Advisory council offers area students valuable insight into public policy MORRIS — Dozens of high school students from across the 38th Senate District participated in a unique, hands-on experience in public policy, state government, and leadership as members of state Sen. Sue Rezin’s Youth Advisory Council on Oct. 10.

“The enthusiasm, knowledge, and engagement from the students on my Youth Advisory Council is incredibly refreshing,” Rezin said. “We’ll need positive, uplifting, and bright leaders, whether it’s in government, public policy, the classroom, everywhere. The students of this generation are our future leaders, and I can tell you the future looks bright after spending the day with these students. I hope my Youth Advisory Council taught them more about government and leadership, and reinforces their drive to achieve their dreams.”

Rezin hosted the all-day event with students who’d been selected by their principals and teachers. Youth attended from Coal City High School, Gardner-South Wilmington High School, LaSalle-Peru Township High School, Morris Community High School, Newark Community High School, Ottawa Township High School, Putnam County High School, Seneca Township High School, Serena High School, and Wilmington High School.

They all expressed an interest in either working in government, public policy or learning more about those subjects.

Rezin spoke about her career, how Illinois government works, shared her experiences at the Statehouse, and explained how public policy can shape the student’s everyday lives.

They also spent time in small groups discussing and debating policy issues important to them and how any new proposal could face challenges or become successful legislation. During these discussions, Rezin spent time with each small group, asking students questions about their proposed policy change and how they would advocate for their issue.

Students also heard from Brandon Harris, a social media consultant; Ragan Freitag, the chief of staff for the Will County Board; Cody Grandadam, president of Promier Products and owner of Promier Plaza, in Peru; and Tim Carnell, site manager of the Lyondell Basell Morris Complex.

“I have always been interested in politics for as long as I can remember,” said Miranda Nutter from Putnam County High School. “It’s something I am very passionate about, and interacting with my government is something I feel very strongly about.”

“This seemed like a good opportunity to learn more about state government and issues impacting our state,” said Leo Volker from Ottawa High School.

Pupil now enrolled ‘in the school of their residence’

After residency questioned, family withdraws student

TONICA — Recently, the Tonica School District began investigations into whether certain families actually live within the district’s boundaries.

One of those cases has since

been resolved.

“This issue has now been resolved,” said Principal-Superintendent Chuck Schneider. “The student is no longer a student here” but is “enrolled Chuck in the school of their Schneider residence.”

Principalsuperintendent Schneider said the parent immediately enrolled the child elsewhere once

the suspicions were stated, meaning the district did not have to take any action and does not need to charge out-of-district rates.

“I did not make the child leave the school.” Schneider said. “That’s what I want to make clear, is nobody in the school district — myself or the board — restricted the attendance of the child.”

Schneider said there is still one other family whose residence is in question.

Food for Fines returns this year to area libraries, forgiving fines while benefiting local food pantries. Eight area libraries (Peru, LaSalle, Richard A. Mautino, Putnam County, GravesHume, Princeton, Oglesby and Jacobs Library) are sponsoring their annual “Food for Fines” amnesty program benefiting area food pantries.

From Nov. 5 to Nov. 17, these libraries will accept canned or boxed non-perishable food donations as payment of overdue fines. As in past years, the collected donations go to area food pantries, helping restock shelves in November and December.

This is the ninth year area libraries have cooperated benefiting area food pantries and forgiving fines.

Each donated food item pays $1 in library overdue fines up to a maximum of 25 items to pay $25 per overdue library account. Food items must be presented at the libraries’ circulation desks.

Don’t have any overdue fines?

Feel free to bring your donations to a participating library. The libraries are happy to deliver it to area food pantries.

Donated food is not accepted for lost or damaged books, replacement of cards or interlibrary loan fees.

BY BRENT BADER Shaw Media OTTAWA — Universal, single-payer health care is a topic congressional candidate Sara Dady says sparks enthusiasm from constituents.

She believes it would lead to a more competitive workforce and higher wages.

In a meeting Sept. 26 with the Shaw Media Editorial Board, Dady said by removing the burden from employers to cover the cost of health care, they’ll be able to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour to meet or come close to meeting inflation demands.

Dady, who faces U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, in the Nov. 6 election, has met with voters across the 16th Congressional District – which includes Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties — and has found “a vast majority” of those 18 to 35 working two or three minimum-wage jobs, she said.

“You can’t live on $8.25 an hour working 40 hours a week ... when you try to support a family, you absolutely can’t do it.

“If you live in the United States and are working 40 hours a week, you should be able to afford a house, groceries, child care and save for retirement.”

Health care and pay raises Dady, a Rockford immigration lawyer, knows the burden employers carry.

“I realized the pay raises we were giving our employees were getting eaten up in those increased premiums,” Dady said. “So we started increasing the percentage of the premium we pay, and now we pay roughly 75 percent of health care premiums.”

That’s unsustainable, and is keeping businesses from being more competitive, she said, noting that the U.S. is the only first-world country that doesn’t have universal health care.

Single-payer Medicare for all could save $2 trillion over the next 10 years and help provide mental health and drug treatment services to those in need. It would mean more consistent resources for those who need them and reduce the costs associated with repeated offenses, Dady said.

“We pay a lot more because we keep seeing the same people with mental health issues that don’t have access to treatment and care going in and out of our county jails, and in and out of our criminal justice system, who are unable to become productive members of society, because they don’t have access to the care they need.”

Taking the burden of health care off employers will leave them with more money to raise the minimum wage to $15 without having to cut staff, she said.

Immigration Dady supports regulated, not open borders, and says the immigration system, which sets immigrants up to fail, needs to be reformed.

“When I hear people say ‘We just need to enforce the laws we have,’ well, that’s what we have been doing for the last 15 years. When you have bad laws, stepped-up enforcement doesn’t get you better results.”

Visas now are “expensive and complex,” she said, noting that agriculture visas were not issued last year until 22 days into the harvest season.

A broad legalization of the 11 million undocumented immigrants already integrated into communities, and a real worker visa program tied to market demands and issued on a timely basis, would reduce the money taxpayers are spending on civil detentions and immigration courts, and instead funnel them into the legalization process, which is funded by fees paid by immigrants, she said.

The problem lies with Republicans who obstruct reform, she said, identifying Kinzinger as one of those unwilling to join moderate Republicans in the discussion.

Many who support closed borders do so in an effort to curb the flow of drugs, but those resources would be better spent helping users curb addiction and reduce the demand, Dady said.

Tariffs President Donald Trump’s tariffs have hurt local businesses and farms, not China, she said.

“I fail to see how destroying family farms is going to stop Chinese companies from stealing or engaging in U.S. technology theft and unfair practices.

I’m deeply concerned about that.”

Dady supports the Second Amendment, but believes that, like with all rights, there needs to be a balance between the individual’s rights and the responsibility to keep communities safe.

She wants to ensure the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is adequately funded and reassess previous prohibitions on gun research and information.

One such prohibition keeps the government from compiling a centralized record of gun sales, which would allow fast access to information on whether an owner is convicted of a felony after acquiring a gun.

Another law prohibits the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from studying gun violence.

“Congress is charged with making decisions based on good data and facts.

We need that data now,” Dady said.

Town halls Dady said she has a “broader understanding and commitment to representation” than to Kinzinger.

The two have been invited by 17 different organization to participate in candidate forums and debates, but he’s attended only one.

“When you get elected to this office, you represent all of the people in your district. Not just the people you agree with and not just the people who voted for you and not just the people who gave you money.”

She plans to hold four public town halls a year and to create constituent councils, which will bring together people of different background and political alignments, to come to a consensus on issues that directly affect them.

The firefighters and EMTs demonstrated the equipment used during fires and medical emergencies. The students were given safety handouts and also instructed on fire safety procedures, how a fire extinguisher works, and given tours of Tonica’s ambulance and fire truck and Leonore’s rescue truck. Layla Zielinski and Mollie Thompson were the students who earned enough reward points to be given a ride in a fire truck.

The audience is taken along on young Ralphie Parker’s quest for the “Holy Grail of Christmas gifts,” which is of none other than the “official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time!” Despite being rebuffed consistently throughout his journey, Ralphie continues to devise a new plan that will bring him and his coveted BB gun together once and for all this Christmas.

Everyone will be sure to enjoy this versatile score that includes gentle ballads, as well as several full ensemble show stoppers, such as “Ralphie to the Rescue,” “A Major Award,” “Sticky Situation,” “Up On Santa’s Lap,” “Somewhere Hovering Over Indiana” and the undeniable, “You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out.” Don’t worry, they promise all of the classic, iconic scenes haven’t been forsaken.

Upon moving to Illinois, he directed the public-school orchestra program in DeKalb, doubling its enrollment, winning multiple awards, moving into new facilities, and adding the DeKalb High School String Band,

for which he arranged dozens of songs.

Recently, he has begun sharing his love for music in the YouTube video series Great Moments in Orchestral History and Jenilyn through teaching in Roether, the music department soprano at Andrews University. Chris’s conducting mentors include Victor Yampolsky (Northwestern University), Lucia Matos (Northern Illinois University), Cliff Colnot (Civic Orchestra of Chicago), Randal Swiggum (Comprehensive Musicianship through Performance), and Robert Culver (University of Michigan).

Roether, soprano, is a native and current resident of Peru. She holds a Bachelor of Music Education, specializing in voice, from Illinois Wesleyan University, where she studied under Bridget Rose. After five years of teaching music to students from pre-K to high school, she made the decision to return to college and pursue a master of music from Northern Illinois University, specializing in music education and voice. While there, she studied voice with Myron Myers and conducting with Eric Johnson. She currently sings with Cor Cantiamo, a professional choir directed by Eric Johnson and based in DeKalb. She has been fortunate to record four CDs with Cor Cantiamo. She has also sung with Canterbury Singers, a professional choir based in Dixon,

Guest conductor Christopher Wild Illinois. She is voice instructor and director of Choral Activities at Illinois Valley Community College.

She also directs the Illinois Valley Youth Choir, the very choir in which she began her singing career as a young child. In addition, she maintains a voice studio at Music Suite 408 in Peru.

When not making music with her students, Roether enjoys hiking, reading nonfiction, and spending time with her husband, Brian, and their two children.

Lambert visits with IVCC students OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College students in Art Koudelka’s automotive service management class wanting to open their own businesses will be able to hit the ground running due to a visit to their classroom by Amy Lambert, executive director of the Illinois Small Business Development Center at the The Starved Rock Alliance.

Lambert started by telling students what services are available to them through the SBDC. The Illinois SBDC offers no cost, confidential, one-on-one counseling to entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Advisors with the Illinois SBDC are available to help students to start a business whether they have an idea for a product, are dreaming of opening a small business, or simply want to offer a service to the public. She further explained that one of the big

trends in small business at this time is that “main street” entrepreneurship and sole proprietorships are opening up at a higher rate and surviving longer and more successfully than they have in the past.

To further help students, Lambert introduced them to the Business Model Canvas. The canvas provides entrepreneurs with a visual way to plan their business and quickly assess whether their business model can be profitable.

Create a Downstate Caucus to help rest of state It’s time to act on ideas that would benefit the other 94 counties

M

uch of Downstate Illinois (the vast 94-county region outside the 8 metro-Chicago counties) appears to be dying.

Recently at mid-day, I went out onto the three-block main street of my county-seat town — and there wasn’t a solitary auto on the streets of my once-lively little burg!

Mid-size cities like Peoria and Decatur have also been hurt, by the flight of flagship corporate offices to Chicagoland. Several downstate public universities have seen enrollments implode, their host communities twisting in the wind.

The population loss that Illinois suffered in recent years is almost wholly from Downstate.

Our state is one of interdependent regions. The suburbs wouldn’t exist were it not for Chicago. And Chicago wouldn’t exist absent the 19th century synergies with Downstate (and the Midwest), which sent its corn and hogs to Chicago, and then to the East.

UNDERSTANDING ILLINOIS Jim Nowlan Today, however, metropolitan Chicago has to prop up Downstate schools, universities, parks and social services. Chicagoland sends much more in taxes to Springfield than it gets back in services. Downstate takes the rest.

We’re better than that, Downstate.

We don’t want to be a drag on Illinois.

But where and how to start, if we want over time to rebuild our region?

CEO magazine annually ranks the Illinois business climate at 48th, or worse, among the states. I don’t think that’s fair, but if you were a CEO thinking about locating a new plant Downstate, who would you believe — Jimmy Nowlan or your peers?

First, we have to stop wringing our hands; the sky has not fallen.

Illustrations of Downstate success are everywhere. As for economic vitality, Rochelle, in northern Illinois, has attracted more than a bil-

lion dollars in investment in recent years, and the jobs to go with it.

There are vibrant, charming small towns, from Galena and Mount Carroll to Princeton, Pittsfield, Arcola, and way down to Anna-Jonesboro, to name but a few.

Year after year, the National Science Foundation awards more research dollars (hundreds of millions every year) to the University of Illinois than to any university in the nation. This is one reason the U. of I. is among the very top institutions in the world in patents and inventions, such as the world-wide web, which was hatched in Urbana-Champaign.

Second, we need to develop an agenda for reinvigorating the parts of Downstate that have withered, and it is possible to do so, though it won’t happen overnight.

I have just created two organizations: Downstate Matters Too and the Downstate Caucus. The first is a tax-exempt (awaiting IRS OK) educational organization that will strive to revive flagging spirits.

Downstate Matters Too will be a compelling social media presence, overflowing with content, to rally, inform, illuminate and have some fun telling the world — and our-

selves — about all that is going on, and of what we have on the drawing board. Our goal is to attract scores of thousands of active followers.

I am recruiting a dynamic creative digital manager to run this operation. The good-paying job will not require relocation, so if you are — or know of — such a person who has an affection for Downstate Illinois, contact me at jnowlan3@ gmail.com. Let’s make things happen for Downstate.

The Downstate Caucus will be an advocacy group with broad individual, civic and business membership, to push elected officials and civic leaders to enact policies that can help jumpstart Downstate Illinois.

The focus will be on business climate, higher education, natural resources, and long-term thinking, something never, for some inexplicable reason, ever done in Illinois.

Evidence just doesn’t seem to add up in Pritzker suit

T

he more I read it, the more skeptical I became of the racial discrimination lawsuit filed against the J.B. Pritzker campaign by 10 current and former field-level workers last week.

The initial demand for $7.5 million in 1 business day along with personal recommendations from Pritzker himself in exchange for their silence really hurts their claims, in my eyes. The suit itself seemed hastily and sloppily drafted. The lawyers even spelled “Pritzker” wrong. Beyond that, other things look fishy.

Only one of the field organizers who sued has been on the campaign longer than 2 to 5 months. (One was on staff just a few days.) And yet the lawsuit complains about their lack of promotions and advancement in the campaign. That’s really odd. Who gets a job promotion after a couple of months knocking on doors and putting events together? Heck, who even expects one?

A Democratic family in Peoria was apparently so enthusiastic about sup-

And then the staffer had to sleep in her car until the campaign found her a hotel in “an unsafe part of town.”

The campaign (which has broken a national campaign spending record, mind you) then wouldn’t move her because of a tight budget, so she quit?

That appeared improbable to me.

The Pritzker campaign provided receipts to the Peoria Journal Star showing the campaign and a local party official paid for five different hotel rooms for that staffer over just 7 days, and more than one room on some days. She then went to a staff retreat for 2 days in the suburbs, was

provided a room in a Peoria supporter’s home the day after that, and she quit the campaign the following day “effective immediately.”

The lawsuit claims that when the plaintiffs “asked why J.B. Pritzker did not visit their office, they were told that ‘he’ll visit when they stop shooting.’” The campaign kept records of Pritzker’s 10 Chicago field office visits, however, and they show he visited every one of them a total of 31 times, except the two that opened in September, which his running mate visited. He visited the office listed in the lawsuit four times.

The lawsuit also alleges that a regional field director was “given a shiny new job title and pay raise,” but was “strongly encouraged” to cut off his dreadlocks, “therefore, he no longer comes across as crass and was the least offensive African American that could be put in that spot.”

Recognize that language? It’s a paraphrase of what Pritzker told Rod Blagojevich on those FBI surveillance tapes when he was trying to

get him to appoint Secretary of State Jesse White to the U.S. Senate.

The dread-less staffer in question issued a statement on his Facebook account angrily denying that anyone had told him to cut his hair and even denying that he’d received a promotion and a raise.

But aside from all the very real problems and even sketchiness with this lawsuit, something must have happened. It’s not every day that 10 campaign staffers sue their employer for discrimination and retaliation a few weeks before an election. In fact, I don’t think anything like this has ever happened before in the history of American elections.

Would these young people really take a drastic step like this over absolutely nothing? I find that hard to believe.

Whatever the case, this should serve as a learning experience for Pritzker if he’s elected governor.
