Parking lot an all-volunteer project

Improvements cover buildings and grounds, as well as student support

BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — A number of beneficial changes have occurred at Tonica Grade School, and according to Superintendent/Principal Chuck Schneider, more can be expected.

The most noticeable improvement is seen when first approaching the school. The previously long, narrow parking area has been widened to improve accessibility.

Jointly funded through the school district and the Tonica Parent-Teacher Council, the all-volunteer project was led by Al Leffelman, Dusty Freeman and Jeremy Hillyer, along with several others who assisted the day the concrete was poured.

Also helping Leffelman, Freeman, Hillyer and Ray Goodwin as they prepared the area was Tonica sixth-grader Gus Leffelman. Companies that either donated materials, provided them at a discount or provided use of their equipment were Advanced Asphalt, Mertel Gravel, River Stone Group, C&H Electric and Construction and Golden Rule Lumber.

Schneider said the benefits of the project were quickly seen during the open house and during student pickup at dismissal. Another benefit of the extension will be the reduction of ruts in the grass that resulted from past overflow parking.

“We’re very fortunate to have parents willing to volunteer, companies that support projects, and booster organizations that join us in making TGS a great school,” Chuck Schneider said.

T h i s School improvement came about through the volunteerism of a Tonica graduate working toward his promotion to Eagle Scout. Boy Scout Brice Fundell, who graduated in 2017, led the project and was assisted by other members of his troop.

Fundell designed the structure, worked with an engineer on the official plans, secured materials, coordinated the volunteers and also scheduled the build days. Schneider said there are plans to have a dedication ceremony.

Schneider also said the district is preparing for the second phase of health and life safety projects, which will get underway next summer.

“We’re at the beginning stages of prioritizing the elements that will be included. Phase one addressed worn-out heating system pipes, abating asbestos in the boiler room and insulating all the piping under the building. Phase two will look at a section of roofing, internal fire doors, a few exit doors and other items,” he said.

Academic improvements In October, the school will roll out an updated schoolwide academic support program for students. The Response to Intervention (RTI) prog ram, which

is already in use at many other area schools, is a process where students are identified through various assessments to receive interventions to build skills that are needing improvement or to expand on ones they do well.

“In the past we’ve focused interventions mainly on students who weren’t quite at grade level curriculum for literacy and/or math. This year, we’re going to provide supports and interventions to all students, which includes students who are identified as gifted,” Schneider said.

A block of time will be dedicated several days a week to provide this academic support. Student progress will be monitored along the way so educators can make adjustments and modifications to each student’s individual RTI program.

“TGS is proud to have such a dedicated staff to design and develop this process from the ground up with a focus on the needs of all students,” Schneider added.

Coaches needed Tonica Grade School is seeking coaches for cheerleading, and the boys and girls track teams.

“Coaching is sharing of a skill that you’d like to pass on to others to help them improve. You work with a great set of students here at TGS and also learn as well. There’s a quote attributed to several people, but not pinned to actually who said it: ‘The purpose of life is to discover your gift, the meaning of life is to give your gift away.’ Coaching very much fits into this statement,” Schneider said.

New water tower coming soon to Lostant Additional projects might be on horizon

BY STEVE LUNGER Shaw Media LOSTANT — Foundation work for a new water tower is scheduled to begin Oct. 14 in Lostant, village president Jack Immel told the Lostant Village Board on Sept. 9.

He said the foundation will be

ready by mid-November. The tower is expected to be up by mid-January and should be operational mid-summer.

Immel said the new tower will increase water pressure around town, so its operation will be “feathered-in.”

Disconnection and deconstruction of the old tower will take place after the new tower is functioning properly.

Immel asked the board to consider the color to paint the new tower,

taking into consideration the durability and appearance of the colors chosen over time.

Though the village will need to raise approximately $350,000 through bonds to cover the village’s portion of related tower costs, Immel expressed confidence in the ability to manage the anticipated $1,800 monthly payments for the 25-year term the bond repayment schedule will require.

TONICA — Tonica Volunteer Fire Department Firefighter/EMT Stephen Ebener has been certified by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office as a basic operations firefighter.

The required trainings were conducted by certified instructors of MABAS Division 25. Ebener was one of 22 candidates from the Oglesby, Grand Ridge, Newark, Seneca, Spring Valley, Tonica, Wallace, Troy Grove, LaSalle and Utica fire departments who put in many individual classroom hours, hands-on training, practicals and state testing over a five-month period.

The Lostant Village Board on Sept. 9 learned people are now living where a business once had been at a commercial property on Main Street, near First Street.

That’s a violation of the commercial district ordinance that prohibits residential use of first-floor commercial property along the west side of Main Street, between First and Fourth streets, and the property

Two-vehicle accident At 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 29, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department was called to a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of North 20th Road and Route 251. Emergency responders found two vehicles in the roadway with side and front end damage. Tonica responded with an ambulance and rescue truck. LaSalle ambulance was called for mutual aid and transported one

Leland Decker, maintenance worker, received an inquiry from a property owner as to whether a permit would be necessary to place a cargo storage container on their grounds.

The owner shall be notified that such a placement would not be acceptable to the board. The village plans to formulate and adopt an ordinance prohibiting such activities.

This quilt will be raffled, with the proceeds to benefit LaSalle and Grundy County women in need of mammograms and pap smears and who don’t fall under the guidelines of the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program.

Tickets for the quilt are available at the health department and are $1

The goal of this program is to reduce mortality from breast and cervical cancer by offering screening services such as mammograms and pap smears.

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois 4-H Foundation annually recognizes 4-H volunteers for exemplary service. The 2019 Hall of Fame class includes 80 new inductees who were honored during a recent at the Illinois State Fair in Springfield.

Included in the new inductees was Karen Pillion of LaSalle County.

“These volunteers fully embody what 4-H strives to instill in youth,” said Angie Barnard, Illinois 4-H Foundation executive director.

The Illinois 4-H Foundation established the statewide Hall of Fame in 2004 to honor and celebrate extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion.

“As a result of these volunteers’ years of service and leadership to Illinois 4-H,” Barnard said, “the program they love will continue to create wonderful opportunities for the young people whose lives it touches.”

‘Broadway Backwards’ will be presented Oct. 26-27 at IVCC OGLESBY — A musical revue with a major twist will kick off Illinois Valley Community College Theatre’s fall season, when “Broadway Backwards” takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 26, and Sunday, Oct. 27.

“Broadway Backwards” is a new type of entertainment that has recently become a popular and unique showcase for stage talent.

Originating on Broadway as part of Broadway Cares, a philanthropic Actors Equity fund, it was presented as a one-night-only fundraiser featuring Broadway performers.

Director and choreographer of musical theatre at IVCC, Don Grant Zellmer, explained, “We’re following the original format of ‘Broadway Backwards,’ a revue in which women perform Broadway songs written and performed by men, and men perform the women’s songs.”

ni, as well as performing arts students.

Elks to sponsor free orthopedic clinic for children

PERU — Mendota Elks Lodge 1212 and Oglesby Elks Lodge 2360, in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation, will sponsor a free children’s orthopedic assessment clinic on Thursday, Oct. 3.

The clinic will be open from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. and is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Illinois Elks Children’s Care office at 800-272-0074 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will be no charges for any services during the clinic.

The clinic will be held at Illinois Valley Community Hospital, 925 West St. in Peru, on the first floor, across from the X-ray department. Participants should enter the hospital from either the lower level on the south side, or the main level on the west side. Dr. Richard Erickson of Carol Stream will be the clinician in charge.

No medical referral is necessary, but physicians are welcome to refer patients for a specific reason or second opinion. School nurses are also welcome to refer children and families to the clinic.

Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal.
