‘Such a breeze’ at Sauk Vets tell rep program made transition to school easy BY JERMAINE PIGEE jpigee@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5525
DIXON – When Ashley DeArmitt left the Navy in 2012, she was nervous about transitioning into the real world. “When I first wanted to get into the nursing program, I didn’t know anything about benefits or anything,” said
DeArmitt, a second-year student at Sauk Valley Community College. DeArmitt, 25, spent 4 years in the Navy as a quartermaster. When she found out about the veteran services program at Sauk, she said her mind was put at ease. “I was so surprised, because everything has been such a breeze,” said DeArmitt, who
has been in the program both of her years. For the past 5 years, Victory Media, a media entity for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has named the college a military-friendly school. That caught the attention of U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos, D-East Moline. SAUK CONTINUED ON A2

U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos
STERLING – The mud has been flying from both camps of late in the 17th Congressional District race, but Republican Bobby Schilling said he wants to refocus on the issues. Schilling was at the Sauk Valley Media office Thursday to discuss his campaign to regain the seat he lost to Cheri Bustos in 2012. In early May, Schilling challenged the incumbent to a series of 14 debates – one in each county of the 17th district. The Colona resident said he is disappointed that only one debate has been agreed upon. That event will be held sometime in October in Moline, and carried by TV station WQAD. “She has been unwilling to get away from the 5-second sound bites,” Schilling said of the East Moline Democrat.
