Art returns; board hires a part-time instructor BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — Almost three years after the Tonica School District cut the program, art is making a return as an internal curriculum.

The district welcomes Vanessa Goslin as its new part-time art instructor, hired on as a long-term substitute due to her employment being approved halfway through the school year. “It looks like she’s been teaching art in some form for 10 years,” said board president Al Leffelman. He also indicated that, should the curriculum be a success and the district remain able to offer it the next year, Goslin could be considered to fill the role again. “I’d just like to congratulate the board on bringing back art,” Leffelman said. “I was around when these programs were let go. It was

It was previously stated that the availability of the Young Rembrandts program will not be implicitly affected by the return of an official art curriculum, but that the program would be able to meet at the building so long as it remains viable. The art curriculum currently runs on Tuesdays and Fridays, and costs of implementation are offset by grants.

STANDARD — Providing help and comfort can be complicated, but other times it can be surprisingly simple. With the latter in mind, volunteers at the Putnam County Community Center (PCCC) have recently begun making “fidget quilts.” A fidget quilt, also known as a “busy blanket,” is a small, lap-sized quilt adorned with items that, when played, or fidgeted with, can provide dementia and autism patients with stimulation and a relief of pent-up anxiety. Common items sewn to the panels of the colorful quilts include buttons, zippers, pockets, ribbons, bows, Beanie Babies, key chains, fringe, jingle bells, loops, lacing, beads and anything else that could be safely played with. “My mother had Alzheimer’s, and she’d just lay in bed with her hands folded and nothing to do. I wish I’d have had something like this for her to use,” Carol Monaco, of McNabb, said. The group of several volunteers began in December and is working with donated fabric and materials. As news of their creations has

spread, the demand is growing. As some volunteers piece together and sew the body of the 18-inch by 24-inch quilts, others are choosing and pinning selected items in place before they’re finally secured. While quilts are usually made with aesthetics and warmth in mind, the group enjoys the fun of selecting vibrant color and texture combinations, as well as searching for engaging, fidget-worthy embellishments. “You’re helping them keep busy and giving a purpose, something for them to do,” Shauna Greenwood, of the PCCC, said. Dementia patients, as well as those who are autistic, commonly suffer from agitation and anxiety. Providing them with something to focus their hands on can give an outlet and a relief of stressful energy and emotions. Fidget quilts can provide Alzheimer’s sufferers, who are unable to properly convey their need for stimulation, with easy and safe assistance. “They’re fun to make, and we’re hoping our purpose can help people who need it,” Kathy Van Benning, of Granville, said. For anyone who’d like to join, donate materials, or request a fidget quilt, the group meets weekly from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursdays at the PCCC.

KAREN SONS TONICA — Karen M. (Cabal) Sons, 75, of Tonica died Wednesday morning, Jan. 16, 2019, at OSF St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. She was born Aug. 16, 1943, in Spring Valley to George and Bertha (Appel) Cabal. She married Kenneth R. Sons on Sept. 15, 1962, at St. John the Baptist Church in Lostant. She was a graduate of Tonica High School, Class of 1961. Until her retirement she worked as a banquet server at Starved Rock Lodge. She was a member of Holy Family Church and Tonica American Legion Auxiliary, a former member of the Tonica Fire Department Firettes and a life-long Cubs fan. She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Brenda (Randy) Burkart of Peru and Tammi (Michael) Martyn of Oglesby; one son, Anthony (Lisa) Sons of Wenona; seven grandchildren, Brett and

BY ZACHARY J. PRATT news@tonicanews.com TONICA — It was only a few years ago that Tonica School District’s financial situation was dire, forcing it to cut programs. Current reports paint the district’s present situation in a much more positive light. Halfway through the school year, district financial consultant James Whitmore presented three years of figures to the school board, so its members could see the district’s progression. The current outlook: positive, but with a caveat. “Everything’s still looking good for right now,” said Whitmore, who previously served as interim superintendent as the district began its climb back upward. He pointed to the education, working cash, and TORT funds, growing this fiscal year. TORT, especially, is one he drew attention to, noting that it had been cause for concern a year ago and had necessitated moving money into it from unrestricted funds. The fund now contains $81,000. Whitmore pointed out that it looks like the transportation fund is dropping but that the numbers are skewed by an external force, one with which districts have become well-acquainted: the state simply has not made its payments. “All other funds from the state are being paid on time, except

Illinois State Police Director Leo P. Schmitz commissioned 59 troopers Dec. 30 during the Cadet Class 128 graduation ceremony at Hope Church in Springfield. for transportation,” he said. “It’s very disappointing when the state is telling everybody that they’ve paid, when in reality they haven’t.” The other element of note was the building fund, the caveat in the overall positive outlook. “We’re concer ned about the building fund,” Whitmore said. The fund was hit by emergencies early on, which should have been able to be addressed with health life safety money. But that requires time for amendments to be accepted, and the repairs needed to be taken care of immediately. At least some costs, Whitmore said, could be drawn from the healthy TORT fund, such as the intercom system, which qualifies thanks to its association with security. Whitmore indicated that the district could put “that $16,000 back into the building fund, where it’s most needed,” an option that would not have existed a year earlier. In other news, the board has approved authority to issue working cash fund bonds, but has stressed that it has no intention of following through on that authority. The approval simply allows the district to sell the bonds if necessary. “It’s not taking out the money, spending it, anything like that,” said board president Al Leffelman. “It’s just approving our ability.”

The Elks Organization has been working with physically challenged children since 1928 and this is one of the 17 clinic locations throughout Illinois. The clinic is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development. ‘Growing Together’ educational spring seminar will be offered at IVCC OGLESBY — The University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener and Master Naturalist Programs, along with Illinois Valley Community College, will host an all-day spring seminar on Saturday, Feb. 23, at the IVCC Peter Miller Community Technology Center. This seminar, which is open to the public, will focus on a variety of horticultural and natural resources topics. The seminar will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a keynote address by Brook McDonald of the Conservation Foundation, and will be followed by four educational sessions. Sixteen classes will be offered that day, covering such topics as restoration of natural landscapes, sustainable landscaping, Illinois geology, new cultivars for perennials, wildlife photography, native plants and many others.

Attendees will be able to choose one of four available classes per session. The seminar will conclude at 3:30 p.m. A registration fee of $40 includes the keynote address, four educational sessions, a continental breakfast and lunch. Vendors, offering goods of interest to gardeners and outdoor enthusiasts, will have items for sale during the duration of the day. Attendees will also have the chance to win a variety of door prizes.
