Marine Lance Cpl. Adam Devine speaks to the crowd July 14, 2012, after a parade to welcome him home to Dixon.
MORRISON – Alex Fischbach is done trying to be something that he’s not. “I’ve spent most of my life trying to be somebody else; trying to mimic other people’s styles and be like them,” Fischbach said. “I think what ‘Idol’ helped me realize is I just need to be myself and figure out who I am. Now that I am [figuring that out], everything has come easier.” The 20-year-old singer-songwriter says his time on the Fox television show “American Idol” pushed him into the right direction. “It helped me see what the business was going to be like, and helped me figure out who I wanted to be [in the business],” the Morrison native said. Since his run ended in February, Fischbach has been focusing on writing original songs and building his fan base. His Facebook page – which he created after his first audition for the show – has grown to more than 4,500 “Likes” in less than a year.

Substance abuse hotline up and running in Lee County BY CHRISTI WARREN cwarren@saukvalley.com 800-798-4085, ext. 5521 @SeaWarren

DIXON – The latest in Lee County’s all-systems-go effort to stanch a heroin epidemic locally and nationally is up and running. That would be the new crisis hotline, available 24/7, which was set up by the Worship Center in Dixon. Though a faith orgainziation set it up, nothing about the Lee County We Care Substance Abuse Hotline is faith-based, said Pastor

Michael Cole, who spearheaded the effort. “We’re not trying to push anything except assisting people in recovery,” he said. The hotline is run by 25 volunteers who attended training sessions to learn how to best help callers with their individual needs. “They’ve gone through a simple training process of active listening skills and understanding the 911 Samaritan Law and things of that nature,” he said. DIXON – Adam Devine kept using the same word to describe what it’s like to be on the receiving end of a Wonder Warrior Project: Amazing. Almost 4 years ago, Lance Cpl. Devine was injured by an improvised explosive device while on active duty in Afghanistan. Devine lost both of his legs and spent months in recovery. Among other major life changes, Devine, now 25, said he was forced to change his perspective. Before the injury, he said, he hoped to work as a law enforcement officer. Afterward, Devine said, he knew it would be difficult to live in the Sauk Valley, let alone find a home that was ADA compliant and a career that would accommodate his new circumstances. And that’s where the Wounded Warrior Project stepped in. Devine said the program helped him financially while he and his wife, Michelle, tried to sort through what life changes were ahead. “They helped me with a wheelchair, vehicle grant, kitchen supplies,” Devine said Thursday during a phone interview. He added the process for applying to the project was painless, and it allowed him and his wife to prioritize family needs for their two children, Brayden,1, and Amya, 4. The Devines knew they “had to uproot” from Dixon, and found home near Washington, D.C. DEVINE CONTINUED ON A5
