Polo teen in remission after chemo Marschang is ‘writing her own book’ in fight with ovarian cancer

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Kaitlyn Marschang has defied every medical textbook since her fight with cancer started in November 2018.

After a large tumor was found in her abdomen and later removed with surgery, Marschang, 17, was diagnosed with small cell ovarian cancer and less than a 10 percent chance to survive. She underwent a round of chemotherapy, the side effects of which nearly killed her. She is currently in remission. Her story just isn’t by the book.

“Because I’m writing my own book,” Marschang said.

Late at night on Jan. 12, 2019 Kaitlyn was transported to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison with abdominal pains. She was fighting a necrotizing myonecrosis. Her bowel had died inside of her due to her chemo treatments. She had a white blood cell count of .01. She gained 90 pounds due to fluid.

She had multiple organs fail.

Kaitlyn’s mother, Rebecca was told by medical officials to call family to the hospital. Kaitlyn underwent surgery on her large intestine. She almost died twice after that. She spent three months in the hospital.

“They’ve never seen anyone survive a necrotizing myonecrosis in 20 years,” Rebecca said. “Basically, her surgeon sat me down outside of her room in the [pediatric intensive care unit] and told me that. And said that she was defying all odds. That she shouldn’t be here.”

Rebecca and Kaitlyn’s father, Ray, stayed at the hospital for all three months, taking leaves from their jobs.

They stayed in an 8-foot by 8-foot sleep room near the PICU that Kaitlyn was in. Rebecca, who works as a nurse in Freeport, refused to leave the floor with fear that something would happen to Kaitlyn.

Kaitlyn’s sister, Allissa stayed at the hospital for six weeks with her family.

She did her seventh-grade homework there and still maintained straight-A’s.

She decorated Kaitlyn’s room with cards wishing her well. Ray stayed despite hating hospitals. On occasion he and additional family stayed at the Ronald McDonald House on site, which provides services for just donations. He called it a godsend.

Kaitlyn eventually got better. Despite the odds.

“Everybody knew her,” Ray said. “We had doctors stopping us in the hall and

Kaitlyn missed the rest of her junior year at Polo High School after Thanksgiving. She did some summer school before returning in the fall as a senior, starting off with half days. She was named homecoming queen, during which she still had a picc line, a permanent port for intravenous treatments.

Her and her mother camouflaged it under her dress.

Community Chips In Support from the community during Kaitlyn’s fight included banquets, bake sales, benefits, and the sale of ribbons, bracelets, and shirts. “Team Kate” was written on the signs at the Shell station, the bank, the grocery store and on the marquee downtown.

Casey’s made teal donuts. Police officers, the fire department and ambulances gave her an escort back into town after her hospital stay.

“This town is like something that would be in a Hallmark movie,” Ray said.

When someone first came to the house and dropped off a donation check, Kate’s parents were too proud to accept the help. But they came to understand the community’s need to help and soon appreciated the outpouring of support.

The family could not keep track of the numerous donations as well as the different kinds. The bank started keeping a ledger of people and addresses. There was money sent to a GoFundMe account as well.

“Once the checks started going out to the medical bills and the ambulance rides, it was a good thing,” Ray said.

“Because we probably would have lost our house very easily.”

The Marschangs are a Christian family. The events of the past year have strengthened their faith. Ray didn’t used to be outwardly faithful, now his daughters say he talks about it a lot more.

When things would get bad at the hospital with Kaitlyn, Rebecca would put out a prayer request on Facebook.

“And things would just turn around,” Rebecca said. “In sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes 20. Everything just got better. And no explanation other than it was God’s hand in all of it.”

Kaitlyn said she had trouble believing prior to her near-death experience. Until she saw something while she was unconscious. It was one of the first things she told her mom when she could speak again.

“I told mom that God came to me while I was unconscious and told me to fight it,” Kaitlyn said. “And I did.”

Planning for the Future Kaitlyn’s unique case and the aggressiveness of her cancer type makes her approach going forward cautious. She will be doing a tumor marker each month, a CT scan of her lungs and an MRI PET scan of her abdomen and pelvis every three months. That’s what’s recommended by a doctor that specializes in small cell ovarian cancer.

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Matt Wileman wasn’t good friends with Kent Dearborn Jr. He’d see him around town in Polo. Kent spent some time working on some of Wileman’s construction equipment. But Wileman is good friends with Dearborn Jr.’s brother, Mike. Still, last week Wileman took to Facebook and organized a volunteer search for Dearborn Jr., 33, of Polo, one of two Oregon fishermen that went missing near the Oregon dam on Nov. 20. The other, James Swift, 64, of Forreston was found on Jan. 3 near the Dixon dam. Wileman’s efforts got 800 shares in 24 hours and resulted in a three-day search. “I’d always see the fish he’d catch on Facebook,� Wileman said of Dearborn Jr. “I just felt like the search effort wasn’t enough. There’s no closure for the family. I lost a family member recently, so I understand how it feels. I spend a lot of time on the river.�

What resulted was a search that took place last week that spanned from Oregon to Sterling.

As many seven boats were out on the river at one time. At least two people were in each boat.

Those without boats walked the shorelines that were safe. “I think it was Wednesday it was 12 degrees,�

Wileman said. “I froze my butt off. We dressed as warm as we could. It was frostbite weather for sure.�

She was recently readmitted on Dec. 13, 2019 for a medication issue, but has since come back home and returned to school. Until her doctors are more sure about her cancer, Kaitlyn will have to stay close to the area. She anticipates she’ll attend Sauk Valley Community College to start out. She wants to be a teacher after college.

She’s currently helping at Centennial Grade School in Polo for course credit. The children in the school remember her story from when the town rallied around her. “I’ve been everywhere in that school and I’m like a famous person to them,� Kaitlyn said. “Yesterday, I autographed someone’s art project.�

Kaitlyn has seen changes in her personality since November 2018. She says she’s a lot more outgoing now. She wasn’t a “hugger� before, but she is now. She’s no longer shy. She used to hate going to the doctor’s office. Kaitlyn used to keep secrets from her mom.

Now the entire family knows all of her secrets.

She’s become closer with her dad. The two went deer hunting this fall, taking time from school and work in a way they wouldn’t have before. Kaitlyn and Allissa don’t argue over who is the favorite anymore. “In the past when they used to fight we’d get frustrated and upset,� Ray said. “Now, when we fight or Kaitlyn is doing something she’s not supposed to do, Rebecca and I are just like, ‘Well that’s kind of music to our ears.’ Because we can still hear it. And we still have her.�

Winter is back and all the balmy weather is gone

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society After an evening of “Trick or Treat” when we had not expected to add hot chocolate and winter coats, winter is back.

Winter came early when we had not wanted it and then when we thought a touch of white would be nice as we hung our Christmas stockings, it stayed away.

The balmy weather was nice and we knew it would not last especially when we have people who depend on winter snow for added income. I had the perfect window for watching the swirling snow when we lived up the street but I have not found a nice comfy spot here so far to watch winter.

We are however, right in the mid-

dle of lots of activity with the men in their trucks with blades on, snow plows on the highway, and people stopping by for coffee to warm up at Shell.

The other night as I stood by the front door window looking out at the snow, I saw a number of pickup trucks turning at the corner.

Within a matter of minutes two fire trucks with lights flashing were soon on their way north. I remembered all the times when Jim Cavanaugh would quickly be out at the intersection stopping traffic so help could arrive just a few minutes sooner.

We forget about all the people in our community who help out in some way or the other. Jim will be missed by many in Polo.

Coming up, Polo Historical Soci-

ety will be having their winter meeting on Feb. 5. I am not certain what the program will be but we will be meeting at the museum. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for those of us older people who hesitate getting out in icy, snowy, winter days.

I went over to the museum this past week and mailed out two more Civil War books to Lanark. People are still finding their relatives and they are thrilled to suddenly find information about them.

The men who left Northern Illinois to head south would be happy to know that over 150 years later family members are finally reading about them.

That is exactly what I had in mind when I started all the searching over 10 years ago.

I received a nice letter from Kevin

Tvedt in California recently. He had sent a generous donation along with a nice letter.

He is a descendant of Schuyler and Elizabeth Lunt. They were early settlers in Buffalo Grove and Canada Settlement. Schuyler Lunt was a part of the Underground Railroad in this area.

John Lunt, son of Schuyler and Elizabeth, was one of the first signers at the Presbyterian Church along with Jacob Paul.

I started the book off about those two young men being a part of the first signers. Kevin was very interested in the book and he wants to come to Polo to do a bit more research on his family.

I will look forward to seeing him this spring and helping him with more information on his family.

“I think it’s a great thing to do for the family,” VanVickle said. “But I have to tell them to be careful. Frostbite sets in quick. It’s dangerous out there. Safety has been a priority all along with the first responders when they’ve gone out. I hope it was the same in their search.”

VanVickle said a flyover with a plane was done last week from Oregon to Dixon. The Sheriff’s Office will be trying to do one per week.

Weather has been an issue with the cold temperatures, VanVickle said. And Oregon to Dixon is “just too much real estate to cover with a boat.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is aware that searching will be done in areas near Dixon and will handle the official duties if a recovery is made in their jurisdiction. Lee County will not be conducting any searches.

“Obviously with the amount of current, we knew that could be a possibility,” VanVickle said.

Wileman plans to continue the volunteer searches before the weather gets too cold. He and other searchers are making different maps and plan on searching closer to the Oregon dam. Wileman urges anyone who might be interested in helping search, especially those who own a boat, to contact him at his Facebook

Assisting in last week’s search was the Ottawa River Rescue Squad.

Wileman anticipates the donation-based group could come back if it has enough funding and volunteers.

“I had someone on Facebook reach out to me about Ottawa,” Wileman said. “I called everybody and asked

for help. They came out and it was great. They were able to get into shallow waters. But we didn’t have a point of interest.”

Some members of the volunteer search had sonar equipment with their boats, but Wileman said there were not many and it was hard to get a clear image.

The Rapid Response Search and Rescue Unit 19, a group based in Tampico that helped area officials earlier in the search, may be coming back to search if the group can find volunteers, Wileman said. The Tampico team has top-level sonar equipment.

Without much sonar, Wileman and his team were forced to focus their search on more shallow areas like near the Grand Detour area.

Those areas seemed promising to Wileman after the river receded.

“I wanted to know he wasn’t visible and sitting there,” Wileman said.

“I wanted to let the family know that we did what we could.”

A benefit dart tournament for the families of Dearborn and Swift will be held on Saturday, March 7 at the Polo Room at 712 N. Division Ave. in Polo. The buy-in to the tournament is $15. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction with the proceeds going to the families.

Donations will be accepted as well.

10-year-old continues to battle two diseases

“It gets tiring,” Stephanie Freeze said. “It’s financially hard. It’s emotionally hard. It makes it easier with her just because she has a very optimistic attitude. She’s very brave, very strong. She faces each surgery with a smile.”

When out of town for surgery, Colton stays with his father, Matt, and Stephanie’s mother. Those two have been instrumental in supporting the family emotionally and financially. Matt owns Blake Automotive in Mt. Morris and works as much as he can to cover medical costs.

The community has stepped up as well to help out the Freeze family.

There have been multiple fundraisers in the area over the years, including one at Blackhawk Nutrition last week. Others from the area have donated to the family’s GoFundMe to help with medical costs.

Before her fifth surgery, a card drive was held that asked members of the community to send well wishes to Emmalyn. She got over 750 cards including one from every state except Alaska and even one from Japan.

When 10-year-old Emmalyn Freeze has friends over, she’ll ask them if they want to sit and watch a movie after playing for a couple of hours.

Freeze, of Mt. Morris, has an active cerebrospinal fluid leak in her spine. It gives her headaches when she’s upright and moving.

Lying down helps with the pain.

“I try to give myself a little relief,” Freeze said. “I don’t want them to have to go home.”

Freeze and her brother, Colton, were diagnosed with Chiari Malformation and Syringomyelia at a young age. Chiari Malformation is a condition where part of the brain slides down into the spinal canal and blocks the cerebrospinal fluid from flowing as it needs to cleanse and nourish the spinal cord.

Syringomyelia is a cerebrospinal fluid filled cyst inside the spinal cord that form a blockage of fluid.

They both had a decompression surgery to lift the brain and restore flow to the spinal canal. Colton was five and Emmalyn was three.

Colton is now 12, and his surgery appears to have been successful. Emmalyn wasn’t quite as lucky.

Emmalyn has an underlying connective tissue problem and other underlying conditions that weren’t addressed prior to being decompressed.

Due to the unaddressed conditions, Emmalyn’s initial surgeon removed too much bone from her skull, the decompression failed and it has caused a snowball effect that has caused her a life of continued pain and 33 surgeries. Her upcoming 34th will be an attempt to stop her CSF leak with glue.

“If it doesn’t work or hold, they’ll probably have to surgically open up her back which we’re trying to avoid at all costs,” Stephanie Freeze, Emmalyn’s mother said. We don’t want to put her through more surgeries than she’s already been through.”

In 2019, Emmalyn and Stephanie were out of town due to medical issues for all but 124 days. They were in New York for three months straight. After changing doctors, Emmalyn had to begin flying out to California for eight days every month since July for attempts to stop her CSF leak.

Fatigue, leg pain, and memory issues have been other side effects of Emmalyn’s medical issues. One of her tougher times came years ago when her spine had to be fused from zero to C4 because she has cranial-cervical instability due to too much bone being taken in her first surgery.

That included a donor bone, screws and rods in her head and a brace. It caused an infection she fought for six months. The bone finally fused and hardware was removed from her head.

Frustration has built for Stephanie and their family, after so many times hoping that the next surgery will be the last. Stopping the CSF leak and helping Emmalyn lead a more normal life is the goal.

By Karen Merlak After a weekend of rough weather, we are grateful for those braving the elements to restore power to Pine Creek and surrounding areas.

In all things, we call on our Father for help, for comfort, and for celebration. Our God is an awesome god.

Our church services were canceled this morning due to a power outage. Some of our Pine Creek family found warm shelter at their neighbor’s homes until the power was restored. We will be back next Sunday with our regular worship services.

The All Pro Dad’s program occurs once a month and includes breakfast, bonding, and a short program on relevant life topics.

“One of the best parts of the program includes the ‘Pride Moment’ whereby fathers tell their children what they are most proud of them for over the past month,” said Nate Rogers, organizer.

“This simple, yet effective program is taking place all around the country and

heard, ‘This will be it. This is the one. You’re going to see a new Emmalyn after this,’” Stephanie said. “And then something else fails.”

Emmalyn attends Faith Christian Elementary School in Grand Detour. She enjoys science, arts and crafts and baking. Her dream job is to be a Child Life Specialist, which is a program that works to help children in hospitals cope with the challenges of hospitalization, illness, and disability.

Due to her current condition, Emmalyn can’t play contact sports. But she enjoys watching softball and volleyball and hopes to maybe compete one day. Her favorite sport, luckily doesn’t have much contact.

“I want to run a marathon someday,” Emmalyn said. “I really like running. But most of the time I can’t do it.”

At Emmalyn’s school during recess time, kids often play soccer. With her CSF leak, she’s forced to instead walk around the gym and watch. She hopes that will change with surgery number 34.

“If it does work, I can do things as long as I want,” Emmalyn said. “I don’t have to stop.”

With over twenty in attendance, we shared a lovely evening of PEO matters and lots of fellowship.

This past week, I joined the rehearsals for “Matilda the Musical,” which will be performed by students from Polo High School and Aplington Middle School. The large cast is under the direction of Jamie Apperson, with assistance from Beth Wiegmann.

The musical will be performed in March. Ticket information, dates, and times, will be available in the high school office. The cast, including my nephew, Garrett Bittinger, is off to a great start for this huge production.

This will be a very busy week as I start back to school for my fourth semester. I will complete my classes this year. Next year, I will move on to my student teaching. With each week and each class, my excitement grows.

Now that the holidays are over, my children and I have settled into our regular routine of texting to keep in touch. I am glad to say they are all safe and sound in their places of residence.

We are anxiously awaiting news from Stephanie and Joao on their next move. Joao will be starting a new job, however, the location is still unknown. The good news for Stephanie is that it will be someplace much warmer.

This past week was one filled with excitement for our family. I was offered a new position at my fulltime job which will allow me to leave my part-time job at the grocery store. I have enjoyed working at the store and visiting with the customers.

While it will be sad to leave that

part of the job, I am extremely grateful to have the weekends off work once again. Several weeks ago, I wrote about the expression, “if you’re going to pray for rain, you’d better bring an umbrella.”

Over the past month, I have been the recipient of countless blessings, more than I could have anticipated.

There are times when I wonder if I really deserve His care and love to this degree. Then, I am reminded that there’s nothing I can do to earn His love. It’s just given.

So many times we think we need to complete tasks to receive love from others or from God. Love is a gift. Just as God has given it freely to all of us, we can give it to each other, in the same manner. He is our example and guide.

My hope continues to be that our churches will be filled with people longing to get to know our loving Father. I hope you will join us at our church in the country. We will gather again next Sunday for a time of praise for watching over us in the storm. Let us worship Him together.

Get your mask, come to annual Masquerade Ball The Polo Area Community Theater will hold its 6th Annual Masquerade Ball on Saturday, Jan. 18.

The ball is open to persons aged high school and older. Evening wear with a mask is required for admittance to the ball.

The event, held at 117 N Franklin Ave, in Polo, will include: Hors D’oeuvre from 7:15-9 p.m. including a chocolate fountain and non-alcoholic drinks available all night; dancing with a fun playlist under an awesome Mirror ball; and a raffle auction, with drawings at 10 p.m.

Art group auction features painting by Lippert A watercolor painting by Marjorie Lippert will be offered for silent auction at the upcoming Eagle’s Nest Art Group show at the Byron Museum of History, Feb. 8 through March 27.

The show will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays with the opening reception on Saturday, Feb. 8 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Marjorie Lippert helped to start the Eagle’s Nest Art Group in 1957 along with Harry Nurmet, Mary Ellen Lytle, and Rose Fleming.

She is known for her watercolors of Oregon and other northern Illinois landscapes. Her paintings are a part of several local collections, including the Oregon Depot and the Ogle County Historical Society.

The painting offered for auction is untitled, but appears to be of the Unimin Silica Sand Corporation, located in Oregon on Devil’s Back Bone Road, west of the of Oregon.

The painting was the property of the late David Martin and was donated to Eagle’s Nest Art Group for auction by his daughter Jody Ryder.

The painting has been newly reframed and double matted, compliments of local artist and ENAG member, Craig Carpenter.

Proceeds from the sale of the painting will go to support the work of Hands On Oregon (HOO), a nonfor-profit dedicated to improving Oregon.

Bids will start at $100. The silent

auction will end at the close of the show on March 27 at 3 p.m. The purchaser will be notified.

Before the NUIC south division game against Forreston on Jan. 11, coach Matt Messer of Polo expressed concern over slow finishes for his Marcos.

That concern proved to be warranted, with Forreston advancing a 24-21 halftime lead to a 58-44 final.

“We’re not consistent on offense and don’t have the same energy in the second half,” Messer said.

With Tucker Mumford getting on the scoreboard early for the Marcos, it was an a 8-3 Polo lead. The rest of way he was held in check by a stingy Cardinal defense, as Forreston went on an 11-0 run, with Riley Cornelius, Ethan Greenfield, Jakob Boomgarden and Kolten Dorty all contributing.

“I was happy with our effort,” Forreston coach Justin Shiltz said. “Obviously, with Senior Night and Polo, there was more emotion.”

Part of the problem for Polo was finishing underneath the basket. They had chances to score more points in the first quarter, as they beat Forreston to the boards early on and had a 29-24 rebounding advantage.

Jace Coffey stopped the run with a basket to close out the quarter with Polo behind 14-10.

Chase Greenfield put the pressure back on Polo with a pair of 3-pointers to start the second quarter to make it 20-12.

Junior Gavin Zell came off the bench to spark Polo with a pair of second-quarter 3-pointers of his own, half of the four for the game he had.

Forreston, which hit 8-of-20 treys, got a 3-pointer from Dorty to make it 24-21 at half.

“At halftime, we talked about what we needed to do,” Shiltz said. “I don’t think we were playing as good as we should have.”

That is where the game began to fall apart for

a basket off a foul, but Mumford was soon called for his fourth foul.

“He’s a kid you got to watch for and focus on,” said Shiltz of Mumford. “He was at the top of our scouting report.”

Brody Glawe gave a bit of hope with a 3 to pull Polo within single digits. Then Boomgarden upped the lead to 38-27 and Cornelius stole the ball from a Marco after a missed shot and put it back in as the two teams went into the fourth quarter at 40-27.

“Riley played very solid defensively on the wing. He also helped Ethan with ball handling,” Shiltz said.

Baskets by Greenfield, Cornelius and Derek DeVries upped the lead to 46-27. On Devries’s basket, the smallest player on the court in Zell was called for a blocking foul on him.

Zell did cut the lead to 14 on the next trip down and Coffey added another basket, but Boomgarden had a 3-point dagger with 4:30 left.

That made it 51-34 and all that remained was for the large crowd on Senior Night at Forreston to enjoy the final minutes.

Ethan Greenfield and Dorty each had 13 points.

In a balanced attack, it was Cornelius with eight, Boomgarden seven, Chase Greenfield six and DeVries four.

Zell was the only Marco in double figures with 12 points, followed by nine from Coffey, six from Glawe and five from Bennett Soltow.

“We’ve had a good run for a few years. You can’t expect that all the time,” Messer said. “But, we should be able play with anyone in our division. What’s been tough is a brutal non-conference schedule.”

Polo shot 15-for-40 from the field and was 6-for11 from the free throw line. They had 15 turnovers.

The Cardinals were 20-39 shooting, but only 11-20 from the charity stripe.

Personal friendships still abound in rural areas A big thank you to everyone that has expressed thoughts, prayers, and condolences on the passing away of my wife Kathy.

As I’ve shared many times in this column, living in a small rural area affords a greater degree of personal friendship.

Of the innumerable hugs received, the one that meant the most came from Oregon girls basketball coach Wendy Lambrigtsen.

Last Tuesday, following the Lutheran-Oregon game and only three days removed from Kathy’s death, Wendy embraced me and told me how much she cared.

As a cancer patient herself, she intimately knows what it feels like. She held me like a crying baby near the gym floor, taking away some of my emotional pain.

The girls team has a tough slate of games upcoming with BNC heavyweights Dixon, Rock Falls, Winnebago, and Mendota in consecutive order. As the season has progressed, Olivia Lambrigsten and Jenae Bothe have proven to be a potent 1-2 punch on the inside and outside.

In the midst of a Lutheran, Winnebago and Rochelle stretch, the Hawk boys are also in the meat of their schedule. Oddly enough, their toughest game this year might have been against 1A Indian Creek, who whipped Oregon 73-57 on Jan. 4.

According to coach Quinn Virgil, the stateranked Timberwolves were as good as advertised.

They came in with two wins over Aurora Christian, who beat BNC favorite Lutheran.

You just don’t think of an Indian Creek being better than BNC teams like ‘Bago, Rock Falls or Lutheran. But, 2A basketball is as weak as its been in quite some time.

Interestingly, the top six ranked teams in 2A include four from the Chicago Public League and

two from the deep south.

Getting back to 1A, Indian Creek feeds into the sectional with all the NUIC schools. Unlike last year, where there were a number of quality NUIC teams, there doesn’t appear anyone capable of challenging Indian Creek.

Le-Win, Dakota, Aquin, Pecatonica and East Dubuque all have had decent years, but nothing like Indian Creek. But, anything is possible in a 32-minute basketball game played by high-school kids.

I had a chance to get to Forreston on Jan. 10 for some of the Polo-Forreston basketball game, which had a large crowd for what was purported to be nasty weather.

Some games were even cancelled that evening.

I realize meteorological science is the best it has ever been, but please, please, please – stop embellishing the severity of a weather event.

The Armageddon of a storm never materialized and it was great to see a packed house of hearty souls not afraid of winter weather.

It was nice sportsmanship for Forreston to introduce the Polo senior basketball players, before starting their formal Senior Night. As a reporter, I’ve always enjoyed Senior Nights, as I get my curiosity satisfied by seeing who the parents of players are.

Another reason for going to Forreston was to cover Don Cook being honored by the school for

his 50 years of service as an IHSA official. With the difficulty in finding and retaining officials, what Don has done is a testament to one man’s service to high school sports.

There have been plenty enough platitudes tossed about regarding Don’s longevity, so allow me to share another story.

Last year, Don and I were talking about all the abuse officials take from fans and the detrimental effect it has. Well, a few weeks later, I found myself sitting within earshot of him at a Forreston girls basketball game.

All of sudden, I hear an unflattering remark from him directed at one of the officials. Something to the effect – ‘Hey ____ you’re better than that’.

I don’t think it was meant to be vindictive like much of the acerbic garbage fans spew out, but it just goes to show – the emotion of a basketball game can get the best of anyone.

January 10 was the deadline for submitting bids to the IHSA for hosting the boys and girls basketball tournaments from 2021 to 2023.

After 77 years at the University of Illinois, the IHSA made a bold move in 1996 and accepted Bradley’s bid to be host. That was where the boys have been since then.

It will be interesting to see which cities are putting a bid in for one of the IHSA crown jewels, though the glow is certainly not what it used to be.

The girls have been at Illinois State since 1992 and like Peoria for the boys, Normal has done a nice job for the girls.

Speaking of state tournaments, the 6A football title game in Texas had an attendance of 47,818 at the Dallas Cowboys stadium. That is more fans than 70 percent of the college bowl games.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Jan. 7 At 4:35 p.m., police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 1100 block of Jefferson Street involving a 2013 Kia driven by Jessica V. Geske, 16, of Oregon, and a parked 2007 Nissan belonging to Jennifer A. Kenney, 46, of Oregon. No citations were issued.

Jan. 8 Drew M. Harper, 16, of Byron, was issued a citation at 7:55 p.m. for speeding, 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. This violation occurred near the intersection of N. 4th and Fair Streets.

Jan. 10 At 3:55 p.m., police responded to a two-vehicle traffic crash in the Super Valu parking lot located at 204 N. 4th

Street involving a 2001 Chrysler driven by a 12-year-old juvenile of Mt. Morris, and a parked 2015 Nissan belonging to James P. Wooden, 36, of Dixon.

The owner of the Chrysler, Michelle R. Smitherman was issued citations for driving while suspended and operating an uninsured motor vehicle for operating the motor vehicle previously.

At 7:20 p.m., police investigated a hit and run that had just occurred in the 300 block of S. 5th Street where a parked 2017 Chevrolet belonging to Nicholas J. Dawtyne, 34, of Oregon, was struck by an unknown vehicle, possibly a silver or tan van or SUV, and left the scene. Tommie L. Hurst, 29, of Oregon, was

arrested at 11:44 p.m. for obstructing a peace officer. Hurst was transported to the Ogle County jail. This violation occurred at the intersection of First and Clay Streets.

Surprise honor for long-standing IHSA official from Forreston

Having grown up in Leaf River and then spending the rest of his life in Forreston and also being an integral part of the school board, Don Cook usually knows what’s going around town.

In a testament to the secretive planning done by school officials, Cook was caught off guard last Friday night at the Forreston-Polo basketball game when principal Travis Heinz took the microphone and asked Don to come out of the bleachers onto the gym.

“I knew nothing about this,” said Cook, a permanent fixture at Forreston sporting events for decades.

The purpose of Heinz’s announcement was to honor Don Cook for 50 years of service as an IHSA official and the contributions he has made to high school sports.

Joining Don at center court was his family, who also surprised Don with their presence.

“Don has officiated football, girls basketball and softball state championships,” Heinz said. “Thank you for all your years of service to the Forrestville school district and the IHSA.” A reception was then held in the school library for Cook and wellwishers, one of which was long-time partner, John Fritts of Dixon.

“Don always seem to enjoy doing games,” said Fritts. “He never went in with a grudge and he did his homework before games. He let us know if we had a tough game or not.”

In the 1990, basketball went to 3-person crews and joining the pair was Tom Smargiassi, now athletic director at Lena-Winslow. Fritts started with Cook in 1988 and stayed with him until recently retiring from officiating.

“One thing we discussed is how boys and girls have gotten so much faster and quicker,” Fritts said.

“When we first started, it was a free throw contest in girls games.

They’ve gotten so much better.”

A much more important partner Don’s life has been his wife of 59 years, Judy. Strangely, Judy Cook is a polar opposite of her husband when it comes to sports.

“I don’t enjoy sports myself. I can count on one hand the number of

He really loved and it was an extra source of income. I was busy with family. We had six kids.”

One of Judy’s duties was laundering Don’s uniforms, as appearance was very important to him. Judy did get the best of her husband before one particular game.

As a lark, she told him that she accidentally laundered his red penalty flags (this was before they were yellow) with his white pants and the pants turned pink. Thinking he was going to have to wear pink pants to officiate, Don began going berserk.

“I thought he was going to explode,” related Judy, who eventually told Don it was only a joke.

Pink pants or not, Don Cook has

managed to survive what is becoming a dying breed of dedicated servants to high school sports.

Last year, at the annual state convention for officials, Don was only one of six out of 1,700 that had 50 years of service.

His reward – a gold watch from the IHSA. “I always enjoyed doing it. It’s not work to me,” said Cook, who has done double duty as a scheduler of officials. “You’re always going to get fans and coaches saying things to you. That’s part of the game. It’s important they we remain in control in officials. We have a responsibility to the integrity of the game.”

In regard to obnoxious fan behavior, one of Don’s favorite memories was from North Boone-Winnebago girls game many years ago.

“I had enough from one of the fans and told him he had to leave,” Cook said. “When I was showering after the game, the Winnebago principal wanted to leave me a note. I thought it might be from the angry fan, but it was from one of the players congratulating me on kicking Mr. so-and-so out. They were so glad I did because they were fed up with him too.”

To make it 50 years is a testament to Don’s physical conditioning, his zest for young people and thick skin.

Forreston athletic director Kyle Zick, like other ADs all over Illinois, know how difficult it has become to find qualified officials.

“He’s a staple of our community,” Zick said. “He’s always been there for the kids and the IHSA is lucky to have him.”

Doreen “Lisa” E. Hewes, 73, of Polo, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2020, at KSB Hospital in Dixon.

Lisa was born September 27, 1946, in Freeport, the daughter of Fred and Mary (Robinson) Smith.

On Dec. 27, 1969 in Polo, she was united in marriage to Richard Hewes. She and Richard had just celebrated 50 years of marriage.

Lisa enjoyed traveling, quilting and gardening.

Sitting with a good book, painting or spending time camping with the family was a highlight of many memories.

He was and charged with operating without no USDOT authority, improper use of registration, no record of duty status, and overweight on registration.

Robinson and the vehicle were placed out of service. Robinson was released on an I-bond.

At approximately 12:30 p.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the intersection of Hedge Road and Water Road in Byron for a one vehicle accident.

After an investigation it was determined that a 2015 Ford F150 pickup driven by Claude Yoakum, 60, of Byron, was traveling on Hedge Road toward Water Road. Yoakum’s vehicle crossed Water Road, at a slow speed, and struck a tree where the vehicle stopped.

Vineyard was treated at Rochelle Community Hospital for his non life-threatening injuries before being transported to Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Jan. 13 Heather Misch, 34, of Creston, was arrested for domestic battery after a welfare check was made at 519 S. Regulator St. Misch was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Electronics recycling events scheduled for 2020 First event is Friday, Jan. 31 on Pines Road in Oregon The Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) will offer residential electronics recycling throughout 2020 on select dates for Ogle County residents.

These drop-offs are held at the County Annex Building at 909 Pines Road in Oregon, located just west of the Illinois 2 and Pines Road intersection.

These events are for Ogle County residential electronics and an ID is requested upon check-in at the event.

Items accepted include all televisions, computers, monitors, computer hardware and cables, printers, FAX machines, desktop copiers, phone systems, cell phones, tablets, laptops, VCR/ DVD units, cable/ satellite boxes, video gaming equipment, radios, digital clocks, stereo equipment (no wooden speakers are accepted), holiday lights, extension cords, fish finders, calculators, rechargeable batteries, CFL bulbs, CD/DVD’s,

and printer cartridges.Microwave ovens are accepted for a $5 fee.

There is a limit of seven large items per vehicle, and boxes and crates filled with smaller items are considered a large item.

Unaccepted items include smoke detectors, vacuum cleaners, heaters, fans, dehumidifiers, sump pumps, motors, tools, toys, lights, lamps, flashlights, appliances, coffee makers, toasters, bread makers, fryers, exercise equipment, and personal hygiene items.

Please remove electronics from boxes and other packaging prior to attending the event.

No business/ institutional electronics accepted at these events.
