taught me a dozen or 15 different lessons’

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com After having a family member proofread his book, Norb Dunkel realized he had changed.

Part of his book was written technically. It contained detailed information about his family and how it came to be. The other part was emotional, recalling conversations with Don Fager, his mentor and the ultimate subject of the book.

This was because Dunkel was diagnosed with leukemia mid-way through writing it. He put the book down for a year. When he picked it back up, he had a feeling of urgency to get it done.

He cut out a lot of the technical stuff.

His wife noticed him changing, but he didn’t.

“She said, ‘You’re softer. You’re not as hard in your conversations. You’re not as critical. You’re more supportive. You recognize people more than you did before,’” Dunkel said. “I hadn’t even realized I was doing it, but I obviously had been.”

Jan. 30 was the four-year anniversary of Dunkel’s transplant. He is now 100 percent healthy.

And he’s released his book.

“Don’s Strength,” self published by Dunkel, details Norb’s time spent as a child in Forreston with Don Fager. Fager had multiple sclerosis and could not move from the neck down, but answered Forreston’s 911 calls.

Dunkel met Fager after delivering his paper as part of his route. The 11-year-old soon started to spend two hours each Saturday with Fager while his wife, Evelyn, left to go to the store and laundromat.

Forreston doesn’t have an abundance of emergency calls, but about 10 times Dunkel held the phone to Don’s ear while Don made arrangements and told Norb who to call. When Dunkel heard the special phone ring he’d start to get nervous and his blood would rush. But he noticed Don was different.

“Because he was very, very calm,” Dunkel said.

“I learned how to remain in control and be calm.”

That wasn’t the only lesson Dunkel learned from Fager. There is a small chapter in “Don’s Strength” dedicated to each lesson he learned from Fager.

“We were pleased to have Chris Martin and another Oregon alumni, Dick Fiebel of Rockford come meet the group and share their Nash automobile stories and some

other tales of Oregon’s car history,” said Michal Burnett. “They talked about Oregon’s own Etnyre Car Manufacturing Company which produced 3 Horseless Carriages and nine or 10 four-passenger and seven-passenger touring cars from 1906-1912.”

Burnett led a tour of the Nash home and members Kris Gilbert and

Marlene Hobbs also helped with this group.

The Ogle County Historical Society is open every Thursday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and every Wednesday from 1-6 p.m.

Starting in May, it will be open every Saturday from 1-4 p.m.

The Search for the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee: How a Team of Researchers Scientifically Established a Species’ Decline is the lecture topic on Sunday, Feb. 23 is the topic at the Byron Forest Preserve District’s 2020 Winter Lecture Series.

The program will start at 2 p.m. at the Jarrett Prairie Center Museum, 7993 North River Road, Byron.

Isaac Stewart, instructor of biology at Black Hawk College, will discuss how the work of a dedicated group of researchers put the rusty patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis) on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Endangered Species List in January 2017.

This was the first bee species from the continental United States that had ever been added to the list.

He will explore how it was shown that the rusty patched bumble bee abundance has declined 96% in the last 20 years and the implications for pollinator diversity in the future.

Domestic honey bees have dominated the news regarding the pollinator crisis, but native bees remain vital to Illinois’ ecosystems and agriculture.

As pollinators, rusty patched bumble bees contribute to our food security and the healthy functioning of our ecosystems.

Bumble bees are keystone species in most ecosystems that are necessary not only for native wildflowers reproduction, but also for creating seeds and fruit that feed wildlife. They are often better agricultural pollinators for certain crops than domestic honey bees.

This lecture is free and no advance registration is required to attend.

answer questions. New seed will also be available. Local gardeners will meet, share gardening tips, and have the opportunity to diversify their seed supply,” Green said.

“We improved by almost 300 pins from last week,” Oregon coach Eric Carlson said. “The girls were spot-on. They really have come together over the last 3 weeks and improved every week. We shot 5,899 to set the school record at regionals. We shot a 6,182 to really shoot a school record today.”

Oregon’s Rebbeca Meyers was second overall with a six-game series of 1,353 that included games of 226, 194, 202, 268, 207 and 256. She finished 39 pins behind Sycamore’s Megan Kolberg.

We need to value and nurture the gift of reading Last month’s columns addressed some of the ways our children and grandchildren might differ in relation to reading interests, places to read, and in motivation.

In January this column will explore various reading difficulties and possible ways to support struggling readers.

For this month, we will look at a basic need for all ages and all readers.

Access to books, or reading materials, is a basic need if we are going to develop lifelong readers who enjoy reading.

What if we consider access to books when we buy gifts for our children and grandchildren during the holidays and for birthdays?

First, we might want to expand our definition of “books”. Let’s think in broader terms of access to reading materials. That includes many options for even the most reluctant readers.

Consider magazines, almanacs, catalogs, or blogs and websites. We can also consider the possibilities of e-readers and electronic books.

Within that list there are several potential ideas for gift giving.

There are books about popular video games

like Minecraft that will appeal to those who enjoy playing those games. There is built-in motivation to read these books because they give tips and insights into playing the games.

Children’s cookbooks are also plentiful. These also have built-in motivation for reading.

They can also help build a bond as we read in order to bake or cook something together with our children and grandchildren.

The librarians at your local public library would be happy to suggest books based on your child’s interests. They can also tell you the most popular books for your children’s ages.

Many times, classroom teachers can offer suggestions as well.

Speaking of libraries, if you don’t already have

a library card, you might want to stop in your local library to see about getting one. That can be a gift for the whole family.

We do want our children and grandchildren to have access to all kinds of reading materials. We also want to encourage them to read. Positive attitudes and motivation for reading are also basic needs if we want them to be lifelong readers who can and do read.

We can show that reading is important by including reading in our gift giving. If we search for materials that match their interests, we increase the chance that they will want to read.

We can spend time reading to and with them as well which will also increase motivation.

Reading is a necessary skill in the world in which we live. Information comes at us continually from all sources. Some of it is in print that we must be able to read and understand.

Being able to read can and will make a difference for our children and grandchildren in their lives both in and out of school now and in the future.

We should do anything we can do to help them value the gift of reading.

McKenna is headed to state wrestling finals

BY ANDY COLBERT acolbert@oglecountynews.com For the first time since Ethan Cain in 2016, the Polo co-op will have a wrestling state qualifier. Marcus McKenna earned fourth place at the Oregon 1A sectional on Feb. 15.

McKenna, a 36-6 senior from Milledgeville, advanced to the 160pound semifinals before losing 10-0 to eventual champion Bryce Faworski of Winnebago (35-1).

Coming through the wrestlebacks, McKenna assured his berth at Assembly Hall with a pin over Jackson Murphy of Sandwich in the so-called “blood round”.

That set him up for the third-place match against Michael D’Orazio of Wheaton St. Francis, with both wrestlers moving on to state.

“It’s hard to comprehend I’m going to state,” McKenna said.

The journey started Friday with a first-period pin over Ty Connelly of Mendota. In the quarterfinals, Colton Reiman (34-10) of Riverdale presented a much tougher task.

Reiman scored a takedown with a duckunder with five seconds left in the first period. In the second period, Reiman rode McKenna out for most of the time, before McKenna escaped with five seconds left to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the third period, McKenna was able to put his opponent down and take a 4-2 lead before the pin.

“He was getting tired,” McKenna said. “He was a strong wrestler and tried to go around front and throw me. I countered it for the pin.”

“The Riverdale kid had a good lateral drop. I think we out-gassed him at the end,” Polo coach Jesse Culbertson said.

“I hooked both elbows and then in a scramble, caught him on his back for a pin,” McKenna said.

With no pressure on him, McKenna gave D’Orazio (25-3) a solid match before losing.

“It was nice to see all the hard work pay off for Marcus,” Culbertson said.

Lena-Winslow led everyone with eight state qualifiers, though one of

their favorites, Andrew Haas (40-8) failed to make it out of the same weight class (160) as McKenna.

Aiden Narden of Dakota, finished second to Faworski in a battle of the No. 2 and 3 ranked wrestlers in 1A at 160. Dakota had three sectional champs to lead everyone.

The Plano Regional had just one third place and two fourth place winners advance.

One of the qualifiers coming from Polo was Polo’s Marcus McKenna who took fourth place at 160 pounds.

McKenna’s coach Jesse Culbertson was extremely happy for his senior wrestler.

“Marcus only started wrestling as a freshman, and to qualify for the state

finals like this is really an achievement,” he said. “He is smart, and his great work ethic got him to this point.”

McKenna came into the tournament at the top of honorable mention list and heads to Champaign with a 36-6 record.

Culbertson said a lot of his success came from his conditioning and an unconventional style.

“He gets a little wild at times, particularly later in matches. He has had a lot

of come from behind wins, and never gives up,” Culbertson noted. “Some of the wildness is the result of not having twelve years of training like a lot of his competitors, but what he does he does well.”

A third place finisher at the regional, McKenna started in first round against Ty Connelly of Mendota, a third place finisher at the Plano Regional. He made

The 2020 IHSA Oregon Sectional is in the books and wrestlers advancing from the Polo Regional accounted for six of the 14 first places, six runners-up and 22 of the 56 medals in the tournament.

The Princeton Regional accounted for 17 place winners and had five champions and five seconds.

The Harvard Regional sent six to the first place mat and had three champs and 14 total qualifiers.

The Marcos had a size advantage inside, and they made the most of it.

“Our coach talked a lot about it, so that was a big thing for us,” Blake said. “If it wasn’t there, we’d just kick it out to the guards. It was all working tonight.”

Newman’s Bella Trancoso hit a 3 at the end of the first quarter to

get her team to within 11-7, and a basket from Macaire Brown, off a nifty feed from Josie Rank, gave the Comets (20-9) a short-lived 15-14 lead with 4:10 remaining in the second quarter.

Patterson responded with a short jumper and a 3-pointer in the next 2 minutes, and the Marcos were in charge the rest of the way. They led 24-20 at halftime, then scored the first seven points of the third quarter on buckets from Wagner and Blake, and a 3 from Boelens.

The tip went to Karlie Krogman, who brought the ball quickly up court and found Meredith Janssen cutting to the hoop for a layup. The made shot allowed the Cougars to set up their full-court press defense, and any chance for the Marcos to get comfortable disappeared.

Eastland jumped out to a quick double-digit lead and never looked back in a 75-33 win. The Cougars (29-3) advance to the Pecatonica Sectional, where they will play Stockton at 7 p.m. Monday. Stockton beat Aquin

37-35 to win the Lena-Winslow Regional on Friday.

“Polo was coming off playing a great game against Newman, so we wanted to start fast,” Eastland coach Nicole Brinker said. “We did that.

Really, we came out hitting most of our shots, and that let us set up our defense. That’s the key for us. The made shots turn into the press, and the press turns into more offense.”

Erin Henze followed the first score with a pair of 3-pointers sandwiched around a 3-pointer by teammate Lydia Coatney to give Eastland an 11-0 lead. For Henze, the early success was a relief.

“I haven’t been starting off games shooting very well,” Henze said. “I guess I need a 3-point competition before every game, because I felt good

once the game started.

Polo coach Jeff Grobe called the first of three first-quarter timeouts after Eastland went up 11-0.

“I was just doing whatever I could to stop the momentum,” Grobe said.

“I thought I might run out of timeouts in the first quarter.

“That’s the kind of program we want to become. Year in and year out, they are in this position and have expectations of deep runs. I think anything we learned from playing them here tonight will be a positive going forward.”

The timeout helped briefly, as Becca Wagner hit a 3-pointer to get the Marcos (14-16) on the board, but that just spurred a 14-0 run by Eastland.

The Cougars outscored the Marcos 21-5 in the second quarter and went

into half leading 51-10.

Polo had its best quarter to open the second half, as it outscored Eastland 17-15 in the third. Marah Blake scored five of her team-high nine points in the period, and Lindee Poper added four points in the quarter off the bench.

Polo loses one senior from the roster, Addy Grobe, who was injured for the game. Junior Alex Dusing, another key contributor, also did not play because of injury.

“We been a three- or four-win team the last few seasons,” Grobe said. “To finish with 14 wins is a step forward, and a nice accomplishment. I told them tonight to just come out and try their hardest and see what happens.

Hopefully, we can take the next step next season.”

One team’s dream can be another team’s nightmare, and that was the case on Feb. 12 for the Polo and Newman girls basketball teams.

They split regular-season games, and the rubber match was in a semifinal at the Class 1A Eastland Regional. On paper, the Comets were the favorite. They were riding an eight-game winning streak, while the Marcos lost one of their top players, junior forward Alex Dusing, to a knee injury in Tuesday’s quarterfinal against Morrison.

Once the ball was tipped, however, it was all Polo. The Marcos dominated from the beginning and rolled to a 68-45 victory that left most of those in attendance stunned one way or another.

“I had a dream [Tuesday] night it was going to come down to one shot and we had the ball,” Polo coach Jeff Grobe said. “Then I woke up.

Really, I thought it would be within five points. We couldn’t turn the ball over, and we needed to shoot lights out. … Everyone knows their roles.

Everyone did an awesome job. I’m ecstatic, and I hope the girls are, because they worked their butts off for this.”

Leading the way for Polo (14-15) was junior guard Mallory Patterson, who drained 7 of 11 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 23 points.

“We practiced in homeroom and I was off,” Patterson said of an earlier Wednesday shooting session, “and then I came here and I was on. It’s a day-by-day thing.”

The Marcos’ biggest lead was 28 points (63-35) after a free throw from Clark with 5:31 to go. The Comets’ Brown then produced a three-point play to help prevent a running clock the rest of the way.

Newman was an ice-cold 17-for-76 from field, including 4-for-25 from 3-point range. Alejandra Padilla paced the Comets with 13 points and 11 rebounds, while Rank added 11 points and eight boards.

Head coach Joe Salvatori noted his club was unable to get its transition game in gear, mainly because the Marcos were making so many shots.

Polo was 26-for-66 overall, including 12-for-25 from long distance.

“They scored, so it’s hard to get the ball out on a fast break,” Salvatori said. “They were bigger than us, and tonight, they were tougher than us. I give credit to Polo. They wanted the ball more and fought well.

And they hit 12 3s – you can’t guard all of them.”

Now the Marcos face the tall task of tangling with Eastland on the Cougars’ turf Friday night, with a regional championship on the line.

Eastland won both regular-season meetings between the teams.

“Their defensive pressure is unreal,” Grobe said. “We have one night to work on that, and we’ll see what we do. That’s why they play the games.”

“We haven’t done very well against them so far, but we played very well tonight,” Blake added.

“Hopefully we can carry that over to Friday.”

It was time for more wildness, and McKenna got it but it came too late. He escaped and just missed on an outside single with fifteen seconds left. He did get a takedown with a couple of seconds left, but it was not enough, and he lost 7-5.

“I really thought I had a chance if I hit that takedown, but I came up short,” he said. “I am happy with where I am and looking forward to the finals. I worked hard for this.”

Pronounced difference in wrestling sectionals W

hat a day of wrestling at the Oregon 1A sectional. It never fails to disappoint even the casual fan.

I had the chance to cover both 1A and 2A and there is a pronounced difference in crowd size and atmosphere.

Rochelle hosted what could be the toughest 2A meet in the state, similar to Oregon hosting the best 1A competition.

After being at Oregon Friday night and for most of Saturday morning, it felt like walking into a morgue at Rochelle on Saturday.

Don’t get me wrong. There was a nice crowd of several hundred people at Rochelle, but the intensity level wasn’t there like is for the 1,000-plus jam-packed into the Blackhawk Center.

The best performance at Oregon came from Lena-Winslow, who qualified a staggering eight wrestlers for state. This from a team that isn’t even eligible to compete for a state dual title, because they lost to Dakota at the regional. Something is wrong with that equation.

I’d put the fan base of Dakota and Le-Win alone against everybody at Rochelle. They are hardcore.

One fan that did not make it in time for Saturday morning’s round was a former star wrestler for Le-Win. Rahveon Valentine, who is a student at NIU, programmed Oregon into his GPS as he left DeKalb.

Upon arriving in Oregon, Valentine finally realized he was no longer in Illinois. He ended up in Oregon, Wisconsin, located just south of Madison.

Hopefully, he eventually made it back to the right Oregon to cheer on his alma mater. In covering Le-Win sports, I remember Rahveon always as a genuinely nice kid.

That why I think she will be the most important piece of Polo’s continuing success.

Marah Blake, Becca Wagner and Lindee Poper are effective near the post and Alex Dusing can go anywhere. With so much emphasis on 3-point shooting, someone like Patterson is a very valuable commodity.

Girls Basketball Even with a loss to state power Eastland, the Polo girls basketball team ended their season on a high note with a signature win over Newman.

That’s what the Marcos were looking for, as they demonstrated their legitimacy.

They showed glimpses of that in a close loss to Riverdale, a ranked 2A team. With nearly everyone returning for their senior year, with a nice mix of size and athleticism, 2020-21 promises to be special for Polo.

These girls will have been playing varsity since their freshman year and will be as seasoned as any team around. The only problem is how good 1A basketball is in northwest Illinois.

Can Polo contend with the big dogs next year?

It will be quite interesting seeing how the season unfolds.

Of course, it helps when Mallory Patterson makes 7-of-11, 3-point shots. Both teams attempted 25 shots form beyond the arc, with Polo making 12 and Newman 4.

That’s how games are won and lost. With Patterson on the court, teams have to adjust their defenses, freeing up the bigger girls in the post.

Oregon got kind of bad break in IHSA pairings.

No. 6 seed Hall Township was sent up to Winnebago instead of Chillicothe, giving that regional seven teams instead of six.

That forces No. 8 Oregon to play No. 9 Stillman Valley, with the winner meeting Winnebago. Had Hall been sent to Chillicothe, the Hawks would have had No. 13 seed Mendota, with the winner getting El-Paso instead of Winnebago.

Princeton and Bureau Valley (both close to Hall) were sent to Chillicothe, so why not Hall?

Strangely, Oregon faces Stillman Friday in the regular-season finale, before meeting again on Monday. It promises to be close.

The positive in all this is that Winnebago is not as strong as they have been in the past. Both Stillman and Oregon are capable of beating them, if everything goes right.

For fans headed to watch Polo at home Monday in their regional, don’t be surprised when you walk in and see a huge mismatch between No. 2 seed Dakota and No. 16 Leland in the first game.

Leland, who is 0-24, is losing games by 95-11, 79-13 and 61-8.

The only potentially bigger blowout would be at the Christian Life regional, where 28-0 powerhouse Indian Creek plays Our Lady of Sacred Heart of Rockford, the No. 15 seed.

Open houses offered on gypsy moth treatments Planned spraying treatments over area will be explained The Illinois Department of Agriculture will hold nine open houses to explain the proposed gypsy moth treatment plans for northern Illinois.

The gypsy moth is a non-native pest that feasts on more than 250 species of trees and shrubs, but its preferred food source is oak leaves.

Large populations are capable of stripping plants bare, leaving them vulnerable to secondary insect and disease attacks.

Severe defoliation can also cause tree death.

Infested sites will be treated with applications of either BtK (Bacillus thuringiensis var. Kurstaki), a naturally-occurring bacteria used by gardeners as an environmentally-friendly alternative to chemical pesticides, or mating disruption (MD), a gypsy moth-specific pher-

“We were the youngest ones there with a bunch of adults who have been to many of these events,” she said. “To have that experience at such a young age puts a point of view on life. Next time, when we’re 20 or so, we’ll know how it’s going to go.”

The group’s 13 students are divided into groups and work as planners, community liaisons who contact local businesses and ask to make appearances, public speakers and writers, along with floaters who do a little of everything. Their work gets formulated into a persuasion plan for presenters to inform people with during outreach.

Doing this is a chance for the students to see that they are making real change, Sitze said.

“They have the ability to speak to groups that others don’t,” he said.

“These students will be able to hit high school students, middle school students, elementary school students with activities and language that is recognizable. If we convince

the students that this is important, they can convince the parents, and then we have a better chance.”

The students are enjoying their work: Oregon High is unique in that students need 80 community service hours in order to graduate.

Special graduation honors are awarded to those who eclipse 400 hours.

“It’s fun to have the freedom, and to get to decide what the project is and help the community,” Taylar Rufer said.

Paige Beauchem has learned a lot about time management with her participation in it.

“We do a lot of work on our own, so we get to teach ourselves,” she said. “It puts a lot of responsibility on you.”

The first official call to residents begins March 12 with the first of four letters sent to residences providing information about it. Paper forms come with the final letters, and census takers will go door-to-

door to places that have not had residents complete any type of form.

Forms also can be done online or by phone; more information about those methods are addressed in the initial letter.

Money is a big reason why census forms should be completed, Nadia Thiesen said.

“It gets used for a lot of things,” she said.

“School programs, childc a r e programs, health programs, pretty much anything to do with the community. Park buildings, and things like that. We don’t get the right amount if we don’t count all of the people.”

“This happens once every 10 years, so if anyone is missed we lose funding for them for the next 10 years,” Abby Duke added. “Even with one person, that is a lot of money.”

People have a price when it comes to government spending, and it’s about $1,800 per person.

For every person Riley Crichton and Avery Sellers talked to at Pinecrest Grove Community Center’s McKendrie Cafe, it may lead to more federal funding.

Numbers matter, and Riley and Avery are Oregon High School sophomores who are part of a Complete Count Committee that wants to make sure every person is accounted for in the 2020 United States Census.

“People don’t actually realize how much money is involved,” Riley said.

The Census, done every 10 years, assures that programs based on population distribution get as much money as possible. Complete Count Committees educate residents on the importance of the Census, and the high school group is coordinating with similar ones from the City of Oregon and the Ogle County Board to plan events, target hard to reach populations and spread awareness.

The undercount of Illinois residents in the 2010 Census had a great financial effect: Nearly $122 million could have gone to the state for every 1% of the population not counted, according to a report from the George Washington Institute for Public Policy.

Nearly 16% of Illinois residents live in “hard-to-count” areas that require greater resources for census organizers to account for, census records show. Most remain undercounted, and it adds up to over $1 billion in possible revenue for the state.

Riley uses that as a point of emphasis to persuade people to assure they are counted.

“People are usually polite enough to listen,” she said. “If we say the right things, it’ll catch their attention.”

The committee is part of the high school’s open program class for sophomores, coordinated by teachers Aaron Sitze, Cole Davidson and Kim Radostits. It started after a call for community service projects for students to undertake was answered

by Northern Illinois University’s Center for Governmental Studies.

Enough students were interested to form a group, and they attended seminars and workshops at NIU in DeKalb and Malcolm X College in Chicago to be trained in the census process.

State Police director backs FOID fingerprinting Outlines increased enforcement efforts, needed for resources

BY JERRY NOWICKI Capitol News Illinois SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois State Police director said last week that his department has stepped up illegal firearm ownership enforcement methods, but it needs greater resources to continue the job — including fingerprints of Firearm Owner Identification Card applicants.

During a news conference Thursday, ISP Director Brendan Kelly gave an update about enforcement efforts and announced support for Senate Bill 1966, a measure that would increase FOID card fees and mandate fingerprinting of applicants.

The House passed the bill in May, but a Senate measure to agree with that final language stalled before a vote. It remains in the Senate assignments committee but could be taken up this legislative session.

Under the bill, sponsored in the House by Rep. Kathleen Willis, D-Addison, new applications for FOID cards and renewals — which would be required every five years — would cost $20, up from the current cost of $10. The fees would fund law enforcement revocation efforts for those not legally allowed to own FOID cards or guns.

Gun advocacy groups such as the Federal Firearms Licensees of Illinois and the Illinois State Rifle Association oppose the bill, and have argued fingerprinting and increased fees hinder Second Amendment rights.

While Kelly was questioned about the constitutionality of fingerprinting gun owners at the news conference, he said ISP’s main consideration is public safety — lawmakers and judges will decide constitutionality.

“We will be able to do a much more thorough, effective and quicker background check, even for law-abiding citizens, if we have that fingerprint,” he said.

Kelly’s briefing came one year after a shooting at an Aurora warehouse left five people dead and others injured. That shooter, Kelly said,

should not have had a gun because there was a 1995 felony aggravated battery conviction on his record.

The ISP director also said there are several instances similar to this one in which criminal background information is not included in key national databases. There are “over 7 million firearms ownership-prohibiting records in this country which are not readily available in background check databases,” he said.

The information does show up when a person is fingerprinted — and it did when the Aurora shooter was fingerprinted for a concealed carry permit in 2014 — but he had already purchased the gun used in the shooting by that time because he lied on his FOID card application, Kelly said.

At the time, police only sent a letter to the shooter demanding he turn in his guns, but took no other action.

“Because a form letter sent only at the time of revocation is not enough,

Kelly said before the Aurora shooting, ISP was “only incidentally” confiscating guns from those who were not legally allowed to own them as part of “other types of investigations.” There was no concerted, coordinated effort.

“Enforcement has improved,” he said, noting the ISP’s criminal investigation division conducted more than 200 revocations since May 2019 that resulted in retrieved guns.

Kelly said the fund supporting police background checks has “been affected by budget crisis after budget crisis,” but recent stability from the current administration has been beneficial, “allowing the ISP to build out multi-year hiring and service plans.”

While 90 percent of about 300,000 new FOID applications in the past year were processed within the mandated 30 days, Kelly said, it took police a total of 13,877 hours of overtime. Gun rights advocates have sued over alleged FOID and concealed carry permit delays, however.

“Even with the incredibly hard work of the men and women in justice services, and with the incredibly hard and sometimes dangerous work of the men and women serving in the division of criminal investigations, there is still much more to be done,” Kelly said in backing SB 1966.

OGLE COUNTY SHERIFF Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle reports the following activity Feb. 11 Mary Elmore, 37, of Rochelle was arrested for domestic battery. Elmore was held at the Ogle County Jail in lieu of bond.

Feb. 12 At 9:23 a.m., Ogle County sheriff’s deputies, the Polo Police Department, the Polo Fire Department and the Polo Ambulance responded to a one vehicle rollover accident on Cavanaugh Road at Illinois 26.

A grey Toyota Avalon driven by Einar S. Dahl, 90, of Prospect Heights was southbound on Cavanaugh Road when the vehicle left the right side of the road.

The Toyota then crossed back over the roadway striking an embankment causing it to roll over in the field.

Dahl was transported to KSB Hospital with minor injuries by the Polo Ambulance.

Larry Barnes, 30, of Oregon was arrested at 9:13 p.m. for driving while under the influence and unlawful possession of cannabis-improper container after responding to Illinois 64 and Mongan Drive for a one-vehicle crash. Barnes

also received citations for no insurance, improper lane use and no valid driver’s license.

Barnes was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was released on an I-bond and will appear in court on March 6 at 9 a.m.

Feb. 13 Michael O’Brien, 21, of Rockford was arrested at 9:43 p.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol after deputies, along with Byron Fire, responded to the 10000 block of Illinois 2 for a one vehicle crash.

O’Brien was also cited for improper lane use, driving on the shoulder, unlawful transportation of alcohol, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

O’Brien was transported to a Rockford hospital for minor injuries.

O’Brien is scheduled to appear in court on March 6.

Feb. 15 Tevin Gray, 24, of Rockford was arrested for driving while license revoked after a traffic stop for speeding on Interstate 39. Gray was held in lieu of bond at the jail.

Aaron Funches, 24, of Freeport was arrested for driving while license suspended after a traffic stop for speeding on Illinois 64 near Mulford Road. Funches was held in lieu of bond at the jail.

Feb. 15 At 1:45 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the parking lot at 800 S. 4th Street, TNT Motors, involving a 1997 Chevrolet driven by Johnna D. Rowland, 19, of Mt. Morris, and a parked 2007 Hyundai belonging to TNT Motors. No citations were issued.
