Message from the Mayor reetings,

Although heavy rain postponed the annual Batavia Community Fireworks Show from July 4 to July 5, nothing could dampen the community's spirit. The rescheduled show drew an outstanding crowd, and many residents who attended commented that this year's celebration was a wonderful reminder of Batavia's enduring patriotic tradition. Patriotism has long been woven into the fabric of our community. From fireworks and family picnics to ceremonies honoring the men and women who have served our nation, Batavia has always taken pride in celebrating America's history and the values that unite us. Our community fireworks tradition dates back more than 75 years. In the early 1950s, following World War II and during the Korean War, members of the Batavia Fire Department, led by Chief Fred "Bud" Richter, volunteered to organize a community fireworks display. With less than $150 in donations, they launched the first show on the grounds of the then-new Batavia High School athletic fields near Illinois Avenue. What began as a modest community celebration quickly grew into a beloved annual tradition. Today, the fireworks are launched from the Mooseheart farm fields south of Batavia High School, drawing thousands of spectators who gather throughout the surrounding area to celebrate Independence Day together. Over the past seven decades, the Batavia Fireworks Show has become one of our community's signature events. The show itself is funded through donations from residents and local businesses, and it remains a gift from the community to the community. Behind the scenes, the event is made possible each year by a dedicated team of volunteers who plan and coordinate every aspect of the celebration. Several longtime members of the Fireworks Committee have shared that they plan to step down following many years of service. We sincerely thank them for their dedication and invite community members who would like to help continue this cherished tradition to consider joining the committee. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Bataviafireworks.org Another noticeable change taking place downtown is the removal of the historic stone chimney that stood on North River Street. After evaluation, the chimney was determined to be structurally unsafe and was carefully dismantled under the supervision of the City's Building Department. At the same time, several improvements are underway along North River Street, including new North River Street Plaza with public restrooms, enhanced access to the Fox River Trail system for pedestrians and cyclists, and other improvements that will better accommodate the popular Saturday morning Batavia Farmers' Market. As always, thank you for your continued support of our community. I hope you enjoy the remainder of the summer and all that Batavia has to offer as we head into the beautiful fall season.

Residential leaf collection programs The City of Batavia offers two leaf collection options for residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bills. CURBSIDE VACUUM LEAF COLLECTION This program provides up to three collection opportunities per residence, weather permitting. Program Reminders • Rake leaves to the parkway by 6 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled pickup week. Collection occurs rain or shine. • Crews make one pass only during each round. Leaves placed out after your area has been serviced will not be picked up until the next scheduled collection. • Rake leaves into long, low piles within 6 feet of the curb and off the street. Do not rake leaves into alleys or onto roadways, as this may block storm drains or cause hazardous conditions. • Keep leaf piles clear of debris such as sticks, bags, trash, or other yard waste. Contaminated piles may not be collected. • Do not place piles near parked cars, mailboxes, trees, utility poles or boxes, hydrants, or signs.

• Multiple crews operate throughout the city. Larger vacuum trucks service through streets, while smaller units are used for cul-desacs, “bubbles,” and dead ends. • Brush and limbs must be placed separately from leaves and only during scheduled brush collection weeks. The final citywide brush collection is scheduled for the week of December 1. • Ornamental grasses, corn stalks, and plants should be placed in yard waste bags and set out with regular refuse (see below). Daily progress maps and updates will be posted once the program begins at www.bataviail.gov. LEAF BAG COLLECTION PROGRAM From Dec. 1 through Dec. 31, residents may place leaves in brown

Kraft yard waste bags for collection on their regular refuse day without a sticker. • Yard waste bags only — cans will not be accepted during this period. • Bags should contain leaves only. Do not mix in grass, sticks, or other yard waste. • Keep bags as dry as possible to avoid tearing or spoilage. ALTERNATE LEAF DISPOSAL OPTIONS • Use a mulching mower to shred leaves directly into the lawn for added nutrients. • Spread leaves around flower beds, trees, and shrubs to protect plants and enrich the soil. • Residents may continue to place leaves and other yard waste in stickered bags or cans through November 30 for weekly pickup on their regular refuse day. Enjoy free Concerts in the Park with the Batavia Community Band Celebrate the sounds of fall with the Batavia Community Band during two free Concerts in the Park this season. Performances will be held Sunday, Sept. 6, and Sunday, Oct. 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Peg Bond Center along the Batavia Riverwalk. In the event of inclement weather, concerts will move indoors to the City Council Chambers at Batavia City Hall. Audiences can enjoy a lively mix of musical selections, including traditional marches, Broadway favorites, patriotic tunes and other familiar classics. The concerts are designed for all ages, making them a perfect way to spend a relaxing

afternoon by the Fox River. Bring a lawn chair or blanket or simply enjoy the music from the lawn. Founded in 2013, the Batavia Community Band is a volunteer ensemble operating under the City of Batavia. Now in its 13th season, the band includes more than 60 musicians from Batavia and neighboring communities who share a passion for making music. Under the direction of retired Batavia High School band director John Heath, the group performs at community events and celebrations throughout the year. The Batavia Community Band welcomes

new members of all experience levels. There is no membership fee to participate, and all concerts are free to attend. Brush collection continues Curbside brush collection is available to Batavia residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. The program runs seven times a year, and your collection week may vary each month. SET-OUT GUIDELINES Brush must be at the curb by 7 a.m. on the Monday of your scheduled collection week, but not earlier than the weekend before. Crews will make one pass only through each neighborhood. Brush placed out after crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled date. COLLECTION NOTES • Crews aim to complete each side of town by Friday, depending on volume. • This program is intended for homeowner yard work and minor storm debris. Special collections are rare and will be announced at bataviail.gov. • Brush from private landscaping or tree services must be removed by the contractor. If your brush was out on time but not collected by Friday, please contact the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 by the following Monday. How to recycle your old batteries The City of Batavia Offices often get questions about battery recycling or disposals. While City Hall and Batavia Public Works no longer accept batteries for recycling, they may be dropped off at the Kane County Recycles Center at 517 Fabyan

Dispose household hazardous waste with front door collection service The City of Batavia offers a household hazardous waste collection service to its residents. The city’s third-party provider, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection. Residents can schedule a front door pickup by calling Clean Harbors at 866-466-5060 Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail and your call will be returned. For details about the program, or to submit an online request, please visit bataviail.gov.

Wipes clog pipes Only toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet. Even products labeled "flushable" can cause costly problems in the City's sewer system. Please dispose of the following items in the trash—not the toilet: • Disinfecting wipes, baby wipes and personal wipes • Paper towels • Feminine hygiene products (pads and tampons) • Plastic or latex items Unlike toilet paper, wipes and other non-flushable items do not break down quickly. They can catch on imperfections inside sewer pipes, collect debris and create blockages that may lead to sewer backups. These materials can also clog pumps and equipment at wastewater treatment facilities, resulting in expensive repairs and service disruptions. Help protect Batavia's sewer system by remembering one simple rule: if it isn't toilet paper, throw it in the trash.

Understanding water main breaks in Batavia

Water main breaks can happen suddenly and without warning. They are most often caused by natural ground movement, temperature fluctuations, or the gradual deterioration of underground pipes.

When a break occurs, the City of Batavia Water Division works quickly and safely to restore service while minimizing disruption to residents and traffic. The City appreciates the community’s patience and cooperation during these emergency repairs. Residents play an important role in helping City crews respond quickly. If you notice bubbling or pooling water in the street or parkway:

• Call the Water Division at 630-4542450 during regular business hours. • After hours, on weekends, or holidays, call the non-emergency police line at 630-454-2500.

What to do about a sewer back-up If you experience a sewer back-up, call the City of Batavia first at 630-454-2000 during business hours or 630-454-2500 after hours and on weekends. The problem may be in the City's sewer main rather than your private service line, potentially saving you the cost of an unnecessary plumbing service call. City staff are available 24/7 to respond and provide guidance. If damage occurs, contact your homeowner's insurance company promptly. Many policies do not include sewer back-up or sump pump coverage unless specifically added. Once a report is received, a crew is dispatched to investigate and determine whether a main break has occurred.

How Repairs Are Made If a water main break is confirmed, the City first contacts J.U.L.I.E. (Joint Utility Locating Information for Excavators) to mark nearby underground utilities such as gas, electric, cable, and telecommunications lines. This safety step must be completed before excavation begins, which can take several hours depending on the number of utilities involved. Once utilities are marked, the Water Division crew excavates the area to access the damaged pipe. Some small leaks can be sealed or clamped without shutting down water service. However, larger breaks often require a temporary water shutdown.

When possible, City staff notify affected residents door-to-door before water is turned off. Most shutdowns last between two and four hours and are limited to a single block or street. In rare cases, if a nearby shut-off valve fails to close properly, a larger area may temporarily lose service.

When Water Service Is Restored After repairs are complete, some residents in the affected area may notice temporary discoloration or sediment in their tap water. This discoloration, typically rust or minerals stirred up during the repair, is not harmful. To clear the water, run cold water from the lowest faucet in your home (often a basement sink or tub) until it runs clear. Do you have a fire sprinkler system? Annual Testing is Required Fire sprinkler systems are an essential safeguard for life and property — but they’re also highly complex. Because they connect directly to the municipal water supply, they must include protective devices to prevent contamination. One of the most important of these is a backflow prevention assembly, which must be tested annually to ensure it is working properly.

What Is Backflow Prevention? A backflow prevention device is a specially designed valve installed in a water system to keep contaminated water from flowing in the wrong direction. In a fire sprinkler system, this valve prevents water from the sprinkler pipes from entering the City’s drinking water system if pressure drops. In short, backflow prevention keeps clean water clean.

What Is Backflow? Backflow occurs when the normal flow of water is reversed due to a sudden drop or change in water pressure. When this happens, water from a potentially contaminated source—such as a fire sprinkler or irrigation system— can be drawn back into the clean, potable water supply.

Why Annual Testing Matters The City of Batavia requires that all backflow prevention assemblies on fire sprinkler systems be inspected and tested annually by a certified professional. This testing ensures the device functions properly and continues to protect the public water supply.

For example, if water pressure in the City’s system were suddenly reduced, stagnant water sitting in a sprinkler system could flow backward into the public drinking water network, creating a risk of contamination.

Peace Out Batavia! Community Mural The Batavia Park District is turning the walls of the new Peace Pedestrian Ramp into a vibrant celebration of community, creativity and connection with the Peace Out Batavia! mural. Following the completion of the City of Batavia's ADA-accessible bicycle and pedestrian ramp connecting the lower Fox River Trail to the Peace Bridge, the City gifted the structure

to the Batavia Park District, creating the opportunity for a one-of-a-kind public art installation. Designed as a large-scale paint-bynumber mural, Peace Out Batavia! invites residents, businesses and community organizations to help paint the artwork one panel at a time. Hundreds of community members are contributing to the

colorful mural, transforming the space into a lasting symbol of Batavia's welcoming spirit and artistic pride. Community painting opportunities continue throughout the project, with installation planned for spring 2027. Local trip highlights Batavia’s connection to

the Underground Railroad With support from the Batavia Depot Museum, a Batavia home on Elm Street was recently placed on the National Network to Freedom, a database of sites linked to the Underground Railroad. Learn more on a special Underground Railroad tour of the Tri-Cities on Sept. 19 led by Erica Krupa, the researcher who put this site on the map with support from the Batavia Depot Museum. Follow the story of the Underground Railroad through the Tri-Cities during an engaging exploration by bus and paddlewheel of local connections to the Underground Railroad. The Elm Street house was the home of John and Lucinda Cross family, one of the few Batavia locations with a confirmed and direct tie to the work of “resistance to enslavement through escape and flight” that the Network honors and preserves. Cross and his wife arrived in Illinois in 1839, and settled in Elba in Knox County to spread religion and abolition on the Northwest frontier. Cross was fervent in the cause of anti-slavery and boldly expressed his views on the injustice of the Illinois Black Codes, publicly vowing not to obey them, but instead to “harbor,

feed, and convey off Negroes.” When warned by the local justice of the peace that he would be arrested if he were caught, he responded, “That, sir, is just what I want.” The Cross family lived in Batavia by 1855, and purchased the Elm Street house in 1858. On Wednesday, Sept. 16, starting at 5 p.m., the annual Homecoming Parade will begin at the Wilson Street Entrance of Batavia High School, head east on Wilson Street to Lincoln Street, then head south on Lincoln Street to Main Street, then head west on Main Street to the Main Street Entrance of Batavia High School. (Please note that Wilson Street and Main Street, from Lincoln to BHS, will close at 4:40 pm.) The entire community is invited! If inclement weather occurs, the cancellation will be announced one hour before the scheduled start of the parade and posted on the BHS and District websites, as well as on Instagram and Facebook. Unfortunately, due to police regulations and logistics, the parade will not be rescheduled.

Batavia Public School District 101

Chip In Batavia breaks barriers for families in need Chip In Batavia supports students and families in Batavia Public School District 101 who are experiencing temporary housing challenges or qualify for the free or reduced-price lunch program. Our mission is to remove financial barriers so every student has the opportunity to succeed in school and participate in the same activities, programs and experiences as their peers. As students prepare to return to the classroom this fall, the need for support begins to grow once again — and Chip In, together with our community partners, is ready to help. Throughout the summer, Chip In assisted families in meaningful ways. We helped several families avoid eviction, awarded nine scholarships and 19 laptops to graduating seniors pursuing higher education and matched multiple

donors with families in great need of furnishings and even a lawnmower.

Because of generous community support, 10 families (33 individuals) were able to enjoy summer days together at the Batavia Quarry. Approximately 40 to 50 children living at Batavia Apartments celebrated with the always-popular Foam Party, and we also partnered with Funway to provide roller skating lessons for interested students. As the new school year begins, Chip In continues to offer its Adult Scholarship Program, helping low-income parents pursue education and training that lead to stable, rewarding careers. Whether the goal is earning a CDL, becoming a CNA or phlebotomist, obtaining a driver's license, completing a nursing program or pursuing automotive

Nominate the 2026 Batavia Citizen of the Year! The Citizen of the Year Award is given to a local resident whose service and dedication have made a significant contribution to the community. Criteria for the award are: • The nominee must reside, or have their business, in Batavia or Batavia Township. • The nominee must have assisted in an improvement or program of significant value to the Batavia community. • The improvement must be made as a result of a personal commitment and not substantially as a result of their primary employment or public responsibilities. • The nominee may not currently be on the Board of Directors of the Batavia Chamber of Commerce. • The nominee does not need to be a member of the Chamber. • The contributions of the nominee to the community should be of an extraordinary nature.

Nominations should be made in the form of a letter of recommendation to the Chamber of Commerce, no later than Friday, Nov. 6, stating the reasons why the individual being nominated is worthy of this honor. Citizen of the Year is selected from the nominations by a panel of previous Citizen of the Year honorees. The winner will be honored at the Inspire Celebration on April 29, 2027. Get excited for Tri Cities Canstruction! The Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles Area Chambers of Commerce are joining forces to launch the inaugural Tri Cities Canstruction, a large-scale design competition benefiting local food pantries. Under the theme Harmony for Hunger, teams will create music-inspired structures made entirely from canned food. The Tri-Cities Canstruction exhibit will be free and open to the public Friday, Feb. 19 through Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Waubonsee Community College’s Academic and Professional Center in Sugar Grove. Visitors can explore up to 18 imaginative structures built with thousands of cans and vote for the People’s Choice Award. At the conclusion of the event, all food will be

donated to local food pantries. Businesses, schools, organizations and community groups are invited to compete, sponsor, or support the event. Each team is required to work with an architect or engineer to help design and safely construct its structure. Applications are being accepted through Oct. 1 or before if all slots are filled. Guided group tours are also available for students and senior citizens. Immortalizing Mama Mallard Fine artist Maria Ananieva captures a Batavia slice of life in paint By Jamie Baker | Photos provided by Maria Ananieva

Fine artist Maria Ananieva first noticed a beautiful mama mallard duck and her brood in early April after Limestone Coffee & Tea owners Leah and Joy pointed the waterfowl out on the Batavia Public Library’s patio. Just like any home expertly crafted by a protective, avian mother, the mallard’s roost was comfortable, soft and feathery, nestled safely in one of the library’s planters. Knowing that overexposure may bring harm to the mama and her impending ducklings, Batavia Public Library employees decided to not put up a sign indicating the nest. Ananieva says the mallard blended in well with her surroundings and most people didn’t notice the nesting bird unless they already knew about her. As a barista at Limestone, Ananieva frequently talked with the customers who knew about Mama Mallard — most of them Batavia Public Library staff. Mama Mallard became a connection their little community rooted for and cared about. “We all chatted about how she is doing today and how long we think before the babies hatch,” she says. “I was surprised all the ducklings made it, which was of course a very heartwarming win for her and us.”

Her passion for conservation affords her a deep connection to animals and nature in general. “I also lead a vegan lifestyle and am fully on the animal’s side when it comes to protecting them,” she says. “I believe that learning more about wildlife can help us understand it more and what to do in situations where we can help versus what not to do.”

Ananieva’s love for waterfowl drew the artist and barista to Mama Mallard's family of ducks, granting her the opportunity to witness motherhood in the wild for the first time up close. “This was an amazing opportunity, and just being there often and following the process was very interesting, because you become invested in their wellbeing,” she says. “I was there when all the babies finally made the jump and followed mom into the Fox River — it was truly a memorable experience.” As an artist and contemplative thinker, Ananieva says she always ponders the “bigger” questions in

Mama Mallard’s journey inspired Ananieva to pick up her brushes and capture the moment on canvas. She brought the ducks to life in the grass with a blue sky above them, a choice inspired by where Ananieva imagines the family ended up after they started their journey on the river. The painting is entitled “Motherhood” and was proudly displayed at Limestone Coffee & Tea in Batavia for the month of July. The experience has been a rewarding one for Ananieva, all the folks at Limestone Coffee & Tea and the staff and visitors at the Batavia Public Library. She hopes the moments they shared with Mama Mallard inspire the community to become more curious about wildlife. Energy City Kubb hosting championship in Batavia Do you enjoy getting outside and learning a new yard game? Are you looking to meet new people and have some drinks? On Saturday, Sept. 5, Energy City Kubb will host its seventh annual Illinois Kubb Championship at the Batavia Moose Lodge baseball field. Between 20 to 30 teams from around the Midwest are expected to attend this event. Whether you have never played kubb before or only played a few times, organizers say the event is guaranteed to be a fun time for all participants. Players can be as competitive as they would like or attend to play casually and socially. Energy City Kubb has hosted kubb tournaments since 2019. The Illinois Kubb Championship will run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on

Sept. 5. Participants can sign up to play at www.energycitykubb. com/events. The cost per team is $50; catered lunch is available for an extra fee. Kubb is a lawn game played between two teams of two to six players. The game includes wooden blocks known as kubbs and a larger wooden block known as the king. The game's objective is to knock over the opposing team's kubbs and then the king by throwing batons.
