Medical marijuana still a priority

Ottawa dispensary will serve both medical, recreational consumers

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media OTTAWA — Ottawa resident Carla Hortega remembers what life was like prior to using medically prescribed marijuana.

With the pain from fibromyalgia, she couldn’t get out of bed.

The pain medications she was taking weren’t helping. They made her feel more and more like a zombie.

“I’d take a broom and bang it on the wall when I needed someone to bring me something from bed, that’s how bad it got,” Hortega said.

“After I started using marijuana, it changed my life for the better.”

Crediting the daily doses for suppressing her pain and improving her mood, she has since earned a degree in complementary and alternative health.

On Jan. 1, recreational marijuana will be legal in Illinois.

Long lines are expected outside marijuana dispensaries, including the Verilife dispensary in Ottawa, as demand is expected to grow from 80,000 medical marijuana patients in Illinois to about 750,000 recreational consumers.

The Ottawa store has served medical marijuana patients, such as Hortega, since it opened in November 2015. The state has given the store the go-ahead at the first of the year to sell recreational marijuana as well.

Cannabis patient advocate and wellness specialist Kalee Hooghkirk, of Full Spektrum Services, is worried dispensaries will run out of products needed to treat medical conditions from the increased demand of new recreational users.

“Already in the last two months, we’ve seen shortages across the state,” she said as dispensaries prepare for recreational use.

Medical marijuana differs from recreational use in many ways, specifically because it is tailored to an individual.

Hortega said there are different strains of marijuana — ones designed for daytime or evening uses — as well as options, such as edibles and creams, to go along with smoking materials.

“There’s a lot to choose from, and patients know what works best for them,” Hortega said. “There’s a lit-

While Verilife sent an email to medical marijuana patients saying they can avoid lines by traveling 90 minutes to its Arlington Heights dispensary, which is only allowed to sell medical marijuana, Verilife officials do not expect patients to have any issues in Ottawa.

A Verilife spokesman said the state statute is clear. Both cultivators and dispensaries must prioritize medical patients by ensuring the same array and quantity of marijuana products available before Jan. 1.

“We anticipate ensuring a smooth purchasing process for patients — no lines, no taxes and no shortages,” said Jeremy Unruh, of Verilife. “Our program was premised on bringing relief to those Illinois patients who need it most, and for whom traditional medicine isn’t working as anticipated. The adult use law may have expanded accessibility, but it didn’t cure cancer or abolish epilepsy. Our first responsibility will always be to our medical patients. That, you can take to the bank.”

The state also enacted standards saying dispensaries can only sell recreational marijuana bought after Dec. 1.

Hooghkirk said she wishes the state would have delayed the start of recreational sales to avoid any adverse effects on patients.

“If dispensaries are basing the benchmark on the supply from August through December, that could be problematic, because it’s already gotten harder for patients

to get what they need,” said Hooghkirk, who is questioning why shortages are happening before recreational sales begin.

Though she’s critical of the explanation, cannabis organizations have said allowing medical marijuana to be prescribed as an opioid alternative has caused more patients than expected, taxing supplies.

Still, Hooghkirk said she wants to teach patients to grow their own marijuana plants. Under state law, patients are allowed to grow up to five plants.

Hortega said she would like to learn.

“I know a lot of patients are considering growing their own, especially if there are any issues at dispensaries,” she said.

Hortega is hopeful recreational legalization will make marijuana more accessible to those who don’t qualify for prescriptions but may benefit from its effects.

“There are a lot of conditions not on the official list to qualify for a prescription,” Hortega said.

Hooghkirk said it’s important to remember the experience of buying recreational marijuana will be quite different than going into a dispensary with a prescription.

“It will be more like a liquor store transaction than going to a pharmacist,” Hooghkirk said.

Similar to Hortega, Amy Adams Peterson, of Ottawa, and JoAnn Fitzgerald, of Marseilles, both improved their quality of life by using prescribed marijuana.

Peterson uses marijuana to treat endometriosis and fibromyalgia.

She said using marijuana as an oil limits the psychoactive effects she felt taking other prescription painkillers.

“Every day is different and with marijuana, you have the ability to treat yourself accordingly,” Peterson said. “It took me six months to a year to nail down how to medicate myself, but now I have it down to a science.”

Fitzgerald uses marijuana to treat the volume of pain she has from autoimmune diseases.

All three of them agree legalizing marijuana for recreational use can be a positive step toward crushing the stigma that goes with marijuana use.

“I think it will make people more educated and informed about marijuana, and how it can help people avoid addiction, or help with epilepsy or seizures,” Peterson said.

Fitzgerald said, “I think it’s another step toward legalization everywhere.”

Science, technology, engineering, math inspire their minds

BY ALI BRABOY Shaw Media The girls’ laughter and excitement filled the room as they drew out their ideas on the tables.

They were envisioning how their catapults should look and how they would transport the little Lego people from one side of the room to the other.

The Tonica Girl Scouts, ages 9-11, brainstormed with one another how to use the Popsicle sticks, rubber bands and plastic spoons to their advantage.

Nicole Fundell grew up as a Girl Scout, and she remembers camping and going to summer camp. But she doesn’t remember anything in regard to learning about robots.

“This was not anywhere around when I was growing up,” said Fundell, troop leader for the girls.

It was the second time the girls came to learn about science, technology, engineering and math, also commonly referred to as STEM. “This is to get young girls involved in STEM activities,” said LaSalle-­ Peru Township High School teacher Andrew Wiercinski.

Girl Scouts has pledged to add 2.5 million girls to the STEM pipeline by 2025, the group’s website says.

The youth organization says that in 2015, women filled 47 percent of all U.S. jobs, but held only 28 percent of STEM jobs.

The organization goes on to say that the U.S. is facing a STEM workforce crisis, and in the next 10 years, the workforce will need 1 million new STEM professionals.

Last week, the girls designed their own catapults so they could launch little Lego people.

The week before that, the girls designed the robots, drew their designs on the tables (they are dry-erase-like tables, which the girls loved). L-P high schoolers helped the girls build the robots, use a coding program to code the robots, which then allowed the robots to move. Toward the end of the class, the girls raced their robots against one another.

This is the first time Wiercinski has offered a program like this for the young girls, but he hopes they can continue it for years to come.

“That’s exciting for me as a teacher that we’re already inspiring them at that age,” Wiercinski said.

Troop leader Fundell is a forensic scientist and thinks it’s important the girls see careers in STEM fields.

When she was dropping off the girls to go home, at least one mentioned that she wants to enroll in the class when she comes to L-P. “That’s what I wanted to hear,” Fundell said.

She hopes this is the start of a partnership between the Girl Scouts and L-P, and as the girls age, they will be able to get involved with more advanced activities.

BY CRAIG STERRETT Shaw Media Two drivers were injured and transported to St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley, on request, after a two-vehicle accident on the south side of Lostant on Route 251 on Dec. 20.

Around 7 p.m., a pickup and car were involved in a

collision when one driver pulled out of Dave’s Lost Ant, attempted a left turn (south) and was struck by a northbound vehicle.

Lostant fire chief Andy Forrest said firefighters did not have to perform extrication work to free the drivers from the vehicles, but they did need to deal with gasoline leaking from one of the vehicles.

LaSalle County Sheriff ’s Office also responded.

ILLINOIS STATE POLICE Two-vehicle accident LaSalle County deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at 6:30 a.m. Dec. 11 at East 950th Road and North 17th Road (Richland Township). Jarrett Roehrig, 30, of Lostant was traveling eastbound on North 17th Road and attempted to stop at the intersection with East

950th Road when his vehicle started to slide due to road conditions.

Roehrig’s vehicle slid through the intersection and was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Justin Burns, 31, of Streator. No injuries were reported. No citations were issued.

Streator and Ottawa police made three arrests recently on cocaine charges after the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team conducted a multi-month investigation into crack cocaine sales in Streator.

Dwayne Daniels, 32, of Chicago was arrested Dec. 18 by Streator police on a warrant for five counts of unlawful delivery of cocaine. Sandy A. Gullens of Streator also was arrested on two counts of unlawful delivery.

Ottawa police arrested Darrylena L. Merritte, 35, of Streator on Dec. 19 on a warrant for four counts of unlawful delivery of cocaine.

Police said during the investigation, all three individuals delivered crack cocaine to Tri-DENT agents on several occasions.

The arrest warrants were obtained with the assistance of the LaSalle County State Attorney’s Office. Daniels and Gullens are being held at the LaSalle County Jail on a $1 million bond each; Merritte is being held on a $500,000 bond.

Unlawful delivery of a controlled substance is a Class 2 felony, which is punishable by three to seven years in prison and/or fines up to $25,000.

Genaro Neumann named SRRC’s 2020 ambassador

OTTAWA — Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy & Child Development announces the 2020 ambassador is Genaro Jacob Amani Neumann.

Genaro’s story began in May of 2016, when his then foster parents, Stephannie and Jacob Neumann, brought him home from the hospital at 5 days old. Genaro was welcomed home by a doting older sister, Ambrianna. Eventually, Genaro’s sister, Christina, joined the Neumann family, and on May 7, 2019, Genaro and Christina were officially adopted.

Currently, Genaro, Ambrianna and Christina are part of a supportive blended family.

They spend their time with their mom and her partner, Andrew Jagielo, and their dad and his partner, Kyndra Tower. All four are actively involved in nurturing and enriching the children’s lives.

When Genaro was about 15 months old, Stephannie and Jacob expressed concern to Genaro’s pediatrician as Genaro was not talking or walking. The pediatrician referred Genaro for early intervention services with Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy & Child Development (SRRC).

Through the course of his speech therapy, Genaro was diagnosed with Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS). Childhood Apraxia of Speech is a neurological disorder in which the child’s brain has difficulty communicating messages to the lips, jaw or tongue in order to produce the sounds required for speech. A child with Apraxia often knows what they want to say, and believes they are speaking clearly, however it is

difficult for others to understand.

“When Genaro’s speech therapist, Sarah Baker, told us that she believed Genaro had CAS, we were scared about what that meant for his development and his quality of life. Sarah was able to reassure us that people with Apraxia could lead normal lives,” said Stephannie.

“Sarah was really supportive and offered us ideas for how we could reinforce what Genaro was learning in speech at home. We are so thankful for Sarah, Genaro’s teachers and everyone at SRRC for working with us to help Genaro be successful!” Sarah and Stephannie worked together to teach Genaro a multitude of signs, which allow him to communicate in his daily life while he works to develop his spoken language skills.

Genaro, Ambrianna and Christina all attend SRRC’s child care center, allowing Genaro to receive speech therapy services on-site with SRRC therapist Sarah Baker up until recently when he turned 3 years old. He is currently attending Lincoln School’s Developmental Preschool in addition to Starved Rock Regional Center, where he continues to thrive in his language development.

Genaro’s teachers, Ms. Kim and Ms. Lauren, continue to work with him daily to achieve his goals. In fact, Ms. Kim is a developmental therapist and has decades of experience working with children with special needs.

Children who are receiving therapy services who are also attending the child care center have a definite advantage due to the collaboration of teachers and therapy staff. The structure of the

Based on the play “My Sister Eileen,” this hidden gem features a soaring score composed by Leonard Bernstein (“West Side Story,” “Candide,” “On the Town”) and smart, funny lyrics that were written by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (“On the Town,” “Bells Are Ringing,” “Singin’ In the Rain” — screenplay).

Set in Greenwich Village in the summer of 1935, “Wonderful Town” tells the story of Ruth and Eileen, two sisters who leave behind their mundane lives in Ohio in pursuit of their dreams.

Chock-full of swinging show tunes, breathtaking choreography, and effervescent charm, “Wonder-

ful Town” captures the thrill of chasing one’s dreams like no other musical.

Auditions will be at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, and 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30, at St. John XXIII Community Center, 1301 Second St. in Henry.

Auditions are open for all roles and will consist of a vocal audition, dance/stage movement, and readings from the script. Auditioners should prepare a song (theatrical preferred) they believe showcases their vocal talent and wear comfortable clothing and sensible shoes that will allow freedom of movement.

Production dates are March 7-8 and 13-15.
