Warm weather helps finish 2019 harvest ‘Everyone is ready to put this year behind them.’

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com On Christmas Day this year, Polo farmer Brian Duncan had weather in the 50s and an employee with free time.

So, they decided to go out and get some fall tillage done.

“It’s been a real blessing,” Duncan said. “It certainly beats snowy, windy and cold. The frost came out of the ground.”

Duncan said on Dec. 26 that he anticipated harvesting the remainder of his corn for the year on that day or the day after. Abnormally-warm late-December weather has come to the aid of area farmers that were put in a tough spot by extreme weather earlier this year.

A snowstorm on Halloween pushed anticipated harvest completions to this time of year for some. A late, wet planting season in the spring didn’t help either. Neither did above-normal rains in August and September. Tempera-

tures were dry and neared the 60-degree point last week.

“This is the kind of weather we were hoping we’d get in October and November,” Ogle Farm Bureau Manager Ron Kern said.

Kern saw two or three farmers in his area were out working on Christmas Day as well. He estimates that 90 to 95 percent of corn in Ogle County has been harvested, while beans are likely all harvested. Duncan said he’s seen ‘quite a few’ soybean fields left out in the area and added that there might be more of those than corn, due to not drying well.

Drying wet crops has been a hurdle in this abnormal harvest season. Every single bushel has to be dried. Crops are placed in bins with a finite amount of space that use large amounts of propane.

The process can create a bottleneck in the harvest operation.

Purchasing gas to fuel the dryers is a large expense to area farmers that use them. Warmer weather has helped remedy that problem as well.

“Those working with dryers are being helped out by the fact that the cost is lower,” Lee County Farm Bureau Manager Dannelle Burrs said. “It’s a big difference with starting temperature being 50 degrees as opposed to something like 10 degrees.”

The warmer temperatures have also allowed some farmers to be able to prepare for 2020 planting season by conducting fall tillage and fertilizer application. Frost was in the ground in recent weeks, making most think they wouldn’t have the chance to do it.

That chance was had with the warm temperatures, as long as fields weren’t too wet.

“Getting back out to do fall tillage is tremendous,” Duncan said. “Any fall tillage is better than anything in the spring.”

Despite good fortune being brought late by the weather, the year was still a tough one for area farmers, Kern said.

“It really hasn’t been that good,” Kern said. There will hopefully be a bounce in prices after the first of the year. Commodity prices really haven’t jumped.

Guys with wet beans were being docked a dollar at the elevator. Drying has been an expense. It hasn’t been what I would call a profitable year.”

Kern, Burns and Duncan can’t recall ever experiencing a year like this one in the farming industry with a snowy Halloween and a 55-degree Christmas.

“I will guarantee you that 40 years from now, farmers will remember 2019,” Kern said.

Close to 70 people braved drizzle and cooler temps to take part in the second annual KB Egg Nog Jog on Saturday, Dec. 28 in Oregon.

Donning cozy blue Egg Nog Jog hats runners and walkers embarked on a 3K run-walk through the streets of Oregon. A cup of egg nog was offered to participants as when they finished the run-walk.

The un-timed event started and ended inside the Oregon VFW and included music, food and drinks.

Proceeds from the event will benefit those in the area community who are burdened by a medical crisis.

The KB Fund was established by April Roos and her family after April was diagnosed in February of 2012 with Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma.

She was 30 years old, a mom to an 8 week old baby boy.

In June 2018, April passed away after a courageous sixyear battle with cancer.

“Her compassion, generosity, and mission to help others will continue through the KB Fund. The KB Tough Run continues to be held each June and is the major fundraising event for the fund,” states the KBtoughrun website.

More than 80 families have been helped by the KB Fund. Their needs ranged from expenses related to cancer treatments, chronic illness, accident recovery, special needs therapy, premature births and more.

When duty calls: Serving overseas is part of life Newman watched his family open presents via video feed

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com On Christmas morning this year, Oregon resident Jerry Newman watched his family open presents.

But he had to do it via video chat 6,400 miles away with nine hours of time difference. The Army National Guard Col. in the 108th Sustainment Brigade is on his third deployment in Iraq.

“That’s a saving grace,” Newman said. “The thing for me is, I get to see them with a smile on their face.

I would think with them, they get to see me. They know I’m alright and everything is OK.” Jerry and his wife, Angie have four children: Garrett, Nick, Abigail and Andrew. Photo supplied. went to Iraq for a year in 2005. In 2012, he was in Afghanistan for nine months. This time, he left in August and he’ll return in May. Back in 2005, the family was able to meet Jerry in Germany over the holidays and spend 17 days with him while deployed. This year was different.

“A lot of people don’t understand that he’s gone and that he’s not coming home for Christmas,” Angie said.

“They say, ‘Well, why can’t he come home?’ When he’s deployed, they don’t get that chance. None of them.

I think there’s like 46 people on his team and none of those folks can come home.”

A normal day on base in Iraq for Jerry is spent at a tactical operations center. He has two or three teams that go out in the morning and return at night and debrief on what happened and what they saw.

And then they do it all over again the next day.

“It’s like Groundhog Day every day,” Jerry said, referencing the 1993 film.

Internet and apps like WhatsApp have made it easier for Jerry to communicate with his family back home. He video chats, calls and texts during hours that work with the time change. ly, it was shut down for a couple of weeks due to protests.

The facility in Iraq is decorated for Christmas. Jerry and his unit held a gift exchange. As far as Christmas gifts for home, Jerry has always tried to buy presents for his family from where he’s deployed to send back, even if there isn’t always much of a selection.

“At least they get something from me that they know I’m thinking about them,” Jerry said.

Two of Jerry’s children, Garrett (25) and Abigail (22) have decided to follow in their father’s footsteps.

Garrett is a 1st. Lt. in the Air Force. He graduated from the Air Force Academy in Colorado. He’ll be finishing his pilot training in January and could be deployed in the months that follow. Growing up, he wanted to be like his dad. He just wanted to fly instead of walking around.

Abigail has followed her father’s footsteps even more than her brother has. Like Jerry, she joined ROTC and then the Illinois National Guard.

She’s also on the officer path, just

like him.

Abigail and Jerry do a lot of the same physical training tests. They text back and forth to see who scored higher. Being in the same unit as her father, Abigail had to tell people not to treat her differently because of who her dad is.

“They’re big shoes to fill, but it’s a good challenge,” Abigail said. “I’d like to pass him up eventually.”

“I’m extremely proud of all my kids,” Jerry said. “But to see that they chased their dreams and are actually succeeding at them, that was more rewarding than anything else. I’m amazed by all of them every day. But there’s no greater purpose than serving your country.”

Angie wasn’t surprised or upset by her children joining the military.

It’s just what she’s used to, and she knows how proud they are of their dad. Jerry refers to Angie as the real “trooper” of the family and as the one that holds everything together.

Until May. “That’s the highlight of being home, is the day I arrive back in Illinois when I actually get to put eyes on them and hug them,” Jerry said.

“That’s what I’m looking forward to most.”

A new state law requiring rabies shots for cats starts Jan. 1.

The law requires counties to set vaccination and registration fees for cats. The Ogle County Board set fees in September. A 1-year tag and vaccination fee for spayed or neutered cats younger than 9 months is $12.

There’s a $5 discount for cats that are microchipped. A 3-year tag and vaccination will cost $30.

Cats that are microchipped are eligible for $15 discount for a 3-year tag.

A 1-year tag with 1-year vaccination for cats older than 9 months is $24. Microchipped cats are eligible for a $5 discount. A 3-year tag and vaccination will cost $70, but owners of microchipped cats are eligible for a $15 discount.

By Karen Merlak Our northern Illinois weather is out of the ordinary with warm sunshine on Christmas and rain instead of snow in the forecast. We are grateful for the unusual weather for the end of December. For all of God’s gifts, we are truly thankful.

This morning in church, we were greeted by Martha Johannsen. In Pastor Charlotte Hoppe’s absence, Nancy Hopkins led our service. Judy Nettz led the children’s message for her grandchildren, Carrie and Evie Riopell, and James and Nancy’s granddaughter, Hanna Klein.

For our service, the worship com-

mittee prepared readings of bible verses, poems, and stories. Between the readings, we sang several Christmas hymns. Vicki Hay, Larry Riffle, Brian Toms, and Sheryl Hopkins led the readings and singing for the Christmas service.

This past Tuesday evening, our church held its annual Christmas Eve Program. Led by Pastor Charlotte Hoppe, there were several readers telling the story of Jesus’s birth.

The service ended with the singing of “Silent Night” by candlelight.

After the program, everyone met downstairs for refreshments and fellowship. Families visited over cookies and punch, celebrating our last Christmas in our current church.

We will carry our many Christmas memories to our new building.

For Christmas day, Don and Vicki Hay hosted their daughter, Christine Stephens, and her children, Sydney, Owen, and Avery for the holiday dinner. In the afternoon, the children enjoyed the nice weather, playing outside for most of the afternoon.

Dec. 19 Brian M. Barrett, 42, of Polo, was cited for disobeying a stop sign. Barrett was released on an I-Bond.

Dec. 25 Stephanie J. Kuzlik, 45, of Polo, was cited for speeding, 44 mph in a 30 mph speed zone. Kuzlik was released on an I-Bond.

James and Nancy Hopkins hosted several family members for the holiday season, including son, Eric Ellingsen and his husband, Andrew, and daughters, Amy Hopkins and Edie Klein, her husband, Dave, and their daughter, Hanna.

James and Nancy’s son, Jim Hopkins, wife, Dana, and son, Connor, also joined the family for dinner and visiting. Jim and Dana’s daughter, Abigail, is on college break and visiting a friend over the holiday.

This past Thursday evening, I joined Charlotte for dinner and a movie at her home. Charlotte’s cats Sophie and Ruthie were quite welcoming, as they were curled up next to me on the couch.

Lyle and Sheryl Hopkins hosted their family this afternoon for Christmas. Their children, Deb and Phil Ohlwine, Mike and Rena Hopkins, John and Susan Hopkins, Ellen and Justin Rahn, and several grandchildren home from college and the service enjoyed an afternoon of fun and games.

Ben, his wife, Jo, and their sons, Hayden and Garrett, invited me over for dinner and games to celebrate the holiday. We had a fun evening of laughter and visiting.

Hayden will be heading back to college next month.

My Christmas day was quite different this year. My children were not able to make it home this time.

I slept in, cooked my holiday dinner with all of my favorites, and connected with each of my children.

The day was quite peaceful. The peace I felt does not come from quiet home. It comes from trusting God. This season of hope, love, joy, and peace fills each of us as we remember the night when Jesus was born.

Now, we can take these gifts into the New Year. For each challenge and obstacle, each celebration and fellowship, we can bring His love and peace to guide us.

I hope to see you next Sunday as we start a new year and a new decade with God’s love. Our church family welcomes you and your family to come and worship with us.

The penalty is the same as if it were a dog, if it’s not registered or current, the ticket is a fine of $200 up to $1,000.

Champley does not believe that registration will help track or control the cat population. The law doesn’t track or control feral cats, one of his department’s biggest concerns.

“There’s a concern this could cause more feral cats,” Champley said. “People could say, ‘I can’t pay for this,’ and release them.”

Vaccinations are done at vet offices. Ogle County Animal Control only handles registration tags, which you need proof of vaccine for.

If your cat got a 1-year vaccination in 2019, you won’t need to register it until your vaccination renewal in 2020. If your cat got a 3-year vaccination, registration will need to be purchased to reflect the current year.

There is no treatment for unvaccinated animals once they’ve been exposed to rabies, and if an animal comes in contact with one suspected of having rabies, the pet must be quarantined for 6 months, at the owner’s considerable expense.

If the owner cannot afford to quar-

antine the animal, the only other option is to euthanize it.

Champley only recalls one case of feline rabies in Ogle County in his 48 years of work.

“It was four or five years ago,” Champley said. “Still, it is a fatal disease.”

The Ogle County Animal Control office is unsure of exactly how many cats in the county will need to be vaccinated and registered.

On Dec. 27, the office was processing around 100 rabies certificates from recent months, most of which came in November. That’s just from a handful of vets.

Graduation honors for degrees are divided into three categories based on final cumulative grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale: summa cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.75-4.0; magna cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.5-3.749; and cum laude indicates a cumulative GPA between 3.25-3.499.

Students who fulfill requirements for a certificate and have a final cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher are awarded a certificate with distinction.

The college held its Fall 2019 Commencement Ceremony for the graduates on Dec. 14 on campus. Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle will be at the First Saturday Community Coffee in Chana on Saturday, Jan. 4 from 9 to 11 a.m.

He will discuss department activities, explain policies of the department and any new laws.

OCSWM suggests waste reduction initiatives in 2020 With 2020 upon us, the Ogle County Solid Waste Management Department (OCSWMD) suggests waste reduction as a possible alternative to trying in vain to exercise more or attempting a fad diet for a couple of weeks.

To trim down the garbage bags or eliminate one of the trash cans per week, consider these waste reduction alternatives so we can all send less to the landfill.

• Cut back on food waste by planning meals accordingly and using left overs in a timely fashion. Certain food scraps can go into a simple backyard compost bin, so items like

fruit and vegetable trimmings, egg shells, coffee grounds and such can be turned into compost instead of becoming garbage.

• Consider donations to local thrift shops or other charitable organizations. Gently used items like clothes, shoes, coats, hats, furniture, toys, bikes, tools, and other household items, can be donated instead of tossed out for the trash.

• Try to avoid single use items such as paper or foam plates, foam cups, plastic utensils, paper napkins, straws, and water bottles. Look for reusable alternatives to these items such as washable dinnerware

and utensils, and always use refillable water bottles and coffee cups.

• When shopping try to use reusable shopping bags. Plastic bags are not recyclable through your normal comingled recycling pick-ups and hinder the recycling process. Certain retail stores have a recycling station so you may recycle your plastic bags.

• If you are fortunate enough to have a curbside recycling service, please use that service accordingly and learn what to put into the bin and what to leave out.

The only items that are truly recyclable include all aluminum and

metal cans, cardboard, clean paper products such as newsprint, magazines, phone books, catalogs, office paper, and junk mail, clean glass bottles and jars, and clean plastic items #1-5 and #7.

Leave out the Styrofoam, plastic bubble wrap, plastic bags, and pizza boxes, as these do not get recycled and have contributed to the diminishing value of recyclable material locally and nationwide.

Oregon has its own social worker, counselor and works with Sinnissippi who does counseling.

“We survey our students with questions like, ‘Do you believe that at least one adult here cares about you?’” Mahoney said.

Oregon has been proactive when it comes to prevention, Mahoney said. He believes that’s the most productive way to prevent violence and feels his view is supported by facts and articles he’s read recently.

School funding is a problem for prevention measures according to Mahoney. Schools are funded at around 70 percent of where they should be and a county-wide sales tax in Ogle County could provide more security and mental health

measures, Mahoney said. Lee County does have a county-wide sales tax.

“The more our kids feel connected,” Mahoney said. “The less they’re going to feel alienated and therefore be at risk.”

Mahoney said he doesn’t believe a discussion has been had by school officials in the county and area on where opinions lie on arming teachers. According to an IASB press release, the resolution was supported primarily by rural school districts with concerns about emergency response time and lack of financial resources to employ school resource officers.

Mahoney has spoken with colleagues at more rural schools in southern Illinois that support teachers with guns due to concerns about law enforcement response times.

Ogle County schools have added resource officers and counseling to prevent school shootings rather than supporting a resolution to arm teachers.

On. Nov. 23, school boards in Illinois voted against a proposed resolution that would call for the Illinois Association of School Boards to support legislation that would allow school districts to set school safety and student protection policies that would allow trained, armed school teachers and staff.

For the second year, a proposal on this topic was not adopted by the IASB Delegate Assembly. The vote tally was 198 in favor of the adoption of the resolution, 249 against.

Oregon School District did not support the idea of teachers being armed.

“We believe that is best served by people who are trained on a regular basis, not just yearly or occasionally,” Superintendent Tom Mahoney said.

Oregon High School does have a School Resource Officer full-time after its school board passed a resolution on Dec. 24, 2018. That decision was prompted by an incident last May at Dixon High School when a student was taken into custody by an SRO after firing shots at a teacher during graduation practice in the gym.

Polo School District Superintendent Christopher Rademacher said his district did not take a stance on the resolution as a board.

“I don’t know that I’d ever want to arm a teacher that didn’t want to be armed,” Rademacher said.

Rademacher’s district does have measures in place like a full-time guidance counselor and a social worker at the middle school. Sinnissippi comes to Polo a couple times a week. Polo has an active safety committee led a former state police officer, as well as electronic locks and cameras.

The district is actively involved with the city’s full-time police force.

Polo has also had at least one teacher in the past who was a former police officer, Rademacher said he could possibly see an individual like that being allowed to carry a gun.

Polo does not have a resource officer at its school. A related resolution, one calling for IASB to advocate for state school safety grants for hiring school resource officers or school security personnel, was adopted and announced on Nov. 23.

“Even with resource officers, you still have shootings,” Rademacher said. “It comes down to understanding kids and knowing their needs.”

Sunday events mark change in spiritual values I

n a testament to how spiritual values have changed, a Sunday conclusion to Harlem’s Dvorak wrestling tournament did not merit much, if any consternation.

It was a 9 a.m. start for the finals of the 30-team competition held in Machesney Park, on a day that has always been set aside for church worship.

Club and AAU sports have long used Sundays as a day for competition, but school districts have generally refrained from it.

In decades past, it would have been scandalous for a school to even consider having competition on a Sunday morning. How dare sports be put above church?

At least that was the prevailing attitude in this country for generations and not just with high school athletics.

There was a time when stores and businesses were closed on Sunday. Besides religious observation, there was a matter of one day a week rest for workers, a Sabbath if you will.

Those so-called Blue Laws have loosened up, but you still can’t buy a car on Sunday in Illinois.

Alcohol sales went from never on Sunday, to noon only and now to anytime of the day.

I can remember my football team making the 1975 playoffs. That was when the first round was played on Wednesday, giving a team limited time to prepare.

An impromptu decision was made by the school to allow us a Sunday evening practice, bearing in mind that it would not interfere with morning church worship.

That was also an era when schools had an unwritten rule not to schedule games on Wednes-

day nights, as that was when churches had youth activities.

The majority of school administrators were churchgoers and perhaps God-fearing ones at that. It would have been unthinking to desecrate God’s day of worship for the sake of high-school athletics As we’ve seen, though, there has been a secular movement to separate church and state. Court cases have ruled against government, and particularly public school districts.

The long-held belief that Sundays were a time for church and rest is slowly dissipating. School administrators, coaches and teachers that influence decision-making are not as responsive to the church as they once were.

Statistics on declining church attendance bear that out, making Sunday just another day to most of America. Maybe that’s why Sunday morning wrestling wasn’t that big of a deal.

Of the 30-team field at Harlem, several of the schools were Catholic, including champion Montini and runner-up Mt. Carmel. Being on the mats instead in the pews must have been okay with them.

This piece isn’t meant to be critical of Harlem High School, but rather a reflection (or lack there-

of) of the influence of church on today’s society.

Truthfully, very few parents put church ahead of athletics. That is borne out by the large number of parents and grandparents, as well, who would much rather travel with their son or daughter to sporting events than church.

I’ve seen a jam-packed parking lot at the Blackhawk Center in my town of Oregon for club volleyball on Sunday morning. What is happening there is no different than anywhere in the country, save deeply religious pockets.

But, for schools to adopt Sunday play makes a much more significant societal statement, effectively giving God second billing.

Prayer left the public school long ago, so why get so wrapped up with a wrestling tournament that was trying to facilitate the schedule as conveniently as possible?

The only answer that comes to mind is that the more God has been edged out, the more schools have experienced anxiety and depression among students, suicide, violence, less student motivation and discipline problems.

What a church can do is show the love of God and that every single person is important to Him. That lessen is far greater than learning algebra or a wrestling takedown.

If God’s love can come into the heart of our young people through the workings of the Church, it stands to reason that the woes of a school would be drastically reduced by such a spiritual transformation.

Shouldn’t that be enough of a reason to set aside just a few hours each week for Him?

Establishing and maintaining sobriety through this program makes Ogle County as better place to live for each of us,� Riley said.

About DUI Courts DUI courts are specialized, comprehensive court programs that provide individual treatment, supervision and accountability for repeat DWI offenders.

These specialty courts follow the well-established drug court model and are based on the premise that impaired driving can be prevented if the underlying causes, such as substance use and mental health disorders, are identified and addressed.

A large body of research supports the effectiveness of DWI courts to lead participants out of the justice system and into long-term sobriety.

Members of the Ogle County New Horizons DUI Court team attended a National Center For DWI (NCDC) Foundational Training in Athens, Georgia.

The team consisted of Judge Clayton Lindsey, Ogle County State’s Attorney Eric Morrow, Ogle County Public Defender Dennis Riley, Polo Police Chief Jon Mandrell, Court Coordinator Brooke Plachno, Probation Officer Stacey Noble and Treatment Provider Kevin Buss of Sinnissippi Centers, Inc. During the 3 ½ day intensive training the team was instructed by NCDC faculty which are nationally recognized experts in the field.

The program was developed and presented by NCDC and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and topics included the DWI treatment continuum, DWI target population, community supervision and alcohol/drug testing, multi-disciplinary team and DWI court phases and requirements.

The team’s training expenses were funded by an Illinois Department of Transportation grant through the University of Illinois - Springfield.

The Ogle County New Horizons DUI Court is the latest addition to the over 10-year history of Problem Solving Courts in Ogle County.

The DUI Court began in October 2018 with the goal of making Ogle County’s roadways safer by subjecting DUI offenders to intensive substances abuse treatment, community supervision and accountability to the Court. “This program assures that multiple DUI offenders are receiving the treatment needed to overcome a powerful addiction under judicial

Oregon Public Library is going fine free in 2020

BY JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@oglecountynews.com Kids trying to rent books at the Oregon Public Library are turned away if they have more than a $5 late fine and can’t pay for it.

That has happened at the library more than Director Hilaree Lombardo would like to see. Because of that and other reasons, the library will be switching to fine-free system on Jan. 1.

“I brought up the conversation with board members and did research,” Lombardo said. “Other libraries are doing it. It doesn’t add to the budget and I think it’s more of a deterrent. It can make people feel ashamed. I don’t want to deter families from coming in.”

Of the 2059 registered cards at Oregon Library, 34 percent currently have fines and 17 percent of those cards cannot check out materials because their fine amount is too high. Lombardo felt that was too big of a percentage of people who aren’t getting free resources that their taxes pay for. Collected fines only make up .25 percent of the library’s

In January 2019, the American Library Association issued a resolution that added to their policies that asserted that imposition of monetary library fines creates a barrier to the provision of library and information services.

The Oregon Public Library Board was said to be all for the change

after Lombardo presented data on the matter. Then she just had to convince her staff.

“It took some convincing with the staff,” Lombardo said. “It’s the way libraries have been forever. We want to include everyone.”

Library materials will still have due dates, but fines will not be accrued when they are overdue.

Renewals can still occur unless there are holds on the materials.

Patrons are still responsible for the items they have checked out and if these materials are kept longer than 14 days past the due date, the patron account will be blocked.

At 21 days the items will be charged to the account at a replacement value. The account will remain blocked until the items are returned. As of Jan. 1, all overdue fines will be waived. Replacement charges for items that are damaged or lost still apply. If you have outstanding library materials you can return them with no fines.

The library has over 65,000 items in circulation, including 18,000 books, 1,400 audiobooks, 1,400 DVDs and 10 hotspots. It also has access to 31,000 ebooks and 12,000 downloadable audio books. During 2018, 29,000 patrons visited the library and 48,000 items were circulated.

“We’re just trying to make sure we’re open and having a less-stressful environment,” Lombardo said.

“I want the library to be open to everyone.”

Lifeline Food & Self Help project takes in record food donations

The Oregon food pantry and clothing resale shop collected about 5,000 pounds from the Boy Scouts and

Cub Scouts holiday food drive on Dec. 14.

The organization usually takes in about 2,000 pounds, co-president Sharon Wallace said.

“We were very surprised; we’ve never had one that big before,” Wallace said. “We’re very grateful.”

The nonprofit food pantry and

shop, on the first floor of Conover Square at 201 N. Third St. in Oregon, is funded through donations and manned by volunteers. The group was founded 37 years ago and has expanded several times.

“We want to thank the community for their support,” she said. “It really does help us.”

Hours are 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday for food and clothing; 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday for clothing only; 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday for food and clothing, and 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Dec. 23 Amanda Anderson, 34, of Rock Falls, was arrested at 7:42 p.m. for driving while license suspended following a traffic stop on Interstate 88 near mile marker 77 1/2.

Franklin Attaway, 55, of Oregon, was arrested at 2:23 p.m. for driving while license revoked following a traffic stop in the 7000 block of North Illinois 2.

Attaway was transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond

Dec. 24 Michael Stenli, 50, of Freeport, was arrested for no valid driver’s license.

Deputies responded to a single vehicle accident near the intersection of Baileyville Road and Montague Road. After further investigation Stenli was placed under arrest. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Forreston EMS. The accident remains under investigation.

Ryan Wakenight, 33, of Polo, was arrested at 8:30 a.m. for driving while under the influence of alcohol following a traffic stop just into Lee County on Lost Nation Road.

Wakenight was additionally issued citations for speeding, a loud excessive noise coming from the vehicle’s exhaust, and improper display of a license plate.

He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and released on an I-Bond.

Dec. 26 Dennis S. Vineyard, 47, of Davis Junction was arrested at 8:40 a.m. for domestic battery after deputies were dispatched to Primrose Lane in Davis Junction. He was transported to the Ogle County Jail and held in lieu of bond.

Lonita Stokes, 30, of Chicago, was arrested for an outstanding Ogle County

warrant for driving while license suspended. Stokes posted a $2,000 10 percent bond, and was released from the Ogle County Jail. Stokes is scheduled to return to court on Jan. 17.

Dec. 27 At 12:02 p.m., deputies responded to a two-vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Mt. Morris Road and Illinois 72, west of Leaf River.

A passenger in Portner’s vehicle, Jennifer A. Winquist, 39, of Rockford, was also issued civil citations for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brookelynn M. Larson, 20, of Oregon, was issued civil citations at 8:16 p.m. for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of cannabis not more than 10 grams. These violations occurred at the intersection of Monroe and Mix Streets.

Dec. 21 Evan M. McNeely, 20, of Loves Park, was arrested at 12:59 a.m. for driving while license suspended. McNeely was also issued citations for failure to dim headlights, operating a vehicle with an expired registration, operating an uninsured vehicle, and a civil citation for possession of cannabis less than 10 grams was also issued. McNeely was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

These violations occurred in the 300 block of N. 4th Street.

Jordan J. Heintzelman, 24, of Dixon,

was issued a citation at 10:48 p.m. for operating an uninsured motor vehicle.

This violation occurred in the 400 block of S. 4th Street.

One parking citation and 15 verbal/ written warnings were issued from Dec. 16-22.

Dec. 17 At 11:19 p.m., Oregon Police responded to a disturbance call in the 400 block of N. 6th Street resulting in the arrest of Damian L. Nowicki, 19, of Oregon, for illegal consumption of alcohol as a minor and criminal damage to property.

Nowicki was transported to the Ogle County Jail.

At 7:40 a.m., Oregon Police investigated a two-vehicle traffic crash in the 300 block of Mix Street involving a 2013 Chrysler driven by Isaac C. Simpson, 16, of Oregon, and a 2014 Honda driven by Virginia A. Pearson, 70, of Oregon. Simpson was issued a citation for improper lane usage.

Heather failed to stop at the stop sign and struck a Kia SUV that was traveling eastbound on Illinois 72.

Heather’s vehicle came to rest in the intersection, facing north. The Kia SUV was pushed into the south ditch upon impact, overturned, and came to rest in the ditch on its side, facing east.

Heather was extricated from the vehicle and transported by Mt. Morris Ambulance to Mercy Health’s Javon Bea Hospital Riverside in Rockford for treatment of serious injuries.

The Kia was driven by Jason Viverito, 42, of Davis Junction. Passengers in the Kia were: Steve Klassen, 62, of Davis Junction; Dawn Klassen, 58, of Davis Junction; Curtis Sherman, 63, of Loves Park; and a 5 year old female juvenile from Davis Junction.

All occupants of the Kia were transported to Swedish American Hospital in Rockford for treatment of serious injuries by EMS from Byron, Leaf River, and Forreston.

The accident remains under investigation. Their conditions were unavailable Sunday.

Kode Hall, 26, of Forreston, was arrested at 6:07 a.m. for domestic

battery and an outstanding Lee County warrant after deputies responded to a domestic disturbance at 407 N. Chestnut Lot 27 in Forreston. Hall was arrested and transported to the Ogle County Jail where was held in lieu of bond.

Dec. 30 Erich Huber, 38, of Stillman Valley, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. Huber had a bond of $470.

Huber did post the $470 bond and was released from the Ogle County Jail.

Dec. 29 Ronald Reittinger, 36, of Leaf River, was arrested at 3:26 a.m. for aggravated domestic battery after deputies responded to an address in the 500 block of Garfield Street in Leaf River in reference to a disturbance. Reittinger was placed under arrest and transported to the Ogle County Jail where he was held in lieu of bond.

Regina Tamayo, 52, of Oregon, was arrested on a warrant for failure to appear. Tamayo was scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 30.

Seth J. Rudecki, 18, of Rockford, was arrested at 10 a.m. on an outstanding Ogle County Juvenile Detention warrant after deputies initiated a traffic stop at Illinois 2 and Townline Road. Rudecki was arrested after a short investigation.
