Rep. Long releases apology statement to former co-worker

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media State Rep. Jerry Long, R-Streator, released an apology Sept. 25 to a former co-worker who said she was physically harassed, among other complaints, leading the state GOP to pull resources from his campaign and ask for his resignation.

Long said Sept. 19 he touched a former co-worker on her neck, denying any wrongdoing and vowing to stay in his race against Democratic opponent Lance Yednock, of Ottawa, for the 76th District house seat.

The House Republican Organization has said Long’s story does not match the one found in an independent investigation corroborated by a witness. The organization said it has a zero tolerance policy for harassment.

The Sept. 25 apology is the first from Long regarding this incident.

“Although I feel that the non-threatening touch of my co-worker was nothing more than act of concern,

and it was never conveyed to me that it was a problem, I want to say that I never want to ever put anyone in that position of being uneasy,” Long said.

“I, therefore, reach State Rep. out with a sincere apolJerry Long R-Streator ogy to my co-worker of the situation that I have put her into.”

Long said he will likely post the apology to social media.

Long has said the complaints against him stem from a contentious relationship with the House Republican Organization. Between the House Republican Organization and Illinois Republican Party, Long had received more than $125,000 in this campaign with a donation recorded Sept. 7, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

“It’s no secret that the Republican Party hacks have disowned me and pulled away from me for some-

thing that has yet been proven,” Long said Sept. 23 in a Facebook post. “They have chosen to find me guilty without due process, therefore we must implement a grassroots campaign to make sure we maintain this seat.”

Long said he will address the complaint at a campaign event at August Hill Winery in Utica, in which he’s asking those in attendance to open their checkbook for $25, $50 or $100 donations.

The House Republican Organization, through spokeswoman Eleni Demertzis, said last week it stands by the independent investigator’s report and subsequent actions rendered to Long.

The complainant said in a statement through the House Republican Organization “the verbal abuse and abuse of power on a daily basis resulted in a hostile work environment.” Her name has been withheld by the state organization to respect a request for privacy.

Seasonal flu vaccine clinics are underway OTTAWA — The LaSalle County Health Department is urging everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza. The department has received its shipment of flu vaccine and has begun hosting clinics at the department.

Seasonal influenza vaccine and influenza HD (High Dose) vaccine for persons 65 and older will also be available. All health department influenza vaccines are preservative free.

The fee for the seasonal flu shot will be $25. The fee for influenza HD will be $50. Insurance billing will be provided for Medicare Part B and Medicaid eligible clients and also for most health insurance companies.

You must have your insurance card with you, though no doctor’s order is required. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The upcoming clinic schedule will be as follows: Oct. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m.; Oct. 25 from 1 to 5 p.m.; and Nov. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m.

The flu vaccine’s effectiveness varies from year to year, but for those who still get the flu, the symptoms are milder than in those who haven’t been immunized. Influenza HD will be given to persons 65 and older.

Human immune defenses become weaker with age as the body’s ability to have a good response decreases.

A higher dose of protection in the vaccine is added to give older people a better response and is intended to make it more effective.

Completed surveys needed in support of water tower grant LOSTANT — The village of Lostant is working with North Central Illinois Council of Governments to apply for a public infrastructure grant to replace the existing water tower that is due this fall.

Income surveys were mailed out

to village residents on Aug. 28 and again on Sept. 13. According to the North Central Illinois Council of Governments, it is very important for residents to return their completed survey to the agency as soon as possible in order for the village to submit a

competitive grant application.

Lostant residents who misplaced the surveys that were mailed to them, or who have any questions, are asked to please contact the North Central Illinois Council of Governments at 815-433-5830.

Some of the modifications were so the home could be used for the elderly. When Cora died in 1942, she bequeathed money for the 18-room mansion to be established as a home for the elderly, which closed in 2013 when it was down to one resident.

OTTAWA — Ottawa’s historic Cora J. Pope home has been vacant since 2013, but it may be ready to take new families in by March.

The building, 116 W. Prospect Ave., is in the process of being renovated to become a bed and breakfast, but most of those renovations are being done to bring the home back to the same design and state it would have been in when Milton Pope built the house in 1902 for his wife, Cora. With some modern updates, of course.

It’s a passion project for Larry Mitchell, and while he’s technically a co-owner of the project he prefers to think of himself as the building’s steward.

“It’s our responsibility,” Mitchell said. “We’re put here to take care of it because (the Pope family) is not here anymore.”

“We’re stewards of this property and we’ll continue to care for it and love it until I go, and when I go, I hope someone continues to do the same thing,” he added.

The owners closed on the building on Sept. 6, which was a long time coming since Mitchell first viewed the house nearly three years ago.

“I fell in love with this place the moment I walked through the door,” he said.

The owners — who also include Mitchell’s wife, Tonica native Elin Arnold-Mitchell, plus Dr. Patricia Hoagland and her husband, John Hoagland — immediately got to work on the building, which includes

Music program continues to grow Students have taken delivery of brass and wind instruments

BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — The Tonica Grade School music program celebrated a milestone last week when the students took delivery of several musical instruments.

The newly returned program, now in its second year and led by teacher Samantha Farb, started from scratch, so the arrival of the instruments was significant.

“It’s been a challenge, but it’s also been a great opportunity,” Farb said of the revitalized curriculum.

Farb has been fostering a love of music within her students for 14 years and studied music education at VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. As well as being an accomplished flutist, Farb is also an experienced stage performer who frequently performs in productions at Engle Lane Theatre in Streator.

The new Tonica band consists of eight students, and Farb is hopeful their excitement will be contagious and help attract some of their classmates toward the band and choir programs.

“What I love about it is, everyone can do it, everyone can enjoy it, and learning music helps the students in all areas of their education,” she said.

Farb added that music also helps her students feel proud of themselves as they learn, builds their imaginations, promotes teamwork and teaches them self-discipline.

“The students like being able to get up and be active and creative,” Farb said when talking about what her students have enjoyed about band.

Her group will soon be practicing hard as they begin to master their chosen instruments because their Beginning Band Demonstration Concert is scheduled for Feb. 7.

“We’re on our way, but it’s not a quick thing. Getting them excited is half the battle, but we’re all happy to have music back at TGS,” Farb said.

The new band and choir programs are still in need of more instruments and additional funding if the groups are to continue to grow, but Farb said she is up to the challenge.

“I’ve received approval to host some fundraisers for additional equipment, and we’d also love to

have any instruments people would be willing to donate to our program,” she said.

“Our numbers are small now, but I think once the students see how much fun it can be, they’ll want to be a part of it,” she added.

Previously, the group also renovated the hilltop cottage house to the east of the property that is now being rented out.

The restoration project is reminiscent of a large puzzle, which has Mitchell attempting to either find the same pieces that were used in the original house design or through recreation. Luckily, some of the pieces reside in the mansion’s basement wherein a lot of old pieces, such as the columns that graced the mansion’s original western entrance as well as some windows, were kept for storage, likely in the hopes someone like Mitchell would once again place them up around the home.

Some of the more modern additions will remain for now, such as a large fire escape that hangs on the side.

Cody Lyons, 47, of Tonica was traveling south on East 2nd Road while following a tractor-trailer driven by David Walter, 28, of Grand Ridge. Lyons was unable to see Walter attempting to turn into a field entrance and struck the rear of the trailer.

Emergency personnel found a box trailer semi on its side and off of the northbound road. The driver initially couldn’t get out of the cab, but was able to get out on his own as emer-

gency personnel arrived. The box trailer was empty. Tonica EMTs examined, treated and assessed the driver who signed a waiver to not transport him to the hospital. The state police investigated the accident. Tonica provided traffic control while the wrecker service removed the semi truck, and they cleared the scene in about 90 minutes.

“All the decorative stuff had to be compromised to do the utilitarian thing,” Mitchell said. “Now that the home is returning to its original purpose, which is as a place for people to live and enjoy, we’re going to maintain safety but we’re going to do it in a more decorative fashion.”

The first two floors are expected to be available for rent in March and new bathrooms are being installed to best serve the up to four rooms that can be rented.

Mitchell’s excitement for the project is reinvigorated every time he unearths a new piece of the home that was thought forgotten and through talking to those in the community who share their stories and own relationships with the home.

He’s excited to open the doors to visitors next year, but estimates work will continue to the third floor as well as to the exterior after that.

“This is the rest of my life,” Mitchell said. “It doesn’t end in March, it just starts because in March other people will be able to enjoy it and I get to keep rebuilding the house as it was back then.”

• BAT Continued from Page 5 To date, in Illinois 67 bats have tested positive for rabies in 2018. Bats are the primary carriers of rabies in Illinois. You cannot tell by looking at a bat if it is rabid.

The animal does not have to be aggressive or exhibit other symptoms to have rabies. Changes in any animal’s normal behavior, such as difficulty walking or an overall appearance of illness, can be early signs of rabies. A bat that is active during the day, found on the ground and unable to fly, is likely to be rabid. Such bats should never be handled.

Rabies is a virus that affects the nervous system of humans and other mammals. Humans can get rabies after being bitten by an infected animal. Rabies can also be contracted when saliva from a rabid animal gets directly into the eyes, nose, mouth or a wound. Without preventive treatment, rabies is a fatal disease . Bat bites may not be felt while sleeping, and special consideration also needs to be taken when a bat is found in a child’s room or in a disabled person’s living area. Preventive treatment with rabies immune globulin and a vaccine series must begin immediately.

The following tips can help prevent the spread of rabies: Be a responsible animal owner. Keep

vaccinations up-to-date for all pets (indoor/outdoor). If a bat is in your home, do not release the bat outdoors until after speaking with animal control or public health officials. If you are able to do so without putting yourself at risk for physical (more) contact or being bitten, try to cover the bat with a large can or bucket, and close the door to the room. Seek immediate veterinary assistance if your pet is bitten by a wild animal or exposed to a bat. Do not handle, feed or attract wild animals with open garbage cans or litter. Never adopt wild animals or bring them into your home.

Do not try to nurse sick wild animals to health. Call animal control or an animal rescue agency for assistance. Teach children never to handle unfamiliar animals, wild or domestic, even if they appear friendly. “Love your own, leave other animals alone” is a good principle for children to learn to reduce the risk of exposures to rabid animals. Maintain homes and other buildings so bats cannot gain entry.

The parents of the couple were Frank and Emma Folty, and Peter and Betty Ribolzi, all deceased.

Bob and Diane are the parents of two children, William (Norma) Folty and Dick Folty. They also have five grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren, four great-grandchildren and five stepgreat-grandchildren.

The couple operated Folty’s Market for 42 years and still reside in Tonica.

An open house, hosted by their children, is planned for 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Tonica American Legion.

who developed Starved Rock into a private park and entertainment venue; P.H. Harbeck, the first officer “Starved Rock Sheriff” when the park became the second state park in Illinois (and who wore the badge number of 666); and, a CCC commander from company 1609, who was stationed at Parkman’s Plain (now known as the LaSalle and Tonti Canyon parking lot).

Hikes will head out at 5 p.m. and then again at 6 p.m. Hikers will be led by a CCC recruit of Company 2601, and the famous ghostly figure of “the Pink Lady” — an Edwardian-styled woman from the late 1800s, whose ghostly image is said to have been captured on film by a park visitor.

The “Haunted Hike” hikes are free, but pre-registration is required.

Reddick Mansion will present ‘Ghosts of Ottawa Past’ on Oct. 12 and 13

OTTAWA — On Friday, Oct. 12, and Saturday, Oct. 13, the Reddick Mansion Association will reprise its “Ghosts of Ottawa Past” program with some new and different stories.

The guided tour will begin in the East Parlors of the candle-lit Reddick Mansion where participants will “attend” Mr. Reddick’s funeral. After the funeral, the group will take an approximate quarter-mile outside walk along Columbus and LaSalle streets. The tour will include the story of the only recorded case of spontaneous combustion in LaSalle County, and a stop at the site of the death of the first Ottawa fireman killed in while on duty. During the walk, other famous and infamous ghostly characters from Ottawa’s past may also appear.

Two tours will be given each night —

one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m. After each of the walking tours, the groups will return to the Reddick Mansion for hot apple cider and refreshments.

The cost is $15 per person and, due to the subject matter, participants should be at least 12 years old. For reservations, call the Reddick Mansion at 815-433-6100 or visit their website at www.reddickmansion.org. Each tour is limited to 20 people and reservations are strongly suggested. All money raised will be used for the preservation and renovation of the Reddick Mansion.

The Reddick Mansion, at 100 W. Lafayette St., was built in 1858, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites.

It is open to the public for tours and also has meeting/reception rooms available for rent for special events.

The LaSalle theater group cooks up big laughs in winter with “Kitchen Witches,” the culinary-themed comedy

by Caroline Smith, directed by Angie McKenzie. Spring covers a serious topic, bipolar disorder, in thought-provoking fashion with “Next to Normal,” the Pulitzer Prize- and Tony Award-winning rock musical by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt, directed by Dave Roden.

Summer heats up in classic fashion with the multiple Tony Award-winning “Hello, Dolly” the enduring and endearing musical by Jerry Herman and Michael Stewart, directed by Phil Grant and Neal Phelps. It’s no mystery where the laughs are in the fall as “The Game’s Afoot,” Ken Ludwig’s hilarious Sherlock Holmes themed comedic thriller, takes the stage, directed by Larry Kelsey.

Season tickets are $60, a nearly 15 percent savings over buying individual tickets. Season ticket holders are able to reserve individual seats before tickets go on sale to the general public. Angels start at $150. For their extra donation, an Angel receives two season subscriptions, has top priority when ordering tickets for any of the season’s shows and is acknowledged in each show program as a supporter of Stage 212. Stage 212 is the Starved Rock area’s community theater and has presented nearly 200 productions since 1968.
