Members of the City Council and City staff had the opportunity to tour the recently completed upgrades and enhancements at Batavia’s Wastewater Treatment Facility. The tour, led by Batavia Wastewater Superintendent Zac Bonesz, highlighted the extensive modernization that has transformed the facility into one of the most advanced wastewater treatment plants in northern Illinois. The project was completed with significant financial assistance from the federal government.
The upgrades are designed to improve the plant’s efficiency, reliability, and environmental performance. Water treated and released from the facility flows into the Fox River, where downstream communities and organizations rely on it as part of their water supply. Batavia’s newly modernized wastewater treatment plant has already drawn interest from neighboring communities, with several municipalities contacting the City and Trotter and Associates to learn more about the project and similar system upgrades.
While Batavia continues investing in infrastructure that will benefit future generations, our community also takes pride in the unique moments and historical connections that have shaped the City over the years.
During a recent visit with students in Batavia Public School District 101 to discuss local government and City services, I was asked how many future presidents of the United States had visited Batavia before taking office, and there are two well-documented visits.
The first occurred on July 21, 1919, when a 79-vehicle military convoy traveling from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco passed through Batavia. The 62-day expedition was organized to study and map a potential
transcontinental highway system across the United States. Among the 295 personnel participating in the convoy was Dwight D. Eisenhower, then a U.S. Army captain who would later become President of the United States in 1952.
According to local accounts, members of the convoy stopped near the newly established Mooseheart campus to display military equipment for the children living there. Stories passed down through longtime residents also recall Eisenhower helping direct traffic at the intersection of Batavia Avenue and Wilson Street so the convoy could safely navigate the steep hill and continue north toward Geneva before heading west to DeKalb for the night.
The second future president to visit Batavia was John F. Kennedy, then a U.S. Senator, during a campaign stop on Oct. 25, 1960. Kennedy’s motorcade traveled south on Batavia Avenue in route to Aurora. His arrival coincided with the end of the school day at the former Batavia High School, which at that time was located near Wilson Street and Batavia Avenue. Large numbers of students gathered along the route to catch a glimpse of the future president. Students from nearby elementary schools, including Grace McWayne and Louise White, also were given time to make their way to the intersection before Kennedy’s arrival.
Batavia’s story continues to be one of progress, innovation, and community pride. From investing in critical infrastructure that protects our environment and supports future generations, to preserving and sharing the remarkable moments that connect our community to our nation’s history, these experiences remind us of the important role Batavia has played — and continues to play — in shaping a strong and vibrant future.

76th annual display to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary
On July 4, the Batavia Fireworks Committee invites you to join us at Engstrom Park, 326 Millview Dr., for Batavia’s 76th annual fireworks show at 9:30 p.m. The Batavia Community Band will play a patriotic concert at 8:30 p.m., and food trucks will be available.
The Batavia Fireworks Committee will again be hosting a trunk show this fall to help raise funds for next year’s fireworks show. Details will be in the September/October edition of The Batavia magazine.

The City of Batavia offers a household hazardous waste collection service to its residents. The City’s third-party provider, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc., will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection. Residents can schedule a front door pickup by calling Clean Harbors at 866-466-5060 Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail and your call will be returned. As warmer weather brings more bicyclists and riders onto Batavia streets, sidewalks, bike paths, and trails, the City of Batavia and the Batavia Police Department have launched a new summer education campaign focused on safety and awareness.
The “Roll Smart: Know the Code. Ride the Road.” campaign is designed to help residents better understand Batavia’s new e-mobility ordinances while promoting safe riding practices for all ages. The initiative provides information about the legal and safe use of electric bicycles, e-scooters, micromobility devices, and
other wheeled transportation devices throughout the community.
The campaign follows the City’s adoption of updated local regulations that establish where certain devices may be ridden, outline age and safety requirements, and clarify which highpowered devices are prohibited on public property. Educational topics throughout the summer include helmet and lighting requirements, roadway and sidewalk restrictions, trail etiquette, speed awareness, and guidance for parents navigating the growing variety of e-mobility devices
available for children and teens.
Throughout the summer, members of the Batavia Police Department and the City’s Active Transportation Advisory Commission are appearing at community events, including the Batavia Farmers’ Market, to answer questions and distribute educational materials. The campaign also features social media posts and short-form safety videos, including the return of popular student-led reels featuring Rotolo Middle School students.

If your residence experiences a sewer back-up please call the City first at 630-454-2000, or during non-business hours or weekends call the nonemergency number for the Batavia Police Department, 630-454-2500. The problem might be in the City’s main line. By calling the City first, it could save you the price of hiring a private plumber. If the problem is in your own service line, the City can provide guidance in hiring a plumber. The City has emergency response personnel 24 hours per day.

If you experience a sewer back-up follow these guidelines for repairs and clean-up.
• Always call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or possessions.
• The City of Batavia's insurance company will determine if the City is responsible for damages caused by a sewer backup.

Keep them out of the toilet
Help protect our sewer system by placing the following items in the trash—not the toilet:
• Disinfecting, baby, and personal wipes
• Paper towels
• Feminine hygiene products
• Plastic or latex items
These materials don’t break down like toilet paper. They can clog pipes, damage lift station pumps, and lead to costly sewer backups and repairs. Please flush only toilet paper; everything else belongs in the trash.
By ordinance, the City of Batavia limits the use of water for lawn sprinkling to:
• Even-numbered addresses on even-numbered calendar days.
• Odd-number address on oddnumbered calendar days.
• Watering must take place between the hours of 6-9 a.m. and 6-9 p.m. only.
Hand-held hose watering is permitted any time for flowers, gardens, lawns, trees and shrubs.
Watering of new sod or seeded lawns requires a free permit which can be obtained at the Community Development Department, 100 N. Island Ave. Please note: permits for sod/seed will not be issued during July and August.
Curbside residential brush collection is available to residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Please note that your collection week doesn’t occur on the same week each month; there are seven collections per season. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. the Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence. Brush placed out after crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.
The amount of brush that has been placed out citywide in any given month dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week. The collections are for homeowner trimming and meant to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season; special collections are done very rarely. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be posted on bataviail. gov. Brush/trimmings generated by a private service must be removed by that service and may not be put out for brush collection. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.
The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush:
• Maximum diameter is 6-inches, logs cannot be split; maximum length of limbs is 12-feet.
• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.

• Residents with limbs/brush exceeding the requirements for the program can contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.
• Residents in unincorporated areas should contact their township offices regarding brush collection services that may be available to them.

Weekly yard waste collection is currently underway. The season runs through Nov. 30. Each yard waste unit requires a refuse sticker. Stickers are available for purchase at several local outlets. A complete list is available at bataviail.gov/yardwaste.
Residents should place a refuse sticker on each generic yard waste bag or 32-gallon can and put bag/ can at the curb on their regular collection date. Yard waste is collected separately from regular refuse and recycling. Cans must be clearly labeled yard waste on the front, and a refuse sticker should be attached to the handle. Plastic bags cannot be used. Maximum capacity is 50 pounds per yard waste bag or container. Yard waste carts are also available for rent for a fee through Groot Industries. Refuse may not be mixed with yard waste.
Yard waste includes grass clippings; leaves; branches and brush; other yard and garden trimmings; vines, garden plants and flowers; weeds; tree droppings (pinecones and crabapples); and other similar organic waste materials. Residents may mix select food scraps with yard waste. Accepted food scraps include fruits and vegetables, breads, grains, pasta, and cereal, dairy and eggs (including eggshells, but no liquids) and coffee grounds, filters and tea bags.

This fall, give your kids the chance to stay active, make new friends and build confidence through youth soccer and softball programs.
Fall Energy City Soccer leagues for ages 3-8 introduce young athletes to the fundamentals of the game while teaching teamwork, coordination and sportsmanship in a fun and supportive environment. The developmental leagues for ages 3-4 and 5-6 play their games on Saturdays following a halfhour practice. Games begin Sept. 5.

Independence Day 2026 marks the semiquincentennial anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and Batavia Depot Museum is using a local perspective to honor the moment with the rest of the nation.
A small group of 56 men signed the Declaration, but it would take eight years and the lives of tens of thousands to settle the question of American independence. Many of Batavia’s early Euro-American settlers grew up hearing stories of the Revolutionary war from their parents and grandparents, but only one was a soldier in the Revolutionary War.
John Gowdy was born in Connecticut in 1759. He enlisted at only 17 years old and served three
terms of service. After the war, John farmed in Connecticut, married twice and raised a family. He was over 90 years old when he moved to Batavia to live near his grandchildren in 1852. He died in 1854 and is buried in the East Batavia Cemetery.
Gowdy was honored with a memorial stone at a graveside ceremony in 2004 by the Batavia
Historical Society, the City of Batavia, the Elias Kent Kane Chapter NSDAR, the Fox Valley Chapter SAR and the Kane County Genealogical Society.
The Museum commemorates the ongoing struggle to secure the rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness that were envisioned by the signers of the Declaration in 1776 with the exhibit, “To Secure These Rights.” Featuring Civil War era letters and military gear, military uniforms from WWI, WWII, and the Vietnam era, ribbons and souvenirs from the Grand Army of the Republic and more, this exhibit is a great way to kick off the summer. Admission to the museum is free, so be sure to stop by before this temporary exhibit closes on Aug. 9.
Starting Aug. 15, the museum’s fall exhibit, “In Harmony,” shares the charming stories of Batavians making music together. From school bands and church choirs, to formal and casual ensembles, we’re revisiting some of Batavia’s favorite musical communities through artifacts and photos from the Batavia Historical Society’s collection.

Batavia Public School District 101 (BPS101) has been honored with the Best Communities for Music Education designation from The NAMM Foundation for its outstanding commitment to music education.
BPS101 has received this award 12 times in the last 13 years, and it is one of only 31 districts in Illinois to receive the designation this year.
Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. To qualify for the designation, BPS101 answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the music programs. Responses were then verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.

staff and community share for the profound power and impact of music.

Step back in time during Batavia’s beloved Boo Boo Days, a nostalgic downtown tradition filled with vintage advertisements, retro cocktails, sidewalk sales, and small-town charm, happening July 10–12 during the annual Windmill City Festival weekend. Originally launched in 1956 as a simple sidewalk sale, the event officially carried the name “Boo Boo Days” through 1978.
Downtown merchants lined the sidewalks with clearance and overstock merchandise, creating a lively shopping experience that quickly became a cherished part of Batavia summers.
Today, Boo Boo Days continues to celebrate that vintage spirit while inviting visitors to explore downtown shops, discover special deals, and enjoy one of Batavia’s favorite summer traditions.
Cocktails in the Park returns Saturday, July 25, from 7–10 p.m. at Appleton Park for an evening of summer cocktails, live music, and community. As Batavia MainStreet’s largest annual fundraiser, Cocktails in the Park supports the programs and events that keep downtown Batavia vibrant year-round.
Advance admission tickets are $40 and include appetizers, live music, a take-home treat, and access to two photo ops. Guests may upgrade to the $350 Picnic Table Bundle, which includes a reserved picnic table, six admission tickets, and six drink/raffle tickets.
Also returning in 2026 is the VIP Experience Raffle, giving one lucky winner and up to five guests skipthe-line entry, a front-row reserved
picnic table, upgraded décor, delivered appetizers, professional photos, drink tickets, and Downtown Batavia swag. Guests receive one raffle entry for every $25 donation to Batavia MainStreet. Admission tickets and VIP raffle entries are on sale now at downtownbatavia.com.

Summer is in full swing at Batavia Public Library, and there is still plenty of time to join the fun! Our Plant a Seed, Read Summer Reading Program continues through August 3, so if you haven’t signed up yet—or if you’re working toward your next reading goal—there’s still time to participate. Summer reading is a wonderful way to discover new books, build reading habits, and stay connected with our library community.
Summer is also the perfect season to explore beyond the Library. Whether you’re planning a family outing, a day trip, or looking for something new to do close to home, be sure to check out our Explore More Illinois and Museum Adventure Pass programs. These resources provide free or discounted admission to museums, cultural attractions, and destinations throughout the region, making it easy to turn a summer day into an adventure.
We are also excited to announce the addition of ASLdeafined to our collection of online learning resources. This engaging platform makes it easy for learners of all ages to study American Sign Language (ASL) at their own pace. Whether you are learning ASL for personal enrichment, to communicate with family members, or to build new skills, ASLdeafined offers an accessible and interactive way to get started.
Many of the great things we offer are made possible through the generosity of our community partners. A heartfelt thank you goes to the Friends of the Batavia Public Library for funding our new 3-D printer, which will expand opportunities for creativity, innovation, and hands-on learning. Behind the scenes, we are continuing preparations for the Library renovation project that begins in early November. Over the coming months, staff will be working with contractors, architects, movers, and community partners to ensure a smooth transition into construction. While some services and spaces may shift during the project, we are committed to keeping the Library open throughout the entire 12-month renovation so we can continue serving Batavia. The work will take place in phases, and we will provide regular updates to keep everyone informed about what to expect.
This renovation represents an exciting investment in the future of our library and community. We look forward to creating more welcoming, accessible, and flexible spaces while continuing to provide the collections, programs, and services you rely on every day.

The Batavia, Geneva, and St. Charles Chambers of Commerce are launching the inaugural Tri-Cities Canstruction, a large-scale design competition benefiting local food pantries.
Hosted at Waubonsee Community College, teams will build massive structures entirely from canned food as part of the international Canstruction movement. The free public exhibit will feature up to 18 imaginative sculptures constructed with thousands of cans that will later be donated to local food pantries. The event combines creativity, engineering, architecture, and community collaboration while raising awareness about food insecurity in Kane County. Artist Sarah Reaves pulls inspiration from life’s quiet currents, shaping her work with instinct and raw emotion to evoke the demonstrative nature of even the most subtle of human mannerisms.
“I create figurative sculptures inspired by a lifelong fascination with human expression — the gesture, the presence, and the fleeting moments that connect us,” she says. “A genuine laugh, a subtle smile, a spark in the eyes — these are the moments I aim to capture. My process begins with a sketch, an idea, and a block of clay. I shape intuitively, pushing and pulling until the form feels resolved, then hollowing and refining.”
Reaves’ work ebbs and flows in scale based on each series she creates, showcasing her unique style that marries insight and imagination.
“One of the most challenging projects I’ve worked on is a series called ‘ELEMENTS,’ where I personified earth, air, fire, and water as human figures,” she says.
“I wanted each one to physically embody its element, so I pushed myself to incorporate those characteristics into the forms — like giving Earth a flowing, wood-like textured dress or making Water’s hair feel weightless and fluid.”
Incorporated into each piece within the "ELEMENTS" series is a symbol of its corresponding elemental sign,
with one of the sculpts featuring a hidden compartment.
Beyond her personal work, Reaves has been a resident artist with Water Street Studios since 2025 and cofounded the Batavia Art League. “I’ve…studied with some incredible sculptors, including a recent 10day workshop in a medieval, 15th century walled village (Monte Castello di Vibio) in central Italy," she says. "Teaching at Water Street is something I’d love to step into eventually.”
Water Street is naturally a large part of Reaves’ artistic world, especially since it was a ceramics class she attended at the studio that first ignited her passion for sculpting clay. “The creative energy there is palpable — it’s welcoming, inspiring, and deeply rooted in community,” she says. “Living in Batavia, it always felt like a place I was meant to land.”
Recently, Reaves has been working on a new series of pieces that reflect a variety of features and facets. “One
is a wall series that combines three-dimensional faces with flatter, patterned hair using underglaze transfers, stencils, and water etching,” she says. “They’re a bit playful and interact with each other. The other series is more focused on realistic faces — I’ve started one piece called Greta. I do tend to name my sculptures. Once you’ve created a face, it feels like they need an identity. All of my work comes from imagination — I don’t use reference photos — so each piece really develops its own personality.”
Within the community, Reaves recognizes the impact of art as a necessary connection between individuals and society. “It reflects what’s happening around us and gives us a way to express things that words sometimes can’t,” she says. “It can challenge ideas, tell stories, and create connection. And honestly, if it can make someone smile or feel something unexpected — that’s everything.”
n Originally from California, Sarah Reaves grew up in New Mexico, studied at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia, and spent over 25 years in Chicago as an art director and creative director. In 2020, she shifted fully to ceramics, studying at Water Street Studios and then for five years at Waubonsee Community College. Reaves lives in Batavia with her husband, their dogs Auggie and Merle, and sculpts at Water Street Studios.
