Doing the fall fieldwork

A definitive sign autumn has arrived in the Midwest as farmers harvest their crops. This farmer near Tonica was recently spotted tilling his soil after what was hopefully a successful harvest. According to a U.S. Department of Agriculture Progress Report, crops this year matured more quickly than in 2017. A recent report stated 75 percent of the state’s corn was mature by Sept. 16, higher than the 37 percent reported during 2017. By the same date, 87 percent of soybeans had begun to change color, compared to 67 percent last year.

Administration investigates concerns raised regarding residency of students Several students might not live within district

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Suspicions of out-ofdistrict students attending Tonica Grade School as though they reside in district, without paying the outof-district tuition fees, could lead to changes in future re-enrollment procedures.

Principal-Superintendent Chuck Schneider informed the board during its Sept. 19 meeting that he had been made aware of two possible cases where students had been registered as residing in district and had thus avoided out-of-district fees.

The potential situation was brought to Schneider’s attention from taxpaying members of the community.

At this time, these instances are only suspected, but the issue is

being investigated.

“I think it’s the right thing to do for the taxpayers,” Schneider said of the investigation.

To avoid the potential for this sort of Chuck Schneider occurrence, the board has begun discussions Principalsuperintendent, of whether and how to Tonica Grade change future re-enrollment procedures.

School They hope to continue requiring less of returning families than newcomers, but the possibility exists that more verification of residence could be requested.

The current tuition rate is estimated at $12,708.97 per pupil.

Art program revival update The school district, which is continuing to look at a possible revival of its art program, is now considering the possibility that a grant could help.

The Small Rural School Achievement grant (SRSA) “could help offset the cost of implementing an art program,” Schneider said.

Schneider has indicated a desire that whoever teaches have “some knowledge of art and the teaching of art.”

The cost for a teacher could be approximately $8,000 to $15,000, depending on who receives the position and what qualifications they hold.

He said the revival, along with the resurrection of music programs, would be part of the fulfillment of a 2016 promise to the community.

“The board had said to the community in 2016 that, if we can bring programs back, we will,” Schneider said.

The Young Rembrandts program will still be available for students.

The school and program have an agreement that Young Rembrandts can bring the program to the building, so it could continue as long as it remains viable.

Completed surveys needed in support of water tower grant to village residents on Aug. 28 and again on Sept. 13. According to the North Central Illinois Council of Governments, it is very important for residents to return their completed survey to the agency as soon as possible in order for the village to submit a

competitive grant application.

Arukah Institute forms new teen support groups

LOSTANT — The time is approaching for three Lostant School Board seats to be up for re-election, and one member does not plan to run again.

Mike Phillips, Cindy Burcar and Quillard Skinner are all up for re-election.

Phillips has stated that he does not plan to seek another term. All three of these seats are four-year terms.

Nominating petitions for election are available online or at the LaSalle County Clerk’s office in Ottawa for circulation of petitions in the fall, and filing in early December.

PRINCETON — The Arukah Institute is starting a new cohort of teen support groups, “Working Through Grief and Loss,” beginning Oct. 4.

The grief surrounding loss because of death, separation, physical/mental illness or other circumstance is difficult for teenagers to process alone.

This group will build trust among participants, followed by guided, interactive discussions and sharing.

Teens can expect to gain coping skills and a more hopeful perception of their situation, as well as forming lasting, healthy relationships with peers.

Register by calling the Arukah Institute at 815-872-2943. The cost is $75 for seven weeks, and scholarships are available.

The community is also invited to attend the Farm-to-Table Fundraiser from 5 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30, at The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens.

The five-course menu will be locally sourced, and entertainment will be by talented musicians from our communities.

Proceeds will benefit Arukah’s programs and operations, in order to keep services at low-to-no cost.

OTTAWA — The LaSalle County Health Department is urging everyone 6 months and older to get vaccinated against seasonal influenza.

The department has received its shipment of flu vaccine and will begin hosting clinics at the department beginning Saturday, Sept. 29.

Seasonal influenza vaccine and influenza HD (High Dose) vaccine for persons 65 and older will also be available. All health department influenza vaccines are preservative free.

The fee for the seasonal flu shot will be $25. The fee for influenza HD will be $50. Insurance billing will be provided for Medicare Part B and Medicaid eligible clients and also for most health insurance companies.

You must have your insurance card with you, though no doctor’s order is required. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

The clinic schedule will be as follows: Sept. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Oct. 18 from 1 to 5 p.m.; Oct. 25 from 1 to 5 p.m.; and Nov. 15 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Long gives his version of harassment complaint Streator Republican lawmaker says he won’t resign from seat

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media State Rep. Jerry Long gave his account Sept. 19 of an incident that brought about harassment allegations, admitting he touched a former co-worker’s neck, but saying he doesn’t believe he did anything wrong.

A spokeswoman for the House Republican Organization said Long’s story doesn’t match what was found in an independent investigation and that the organization has a zero tolerance policy for harassment.

On Sept. 12, the House Republican Organization asked the Streator Republican to resign, and the organization, along with the Illinois Republican Party, withdrew support of his campaign.

Other state lawmakers, including Rep. Tom Demmer, R-Dixon, and Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, who either share or have adjacent districts to Long’s 76th, have asked for his resignation.

Long said he will not resign. He is opposed in the November election by Democrat Lance Yednock, of Ottawa, in a race considered a battleground between the two parties.

Long’s account On the Friday before Labor Day, Aug. 31, Long said one of his staff members called him to her computer, but he can’t recall what the two of them were looking at on the screen. He said the staff member was not feeling well.

“She was at the computer. I’m standing right behind, and I’m looking at it,” Long told The Times Wednesday. “She leans back. She goes, ‘Ah man I’m tense, I’m getting a migraine headache.’ And I grabbed her neck. Not grab. I touched her neck. And I said: ‘You do feel tense.’

And then I said I’m going to grab my stuff and go.”

Long said he then took some interns to a pizza restaurant in Ottawa. When he returned from dinner, the staff member had left. He said he had never touched the complainant before this incident.

Long didn’t speak to the staff member all weekend and the co-worker didn’t answer her text messages Monday or Tuesday.

Long received a call later that Tuesday indicating a complaint had been made to the House Republican Organization and he was being investigated for harassment. State Rep. Long said initially Jerry Long investigators told him R-Streator they were looking into “sexual harassment.”

“Once they realized the touch wasn’t sexual harassment, they said it’s a hostile work environment,” Long said.

Long said he couldn’t initially figure what the complaint was about, until he remembered about a day and a half later when his wife woke him up on her way to work.

“She walked out of the house. I laid down, and five minutes later, my mind is wandering,” Long said. “I actually sat up quickly, holding my head. ‘I touched her neck. I touched her neck. I touched her neck.’ That’s how inconsequential it was.”

Eleni Demertzis, from the office of House Republican Leader Jim Durkin, said Long’s story was not the one received from the complainant.

The complainant issued a written statement last week through the House Republican Organization after Long told media he had done nothing wrong. Her name was withheld to respect a request for privacy.

“Rep. Long’s denial of his actions and behavior are troubling and disappointing.

“While there was an incident of physical harassment, the verbal abuse and abuse of power on a daily basis resulted in a hostile work environment that put anyone around him at risk.

“It is my sincere hope that Rep. Long resigns from his position and gets the help that he needs.”

Robert Milan, a former U.S. attorney for the Northern Illinois District, conducted the internal investigation, along with Andrea Gonzalez, both of Alvarez & Marsal. The investigation was a workplace investigation, not criminal. No report has been released, including to Long, who said he is requesting documentation.

“The facts brought forward by the complainant were corroborated by a witness and ultimately deemed truthful and founded by the independent investigators,” Demertzis said in a statement Wednesday. “Leader Durkin and his leadership team stand by the independent investigator’s report and subsequent actions rendered to Rep. Long.”

The House Republican Organization said it was made aware of “Long’s behavior” over Labor Day weekend.

“We immediately brought in a third party firm to investigate these allegations, and upon completion of their report on Sept. 12, a decision was made to withdraw support of Rep. Long’s campaign, restrict access to all caucus resources and recommend he step down from his position,” Demertzis said in a statement last week. “The House Republican caucus and organization has a zero tolerance policy on harassment of any kind.”

There have been a series of harassment allegations in Illinois politics.

Last month, state Rep. Nick Sauer, R-Lake Barrington, resigned following a report of accusations he sent nude photos of an ex-girlfriend to other men online. Both Sauer and Long were first elected to the House in 2016.

Additionally, Democratic House Speaker Michael Madigan removed his chief of staff Tim Mapes after a House employee said she experienced years of harassment by Mapes, who also served as executive director of the Democratic Party of Illinois.

Democratic Sen. Ira Silverstein was cleared of sexual harassment, but was found to act in a manner “unbecoming of a legislator,” according to a Chicago Tribune report.

The speaker also dismissed longtime political worker Kevin Quinn after a letter was sent accusing him of sexual harassment and Madigan parted ways with lobbyist Shaw Decremer over abusive actions during House Democratic races.

Robo calls On Sept. 14, Long addressed his constituents on his Facebook page, explaining the complaint stemmed from a disagreement with a staff member regarding a robocall.

“I refused to record HRO’s message and recorded my own message to the people I represent, which infuriated the (employee),” Long wrote then.

“Rather than allow me the ability to speak my own mind and represent the 76th District, the HRO has used this simple disagreement as a way to pull their support.”

Between the House Republican Organization and Illinois Republican Party, Long received more than $100,000 for his campaign in 2016 and more than $1 million in 2014.

The GOP regained the 76th District after Mautino had served two decades in the House and Mautino’s father had served as state rep. from 1975 to 1991. If Democrats gain nine seats, they will reclaim a supermajority in the House, making it easier to overturn gubernatorial vetoes.

The House Republican Organization was fully invested into the 2018 race and spent more than $40,000 on mail in one week alone. The Democratic party, likewise, had invested $127,787.41 into Yednock’s race by the end of August.

In July, Long appeared with Gov.

Bruce Rauner in Ottawa, along with Demmer, to sign a pledge for term limits.

Long shook his head when asked why the HRO would pull resources less than two months before the election in a district it covets.

“If they lose one seat, Democrats don’t gain the supermajority,” Long said. “They can afford to lose one seat. In 2016, they threatened to pull money three different times. I feel they were just ready to let the seat go, because of our contentious relationship. Maybe they feel they can cut their losses on this one, and gain another seat. So they can recoup what they’re going to lose here.

“I think they figure they can get enough representatives and senators to rise up against me, call me to resign,” Long said. “I’m not going anywhere. I was hired by the people to represent the people. I’m going to continue to represent the people.

If they decide to vote me out, then that’s up to them.”

Long says HRO wanted him out Long believes the complaints against him stem from his contentious relationship with the House Republican Organization.

“These are trumped up charges,” Long said.

He said the conflict dates back to 2014 when he lost in a close race to long-time Democratic state Rep. Frank Mautino.

The Compassionate Friends will host Walk to Remember on Sept. 30 PERU — The River Valley Chapter of The Compassionate Friends invites bereaved parents, siblings, relatives and friends to join them at their Walk to Remember on Sunday, Sept. 30, at the east end of Baker Lake in Peru.

The cost to walk once around the lake is $10, and under 10 are free.

Refreshments, along with raffles, are also planned. Pre-registration starts at 9 a.m.

The Compassionate Friends is a support group for parents and grandparents who have experienced the death of a child of any age and any cause. As the world’s largest self-help bereavement organization, The Compassionate Friends offers friendship, understanding, and hope to families that have experienced the death of a child. There are more than 600 chapters in the United States.

“You do not need to be a member of The Compassionate Friends to join with us, and you do not need to walk around the lake,” said Rita Studzinski, chapter leader. “We welcome everyone who wants to

join hands and hearts in remembering all children who have died too soon.”

Pets provide much joy to their owners, who are often willing to do whatever it takes in an effort to reciprocate the unconditional love they get from their pets.

While toys and treats make pets happy, one of the best things pet owners can do to express their love for their four-legged friends is to make an effort to be more eco-friendly in regard to caring for their furry, finned or feathered friends.

An eco-friendly approach to pet ownership can protect pets’ health and the planet at the same time. Pet owners may be surprised to learn just how easy it can be to incorporate eco-friendly practices into their pet care routines.

• Avoid using pesticides in the yard. The Pesticide Action Network notes that pets can absorb pesticides through their mouths, noses and eyes when walking through lawns and gardens that were treated with pesticides. Powdered pesticides also may stick to pets’ fur, and dogs may absorb chemical residues by chewing or eating plants that were treated with pesticides.

Because of their grooming habits, cats allowed to roam free in yards may be especially vulnerable to lawns treated with pesticides.

When tending to their lawns, pet owners who want to be more eco-friendly can embrace organic lawn care practices, such as composting and using organic fertilizers.

• Be mindful of waste and waste cleanup. The feces of dogs contain bacteria that, if left on lawns and/ or walkways, can ultimately find its

Ron and Sandy Greening Memorial Agriculture Scholarship established Scholarship will be awarded to LaSalle County sophomore OGLESBY — A rural Oglesby couple’s love of farming and raising cattle will be memorialized in a scholarship established recently with the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation.

The Ron and Sandy Greening Memorial Agriculture Scholarship is the result of a $2,000 gift from their children, Bonnie Jasiek and Richard Greening, both of Oglesby.

The annual $500 scholarship will be awarded to a LaSalle County sophomore planning a career in the ag industry.

Ron and Sandy raised Polled Hereford cattle, boarded horses and bred registered appaloosa horses on a small farm outside Oglesby.

A self-employed carpenter, Ron was also a beef and grain farmer “and very proud to be a part of that

industry,” said Jasiek. He worked previously at Marquette Cement and Bakelite/Union Carbide. An Eagle Scout, Ron served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1955 to 1957.

Both he and Sandy were avid fly and pan fishermen who loved doing both on vacations to Minocqua, Wis. The former Sandy Whitaker worked as a quality control inspector at Badge-a-Minit in Oglesby but her first love was working on the farm with Ron, whom she married Dec. 23, 1955. Sandy died at age 76 in 2012, and Ron died at 83 in August 2017.

“This is a beautiful and fitting way to honor the Greening’s meaningful lives,” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran. “Bonnie and Richard’s generosity will help ag students realize dreams similar to their parents.”
