Rockford man gets life sentence Doddy strangled Sterling native, still faces verdict in first of two murders

DIXON – A Rockford man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in the slaying of a Sterling native at a rest stop near Paw Paw – his second murder in as many days – was sentenced Monday to life in prison.

Terence Doddy, 37, is “a very dangerous individual that all of us must be protected from,” Lee County Circuit Court Judge Ronald Jacobson said.

Doddy strangled Tonya Bargman, 44, of Monticello, on July 1 as she left a restroom at the Willow

Creek rest stop along Interstate 39.

Lee County State’s Attorney Anna Sacco-Miller, who asked for the life sentence, said surveillance video shows him grabbing Bargman by the neck and throwing her to the ground before hauling her into the bathroom and closing the door.

The next thing seen on the video is Doddy leaving the restroom, alone, and attempting to lock the door.

Bargman was found face down in the toilet, drowned.

DIXON – The City Council giveth Rita Crundwell funds, and the council taketh away.

Following last week’s budget discussions, council members voted Monday to repeal approvals made by the previous council in April.

The money was slated for the boat docks project, new Christmas decorations, and to facilitate local organizations such as The Next Picture Mitch Show, Dixon Main Tucker Street and Dixon Tourism. Council members said they are open to revisiting each project at a later date.

Minutes later, the council approved reallocating $25,000 of the Crundwell dollars toward addressing city nuisances. The money will give building official Paul Shiaras some extra muscle, in case Dixon needs to litigate a demolition matter with the Janis Card Company.

The survey was conducted by the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The voluntary survey was completed by nearly 53,000 registered nurses, or around 30 percent of the total in Illinois.

STERLING – Newman Central Catholic High School scholastic bowl coach Ann Propheter had one word to describe Elliott Frankfother, a standout on the team.

“Amazing,” Propheter said.

Frankfother, 18, placed seventh in the nation over the weekend at the 2015 High School National Championship, sponsored by the National Academic Quiz Tournaments.

Students from Newman participated in the 2-day national scholastic bowl event in Chicago.

Newman tied for 77th among 272 teams. More than 1,000 students from across the country participated.

“There are small-school divisions, but we can’t play in those divisions, because we are a private school,” said Propheter, who teaches math at Newman. “We had to play with the large-school division.”

During the first day of the event, Newman competed against 10 schools, finishing 6-4.

Because of its record, the Newman team advanced to the championship round on Sunday, when it lost its first match.

“We were the smallest school by far,” Propheter said. “Our school only has 225 students.”

fother, prepared for the competition by looking at a study guide NAQT provides. He also scoured education websites to gather information.

He is a big fan of the TV game show Jeopardy.

“The moderators read the questions so fast,” Frankfother said. “You have to pay close attention to every word. They have a schedule to follow.”

Propheter said Frankfother is constantly studying.

“He answers almost nine questions out of every 20 he faces,” she said. “He answers almost half of the questions in a match.”

Frankfother plans to attend Sauk Valley Community College in the fall before he enrolls in a 4-year college to major in accounting. He has not decided on a 4-year school.

Author pens updated memoir of massacre ‘Last American tourist’ recounts 1989 protests, unrest in China

In our country, history is safely stored in books, archived on the Internet, and retold to schoolchildren in songs and rhymes. From Rosa Parks and the Montgomery bus boycott to the recent uprisings in Missouri and Maryland, all of it stands a good chance to be remembered.

But who would remember an event if a government chose to erase its existence, and punished discussion about it?

To some, the brave image of a man blocking

a tank column comes to mind when the 1989 massacre at Tiananmen Square is discussed.

But in China, Internet searches for “Fourth,” “Tiananmen” and “Tank Man” come up empty, as if it never happened.

That’s the goal of China’s government, according to Chadwick resident Daniel Nardini, who was in the country for almost a month before the spontaneous movement exploded in more than 50 cities.

Thursday will mark the 26th anniversary of the pro-democracy protests, unrest, and killings across the communist country, and Nardini hopes the new book will fill in more of the blanks caused by the government blackout.

In Shanghai, for example, the downtown overflowed with activists, traffic was at a standstill as buses and cars were

frozen in place, and students packed into a Communist Party municipal building to occupy it, he said.

Martial law was imposed after authorities caught wind of the outcry, and Shanghai, then a populous city center of 13 million, completely shut down.

There’s never been anything like it in China, before or since, Nardini said.

STERLING – The council approved partial payment to contractors Monday for work on its green riverfront revitalization project.

In September 2013, former Gov. Pat Quinn came to town to announce Sterling would receive a $1.3 million Illinois Green Infrastructure Grant.

It was the largest state green space grant ever given to a municipality.

Plans for the $2.18 million eco-tourism project include a wetland and pond complex to improve water quality, 9 acres of natural landscape restoration, 3,000 square feet of publicly accessible green roofs, and more than 4,500 square feet of grass.

A $900,000 award from the state’s Mud to Parks program will also help transfer about 60,000 cubic yards of fill material to cover the brownfield site.

A payment of $61,538.40 will be made to Martin and Company Excavating of Oregon for work being done at the Northwestern Steel and Wire Co. site. The money helps fund the movement of silt from several sites to use as fill at the riverfront.

“Some of the dirt is being taken from construction at the Meadowlands industrial park, some from the quarry east of town, and then from Thomas Park after the pond is dredged,” City Administrator Scott Shumard said.

In early January, the city amended its Mud to Parks grant to include $150,000 for the park district’s dredging project. The funds, from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, take care of the bulk of the cost at the pond.

“That reimburses us for all of the dredging work, and we’ll just need to pay about $25,000 to install a fountain and some other things to make it look

The work at Thomas Park was delayed by the recent heavy rains. For grant purposes, the completion date for that work was May 29. The entire project is supposed to be finished by Jan. 1, 2016.

The contractors were ready to start last week, but all of the extra water in the pond complicated matters. More water had to be pumped out, and the digging began in earnest Monday.

“I was really happy to see that crane at Thomas Park today,” Alderman John Stauter said. “We’re running behind schedule with that part of the project.”

The final payment of $6,370.66 was also approved Monday for the demolition of a concrete deck at the Northwestern

Steel and Wire Co. Plant 1 site.

The nearly $119,000 project went to Burke Excavating in Tampico. Funds for that work also came from the Mud to Parks grant.

“The engineers’ estimate for this project was $225,000, so we were pleased with that low bid,” Shumard said.

The concrete slab was removed to restore the natural riverbank, and to allow for a cap to be placed on the site. The contract also included the removal of pipes, a grit tank and debris that was near the deck.

Specifics for the second phase of the green space project will be negotiated later, because that part of the project hinges on the culmination of the environmental remediation process at the Stanley building.

MILLEDGEVILLE – A benefit will be held Sunday for a Milledgeville man recovering from swine flu.

OBITUARIES Cecil G. Parke Jr. STERLING – Cecil G. Parke Jr., 82, of Sterling, died Monday, June 1, 2015, at Serenity Hospice & Home in Oregon.

Cecil was born Nov. 28, 1932, in Chicago, the son of Cecil and Viola (Mumford) Parke Sr. He had worked as a diesel mechanic for Wells Diesel in Nachusa for 25 years, then the city of Dixon, before his retirement. He was a lifetime member of the Tri-County Gun Club, a member of the National Rifle Association, Sinnissippi Rod and Gun Club, and the Civilian Marksmanship Pistol Team.

He competed many years at Camp Perry pistol matches. He was an avid golfer and woodworker, and had built many pieces of furniture for his family. He was a veteran of the Army, serving during the Korean War. He was united in marriage to Joyce Potter on Oct. 11, 1952, at First Baptist Church in Dixon. She preceded him in death June 30, 2002. Cecil and Johnnie “Jackie” Standard united their families as one on Sept. 6, 2003.

He is survived by Jackie; their children, Deborah Boyle of Nachusa, Becky (James) Pepper, Niky Druien, and Cecilia (Tim) Stover, all of Dixon, Daniel Wayne (Diane) Parke of Bristol, Virginia, Monica (Michael) Wolfley of Dixon, Larry (Jewel)

Tim was born Sept. 1, 1949, in Payette, Idaho, the son of R. Lawrence and Helen (Carey) Scott. He was a graduate of Polo High School. Tim was a member of East Jordan United Methodist Church in Polo and Dixon Moose Lodge.

Tim worked as a truck driver for many years, most recently with EMF Transportation. Before that, he co-owned the Shamrock Pub in Dixon with his wife for 9 years.

He married Patricia Cleary on July 27, 1990, in Dixon.

“It’s a study of what is coming in the next few years,” said Kristie Geil, vice president of patient services for CGH Medical Center. “They believe there will be a shortage.”

One-third of all registered nurses 55 and older said they intend to retire in the next 5 years. That could leave voids in psychiatric, school, and other nursing specialties.

Janet Lynch, dean of health professions at Sauk Valley Community College, said the applicant pool of interested nursing students has dropped over the last year Each year, Lynch said the program enrolls 20 licensed practical nurses and 30 registered nurses.

She said spots are usually filled up my March 1, but this year, there were still openings in the program

after March 1.

“The reason why the applicants dropped is because they don’t think there are jobs available,” Lynch said. “There are jobs available, and this is a great place to start.”

Despite the projections, Geil said she is not witnessing a shortage at CGH. “We are not having a problem recruiting at this time,” she said. “We have a low turnover rate, and that makes a big difference.”

Another way CGH is staying ahead of the curve is with the help of the hospital’s nurse residency program.

“We hire new grads every year, whether we need them or not, and we put them in our float pool,” Geil said. “Over the next 12 months, as I have openings, those grads will fill those vacancies, since they are already hired.”

The nurses in the program cover vacations, and help cover surgeries.

“They are my floats,” Geil said. “They are trained, and they get extra time to train right out of school to learn the nursing trade. We always have more grads in that pool, and it helps us a lot.”

The Great Recession, which resulted in many nurses’ spouses losing jobs in other fields, delayed many retirement plans.

Geil said the economic recovery that followed has put many of those retirement plans back on track.

Although she agrees there might be a nursing shortage, Geil said this has happened before.

“When I went to school in the early 1990s, there was a nursing shortage,” she said. “When I graduated 4 years later, there were too many nurses, and none of us could find a job.

Over the years, it has gone up and down a lot.”

Geil said this survey might spark a new interest in nursing.

“What this article will do is get a whole bunch of people to go into nursing, and in a couple years, we will be OK again,” she said.

In order to prevent a nursing shortage, Lynch said she wants to continue reaching prospective nursing students.

“We go to career fairs at the Whiteside Area Career Center, and we attend Sterling High School’s career fair,” Lynch said. “We also have a commercial that highlights a licensed practical nurse graduate. If people are interested in nursing, they know this program is available.”

CGH will also continue to host job fairs with Sauk and other agencies to talk with students interested in nursing.

“We want to try and promote the profession and get people into it,” Geil said. “Sauk has been a really good feeder for us.”

She was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Walnut. She attended Coe College and graduated from St. Luke School of Nursing in Chicago. She then joined the Army Nurse Corps as a second lieutenant. She served during World War II in England.

She married her high school sweetheart in 1945 in England. After the war, she worked as a private duty nurse for several physicians and as a nurse for the Dixon Public Schools. She was a longtime member of Dixon Country Club in Dixon, and Cross Creek Golf Club in Fort Myers, Florida.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Dixon and Pilgrim’s Church

in Fort Myers. She enjoyed golfing, boating, playing bridge, and traveling around the world.

She is survived by her children, Philip (Susan) Slagle of Itasca, and Dee Dee (James) Sanborn of Batavia; two grandsons, Scott (Anna) Slagle of Kailua, Hawaii, and Jeff (Teresa) Slagle of Anchorage, Alaska; and two great-granddaughters, Camille Slagle and Emma Slagle of Kailua, Hawaii.

In exchange for Doddy’s plea to firstdegree murder, the court dismissed 11 other counts of firstdegree murder, and one count each of possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of a stolen credit card, and robbery.

When he was convicted April 29, Doddy told the judge he did not want to attend his sentencing, where vic-

tim impact statements would be read, and he was not in court Monday.

Jacobson had twice asked Doddy’s attorney, Lee County Public Defender Bob Thompson, to bring him to court for the hearing, but Doddy refused.

Doddy’s spree began with the June 30 murder of his former best friend, Todd Hansmeier, 37, of Rockford, who was found dead of head and neck injuries, his body burned.

Doddy will be sentenced for Hansmeier’s murder June 15 in Winnebago County Court in Rockford.

Ex-speaker to appear in court Thursday Federal judge previously donated money to congressional campaign CHICAGO (AP) – Former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert is set to make his first court appearance in his hush-money case Thursday, when he is expected to enter a plea before a federal judge who previously donated $1,500 to the thenDennis Illinois conHastert gressman’s re-election campaign.

The arraignment for Hastert, a Republican who was once second in line to the U.S. presidency, comes a week after a grand jury indictment alleged he agreed to pay $3.5 million to ensure

qualify himself,” Cummins said about the contributions. “I think Durkin has impeccable character.”

He added, however, that Durkin could still step aside if he determines there might be a perception of bias.

The May 28 indictment details a 2010 agreement between Hastert and a person identified only as “Individual A” to pay millions to “compensate for and conceal [Hastert’s] prior misconduct” against the unnamed individual.

The indictment notes Hastert was a history teacher and coach from 1965 to 1981 in Yorkville, a Chicago suburb. The other party “has been a resident of Yorkville and has known Hastert for most of Individual A’s life,” the document said.

SPRINGFIELD (AP) – The state Capitol was quiet Monday, after the departure of lawmakers locked in a budget stalemate with Gov. Bruce Rauner. But the silence belied a cacophony of political ads the rookie administration is about to unleash on powerful legislative Democrats calling them an elite “political class” unwilling to help the middle class.

Republican Rauner previewed the video assault Monday, contending the state can’t find a financial footing without his proposed political- and business-climate changes.

Democrats adopted a $36.3 billion spending plan that they acknowledge is short on revenue by $3 billion and left town.

They insist Rauner’s agenda for term limits, fairer political-district drawing, a local property tax freeze and less-costly workers’ compensation insurance are unrelated to funding essential government services – those vital to the low-income and middle class.

Rauner countered that his agenda is “intimately connected” with budget negotiations – his changes would stymie a “thriving political class of politicians and lobbyists monetarily dependent on the formidable House speaker, Chi-

A: Rauner won’t confirm they’re in the can, but aides have suggested the main target is Madigan.

Expect them to go beyond perceived recent inflexibility and to examine the Illinois Democratic Party chairman’s 3 decades as speaker. There was no immediate evidence Monday that TV stations

had reserved time for Rauner ads.

Q: How will the Democrats respond?

A: Madigan will continue to work “in a professional and cooperative manner,” spokesman Steve Brown said. No advertising slouch, Madigan has begun sending his message in mailers to Republican turf.

“I’m not sure how wellreceived whatever this attack will be, how credible

it will be, in that context.”

Q: Who makes the new move?

A: Lawmakers didn’t cover the statehouse furniture for the season. They’ll be back – the House on Thursday and the Senate on June 9. Brown said Madigan plans a vote – he wouldn’t disclose the subject but noted there’s “the issue of working with the administration on some additional revenue.” Rikeesha Phelon, spokeswoman for Senate President John Cullerton, said Democrats want to show Rauner they’re still open to talk.

“Scheduling a return date before a deal is reached is an act of faith,” Phelon said. “Hopefully negotiations will progress by then.”

No legislator will be reimbursed for mileage or meals.

Past summer sessions of inaction have prompted news media to tally up the daily cost to taxpayers.

Q: The budget year begins July 1. What if there’s no deal by then?

A: The state comptroller will have difficulty meeting payroll for the second half of July without a budget to draw from. If it drags on into the dog days, Aug. 10 is the date that public schools are scheduled to receive their first of about two dozen twice-monthly operations payments of about $200 million.

ROCK FALLS – Coloma Township has a vacancy to fill on its board of trustees.

The opening was created by the May 13 resignation of Walter “Butch” Neal. Neal was appointed in late 2013 to fill an unexpired term. Neal has moved out of state.

Township Supervisor Dave Blanton has 60 days

from the resignation date to fill Neal’s seat on the four-member board. Blanton said those interested should stop by the township office at 1200 Prophet Road in Rock Falls with a resume in hand.

“The board and I will take a look at the resumes and make a decision together,” Blanton said.

Trustees must live in Coloma Township, and be a registered voter.

They are paid $100 a

month, and an additional $400 a year is available for training purposes.

The trustees, supervisor, clerk, roads commissioner, and assessor all serve 4-year terms, and the terms are not staggered.

When unexpired terms are filled, as was the case with Neal, appointees serve out the remainder of the term. That scenario could make for wholesale changes next year.

“Everyone’s term is up in

April 2016, so the township could look very different next year,” Blanton said.

The other members of the board are Gene Jacoby, Mary Richardson, and Peggy McFadden. Pam Erby serves as township clerk, and Mary Crebo is the assessor.

Not everyone was originally on board. Councilman Mitch Tucker initially proposed tabling the nuisance resolution, specifically citing the council’s earlier repeal.

Shiaras said that prior to Crundwell’s 2013 settlement, when the city received almost $50 million to recover its losses from the largest government fraud in U.S. history, his department was told to “drop whatever we could.”

As a result, the city has been unable to enforce properties that are so dilapidated they present a serious safety concern to the city of Dixon.

“We’re down to two [properties] that we absolutely know have to come down,” Shiaras said. “This extra money would simply be an ‘insurance policy.’ If we get a court order to demolish, we otherwise wouldn’t be able to do it.”

In some cases, Shiaras added, the city might not need to use the $25,000. But he said he cannot start nuisance remediation without something in his budget to cover the costs.

Tucker and Mayor Li Arellano Jr. still both favored tabling the matter. They were overridden by Mike Venier, Jess Arjes and Christopher Bishop. When it came to

approving the final resolution, Tucker and Arellano sided with their counterparts to grant Shiaras’ request unanimously.

It was a way, Venier said, for the city to tackle another neglected element of Dixon that Crundwell cost the city.

“That money would have been there several years ago,” added Arjes.

“This money will be for us to catch up.”

As for the repeal, the council also was in unison. After one month in office, the council has officially ratified three resolutions related to Crundwell dollars, of which approximately $5.2 million remains.

In May, the city approved fully funding a River Street renovation with Crundwell money, though bids on the project haven’t returned.

Monday’s repeal went through with less discussion. Members of Dixon Tourism and Main Street attended the meeting but did not address the council.

According to city leaders, Monday’s repeal could be the start of something “grander”: a move to consolidate Tourism and Main Street under one umbrella.

Councilmen even have a code word for this unified marketing approach. They call it “Dixon One.” “It’s the beginning of the groundwork for a consolidated project on a much bigger scale,” Venier said.

Forget about the budget, forget about Gov. Bruce Rauner’s “Turnaround Agenda,” forget about the almost unprecedented animosity during the spring legislative session between Democrats and Republicans.

The most talked-about issue under the Illinois Statehouse dome last week was a directive from one of the governor’s top staffers to all state agency directors.

The agency directors received an order from the Rauner administration Wednesday demanding that they and their staffs not meet or talk with any lobbyists unless the governor’s Policy Office had first OK’d the communications.

The directors were also told to inform agency “stakeholders” that they didn’t really need to hire lobbyists anyway.

The governor’s press office refused several entreaties to comment on the ban.

“We have continued concern about outside interests’ attempts to influence the use of state resources and state policy,” wrote Trey Childress, Rauner’s deputy governor, last week.

“As an extension of our efforts to curb the influence of these interests, we want to send a message loud and clear that constituents and stakeholders need not employ a lobbyist to voice their concerns or needs directly,” he continued.

“Until further notice, please coordinate with your department’s contact on the Governor’s policy team in advance of any meeting between your senior team members and registered lobbyists.”

When most people think of lobbyists, they think of them lobbying elected officials, particularly legislators.

But quite a few lobbyists have built careers exclusively lobbying state agencies. And many, many others regularly reach out to agencies on behalf of their clients or association members occasionally or even regularly.

AGENCIES WRITE rules that impact pretty much every business and every group in Illinois. So, most hire lobbyists to make sure their voices are heard and they aren’t harmed.

Also, some groups and businesses receive state grants, for things like job training, or for providing human or other services, or they rely on other state money. No government ever runs smoothly all the time, so glitches can happen. And when they do, people often turn to their Springfield associations to

That meant many Republican lobbyists were out of luck, as Democratic staff, campaign operatives, and even legislators decided to take up the lobbying business, and existing Democratic lobbyists greatly expanded their businesses.

And after Gov. Rauner won his election last November, several Democratic state agency honchos left to lobby the folks they used to work with.

Rauner’s people obviously don’t want Democrats having contacts with their agency folks without them knowing about it.

CONTROLLING THE bureaucracy is a very difficult task. Rauner is running the most top-down controlling governor’s office I’ve ever seen. So, this is at least partially designed to prevent surprises from happening down below.

But it will also mean that the governor’s office, which is thickly populated by former Republican campaign workers, will be able to lock out any Democrats they want.

Most lobbyists were shocked at the governor’s order, but some almost immediately came up with a plan to get around it.

The Democrats fully exploited “the spoils of war” when they were running everything. The Republican governor is now doing the same, but in a particularly Raunerish way.

Legislative Republicans are already bending over backward whenever he commands. He’s now extending his power over much of the rest of the Statehouse crowd.

Parents see daughters’ boyfriends as family Dear Abby, We have two lovely daughters in their 20s.

The older one lives with her boyfriend. They are expecting a baby soon.

Our younger daughter lives with us, and she’s planning on moving in with her boyfriend.

We’re an old married couple, and we’re not sure how to treat our daughters’ boyfriends. However, “Gerald” is the father of our new grandchild, and we think of him as family. “Joel” is a great guy who is in love with our younger daughter and vice versa, so we think of him as family, too.

We stumbled through the holidays not knowing if we should get gifts for them. Joel is having a birthday soon. Should we get him a gift? We want

But then he told me about a foot deformity he has. He said two of his toes on each foot are

Try to remember you are not dating his feet, you are dating the person to which they are appended, and a person’s toes are not the measure of his character.

Dear Abby, My daughter is being married for the second time. Some of the guests were invited to her first wedding and will be invited to her second one as well.

As her mother, I don’t feel right about expecting certain guests who have already given her one wedding gift to give her another at the second wedding. How would you suggest we convey to this “select group” that a gift is not expected from them?

Would it be proper to state something such as “Your presence is our present”?

I agree that guests who gave your daughter gifts for her first wedding should not feel compelled to buy her anything more than a token gift for this one. If a bridge player knows about endplays (this week’s theme), he will not labor long over today’s deal. How should South play in four spades after West leads the diamond jack?

Some players with that North hand would respond four spades. They would mention the Law of Total Tricks, saying it recommends that with a 10-card fit, bid to the 10-trick level.

But that applies when your side cannot have the normal high-card values for game or when it is a competitive auc-

tion. Here, South could have 19 or 20 points, and the auction is not competitive. Also, North has a balanced hand with a lot of losers. I think two spades is the correct response.

If West had led a club (unthinkable from his actual holding), the defenders could have taken three tricks in the suit and gotten off play with a spade or diamond. Then declarer would have had to find the heart queen. But now he does not need to guess its location.

He wins with his diamond ace (top of touching honors from the closed hand), draws trumps, cashes his diamond king, and exits with a club.

The defenders take three tricks in that suit, but what can the one on lead do next?

Either way, no more collection of phone records If bill fails, practice cannot resume WASHINGTON (AP) – However Congress resolves its impasse over government surveillance, this much is clear: The National Security Agency will ultimately be out of the business of collecting and storing Americans’ calling records.

Aiming for passage this afternoon, the Senate on Monday prepared to make modest changes to a House bill that would end the collection while preserving other surveillance authorities. But while Congress debated,

the law authorizing the collection expired at midnight Sunday.

The NSA had stopped gathering the records from phone companies hours before the deadline. And other post-9/11 surveillance provisions considered more effective than the phone-call collection program also lapsed, leading intelligence officials to warn of critical gaps.

The legislation now before the Senate, known as the USA Freedom Act, would reauthorize the

surveillance but would phase out NSA phone records collection over time. It passed the House overwhelmingly and is backed by President Barack Obama. Sen. Rand Paul, who doesn’t believe it goes far enough in restricting the government, objected anew on Monday, but he can’t stop a vote to end debate scheduled for this morning.

If the bill becomes law over the next few days, the NSA will resume gathering the phone records but only for a transition period of 6 months, in the

House version, or a year in the Senate version.

If the bill fails amid congressional politics, the collection cannot resume, period.

The turn of events is a victory for Edward Snowden, the former NSA contractor who disclosed the phone records collection in 2013. Senators on the intelligence committee had been issuing veiled and vague warnings about the program for years, saying if Americans only knew how the Patriot Act was being interpreted they would be outraged.

Hollywood, companies dipping toes into virtual reality worlds Consumer versions of goggles coming soon LOS ANGELES (AP) – Virtual reality is creeping into our world.

Movie studios, television producers and artists are now adopting the technology – once seen as a tool for alien-blasting gamers – which immerses people in faraway realms using bulky goggles, house-sized domes, and smartphones.

Entering a virtual world means that users who look left, right, up or behind experience an alternate environment, even when they’re sitting in a theater or on a couch.

It means a horror movie can be promoted with a haunted house tour featuring a mass murderer who can spring from anywhere. Or a shark documentary enhanced by the sensation that you’re being circled by predators.

“What’s better for jump scares than, like, turning your head and it’s right in your face?” says Matt Lipson, senior vice president of digital marketing at Focus Features.

Universal’s Focus Features recently launched its first virtual-reality experience for movies, promoting the upcoming release of its “Insidious: Chapter 3” horror flick. It’s driving

a truck around the country, inviting fans to wear virtualreality goggles. It’s also sent out thousands of movie-branded Google Cardboard kits, which fold around smartphones to turn them into primitive VR viewers. Fans can download

the app from Google Play, or the App Store to make it work.

In the “Insidious” VR experience, viewers sit in a haunted house across from a psychic.

Various scares appear from the right and left and, in the end, there is a close-up encounter with an undead serial killer known as the Bride in Black.

Lionsgate used a similar approach for its “Insurgent” movie. It applied VR to try to widen the film’s fan base beyond young women, to male fans of action movies. Using VR was one way to appeal to gamers, who are mostly men and are expected to be the first buyers of VR headsets.

VR remains in the realm of promotion. But content created now or for future films could also build value for home video products as more VR headsets are sold, Lipson says.

And the number of outlets for virtual reality is increasing.

Oculus VR, the company Facebook bought for $2 billion and a leader in the VR headset market, is expected to start shipping a consumer version early next year.

It’s already sold 150,000 goggles as test units for content developers. Samsung, meanwhile, is sell-

ing Gear VR, which works with Galaxy S6 smartphones. Sony will release a consumer version of its Project Morpheus, which connects to its PlayStation 4, in the first half of next year.

Oculus’s goal is to get headsets into as many hands as possible, says co-founder and head of product Nate Mitchell.

The company set up a division of experimental filmmakers called Oculus Story Studio to help other filmmakers learn how to create VR video.

“Our goal is making the Rift [headset] and virtual reality affordable,” says Mitchell, adding that he hopes it “becomes a technology that truly changes the world.”

Facebook is testing what CEO Mark Zuckerberg calls “spherical video,” or a flat representation of immersive content that could be navigable by mouse on its website. Google’s YouTube launched support for “360-degree video” on Chrome browsers and Android phones in March and is providing VR camera rigs for its partners at its six studios. Fold-up Google Cardboard units can be bought online for as little as $2.46.

Retirees scramble to verify health insurance Company calls request routine PEORIA (AP) – Some Caterpillar retirees are scrambling to comply with a recent request by the Peoria company to provide proof of dependency for family members to continue receiving health insurance.

Affected former employees include 92-year-old Jordan Wieland, a tool designer who worked for Caterpillar Inc. for

44 years before retiring 3 decades ago, The Peoria Journal Star reported.

Wieland was asked to provide verification of his birth and his 61-year marriage through governmentissued certificates before June 17, he said. He had to enlist the help of his son, Vince Wieland, a lieutenant with the Peoria Police Department, to retrieve the documents from the Peoria County Courthouse.

If the information isn’t verified, it will be assumed that the dependents no longer meet the plan’s eligibility requirements, and they will be removed from the plan effective Aug. 1, Miller said.

Officials with the Peoria County Courthouse have noticed a recent uptick in requests for vital records, including birth and death certificates and marriage licenses, for Caterpillar employees and retirees.

“Last April, we had requests for 1,785 documents, whereas this year,

The company calls the verification request routine. More than 70 percent of the company’s 15,000 retirees already have complied with a step last requested of current and former employees about

“It is an important step in managing costs. Caterpillar and its group health plans have security measures in place to protect the personal information of employees and retirees,” she said.

Man with degree in sculpture says grounds keeping is art

PEORIA – Mike Reno is an artist, from painting an end zone every year at the Super Bowl, to carefully manicuring Dozer Park nightly for Peoria Chiefs games.

Fitting, for a guy who graduated with a degree in sculpture from Arizona State University. Super Bowl end zones are his canvas. Dozer Park is his gallery.

“I like to be outside,” said Reno, 35, a St. Louis native now in his fifth season presiding over the Chiefs home field as head groundskeeper. “The beauty of a natural field, there’s nothing like it.”

There’s few like Reno.

He went to college at ASU and attended a job fair there in hopes of finding work to help pay for his loans.

“I saw some cheerleaders and went over there to talk to them, honestly,” Reno said. “They

recruited me for the stadium grounds crew.

“And so it began.”

His boss at ASU, Pete Wozniak, was contracted by the NFL to be part of the league’s 30-man grounds crew for the Super Bowl in 2002. He took Reno with him.

Since then, Reno’s specialty has been to paint one of the end zones each year at the Super Bowl. The last four team names he’s painted – Patriots, Seahawks, Ravens, Giants – have all won.

“They bring guys in from all over the country to work on that crew,” said Reno, who lives in central Illinois with his wife, Nikki, who is a Caterpillar Inc. exec, and their son, Alexavier, 3, and newborn daughter, Everley. “It’s a great atmosphere, a lot of precision and technique that you can pick up.”

“That field was a disaster, patches of dirt here and there, a mess,” Reno said. “We worked it into great shape and had it ready to go. And then the ninjas attacked.

“The Steelers were to practice for the first time in the morning, but the night before, a group somehow scaled the fences and walls, got into the stadium, and painted a large, well, male body part, at midfield.

“We discovered it in the morning and the only thing we could think of to do with it was create a Steelers logo there and blend it in. No one ever knew.”

Now that’s teamwork.

And Reno says he leans heavily on the team he built to take care of Dozer Park for the Midwest League’s Chiefs.

STERLING – Monday’s regional championship was a lesson in patience for the Sterling softball team.

The Golden Warriors showed plenty of the virtue in a clean 6-0 victory over Mendota that earned them their fourth consecutive regional crown, and placed them within three wins of their third straight trip to the 3A state tournament.

Sterling moves on to play Burlington Central today at 4:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the Belvidere North Sectional.

“This feels really good because we’ve had our ups and downs this year, and it feels like we’ve put it all together late in the season at the right time,” said senior catcher Lauren Fritz, who homered and doubled in the victory. “We weren’t hitting the ball very well, and we needed to work on some things, but we’ve come around here in the last couple of weeks.”

Newman advances to state tournament for first time

DEKALB – Rhyanna Hadden will never have a sweeter snow cone in her entire life.

She and her Newman softball teammates will be hard pressed to have any sweeter result when it comes to athletics than what they accomplished on Monday afternoon.

The Comets took advantage of a mistake-prone Princeville squad and broke through with three runs in the top of the 11th on the way to a 5-2 victory at the 1A DeKalb Supersectional.

Newman has won 13 consecutive games.

Illinois advances to Supers after win Ryne Roper hit a two-run double and top-seeded Illinois defeated Wright State 8-4 Monday to advance to the Super Regionals.

Sixth-ranked Illinois will face Vanderbilt, a 21-0 winner over Radford.

Roper’s double gave the Illini (50-8) a lead it never relinquished in a four-run fifth inning. Will Krug and Ryan Nagle each drove in a run in the inning. It was the 25th come-frombehind win of the season for Illinois.

J.D. Nielsen (3-1) was the winner. Tyler Jay earned his 14th save of the season, allowing one hit and striking out five.

NFL

Browns Manziel won’t be starter Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel is on the practice field Monday in front of journalists for the first time since his release from rehab.

Sporting a shorter haircut, Manziel is taking part in Cleveland’s first practice of the third phase of the team’s offseason program.

Manziel spent 10 weeks at Caron Addiction Treatment Center in Pennsylvania for an unspecified issue before being discharged on April 10.

Browns coach Mike Pettine and several of Manziel’s teammates have praised his re-commitment following a first year in which he played poorly in two starts. He’ll open camp as Cleveland’s No. 2 quarterback behind Josh McCown.

Belmont field shrinks to eight The Belmont Stakes field is down to eight after two horses dropped out.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said Monday that Carpe Diem won’t run Saturday when American Pharoah goes for the Triple Crown.

Also, trainer Ken McPeek withdrew The Truth or Else.

Carpe Diem was 10th in the Kentucky Derby and will point toward the Haskell Invitational or Jim Dandy Stakes this summer. The Truth or Else did not run in the Kentucky Derby or Preakness and has an ankle issue.

That leaves seven rivals to face Derby and Preakness winner American Pharoah in his bid to become the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Djokovic, Nadal to meet in French Open From the moment the French Open draw was made more than a week ago, this is the match the tennis world has been awaiting: No. 1 Novak Djokovic against nine-time champion Rafael Nadal.

Except instead of the final, Wednesday’s blockbuster will come in the quarterfinals.

MORRISON – Brooke Stralow’s plan was to keep getting the bat on the ball, and eventually the ball would go forward.

One foul tip went high off the top of the light pole down the third-base line, and then crashed loudly on top of the metal dugout inhabited by her Morrison Fillies teammates – causing a couple to give out shrieks of surprise.

Another went deep out of play down the left-field line. Others shot harmlessly into the backstop.

For eight pitches, she battled Stillman Valley’s Payton Abbott, and on No. 9, she was rewarded. She connected, and the ball sailed deep into left-center for a two-run double.

It was a good battle, and that’s what the Fillies gave the Cardinals on Monday in the championship game of the 2A Morrison Sectional. The Fillies, however, didn’t get their final reward.

Stillman Valley won 8-4 to advance to today’s Illinois Central College Supersectional against Elmwood-Brimfield. It is Stillman’s first sectional title in softball.

The Fillies (30-4) will go home, a young group players that will bring back a majority of their starting lineup in 2016.

The double was part of a Morrison rally in the fifth inning that drew the Fillies within a run.

The rally started with a walk by senior Lakin Goodman, the No. 9 hitter in Morrison’s lineup. She moved to second on a groundout by Emma Melton, and then Rachel Davis was hit by a pitch.

Stralow’s double scored both, and then Lauren Rice followed with a double of her own to score Stralow.

The momentum, however, didn’t last.

Stralow, pitching in her second inning of relief of Rice, gave up back-to-back singles to start the bottom of the inning.

Abbott – who had a two-run triple in the third inning – lined the ball hard to center, but right at Davis. Haley Bee followed with

a bloop hit to right. Goodman charged, fielded the ball, and threw home.

The ball bounced away from catcher Lauren Vos, allowing both Ali Green and Lexi Morrison to score. They were two of the five runs that scored on Morrison errors.

“We just wanted to be aggressive,” Abbott said. “We wanted to hit the ball hard in play, and make them make plays. We were able to get the ball in play today, and good things happened.”

“Them scoring runs right after we came back was the turning point in the game,” Stralow said.

“We had just climbed back, and then they came right back and scored. We kept fighting, but that was a big moment.”

Stillman Valley tacked on two more runs in the sixth, one scoring on another Morrison error.

Stillman gave one back as Melton scored on a dropped fly ball in center field in the seventh.

“It’s hard to explain sometimes when there are errors like that,” Morrison coach Tammy Deter said. “It sometimes happens. We have a young group of girls, and maybe that was part of it.

“I am proud of this bunch.

We’ve gone a few years here without any hardware, and they came out and got a regional. Hopefully they build on this, and we can come out and go a little farther next year.”

Patience was needed before the game even began, as the game was postponed for 2 days due to Saturday’s rainout, and it was needed again once the game got underway. Mendota pitcher Rylee Klema featured a change-up whose speed could be better measured via sundial than radar gun, a pitch that Klema used often in her team’s 1-0 upset over Rock Falls in Thursday’s 11-inning semifinal win. Sterling coach Becki Edmondson stressed to her players the importance of not falling victim to that pitch.

“You think you can [wait back on the pitch], but then you swing right through it,” Edmondson said. “I told the girls to just lay back off of her changeup.”

“I was watching her hips to see what she was going to throw,” Fritz said of her third-inning at-bat. Fritz slapped the pitch to the opposite field for a triple. “I knew she’d either throw me a changeup on the first pitch or second pitch.

The first pitch was a changeup, and I knew the next pitch would be on the outside corner. I

just threw my bat at it.”

The rest of the Warriors followed Fritz’s lead; Sterling hitters struck out just three times in the game, putting pressure on the Trojans’ defense.

In the second inning, that defense wasn’t up to the challenge, committing three errors that led to two unearned runs. Emily McDonald, and Hannah Escamilla both singled and scored

in the inning as well, and the Warriors held an early 4-0 lead.

The four runs were plenty for the pitching combo of Lexy Staples and Maddie Corwell, who stretched their cumulative scoreless streak to 26 innings.

As she did in her team’s semifinal victory over Rochelle, Edmondson used both pitchers, turning to Corwell to lead off the fifth in an effort to prevent Mendota’s hitters from getting too comfortable.

It’s a strategy the Warriors very well may use as the postseason continues.

“We aren’t a team that’s going to strike out 200 hitters,” she said. “I like that I can put Maddie in to give the other team a different speed that they aren’t used to. It’s worked well for us, and if it’s not broken …”

Staples struck out seven in four innings, allowing four hits while walking none. Corwell struck out five in three perfect innings of relief.

EKALB – The Newman softball team’s drive for five is now complete.

What’s next? The joy of six? Seventh heaven?

It’s time to set some new goals, now that an unlikely bucket list has been filled up. With a 7-9 record a month or so ago, who would have thought anything like this was possible?

Even ever-positive head coach JD Waldschmidt had to shake his head in amazement after his club won its 13th consecutive game on Monday, 5-2 against Princeville in the Class 1A DeKalb Supersectional.

“We’re going to meet [today] at 3:15, and we’re going to look at what the girls want to accomplish this weekend,” Waldschmidt said. “We will let the team decide what those goals are. We will ask them what their goals are, and I have a feeling it will be to win a couple of games down in East Peoria.”

At the beginning of the season, the Comets had five goals. They were to defeat Amboy, win conference, win a regional, win a sectional, and advance to state.

Been there, done that.

“This is a great opportunity and a dream for our team,” senior catcher Julie Hurd said. “We’ve been waiting and wanting this for so long, and we’re so excited to go this year.”

The win against Amboy had nothing to do with the rivalry between the two schools, but rather exorcizing some demons

Princeville had outscored four postseason opponents 40-1 before Monday’s game, but managed just two runs and seven hits against Newman pitchers Sam Miller and Lakyn Waldschmidt. Mistakes by the Princes on the base paths and in the field provided the Comets with a bigger opening, and they were able to break through in the 11th.

Who knows what state holds? Newman likely catches a break in that it is in the opposite bracket of Hardin-Calhoun, which won its supersectional matchup 16-0 against Griggsville-Perry.

The Comets will get a chance to see how they stand up against the state’s elite. It’s been quite a ride, and it’s not over yet.

“This is just great,” senior third baseman Jenna Stevens said. “We’ve never been here before, it’s a first for us, and it’s just really exciting. We’re all so happy right now.”

Hadden put the finishing touches on the win for Newman (20-9) with a running catch in leftcenter field. The ball caught the top of the webbing in her glove, but stuck in there to set off a wild celebration by the Comets.

“I was little bit nervous the whole game,” Hadden said, “but it’s my job to defend anything out there, and that was my ball. I had to make sure I did everything in my power to get that ball. There was no way it was coming out.”

With the teams knotted at 2-2 through 10 innings, the Comets were able to break through in the 11th.

Grace Ely led off by reaching on an error, when Princeville first baseman Madison Roe dropped a throw from second baseman Natalie Cokel. Julie Hurd then drew a walk, a play that chased Princeville starter Jordan Kraft.

Reliever Paige Lane uncorked a wild pitch on her first offering, moving Ely and Hurd up a base.

The next batter, Mady Ferris, hit a grounder to Princeville shortstop Brooke Gardner, who elected to go home on the play to try and get Ely. The throw was late and wild, allowing Ely and Hurd to score and putting

Lakyn Waldschmidt later brought in Ferris with an infield single, and the Comets had a threerun cushion.

Princeville (29-8) loaded the bases with two outs in the 11th, due mainly to a pair of Newman errors.

Representing the potential winning run, Cokel hit the fly ball to left-center that was flagged down by Hadden for the final out.

Newman had six hits, and none of them were bigger than a two-out double by Stevens in the top of the sixth. The shot to center field brought Hurd around from first base and knotted the score at 2-2.

“I’ve been hitting the ball pretty well prior to this,” Stevens said, “and that pitch was just right down the middle. I had to take it.

It was a nice pitch to hit.”

Newman flip-flopped its pitching routine. Sam Miller normally comes on in relief, but got the start and was effective. She allowed two runs and five hits in five innings. Lakyn Waldschmidt came on with a runner on first and nobody out in the sixth, got out of that jam, and held the Princes at bay the rest of the way.

“I always have Sam’s back when she starts,” Waldschmidt said, “and I know she does the same for me when I start.”

Princeville hurt itself with numerous baserunning gaffes, the most costly of which came in the fourth inning. Chelsea Gardner led off with a walk, Lane had a bunt single, and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch by Miller.

DeVries, hit a sacrifice fly to right that scored Gardner, but Lane was called out by tagging up too early from second base.

Princeville was left with a 2-1 lead, but in the end, needed more.

“The bottom line was about execution,” Princeville coach Chad Gardner said. “In my speech at the beginning of the year, you win ballgames and you lose ballgames on baserunning. We lost a ballgame today on baserunning.

I’m proud of my kids and I’m proud of my coaching staff for all they’ve done, but baserunning was the name of the game today.”

Newman scored the first run of the game when Ferris smacked a one-out triple in the top of the first. She scored on a sacrifice fly by Stevens.

Royal Lions get hit, keep coming Cardinals fall in sectional title game

BYRON – Rockford Christian’s David Prisby took his fifth-inning atbat a little further off the plate than normal. He was thinking about his previous at-bat, which ended with him taking a ball off the face.

Prisby was hit on his left cheek with a pitch from Forreston-Polo starter Nathan Schneiderman in the fourth inning, but stayed in the game and delivered a key hit.

“I’ve never been hit like that before,” the Royal Lions centerfielder said.

“I was a little scared up there, kept thinking about an inside pitch again, but I knew I had to overcome that for my teammates.”

Prisby’s two-run single with the bases loaded in the fifth sparked the Royal Lions to a 6-3 win over the Cardinals in the 2A Byron Sectional championship game. Rockford Christian advances to the Rock Island Supersectional where it will face Illini West at 7 p.m. today at Augustana College.

Schneiderman and the Cardinals (32-6) found themselves in another pitcher’s duel, as the lefthander was working on a no-hitter through the first four innings. But everything unraveled in the fifth. The no-hit bid was lost when No. 6 hitter Stachel Daleo led off with a single. The next batter tried to bunt Daleo over to second, and Schneiderman overthrew Cardinals’ first baseman Caleb Poffenberger. The error allowed Daleo to race around the bases to score the game’s first run.

A perfect bunt by Jacob Gugle hugged the thirdbase line, and a walk by Niolaus Frahm loaded the bases for Prisby, whose single made it 3-0. The Royal Lions (33-6) scored five times in the inning, despite collecting just three hits.

“It was a compound of errors that did us in,” said Schneiderman, who allowed five runs, three earned, and had four strikeouts. “I can’t explain it, we just had one bad inning and it’s all over.”

Those runs were all Rockford Christian starter Alex Powell needed, as he limited the Cardinals’ chances at the plate. The crafty right-hander struck out 12 batters – a mix of six swinging and six look-

Forreston-Polo had two hits in the first two innings against Powell before he settled in. He started to get his breaking pitches over the plate, and had at least one strikeout in each inning.

“I knew I had to keep at it,” Powell said. “I knew eventually my stuff would start working. It didn’t feel right early on, but it came to me. I needed that because [Schneiderman] was really dealing. We’re used to scoring 10 runs all the time, and he didn’t let us do that today.”

The Cardinals didn’t go quietly as they batted around and staged a comeback in the top of the seventh. The first three batters reached base to chase Powell. Nolan Gazouski came on with the bases loaded and walked in two runs, and an error at shortstop gave the Cardinals their third run, before Gazouski found the plate and shut the door by striking out Jacob Cunningham to end the game. “[Powell] was throwing well, but we just didn’t swing the bats enough,” said Cardinals centerfielder Brody Grobe, who went 1-for-2 with a single and two walks. “In that seventh, we started to feel a little life. That’s us, though. We never quit and always feel confident that we can get it done.”

Forreston-Polo set a co-op record in wins this season, as well as win percentage, and were two wins away from sending the Forreston class of athletes to its third state tournament after reaching in football and basketball this season.

“Just looking in the kids’ eyes during that seventh, you could tell they weren’t going to give up,” Cardinals coach Kyle Zick said.

“But all it takes is a couple mistakes in baseball and you’re done.”

FREEPORT – The Fulton Steamers had their sectional championship delayed until Monday because of the rain on Saturday.

Head coach Kyle Miller had a few important decisions to make over the weekend when it came to pitching and his batting order.

He had several players returning to the team after they competed in the IHSA state track & field finals Saturday in Charleston.

On the mound, he could stick with Jack Lemke, or go in the direction of co-ace Devon Ballard, who pitched Wednesday in the sectional semifinal game.

“Jack is a kid that is very talented,” Miller said. “ D-Bo [Ballard] gets all the recognition, and for good reason. But I believe we have two No.1 pitchers.”

He chose to go with Lemke, who did not let his coach down. The junior right-hander struck out 14 batters in a dominant complete game, as the Steamers won their first sectional title in program history with a 7-3 victory over River Ridge-Scales Mound.

On the other side, River RidgeScales Mound head coach Jeremy Knauer decided to make a change on the mound. He resumed the game with his ace, Matt Basten, who was fresh after pitching against Dakota in their sectional semifinal win on Wednesday.

Fulton right fielder Erik North was the first batter of the game when play was resumed. He welcomed Basten rudely with a base hit through the right side, scoring VanZuiden from third base and Cole McClary from second. After a second inning that spanned 3 days time, the Steamers led 7-0.

Lemke started strong on the mound, striking out the side in the

top of the third. River Ridge-Scales Mound finally got on the board in the top of the fourth on a two-run double by Nate Brown. He then stole third and scored on a wild pitch, cutting into the deficit to 7-3.

Both offenses were quiet for the remainder of the game. The Wildcats defense made routine plays to strand Fulton baserunners. Lemke and his fastball were all Fulton needed. The junior co-ace struck out seven in the final three innings, including all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh to end the game.

The Steamers will play today at 4:30 p.m. at Benedictine University in Lisle, againt Illinois Lutheran for the chance to go to state.

“We think we’ll be ready,” Lemke stated. “We just need to hit the ball and throw strikes.”

Rock Falls (23-10-1) committed four errors in the first two innings, and led to three Rochelle runs, only one of which was earned. Erickson relieved tough-luck starter Nolan Moeller with one out in the top of the second, and walked the first hitter he faced to load the bases.

But he induced a grounder to second that James McFadden turned into a tag-’em-out, throw-’em-out double play to keep the Rocket deficit at 3-1.

After the Hubs (1413) gave Rock Falls two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning to tie the score, Erickson again looked to be in trouble in the top of the third.

But after walking the first two hitters, he took the easy out on a sacrifice bunt, then struck out the next two hitters looking – the first with three devastating curveballs, the second with perfectly-placed fastballs – to strand the runners on second and third.

“The one thing I wanted to do was keep my composure,” said Erickson, who struck out five and walked three in 4 2/3 innings of two-hit, shutout relief. “If we booted a ball, or I missed my spot, I just wanted to recover and hit the spot the next time, and trust the defense behind me.”

He also helped his own cause. After the back-toback strikeouts to end the top of the third, he ripped a one-out RBI single to drive in Mammosser – who had reached on an error – to finally put the Rockets in front, 4-3.

It turned into a pretty good offensive day.”

It was all downhill from there for the Hubs. Five straight hits with one out in the bottom of the fourth – three of them doubles – gave Rock Falls an 8-3 advantage, and chased Rochelle starter Mark Wanner. The Rockets then touched three Rochelle relievers for five earned runs and seven hits – also taking advantage of three walks and a hit batsman – in the next two frames.

“It hurt us that we had two chances to score and didn’t early in the game,” Rochelle coach Jared Reynolds said, “and it hurt us even more giving up those three unearned runs early on. They’re a great hitting team, and

they put their bats on the ball and took advantage of us not helping ourselves defensively.”

Clay Velazquez and Mammosser had RBI hits in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-3, then McFadden, Reid Akerman and Velazquez hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth.

Velazquez’s went into the left-center field gap and drove in McFadden with the game-ending run to make it 13-3.

“I think the nerves finally all went away once we got the lead, and everybody just kept hitting the ball hard,” Velazquez said. “I had a couple of bonehead mistakes in the field early in the game, and really wanted to make up for it with my bat.

“And I think once our offense got going, it took all the pressure off of us.”

Velazquez finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs and two runs, and Mammosser was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBIs

and two runs. Erickson had two hits and drove in two runs, and his RBI double immediately following Logan Pillars’ two-run single in the fourth was the last straw for Wanner.

Rock Falls scored in every inning, and all but one spot in the batting order had a hit. Eight different Rockets scored runs.

“We did a nice job of putting the ball in play, and we made them make plays,” Rock Falls coach Donnie Chappell said.

“I felt bad for Nolan, because he pitched well and we just didn’t make plays behind him. It wasn’t pretty early, that’s for sure, but we finally got going there later on.”

Rock Falls advances to the 3A Sycamore Sectional semifinals, where it will play Wheaton St. Francis at 4 p.m. Thursday in Sycamore Park. St. Francis beat Aurora Central Catholic 11-1 in the St. Francis Regional final on Monday afternoon.

New mayor in town Bulls set to name former player Hoiberg as coach

CHICAGO – The Mayor is moving to Chicago.

The Bulls plan to introduce Iowa State’s Fred Hoiberg as their new coach today, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.

Hoiberg had long been rumored as the replacement for Tom Thibodeau, who was fired last week after five seasons in Chicago. The person spoke to the AP on Monday night on condition of anonymity because the contract had not been finalized.

The Bulls said in a release they would make a major announcement today.

Hoiberg went 115-56 with the Cyclones, including four straight NCAA Tournament appearances and back-to-back Big 12 tournament titles. He had open-heart surgery in April.

Before flying to Chicago to speak with the Bulls, Hoiberg acknowledged that several NBA teams had approached him about their vacancies in recent years.

“When this opportunity came about, this was something that interested me greatly,” Hoiberg said. “One of my life goals is to coach in that league.”

Hoiberg said the speculation over his future had been “extremely tough.” Hoiberg grew up in Ames and earned the nickname “The Mayor” while starring for the Cyclones in the 1990s.

With his start pushed back because of a cracked fingernail and a rainout, Hammel (4-2) pitched for the first time in 8 days, and he seemed to benefit from the extra rest. He allowed one run, five hits and no walks.

“His stuff kept getting better as the game progressed,” Maddon said. “He was outstanding.”

Hammel threw 117 pitches, his highest total since 2009. All of his strikeouts were swinging.

Fiers (2-5) allowed four hits in six innings, one shy of his season high, and won for the first time in six starts since May 2 at Chicago.

Johnathan Broxton, Neal Cotts, James Jeffress and Francisco Rodriguez combined to allow four hits without walking a batter in Milwaukee’s fourth shutout of the season. Rodriguez finished for his ninth save.

The win comes a day after the Brewers beat Arizona in 17 innings.

Jaime Garcia (1-2) worked seven sterling innings, and Kolten Wong and Mark Reynolds had two singles apiece for the Cardinals, shut out for the fifth time – but first time at home, where they’re among the best in the league at 20-7.
