Cemetery starts cleanup, plans breakfast TONICA — The Tonica Cemetery Association has issued a reminder that cleanup week is the first week in April, and on April 6, grave blankets, seasonal, glass and faded items will be removed.

The fourth annual pancake and sausage breakfast will be held from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday, April 14, at the Tonica United Methodist Church. Admission is $ 7 for adults and kids 12 and under will be $4. All

proceeds will go toward the road project.

SPRINGFIELD

Energy assistance still available through LIHEAP SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) announced that winter heating assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is still available.

Heating assistance and Reconnection Assistance (RA) applications will be processed through May 31 or until funding is exhausted. Even if your household has already applied for and received LIHEAP (bill payment assistance, but not the full RA benefit) since Oct. 1, 2018, you may be eligible for the RA benefit.

Reconnection Assistance is avail-

able for eligible households who are disconnected from their energy source needed for heating or are under imminent threat of disconnection (are within seven days of being disconnected or have less than 25 percent in their propane tank). The RA benefit may also be approved to help adults who are trying to establish heat-related energy services.

A single-person household can qualify with a monthly gross income of up to $1,518; a two-person household up to $2,058; a family of three can earn up to $2,598; and a family of four can earn up to $3,138.

Benefits are paid directly to energy vendors on behalf of eligible households. The exception is households whose heating costs are included in their rent.

Customers must bring all required documentation when applying for assistance. LIHEAP heating assistance applications, including Reconnection Assistance, will continue to be accepted through May 31, or until funding is exhausted. Applications are taken on a first-come, firstserved basis.

LASALLE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE At 2:24 p.m. March 25, deputies cited Shannon Razo, 30, of Peru for speeding 78 mph in a 55 mph zone, following a traffic stop on Route 71 in Hope Township.

At 5:30 p.m. on March 25, deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at Route 251 and North 21st Road in Eden Township. A 16-year-old juvenile was traveling south on Route 251 and attempted to turn east onto North 21st Road. He was struck from behind by a southbound vehicle driven by Andrea Sugg, 36, of Lostant. No injuries were reported and no citations were issued.

At 11:14 a.m. March 26, deputies cited Angela Taylor, 55, of Morris for disobeying a stop sign, following a traffic stop on Route 18 in Hope Township.

At 1:30 a.m. March 31, deputies investigated a two-vehicle accident at Second Street and North 20th Road in Tonica (Eden Township). Chloe Corpus, 25, of LaSalle struck a parked vehicle owned by Mark Zimmer, 44, of Tonica.

No injuries were reported and no citations were issued.

Church plans April 8 meeting on part-time vs. full-time pastor TONICA — The Tonica United Methodist Church is in the process of evaluating its options to continue with a parttime pastor or to join another church to return to the benefits of having a full-time pastor.

Each option has individual positive and negative implications, and the Tonica United Methodist Church wants to be sure to collect feedback from everyone

who is interested and has thoughts.

There will be a meeting at 6 p.m.

Monday, April 8, in McPherson Hall at the church. The church wants to extend an invitation to all, and allow time for everyone’s voice to be heard before reaching a decision.

Following the dedication ceremony, state Sen. Sue Rezin presented Chester, the last surviving Kaszynski brother, with a copy of the honorary sign that has been placed along Route 6 from Spring Valley to Peru. Many members of the Kaszynski family were present and spoke of the great honor this dedication has provided.

PERU — The section of Route 6 from Mary Street in Spring Valley to Harrison Street in Peru is now known as the Kaszynski Brothers Memorial Highway following a dedication sponsored by state Sen. Sue Rezin on March 30.

The honor was bestowed upon the family because of their six sons who served in World War II. Richard, Bernard, Florian, Thaddeus and Alex Kaszynski were all in the Army and served in the Pacific Theater. The last surviving brother, Chester, served in the Merchant Marines and also served during the Korean conflict.

Gathering at the Peru Fire Station for the dedication ceremony were Re zin, many Kaszynski family members, city officials, members of local veterans groups and also Anthony Witzak. In 2016, Witzak shared a sim-

ilar honor when a section of Route 251 was named in honor of the seven Witzak brothers who served during World War II. “The Kaszynskis’ story is a remarkable one, and it is an inspiration that all six brothers felt called to serve our country during World War II. The Kaszynski brothers’ service is the epitome of courage and patriotism. We stand here today because of their bravery and sacrifice,” Rezin said.

Rezin also empathized with the feelings their parents must have endured as they worried about the safe return of their sons.

The only brother wounded during the war was Alex. He recently died, but Rezin said she’d had the opportunity to speak with him and shared how proud he was of both his family, his country and the dedication honor.

“I want to thank the Kaszynskis, every veteran, those living and who have gone before us, and the men and women who are serving our country now. It is an honor and a privilege to share their story. It is one that will live through history,” Rezin said.

Following the ceremony, Kaszynski was presented with a copy of the memorial sign that has been placed along the route.

“I just want everyone to know what a great honor this is for our family,” one of the many Kaszynski family members in attendance said afterward.

Firefighters learn the ropes about rescue skills Tonica volunteers practice tying knots and other safety procedures

BY DAVE COOK news@tonicanews.com TONICA — During March, the Tonica Volunteer Fire Department conducted rope training classes.

This training allowed the firefighters to develop a good working knowledge of the various ropes, knots, hitches and rigging they may use at a fire or rescue incident.

The following knots and hitches were covered: overhand, figure-eight, figure-eight follow-through, figure-eight with a bite, figure-eight double bite, bowline, becket, water knot, barrel knot, butterfly knot, clove hitch, rolling clove and half-hitch.

Firefighters performed various evolutions using static and dynamic rope lines with braided and kern-mantle rescue and work ropes. They lifted various pieces of firefighting equipment from ground level to a simulated upper level fire floor.

Simulated incline rescues were also performed. A victim was placed in a Stokes basket and then lowered or raised on an incline that was too steep for rescue personnel to walk on safely. Various rope pulley systems were also used to demonstrate how beneficial mechanical advantage rope-pulley system are to move loads.

The Tonica Volunteer Fire Department is one of the few fire departments in the state operating on donations from residents and businesses rather than through property taxation.

PCCC will host AARP Smart Driver program on April 15 and 16 STANDARD — The Putnam County Community Center in Standard will host an AARP Smart Driver safety program from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16. The program is a classroom-based refresher course designed especially for drivers aged 50 and older.

This program aims to help community members retain their driving competency. Learn strategies, understand the effects of aging on driving, reduce the chance of having an accident and know when to retire from driving. Upon completion of

this course, participants will receive a certificate that can be presented to their automobile insurance holder that may entitle them to a discount.

There is a $15 fee for AARP members (with AARP membership card) and a $20 fee for non-members on the first day of class. Fees are payable to AARP for the instruction book and materials, and you must attend both days.

Applications, information now available for Mark Krenz Memorial Scholarship OTTAWA — Applications and information on the Mark Krenz Memorial Scholarship have been distributed to LaSalle County high schools and are available at the LaSalle County Soil & Water Conservation District’s office and the website www.lasalleswcd.org. Applications must be received at the district office by Friday, April 5.

The $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a LaSalle County high school senior or current college freshman, sophomore or junior who is pursuing a degree in agriculture, environmental sciences or natural resource management. The scholarship recipient will be selected in May. The scholarship was created as a legacy for Mark Krenz’s dedication to conservation and education. Krenz was deeply involved with the LaSalle Soil and Water Conservation District and served as board chairman and district director.

Anyone interested in more information or an application should contact the LaSalle County SWCD office at Route 23 and Dayton Road, Ottawa, or call 815-4330551, ext. 3. A downloadable application form can be found on the district’s website, www.Iasalleswcd.org.
