NCIEDC marketing is making progress

OGLESBY — The North Central Illinois Economic Development Corporation (NCIEDC) has begun to harvest some of the results from their first year of globally marketing the assets of the Illinois Valley.

On June 27, the group held their inaugural meeting at IVCC to review the year’s work and to also look toward the future.

The goal of the NCIEDC is to efficiently promote the regional advantages in order to attract new growth and industry. This growth will then create new employment opportunities and added tax revenue which will help bring economic stability and prosperity to the area.

“The board has set the organization

on a path to development success. Strategic planning, teamwork and fiscal management assure the NCIEDC can meet the marketing objectives necessary for progress,” NCIEDC Chairman Jim Riley said.

NCIEDC President Ivan Baker presented information showing that 318 new jobs have been created in the tri-county area of Bureau, LaSalle and Putnam counties over the past 18 months.

Baker said both the labor force and population has grown recently in the Illinois Valley and the average household income has also increased, to $65,184. He also reported that unemployment and poverty rates have Photo contributed declined.

The Lostant Community Library has recently announced their upcoming summer events which will be providing a cool location for some family friendly entertainment.

At 5 p.m. on July 13, the library will be hosting a screening of the 2001 film “Spirited Away,” a new animated classic directed by acclaimed Director Hayao Miyazaki. After a young girl and her parents move into a new neighborhood, they unknowingly enter an amusement park which at first appears abandoned but is actually in the spirit realm. After her parents are turned into pigs, she meets a mysterious being who explains the park is a resort for supernatural beings. She is then told she must work there to help free her family.

“This year at the state level I was 120 points over the next closest guy. Another friend was in the flatbed division, and he missed first place by one point. At the national level, it’s very close. I was 11th last

“We had more new investors this year and always encourage area companies to join and support our aggressive economic development marketing effort,” Riley said.

He was also the highest scoring driver in his class for the inspection portion of the competition.

Fundell was also able to safely complete the driving portion of the championship in the shortest amount of time among his class.

Even though there are many facets to driving, especially professionally, Fundell said there’s one main thing which makes for a good driver.

“In my opinion, it’s about safety for anyone who takes their job seriously. The competition is a reward for safe driving. Safety is the first qualification; you have to be accident free for the past year leading up to the competition,” Fundell said.

Andrea Poole is the owner of the recently opened business at 199 Gooding St., LaSalle.

“I am my own customer. I have tried on all the clothes myself, so I can give customers a real honest opinion on them. I can tell them they fit because I have worn them,” she said.

Poole stocks junior sizes XL-6X and shoes 6 1/2 to 11. “We stress body positivity,” she added. “We also have nice quality jewelry and wide calf boots.”

Poole has been in retail management for years and decided she has the experience to run her own business when putting together all the jobs she has had over the years.

“I wanted to have my own store for plus-size women, so they can come into a store and feel comfortable because the items are just for us, not one small rack like other stores,” added Poole.

“Sixty-seven percent of women wear plus-sizes, but there is a huge disparity for plus-size people to wear clothes with what is available on the market,” indicated Poole, who grew up in Ottawa, but now lives in Lostant. “You don’t have to settle for what there is in other stores. You can get what you want here.”

Stop and smell the roses I think “Stop and smell the roses.” is one of those little sayings of life which has a lot of merit, but is all too often ignored. I’ve taken it to heart and regularly practice it.

Years ago, while performing a service call at a home with a beautiful rose bush, the saying occurred to me, and for some reason, I followed its instruction. Yes, Dave Cook I had plenty of work to do both there and COMMENTARY throughout the day, but the short pause I took to smell one of the blooms while appreciating its beauty was calming and rewarding.

Working at people’s homes provided endless trips through yards and gardens. I found slowing up to admire some natural beauty, rather than walking past it in a corporate rush, made me happier, more relaxed and even more productive.

In the mornings I began something which I still do today even though I’m in a totally different place and line of work. In the desert, mornings are pleasant until the sun rises high enough in the sky to begin its’ daily ritual of punishing heat. Before that happens though, the desert is full of pleasant and active beauty.

After climbing onto my first roof of the day to service air conditioning equipment, I made it a habit to stop and take a minute to appreciate my surroundings. The elevated position put me at the same level as the birds during their morning singing and also provided me with wonderful views of mountains, desert and other wildlife.

I’d look in every direction, enjoy the breeze and then close my eyes, take a deep breath and soak it all in. No matter what the rest of the day held in store, that short interlude was always pleasurable. I may not be on rooftops anymore, but I still enjoy the morning walk into the office and always stop for a moment to appreciate the day, no matter what the weather is like.

There it could be the intoxicating fragrance of citrus blossoms or the raw desert scent of blooms opening after a rain. Here, it’s lilacs that travel on the breeze.

In the desert it was the songs of the cactus wren or quail. Here it’s robins and cardinals. Either way, they’re all something worth stopping for and enjoying.

Life passes all too quickly and learning to take those short moments to disconnect and both notice and appreciate our world is nothing but beneficial.

I recently was fortunate enough to get a sneak peek at a new addition to the Dixon Wildlife Refuge south of Hennepin. I was there to cover a volunteer planting event at an almost 300-acre addition of sand prairie near the wetlands.

There was a lot of work to be done, and it was a sunny, warm day. After all the digging, planting and walking through the tall grass at the various planting sites, everyone was justifiably tired.

I was there for photos, and hiked along with everyone else through the tall grass to the various planting sites. Concentrating on getting up-close shots of the work, I now realize I’d given myself a bit of tunnel vision. I then left one group and began the journey to another on the other side of the preserve.

I was marching purposefully through the grass and over the hills with my head down, trying to step on as little as possible when I decided it was a good idea to take a breather.

I found myself standing alone in the middle of a rolling prairie filled with vibrantly yellow wildflowers and surrounded by scattered trees. I was hit with the full realization of its’ beauty and could look in every direction and see nothing of the world of man. It was so obvious the area is special and worthy of protection and care.

It wasn’t until stopping that I truly appreciated it.

And, even though I tried, no photo taken or anything online could provide an equal experience.

Whether it’s in your own yard, during an evening walk through the neighborhood, a visit to a park or even someplace you normally wouldn’t consider, stop for a moment, unplug from the demands of the modern world and appreciate something simple.

It could be the song of a bird, the antics of squirrels, the sight and scent of a flower, or the just the smell of rain or cut grass. Stop and smell the roses, it’s totally worth it.

Putting the break back in summer Ever since my kids became schoolaged, our summers have become a non-stop whirlwind of activity. It was a rare treat in the summer if we would get to stay at home all day without rushing off to go somewhere.

Whether it was baseball, softball, tennis lessons, swim lessons or the summer reading program at our local library, we were on the go the whole summer.

But this summer, that’s all changed.

It all started when my husband and I were told my son wouldn’t be able to play on a local baseball team this summer in our town. Our town had enough interest to field a team, but most of the towns around us didn’t have enough players for a house team because of the interest in travel teams these days. Kids would rather play travel teams than on house teams, it seems.

We were all really disappointed at first. My son has played baseball in the summers ever since he was 5 years old.

It had become something we really looked forward to each summer.

Not looking forward to disappointing him once we got the news, I borrowed an idea my friend had come up with when she was breaking the news to her own son.

I told my son the lack of baseball this summer would give him a good chance to have an old-fashioned summer like I used to have when I was his age. Back then, there were no scheduled activities for me. I played all summer, spent time daydreaming and using my imagination, swimming and reading. Basically, I did whatever I wanted to do, as long as my parents were fine with it.

ment about baseball only lasted an hour or so. Realizing we could cut even more activities out of our schedule to give both my kids more time off, I took a hard look at our upcoming activities.

In the span of an hour or so, we had decided to slash the summer reading program from our schedules, as well as the various sports camps we had been eyeing. All those programs and camps are great, but my son really wanted a more relaxed summer where he could play with his friends and spend less time in the car driving back and forth to activities.

By the time we were done, the only activity that hadn’t fallen by the wayside was my daughter’s softball team – there was no way she would ever give that up. But softball will wrap up by early July, so she’ll still have the chance to have a lot of play time as well.

My only rule for them this summer is that they have to stay active – both with their minds and bodies. While I don’t mind them having their computer time every day, I still expect them to read occasionally. The difference is that it will be because they want to, not because they have to reach their points quota to earn prizes at the library.

And they both know they have to exercise every day. But that exercise time isn’t structured, and they get to decide the activity, whether it’s swimming, shooting baskets, throwing the Frisbee or playing a set of tennis.

We’re only a few days in, but already

I’ve noticed a big difference. We all seem freer – we’re no longer slaves to our schedules, and we’re loving it.

My son just signed up for a 5K race that he wanted to run with me. We ran it shortly after his summer break began, and he did a great job, running the entire way. That’s something he might not have wanted to do this summer if he had felt the strain of his baseball schedule, coupled with all the other activities we had cleared off the calendar.

He’s been swimming three times in the first week of his summer break.

He’s roamed the neighborhood looking for kids to play with.

I’m excited to see what he’s going to do with all his time this summer. Will he be bored? Maybe.

But that’s not a bad thing – people act like bored is a dirty word these days.

I was bored plenty of times when I was growing up. I learned to fill that time by using my creativity because my parents certainly weren’t going to take time out of their schedules to manufacture activities for me. And they were right not to. I learned how to make my own fun – fun that didn’t cost a cent.

Kids shouldn’t be constantly entertained. They should learn to entertain themselves. If they don’t, they run the risk of becoming adults who have to be constantly entertained.

I’m hoping this relaxed summer will be as memorable for my kids as my summers were for me. At the very least, we’ll all get extra time together this summer. That’s worth more than all the homeruns in the world.

Stranded in Tonica: A shout out to Bill To the Editor, A couple of weeks ago we were going to go camping at Starved Rock Park. As we approached the park, the transmission in our RV wouldn’t shift into overdrive.

When we got to our campsite, it wouldn’t shift into reverse. At that point we decided we needed to find a garage in the area to get the thing checked out. Thanks to Google Maps, we ended up in Tonica, at the intersection of Peru and Pontiac streets when the RV wouldn’t go any further. Bill’s Repair and Towing appeared to be a block up the street, so Dave walked up to talk to him.

It turned out that it was no longer the location of Bill’s shop, but his son was there and called Bill. After a few hours wait for AAA to approve Bill for towing us, during which time Bill’s son stayed and kept tabs on us, he came to check out our RV. It turned out the transmission was shot, and we wouldn’t be going anywhere in it. Being as it was after 6 p.m. on a Friday evening, any

chance of renting a car to get home was out of the question. Bill got us to his parking area, let us hook up to his electric, grill out in his parking lot, and spend the night while we waited for a ride back to Wisconsin.

I can’t begin to tell you what a load of stress was lifted from us by how accommodating and helpful Bill was to us. Not only did he stay open late to help us, he also went above and beyond any expectation. Rather than being stranded almost 150 miles from home wondering what we were going to do, we were treated with the hospitality only a small town can offer. Bill is definitely an asset to have in any community.

So we wanted to give a shout out to say thank you to Bill! And also to thank the people that stopped to check on us while we were stranded at the intersection and while we were parked in Bill’s parking lot.

Obamacare or Trumpcare?

To the Editor,

Unless you’ve been on another planet, you know a battle is being waged on what America’s health care should look like: Who should be guaranteed coverage?

What at a bare minimum should be covered? Should sex, age, income or pre-existing conditions determine a person’s cost or coverage? Here are some numbers to highlight the gap between Obamacare and its proposed replacement Trumpcare.

The CBO (Congressional Budget Office) released a comparison between Obamacare and the senate version of Trumpcare. The CBO finds 22 million people who currently have health care will lose it by 2026, 15 million of those are on Medicaid. Many who keep coverage will pay more for less coverage. Compare that with what the Department of Health and Human Services said in January, if Obamacare was completely repealed and not replaced 30 million people would lose coverage. Simply put, Trumpcare will cover at best only 8 million more people than no plan at all.

At times the Trump administration has left the impression that the CBO is a partisan department with a political ax to grind. The person at the CBO charged with preparing this report is a Republican appointee who is on record as being against Obamacare, but

Trumpcare’s numbers just don’t add up.

Another troubling difference is how the poor are covered. Obamacare expanded Medicaid, in the stares that accepted it, which equalized coverage in all 50 states. Trumpcare requires each state to apply for block grants, giving the Trump administration the power to decide how much each state gets to provide care to its people. Trumpcare allows waivers to states to drop what’s covered or to charge more to pregnant women or people with pre-existing conditions.

The most insidious part of Trumpcare is how it will pit one state against another for necessary federal dollars. States with an aging population will be burdened more. Poorer states will be more beholden to the administration — all the while Trump’s hands are clean. All he has to do is tweet which states are being “mean” for waiving coverage they can no longer afford. He can politically punish any state including those that took the Medicaid expansion or any other slight he perceives. My only wish is that Trumpcare would provide as much medical protection to the American people as it will political protection to Donald Trump.

‘Charlie Brown’ auditions announced HENRY — River Valley Players has announced audition dates for its revival version of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!,” will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, and Sunday, July 9.

Those wishing to audition should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to start times and come prepared to sing an a cappella song of their choice. The songs should demonstrate vocal capabilities, and select portions of the script will also be read. While simple

dance steps are required, a formal dance audition will not be required. All interested persons, junior high and older, are welcome to audition.

World War 1 exhibit at Utica museum UTICA — The LaSalle County Historical Society announced a new exhibit at its Heritage Center Museum in Utica.

The new World War I exhibit commemorates the 100th anniversary of the United States declaring war on Germany. Museum visitors will learn of Ottawa native and Army Reservist Roswell T. Pettit, a field surgeon, and Henry Meyer of Mendota who fought in some of the most intense fighting by American troops during the spring

and early summer of 1918.

Also on display are uniforms and paraphernalia of both men and others from LaSalle County who played a part in that “War to End All Wars.”

University of Illinois ag dean visits IVCC OGLESBY — On June 12, Kimberlee Kidwell, dean of the University of Illinois’ (U of I) College of ACES, praised Illinois Valley Community College’s partnership with the U of I Extension for Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties headquartered at IVCC. “It is exciting to think about the possibilities we will create with IVCC to build a vibrant workforce pipeline in agriculture for the state of Illinois,” Kidwell said.

As part of her statewide tour of all Extension headquarters, Kidwell met with Extension County Director Jill Guynn and IVCC President Jerry Corcoran before visiting the new USDA SNAP-Ed (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) Community Kitchen in LaSalle, part of the Extension’s nutrition education and wellness program.

LASALLE — On Monday, July 10, at 2 p.m., the LaSalle Public Library will feature a video-recording of “Act One,” originally recorded at Lincoln Center Theater on Nov. 13, 2015.

Few have captured the magic of the theater better than Moss Hart, a poor kid from the Bronx, who became a lion of Broadway. “Act One,” is an adaption of Moss Hart’s autobiography of the same name. The play, narrated by the older Moss Hart, traces his life from being poor in the Bronx, to becoming famous and successful as a Broadway writer and director.

Lincoln Center Local, a program created by Lincoln Center brings the best of Lincoln Center— world-renowned performances — into communities anywhere, via high-definition video-recordings. Sun, solar eclipse family night LASALLE — On Tuesday, July 13, at 6 p.m., the LaSalle Public Library will host a science family night in preparation for the upcoming August solar eclipse.

Using hands-on experiments with UV sensitive beads, families will learn about the awesome power of the sun, and how to protect skin and eyes from damaging UV light.

Families will also learn how a solar eclipse occurs, and why a total solar eclipse is so special. If time permits, kids will make a UV sensitive wristband, or receive a wristband kit to make at home. Children and adults will receive certified eclipse safety glasses. This fun and fascinating family night is best for families with kids ages 6 and up, but everyone is welcome. Please note that the small beads may pose a safety hazard to young children. Children under the age of 8 must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

IVCC beginner volleyball camp rescheduled OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s beginner volleyball camps has been rescheduled. Campers will meet from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, July 28, and from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 29, and Sunday, July 30.

The camp focuses on player experience rather than a grade-based approach and covers basic skills such as serving, passing, setting, hitting, blocking, digging, serve receive and game strategies. The camp is an introduction to volleyball and is recommended for ages 8 to 12 and for those from basic middle school programs.

Camp is led by head coach Erin Polte and assisted by the IVCC volleyball team. Coach Polte has four years of personal coaching experience working with various ages and skill levels. Polte grew up in a volleyball environment, watching her mother coach her entire life.

She played competitively from the age of 12 to 22.

The $55 registration fee includes 7.5 hours of instruction, a T-shirt and certificate. Registration forms are available at www.ivcc.edu/athletics.
