OGLESBY — There are many facets in launching a new product or business into the marketplace. To help students understand these different relationships, Illinois Valley Community College’s Making Industry Meaningful In College (MIMIC) program helps provide practical, real-world experience with designing, troubleshooting, manufacturing and marketing.

This nationally recognized program, now in its 24th year, places students from design, manufacturing and business programs into teams with the challenge of developing products from concept to completion.

The teams, called “companies,” simulate an industrial company structure. This allows them to experience a workplace environment in a classroom setting.

MIMIC gives students the opportunity to use creative thinking skills and teamwork to utilize the knowledge gained in their previous classes to help their team overcome the various problems that will undoubtedly arise during any business venture.

coordinator and one of the MIMIC co-founders, said: “We want our students to not only have ability, but to be employable. Our students have skills with communication, teamwork, problem solving and time management. This is as close to real-life as we can get them. We found during the first year that we didn’t need to build in problems to their projects because they arrive on their own.”

There were five student “companies” displaying wares at the recent MIMIC Fair held on the IVCC campus. A sixth team held the responsibility of organizing and promoting the event, which was held in the cafeteria foyer.

Products for sale included modular desk organizers, yard decor, fountains, metal art, wireless charging tables and modular planters.

“We learned we couldn’t get too complicated because we only had so much time and the biggest lesson we learned was the importance of time management and communication,” MIMIC student Rebecca Reed of LaSalle said.

Reed was part of the Women In Technology (WIT) company, along with instructor Theresa Molln, Amelia Stalter of Peru and Kiley Rosnes of Tonica.

reported communication as the key lesson of the exercise.

“This was a nice experience, and I liked the creative freedom and working with the other classes to see their perspectives. The communication was challenging, but we learned how important it was while working with the welding team,” Shelby Chalus, of the Tabletown company, said.

“This taught us that you have to keep going if something doesn’t work out. You have to figure out how to correct it,” student Dalton Paulick said.

Sales at the MIMIC Fair were good as most teams reported they had either sold all or most of their products. Some teams were able to increase revenue through raffles or other attractions.

The most significant change to happen to the MIMIC program throughout the years has come from the advances in technology, and IVCC has kept pace with the ever-changing world.

“I liked educating myself with the design process and seeing the end result of the 3-D printing. It gave us a real sense of pride to sell so many,” Kiest said.

West side lot work to start in June or July

Discussion regarding the state

of the school’s west parking lot is not new to the district, as the topic has been raised in the past.

However, with estimated numbers for various possible variations on the project, the board returned to the subject at its recent meeting.

According to Al Leffelman, board president, the expansion would help create a situation so that “people aren’t parking in grass and nasty gravel,” specifically on the north side of the lot.

The district is planning to purchase the materials, for which the Tonica Parent-Teacher Committee has committed to cover half the cost up to $8,000.

Then the school will work with

qualified volunteers to complete the project.

The project is expected to commence in June or July.

The board is seeking an individual to fill an open seat. Interested parties are asked to contact Principal-Superintendent Chuck Schneider at 815-442-3420.

Applications must be picked up from the office and are due back by May 8.

Rezin bill to help prevent SIDS passes Senate SPRINGFIELD — Unsafe sleep environments are often a large contributor to infant deaths labeled as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), said state Sen. Sue Rezin (R-Morris), who is chief sponsor of legislation for stricter requirements following an investigation of a child who died suddenly and unexpectedly. Senate Bill 1568 passed the Senate on April 10.

SB 1568 would require coroners to conduct an autopsy following the investigation, as well as listing any environmental factors that may have contributed to the death. The bill would also require the Department of Public Health to publish current data it receives from coroner reports so the public has access to reporting concerning SIDS. “Too often, infant deaths are being ruled as SIDS even when there are unsafe factors present at the scene where the infant passed,” Rezin said. “By just putting SIDS on the death certificate, potentially valuable information is being left out that could help prevent infant deaths in the future.”

The legislation was brought to Rezin by constituent, Ashley Lamps, who lost her son in 2013 to SIDS. Lamps now runs a foundation advocating for SIDS awareness and the use of safe sleep practices. SB 1568 is being considered by the House of Representatives.

Gardening program accepting online applicants Registration will close on May 20 For the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program, the past four decades can be measured by the millions of volunteer hours given to help bring horticultural help to communities across the state.

This year marks the 48th anniversary of the Illinois Master Gardener program. With more than 3,000 members today, Illinois Master Gardeners have given more than 2.3 million volunteer hours — a value of more than $46 million — to the state.

Today, Master Gardener volunteers, who come from farms, small towns, suburbs and cities, offer numerous educational opportunities related to gardening in nearly every county in the state.

The mission of the Illinois Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” After 60 hours of training in topics such as vege-

table and flower gardening, insect problems and plant diseases, the volunteers participate in programs throughout their communities.

Some of those opportunities may include speaking at garden clubs, civic groups or schools; answering calls or emails at help desks; establishing demonstration gardens that serve as educational tools; and educating citizens on how to establish community gardens.

You don’t have to be a gardening expert to become a Master Gardener. All you need is an interest in gardening, some time to volunteer in the community and a desire to share your knowledge with others.

The program is more about connections: connecting people with other gardeners, with their community, and with reliable resources for information. Once connections are forged, it’s time to get sowing and

growing in many meaningful community projects.

The University of Illinois Extension is now accepting applications to participate in the Online Master Gardener Training Program. This new online program allows volunteers to complete the training who may have never been able to in the past due to schedule or time conflicts.

This online, self-guided course for Illinois residents can be completed any time of day or night. Set aside about four hours per week for videos, reading the manual and completing quizzes, and the training will be completed in 14 weeks.

The 2019 summer Master Gardener Online Training includes 13 modules — an introduction and 12 subject-areas. Module topics include botany; soils and fertilizers; plant diseases; entomology; integrated pest management; annuals and perennials; trees, shrubs and woody vines; lawns; small and tree fruits; vegetables; composting/organic gardening; and living with wildlife.

Each module consists of several

videos and an online quiz; therefore, a strong internet connection is highly recommended. Please note this training is not being offered in local Extension offices, but must be completed through use of a personal computer or other computer access. The registration cost for the program is $300, which includes the Master Gardener manual.

Registration for the summer 2019 class is open from now through May 20, and the class will start on June 3. Yednock acts to raise awareness of veterans’ suicides SPRINGFIELD — To bring attention to the recent epidemic of suicide among veterans, state Rep. Lance Yednock, D-Ottawa, is sponsoring a resolution that supports veterans who may be facing mental illness. It also requests the state create a memorial for veterans who

have been lost due to suicide.

“As the son of a United States Marine, I know that the physical and mental scars suffered abroad by our bravest citizens are often brought back home and can last forever,” Yednock said.

“That’s why we need to make it clear to our veterans that we support them in many ways, not just with words, but with action. As a state, we should both honor our fallen heroes and do

everything we can to support future and current veterans who may face mental illness by providing the services and support that they deserve.”

Many veterans returning from active duty experience physical and psychological ailments. In 2016, the suicide rate for veterans was 1.5 times greater than non-veterans and accounted for 14 percent of all adult suicide deaths in the U.S. even though only 8 percent of the population has

House Resolution 168 states support for veterans currently struggling with mental illness and suicidal thoughts and pays tribute to veterans who have lost their lives to suicide. HR 168 encourages the state of Illinois to create a memorial for veterans who have died of suicide to be included at Oak Ridge Cemetery in Springfield.

Mueller report contains no new revelations about 2016 Russian cyber hack; security steps taken since

BY GRANT MORGAN Capitol News Illinois gmorgan@capitolnewsillinois.com SPRINGFIELD — Special counsel Robert Mueller’s recently released report on Russian interference in the 2016 election repeated what Illinois already knew: that it suffered the worst election data breach of any state in the country when Russian agents stole the personal information of more than 70,000 voters.

To the Illinois State Board of Elections, that is welcome news.

“I’m reassured, because there was nothing new in the report about what happened in 2016,” SBOE spokesman Matt Dietrich said. “I knew there was potential for Illinois to be mentioned, but I didn’t think there’d be any revelations about it.”

An indictment of 13 Russian operatives last summer was the first public mention of the SBOE website breach. A brief recount of the incident is on Page 50 of the Mueller report released with redactions on April 18. It details “intrusions” on the “administration of U.S. elections.” Russian hackers accessed voters’ names, addresses, birth dates and the last four digits of their Social Security numbers.

“In one instance in approximately June 2016, the GRU [Russian military intelligence] compro-

mised the computer network of the Illinois State Board of Elections by exploiting a vulnerability in the SBOE’s website,” the Mueller report reads.

While the summary of the hacking incident is unchanged from what was publicly known, the recap is followed by several lines of blacked-out redactions.

“That’s where we would have learned something new,” Dietrich said of the redactions. “We might have seen exactly how the FBI connected Russia with our data breach. But it’s still considered an open investigation, so the feds are not going to let the public know their techniques.”

Dietrich said while the chief concern was identity theft, there has been nothing “out of the ordinary” reported to the elections board since the incident, suggesting nothing was done with the stolen data.

Neither have any local jurisdictions reported cybersecurity problems in the two election cycles since the breach.

Still, with the help of a $13.2 million grant from the federal government last year, the state has taken numerous measures to protect voter data.

Those included hiring nine “cyber navigators” to advise and assess the risk of county election offices, and partnering with the Illinois National Guard to immediately send a cyber expert to any of the state’s 108 local election offices should an incident occur.

That partnership, which cost the SBOE just less than $30,000, expired after the 2018 elections, but Dietrich said the board is considering doing it again.

IVCC Wind Ensemble performance scheduled for May 5 Gene Montgomery to retire after 30 years as conductor OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Wind Ensemble will be in concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 5, in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.

The performance will include “Manhattan Beach March” and “The Fairest of the Fair” by John Philip Sousa/Frederick Fennel; “Poet and Peasant Overture” by Franz von Suppe/Kenneth Singleton; “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” by Claude T. Smith; “Incantation and Dance” by John Barnes Chance; “Danse Celestiale” by Robert Sheldon; and “Folk Festival” from the motion picture “The Gadfly,” by Dmitri Shostakovich/Donald Hunsberger.

It will be conducted by Gene Montgomery, and the ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators, and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music.

The concert is also a farewell to Montgomery, who retires May 18 after more than 30 years with IVCC.

In his retirement letter, he recalled, “It was approximately 29 or 30 years ago that I was sitting in the office of Dr. Sam Rogal, dean of what was then the Humanities/Fine Arts Division.

We were lamenting the fact there had been a several year hiatus of having an instrumental performing group at IVCC, and he asked me if I knew of anyone capable of re-instating the ensemble. Although I was still a full-time public school instrumental and choral teacher, I quickly answered that I would be more than happy to accept the challenge,” Montgomery wrote. “Since that time, the IVCC Wind Ensemble has been widely respected among music educators in Illinois.”

Robyn Schiffman, dean of Humanities, Fine Arts and Social Sciences, said: “Gene has grown the Wind Ensemble over the years to represent the best of community and student musicians. OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host an open house for its new Transfer Academy at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8, at its Ottawa Center, 321 W. Main St. The event will features a brief presentation, Q & A with Academy leaders, optional registration, takehome material and refreshments.

Transfer Academy is focused on dual-credit junior and senior high school students released in the afternoon to attend classes at Ottawa Center or on main campus. Dual credit allows students to earn college and high school credit simultaneously.

Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m.

LASALLE — On Thursday, May 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the University of Illinois Extension, in collaboration with the city of LaSalle and the Canal Corridor Association, will offer a workshop for entrepreneurs, community leaders and economic development professionals.

The program will be presented by Pam Schallhorn, a community and economic development educator at the Education Center and Community Teaching Kitchen located at 944 First St. in LaSalle.

The workshop was designed for those interested in tapping into the creative talent in their communities to build viable enterprises by developing an appreciative and supportive creative culture. Creative entrepreneurs include artists, all types of designers, musicians, boutique retailers, specialty food producers and others. The program also offers ways to start-up and fund creative enterprises. Examples include microbreweries, popup shops, co-businesses, art co-ops, outdoor markets, music festivals and internet cafes. All of these have

been shown to be the “third spaces” needed to attract young adults back to a community.

Schallhorn has lived and worked in LaSalle and the surrounding area. In 2001 she proposed, in collaboration with the Canal Corridor Association, the development of a historic district in downtown LaSalle.

“I am excited to be invited to present in LaSalle and to have the opportunity to see all of the great things the area has been doing,” she said.

She’s been an educator with the Extension since 2014, and her teaching and research interests include the creative sector economy; entrepreneurial development; downtown redevelopment; and reversing the outmigration of youth from rural communities.

“The Canal Corridor Association is pleased to see the redevelopment of historic downtown LaSalle in the last eleven years since we invested in bringing visitors to the I&M

IVCC commencement on May 18

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College has announced LaSalle County Circuit Judge Joseph P. Hettel, an IVCC graduate, will deliver the college’s keynote address at its 53rd annual commencement at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, May 18, in the gymnasium.

A native of Ottawa, Hettel graduated from Marquette High School and in 1987 earned an associate’s degree from IVCC. He was a National Junior College Athletic Association Honorable Mention All-American linebacker.

After earning the juris doctorate from Chicago Kent College of Law, he began his legal career as an assistant LaSalle County state’s attorney in 1994. He was elected state’s attorney in 2000 and re-elected in 2004.

In 2006, the Illinois Supreme Court appointed Hettel resident circuit judge of the 13th Judicial Circuit, LaSalle County. He ran unopposed in 2008 and was retained in 2014.

He resides in rural Ottawa with his wife, Leah, and their three children.

About 200 students are expected to walk at the commencement ceremony, including some of the 158 summer 2018 graduates, 165 fall graduates, 379 projected spring graduates and 82 projected summer 2019 graduates.

OGLESBY — A gift from Southern California philanthropist Ralph Scriba has led to significant instructional enhancements within the Illinois Valley Community College nursing program.

Scriba’s $50,000 September donation led to the recent purchase of two patient simulators including “Nursing Anne” to replace the former “Meti man” manikin the department used for more than a decade.

“The differences between the manikin and the new simulator are tremendous,” said nursing lab instructor Laura Hodgson.

One difference include wireless technology that makes “Nursing Anne” much more lifelike. The previous manikin had a large electrical cord.

Another is that “Nursing Anne’s” compressor is built into her left thigh. The previous manikin was tethered to a large compressor with a 25-foot hose.

“I hid the compressor in the closet due to the noise and the size,” Hodgson said.

Nursing Anne also has lifelike movable joints.

Along with the simulators from Laerdal Medical Corp., the dona-

tion enabled upgrades on two older manikins to “Nursing Anne’s” capabilities.

“This increases the availability and frequency of simulation to more students,” Director of Nursing Division Julie Hogue said.

Hodgson noted the contribution also funded the purchase of several hospital-based scenarios to simulate real-life situations in a lab setting.

“Our students will gain critically important knowledge and training for years to come thanks to Mr. Scriba’s generosity,” she said.

Hogue said there are currently 133 students in the program with 163 expected to be enrolled next year. Each of those students will use the simulators.

In January, Scriba donated an additional $50,000 to help the college launch a Medical Assistant program that will begin in January 2020. Over the past six years, Scriba, a 1951 LaSalle-Peru-Oglesby Junior College graduate, has donated $350,000.

“This gift is a perfect, quantifiable example of how Ralph enhances instruction for hundreds, if not thousands of students,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.
