Second case of coronavirus announced in LaSalle County

Male in his 40s is recovering at home OTTAWA — The LaSalle County Health Department has confirmed an additional COVID-19 case in LaSalle County.

The case is a male in his 40s with no history of travel or contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19. The individual is recovering at home in isolation. Federal privacy restrictions prohibit the release of any additional information regarding this case.

Public health officials are in the beginning stages of the investigation and are working diligently to identify and investigate all individuals who were in contact with the case. No further information regarding the investigation is available at this time.

LaSalle County Health Department Administrator Julie Kerestes stated: “We want to remind La­­Salle County residents that both confirmed cases are considered to be

community acquired, which makes it clear that community spread of the virus is present throughout the county. We continue to work with our local and state partners in a collaborative response effort to COVID-19. The LaSalle County Health Department remains dedicated to protecting the health and safety of our residents and doing what we can to prevent further spread of the virus.”

The health department expects to see additional cases, and residents need to assume that they have been exposed to COVID-19. Every single LaSalle County resident can help by staying home, limiting the number of people you are in contact with, maintaining a 6-foot distance from others, and washing your hands.

If someone develops symptoms of cough and fever, they should stay home and isolate themselves from others. Should symptoms worsen, they should contact their health care providers immediately.

On Saturday, March 21, Gov J.B. Pritzker’s “Stay at Home Executive Order” went into effect until April 7.

The order prohibits things like vis-

iting the homes of friends and holding gatherings of any size.

The order closes all non-essential establishments, including most retail, recreation and entertainment businesses. It does not prohibit essential activities like going to the grocery store, taking your pet for a walk, or receiving medical care.

Be mindful of those who are at a greater risk for contracting this virus, including older adults and those with certain health conditions. All of these measures will help reduce the number of people who become sick at any given time and the possibility of exhausting our health care resources. Stay home and stay healthy!

Mendota lawyer tops fellow ex-prosecutor Vescogni in primary

by spotlighting two purported differences between him and Vescogni.

First, Martin insisted he had more civil experience — he had been county attorney and had represented LaSalle County even in private practice — and by his measure 30 percent of the state’s attorney’s duties are civil, not criminal.

Second, Martin accused Vescogni of poor relations with police departments, which led in part to the state’s attorney’s office breaking with the Tri-County Drug Enforcement Narcotics Team. The break with Tri-DENT led to the formation of the State’s Attorney Felony Enforcement Team, which spawned six federal lawsuits, two of them still pending, against the county.

Vescogni had tried to distance himself from the SAFE Team in broadcast sessions including one hosted by Shaw Media. The totals, however, suggest he could not shake the perception that he, as head of the narcotics division when SAFE was founded, was a key player in the unit’s formation.

Martin signaled he won’t stray much from his “experience mat-

ters” slogan as he turns his attention to Nov. 3. On the criminal side of his resume are six killers imprisoned for a combined 190 years (a seventh, Keith Mackowiak, is doing life) during his years as chief deputy assistant state’s attorney under Brian Towne.

Martin also reminded supporters of his long ties to law enforcement — his two brothers both are cops — and pledged to improve police department relations that he said have deteriorated under Donnelly.

Martin joined the state’s attorney’s office under Joe Navarro and served chiefly in felonies under Navarro and successor Mike James before leaving for private practice, initially with Herbolsheimer Lannon Henson Duncan & Reagan in LaSalle.

There, he represented the county on insurance issues.

He returned to the prosecutor’s office shortly after Towne was named state’s attorney in late 2006.

Martin served as a Towne chief deputy until 2012, when he became county attorney. Donnelly dismissed him from that post shortly after her election in 2016.

It will be Democrat Todd Martin of Mendota vs. incumbent Republican Karen Donnelly of Tonica in this November’s race for LaSalle County state’s attorney.

Martin, a 54-year-old Mendota attorney and former prosecutor, topped fellow Democrat Brian Vescogni in the March 17 primary contest with 57 percent of the vote. With all precincts reporting, the unofficial tally stood at 5,475-4,156 in Martin’s favor.

(It was, however, a low-turnout election: Just 22.5 percent of registered voters cast ballots.)

“I am completely overwhelmed by the amount of support I got from people,” Martin said. “I didn’t expect it. I’ve never been through this before and I had someone tell me, at the beginning, ‘You’ll be

amazed at what people have done on your behalf.’ I can’t express how grateful I am.”

Vescogni conceded in a brief statement issued around 10 p.m., trailing by 14 percentage points and with just 13 precincts left to be counted.

“I am proud of the way I ran my campaign and I am very thankful for everyone who supported me and worked hard on my behalf,” Vescogni said. “I want to congratulate Todd on his victory.”

Martin responded in kind and praised Vescogni for keeping the race above-board. “I appreciate the kind words, and I thought he did a very good job in his campaign,” Martin said.

Martin said he was at a loss for why he won the contest by a double-digit percentile, save for the fact he enjoyed good support from the law enforcement community — a sticking point between the two campaigns.

Both Martin and Vescogni had trumpeted their professional experience — 26 years and 20 years, respectively, much of it in the prosecutor’s office — but despite their parallel resumes, Martin appealed to voters

Congressman blames China for pandemic

Kinzinger says China hid the virus; opponent says the blame is a tactic

BY DEREK BARICHELLO Shaw Media Congressman Adam Kinzinger said March 18 the Chinese government should be held accountable for allowing its citizens to travel outside the country after it knew the coronavirus could be passed from human to human.

He tweeted March 18: “Daily reminder: you are in your home now because #Chinahidthevirus.”

His congressional opponent, Dani Brzozowski, believes pinning the blame solely on China — where the earliest cases of the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus were documented — is a tactic to divert the attention from President Donald Trump’s administration and its response to

the spread of the virus in the U.S. The LaSalle Democrat tweeted March 18: “Adam Kinzinger is following the Republican playbook of trying to distract from President Trump’s failure to lead,” accompanied by audio of Trump coinciding with a video showing the number of confirmed coronavirus cases at the time the president made those comments.

Kinzinger, R-Channahon, further tweeted a Jan. 14 update from the World Health Organization that “preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel coronavirus” after recent reports show the first case was known in November.

“My main point is once we get past this, the Communist Chinese government needs to be held accountable for suppressing information,” Kinzinger said in a phone interview March 18.

The congressman added the federal government also will need to be examined, but after the country gets through its coronavirus response:

“There needs to be accountability on all levels. What did we do right? What did we do wrong? What was known?

What could have been done?”

J. Stephen Morrison, director of the Global Health Policy Center at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told the Associated Press that China made “blunderous mistakes in the early six or seven weeks.”

“And then they came down hard with a gargantuan quarantine,” he said. Now, he said, China is suppressing “whatever additional dissident thoughts there may be on exactly what’s going on.”

Brzozowski’s campaign manager, David McCarver, said the tweets send a xenophobic message — noting it invites negativity toward Asian Americans — and “conveniently leave out Donald Trump’s accountability.” Before the virus spread in the U.S., Trump had downplayed its severity and noted the first case was “under control.”

Kinzinger disagreed.

“There’s no way I’m going to let China off the hook,” said Kinzinger, who is a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.

When asked about Trump referring to the COVID-19 as the “China virus,” Kinzinger said there is disinformation coming from China blaming the U.S. military for spreading the virus and retweeted in agreement with a Washington Post columnist who said the moniker is a good way to push back against the misinformation from Chinese officials.

“China doesn’t have a right to be outraged or offended, and they should pay a price,” Kinzinger wrote.

McCarver said Brzozowski would agree China should be held accountable for not taking action, but reiterated “he’s not holding Donald Trump accountable for his actions.”

McCarver also said more focus should be placed on relief for Americans.

Patients who have routine respiratory symptoms will be told to self-quarantine at home. Family members bringing non-critical patients to IVCH to be admitted will be encouraged to return home where they will receive telephone updates from

IVCH staff members.

No visitors IVCH also clarified the “no visitors” policy it recently announced. The only patients who are allowed to have someone in their rooms with them are: • Women in labor, who may choose one person to be with them for their entire stay.

• Pediatric patients and patients with disabilities, who may have a parent or legal guardian stay with them.

• Critically ill patients and surgery

patients, who may have someone stay with them who is authorized to make medical decisions.

No other visitors are allowed.

Decisions regarding visitors for patients near the end of life will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.

Jan M. Peterson Renaissance Scholarship established at IVCC OGLESBY — The Jan M. Peterson Renaissance Scholarship has been established at Illinois Valley Community College in memory of the former IVCC industrial arts instructor.

An anonymous donor recently contributed $25,000 to the IVCC Foundation to create the scholarship for students pursuing vocational studies.

Peterson died Oct. 22 at age 77 in Cody, Wyo. A graduate of LaSallePeru Township High School, he lived in Peru the majority of his life.

He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in industrial education from Illinois State University.

Peterson taught three years at L-P and five years at Purdue University.

He first taught at IVCC in 1976 and then full-time from 1995 to 2006 as basic manufacturing/tool and die instructor.

A gifted machinist, Peterson was also an award-winning wildlife sculptor. He lived his last 10 years in Wyoming near the mountains he loved.

His brother, Lyle Glen Peterson, was a longtime industrial arts instructor at Streator High School,

and their father, Norman, taught industrial arts at IVCC predecessor LPO Junior College for 25 years until his death in 1966. Aside from Lyle, Jan is survived by sister, Gail Jan Peterson Peterson Kozel of Peru.

“This scholarship means a lot to Gail and myself,” said Lyle. “It is a great legacy for my brother and a great opportunity for young students.”

The $750 scholarship will be awarded for the first time this fall.

To qualify, students must be registered in one of the following certificate or degree programs: Certified Production Technician (CPT), engineering technology, Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC), industrial maintenance, electrician, machinist tool and die making, manufacturing technology, process operations, welding or renewable energy.

They and others from around the state will be honored at an April 14 banquet.

Patel is the IVCC Foundation’s 21st Century Scholars Society Co-scholar, vice president of Bio Club, a member of Chem Club and

president of PTK. She is a peer tutor and an emergency room volunteer and is studying to become a physician.

Stoens is a 21st Century Merit Scholar, an officer of PTK and Chem Club and a member of the Red Cross Club. He volunteers with River Valley Players and Lostant Youth Baseball Association and is studying to become an electrical engineer.
