As Batavia moves into the warmer months, residents will notice our streets, trails, and downtown spaces becoming busier. With that increase in activity comes an important reminder: whether you are walking, driving, or riding a bicycle, safety and courtesy matter. Riders of bicycles and other wheeled devices must follow the same traffic rules that apply to vehicles. The Batavia Police Department has the authority to issue citations for unsafe riding, and reckless behavior can result in fines. Please ride responsibly and help keep our streets safe for everyone.
Spring and summer also provide a good opportunity to reflect on how much Batavia’s downtown has evolved over the years. Many of the changes we enjoy today began more than five decades ago during the administrations of Mayors Arthur Swanson and Robert Brown. In the early 1960s, a fire department training exercise removed several aging buildings near west Wilson, First, and Water streets, creating opportunities for redevelopment.
Under Mayor Swanson’s leadership, the southern portion of Depot Pond, from what is now Houston Street south to First Street, was filled and prepared for new retail development.
Those early decisions helped shape the downtown we know today. Over the decades, Batavia added key civic landmarks including the Batavia Public Library, the City Government Center, and the reconstructed Wilson Street bridge. Community amenities followed, including the Riverwalk, Peg Bond Center, the Flag Day Monument, the Depot Museum, and improvements to Depot Pond that allow for both winter skating and summer recreation.
Downtown redevelopment has continued into more recent years. The East Wilson Street hill area has seen significant changes following the removal of older structures near the former Louise White School site. The North River Street area has also transformed, becoming home to the popular Saturday morning Batavia Farmers’ Market, now one of the most well-attended community events in our city’s history. The addition of the Boardwalk Shops at Wilson and River streets has further enhanced the vibrancy of downtown.
From time to time, longtime Batavia residents who have moved away return for a visit. Many share how impressed they are with the improvements they see, especially the continued enhancements along the Fox River through the downtown corridor.
Looking ahead, additional proposals are currently under review by the City’s Community and Economic Development Department. These include potential retail and residential developments within the block bordered by south Batavia Avenue, First Street, Water Street, and Main Street. Plans are also being explored to revitalize the currently closed convenience center at Wilson and Prairie streets.
Batavia’s downtown has always been a place that reflects both our history and our future. As these projects move forward, we remain committed to thoughtful development that preserves the character of our community while creating new opportunities for residents, businesses, and visitors to enjoy all that Batavia has to offer.

River Street Plaza bringing new energy to downtown Batavia
Construction is now underway on the City of Batavia’s River Street Plaza, a new public gathering space designed to enhance downtown activity and create a welcoming place for residents and visitors to connect. The plaza is being built on the former Tin Shop site at 102 N. River Street and will support community events, the Batavia Farmers Market, and everyday use while strengthening the River Street corridor.
Designed with accessibility, comfort, and placemaking in mind, the plaza will feature accessible paving, landscaping, lighting, and site furnishings, along with ample seating to encourage people to linger before and after downtown events or pause during a Fox River Trail ride. Additional amenities include planter benches, bike racks, a bike repair station, public art elements, and native pollinator plantings.
A limestone feature that also functions as a retaining wall will help define the space and protect adjacent properties. Decorative screening elements—such as a punched metal fence and a trellis with climbing plants—will soften the plaza edges and provide flexibility as nearby properties redevelop over time.
A prefabricated, self-cleaning public restroom will also be installed as part of the project. The unit was previously purchased by the City
and is currently under construction at the manufacturer’s facility. Once the site is prepared, the restroom will be installed on a concrete pad and connected to utilities. The facility will include an exterior bottle filler and water fountain, providing a longrequested amenity for Farmers’ Market patrons and downtown visitors.
Construction will take place in phases, beginning with site preparation, followed by restroom installation and completion of plaza features. The City is coordinating work to open the plaza as early as possible this year.
The Batavia City Council approved a construction contract with Landmark Contractors, Inc. for plaza sitework in an amount not to exceed $618,000, including contingency. The project is funded through Tax Increment Financing District 3, with combined plaza and restroom costs remaining within the City’s approved budget.
The River Street Plaza advances Batavia’s Downtown Plan and 2024–2028 Strategic Action Plan, supporting goals related to placemaking, economic vitality, and quality of life— helping create a vibrant downtown destination and momentum for future redevelopment along River Street. When to water lawn and new sod
The City of Batavia has water conservation regulations to ensure that there is a continuous adequate water supply for drinking, bathing and fire protection. All businesses and residents are encouraged to comply with the city's water conservation ordinance.
Lawn watering is permitted from 6 a.m. - 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. Even-numbered street addresses may water on even-numbered dates; odd-numbered street addresses can water on odd-numbered dates. The city provides additional sprinkling opportunities for property owners planting new seed or sod in a large area, such as full lots. A permit is required. There is no fee for the permit, but a building application must be submitted to the City of Batavia Community Development Department. You can find the form at bataviail.gov/page/ sod-permit, or visit the Community Development Department, City Hall, 100 N. Island Ave, Batavia. Call 630-454-2700 for questions. The permit allows you to water sod or new seed for 8 hours continuously the first day of planting. Small patches should be hand watered. For the next 9 days, lawn sprinkling is permitted any time between 6 - 9 a.m. and 6 - 9 p.m. On the 11th day, property owners must adhere to the general sprinkling regulations. Hand-held hose watering is permitted any time for flowers, gardens, lawns, trees and shrubs.
No permits for sod/seed will be issued during the months of July and August.
If you have a sprinkler system, it is important to have your irrigation system back flow prevention devices inspected each year.

Household hazardous waste front door collection service available
The City of Batavia offers a household hazardous waste collection service to its residents. The city’s third-party provider, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection. Residents can schedule a front door pickup by calling Clean Harbors at 866-466-5060 Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail and your call will be returned. Battery disposal information
The City of Batavia Offices often get questions about battery recycling or disposals. While City Hall and Batavia Public Works no longer accept batteries for recycling, they may be dropped off at the Kane County Recycles Center at 517 Fabyan Parkway, Geneva. For details on recycling batteries and other recycling questions, visit kanecountyil.gov/Recycling.
Cross Connection Control Program ensures water safety
The City of Batavia is committed to providing safe, high-quality drinking water that meets or exceeds EPA and Illinois standards. To protect public health, the city manages a Cross Connection Control Program to prevent potential water contamination. Batavia partners with Aqua Backflow to oversee the program. Each year, residents and businesses will receive notices for required backflow testing to ensure compliance with the Illinois Plumbing Code.

Helpful tips to handle a sewer back-up
If your residence experiences a sewer back-up please call the City first at 630-454-2000, or during non-business hours or weekends call the nonemergency number for the Batavia Police Department, 630-454-2500. The problem might be in the City’s main line. By calling the City first, it could save you the price of hiring a private plumber. If the problem is in your own service line, the City can provide guidance in hiring a plumber. The City has emergency response personnel 24 hours per day.
Check your insurance policy to determine if you are covered for sanitary sewer back-up and/or sump pump failure. Many homeowners’
policies do not cover sewer back-ups or water damage unless you have purchased a special provision for this purpose.
If you experience a sewer back-up, follow these guidelines for repairs and clean-up:
• Always call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or possessions.
• The City of Batavia's insurance company will make a determination if the City is responsible for damages caused by a sewer backup.

Brush collection continues
Curbside residential brush collection is available to residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Please note that your collection week doesn’t occur the same week each month; there are seven collections per season. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. the Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence. Brush placed out after crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.
The amount of brush that has been placed out citywide in any given month dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week. The collections are for homeowner trimming and meant to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season; special collections are done very rarely. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be posted on bataviail.gov. Brush/ trimmings generated by a private service must be removed by that service and may not be put out for brush collection. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.
The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush:
• Maximum diameter is 6-inches, logs cannot be split; maximum length of limbs is 12-feet.
• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.

• Groot Industries will collect yard waste bags/32-gallon cans, not to exceed 50 pounds per bag/32gallon can, consisting of twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps, and plants on your regular trash collection day through Nov. 30. A refuse sticker should be attached to the yard waste bag or 32-gallon can. If a can is used, it should be clearly marked “Yard Waste” on the side facing the street.
• Residents with limbs/brush exceeding the requirements for the program can contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.
• Residents in unincorporated areas should contact their township offices regarding brush collection services that may be available to them.

Yard waste collection continues
Weekly yard waste collection is underway and will continue through Nov. 30.
Refuse stickers are available for purchase at several local outlets. A complete list is available at bataviail.gov.
Residents should place a refuse sticker on each generic yard waste bag or 32-gallon can and put bag/can at the curb on their regular collection date. Yard waste is collected separately from regular refuse and recycling. Cans must be clearly labeled yard waste on the front, and a refuse sticker should be attached to the handle. Plastic bags cannot be used. Maximum capacity is 50 pounds per yard waste bag or container. Yard waste carts are also available to rent for a fee through Groot Industries. Refuse may not be mixed with yard waste.
Yard waste includes grass clippings; leaves; branches and brush; other yard and garden trimmings; vines, garden plants and flowers; weeds; tree droppings such as pinecones and crabapples; and other similar organic waste materials. Not included: sod and greenery from wreaths or garlands is not yard waste and should be disposed of as refuse.

River Rhapsody series starts in June
There’s nothing better than an outdoor concert and cool tunes on a warm summer evening at Batavia’s scenic Riverwalk. Bring your family, friends, picnics, lawn chairs and blankets. River Rhapsody’s 2026 lineup showcases a diverse selection of musicians, tunes and genres such as classic rock, vintage tunes, yacht rock and everything in between.

Gather & Remember in Batavia
Memorial Day is one of the oldest federal holidays in America, and it began with the community tradition of laying flowers to honor the graves of fallen soldiers of the Civil War. The Grand Army of the Republic, a veterans’ association, formally adopted the holiday in 1868, under the leadership of Major General John Logan. (A cane gifted by Logan to Batavian Edgar Swain is currently on display at the Batavia Depot Museum.)
Today, the holiday calls for a moment of remembrance to “honor the men and women of the United States who died in the pursuit of freedom and peace,” and to pray for permanent peace.

Enrich your civic season this year with a visit to the Batavia Depot Museum for a free exhibit all about the ongoing fight to secure “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.”
“To Secure These Rights,” the new temporary exhibit at the Batavia Depot Museum celebrates Batavians who have fought to make the promise of the Declaration of Independence true for themselves and their neighbors. The exhibit features military uniforms and equipment from the 20th century, personal stories of service, photographs, artifacts and more. Young visitors are invited to imagine how they can build a strong community through a hands-on play space in the lower level.

The Tribute Artist of the Year honor was awarded to singer/actress/ producer Lisa McClowry, star of The Beat Goes On Cher Tribute Show, at the Grande Ole Opry in Nashville, Tennessee. The award was presented by the Josie Music Awards (the world’s largest international independent artists awards ceremony) for McClowry's portrayal of Cher in this theatrical extravaganza celebrating six decades in the life and career of the Goddess of Pop. Cher is, in short, incomparable. And now, she's beautifully portrayed in a Broadway-style live stage show called “The Beat Goes On” by Legends in Concert artist, singer and actress Lisa McClowry. It’s no surprise that McClowry was named Tribute Artist of the Year. Why? Because she cares about every aspect of playing Cher, and it shows. Nothing is overlooked.
“I am proud to portray a woman who empowers other women," McClowry said. Summer is one of the most exciting times of the year at Batavia Public Library. As the school year winds down and schedules begin to shift, the library becomes a place where our community can explore, learn, and connect in new ways. Our annual Summer Reading Program is just around the corner, and we invite readers of all ages to join the fun.
This year’s theme is “Plant a Seed, Read,” celebrating how reading helps ideas grow and curiosity flourish. Just like a garden begins with a small seed, a single book can spark imagination, inspire new interests, and lead to lifelong learning. Throughout the summer, we’ll feature programs and activities that encourage readers of all ages to nurture their curiosity and watch it grow.
Whether you’re a child discovering the joy of books, a teen exploring new ideas, or an adult looking for your next great read, Summer Reading is designed for everyone. Participants can track their reading, attend engaging programs, and earn prizes along the way. From storytimes and family events to author talks, hands-on activities, and creative workshops, something is happening at the library nearly every week this summer. Most importantly, Summer Reading helps build the habit of reading for pleasure—a habit that benefits learners of every age.
While we celebrate a busy summer season, we are also preparing for an exciting new chapter for Batavia
Public Library. In November 2026, we will initiate a library-wide renovation project aimed at enhancing the library experience for our community today and into the future. The renovation will refresh our spaces, enhance accessibility, and create more flexible areas for reading, learning, and gathering.
The good news is that the Library will remain open during construction, and we will continue to provide the services and resources our community relies on. Over the coming months, we will share updates and information to keep patrons informed about what to expect as the project progresses.
Batavia Public Library has always been a place where people come together to discover new ideas, find inspiration, and connect. This summer, we hope you will visit us often—pick up a great book, attend a program, and participate in Summer Reading. And as we look ahead to our renovation, we are excited to continue building a library that reflects the needs and dreams of the Batavia community.

For a more relaxed and intimate shopping experience, visit the Wednesday Night Market, held 5–8 p.m. on June 10, 17, 24; July 1, 15, 22, 29; and Aug. 5. This year, the market takes place at South Riverwalk Plaza at N. Island Ave. & Houston St., in conjunction with the Batavia Park District’s River Rhapsody Concert Series. Browse 20+ vendors offering fresh produce, readyto-eat dinners, and delicious desserts while enjoying the energy of a summer evening in downtown Batavia. Batavia United Way is expanding youth opportunity by investing in early learning. Through the Success By 6 Preschool Scholarship, we partner with local preschools to help children from low-income families access highquality early education, setting them on a path toward future academic
success. Applications are now open.
Additionally, Batavia’s Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library delivers free books each month to children ages birth to 5 years, nurturing early literacy. Families can now choose
the classic program or the English/Spanish bilingual option.
