Deer and Chili Night The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department’s annual Deer and Chili Night fundraiser likely set some sort of record this year with 140 people served and the large amount of deer local hunters entered after a successful day of hunting. Twelve deer were brought to the department the evening of Saturday, Nov. 17, enough to make it noteworthy, but 11 of those deer were bucks. And of those 11, the majority were in possession of impressive antlers.

Postal Service releases its shipping deadlines for the holidays SHAW MEDIA The U.S. Postal Service has released deadlines for the holiday season, including the Dec. 20 deadline for first-class and priority mail, and Dec. 22 for priority express mail.

The dates are estimates for delivery before Dec. 25, but actual delivery still varies on several conditions.

The post office’s busiest time is two weeks before Christmas.

Beginning the week of Dec. 10, customer traffic is expected to increase, and the postal service expects to deliver nearly 200 million packages per week during these two weeks.

The week of Dec. 17-23 is predicted to be the busiest mailing, shipping and delivery week. During this week alone, the postal service expects to process and deliver nearly 3 billion pieces of first-class mail, including greeting cards.

Packages can be shipped online at usps.com. With the Click-N-Ship feature, consumers can order free priority mail boxes, print shipping labels, buy postage and request next-day package pickup. The postal service anticipates Monday, Dec. 17, to be the busiest day online. Nearly 105 million people are predicted to visit the USPS website between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.

Turkey is a healthy food that need not be reserved strictly for holiday meals. And with proper planning, leftovers from those holiday meals can provide tasty and nutritious entrees.

1 Tbsp. oil 1/4 cup of chopped onion 1 cup of celery 4 cups of cooked turkey 2 cans (15.5 oz.) of great northern beans, drained 2 cans (11 oz.) of corn, undrained 1 can (4 oz.) of chopped green chiles 4 cups of turkey broth 1 Tsp. of ground cumin In a soup pot, heat oil and saute the onion. Add all remaining ingredients and heat to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes.

“Keeping food safety in mind is as important as the meal when serving your friends and families. The elderly, young children and pregnant women are most at risk for foodborne illness,” Glassman said.

Always follow the two-hour rule, the guideline for holding food in the

temperature danger zone of 40-140 degrees. Plan for your serving time within this time frame, and for leftover storage, the general rule is three to four days, except stuffing and gravy, which is one to two days.

When reheating, make sure the food reaches 165 degrees and the temperature should be taken from the middle of the dish, not the edges.

“Be sure to label with date and food item and for freezing, use freezer-approved storage methods and have enough containers to store food separately and in the small shallow containers needed for proper cooling,” she said.

Pritzker announces transition committee focused on veterans

Gov.-elect Juliana Stratton announced the formation of the Serving Illinois’ Heroes Committee to focus on veterans’ issues during a press conference at Waubonsee Community College’s downtown Aurora campus last week.

The committee, comprised of 19

veterans, is the second of several working groups to be announced by the Pritzker administration that feature experts in a variety of subjects — in this case, veterans’ affairs — intended to advise and guide the incoming administration.

Pritzker told reporters he believes it is “our obligation, it’s our duty” to stand up for veterans in the United States.

“We want to make sure that we’re

doing the right thing for our veterans, and I know that together we will,” Pritzker said. “We have a real commitment in the state of Illinois to live up to, and as governor, I’m going to make sure that happens.”

“As chair of the transition, my top priority is making sure that our administration is responsive and ready to be responsive to the needs of every Illinoisan,” Stratton said.

“Today we are observing veterans,

and honoring our veterans ... and what better way to honor the men and women who served our country than to be ready to serve them on day one of our administration?”

Officials discussed some of the topics expected to be addressed by the committee during the press conference.

The committee will be chaired by U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, Secretary of State Jesse White and retiring state Rep. David Harris, R-Mount Prospect.

PRINCETON — The food has been cooked and the table cleared, but what to do with the abundance of leftovers is an annual Thanksgiving challenge.

Susan Glassman, a nutrition and wellness educator with the U of I Extension, has several options to help families make the most of their holiday leftovers.

“Leftovers are the best part of the meal. Thanksgiving is about food and family, but before you enjoy the delicious aromas coming from your kitchen, remember, planning for leftovers starts before the meal, so make room in the refrigerator and freezer, and invest in proper containers,” she said.

While there’s certainly nothing wrong with repeating the Thanksgiving dinner on Friday, family members may tire of it if the leftovers stretch through the weekend.

With this in mind, Glassman provided several ways to creatively turn them into something new.

The makings of a traditional dinner can easily be adapted into a variety of soups, stews, wraps, chili, pasta dishes, broths, sandwiches, casseroles, pot pies, salads and more.

“I look forward to leftovers and enjoy making traditional soups and casseroles with turkey, and more recently, turkey paninis with cranberry relish and stuffing are a favorite,” Glassman said.

lack Friday will be here in a few days. It will be crazy.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is the beginning of the holiday shopping season. It’s when people get up early, sit in traffic, hunt for a place to park, fight the crowds, and stand in line to buy “doorbusters” that no one in the family may want or use.

That’s why I like Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday, the next day, is when people go out to support the independent shops and restaurants that support their communities throughout the year.

Small business accounts for 99.6 percent of Illinois’ employers, and they employ 45.5 percent of the state’s private sector workforce.

by Wall Street investors, the independent shops and restaurants taking part in Small Business Saturday are owned by and employ our friends and neighbors. They’re the same businesses that support our schools and sports teams and charities throughout the year.

NFIB, the nation’s leading small business advocacy organization, points out that shopping small is a lot different than shopping big.

Instead of dealing with harried part-timers hired to help out at the big-box stories over the holidays, you stand a good chance of dealing directly with the owner of the business on Small Business Saturday.

You’ll be served by someone who actually cares whether you find the thing you’re looking for and wants you to come back all year long.

Small Business Saturday began in 2010 as a marketing campaign launched by American Express to promote small businesses, but as state director of NFIB in Illinois, I know Small Business Saturday isn’t a gimmick.

NFIB believes that Small Business Saturday is a good reminder to #ShopSmall and support the local businesses that keep our communities strong. It’s also a great way to save money on unique gifts and gift cards to unique businesses your friends and family won’t find at the mall or online.

According to a survey by NFIB and American Express, 108 million shoppers spent $12.9 billion at independently owned businesses on last year’s Small Business Saturday.

The survey said 43 percent of U.S. adults shopped or ate small on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Most of those people said they shopped or ate at more than one independent business.

You wouldn’t think something as modest as Small Business Saturday would have such a major impact,

but it does. When you shop local and shop small, you’re supporting your friends and neighbors. You’re supporting your community. When you shop at a chain store, most of the money goes to some corporate office somewhere, but when you shop on Main Street, most of that money stays on Main Street.

This year, make a difference in your community: Shop local on Small Business Saturday.

Speaker Madigan off-base in his analysis of election results Rauner and GOP losses don’t mean speaker is a success

M

ike Madigan is a man in love. The usually stoic Illinois speaker of the House is smitten. And last week, he didn’t even try to hide who he holds dear.

The object of his affections?

Why, it is himself, of course.

I’ve never encountered a news release quite so full of self-adulation and gloating as the one Madigan issued through the Democratic Party of Illinois, which he leads: “Last night’s election results definitively proved that the [Bruce] Rauner Republican playbook of attempting to make the entire 2018 election a referendum on Speaker Madigan, to distract from Republicans’ record, is a failure. Rauner and the Republican

COMMENTARY Scott Reeder Party spent several years and hundreds of millions of dollars focused on tearing down one man, and last night that strategy definitively failed for Republicans up and down the ballot who joined in the effort.”

OK, it’s a little weird that he talks about himself in the third person.

But all the same, we get the message: He’s sticking it in the eye of his arch nemesis, Gov. Bruce Rauner, who was defeated last week.

And, yes, Bruce Rauner is a failure.

But just because your foe fails, doesn’t mean you’re a success.

Mike Madigan’s news release was the equivalent of him running on the street and hollering: “People really like me.”

Look, Illinois Republicans had a rough election.

The reasons are many, but here are a few: a GOP president unpopular in the Chicago suburbs, a Republican Party unable to unite after a bruising gubernatorial primary, an unpopular governor at the top of the ballot and getting outspent 3 to 1 by J.B. “Big Bucks” Pritzker.

None of these things equates to Mike Madigan being popular.

In fact, last year, a poll conducted

by Southern Illinois University’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute found that 61 percent of Illinoisans disapprove of Mike Madigan and 58 percent disapproved of Bruce Rauner.

Voters rendered a judgment Nov. 6 that had “damned if you do” edging out “damned if you don’t.”

But Madigan said this of Rauner’s efforts: “It failed because Speaker Madigan and the Democratic Party of Illinois are champions of smart

economic and social policies that better the lives of Illinoisans and create a state that works for all of us.”

Huh? Illinois has the worst credit rating in the nation, and has an unfunded pension liability of $250 billion, according to Moody’s. The state is on the brink of insolvency.

Over the past 40 years, both Republicans and Democrats have contributed to this fiscal mess. But the common denominator during those four decades is Mike Madigan.

His fingerprints are on nearly every vote that has contributed to Illinois’ fiscal death spiral.

To say Mike Madigan has exhibited “smart economic policies” is silly.

For Madigan to claim such is an exercise in self-delusion.

Trustees give OK to tentative $12.2M tax levy It’s an increase of 4.85 percent vs. last year’s levy OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College trustees have approved a tentative $12.2 million tax levy request for 2018, up less than 5 percent over the actual 2017 levy extension of $11.7 million.

“The estimated tax rate is .3647, the same as the 2017 rate,” Cheryl Roelfsema, IVCC vice president for Business Services and Finance, said at the Nov. 8 board of trustees meeting.

The estimated equalized assessed valuation (EAV) of $3.3 billion is 4.99 percent over 2017. IVCC’s 4.85 percent levy increase will not require a public notice or public hearing when trustees move for final approval on Dec. 13.

At 2:55 a.m. on Nov. 18, the department was called to a one-vehicle accident near the address of 1917 E. 8th Road.

In both cases, emergency personnel found a vehicle on its wheels, off the road and with the airbag deployed.

Each vehicle had one occupant, with no extraction needed. They were evaluated by medical personnel and refused transport to a hospital.

Rollover accident At 11 a.m. on Nov. 15, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department was called for a one-vehicle rollover accident on East 8th Road near North 18th Road.

Tonica responded with an ambulance, pumper and rescue truck and emergency personnel found a vehicle, on its wheels, in a field. There was one occupant, and no extraction was needed. After being evaluated by medical personnel, he refused transport to a hospital. The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office investigated the accident.

Vehicle goes into ditch At 11 a.m. on Nov. 15, deputies investigated a single-vehicle accident at East 8th Road and North 1850th Road in Richland Township. Peter Le, 46, of LaSalle was southbound on East 8th Road when he lost control of his vehicle and entered the ditch because of the weather conditions. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued.

The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

IVCC will host fall ag open house OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its Fall Ag Open House for all prospective students and parents on Thursday, Nov. 29, in Rooms CTC124-125. Session 1 is from noon to 2 p.m. and session 2 is from 6 to 8 p.m.

Guests will interact with current IVCC students and faculty, learn about the program and tour campus. Enrollment, financial aid and scholarship information will also be provided.

Representatives from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Illinois State University, Southern Illinois University and Western Illinois University ag programs will meet with prospective students and discuss transfer opportunities.

“Ag is more than just farming and we’re excited to share what we have to offer at IVCC with prospective students and their parents,” said instructor Willard Mott.
