HENNEPIN — Two years to the day of Deborah Dewey’s disappearance, her family received the long-awaited justice for which they’d been waiting.

Clifford A. “Skip” Andersen Jr. was sentenced Aug. 23 to 60 years in prison for the murder of Dewey, his sister-in-law.

“And you will serve every day and every hour of it, as long as you are alive,” Judge Stephen A. Kouri told Andersen.

Andersen, 68, of Standard, was also found Clifford guilty concealment Andersen Jr. of a homicidal death during his two-week trial in July. He received an additional concurrent sentence of five years in prison for that crime.

Dewey, 62, of Ladd was reported missing Aug. 23, 2016. Her body was found Sept. 12, 2016, by Illinois State Police investigators at a house in Standard for which Andersen was caretaker and only blocks from his home.

At the start of the sentencing hearing, defense attorney Drew Parker, of Peoria, entered a motion for a new trial based on several points, including spousal privilege.

Prosecutor Bill Elward argued that all of Parker’s points had been litigated during the trial. Kouri denied the defense motion.

Two of Dewey’s family members then read impact statements to the court. Dewey’s niece, Susie Marshall, read a statement saying that what Andersen had done was “unconscionable” and that his actions had not only caused the family to lose Dewey, but also another sister, Diane, Andersen’s wife.

Dewey’s nephew, Roberto Guiliano, told Andersen he hoped his punishment was “lengthy and arduous.”

The prosecution requested the maximum sentence, with Elward saying Andersen’s crime was “brutal and heinous” because Dewey had trusted and loved him.

“Today, the bill comes due for your actions,” he said to Andersen.

Parker told the court Dewey and Andersen had been like brother and sister. He then described Andersen as a good-natured and good-hearted father figure who was “a protector of the weak.”

He then said the death of Andersen’s Deborah son years before, as well as post-traumatic Dewey stress disorder from his military experience, had been traumatic to his psyche. “Something happened to his brain,” Parker said.

Kouri then offered Andersen his chance to make his allocution.

Andersen then began to loudly and defiantly defend himself.

“I’ve heard so much that’s not real,” he said before arguing against family members and the accuracy of the video evidence, as well continuing into a rambling accusation against the truck-stop waitresses who testified about his behavior and gambling habits.

“I don’t like bullies, and I would never hurt a woman,” he continued.

He also said someone else had com-

mitted the murder and had buried her where she was found in order to make him “look bad.”

Before announcing his sentence, Kouri commended both the defense and the prosecution for their efficient work together.

He also praised the family for their quick action following Dewey’s disappearance, saying it was helpful in “solving a horrific crime.” He also praised the patience they displayed during the lengthy legal process.

As he delivered the sentence, Kouri said at one time Andersen was a hero.

“Two Purple Hearts, a Silver Star and a Bronze Star, at one point you were a hero, but that doesn’t alter what you’ve become,” he told Andersen.

He then said that among murders, Dewey’s was one of the worst.

“Most of the gruesome and horrific autopsy photos were held back during the trial, but now is the time for their consideration,” Kouri said while looking at Andersen.

Following the issuance of the sentence, Parker announced a cousin of Andersen’s had been paying his legal expenses, but was no longer able to do so.

He then reported the withdrawal of his law firm’s services and referred Andersen to a public defender for his appeal.

ROBERT ASHLEY SR. TONICA — Robert James Ashley Sr., 90, of Tonica died peacefully at home on Sunday, Aug. 26, 2018, after a oneyear battle with lung cancer.

He was born in Spring Valley on Jan. 15, 1928, to Howard and Frances (Wise) Ashley. He married Emma Lou Walling on Oct. 8, 1950.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War for two years. After his time in the in Army, he farmed with his brother Jack. He was the owner of Ashley’s Arts, Craft and Rock Shop. He drove the school bus for Tonica for 10 years.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He was also a Mason and had been a Cub Scout leader for over 20 years. He was a member of the Tonica American Legion, where he served as sergeant at arms, and was the secretary for the Tonica Telephone Board over 20 years. He was also an All-American Farmer through the FFA. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and flying. He also would sew quilt tops for his church. For the last 28 years, he and Emma Lou enjoyed wintering at Saddlebag Lake Resort in Lake Wales, Fla. He is survived by his wife, Emma Lou of Tonica; five sons, Robert (Karen) Ashley Jr. of Tonica, William

(Charlene) Ashley of Maggie Valley, N.C., Ronald (Judy) Ashley of Perryburg, Ohio, Donald (Sue) Ashley of LaSalle and Gary Ashley of LaSalle; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one brother, Jack (Rita) Ashley of Tonica; and one sister, Elizabeth Ann Ashley of Port Angeles, Wash.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Jean Nichols.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 30, in Immanuel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Helgren officiating. Burial was in the old cemetery in Tonica, with full military services conducted by the Tonica American Legion.

Visitation was held prior to the services in the church.

Pallbearers were his sons and two grandsons, Jeremey and Andrew Ashley.

Memorials may be directed toward IVCH Hospice or the Tonica Ambulance and Fire Department.

TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT Motorcycle accident At 11:25 p.m. on Aug. 24, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department responded to a motorcycle accident near 2278 Route 178. Responders found a motorcycle off the road with one person injured. The male rider was treated

and transported to IVCH with non-life threatening injuries.

The LaSalle County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control and accident investigation. Tonica responded with an ambulance and rescue truck and cleared the scene in about an hour.

Balanced budget reviewed by school board members District not inclined to sell portion of girls’ softball field

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — The Lostant School Board reviewed the district’s budget as a step in preparation for the coming year and has found that its finances look promising.

“We have a balanced budget with a little bit of surplus,” Superintendent Sandra Malahy said.

“More revenue than I plan on spending in expenditures.”

She described the financial situation as being “always a good way to start.”

The district’s recent preliminary audit found no major issues.

“Preliminarily, they said everything looks good,” Malahy said of the findings.

The results did lead, however, to some changes in what the levy will look like. The district is expected to levy nothing in IMRF, opting instead to beef up Social Security.

One developing situation the district is watching involves Illinois Senate Bill 2892, which would increase the minimum salary rate for teachers.

“Personally, I’m not opposed to

paying our teachers more. I’d love to pay our teachers more,” said Board President Mike Phillips. “The problem is, we don’t get enough funding for it from the state.

School The bill was sent to the governor on June 28, after which he has a 60-day period to sign or veto it before it automatically becomes law. As of last week’s school board meeting, no action had been taken.

In other discussion, the district has received an offer to buy the unused portion of the girls’ softball field, but has decided not to sell at this time.

“I think, for the district, you keep it together. You sell it all rather than subdivide it,” said Bob Lawless, board vice president, suggesting that the whole area of land would be worth more if the district ever did need to sell. He also suggested that such an act should go to the district for a vote.

Malahy agreed with the general sentiment.

“My first reaction is do not sell the property unless we need to or have good reason to sell both parts at the same time,” she said.

LASALLE — The LaSalle Public Library will host actor and historian Terry Lynch at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18. He will present “Oh Humanity! The Hindenburg Disaster.”

In this unique and informative program, Lynch, nationally known actor who specializes in historical portrayal, will take on the persona of WLS reporter Herb Morrison. On May 6, 1937, Morrison was sent to Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey to cover the first anniversary of transatlantic passenger service. What he witnessed that day turned out to be one of the greatest disasters of the 20th century. Lynch, as Morrison, will explain the historical significance of the dirigible Hindenburg, as well as recount the horrific details of that day.

Lynch has performed numerous library and historical society events nationwide for over 10 years. He has also been a frequent contributor to WGN Morning Show. All programs are researched by Laura Lynch, a certified educator and member of “Who’s Who in American Education,” and “Who’s Who in Young American Professionals.”

This program is free, open to the public and is made possible through funding by the Alwin C. Carus Trust. The library is located at 305 Marquette in LaSalle.
