Board OKs five more solar farms

BY DAN CHURNEY Shaw Media OTTAWA — The LaSalle County Board approved several more electricity-generating solar farm proposals Monday.

The five farms would be on East Eighth Road in Vermilion Township, East 17th Road in Earl Township, and East Seventh Road in Richland Township, as well as U.S. Route 34 in Mendota Township and North 46th Road in Meriden Township.

Brian Gift, of the County Development, Environmental Services and Land Use Office, noted the proposed farms also need state approval to come into being.

There were several votes against approving the farms. The County Zoning Board of Appeals, which reviewed the proposals before the proposals went before the County Board, recommended the County Board not approve the farms.

Earlier this year, the board signed

off on several other solar projects in other parts of the county.

Zoning Board and County Board members who have voted against the solar farms have said they don’t like cropland being taken out of cultivation.

The boom in solar farms is spurred by a law that took effect last year, requiring Illinois utilities to get 25 percent of their power for retail sale from renewable sources, such as solar and wind, by 2025.

TIF District prolonged

The County Board also agreed with Utica to extend Utica’s tax increment financing district another 12 years. The district was established in 1995. The additional period was added because there are a number of private development and public improvement projects that need to be finished, especially the new Waltham Elementary School, said County Board Chairman Jerry Hicks.

The district was originally set for 23 years.

The TIF district also includes LaSalle, but the county and that city are still negotiating terms of the district.

Nursing home

The board raised the daily housing rates at the county nursing home, effective Jan. 1. A private room goes from $157 to $162, and semi-private from $147 to $152, and expanded semi-private and rehabilitation suites are both going from $150 to $155.

Debris dump gets nod

The board approved the establishment of a clean construction and demolition debris dump on 107 acres at Utica’s southern edge, near Route 178 and North 27th Road. The site will be run by LaFarge Aggregates Illinois Inc. The zoning board had recommended the dump by a vote of 6-0.

Henderson’s murder trial set for December Concealment charges dropped

County road on Jan. 27.

Henderson was taken into custody on Feb. 5 after investigators linked him to Bradley through interviews, surveillance footage and cell phone data.

He was initially charged with the Class 3 felony of concealment of a homicidal death and was being held

on a $1 million bond. Public Defender Roger Bolin successfully got that charge dropped during a Sept. 6 status hearing.

Bolin has argued the 120-day limit of the Speedy Trial Act has been exceeded, and Putnam County State’s Attorney Christina Judd-Mennie agreed to drop the charge to focus on the murder charges.

The three additional felony murder charges entered on Aug. 30 each carry concurrent $1 million bonds with 10 percent to apply. Henderson has entered pleas of not guilty on all counts and will decide whether to have a bench or jury trial at a Sept.

FIRE REPORTS TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT Car fire on I-39 At 8:15 p.m. on Aug. 31, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department responded to a car fire located on Interstate 39, south of Tonica. Firefighters found a car on the side of the southbound lanes totally involved in fire. The occupants of the car were out of the vehicle and uninjured.

Tonica responded with a pumper, pumper-tanker and a rescue truck. The Illinois State Police assisted with traffic control and incident investigation, and Tonica firefighters cleared the scene in about an hour.

Firefighters respond to 16 calls in August According to Tonica Volunteer Fire

Department (TVFD) Chief Al Stremlau, the department responded 16 emergency calls during the month of August, raising the year-to-date number of calls to 124.

The calls included one residential structure fire, one vehicle fire, seven ambulance requests, four accidents, one law enforcement assist, one mutual-aid Haz-Mat Team activation, and one automatic alarm investigation.

Training included a review of all truck equipment. Five members completed their CPR refresher training, and firefighter Roland Nass completed his new member orientation with Chief Stremlau, as well as a Life-Flight helicopter safety course.

Two-vehicle accident At 3:45 p.m. on Sept. 6, deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of East 12th Road and Route 18 in Eagle Township. A vehicle driven

by Linda Raymond, 61, of Streator was southbound on East 12th Road. Proceeding through the intersection, she was struck by the eastbound vehicle of Keilevershon Horton, 21, of Ottawa. Raymond, Horton and Horton’s passenger, David Guthrie, 21, of Ottawa were not injured. A passenger in Raymond’s vehicle, Tracy Cockream, 40, of Streator was transported to OSF Hospital in Streator by AMT EMS with minor injuries. Horton was cited for disobeying a traffic control device.

Single-vehicle accident At 8 p.m. on Sept. 2, deputies investigated a single-vehicle accident at Route 18 and Meridian Road in Hope Township. Mary Seavoy, 58, of Elmhurst was eastbound on Route 18 when a deer entered the roadway and she was unable to avoid striking it. No injuries were reported, and no citations were issued.

IVSO announces its 2018-19 season OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra Board President Andrea Kowalski has announced the IVSO 2018-19 concert season.

After beloved conductor Lucia Matos retired in May, a search committee was formed to find the next season’s maestro.

Sabbatical in Germany

It started with reading The English and German professor started at the college in 1968 as an English instructor after getting his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University and teaching English in the Peace Corps while in Turkey, where he also learned Turkish.

He said a love of reading stories at a young age, such as Mark Twain’s “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” and history books, steered him toward a career teaching English and literature.

Eventually he grew to appreciate the works of authors such as Jane Austen, William Shakespeare, C.S. Lewis and William Faulkner. He appreciates the way in which he can

Michael then began teaching German at the college in the 1970s and became the college’s first professor to take a sabbatical when he went to Mainz in West Germany to receive his master’s in German.

He said the experience of being swept up and surrounded by the language was inspiring, and he was always interested in teaching German.

“A lot of people think German is a harsh sounding language and, well, it can be harsh, but it’s never seemed that way to me,” Michael said. “It depends more on the person speaking than the particular language you’re speaking.

“I think people talk about French as so mellifluous and Italian, and that’s true, but German can be too,” he added. “I think that’s the stereotype of the Germans as Nazis or (as they’re shown) on ‘Hogan’s Heroes’ and all that.”

He added the German and English are “like cousins” in that a lot of the basic vocabulary is recognizable such as summer being “Sommer” in German and beer being “bier.”

He also brought back everyday items from Germany to show in the classroom such as a familiar food or magazine.

“Now I’m trying to get rid of it all, but back then it wasn’t so easy to access things in Germany,” he said.

Michael noted the introduction of computers to the school as being one of the most noticeable chang-

He looked through his office that he shares with another teacher and believes he’s cleaned most of it out.

He said some “remnants” still remain, such as a large German encyclopedia in his bookcase and German magazines by his desk, but he hopes to leave something behind for the next instructor.

He hasn’t ruled out a future trip to Germany, but most of his future travels will be between Aurora and Peoria to visit grandchildren as well as to Oglesby Union Church with his wife.

And while his trips to the college will become fewer, he still expects to head over on occasion to meet with his friends and former co-workers at the college. Just don’t expect him to take his car.

OGLESBY — A light rain fell upon Jim Michael, 78, as he biked to Illinois Valley Community College on a recent morning.

Protected by a red rain jacket and St. Louis Cardinals baseball cap, it didn’t bother him much. He’s taken the 3-mile bike ride from his home in Oglesby just about every day of his 50-year career at the college, but his recent ride will likely be one of his last visits as he cleans his office and prepares for retirement.

Michael said it takes much stronger weather to get him in a car rather than on a bike seat.

“It’s very satisfying to get somewhere on your own power, I think,” he said.

He remembers some professors were less inclined to adapt to the new technology, but it has since improved the resources available for language learning so that students can easily view similar items online or even take virtual tours of Germany.

But nothing quite compares to an in-person visit to the country.

When asked how many times he’s since visited Germany, he’s hesitant to give a firm number and decides that it has to have been a least a dozen visits with an estimated three years being spent in the country.
