Parking expansion project expected to begin soon at Tonica Grade School

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Tonica Grade School’s parking expansion project is expected to begin shortly, with the area to be dug out at the beginning of August.

“It might be dug out a week or two before concrete actually goes in,” said board president Al Leffelman.

The project is to utilize volunteer work, which will significantly reduce costs, leaving the cost of materials, which the district is splitting with the PTC. “The materials are going to cost about $14,000,” said Principal-Superintendent Chuck Schneider.

“We’re splitting that half and half with the PTC.” It is expected that this work will not interfere with registration.

Fur ther work to the school involves insulation repair in the boiler room, following a valve burst, in which the back of a meter blew out and sent a high-intensity stream cutting into some insulation.

TONICA — Tonica Grade School registration is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Wednesday, July 31, and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, in the school cafeteria.

Parents/guardians are reminded to bring proof of residence within the Tonica School District, which could be a valid identification or license with the correct address; registering child’s birth certificate; mortgage paper or the most recent property tax bill; and one of the following: a utility bill, vehicle registration card, vehicle insurance card or voter registration card. All documents must have the correct address on them.

The following health requirements are required for all students before the first day of school: Kindergarten — Physical and recommended immunizations, a dental exam and an eye exam.

Second-grade — Dental exam or waiver.

Sixth-grade — Physical, dental exam, tDap immunizations and meningococcal (MEN) immunization.

If a child will be participating in extracurricular sports, parents or guardians should be sure they have a current sports physical on file. If a child’s current sports physical will expire during the chosen sport, a new sports physical must be provided before the start of that sport.

ity ingredients and sanitation control informs the policy against homemade treats, the board determined it should be able to relax on requiring treats to be individually-wrapped, instead allowing bulk-packaged, store-bought treats.

Computers recovering from a ransomware attack

news@tonicanews.com LOSTANT — The Lostant School District is dealing with the fallout of a ransomware attack it endured recently.

The attacks occurred in late June, shortly before Nicholas McLaughlin’s start date as the district’s new

principal, but the effects are still being rectified, board of education members recently learned.

“I started creating the student accounts again today,” McLaughlin said at the school board meeting July 17.

“We lost all our files,” McLaughlin said. “Any files the teachers had are probably gone.”

The process has been helped along

by Superintendent Sandra Malahy’s diligent archival efforts, according to McLaughlin: “Thank God Dr. Malahy kept hard copies of everything,” he said.

“It’s been a time-consuming process, to say the least, but it should not happen again,” McLaughlin said.

With the certificate, massage therapists expand their practice into a deeper clinical focus within health care.

“The two required courses include all aspects of health care

throughout the lifespan and address advanced assessment of pathology, orthopedic conditions, professional development and specific massage therapy techniques for both acute and chronic conditions,” program coordinator Roxanne Cherpeske said.

Pastor Deepak Holkar revitalizes Tonica church and now serves Hennepin church, too

TONICA — The man serving God has traveled far, but his journey of faith has revitalized the congregation of the Tonica United Methodist Church, and now he hopes to do the same for the people of the Hennepin United Methodist Church.

Pastor Deepak Holkar was born in Jaysingpur, India, and both his father and grandfather worked with missionaries and cared for leprosy patients. His mother was a nurse, and after completing college, he followed her into the medical field with plans to become a doctor.

After completing his training, he relocated to Illinois in 2010 to be with his family who had moved here more than a decade before. While preparing for his exams and volunteering at Advocate BroMenn Medical Centre in Normal, he came to the realization this was not his true calling in life.

“I realized I did not have the spark inside me, the passion, for medicine. My mother has it, she’s retired, but she still has that interest, but I remember almost nothing of medicine now,” Holkar said.

Instead, he realized his true passion was leading him toward serving others and helping their faith in God grow.

His mother wouldn’t have been surprised with this change, however. When Holkar was 3 years old, his mother had a vision of him as a pastor praying for people. He used to deny this vision, but he’s now comfortable with his destiny and is fully committed to religious service.

He’s now a certified candidate with the United Methodist Church and is a second-year seminary student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston. He was appointed as Tonica’s pastor in 2018, and the community has embraced him.

Karen Steele, one of Tonica United Methodist Church’s many dedicated volunteers, said their new pastor has revitalized the small church and that apathy has been replaced by energy.

Holkar said his faith is fed by the dedication and commitment he sees the volunteers give to their church.

“They put in so much time and effort, they do so much, and they are unpaid. Someone would only

do this if they have a great love in their heart and that encourages me to help them however I can,” he said. “Every visitor to our church, whenever they have come, they have felt at peace. They may not be able to say what they’re feeling, but they know there is something.

That is the presence of God guiding them,” he said.

Holkar is also now sharing his faith and passion with the people of Hennepin. In July, he began serving as pastor to the Hennepin United Methodist Church. Each Sunday, he holds an early morning service in Hennepin before traveling back to Tonica for a late morning service.

To welcome the people of Hennepin into the fold, there will be a combined service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11. That morning, the congre-

gations of both churches will meet in the Tonica Park for a joint service followed by a potluck meal.

Holkar said his challenge now is to stay focused and to not get distracted. He said the Tonica congregation has journeyed closer to God, but added there’s still a distance to go.

But rather than being discouraged by the road ahead, Holkar advises his congregants to look back to see how far they’ve traveled and accomplished, and to be proud of their journey.

He was asked what his hopes were for the people of both Tonica and Hennepin. He said that by the time he leaves this area, he’d like to see them full of faith and “on fire for God.” “God is the same everywhere,” Holkar said.

The deadline to receive nominations is Friday, Aug. 2, according to Jim Dunn, editor and general manager of Illinois Valley Living.

“The Women of Distinction Awards luncheon has become a traditional highlight of autumn in the Illinois Valley,” Dunn said.

“We look forward to area residents putting forth another group of accomplished nominees for 2019.”

Women of Distinction was launched by Terri Simon, then-editor of Illinois Valley Living, and Sam Fisher, then publisher, and the staff of Illinois Valley Living in 2013.

The program continued in succeeding years, featuring nominees, an awards luncheon, speeches, and an overall positive get-together to recognize the achievements of nominated women across the Illinois Valley.

Free measles, mumps and rubella vaccination clinic set for July 31 OTTAWA — The LaSalle County Health Department will soon hold a free measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) mobile vaccination clinic.

This clinic is made possible through grant funding and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 31, in the Sullivan’s Foods parking lot located at 1102 Meriden St. in Mendota.

With measles continuing to rise across the United States, the health

department is taking action to prevent new cases and increase vaccination rates. The Centers for Disease Control recommends people get the MMR vaccine to protect against measles, mumps and rubella.

T he LaSalle County Health Department will administer this vaccine at no charge, with the goal to have residents fully immunized against vaccine preventable diseases.

The CDC recommends all children get two doses of MMR. Adults without evidence of immunity should get at least one dose of an MMR vaccine.

People aged 6 months or older who will be traveling internationally should be protected against measles.

Health care personnel without evidence of immunity should get two doses of MMR vaccine, sepa-

rated by at least 28 days. Women of childbearing age should check with their doctor to make sure they’re vaccinated before getting pregnant.

People are asked to please bring shot records (if available) on the day of the clinic.

Additional mobile clinics will be offered in LaSalle County in the coming weeks with locations and times to be announced.

PERU — Evan Knoblauch didn’t make it there physically, but boy, was his spirit ever present.

Hundreds of friends of the Knoblauch and St. Bede families turned out for “Evan’s Special Night” at the academy.

Original plans called to have Evan share the night with everyone, his wish to get under the Friday Night Lights one last time.

Upon his passing July 10 at age 20, after a two-year battle with Evan Ewing’s Sarcoma, the Knoblauch event turned into a celebration of a life taken much too young, much too soon.

As planned, a caravan of nearly 100 first-responder vehicles, including fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and the like, from all around the Illinois Valley, paraded down Route 6 to the entrance of St. Bede.

Leading the way was the engine from the Oglesby Fire Department for which Evan so proudly suited up for, a black ribbon and his helmet and uniform hanging from its front.

The silent reverence of flashing lights was breath-taking as the caravan proceeded down St. Bede lane with a multitude of observers paying their respects looking on.

Members of the neighboring Hall and LaSalle-Peru football teams walked in support of their brothers from St. Bede, holding “EK63” football signs.

The St. Bede class of 2017 came out

in force in honor of their lost classmate.

A fly-over from a Life Flight helicopter capped the first responders’ salute to their fallen comrade.

There were plenty of tears shed and laughs made as memories of Evan were shared.

Oglesby Fire Chief Ron Popurella announced that although Evan had not fully earned his certification, trying mightily in the midst of cancer treatments, the state fire marshal waived the final requirements.

He planned to present the certification to Evan the night of July 12, but said, “God had other plans.” Upon presenting the document to Evan’s parents, Jim and Sue, and his sister, Morgan, Popurella said, “Rest easy, Evan. We’ve got it from here.”

The flag football game went on as planned, just as Evan wanted to have, even though some of the former Bruins may have forgotten the “flag” part of it.

Classmate Bryant Eustice said it was the perfect night for the perfect teammate.

“It was so awesome to see everyone come together to honor and celebrate Evan’s life. I know for sure he was laughing his butt off up in heaven watching all the old guys play ball,” he said. “He was the epitome of the perfect teammate and never worried about himself. He also never backed down from a challenge, and what else could you ask for in a person? Evan is truly a blessing to everyone he knew.”

Bill Booker, who coached Evan in both baseball and football, called it “an unbelievable night of love and support for Evan and his entire family from the entire Illinois Valley.”

PERU — The Mendota Elks 1212 and Oglesby Elks 2360 Lodges, in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation, will sponsor a free children’s orthopedic assessment clinic on Thursday, Aug. 8.

The clinic will last from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Illinois Elks Children’s Care office at 800-272-0074 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are no charges for any services at this clinic.

Dr. Richard Erickson of Carol Stream will be the clinician in charge. The hours for the clinic will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

No medical referral is necessary, but physicians are welcome to refer patients for a specific reason, or a second opinion. School nurses are also welcome to refer children and families to the clinic.

The Elks Organization has been working with physically challenged children since 1928, and this is one of the 16 clinic locations throughout Illinois.

This is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development. If your child complains of back, knee, leg, or ankle pain, or who has feet pointing out, or a back curvature, they can be seen at this clinic.

The Elks will provide financial assistance to the best of their ability for children needing further treatment or specialty equipment when the family lacks sufficient resources to do so.
