Four tenures, two retirements OK’d by IVCC Board of Trustees Student body getting younger; college to lease CASE IH tractor OGLESBY — The Illinois Valley Community College Board of Trustees approved tenure for four faculty members March 14 and accepted with regret notices of retirement from Patty Williamson, director of Financial Aid, and Jean Batson-Turner, Human Services instructor and program coordinator.

Faculty ear ning tenure were Tammy Landgraf, early childhood education; Willard Mott, agriculture; Heather Knoblauch, nursing; and Andrew Seeger, world languages.

Tenure requires that faculty demonstrate exemplary teaching, contributions to the college and community, and involvement with professional organizations.

Batson-Turner, who led human services since its inception in 2002, will retire May 31.

Williamson, financial aid director since 2009, will retire June 30.

Non-tenured faculty contracts have been renewed with Tracey Antle, nursing; David Barnes, economics; Jessie Bouxsein, nursing; Nicholas Fish, EMS; Jean Forst, English and reading; Amber Fox, accounting; Kevin Hermes, criminal justice; and Taylor Myers, nursing.

The board also learned: • Julia “Kathy” Hart has been hired as Institutional Research/ Information Technology programmer analyst.

• Resignation letters have been received from the Assessment Center’s Julie Fahning, effective April 25; Adult Education’s Vita Covarrubias; and part-time Spanish instructor Ruben Alvarado, effective May 13.

• A pair of change orders totaling $8,882 bring total cost of the Building E AHU-Chiller replacement to $1,106,882.

• The agriculture program anticipates arrival of a CASE IH Magnum 340 tractor by April 1. The leased tractor, to be used by ag faculty and students, was made available by CNH Industrial and its local dealer, Stoller International of Ottawa.

• IVCC’s Rho Omega Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa was named a 2019 REACH Chapter and will receive special recognition in the form of five graduation stoles to be worn during commencement by PTK officers. REACH recognizes chapters excelling in membership development. The two-year college honorary society said 91 percent of its members complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college, compared to 38 percent of students nationally. Eric Schroeder and Aseret Loveland are Rho Omega advisers.

• IVCC will receive a $10,000 “All Learning Counts” initiative grant from Lumina Foundation. The program works to ensure post-secondary learning from the military, work and other experiences counts toward academic credentials. Of 74 applicants, IVCC was one of 28 — and one of just four community colleges — to receive funding.

• A total of 1,038 students from 18 schools attended the annual Career Fair at IVCC March 8. There were also 168 presenters and 25 volunteers.

“Every year this program underscores how lucky we are to work with

our friends from Starved Rock Associates for Vocational and Technical Education (SRAVTE) and the Building and Construction Trades and Contractors Association. The Labor Management Group set up equipment on east campus and sponsored a business after-hours with IVAC the night before,” IVCC President Jerry Corcoran said.

• The Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) Northwest Region meeting will be at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, April 3, at IVCC. A tour will begin at 5:15 p.m. and the meeting will include a presentation on IVCC’s MIMIC program and Women in Technology by Dorene Data, computer aided design instructor.

• IVCC’s 28th annual job fair will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 11, in the gym.

• The college’s 23rd annual employee recognition event will be at 4 p.m.

Thursday, April 18, at Grand Bear Lodge.

• The annual LPN pinning ceremony will be at 5 p.m. Monday, July 22, in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.

• About 240 junior high and high school students engaged in handson learning at the third annual STEAM conference in IVCC’s gym March 12. The event was sponsored

by LaMoille High School and Superintendent Jay McCracken.

Schools also often take what they’ve seen at the STEA²M Conference and return home to use it in their curriculum.

“This is my first time here, but this is a great opportunity for our students to participate in hands-on presentations and explore different areas of science and technology,” JFK teacher Julia Toller said.

“I enjoy how our students can explore hands-on activities, and it helps them think outside of the box,” Lostant teacher Tricia Haynes said.

Jay McCracken, interim superintendent for LaMoille and the former superintendent for Putnam County and Hall High School, said education has had to adapt in order to provide more direct pathways for stu-

dents, particularly those not bound for college.

“We believe STEA²M education is immensely important for our young people, and this conference wonder-

fully compliments our Career Start program that’s intended to equip our students with the skills they need to successfully enter into a well-paid career,” he said.

OGLESBY — Hundreds of students and staff from schools across the Illinois Valley gathered Tuesday at IVCC to participate in the third annual STEA²M Conference presented through the efforts of the LaMoille School District.

Featuring many presentations in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering, art, agriculture and math (STEA²M), both students and educators were given the opportunity to explore their interests throughout the day.

“The elements of STEA²M have become so important to the future of our students. We hope what they’re exposed to today will inspire them towards a future and career they’re both interested in and enjoy,” LaMoille teacher Carol Darveau said.

“This conference has also been of tremendous help to my students because it’s taught them how to work together to successfully organize a complicated event,” she added.

Participating in the campuswide event were attendees from Hall, Lostant, LaMoille, DePue, Putnam County, Oglesby, Waltham, Bureau Valley, JFK, Holy Cross, Princeton, Neponset and St. Mary’s schools.

“This event is helpful in that it helps our students to learn how to collaborate and use their brains in different ways than they do in school,” Maricelle Ellena, a teacher at Putnam County Junior High School, said.

The morning’s keynote speaker was Jason Marquis of Marquis Energy. He shared his family’s history in the area, guided the students through a series of challenging puzzles, and gave them advice on what’s needed to be successful.

“Having a growth mindset and knowing how to learn is important, and resilience is a key factor,” he said.

Children’s painting party with Lori McCarter at the Reddick Mansion OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion will host a children’s painting party from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 24. Lori McCarter, local artist and experienced party host, will instruct attendees as they complete their “Bunny Tails” painting.

The painting features an Easter/ spring theme of bright-colored polka dots and a floppy-eared bunny.

According to McCarter, “This piece will be done with step-by-step instruction and as much help as needed to help each young artist go home with their own original piece of art to proudly display. We will focus on fun and friendship, and enjoying a spring afternoon together.”

Everything will be provided to complete the paintings that afternoon. The paintings will be done on an 11-by-14-inch wrapped canvas that will be ready to hang — no framing necessary.

Snacks and beverages will be provided, and the artists may bring a treat to share, if they like. McCarter also recommends that old clothes or a paint shirt be worn.

Illinois Valley Community College to host ag open house Spring event will take place Friday, April 5 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its agriculture spring open house for all prospective students and parents from 8:45 a.m. to noon Friday, April 5, in Rooms CTC124-125.

Guests will interact with current students and faculty, hear an overview on the revitalized program, tour campus and participate in an activity in the ag lab. Enrollment,

financial aid and scholarship information will be provided.

In two years, the program, led by instructor Willard Mott, has grown to more than 25 students taking at least one ag course, 10 new classes, two new ag degrees and five parttime instructors. “Career opportunities in agriculture are wide-ranging; it’s a great time to get in on our rapidly growing program,” Mott said.

TONICA — The new Casey’s General Store construction highlights the issues of drainage in Tonica.

The topic became a point of discussion at the Tonica Village Board meeting Monday night.

“That was one of the things I pointed out to the engiKevin neers when they Sluder were designing the building,” said vil- Tonica village president lage engineer Jack Kusek, indicating that the project needs work on drainage control.

Knowing the issue existed, the village had addressed it in project approval talks.

“That was one of the sticky points before we OK’d anything, was, ‘You need to fix the drainage because you’re going to be unloading a lot of water,’” Village Presi-

dent Kevin Sluder said.

Marc Lemrise of public works said there had just been an old drain discovered in that area, which would have to be looked into. Nevertheless, he said, “That’s not going to be adequate to drain that whole field.”

Already, the village has begun to hear complaints about the runoff water.

Sluder said a resident reported that all the water was running his direction and getting into his yard.

“It’s going into that guy’s yard, and it doesn’t go anywhere,” Sluder said.

Drainage is not just an issue in this location, but in different areas around town.

“Ditch it,” Sluder said, suggesting areas around town might have to be ditched in order to control drainage, to direct it away from the roads and from residents’ property.

“The ditches are going to have to start coming back,” he added.

“We don’t want that water getting onto our new roads and destroying them,” Sluder said. “Definitely don’t want to hear there’s water getting into people’s houses.”

Drainage problem brought up at village board meeting

LOSTANT — David K. Williams, 56, of Lostant passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 13, 2019, at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Born Sept. 4, 1962, in Ladd to Keith and Janice (Trevier) Williams, he married Lorene “Lori” Smith on Dec. 1, 1990, at the Lostant United Methodist Church.

He was a graduate of Hall Township High School. He worked in earlier years as a cook at Holiday Inn in Peru. He worked as a welder at Double R since 1989 and also worked for Country Catering.

He was a trustee for the Hope Town Cemetery Board. He was an organ donor. He loved to play poker and ride his Harley.

Meals are available to senior citizens 60 plus at no cost, but donations are appreciated. The meal program is partly funded by donations, so they have a suggested donation of $5 per meal. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m.

LaSalle County Historical Society programming will kick off March 24 LASALLE — The LaSalle County Historical Society will be kicking off its 2019 programming on Sunday, March 24.

Heinz Dietrich Suppan will present a program on the Indian Creek Masacre, which took place May 21, 1832, near present day Earlville. Sixteen settlers were killed by Potawatomi Indians. He will also tell the story of Rachel and Sylvia Hall, the two sisters who were taken captive during the massacre.

Suppan is a local author and teacher who has authored books centered around prominent LaSalle County history, including his book “Indian Creek Macacre! In the Shadow of the Blackhawk War.” The program will start at 1:30 p.m. at the Heritage Center, 208 Clark St. in Utica. No reservations are required.

The program is included with admission to the museum; there is no charge for Society members. For more information, call 815-667-4861.
