Linda Tenopir’s family tried to shield her from Facebook on April 26.

News reports were released saying her stepsister’s murderer, Henry Hillenbrand, had been set free from prison on parole.

When she was finally told the news, she couldn’t hold back her tears.

“I lost it,” Tenopir said. “It brings back every single memory to 1970.”

Hillenbrand, 71, had been serving a 150-year and a 240-year sentence at Menard Correctional Center for the 1970 deaths of 22-year-old Vietnam veteran George Evans and Tenopir’s 19-year-old stepsister, Patricia Pence, both of Streator.

Hillenbrand was released from prison April 26.

He confessed to the murders. He snuck through a window and shot Evans in the head. Pence then locked herself in a bathroom, but Hillenbrand forced himself in, dragged her out and forced her into his car. When she tried to escape him, he shot her in the back, then four more times. He also crushed her head with his rifle stock.

The Prisoner Review Board voted 14-0 in favor of Hillenbrand’s parole.

According to documents, the board, after “reviewing all factors available at this time,” concluded Hillenbrand is a “good risk for parole.”

The news is a shock to Tenopir, who referred to Pence as her best friend.

“How did he even get out?” she asked from her Arizona home.

Even beyond the shock, Pence’s family has questions.

Delores Pence, another of Patricia’s sisters who lives in Streator, wants to know why her family wasn’t notified of the parole hearing. Her family has participated in every hearing, either by giving testimony or writing a letter.

“They never contacted us,” said

Statement from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and State’s Attorney’s Office regarding the release of Henry Hillenbrand At 3:47 p.m. on April 25, the Putnam County State’s Attorney’s Office received an email from the Illinois Department of Corrections concerning the release of Henry C. Hillenbrand to occur on April 26.

Included in this email notification, Hillenbrand’s offenses included two counts of murder. One sentence carried a term of 150 years and the second sentence carried a term of 240 years. These convictions occurred in LaSalle County. The email indicated Hillenbrand was moving to an address located on Silverspoon Avenue in Granville.

Having no background on Hillenbrand’s crimes and a notification of release for the next day gave the sheriff’s office and the state’s attorney’s office great concern due to the proximity of Hillenbrand’s pending address to the two schools in Granville.

Hillenbrand will have to register as a violent offender, which he did on April 29. However, state law doesn’t prevent Hillenbrand from living within 500 feet of a school.

The main concern of the sheriff’s office and the state’s attorney’s office is the safety of our residents and children who attend these schools.

It should be noted certain people have a misconception that the state’s attorney’s office and the sheriff’s office can prevent Hillenbrand from moving into our community. Unfortunately, due to no restrictions under state law, a person convicted of two murders cannot be prevented from moving into our community.

If citizens have concerns about the Illinois Department of Corrections inmates being released early, they are encouraged to contact members of the Illinois General Assembly.

“They used to contact us every time one was coming up until my dad passed. It’s been up to us to call when one is coming up, and last year, we gave them our address, our phone numbers. We made a prom-

ise to our mom and dad before they passed we would not give this up.”

The Times traded messages with the spokesman for the Illinois Prisoner Review Board, but was not able to speak with him prior to deadline.

On the agency’s website, it says victims and complaining witnesses can receive notice of a parole hearing by writing its office directly.

“This is the only way to receive notification of these hearings,” according to the website. “Signing up with victim’s services or other entities such as VINE currently does not mean you will receive notice of parole hearings.

You must contact our office. You must also keep our office updated with your current contact information to ensure notification.”

The Pence family was not alone in feeling taken off guard.

LaSalle County State’s Attorney Karen Donnelly said she wasn’t told of the upcoming hearing, and the Putnam County Sheriff ’s Office was notified one day in advance Hillenbrand was planning on moving to an address located on Silverspoon Avenue in Granville.

Both Delores Pence and Linda Tenopir have not slept well since the parole announcement.

Tenopir said she’s lived with the fear before, because Hillenbrand had escaped prior to his sentencing and lived in Missouri under an alias for 13 years. The fugitive was captured after bringing a bear hide into the United States from Canada and was returned to LaSalle County in May 1983.

She remembers Hillenbrand relayed threats through a relative when he escaped, including one that stuck with her: “Before this is over, you’ll all be dead.”

“I was constantly looking over my shoulder at night,” Tenopir said.

“I was always scared, always looking. Now I feel that way again. And I know he doesn’t like me. What’s going to stop him now? He’s broke out of the county jail once, and nobody found him. How will they keep track of him?”

Part of Hillenbrand’s parole orders are he’s not allowed to contact the family of the victims and he must register as a violent offender, which he did April 29. The Putnam County Sheriff ’s and State’s Attorney’s offices stated they were concerned about the proximity of him living close to two schools in Granville.

Judge rules County Board overstepped its bounds in barring her

Olson said he would sit down and talk to Wilkinson about how the auditor’s office will proceed moving forward. He said he doesn’t think she can bring back the two auditor employees, believing the County Board has an equal right to discipline them.

The employees’ attorney Todd Martin was at the hearing Thursday and didn’t comment on his clients’ status, only to say “we’ll see” in regard to future actions.

“I’m assuming we’ll go back to normal, except for the two employees will not be there,” Olson said.

LaSalle County State’s Attorney Karen Donnelly gave no comment after the May 2 hearing.

Wilkinson away from her office as a condition of her bond. Prosecutors said Wilkinson’s duties require frequent interaction with witnesses to her case, including one unnamed person who is a principal witness and could easily be intimidated.

Wilkinson also would have direct access to county payroll records that are subject to the charges against her, they argued.

In court May 2, Daugherity said evidence was already secured, and if Wilkinson tried to intimidate witnesses or tamper with her case, she could be charged for it, so he was not concerned.

Daugherity said his decision supercedes the bond condition.

Wilkinson was represented in the May 2 matter by Bureau County State’s Attorney Geno Caffarini, who accepted the court’s appointment to represent Wilkinson in civil matters of her case.

Dead birds are important sentinels for early detection of West Nile virus activity.

Over the past 17 years, West Nile virus activity has been documented throughout LaSalle County.

Below is the criteria to determine if a bird is eligible to submit for testing.

• The bird is dead, but the carcass is in good condition. Birds should be dead no more than about 48 hours prior to collection, and should not show signs of advanced decomposition (maggots, strong odor, dried or deflated eyes).

• The bird shows no sign it died of causes other than disease.

Birds with obvious injuries such as wounds or missing parts should not be submitted for testing. Like-

wise, crushed carcasses and birds found along roadways are not acceptable.

• The bird must be one acceptable for testing. At this time, the health department is only collecting crows, blue jays and robins.

As in past years, health department staff are preparing to begin testing mosquitoes for West Nile virus.

The collection and testing equipment was purchased with grant money that was also used to purchase a large quantity of mosquito larvicide. The larvicide is used to treat potential sites and

has been distributed to licensed mosquito control applicators from local municipalities and villages throughout the county.

Also, during the spring and summer months, health department staff extends outreach efforts to all city, municipal, village and township officials in the county.

Information on available educational brochures were distributed to local hospitals, medical centers, nursing homes, pharmacies, veterinary clinics, pet shelters, campgrounds, daycares, libraries and pool supply companies.

“Unfortunately, due to no restrictions under state law, a person convicted of two murders cannot be prevented from moving into our community,” the official said.

Documents in favor of his parole said Hillenbrand’s “faith had deepened, his work ethic strengthened, and he has worked every day to be the best person he can be and to try to atone for the horrible crime he committed so many years ago.”

The documents also stated he had a

strong plan and support group after he was released from prison.

He said his long-term goal is to move to Missouri and work in his son’s logging business.

Pence’s family described Hillenbrand as an evil person prior to the murders. He had violent episodes with Patricia prior to the murders, including one where she went to the police after he choked her.

The family is skeptical Hillenbrand has changed.

“I think he got one over on them,” Tenopir said of the Prisoner Review Board. She’s also convinced even if he has changed, he doesn’t deserve his freedom because of the grief and fear he’s caused, and still causes today.

“I understand his family is upset when they say they can’t see him,” said Tenopir, who mentioned Hillenbrand and Patricia also had a daughter together. “How do they think we feel? We have to go to the cemetery to visit our sister.”

LaSalle County Auditor Jody Wilkinson was allowed to return to work beginning May 3.

Judge Eugene P. Daugherity ruled May 2 the LaSalle County Board overstepped its bounds by barring Wilkinson from her elected office at its Oct. 2 meeting.

Wilkinson is charged with theft and misuse of government money.

Daugherity said there is no law or precedent for a county board to remove an elected official prior to due process of the law, which in this case, would be Wilkinson’s criminal

trial scheduled Monday, May 20.

The judge said Wilkinson has a presumption of innocence until her case is settled.

He said the county must return her keys, allow her back into her office, and ultimately return her status to the way it was prior to the County Board’s Oct. 2 vote.

The County Board barred and then fired auditor employees Tori Artman and Pamela Wright, also charged with theft, but Daugherity said his ruling Thursday is focused solely on Wilkinson, and he was not making any rulings in regard to the employees’ status.

Wilkinson g ave no comment after Thursday’s hearing, including on how she would handle the employee situation. County Board Chair man Jim Olson has said the county is looking to hire union employees to replace the auditor employees, and tempo-

TONICA VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT TVFD holds nozzle training exercise TONICA — The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department recently conducted training on a variety of firefighting nozzles.

Piercing Applicator A piercing applicator nozzle is designed to get water or foam into hidden trouble spots.

“Firefighters can use a sledge hammer to drive the piercing applicator nozzle through many different materials such as concrete block, car metals, mobile homes, metal sheds, attic areas, grain bins, and hay bales,” TVFD Officer Rick Turri said.

The driving butt and point are made of hardened steel with impinging jets for a dense fog pattern.

Distributor (Cellar) Nozzles The quickest and most efficient method of attacking a fire below is to advance the line down the stairs. But, in some cases, the intensity of the fire creates punishing conditions of high heat and heavy smoke.

The distributor, or cellar nozzle, is designed to be used under a surface that the firefighter is standing on. When their use is dictated, it is usually because of an inaccessible location or the intensity of a below-grade fire is preventing a direct attack. When needed, few things will work as effectively to knock down the fire below.

“A rotating distributor nozzle is designed to project water outward and upward, which helps suppress the fire, while protecting the floor where the fire crew is operating,” Turri said.

These nozzles can flow from 250 to 400 gpm. After a small hole is cut in the floor to gain access to the fire area, the device is inserted and the water started as soon as the nozzle is below floor level.

“Because its use is infrequent, all firefighters need to be familiar and proficient with operating distributor nozzle equipment. When that time comes, few other nozzles work as well on a fire below,” Turri said.

Water Shields The stable water curtain nozzle is for unmanned protection of threatened buildings, gaseous hazards or cooling situations. The water curtain needs to spray directly onto the exposure to be protected. It must be of sufficient size and capacity to

“A water curtain is a device used by firefighters to prevent fires from spreading from one building to the next when there is limited manpower, or conditions are too dangerous for a standard manned fire hose,” Turri said.

Master Streams A “master stream” is defined as a heavy-caliber stream delivered through a water delivery appliance. A master stream is used when a flow of more than 350 gpm is required to absorb the heat being generated by the fire. This amount is too difficult to be delivered from a handline operation because of nozzle reaction.

The master stream is usually a straight stream produced with a smooth bore tip, or some type of combination nozzle. There are three types of master stream operations: the fixed (deck gun), the portable (ground) and the elevated (aerial).

Master stream appliances are capable of water flows higher than 1,000 gpm.

Low Expansion Foam Applicator Nozzle This low-expansion nozzle has a fixed tube with little adjustment. “It produces a wet foam appropriate for many tactical applications, such as a hazardous material spill, fire attack and overhaul operations,” Turri said.

Foam is made by first mixing foam concentrate with water to create a one to six percent foam solution depending on the product involved in the fire.

This can be done via a variety of foam inductors.

Once the solution is made, it is then combined with air and agitated to create finished foam bubbles.

There are several commonly used methods of agitation, the most common of which is to pump foam solution out of a special fog nozzle. This allows agitation to occur while the product hits its target.

Aqueous Film-Forming Alcohol Resistant Foam Concentrates (AFFF-AR) provides a foam blanket that reduces vapor and supports the suppression of Class B hydrocarbon fuel fires.

According to TGS Coach Nick Heuser, the two girls’ relay teams (featuring Ficek, Liberty Gallik, KJ Gallik and Lauren Johnson) also ran well with third-place finishes in both their races.

The TGS boys team had one state qualifier — sixth-grader Phillip Gray, who competed in the seventh-grade long jump.

Heuser said there were many personal bests set at the meet, including the 4x100 relay team of Connor Fundell, Joshua Soria, Ethan Schmick and Gray.

IVCC Youth Basketball Camp OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball team will host its annual basketball camp Monday through Thursday, July 8-11, in the gym.

Camp for first- to fifth-graders is from 9 to 10:45 a.m.; sixth- through ninth-graders is from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.

Head Coach Chris Herman and his players will work with participants on fundamentals. Campers will participate in drills, stations and competitions designed to develop their individual shooting, passing, ball-handling and defensive abilities. “The camp is designed to not only improve each camper’s skills, but also provide a fun week of basketball,” Herman said.

State Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris) released the following statement after she voted no on the proposal: “I’ve said all along, my main concern with the graduated income tax proposal is the lack of protections in place to ensure that the rates won’t affect the middle class. When the government needs more money, which it will, eventually the middle class will be the ones footing the bill. In fact, the proposed graduated rates have already changed from what the governor proposed a few weeks ago.”

He said he agrees with the president’s decision to send more National Guard troops to the border, noting they help border patrols with logistical matters. He said the U.S.-Mexican border is reporting its highest amount of crossings.

Kinzinger supports building a wall as a boundary, because he said it will make it easier for border patrol to focus on smaller areas where drug cartels smuggle drugs into the U.S. He also supports reworking laws for asylum seekers.

“It’s a massive crisis,” he said.

Kinzinger endorsed Trump during a meeting with editors from Shaw Media newspapers prior

to the election, but he’s also been critical of the president’s Twitter comments. Additionally, Kinzinger was critical of colleagues during the federal shutdown.

In December, the 40-year-old Kinzinger was one of the Republicans mentioned by colleagues as a potential retiree. He told the New York Times: “I fully intend to run again,” but conceded he takes little pleasure in being asked to account for “every tweet, every comment” the president makes.

He told The Times in Ottawa he always likes to take some time to think about re-election as the filing date gets closer.

Kinzinger’s 16th House District includes Bureau, Putnam, LaSalle and Lee counties.

Illinois’ violence interruption programs save lives They should receive more tax dollars

T

he Chicago Police Department reported last week that the number of people murdered in the city fell 10 percent during the first four months of 2019 compared to last year during the same period.

While that’s good news and part of a two-year downward trend, lost in much of the coverage was a worrisome murder spike in the month of April.

The Chicago Sun-Times counted 62 Chicago homicides in April, up from 37 in April of last year and 48 in April 2017.

It’s too early to tell whether this is an aberration or a trend. The city’s mayor-elect, Lori Lightfoot, has been busily meeting with law enforcement officials over the past several days in an attempt to develop a plan before she takes office on May 20 and before summer starts, when street violence tends to increase as the weather warms.

Gov. J.B. Pritzker spent over a year on the campaign trail talking about his strong belief that violence is a public health issue. I happen to agree with him on this. We cannot police ourselves completely out of this problem.

COMMENTARY Rich Miller Violence often spreads like a disease, and research has shown when it’s treated as such, the contagion can be slowed or even halted.

As an integral part of treating violence as a public health issue, Pritzker touted his support for violence interruption programs, which do things like mediate conflicts between rival individuals and groups and try to prevent retaliations from spiraling out of control.

After then-Gov. Bruce Rauner blamed the city’s crime problem on the lack of jobs and even illegal immigrants, Pritzker countered during a debate last October by laying at least some of the blame at Rauner’s feet.

“Gun violence across the state of Illinois has gone up in the very same period that Gov. Rauner refused to compromise on a budget,” Pritzker said during the debate. “So many of the violence interruption services, human services that people have as their last vestige of connection with civilization, have gone away.”

Indeed, the General Assembly had appropriated $4.7 million for

violence interruption programs in Fiscal Year 2015, Rauner’s first year in office. But Gov. Rauner stopped spending that money and then nothing was appropriated for the following fiscal year, which began July 1.

Shootings spiked almost immediately.

In all of 2014, before Gov. Rauner took office, 415 people were murdered in Chicago. Rauner, who didn’t recognize the connection between violence and public health, was inaugurated in January 2015, and the number of murders rose to 468.

The city saw another huge increase in violence in 2016, with murders soaring to 750.

But violence prevention funding was mostly restored after taxes were raised over Rauner’s July 2017 veto.

The murder rate began to decline, dropping to 650.

Not all of this trend can be attributed to violence interruption services, of course. But the one Chicago community that managed to secure nonstate violence interruption funding in 2015 was the only one spared from that year’s bloody surge in killings.

On his first full day in office this past January, Gov. Pritzker told reporters he wanted to expand violence interruption programs.

“Those programs have been decimated across the state. And so we should be focusing on interrupting violence as much as possible,”

Pritzker said.

And as he approached his first 100 days in office, Pritzker told ABC 7’s Craig Wall: “The fact is violence interruption programs addressing the issues that prevent violence before it occurs, that’s the most effective thing that we can do.”

Pritzker also touted an increase in anti-violence funding during his February budget address. “This budget adds funds for community-based violence interruption,” he told lawmakers.

The governor never actually said how much he was proposing to add to the program, but it turns out his requested increase is a mere $2 million.

Every little bit helps, obviously, and nobody is complaining yet, but the money doesn’t appear to match the governor’s soaring rhetoric.

When I asked the administration why more wasn’t appropriated, I was told there just isn’t enough available state money to go around to fund all of the things the governor wants to do, ergo his push for a graduated income tax.

Pritzker is right that these programs work, and Chicago isn’t the only Illinois city that has benefited from them over the years. Somehow, we need to find a way to do more.

2020 presidential race might be Nixon-McGovern 2.0 Dems could lose big time if they choose the wrong candidate

PRINGFIELD — Back in 1972, I was in the second-grade at Bateman Elementary School in Galesburg, and our teacher, Mrs. Turner, had us studying that year’s presidential election.

Of course, we know how the story ended, President Richard Nixon was re-elected and resigned in disgrace two years later.

When you think about it, the 1972 election was one for Democrats to lose. Nixon barely won the office in 1968 when running against Hubert Humphrey, an establishment Democrat. His time in office

COMMENTARY Scott Reeder was marred by an ugly, unpopular war in Vietnam, there were riots in the streets and, let’s face it, Nixon wasn’t a particularly likable person.

He was a polarizing figure hated by many Democrats, prone to paranoia and not above lying to further his political ambitions. He earned the moniker “Tricky Dick” all on his own.

So how could Nixon, with all of those liabilities, carry 49 states in 1972? Well, Democratic primary voters chose a candidate who was perceived by many voters as being out of the mainstream. George

McGovern advocated the federal government giving every American $1,000 (about $6,000 in today’s dollars.) He also was one of only a dozen members of Congress who opposed American military involvement in Vietnam from the beginning. While today we might view his position as prophetic, in 1972 he was still viewed as too dovish to be commander in chief.

His nomination resulted in a landslide victory for Nixon.

As regular readers of this column know, I’m an advocate for lower taxes, less regulation and fewer barriers to trade. And I’d also like the idea of less government.

Most folks would call that conservative. But I won’t support someone of any political stripe who fails to display integrity.

And I can say with near certainty that Trump will not receive my

vote next year. Why? I don’t view him as an honorable man. Honorable men don’t cheat on their wives, lie with daily regularity or chose vulgar discourse over constructive debate.

Neither Donald Trump nor Hillary Clinton received my vote in 2016. Instead, I voted for a third-party candidate.

I am hoping that Democrats nominate a moderate candidate of integrity, who can appeal to a broad ideological spectrum of voters. Otherwise, we should expect a repeat of 1972.

And like 1972, it could mean the re-election of a deeply flawed man, who is far from guaranteed to have a scandal-free second term.

OGLESBY — The largest gift in Illinois Valley Community College’s 95-year history grew recently to $1.2 million as the college received an additional contribution from the estate of Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg.

Dr. Rose Marie Lynch, executor of the Weeg estate, presented IVCC President Jerry Corcoran with a check for $105,560, the remainder of the estate, to bring the final gift to more than $1.2 million.

Weeg, a longtime English instructor and humanities division chair, died April 19, 2015, at age 84. Following the first gift of $1.1 million in August 2017, the IVCC board named the college’s 600-seat auditorium the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.

The bequest has endowed Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Arts Scholarships, provided a major gift to the Scholarship Campaign of 2015-17, and will provide perpetual support for the Adult Education Department, Student Emergency Living Needs Fund and IVCC Foundation operations.

“This monumental and unprecedented gift from a beloved professor and academic leader has had a profound impact on our institution and will continue to do so for generations,” said Corcoran.

Lynch, who was hired by Weeg in 1970 to teach English and journalism at IVCC, said, “This bequest is a tangible legacy, but Mary Margaret’s true legacy is in the thousands of students, teachers and friends she inspired

OGLESBY — Alternatives and the Bridges Senior Center will host the first LaSalle County Caregiver Conference from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 1, at Illinois Valley Community College. This event will be free to the community.

The conference will feature two presentations: “Retirement Strategies — The Best Way To Plan For Retirement,” presented by Sandra Brown, senior retirement consultant; and “Effective Communication Strategies,” presented by Hadi Finerty, senior management of education and outreach for the Alzheimer’s Association.

The conference will also have multiple vendor tables that will all be related to the health and senior

field. A representative to answer questions about Medicare and Medicaid will also be available.

“A conference is a great place to start looking for resources in your community. Lots of vendors representing different services will be present. It also allows you to ask questions in an open format without feeling any kind of pressure to make a commitment,” Alternatives Associate Director Erin Hanna said.

Preregistration isn’t required as the form will be available at the event. Light breakfast fare will also be available at no cost to attendees.

SRRC Ball surpasses fundraising goal OTTAWA — The 10th annual Black & White Ball, in partnership with ONYX, was held Feb. 23 at Celebrations 150 and raised almost $10,000 more than the $50,000 goal for the Starved Rock Regional Center for Therapy and Child Development (SRRC).

Around 250 guests attended this popular annual event, which included dinner by Chef Charlie, dancing, a complimentary martini bar sponsored by TCI Manufacturing, music by the Illinois Valley Flute Ensemble, photos by Annette Barr, a live auction presented by Matthew Bullock Auctioneers, raffles, a silent auction and an introduction of the 2019 Ambassadors, Jack and Oliver Kinkin, as well as the presentation of several former Ambassadors.

The masquerade-themed event was planned by Jennifer Kirkman and assisted by Tony Einhaus, who provided decor and florist, Blythe Flowers, who donated the centerpieces.

Sponsors for the event were Ottawa Noon Rotary, The Times, Robert Hasty (Farmers Insurance),

the Justice Law Firm, US Silica, Illinois Valley Contractors Association, WCMY, Diamond Brothers Insurance, Exelon, First Federal Savings Bank, Illinois Valley Radon Mitigation, St. Margaret’s Health, T&L Janitorial Supply, the Doug and Rorie Schweickert Charitable Trust, and Quality Care Cleaning.

“We are so grateful to all that made this event the most successful Black & White Ball to date,” Tracy Beattie, president and CEO, said.

“The success of this event is crucial to the services provided by our agency and will help SRRC provide therapy services to hundreds of children in 2019. We are so grateful to all who donated and attended.”

SRRC is a non-profit agency serving more than 500 children per year. Services include occupational, speech and developmental therapy to children throughout the Starved Rock area, a child care center for children with and without special needs in Ottawa, and toddler classes for 2-year-olds.

Ptak steps down as IVCC women’s basketball coach OGLESBY — Tom Ptak announced recently he’s stepping down as the Illinois Valley Community College women’s basketball coach after six seasons.

Ptak led the 2016-17 team that included Daniela Pavlovich, Hannah Wolfe and Julia Pohar to the Region IV District II championship game and was twice named Arrowhead Conference Coach of the Year.

Despite struggling to field teams of 10 or more players, Ptak’s squads remained competitive. Hired in July 2013, Ptak scrambled to put a team together, a unit that would go on to win a surprising 12 games.

“I know when we entered the gym with the small number of players we had, other teams counted it as a victory. That year an opposing coach told me, ‘Your team plays hard.’ To me, when you can get the most out of your talent, that is the greatest

Ptak’s coaching style over a 22-year career was supportive rather than confrontational.

“I never believed in being in-yourface or making players uncomfortable. I told my players I was their biggest fan. I didn’t want them looking over their shoulder if they made

a mistake,” he said.

“No one wants to be embarrassed.

I wanted my players to relax and have fun. My teams knew I believed in them.”

Team-building events included a fall trip to Chicago, where players toured the Lakefront on bikes, viewed architectural landmarks and saw — from the 25th floor of a building overlooking Grant Park — the path the Great Chicago Fire had taken.

“I wanted to expose them to things they were unaware of,” he said.

“Those trips will have a greater impact on the players as they grow older.”

Ptak largely recruited only in-district players and had success with that model, “but that got tougher and tougher.”

He praised the support he received from IVCC Athletic Director Cory Tomasson, President Jerry Corcor-

an and administrative assistant Sue Harding — “mother of the athletic department.”

“Everyone provided me everything I needed to be successful. I was never pressured over wins and losses. Foremost, they care about their student athletes and ensure they are students first,” he said.

His greatest support came from spouse Lynn Cawley, who encouraged his players and provided them with thoughtful kindnesses such as special-order basketball cookies.

“I could never do what I do without Lynn,” he said.

Aside from coaching, Ptak operates a family funeral home, assists with Lynn’s busy hair salon and is the city of LaSalle’s longest serving alderman.

“What I will miss most about coaching is the relationships you develop with players,” he said.
