Slimed for the students

IVCC’s Giving Day raises funds for students in need

OGLESBY — Athletic competitions, silly games, humor and an abundance of spirit were combined by IVCC students, faculty, staff and community members to raise funds for students in need during the college’s second annual IVCC Giving Day.

Held in the gymnasium on April 5, the event, sponsored by the IVCC Foundation to help provide financial assistance to students, was a success.

The first Giving Day raised $23,500.

Though the final numbers for the second event were still be totaled the next morning, IVCC Director of Community Relations Fran Brolley later reported the most recent raised $21,546.97 and that figure could still rise.

“This is a fun idea and a great way to bring together teachers, staff and faculty. Forty percent of our students are eligible for financial aid, so anything we can do to help them is a worthy cause,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

Father-and-sons team wins Walleye Classic

BY KEVIN HIERONYMUS khieronymus@bcrnews.com ​SPRING VALLEY — Chris Ploch of Tonica had a profitable day with his two sons on the river in the Illinois River Walleye Classic Saturday.

The Plochs snagged the top prize sponsored by the Spring Valley Walleye Club event, totaling 14.84 pounds with five fish. They received $2,240 for their efforts.

Cade Ploch, 16, also snagged the big fish, a 5.96-pound sauger that came with an additional $700 payout.

Runners-up Bruce Merkel, Wayne Merkel and Dave Hall totaled 14.35 pounds with five fish, winning $1,240.

Third place went to Mark Meravy, Dave Zurawski and Terry Carr with five fish totaling 13.43 pounds. They received $600.

The fourth-place prize of $400 went to Dave Gossar, Dirk Pagakis and Jay Walsh at five fish, 11.83 pounds.

Rounding out the top 10 were fifth, Gary Merkel, John Smith and John Balla (five, 10.84 pounds).

Sixth, John and Jena Dalzot and Shawn Herrick (five, 9.16 pounds).

Each team member collected pledges for each free throw they could make within three minutes.

Tunnel and Reese came out victorious in front of the cheering crowd after sinking a combined total of 44 free throws compared to Pohar and Tomasson’s 39.

The next event, the “Chukin’ Chick’n Challenge,” had Corcoran and IVCC Associate Vice President for Student Services Mark Grzybowski compete to see who could toss their rubber chicken into the farthest bucket a la the old “Bozo Buckets” game after they’d collected pledges. The contest was considered a draw after Corcoran and Grzybowski both chucked their chickens equal distances.

The “Doughnuts for Dough” contest saw Assistant Director of Admissions Aseret Loveland return to the table with student Jonathan Quintana to see who could eat the most doughnuts in three minutes. They were joined by student Richard Nowotnik and IVCC’s Ag instructor Willard Mott who were competing for the first time.

The electric green slime was created by the school’s Chem Club students, and its main ingredients were oatmeal, applesauce and food coloring. The competitors sat in chairs facing the crowd and had no idea who had won.

Brolley and Yong tied, and each was thoroughly slimed. Yong took the precaution of wearing a protective suit and hood, while Brolley took the sliming unprotected and even ate some of it as it poured over his face.. Laughing, both men hugged each other afterwards as the green slimed dripped from their faces and the crowd cheered in appreciation.

More traditional fundraising efforts were also a part of Giving Day. Raffle tickets were sold for a grand prize “St. Louis Getaway” that included a four-piece luggage set; second prize was four White Sox tickets with a parking pass; and third prize was an assortment of gift cards.

The IVCC Foundation annually awards about 250 scholarships and has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships during the past four years.

“Every bit given helps our students achieve academic success,” IVCC alumni coordinator Janice Corrigan said at the event.

TONICA FIRE DEPARTMENT FIREFIGHTERS ISSUE MARCH REPORT

TONICA — The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department (TVFD) responded to nine emergency calls during March — seven ambulance requests and two accidents.

Through March, the year-to-date number of emergency calls is 47.

Training during the month included: • Seventeen members completing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), ladder and thermal imaging camera training at the Oglesby training facility.

• Six members participated in squad training, which covered a review of equipment on all trucks and at the station.

• Officer Rick Turri attended a railroad safety class covering rail crossing safety and rail transportation of hazardous material.

• EMS training covered psychiatric emergencies and MRI safety.

• Turri presented a public education program covering fire safety for the Tonica Cub Scouts. The scouts were also given a tour of the fire station and were able to ask questions about the firefighting equipment.

Chief Al Stremlau reviewed the revised MABAS Box cards received from the Peru Fire Department. All interior firefighters have completed their annual SCBA fit testing in Peru.

Captain Todd Anderson reported the new truck committee has met and continues to develop a plan for a new rescue-pumper. The preliminary cost estimates for a newer rescue truck are between $150,000 and $250,000.

The membership approved plans for a new 24-foot by 24-foot addition to the north side of the fire station.

A thank you was received from the LP-Area Career Center Fire-EMR class for the department’s donation of a Kendrick Extrication Device, a scoop stretcher and a builda-board stretcher.

The membership approved a software upgrade to the weather monitoring software on the fire station computer.

The village board approved the TVFD Weather Watcher monitoring and Weather Warning siren activation procedures.

As of March, the TVFD has received $11,450 in donations from local residents and businesses.

“With continued financial support like this, the department can provide these vital services without property taxation,” Turri said.

Roosevelt Street won’t be abandoned after all

FIRE DEPARTMENT REPORTS ACCIDENTS At 5:27 a.m. on April 4, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department was called to a multiple-vehicle accident on Interstate 39, north of Tonica.

Emergency personnel found four vehicles in the median and in the field on the east side of the interstate. Oglesby Rescue and Ambulance was called for mutual aid.

After assessing the scene, it was determined there were two semi-trucks, one car and one pickup truck pulling a horse trailer involved. Emergency personnel evaluated the six people who were in the vehicles. They all refused transport to a hospital, and no animals were injured.

State police, IDOT, and county police assisted at the scene.

Multiple wrecker services were called to remove the damaged vehicles. During the incident, northbound traffic was diverted off of the interstate at the Tonica exit and onto Route 251.

Roosevelt Street, unpaved and without gravel, has been a point of interest for the village.

Technically a street, the path of sod is Lostant’s responsibility, but the village lately has found it more hassle than it is worth.

The state police are investigating the accident. Tonica cleared the scene in about an hour and a half while wrecker services were still removing some of the damaged vehicles.

At the time of this multiple-vehicle accident, there was also another semi-truck which jack-knifed into the I-39 median about a mile north of the original accident.

State police investigated this accident and found no one was injured. Heavy wreckers were used to remove this semi-truck.

GRASS FIRE At 12:45 p.m. on April 8, the Lostant Fire Department responded to a grass fire with a nearby structure at 839 Route 18 in LaSalle County.

Responders discovered the fire had spread to a structure and was well involved. Lostant FD activated its mutual aid policy

for structure fires, which automatically notified the Toluca and Wenona fire departments. Additionally, the Leonore and Reading fire departments were also called for aid along with the Eastern Marshall County Ambulance Service.

Brian Pflibsen, the owner of the property, stated he was working in his building when he first noticed the fire. They were burning outside, and it’s believed to have spread to the grass and then to the building. Pflibsen called the fire department and tried putting the fire out, but it spread too quickly.

The roof collapsed, which made it difficult to extinguish.

Lostant FD contacted Illinois Valley Excavating and asked for an excavator to help remove the metal roof and building debris so the fire could be extinguished. Firefighters remained on the scene until 6 p.m.

There isn’t enough newsprint produced in the U.S. to meet the demand of the industry, and given the fact that newsprint consumption has dropped by more than 75 percent since 2000, no U.S. producer is going to invest in starting a newsprint mill. Mills cost hundreds of millions of dollars to build and take years to come into full production.

The indispensable craft of politicians F

or the most part, we Americans value expertise.

We want our physicians to possess knowledge and experience.

We want our lawyers to know the law inside out. We want our clergymen, our engineers, our farmers to bring the kind of proficiency and skill to their work that comes only with familiarity and practice.

So here’s a question. Why is it that the more expertise politicians’ gain in their field, the more we deride them?

I’ve been involved in politics, in one way or another, for most of my life. That makes me a politician. And I’ve had more than a few people refuse to shake my hand because they believed that might somehow taint them.

Politicians, many Americans think, are looking out for themselves, beholden to special interests and party leaders, and incapable of working for the common good.

Politicians may disappoint us, frustrate us, or even anger us.

They certainly make mistakes. But here’s the thing: we cannot solve our problems at any level — local, state or federal — without skilled politicians. They’re indispensable to the system.

I’ve had a good vantage point to

COMMENTS ON CONGRESS Lee H. Hamilton observe successful American politicians over the decades, and I’ve come to believe the craft of politics requires certain characteristics.

Not every politician possesses them, but the good ones — and there are plenty of good politicians — strive for them.

First, they’re attuned to the moods of the people and to shifts in public opinion. This is not a bad thing — their job, after all, is to represent us. At the same time, they adhere to certain beliefs: they have faith in this country and its future, and they often hold a vision for what its success will look like. They believe it can make progress.

They also know that progress will not come easily. They understand they’ll face setbacks, failure, and hardship, but they persevere in the American way of governing because it can make a lot of things possible. They search for a path forward, and for a remedy to a problem.

They tend to be articulate, adept

at influencing others, and at times inspirational. But they are also pragmatic, and prepared to adjust, compromise, and improvise in order to move policy in the direction they’d like to see it go.

They may pursue the perfect, but most of them know they won’t get there, and will have to be satisfied with incremental progress. Very rarely do we advance in leaps and bounds.

They’re comfortable holding authority and responsibility, and because they recognize that they share these burdens with others, they respect their colleagues. They try to be civil with them, since they understand the dynamic nature of politics — that you don’t have permanent enemies or allies and that your foe one day may be a comrade the next.

And while they know the value of coming together in unity and may even strive for it, they understand that it’s rarely achievable. Indeed, they expect criticism, appreciating that it comes with the territory and is one sign of the vitality of the democracy we live in.

Finally, good politicians understand that politics consists of a lot more than running for election. It has to be practiced every day in a democracy. We don’t live in a

perfect world, and we can’t attain one. But in the end, politics is about striving to get there — to make the world, or at least this country, better.

The best politicians understand that this requires inclusivity, that all groups in every part of the nation have to be taken into account, that many interests have to be balanced, if the U.S. is going to succeed and be secure. They retain a fundamental faith in the people of the country. They do not give up on America.

I don’t want to suggest either that I think all politicians possess these qualities, or that any politician enjoys them all. Yet these characteristics are what mastery of the craft of politics demands, and they come only with time and experience.

In my book, any politician who displays them deserves the same respect we’d give any specialist who has acquired the knowledge, skill and insight demanded by a complicated, demanding and meaningful profession.

rade laws and, ultimately, imposing tariffs are designed to protect American interests and jobs. That’s a concept everyone can agree on.

But what happens when those laws and tariffs have the opposite effect? That’s an issue that’s playing out in D.C. with the Department of Commerce and the International Trade Commission.

A lone newsprint mill in Washington state, owned by a New York hedge fund, brought a complaint to the International Trade Commission alleging unfair trade practices against Canadian producers of newsprint.

Most likely the paper on which you are reading this was produced in Canada.

This year, the Department of Commerce has imposed two preliminary tariffs that have increased the price of newsprint for some newspapers by more than 30 percent.

This summer, both agencies will explore whether this temporary tariff should become permanent.

The street has become riddled with deep ruts when wet, and efforts to curtail such happenings have been unsuccessful. “We did put barricades up there before, and the barricades ended up in the creek,� said board member Andy Forrest.

The easiest, most economical, solution was evident: abandon the street.

However, resident and property owner Mike Barr disagreed, saying that abandonment of the street would adversely affect his property.

One area of concern was the property’s value should he decide to sell it. “I’m not going to own that property forever,� he said.

Another possible concern was accessibility if the property in particular were further built upon.

Abandoning the street would leave only an alley.

The new plan is to close a portion of the road during such times as it is likely to be too wet. “I like the idea of posting the road the way the township would, from a date to a date,� Immel said, explain-

ing that the closure would be so that people “couldn’t drive on the sod part during a particular portion of the year.�

He said this idea would leave the road open to Barr’s property the whole year, as the closure would occur beyond that line.

The action was tabled until next month, allowing conversation with the road commissioner about the possibility.

Impel also spoke about a potential method through which the village could deal with abandoned properties, with some buildings that could be removed.

The process involves obtaining the deed to the property, which then puts responsibility on the village for demolition and the costs thereof.

Because of the cost involved, Immel indicated Lostant likely would not do this in the near future without the help of a grant.

The board has allocated up to $1,000 for its concrete projects, the proposed ramp in front of Blue Giggles American Legion monument in the park, so that work on the latter can be completed before Memorial Day, which is when the Legion requested the monument be available.

Immel proposed that he could pay to paint the front of the village hall, with “making it look halfway decent for summer� as his goal.

Sgt. Jason Brokaw memorialized with scholarship OGLESBY — The family of former Peru Police Sgt. Jason Brokaw recently created a criminal justice scholarship in his memory.

Sgt. Brokaw’s widow, Deborah, daughter Hayleigh and son Calvin donated $15,000 to the Illinois Valley Community College Foundation to create the Jason A. Brokaw Memorial Scholarship for students pursuing criminal justice careers. Also contributing to the endowment are his parents George and Barbara Robinson of Granville.

The $500 scholarship will be given annually beginning in September.

Sgt. Brokaw died Aug. 8 following a courageous battle with transverse myelitis, an inflammation of the spinal cord. The illness, which caused paralysis, forced his retirement in 2016.

Hired by Peru in 2008, officer Brokaw had worked previously at the Spring Valley Police Department, Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Granville Police Department. He also worked for the village of Ladd and DePue.

“All through his career, Jason performed his duties admirably,” Peru Police Chief Doug Bernabei said at the time of Brokaw’s death at age 43.

“His common sense approach and genuine respect for others served him, his community and all of us very well.”

Deb Brokaw said, “Jason was extremely passionate about being a policeman down to his uniform and the reports he filed. This scholarship will provide a way for someone to carry on that passion in law enforcement — a profession Jason loved.”

Brokaw was a graduate of Putnam County High School, Illinois Valley Community College and Illinois State University. While at IVCC, he worked in the bookstore and in later life remained an advocate for the college in the community and at home with Hayleigh and Calvin.

It was Hayleigh and Calvin’s idea to start the scholarship, said their mother.

“Our father always said IVCC was a great place to start,” said Hayleigh, a sophomore at Hall High School.

Kick-off meeting held for Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists OGLESBY — On March 2, the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs for Bureau, LaSalle, Marshall and Putnam counties held a unit-wide 2018 kick off meeting on the campus of Illinois Valley Community College in Oglesby.

The purpose of the kickoff meeting was to connect with Master Gardeners and Master Naturalists in the four counties, and to discuss program goals and visions for 2018 and beyond.

The Master Gardener and Master Naturalist programs support local communities by providing numerous volunteer hours through Extension approved community service projects, as well as educational programs, services and events. The mission of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener program is “Helping Others Learn to Grow.” Master Gardeners involve people in improving the quality of life by helping them find sound management practices for home and urban natural resources, by

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s agriculture program was bolstered recently when the Illinois Community College Board approved its application for an Associate of Applied Science degree in Agronomy.

“This further expands the agriculture opportunities already available at IVCC,” said program coordinator and instructor Willard Mott.

“Addition of the AAS in Agronomy further empowers students of all ages and backgrounds to accomplish their career goals.”

Agronomy majors hone their expertise in crop and soil science, pest management and precision ag technology, Mott said.

“This is another big step forward for our agriculture program” said IVCC President Jerry Corcoran.

Last summer, the ICCB certified IVCC’s AAS in Agricultural Business Management.

The two year, 60-credit agronomy program beginning this fall will prepare students for immediate employment in a steadily expanding sector. Agronomy graduates work
