Building permit OK’d for Dollar General store

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — The Tonica Village Board is looking to welcome a new Dollar General store to town.

The village board, led by Bob Anderson in the absence of Village President Kevin Sluder, approved the project’s building permit this past Monday, adding the addition to its slate of upcoming developments.

Dollar General’s building permit approval comes at a time when changes to the proposed Casey’s

Metal detector group members look for, find hidden items

If you’re seeking the gift for the person who wants to find everything, consider a metal detector.

“I’d have to compare metal detecting to finding a $20 in your pocket when you do laundry,” said Kevin Barkley, of Dalzell. “It’s about the same thing. You never know what you’re going to find until you try to look for it.”

Barkley is a charter member of the Illinois Valley Historical Research and Recovery Association, which now has more than 100 members.

The club meets monthly and, when possible, holds a club hunt twice a month.

“It’s a whole world of opportunity,” said Barkley, who has been doing metal detecting for close to 30 years.

Besides old metal toys, tags, tokens and buttons, there have been plenty of coins, some dating back more than a century.

Barkley said he annually recovers about 2,000 coins. Typically each year, about 70 of them are silver, but this year the number of silver coins has topped 100.

A good metal detector is the key piece of equipment. They can cost from $200 to $800 depending on their features and sensitivity to different kinds of metal.

“Discrimination is the key to all these machines,” Barkley said.

Older models require tuning, but the latest models with sophisticated microprocessor are “turn on and go,” he said.

Barkley cautions against buying bargain metal detectors.

“A $50 metal detector will frustrate you beyond belief,” Barkley said. “You will dig everything — and probably still not come with anything good. Anybody interested in buying a detector should do some homework before they buy it.”

Finding a good place to explore is the other important element of metal treasure hunting.

Typically, Barkley said, when a property owner is asked, they likely will give permission for their grounds to be hunted, although some will not.

Public parks are another source of buried treasures, although local laws should be checked to make sure they can be explored.

“Starved Rock State Park is 100 percent off limits,” he cautioned.

One of Barkley’s personal favorite places to hunt is an old private picnic grove. It doesn’t matter that he goes every year. Weather conditions will change the positions of metal items underground. Additionally, upgraded equipment also may detect items missed in past years.

Some of what club members do is public service work. They may help find metal pins that establish land boundaries. Others will assist in locating a lost ring or keys dropped in a snowbank.

Barkley has found two class rings, one of which he was able to return to a graduate of St. Bede Academy, which is near his home.

A favorite find of Barkley’s was an

old copper bell missing its clapper he found on a farm near Granville.

He brought it to the farm owner, an elderly wheelchair-bound lady.

“She almost broke into tears,” B a rk l e y re c a l l e d . “ S h e s a i d , ‘That’s the bell my mom used to ring when it was time for us to

come in to eat.’ “ The woman insisted Barkley keep the bell, but he refused. When she passed, a note was discovered on top of the bell instructing for it be given to him after she died.

“It is a very special piece in my collection,” Barkley said.

TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

GRANVILLE — Carl Sauter, 77, of Granville passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018, at Manor Court in Peru.

He was born May 4, 1941, in Prophetstown to Leo and Mabel (Engelhaupt) Sauter. He married Carol Walgenbach June 15, 1963. She preceded him in death on Feb. 6, 2017.

He graduated from Tonica High School. He loved farming. He started farming at a young age and later farmed with his two sons, Dave and Jim. He had a passion for Oliver tractors, and enjoyed collecting and restoring antique Olivers.

He started tractor pulling in the early 1960s and was later joined by Dave and Jim. Later his grandson, Michael, joined the pulling team and still pulls today. He was a member of the Illini State Pullers and Sacred Heart Church.

Surviving is one son, Jim (Ginny Farneti) Sauter of Oglesby; one daughter-inlaw, Noelle Sauter of Oglesby; one sister, Pat Senica of Utica; and one grandson, Michael (Hannah) Sauter of Tonica.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and a son, David.

Services were held Monday, Dec. 17, at the Dysart-Cofoid Funeral Chapel in Granville with Father Paul Meismer officiating.

Burial was in the Fairview Cemetery in Tonica.

Visitation was held Sunday, Dec. 16, at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were Mike Sauter, Luke Holly, Mike Passini, Dale Senica, Eric Dauber and Mike Sadnick.

Contributions may be made to donor’s choice.

Activity report for November During November, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) responded to 16 emergency calls, with the year-to-date total being 164.

The calls were two mutual aid fire calls, one to LaSalle and the other Utica; four accident calls; eight ambulance requests; one carbon monoxide alarm and one downed power line.

During November, members participated in the following training: • A simulated disaster situation utilizing incident command structure and sector logistics to house and feed 100 people.

• Annual driver road training and a review of the standard operating guidelines for drivers.

• Officer lead squad training covered command and control, leadership, communications and organizational skills used for the review and operation of apparatus and equipment, verifying the operational readiness of personnel and equipment.

Committee learns that IVCC financial audit is ‘clean’ OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Board’s Audit-Finance Committee learned Dec. 6 that the college had received another “clean” audit of its financial statements.

After reviewing IVCC’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the year ending June 30, Wipfli LLP auditors Sara McKenna and Matthew Schueler noted IVCC earned an unmodified report with no weaknesses or deficiencies.

A Command and Line Officers meeting was held, and they reviewed the recent Insurance Services Office (ISO) audit procedures and preliminary results, and developed a future training plan.

The department discussed the marking of fire hydrants in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards and will purchase hydrant markers for those having a fire flow of more than 1,000 gallons per minute. The department will work with village officials on this project.

Firefighters also studied the comparison of room contents during fires involving modern day furnishings versus legacy furnishings. The comparison demonstrated how much faster modern furnishings burn than legacy items. With faster burn times, the need for early detection, such as smoke detectors and exit plans, are a must to help save lives.

Additional training included building construction and safety awareness and the dump and refill operations on tender 1716.

April 27 The trial of Clifford Andersen is set for July 9 in Putnam County Court.

Andersen, of Standard, is suspected of killing his sister-in-law, Deborah Dewey, of Ladd. The suspect could face up to 65 prosecution witnesses in the case that stretches across the Illinois Valley.

Illinois and Virginia were even at the end of competition. Illinois was named the national champion based on its higher reasons score.

In addition to the team championship, Illinois 4-H member Mason Engnell of McDonough County was named the overall individual winner of the contest held Nov. 13 in Louisville, Ky. Other members of the team include Clay Sundberg of LaSalle County, Jenna Wheeler of Morgan County, Nicole Haverback of Henry County and Jake Bohnsack of Rock Island County. University of Illinois graduate student Gracia Ramp coached the team to victory.

In addition to their third-place finish in the reasons division, the team placed second in swine, third in beef cattle, and seventh in sheep.

Team members took top individual honors, also, said Dan Jennings, University of Illinois Extension 4-H animal science educator. Engnell earned his overall championship by placing second in cattle, third in reasons, fourth in swine and seventh in sheep. Sundberg finished

LaSalle County 4-H has announced North Stars 4-H Club member Clay Sundberg, along with his fellow teammates, has secured the win for Illinois in the 4-H Livestock Judging National Championship.

Sundberg shared his experience, stating “Having the opportunity to be a part of the Illinois State 4-H Livestock Judging Team has been an honor. I enjoyed getting to know the other members of the team (Jenna, Nicole, Mason and Jake), along with our coach, Gracia. Getting to travel to Scotland with them is very exciting. I would like to thank my local 4-H livestock judging coaches, Sharon Reel and Scott Freebairn, for pushing me over the years to do my best along with the support that has been provided by the LaSalle County Extension Service, LaSalle County Stockman’s Association and LaSalle County Cattleman Association that has allowed local teams to attend contests.”
