‘SEIZE HOPE’ FUNDRAISER AND AWARENESS WALK

Youngster, 2, diagnosed with rare form of epilepsy Inaugural walk for Lostant toddler scheduled for Oct. 13 BY ANGELA ACCOMANDO Shaw Media LOSTANT — December 2015 brought the birth of two beautiful boys for Matt and Trisha Jamison, of Lostant. The twins, Everett and Owen, were born healthy — but within the first year, Everett began having seizures. After several doctor appointments and tests, it was determined Everett deals with Dravet syndrome. Trisha explained the disease her baby boy faces and shared her excitement for the inaugural “Seize Hope” fundraiser and awareness walk taking place Saturday, Oct. 13. “Dravet syndrome is a seizure disorder, a rare form of epilepsy. It affects 1 in 20,000 children. It is a mutation of the SCN1A gene, a sodium channel blocker, and is a form of intractable epilepsy, which means, essentially, it is resistant to medications. DS usually comes out in the first year of life, triggered by illness and/or vaccinations,” Trisha said. “As the child ages, the syndrome progresses. It causes developmental and cognitive delays.” Trisha has a theory about the daily issues Everett endures. “I truly believe the medications also have a hand in delays, and the seizures can occur any time with or without a trigger. Some seizures can last for hours,” she said. She teared up as she explained how her other son, Owen, is at a stage in his life where she watches him play in the backyard, but without the twin brother he could

Shining light for family A shining light for the Jamison family is a woman named Erika Fleck, service coordinator for the LaSalle County Epilepsy Foundation of North Central Illinois. “Erika has been there for us since the day I met her — through a support group. If I am having a bad day or even just need a ride to an appointment, she is there. She is absolutely amazing.” Fleck explained how she got to the place she is now and why she is so passionate about epilepsy awareness. “I was 30 years old when I was diagnosed with Dravet,” Fleck said. “I later had brain surgery. I have, thankfully, been symptom-free since, but I knew I had to do something to make people more aware of this rare form of epilepsy, and epilepsy in general. “I didn’t want people like me to go

through what I did — trying to get information and the right diagnosis,” she said. “We have to hold onto hope that something, a cure of sorts, will come out. Knowing about this is half the battle.”

A mother’s message And as hard as the journey has been for the Jamisons and families like them, Trisha has a message. “What I want to stress about Everett is that DS does not define him. He is a strong, funny, loving little 2-yearold. He’s smart, he gives the best hugs in the world, and his laugh is super contagious. I don’t want people to feel sorry for him or us. I want people to join our army and cheer him on every day. I want people to hug their loved ones and say ‘I love you’ every day — because we, as a society, take everyday life for granted. Be thankful and be grateful,” she said. Trisha praised friends and members of the community for the immense help and support her family has received. “We love our little village and especially the fire department and ambulance. They have been nothing short of amazing for us. They go above and beyond for sure,” she said. “Erika is amazing, and friends, Pete and Jody Pawlak — who will provide entertainment — and so many others are helping to make this event an awesome one.” As the inaugural event, the Jamisons and Fleck are thrilled with the outpouring of support they’ve seen already. “This is the first walk either of us have ever done, so we’re learning as we go. We’re hoping to have all the kinks worked out and get bigger and better every year. But I have to say, we’ve already exceeded expectations. Currently I’m sitting on a list of over 115 registered walkers. “That’s huge,” Trisha said. “I honestly was just hoping to have at least 50.”

LOSTANT — The village of Lostant is working with North Central Illinois Council of Governments to apply for a public infrastructure grant to replace the existing water tower that is due this fall. Income surveys were mailed out to village residents on Aug. 28 and again on Sept. 13. According to the North Central Illinois Council of Governments, it is very important for residents to return their completed survey to the agency as soon as possible in order for the village to submit a competitive grant application. Lostant residents who misplaced the surveys that were mailed to them, or who have any questions, are asked to please contact the North Central Illinois Council of Governments at 815-433-5830.

Progress made on grant application for water tower BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — Lostant is continuing preparations to submit its new application for a $500,000 grant to help pay for its water tower project. A previous attempt had left Lostant wanting, as the request missed opportunities to gain points in the village’s favor. This time, the particular areas in question are being addressed. “We got enough surveys now for this project. It looks good,” said Mayor Jack Immel at this week’s village board meeting. The North Central Illinois Council of Governments provided aid in obtaining the survey results.

New LED lights coming to Lostant’s Main Street LOSTANT — Lostant will be installing new LEDs on Main Street to replace its current lights. The village estimates a cost of $1,053 to replace the 13 lights on Main Street with LEDs, but expects a reimbursement from ComEd to effectively create a lower price point. While the reimbursement amount is still unknown, it is expected that the lights will pay for themselves within a year. The decision to install them now rather than waiting for information regarding reimbursement comes as the days grow shorter and darkness falls earlier. The village hopes to begin receiving benefits from the reduction in usage cost to help offset the initial price of purchase and installation. The earlier purchase also helps the village meet ComEd’s deadline of Dec. 15 for the lights to be up and running. — Zachary J. ing, which will detail the extent of the tower’s condition. A previous

attempt to receive such information provided confir mation the tower, built in 1911, was in need of repair, but the information was lacking. However, the tower is known to be pitted — “digging into the sides,” as Immel explained — and with a possibility of leaks in the near future. Immel also indicated a hope that photos might be available to submit with the report. “We’re hoping to get the grant,” Immel said. The cost of the project had been estimated previously at $850,000. The village has worked out $350,000 with a bonding office for the project, which would help to cover the estimated cost.

How to handle pesky pests a topic of discussion for village board Village might take care of problems, bill property owners BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — As pest infestations have shown up in different towns, Lostant is concerned about the possibility it could share that fate. Mayor Jack Immel suggested at this week’s village board meeting

that the village is “worried about all infestations,” but used cockroaches and mice as examples. The concern comes as locations in town have begun to attract unwanted guests, a number said to be up to five houses. “It’s like a city block we’re talking about now,” said Dave Mertes. One such location was noted to have created a situation welcoming to pests by leaving different materials in a trailer.

The village is said to be looking into its options. Mertes suggested the possibility that the village could take care of the issue and then bill those in question. “I like the idea. We fix it and recoup,” Immel said. “They leveraged that and it worked,” Mertes said, referring to an incident in a nearby town. “They said they’d take care of it and then bill them.” The issue had been quickly resolved.

In other discussion: • South of Founders Road on Main Street will be closed for work on the railroad crossing. • The village will be attaching its drop box outside the Village Hall, between the two large garage doors, wherein residents will be able to deposit their water bill payments, dog tag payments and other such items. • Trick-or-treat times are set for 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Firefighters respond to 17 calls, engage in multiple training activities ISO audit has been slated for Nov. 1 TONICA — Tonica Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) Chief Al Stremlau reported there were 17 emergency calls during September, with the year-to-date total rising to 141. The department responded to one fire investigation, two accidents, and 14 ambulance calls. Training for the month included a review of the equipment on all trucks; a self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) search drill; and operations training on hoses, nozzles and pumps. The annual request for donations from property owners and renters within the village limits will be conducted during October. This request is similar to the one made in the springtime to residents outside of the village, but within the rural protection area. These donations help the department provide fire, ambulance and rescue services without property taxes.

and year to present. If they have had multiple residences within the past 10 years, they will need to bring in a list of those addresses and the duration as previously listed.) • Applicants must bring a current photo or a photo will be taken in Sen. LOWELL — Jeffrey Howard Johnson, 46, the No. 1 dad in all of LaSalle County, died suddenly Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2018, while working at his desk. Jeff was born July 20, 1972, in LaSalle to Rita Kae Huss and Jerald Lee Johnson. Jeff left us with two beautiful children, Jonny Jerald and Lauren Kae. He is also survived by his father, Jerry (Kathy) Johnson; his ex-wife, Jody Mikolajczyk; four siblings, Vicki Sue (Steve) Kenyon, Butch (LeeAnn), Bill (Michelle) and Eric (Melissa); five nieces and six nephews; and two great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Rita Kae (Janusick) Huss. Jeff was a young entrepreneur with a lawn business, J&J Construction in Tonica and Jeffrey’s bar in Lostant. Jeff and his family moved across the U.S. working for ADM and most recently he worked at Airgas in Peru. He had just finished building his “dream garage” and planned on painting the inside over the weekend. Jeff was a devoted father who loved his home in the timber, and enjoyed hunting, fishing and being on the water in Wisconsin and Florida. He was an animal lover and was still mourning the loss of his dogs, Suzy and Krystal. Everyone loved Jeff’s quick smile and his laid back attitude. He will be remembered as the life of the party and a stranger to no one. In lieu of flowers, a fund for his children has been established at the Illini State Bank in Tonica. In honor of Jeff’s life, his family will be receiving guests at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Marshall County Sportsman Club, 3059 County Road 1250 N., Wenona. At 5 p.m. there will be a memorial and everyone is invited to share their favorite memories of loving, irreplaceable Jeff.

The Boyles’ bequest of more than $620,000 to the IVCC Foundation helped fund the purchase of 587 theatre seats, environmentally-friendly stained western hemlock wall treatments and energy-efficient LED house lighting — as well as greatly improving the accessibility of the Cultural Centre. IVCC President Jerry Corcoran will emcee the event, which will feature a brief history of the Boyle connection with IVCC by Fran Brolley and remarks from theatre director Dr. David Kuester and Student Government Association President Xavier Braboy. A plaque honoring the Boyles will be unveiled. Walter, who died at age 94 in 2008, served 22 years on the IVCC Foundation board and nine years as a college trustee. Stage 212’s announces upcoming auditions

LASALLE — Director Angie McKenzie has announced auditions for the first production of Stage 212’s 2019 season, “The Kitchen Witches,” the culinary-themed comedy by Caroline Smith, will be held Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 20, at 1 p.m. at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle. Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two “mature” cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years. When circumstances put them together on a TV show, the insults are flung harder than the food. Dolly’s long-suffering TV-producer son, Stephen, tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly’s dressing room

is one inch closer to the set than Isobel’s, it’s a losing battle, and the show becomes a ratings smash. McKenzie will be casting two women able to play age 30-70, one man able to play 20-40, and one role suitable for either a man or a woman of any age.
