Body of one missing boater is found One of two fishermen were lost in Rock River after Nov. 20 accident

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com A body recovered Friday, Jan. 3 near the Dixon dam has been identified as James Swift, 64, of Forreston.

Swift was one of two Ogle County boaters that have been missing since Nov. 20 after their boat capsized near the Oregon dam.

Lee County Coroner Jesse Partington confirmed that Swift was identified by the tattoos on his body. An autopsy took place Monday at the Ogle County Coroner’s office.

“Everything just looked like drowning as the cause,” Partington said Tuesday.

“There was no evidence of foul play or anything else that could have contributed to the accident.”

Ogle County officials were on scene as Dixon Rural Fire and Dixon Fire Department crews pulled Swift’s body from the Rock River near the Dixon dam at 10:30 a.m.

A Dixon Rural Fire boat was seen making its way north above the dam toward the ramp off Assembly Place around 10:15 a.m., where Swift’s body was placed in a Dixon Rural Fire truck and transported to the Ogle County Coroner’s office.

A worker at the power plant at the dam spotted the body and reported it and first responders were dispatched shortly before 10 a.m. to 201 E. River Road, Dixon City Fire Department said.

When the search began, the Oregon Fire Department became the hub of a full-scale search-and-rescue operation.

Twelve area fire departments responded with resources, including firefighters and boats.

Sonar, a remotely-operated vehicle and divers were used Nov. 21, when the body of one of the men was located underwater about a mile south of the dam, but the swift water prevented the ROV and divers from recovering it before it moved to an unknown location.

The IDNR accident report obtained by Sauk Valley Media showed that the men were ejected from their 14-foot Starcraft

boat, registered to Swift. The vessel was found stuck in the low head dam and was difficult to move.

Cold water immersion and environmental conditions affecting visibility (fog) were listed under what contributed to the accident.

“It appeared the vessel had gotten too close to the dam and capsized,” the report says.

Upon inspection of the vessel it was noted that there was an anchor line tied to the right rear side and was frayed with the anchor missing. There were life jackets in the boat stowed in the front unlocked hatch.

After learning of their identities, the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office checked the cell phone statuses of the men and discovered both phones turned off at 9:57 a.m. on Nov. 20.

Taking down the scaffolding will be a very slow process that will take around two weeks. Jan Stilson, Chairman of the Black Hawk Area Restoration and Development Committee, compared it to removing toothpicks.

Stilson said she noticed on Monday that the color of the statue may be a little different than before after the restoration. She called it noticeably more white, while original sculptor Lorado Taft aimed for a color that resembled finished pink marble.

A ceremony dedicated to the restored statue is being planned for the coming

months by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources in a joint effort with local organizations like BARD, Stilson said.

Landscaping around the statue will redo the plaza, rock wall and flooring at the ground level and could start as soon as this summer. The landscaping is slated to be paid for by the IDNR. If not, it will come out of the $180,000 raised by BARD between April and August 2018.

BARD is offering pieces of the Black Hawk statue removed in the restoration process. If interested, send a message to the Facebook page Restoration of the Black Hawk Statue. The organization is a nonprofit. Pieces are being offered for donations in return.

Polo City Clerk Sydney Bartelt said that was part of her inspiration for the discussion topic. She quoted the cost of vests with a vendor.

“This way, if they want their money back, they have to return their vest during business hours,” Bartelt said. “So they won’t be out after that.”

An ordinance would have to be made for the policy, because the city can’t take money from someone if it’s not in ordinance form. Solicitors are currently required to get a permit at city hall. The cost $25 for a day or $200 for a year. Bartlelt and Mandrell said solicitors make citizens uneasy when around.

“The phone rings off the hook when they come to town,” Mandrell said of solicitors.

The overwhelming tone of the discussion was against solicitors.

Aldermen advised City Attorney M. Thomas Suits to look into the legality of a possible ordinance banning solicitors in Polo.

The Polo Police Department has submitted an application for a squad car grant from the United States Department of Agriculture that will cover up to 35 percent of a squad car at some point in the future.

There is no application on the grant. Based off current equipment, the grant could cover as much as $16,000 on a new car.

The Polo City Council discussed a possible ordinance to control the city’s feral cat population at a meeting on Monday. The discussion stemmed from complaints about wild cats and other animals being in larger numbers due to residents feeding them.

Calls have been coming from the west side of town near the Maple Avenue and Mason Street area.

“We’ve had a lot of complaints lately,” Alderman Jim Busser said.

Polo Police Chief Jon Mandrell said residents have gotten ahold of feral cats and called the police expecting them to come and pick them up, when its not in fact their responsibility.

Sterling made a recent ordinance prohibiting the feeding of wild animals within its borders that council members looked at as an example. But, Sterling’s ordinance still allowed the feeding of cats, with restrictions.

In Sterling, the rules for cats include feeding them primarily during daylight hours and restricting feeding times to 30 minutes. Residents can only feed cats on their own property; permission is needed from landlords. Feeding cats on public property is prohibited.

“It’s been a problem for a long time,” Alderman Randy Schoon said.

“And what these people don’t realize is that food attracts these animals.

Possums, skunks, raccoons and coyotes.”

The discussion ended with the idea to have the police go out and speak with residents that have been feeding the feral cats that have been causing the complaints about large numbers of cats.

“We should tell them, point blank, this has to stop. If this does not stop, you’re going to force us to make an ordinance that stops it and you’re going to get fined on a daily basis as long as it goes on,” Schoon said.

Egg nog and moving, part of holiday activities

BY BETTY OBENDORF Curator, Polo Historical Society Christmas is over, most of my cards have been sent, and I have finished the last of the egg nog.

The family all like my homemade egg nog even the children, but it is too rich for me. I like to buy the egg nog in the store, then use ¾ cup of milk to ¼ cup of egg nog. I indulge all Christmas season until it is gone and then I have to wait until next year.

This year we also added moving into the holiday festivities. We bought a house and the whole family had our Christmas on the 22nd in the new home. Then we moved on the 23rd.

Hard to believe we are adapting to a new home at this age but that is exactly what has happened. We needed more room, a walk-in shower, attached garage, and a handicapped ramp.

How many people buy a house with the thought of being 90 in it? That is exactly what we have done and here we are enjoying a new location.

Our kids found it and when I saw it I fell in love with the woodwork. All those years I refinished furniture, I gained a love of wood and working

with wood. I have removed paint to see what was underneath in the way of wood.

I am now finding out about the history of this house. We are beside the grocery store and enjoying the coming and going of people and workers all hours of the day. So we like the location in the midst of all the activity of the town.

From our bedroom window we could see the top of the town Christmas tree.

The house was built in 1956 for Floyd Jones by Ed Boddiger also known as Tom Boddiger. Ted Boddiger, his son, told me he built it by himself and was not in partnership at that time with anyone else.

Floyd Jones was a good friend of Don Heins and they did much hunting together. As a family we were very familiar with Floyd. So it is nice to be in his house.

Ted said he sanded a lot of wood for his father but when this house was being built, Ted was still in school so he really did not have much time to help his father here.

Ted has helped us at Polo Historical Society with his carpentry skills so I am certain he learned much from his father.

The cabinetry in the kitchen, bathroom, and butler’s pantry was all made by hand with nothing purchased commercially. It was indeed a work of art.

The building inspector commented on the fine work done and how well it has held up. As our family walked through the house several commented on the fine work and how someone really took pride in his work.

I do not know when we started with commercial cabinets but we had metal cabinets made

by Youngstown and others for many years. I am enjoying the ones made by Ed Boddiger.

We could not find out much about Floyd Jones’ wife but I think she was gone by the time this house was built. Floyd died in 1965 and his son Bob and his wife Thelma came into the house.

They then added a big family room on the back and Ed Boddiger did not do that work. It was all done in oak and is spectacular. I just love the room.

William Jones, a nephew, was also skilled in woodworking and may have had a part in the family room. Anyone have any ideas?

“Like a Rose in Winter,” accompanied by his wife, Bev. Pastor Charlotte Hoppe led the children’s message for young friends, Katelyn, Laura, and Harper.

Charlotte celebrated the Epiphany, the visit from the wise men. After church, the Christmas decorations were taken down for another year.

On Saturday morning, the men and women of our church gathered for breakfast at a restaurant in Polo.

With about twenty in attendance, everyone enjoyed a wonderful breakfast, fellowship, and fun.

Progress is being made at our new church building. Plans to clean out and fix up the furnishings are being made for our church. The excitement is growing for the new building and our ministry.

This past Tuesday evening, my brother, Ben, and his wife, Jo, invited me to join Jo’s family for a game

night to celebrate the new year.

We shared a great night of dinner, games, and laughter. We greeted the new year and new decade surrounded by family and friends.

Charlotte Hoppe and I spent New Year’s Day together enjoying a couple of movies in Freeport. This trip has become our unofficial tradition to celebrate the new year. It was a fun day of great movies and even greater company.

I was reminded of past New Year’s Eve celebration, including the year we came home to no electricity and no heat. We cuddled under the covers in our winter coats until the morning when everything was once again restored.

I still remember using candles and flashlights to find our way through the house that was dimly lit by the light of the moon. The kids were young and worried about the dark.

They climbed into our bed where we could keep warm and safe together and we waited.

Over the Advent season, Charlotte brought messages of living in light and darkness. Sometimes we are left in the dark without warning. Our faith that the light will return makes it easier to wait in the dark.

Even though I know that God is guiding me, I do worry on occasion.

In those moments of absolute darkness. I sit alone and try to remember that the darkness won’t last. It may take longer than expected, but His light will shine through.

I hope to see you next Sunday at our church in the country. Come and join us for a time of worship and a message to carry you through the week. No matter the depth of the darkness, God’s light can drive it away.

Donna Wright didn’t have to eat a bagel at home for lunch on Monday, something she’s found herself doing all too often lately.

Area seniors gathered for the first time on Monday at the Rock River Center in Oregon for Lifescape’s senior dining program.

Lifescape works in partnership with senior centers, churches, high rises, and restaurants to offer multiple dining sites in Winnebago, Boone, Ogle, and Lee Counties.

There used to be a congregate meal site at Fiesta Palace in Mt. Morris, but the restaurant closed down.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Wright said. “They closed that place in Mt. Morris. I used to go there for breakfast probably three days a week.”

Darlene Raney and her husband, Doug, of Oregon were in attendance for lunch. The couple said they have missed having a location like it.

They used to attend the Mt. Morris location quite a bit. They plan to come to the center at least once or twice a week going forward.

“We’ve eaten at home more,” Darlene Raney said. “We would just have a sandwich. Something less nutritious than here. It’s a very reasonable price. It’s a suggested donation.”

The meals are free. The suggested donation is usually around $2 or $3.

Lifescape brings the food to the Rock River Center and serves it there. Lifescape Executive Director Mike Hughes hopes as many people that could use them come in for meals in the future.

“I think it’s definitely needed,” Raney said. “But I think it’s going to take a while to build it back up because they haven’t had it. People have been so disappointed not having it and they’ve gotten out of the habit of using it and wanting to use it.”

Lifescape and the Rock River Center plan to continue to try to get the word out to get seniors out of their homes to get active and socialize to stay in good health.

“To me, it’s a home run for both of our organizations,” Hughes said.

Lifescape will be serving meals at Rock River Center Monday through Friday from 11:30 am to noon.

Participants must be 60 or older or accompanied by a spouse who is 60 or older. Interested participants

Pines Roller Skating Center has a new owner Jones also owns two other businesses along Pines Road

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com It should be skating as normal despite a change in ownership at the White Pines Roller Skating Center.

Rebecca Jones purchased the 53-year-old landmark two weeks ago. She is also the owner of the Pine Creek Canyon wedding venue and Pine Creek Cabins Jones said the icon will continue to operate as a roller rink as it has since 1947.

“It worked really well with my current portfolio,” Jones said. “This business is mostly in the winter unlike my other ones. There aren’t many winter weddings. It also borders my properties. It made sense from a business standpoint.”

The roller rink is located at 6929 West Pines Road just west of the canyon wedding venue, and across the road from the White Pines State Park.

Jones started discussing purchasing the business with the former owners, Dave and Maggie Johnson, in September and October. Dave Johnson had owned the rink since 1984 and recently relocated to Nashville, Tennessee.

The reported amount of the transaction was $240,000.

As the new owner, Jones plans to possibly organize more private events like adult skates and nights with live bands. She also plans to improve the exterior of the property, including power washing and cleaning up the front of the building.

“It needs a little bit of a facelift,” Jones said. “We want to make it have more curb appeal.”

The roller rink’s manager with the previous regime, Amber Becker, made an agreement with Jones to stay on to run the rink’s day-to-day operations. But Jones made a point to have the sale completed by the new year so she could help with preparing for the rink’s overnight event on New Year’s Eve. The rink was open from 8 p.m. on Dec. 31 until 7 a.m. on Jan. 1.

“It was a really busy day, the busiest of my year,” Jones said. “It was awesome and I was impressed by the staff. My family was there to help, too.”

ins in April 2019. She found success in her first year, noting that bookings in both are up and weddings are booked through the entire year of 2020. But, she has no plans to buy any other properties in the area any

time soon.

“That’s my New Years resolution,” Jones said. “Never say never, but I want to focus on building and improving what I have.”

Beth is currently an administrative associate within the Department of Anesthesiology at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, as part of the Penn State Health health care system. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in education at the Penn State University – Harrisburg campus.

sylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) in Harrisburg.

In fall 2017, Beth met Jason at a part-time ministry school, based in Harrisburg, only several months after relocating to the United States after teaching English as a Second Language in Taiwan for seven years.

Currently, Beth and Jason serve in the local Harrisburg House of Prayer, which is affiliated with the International House of Prayer in Kansas City, Missouri.

The couple is planning a wedding in September 2020 in the area of Harrisburg.

Spinning wheel is topic of Jan. 20 Quilt Guild meeting

Country Crossroads Quilt Guild will meet Monday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Forreston Grove Church, 7246 Freeport Rd. Forreston.

The evening program will be presented by Jared Monroe, from Polo.

He will be discussing the history of spinning from dropspindles to the development of the spinning wheel; the variety of spinning wheels, and the three drive systems of spinning wheels.

He will end with demonstrations of drop spinning and spinning on a modern wheel.

Guild meetings are held on the third Monday of each month. Visitors are charged $5 at the door.

Don Bybee Memorial Scholarship The Don Bybee Memorial Scholarship is jointly funded by the Bybee family and the Ogle County Farm Bureau.

Bybee served for many years as a director on the Ogle County Farm Bureau Board and this $1,000 scholarship recognizes his passion for offering opportunities for Ogle County youth to advance their education.

Mark Detig Memorial Scholarship This is a $1,000 scholarship funded jointly by the Ogle County Pork Producers Association and the Farm Bureau. The Mark Detig Memorial Scholarship will be awarded annually. Detig served as past president and director on the pork producers association board of directors and was involved in 4-H youth activities in Ogle County.

Del Flessner Memorial Scholarship The $1,500 Del Flessner Memorial Scholarship honors the former manager of the Ogle County Farm Bureau.

Two $1,000 General Farm Bureau Scholarships are also available.

Ag Technology Scholarship This $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to students studying in an ag technology field similar to diesel mechanics, crop technician or similar fields of study.

Eligible applicants for these scholarships must be a high school graduate, an Ogle County Farm Bureau member or dependent of a member, accepted at an accredited university or college and pursue an agricultural or agricultural-related field of study, a resident of Illinois, and demonstrate a financial need.

Applicants can be graduating high school seniors or students currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.

Applicants successfully completed and submitted will be judged on criteria including: academic performance, demonstrated interest in agriculture, financial need and character/personality.

Growing prairie plants to be the topic on Jan. 16 Rochelle couple to talk about their greenhouses at 7 p.m.

The Jan. 16 meeting of the Wild Ones will include a program on growing prairie plants.

Peggy and Bryan Redington of Rochelle will present: “How to Grow Prairie Plants from Seeds, Roots, and Cuttings” at Rock Valley College’s Physical Education Center at 3301 N. Mulford Road in Rockford, on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m.

Since 2017, the Redingtons have owned and operated Country Road Greenhouses (CRG), a native plant nursery with 11 greenhouses on 6 acres near Rochelle, and two acres of prairie which are currently being expanded to allow for more seed collection.

The focus at CRG is to provide native prairie plants, grasses, sedges, and rushes to forest preserve districts, park districts, natural landscapers, native restoration projects, and groups that promote the use of native plants (including the local chapter of Wild Ones).

The Redingtons grow all of their plants from seed or cuttings which are collected on the property and they are currently working on providing a source of native trees and shrubs.

The common milkweed plant produces seeds in the fall. plants, pollinators, and wildlife in the region. They maintain a hive of over 10,000 honeybees.

Peggy will describe the basics of growing prairie plants from seeds, roots, and cuttings, and creating a vernalization period by sowing seeds and storing them in a cooler for the winter.

She is a graduate of Kishwaukee College with an AAS Horticulture degree in greenhouse management, with certificates in greenhouse pro-

duction and garden center management.

She has 20-plus years in the horticulture industry, attaining positions in greenhouse management, nursery management, display gardens, landscape design and cannabis production.

She was formerly the greenhouse manager of the Kishwaukee College horticulture program, where her emphasis was to support the instruction of all the horticulture

program students, while also creating, maintaining, and beautifying the campus display gardens.

Fan feedback was interesting at Blackhawk Center M

y intention this past Friday was to cover Oregon boys basketball game against Morrison. Not realizing Shaw Media had already sent a reporter, I spent the evening as a casual fan.

There is a freedom in not being consigned to charting every play, keeping stats, conducting post-game interviews and penning an article before deadline.

Instead, the opportunity for social interaction presents itself. With my mind peripherally on game, a good time was had visiting.

The first order of business was questioning the atmosphere inside the Blackhawk Center. Chris Donahue told me of overhearing a Morrison fan saying it was the quietest gym he had ever been at.

I’ve felt for years that the Blackhawk Center crowds do not engage in the game itself. Sure, a facility like the BHC doesn’t have the ambience of an actual gym, but the docile fan behavior needs to be noted.

Chris, OHS class of ‘76 pom pon member told me how it used to be when fans of all ages weren’t afraid to stand up and cheer for the team. Not so much anymore.

Our cheerleaders were gone for the Morrison game because of a competition, but even when they are present, there is limited support for their efforts.

It’s as if it has become unfashionable to stand up and root for the home team. Traditionally, basketball is the one sport where cheering has the most effect.

Mike Ritter shared with me phenomena at the school called the “Sons of Oregon”. It was a group of male supporters, most football players and wrestlers, who brought life to basketball games with a vigorous approach to cheering.

“The Sons of Oregon were definitely entertain-

ing and made games fun,” he mentioned. “Other schools were gunning for them because they often had chants that may have been considered offensive. They rehearsed the chants and at first they sounded inappropriate, but usually made them clean at he end.”

Though the SOA may have eventually disbanded, Coach Quinn Virgil wouldn’t mind seeing a 2020 version of the Sons of Oregon, but maybe a milder version in today’s PC society.

“I think the last of them was around 1995,” Virgil said after the game. “They were something.”

The SOA wore light blue superman shirts with Sons of Oregon printed on the back. With games being contested in the cozy atmosphere of the old gym, they had to be quite a sight and a source of encouragement for the team.

Virgil has a couple of ideas to bring back some of those memories. With Trey Woolsey approaching Bob Barnett’s career scoring record, Virgil would like to bring Barnett back the might the record is broken.

“We don’t have very good record keeping, but I think Bob’s 1,598 points is the most ever scored,” Virgil said. “I’d also like to see about bringing the (super-sectional) 1979 team back.”

I also had the chance to meet Oregon principal Heidi Deininger for the first time, as she was filling in for Mike Lawton.

She told me of efforts being made to improve the vibe at sporting events.

“We have a strategic plan to grow our student participation,” she said. “We need to get people back connected to the school.”

Deininger agreed that there is an increased level of self-consciousness that inhabits students from being like their predecessors from generations past.

“We are starting in kindergarten to be proud Oregon Hawks,” she added. “We are very intentional on this plan.”

I think the student support has been there for football, but girls and boys basketball deserves and needs more than what they are getting from the fan base.

As much as cheering has decreased at basketball games, coverage by TV stations has increased.

Shooting a video feed for the 10pm newscast was Scott Leber of WTVO. If Don Werntz and Jeff Leon are the hardest working radio guys around, Leber is the unquestioned hardest-working TV person.

There is no one in this area even close to keeping up with Leber. For that matter, the 85 hours plus he works during the schools year and 65 hours in summer might qualify as tops statewide.

He spent the entire game filming and then hung around to interview Trey Woolsey and his father afterwards. That’s commitment for a very mediocre game that had no conference implications.

“Stuff has to be covered,” said Leber, who also can be seen on college and professional beats.

The 56-year old Leber came to Rockford 30 years ago from Ohio, where he ran track and cross country in high school and has been a mainstay on the area sports scene ever since. That’s saying something in a business like local TV where there is much turnover.

For the rest of you that I spoke with and you don’t see your name in the paper, my apologies.

Robert Eugene Bennett, 95, died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 at his home in Leaf River.

He was born June 14, 1924 in Pine Rock Township, Ogle County, the son of John and Mabel (Stonebraker) Bennett.

He attended Kings High School for 3 years and graduated from Stillman Valley High School in 1943.

Bob married Doris Cleo Grover at the bride’s home in Chana on March 25, 1945 while on leave from the Navy.

They spent over 60 years of marriage together.

He entered the Navy on March 9, 1944 during WW 2 and was honorably discharged as a Seamen First Class USNR on Jan. 11, 1946.

Bob was employed at Ogle Service Company for 16 years and was self

JOHN JACOB HUBBARD John Jacob Hubbard, 89, passed away on Friday, Jan. 3, 2020 in Walnut Acres Nursing Home, Freeport.

John was born on June 4, 1930 in Mendota, the son of William C. & Esther (Vogler) Hubbard.

He graduated from high school in Dubuque, Iowa and then he received his college degree from Dubuque University.

John served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He married Margaret Vorthmann on June 20, 1952 and she preceded in death on Sept. 29, 1985.

Bob also served as a committeeman for the Leaf River Boy Scouts. Bob was very proud of his Farmall Collection and loved his farm.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his wife Doris in 2005, his son Dennis in 2015, his grandson Dennis James “Jamie” Bennett, is sisters; Harriett, Ruth, and Mary, and brothers Paul, James, and Carl.

He is survived by his two daughters; Joy (Jon) Wirth of Freeport and Carla (Bradley) Miller of Leaf River, daughterin-law Joan Bennett of Plainfield, sister Joan (James) Proper of Dixon, and brother Frank (Gail) Bennett of Princeton, six grandchildren; Angela (Dave) LoConte, Jill (Ryan) Rissman, Kara (Chris) Sussek,

Hannah (Sean) Hosseini, Heidie Miller, and Haylie (Dallas) Evers, five great grandchildren Madalynn, Bennet, Allison, Layla, and Cora and a sixth great grandchild will arrive in June, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 6 at the Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 S. 7th Street Oregon, with the Rev. Tim Mitchell pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Dixon officiating.

Burial followed at the Lightsville Cemetery near Leaf River. A memorial luncheon followed the graveside service at the Prairie View Golf Course in Byron.

Visitation was Sunday, Jan. 5, from 1-4 p.m. at the Funeral Home in Oregon followed by a 4 p.m. Masonic Service.

A memorial fund is established in Bob’s name.

Later she would obtain a masters degree.

Her first elementary teaching job was at Ashton for a year, followed by stints at Rahn Elementary in Mt. Morris and Etnyre Middle School in Oregon.

Kathy’s favorite subject to teach was history, with math her least favorite.

School kids were her first love, as borne out by the wide number that consider “Mrs. Colbert” their favorite teacher.

Kathy especially appreciated the relationship with fellow grade-school teachers and they appreciated her quiet manner and willingness to take on any project.

She was also grateful for all the sup-

port and help offered by the retired teaching community in her time of need.

Kathy’s favorite pasttimes were reading and watching football on TV. She was also noted as a quilter and home decorator.

Her greatest joy was spending time with twin 6-year old grand daughters.

On her very own, Kathy relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah two years ago to be with them.

She stayed for six months before returning to Oregon.

She is survived by her husband Andy of Oregon, son Blair Colbert of Salt Lake City, daughter Jorie (Carlton) Getz of Salt Lake City, grandchildren Alexandra and Liliya Getz, father Dick Hilliard of King, Wisconsin, brother Rich Hilliard of Tampa, Florida, brother Rob Hilliard of Tomah Wisconsin, mother-in-law Bobbie

Colbert of Rochelle, brother-in-laws Bo (Cindy) Colbert of North Carolina and Tony (Catherine) Colbert of Wyoming, sister-in-laws Jodi (Brett) Kemp of Montana and Suzie Colbert of Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her mother Delores.

The visitation will be from 4–7 p.m.

Monday, Jan. 13 at Farrell-Holland-Gale Funeral Home, 110 Seventh St., Oregon.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 14, also at the funeral home with Pastor Chris Bradshaw of Crossroads Community Church of Polo officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Kathy’s name to the Oregon Educational Foundation. Cremation care has been provided by Farrell-Holland-Gale, with the ashes to be scattered over the mountains of Salt Lake City by request of the deceased.

John worked for several industries but he retired from Honeywell, Freeport.

While working for Honeywell he began to farm and once he retired he farmed full time.

John was an active member with St. James Lutheran Church, Member of the Leaf River Legion where he served as Chaplin for many years, he was a member of the 60’s Alive Group, and he loved his time with his family.

John is survived by his daughter: Marta Poppen, Forreston; grandchildren: Marcie (Loran Marceau) Poppen, Polo; Melissa (Nate) Husman, East Moline; and Staff Sargent Melinda (Mindy) Poppen, Albuquerque, New Mexico; great-grandchildren: Sawyer and Keandria Marceau, Polo; sister: Joyce Anderson, Tacoma, Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

John is preceded in death by his par-

ents; wife: Margaret; brother: William; sister: Janice Caufield; and son in law: Mark Poppen.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 9, at 10:30 a.m. in the St. James Lutheran Church, Forreston, with Rev. Karyn Kost officiating. Burial was in West Grove Cemetery, Forreston.

Visitation was held on Wednesday, Jan. 8, from 4- 6 p.m. in Finch Funeral Home, 405 East Hitt, Mt. Morris.

Kathy Lynn (Hilliard) Colbert, 63, of Oregon, passed away Jan. 4, 2020 at the UW Madison Hospital. She died a peaceful and contented death with family by her side, six months after being diagnosed with cancer.

Kathy was born Sept. 14, 1956 in Rockford, the daughter of Richard and Delores Hilliard. She grew up in Holcomb, before moving to Carbondale, Colorado, where she graduated from high school. It was there she developed a life-long appreciation of mountains and inklings of being a grade-school teacher.

In her first semester at Kishwaukee College in 1976, she met her future husband Andy Colbert. The two were married on March 31, 1979 at Elim Reformed Church in Kings.

A son and daughter were soon born and Kathy interrupted her studies to

employed until early 2000’s as a painting contractor.

There probably wasn’t a barn in Ogle county or even surrounding counties that he didn’t touch with a paint brush. He was a lifetime member of the Leaf River American Legion, charter member of the Leaf River Lion’s Club, and a 32nd degree Master Mason.

He served as civil defense director of Ogle County for 10 years, and served the Leaf River Fire Department for over 50 years as a fireman, chief, and then as a trustee. He also served 10 years with the Leaf River Town Board in various capacities as Police Commissioner, sewer and water commissioner, and street and alley commissioner.

OBITUARIES THE REV. PAUL S. PARK The Rev. Paul S. Park, 68, of Peoria, formerly of Morton, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria, from long-term complications following cancer.

He was born on Oct. 15, 1951, in Rockford, to Richard and Ruth (Ehmen) Park.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rosalie “Rosy” (DeWall) Park, who he met while teaching at the Mt. Morris School District. They married in Forreston. on June 7, 1975.

Also surviving are one sister, Claudia (Joel) Guenther of Littleton, Colorado.; two sisters-in-law, Colleen (Larry) Dikkers and Jean (the late Neil) DeWall, both of Baileyville; one nephew, Joel (Kelly) DeWall of Johnson Creek, Wisconsin.; five nieces, Anne (Mike) Wisniewski of Hoffman Estates, Krista (Kurt) Butler of Machesney Park, Sarah (the late Tim) Walker of Barrington, Stacie (Chuck) Williar of Sycamore, and Carol (Wayne) Jackowski of German Valley; and many

STANLEY L. WEBER Stanley L. Weber, 96, a longtime member of the Dixon community and citizen of the year in 1997, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2019, at Lutheran Hillside Village in Peoria.

Stan was born on March 9, 1923, in St Louis, Missouri to Walter and Lydia (Hill) Weber. He was raised in East St Louis, with his parents and three sisters.

Stan was an honorably discharged WWII U.S. Navy Veteran. He met his wife Beverly Barber at the University of Illinois, Champaign, and they were married August 31, 1947, in Neoga.

The education system brought Stan and Bev to Dixon in 1962. Stan was Superintendent of Dixon Public Schools from 1963 until he retired in 1983.

Stan was an organizing member for Sauk Valley College and a Charter Contributor to the Sauk Endowment Fund.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother-in-law, Neil DeWall.

Pastor Paul received his Bachelor’s degree in Asian Studies and History Education from Augustana College in Rock Island, Master’s degree in Special Education from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, and Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

Prior to meeting his wife Rosy, Pastor Paul traveled to India, Thailand, and Japan. His Asian experiences were unique in that he served in the Christian Mission Field in India, was involved in Agriculture in Japan, and was an Ordained Theravadin Buddhist Monk in Thailand.

During his 35 years in Peoria, Pastor Paul served as a chaplain at OSF St. Francis Medical Center and was the former

Director of Spiritual Care at Lutheran Hillside Village.

After completing his advanced units of Clinical Pastoral Education at Methodist Medical Center, Pastor Paul went on to become a Fellow in what is now known as the Association of Professional Chaplains.

Pastor Paul was an ELCA pastor, serving as an Interim Minister at churches across Illinois, including Maryville, Springfield, Macomb, Decatur, Canton, and most recently, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Golden.

Pastor Paul’s ministry was extremely important to him and was his true passion in life.

He was incredibly generous with his time and spent many countless hours visiting and praying with those who were sick or hospitalized, consoling those who were grieving, counseling those in need, and officiating many weddings and

baptisms.

Through it all, he influenced and touched the lives of so many. He will be greatly missed by the love of his life, Rosy, and many others.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

Visitation for Pastor Paul will begin at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 10, at Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria. At 6 p.m., a Celebration of Life service will be held, with Pastor Craig Swenson officiating.

A graveside burial of cremated remains will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 11, at White Oak Cemetery in Forreston. A luncheon will follow at Forreston Reformed Church.

Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church in Peoria, Forreston Reformed Church in Forreston, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

He was a member of the U of I Alumni Association, the National Education Association (NEA), the Illinois Education Association (IEA) and the American School Administrators (ASA).

He was a member of the National Council for Exceptional Children and served on the board of Sinnissippi Mental Health.

He was in service organizations that included Dixon Rotary Club, Elks Club, Dixon Garden Club, and Dixon Chamber of Commerce. He volunteered with CASA and Hospice.

The Dixon YMCA was important to Stan. He was an active participant on the original building fund drive in the late 1960’s and continued to support the YMCA for his Dixon years.

He was a devoted member of the First Presbyterian Church of Dixon.

Bev passed away June 20, 2019. Stan is survived by daughters Penny (Bill) Hinrichs of Rochester, Cheryl (Ron) Budzinski of Peoria, and Cindy (Bob) Byrd of Oregon: six grandchildren Tim (Nina) Hinrichs of Los Altos California, John (Mari) Hinrichs of Chicago, Nikki Budzinski of Chicago, Annie (Andres) Bardelas of Geneva, Tyler (Kaitlin) Byrd of Bloomington, and Wyatt (Trisha) Byrd of Lake in the Hills; along with seven great-grandchildren - Alex and Nathan Hinrichs; Noah, Emma and Will Bardelas, Amelia Byrd, and Asher Byrd.

Stan is also survived by sister Lois Sheffler of Ballwin Missouri.

Together Stan and Bev enjoyed traveling, playing bridge, golfing, playing tennis, snow skiing, square dancing, ballroom dancing, and piloting.

They enjoyed spending time with their three daughters and their families, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Cremation rites have been accorded.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 4, at the First Presbyterian Church, 110 E. Third St in Dixon.

Nevenhoven, 26, of Byron, was arrested on North Tower Road and Lynn Road for driving while license suspended and on an Ogle County warrant. Nevenhoven was transported to the Ogle County Jail. He posted bond and has a return court date of Jan. 24 at 9 a.m.

Jan. 1 Eduardo Orozco-Ramos, 26, of Rochelle, was arrested at 1:30 a.m. for domestic battery at an address on Lilac Lane in rural Rochelle following a report of a disturbance. Orozco-Ramos was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held without bond until he could be seen by a judge.

• SHERIFF Continued from Page 17 Jan. 3 Bradley R. Benhoff, 62, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol and illegal transportation of alcohol. At approximately 7 a.m., Ogle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the 10,000 block of North Illinois 2 for a one vehicle rollover accident.

After an investigation it was determined that a 2018 Hyundai Elantra being driven by Benhoff was northbound when he drove off the roadway.

The Hyundai struck a tree and rolled onto the passenger’s side. Benhoff was extricated from the vehicle by Byron Fire Personnel and transported to Swedish American Hospital where he was issued

citations and given an I-Bond.

Benhoff is due to appear in Ogle County Court at a later date.

Both Coleman and Bryant are being held at the Ogle County Correctional Center in lieu of bond.

Jan. 4 Christine Starkweather, 55, of Hanover, was arrested for no valid driver’s license at Illinois 64 and Illinois 26.

Starkweather was then transported to the Ogle County Jail where she was held in lieu of bond.

Jan. 5 James Watkins, 26, of Rockford, was arrested for driving while license suspended on Interstate 39 after being stopped for speeding. Watkins was held in lieu of bond at the Ogle County Jail.

Tony Coleman, 22, of Chicago, was arrested for driving while license suspended and on an outstanding Whiteside County failure to appear warrant on Interstate 88 near Rochelle after being stopped for speeding. Eight parking citations and 22 verbal/ written warnings were issued from Dec. 23 through Jan. 5.

OREGON POLICE Oregon Police Chief Darin DeHaan reports the following police activity.

Dec. 24 At 2:31p.m., police responded to a disturbance call in the 300 block of N. 4th Street resulting in the arrest of Andrew N. Bjorkman, 33, of Oregon, for disorderly conduct. Bjorkman was also issued a state citation for being an intoxicated pedestrian in the roadway and a city citation for the ordinance violation of unlawful consumption in a public place.

Bjorkman was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 26 Richard L. Gallagher, 35, of Oregon, was arrested at 11:58 p.m. for driving while license suspended. Gallagher was also issued citations for loud, excessive noise – no muffler, and illegal transportation of alcohol as a driver. Gallagher was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

McKnight, 47, Byron, that struck pedestrian, Rodney T. Pitt, 69, of Oregon. Pitt was transported by Oregon EMS to KSB Hospital in Dixon. McKnight was issued a citation for failure to yield to a pedestrian in crosswalk.

Dec. 29 Brandon J. Meinors, 33, of Oregon, was issued a citation at 3:25 p.m. for use of a cell phone while driving. This violation occurred in the 600 block of N. 4th Street.
